I've suspected the same myself, but then again i played raid shadow legends for almost a year and their suspicious lootbox drops every time I stopped spending for a month or two and only did cb and barely rushed through dailies most days even made me paranoid. Now I look at any binge of good fortune/luck suspiciously especially at periods my interest declines and the login frequency, durations and activity while on games can show it to devs and their algorithms. The matrix has you.

Thank God this game doesn't have loot boxes. I don't play multiplayer games, but I made an exception with DBD. But if this game ever starts creeping into that territory, I'll drop it like a bad habit.

  • I thought cross-play would help to even out the ranks since the game can pull from a much bigger pool of players, but sadly that doesn't look to be the case. Like you I look forward to the MMR returning, but it definitely needed improving.

The biggest advantage with MMR was the fact that I could test out a killer that I had never played with before and not be punished. But with the game going back to matching people by ranks, means that I'll be facing high-ranking survivors in a bunch of sweaty matches with someone I've never played with before. Which goes to show just how much dead by daylight needs a practice mode like its mobile counterpart has. I thought I would never see the day when I wished that a console game was more like a mobile game! ๐Ÿ˜„

The gambling mentality that if I play enough, maybe I'll enjoy it eventually.

It's disappointing that there's almost nothing in the game that I'm sure I'll enjoy in a given match.

It definitely is a gamble. Some days I have games where I'll be matched against people far more experienced than me, and other days I'll have matches where everything will go just right. It's almost like the game does this on purpose to ensure that you don't abandon it completely! ๐Ÿ˜„

nothing currently, first times I've felt as pissed off on survivor as I do on killer recently. ten minute survivor queues for me have alot to do with it, otherwise I would have requeued as usual. more of you need to take one for the team and play killers... chop-chop to it

Yeah cross-play initially reduced the queue times, but lately in the evening it's been the same that it's always been (10min). Don't know what to make of that.๐Ÿคจ

I have no clue. ๐Ÿ˜ I keep asking me the same thing - or better said: I more and more ask myself, why anyone who doesn't like stress that much would keep doing this to himself...

The easy answer in my case would be: the fact, that there's no other game around at this moment which I really feel like playing (and haven't played over and over already) and probably a bit of addiction... But if my experiences continue in the way of my last matches, then the chances are good, that the addiction soon will be over, because it wasn't that much of fun. I feel it's getting harder the higher your rank gets and then there's also the matchmaking which isn't always ideal and the behaviour of other players...๐Ÿ™„ And I guess, somewhen I will probably just have enough.

Edit: I forgot one point, the challenge of becoming better...

Those are all excellent points. There's more frustrations than there are positives with this game unfortunately. But it goes to show just how strong this game is! If the devs could just work on ironing out all of the bugs, fixing the matchmaking, and appeasing gamers that have requested the same thing year after year, then this game could be a true gem!

  • @Pawcelot said:

Not sure. I keep coming back inbetween breaks and burning myself out once more.. only to come back again. I hate the community and I honestly question a lot of things the developers do and prioritize. Game itself is addictive, so maybe that's it?

It is addictive! Like I said before there's nothing like it, and it can be fun to play, but it can also be quite infuriating!

A few things actually. I love the nature of team based pvp games, but I always seem to be cursed with bad teammates when playing them. So with Dbd being asymmetrical I can play against teams while not having to rely on teammates of my own hence why I'm a killer main. I like the feeling of outplaying multiple opponents on my own.

I've also met quite a few cool people throughout my time playing. Just as easy as it is for people to initiate toxic conversations with you over dumb ######### it's also just as easy to start a chill convo about the game where you realize you just found a cool person to friend. Ah the duality of Dbd.

Also the multiple horror icons in the game. How could any fan of the horror genre overlook Dbd even if it isn't the best in terms of balance? Myers, Leatherface, Ghostface, Saw, Freddy, Demogorgon, Pyramid Head, and a whole bunch of other original killers. Say what you will about the game but it's one of a kind.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

Rift's brought me back out of retirement, and I enjoy the stories. I'm really more of a bloodpoint harvester than a competitor, but I've played for long enough that I'm in a position where if I need to I can usually come out on top. This makes the game kind of relaxing as both survivor and killer.

I've learned to adopt a carefree attitude regardless if I'm playing killer or survivor. I had to learn to roll with the punches. I no longer care about ranking or pipping and it's made a world of difference. Besides, what other game lets you play as horror icons Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers? ๐Ÿ˜„

I play to best other people, it is nice knowing I can be 1 mind and can best 4 others that have so much of an advantage over me but through practice, skill, and strategy I can beat them. Best feeling ever, I love the challenge, I see DBD is an online dungeon solo raid with every trial being a new one. It is super hard and you are at an disadvantage but when you outsmart your opponents it never could feel better

Matchmaking can ensure that you're always at a disadvantage, but what you said holds weight!

  • @kaeru said:

I think I play because of rift and archives. When rift is done I do a big break from the game. Also I really like to chase survivors and grind bloodpoints to p3 every character. And I love to hunt achievements. Maybe it is lame but if I emjoy it, it doesn't really matter.

No it doesn't matter. To each their own. You do you!

The 4v1 aspect, I come from other pvp games, it is fun not having the upper hand and then making a good comeback.

I like the grinding system I used to speedrun grinding games (monster hunter) so I enjoy grinding bp and then spending them on perks items addons etc.

Sometimes you get to meet nice people (pretty rare but happens).

Nice people in DBD matches are like diamonds in the rough, it's rare, but they're there!๐Ÿ™‚

Im sure theres 94858364 other reasons other people could add to the list but you catch my drift.

Sadly, yes I do. And all those reasons, along with the plethora of others that people could think of, aren't wrong.

  • This happened to a friend of mine on PS4 today. He experienced a server disconnection issue, but it registered as an intentional disconnection from the match so he was banned for 5 minutes.

With all the glitches this game is known to have, I certainly don't want to be punished for DBD's shortcomings.

"since all anyone has to do is stop playing for a few months and be reset to a rank"

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I also consider 1 month rank resets a bad practice. It's a really short time.

Devs don't need to think so much on planning this, just copy the system League of Legends has. And they are actually doing it.

In league of legends they have ranks and hidden MMRs. That's all.

So they are doing here the same, and that's the right way to act.

    Even tho, ranks still matter.

Last night I was playing with some friends, and we went up against quite a few newer players. We did have a level 13 in our lobby of survivors, but the rest of us were between the ranks of 5 - 8, so getting a rank 17 killer more than once was ridiculous, especially considering that cross-play is live.

I know it's easy to look at what other games are doing and simply say "copy that", but DBD is unlike any other multiplayer game out there. I don't know what would work best, but matching games based on ranks isn't the way to do it.

  • @dugman said:

The matches I got under the new MMR were fine personally. But I get why itโ€™s temporarily turned off, it was putting top streamers against full teams of brand new survivors. My guess is something was wrong with how they did their initial seeding and/or something was off with specific killers that impacted their ratings. (Tofu said on a stream for instance that his Billy matches were lopsided but other killers were more reasonable.) Hopefully theyโ€™ll have the new MMR glitch repaired soon, the rank system is silly.

I hope it's fixed soon too. Every time when I think about firing up a killer match, I'm reminded of how uneven the matches have been for me personally when playing killer, and it makes me turn to survivor instead.

  • As others have pointed out, with the MMR turned off they went back to their old matchmaking setup which puts together matches based on ranks. It used to be a mess when it was restricted to one console, but with cross-play now active, the fact that it's still a mess goes to show just how poor of a matchmaking set up dead by daylight has. I'm a rank 14 killer myself, and I'm getting matched with people that are roughly 10 levels higher than me. It's ridiculous!

I have said this some time ago, but I don't mind repeating it.

To me, ranks definitely showcase your skill level. BUT, there are 2 major problems with the system:

    • 20 ranks are not enough. We would need like 10 or 20 more.
    • The matchmaking system is completely broken. With or without MMR. We can't expect ranks to faithfully showcase the ability level of a player, if brown/yellow killers are paired with red rank survivors. From my own experience climbing as killer, since I was rank 20, I usually got paired with red rank survivors. I was playing like...80% of my time against red ranks no matter my rank. Hence, making my climbing much harder comparing it to a survivor. If killers are getting high level survivors, obviously, this means that high rank survivors are getting low rank killers, hence, climbing up as survivor is easier (not easy, but easier).

And of course, this hasn't been my experience alone, it's widespread between killers.

Why this trend happens? I don't really know, maybe it's due to the lack of low-medium rank survivors so killers usually get high rank survivors? I don't know.

But from my own view, If we had more ranks, and you got paired with people at least in your same color, ranks would matter a lot more.

So long as rank reset exists, no one will ever be a "true" anything since all anyone has to do is stop playing for a few months and be reset to a rank that doesn't accurately represent your skill.

I just hope the devs don't give up on the MMR because using a matchmaking system based on ranks is the wrong way to go about this. I thought having access to PS4, switch, Xbox, and PC would help to smooth things out a little bit rank-wise, but apparently I was wrong.

  • @Paina said:

for me games were like this with MMR, most of the time even worse. Had to play with team mates and killer who just started to play dbd (0-10 hours). Games are better now (for me at least), but definitely not fair all the time :(

The MMR definitely needed tweaking, and I know it wasn't suitable for everyone. But for me it worked out rather well since I play the game casually, and it made tackling a new killer much better then it did when there was no MMR.

  • @Kilmeran said:

In all honesty, the matchmaker was like that for 10 months before MMR was tried, and therefore long before crossplay. They went back to the rank-as-matchmaker system, so here we are again.

Look, it's fairly obvious at this point that BHVR doesn't know how to make a "fair" matchmaker for an asymmetrical game. I don't even have hopes for the next version of MMR was they kick it live at some point.

Many of us in the community knew that matchmaking was a mess, and while it does suck that the MMR is currently turned off, I thought surely having access to every console plus PC would be able to streamline the ranks more. Apparently I was wrong.

I miss MMR, the only time it seemed i had issues with a lesser opponent was if the 1st killer matched up dodged. Playing as killer also seemed right after so many matches I actually played some killers i had never played before.

Being able to test out a killer you've never played with before was the MMR's biggest advantage. Now that that's gone I'm too reluctant to try a killer I've never tried before.

  • @Aneurysm said:

The MMR seemed to be just starting to work properly for me when they pulled the plug, feels bad.

Still, why would you spend money to buy a new killer and a new survivor if you can spend in game free currency?

You don't save money by buying the DLC.

You save more money spending iridescent shards because they are free to get.

Most characters cost 500 cells, which means both the Killer and the survivor come to 1,000 cells which equals $10. But if you purchase the DLC from the respective store it usually goes for $7. Besides the last thing I want to do is spend shards because spending upwards to 9,000 or more shards for one character isn't exactly something I'm thrilled about, especially how long it takes to stockpile up those shards.

  • @sad_killer_main said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1552393#Comment_1552393

This is a non-licensed killer. To buy him, you have to spend iridescent shards, which is a free to play currency.

Of course that you can buy him with real money, but who would buy a non-licensed killer with real life money.

I just hope that this killer doesn't make it to the live servers until his power has been completely reworked.

The reason you would use real life money is because you save money by buying the whole chapter instead of the characters separately. But I wouldn't be surprised if the character gets a rework considering the bad word of mouth he's getting from BHVR's own Fog Whispers.

  • @sad_killer_main said:

I'll just buy him to unlock his perks and that's it.

If I want to run I already have legion, which is more consistent in that respect.

That's the last thing you should do. No gamer should spend money for just perks. We deserve better than that, because we don't want to encourage this kind of thing in the future.

  • The hitboxes in the map prevent him from being playable. There were plenty of videos that I saw yesterday of streamers being unable to loop survivors, let alone go through a doorway because the hitboxes were just too much of a hindrance for his rush attack.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/183326/sigh-the-sweat-matches-have-returned

Your post is self-contradictory. In the first paragraph you acknowledge the devs said ranks don't matter, then in the second paragraph you go on to complain about how you're getting matched with players at a higher rank than you.

With the MMR, a lot of experienced players were finding they were regularly matched against new players, which clearly wasn't fair. I have more hours in DBD than I want to admit and I was going up against new survivors with a few hours to their name. With it turned off I'm finding a much more even match of players.

It would be ideal if a good middle ground could be found, but in a game like DBD I don't know if that's possible. Hopefully BHVR can get to a system that suits everyone!

I was referring to what I was experiencing both with the MMR and without. Without the MMR I was being matched with people far more experienced than me, but with the MMR it was a lot more bearable, but admittedly not perfect.

Matching games based off ranks isn't the way to do it, but the MMR, while better, wasn't ideal for everyone either. I think the devs were on the right track with the MMR, I just hope that they can fix what was broken.

  • @Deadeye said:

Returned? Have they ever been gone?

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/183326/sigh-the-sweat-matches-have-returned

They didn't say they mean nothing. They said it does not reflect skill, it reflects gametime. And the MMR matched people with 80 hours to people with 3k hours. So emblem match making is currently the better approach. Because more playtime at least means that you have seen enough things to know the basics about the game. Like it doesn't make sense to crouch behind a wall when Legion just hit someone with Frenzy.

And noone can exactly say how it is working. Just a guess: I noticed higher queue times in survivor red ranks and almost instant in killer red ranks (both PC). From forum feedback it looks like console survivors are mostly fine with crossplay while killers complain about performance differences being a handicap. I also can confirm that in my games I see almost always console survivors, but I went against maybe 3 console killers since crossplay is active.

So my guess is that console killers is the biggest group that is disabling crossplay in the options, leading to a bad ratio of available killers/survivors you can go against. Meaning that the match making will most likely loosen the requirements to get people into games that have been waiting for a longer time, so it is possible that the rank messup is happening because of crossplay distribution of roles. As I said, just a guess, no idea how match making is processing things.

I can't follow how your experience was better with MMR. My experience was that I constantly (red ranks) was matched with rank 15 or lower survivors or getting rank 19 killers instead. Same as killer, getting sometimes full squads of grey ranks. So I would have expected you to face several red ranks as well. The only 'positive' thing I noticed was people having fun to smash teams or loop killers into oblivion, which was/is rarely a thing in emblem match making

Less than a week before the MMR went live, I had three back-to-back matches where my rank 14 killer at the time faced 3 lobbies of nothing but red ranks. But once the MMR was turned on I started being matched against more people of my skill level, although like I said before I was still getting matched against people that I shouldn't have - both for the better and for the worse.

I'll admit that the MMR still needs tweaking, but for casual players like myself it was a very nice thing to have, especially when trying to play as a killer that I had never played with before. Hopefully they can iron out what was wrong so that way gamers can have fun regardless of their skill level.

They could do so much more with tutorialization, even from a lore standpoint. With the massive amounts of money they rake in from their millions of active players, they could even afford some voice acting if they wanted. Imagine if Billy got his own little race course style tutorial where first you learn how to sprint and curve around some light obstacles, then you have to aim for target dummies/scarecrows or something, or even tied up survivors if they want to get real nasty with it. Then combining that into a little time trial thing where you're curving around relatively tight corners and trying to hit targets as fast as possible, learning when to use your chainsaw on a pallet vs. using a normal kick, etc.

Survivors could get a more generic but still just as useful guide on, first of all, what looping is (since it's literally never shown in the tutorial and is only vaguely mentioned in loading screens) and how to do it and how to tighten it up. Maybe a new tutorial could even teach you what a pallet is and what it does! They could have their own little emblem system where the longer you can loop a practice killer the better your score, with all of this giving you a hefty amount of BP if you complete it properly. First time reward only, of course.

Maybe they could even go into explaining why you might want to do more than crouch around the map and hide in bushes in case the scary killer shows up, which is pretty much the current survivor tutorial.

I know I'd really enjoy a nurse tutorial where they try to explain why you should stay far away from basements, which are your eternal enemy.

I like the idea of each killer having its own tutorial that's filled with objectives that teach you how to play, as well as a more generalized tutorial for survivors.

Truthfully though, it's both sad and infuriating that as players we have to turn to streamers to teach us how to play this game, since like you said the game doesn't even teach you what a pallet is, and why it's so important to a survivor.

  • If there's one thing that everyone unanimously agrees on, is that the tutorial mode in dead by daylight is weak at best as it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of everything that can be done in the game. Each killer should come with their own tutorial video, that, or there should be a practice mode like there is in the mobile version of dead by daylight.

What I find interesting too is that the practice mode in the mobile version has clearly been very successful because before its implementation the queue times to play as killer were always incredibly high, but now that the practice mode has been implemented the queue times are always looking good for both killer and survivor.

There's been a lot of talk that bots will make their way to the main game as a way to step in for people that disconnect (and that they will be able to use those bots to form a practice mode) but when that will happen is anyone's guess.

  • @Splinterverse said:

OP -- I'm not sure exactly what they are using for matchmaking, but if they turned off MMR and replaced it with rank-based matchmaking, what you are most likely experiencing is time-based matchmaking. What I mean by that is, the longer you wait in queue, the more likely you are to be matched with folks who are outside your rank. BHVR believes it is better to provide a match sooner than to continue to wait until the appropriate opponents are found. It's time vs. quality.

If you want to avoid that, your best bet would be to play during the peak hours of your region. That way you will have a greater number of players to be matched with. Playing during off-peak hours will reduce that number and will be more likely to result in mismatches due to time in queue.

With the MMR turned off the game has gone back to looking at ranks to set up matches, which does suck considering that even the developers themselves stated that ranks don't necessarily represent skill.

But you're absolutely right about the game pitting you against anyone it can find if the queue times are taking too long. In my region survivor queues are instant during mid-day, whereas killer queues are instant in the evening. However it was like this before cross-play, so it's a little odd to still see long queue times after cross-play.

  • @BananaBlooD95 said:

Since the new match making I've been able to get rank 2 killer with Clown. While I still get the occasional game where I get destroy, right after that I get a bunch of potato that can't do ######### (especially console player).

I'm a console player myself, and I certainly don't try to be a jerk or to take the game hostage. But there is something to be said about pitting console players against PC players. PC is much better optimized with better fps, which handicaps console ports greatly. I like having cross-play, but I agree with others in that I think there should be an option that allows people to cross play with other consoles and not PC.

  • @Deathslinger said:

The MMR was good for me too. I called a week prior to the MMR drop that it would last a week and then be turned off and I was right, but I was sad to be right since it had worked well for me. Iโ€™m a lvl 1 Killer that tries to put up a decent fight so, I usually hover around 4-5 killers consistently and this MMR system let me play and try and learn other killers without getting demolished and bullied.

Hope it comes back soon. Iโ€™ve gone back to taking breaks till new content drops or my rank naturally drops to a level where I donโ€™t get SWF try hards every game~

Another aspect of the MMR that I really liked was that it took it easy on you when trying out a new killer you had never played with before. But now with the MMR turned off, it's matching you against people of your rank despite having no experience with certain killers. I think it just goes to show why this game needs its own practice mode like its mobile counterpart already has.

  • @SCP_FOR_DBD said:

The main mode is competitive. Thats why its ranked.

^This. However I'm not against there being other game modes implemented into the game. Getting new killers and new survivors is okay and all, but doing the same objectives over and over gets real stale after awhile.

  • @Masochistic_Killer said:

When did they ever stop? I've been facing red rank 1 SWFs all night as rank 6. It's always been this way, even from rank 20 when I started a month and a half ago, because a lot of SWF will take like 16 with them to throw off the MM and they get matched with someone well below where they should.

The only differences I've noticed have been, some console SWFs just like to ######### with the killer and don't even try to do gens it's all flash lights and head on/pallet/DS stuns, and they try 360 a lot more. Of course, the only ######### talk comes from PC, cause it's the only place it can come from, GG EZ BABY KILLER!!

You're not wrong, I was simply referring to how much better my experience was with the MMR than without.

It's sad because the Killer is the one thing you don't have to fear in dead by daylight. The state of the matchmaking and SWF makes playing as killer the more terrifying experience.

  • The same perks get ran all the time because it's what people feel they have to rely on in order to win. I myself don't like going with the traditional meta perks. I like to change things up, but even I'll admit that if I don't have a good team, then my testing of different builds could ultimately be my undoing. It's one of the reasons why swf is so popular, because you can have one person dedicated to healing, doing generators, finding totems, etc.

  • Good question! I despised Bubba at first but really grew to love him once I had the right build. And after his buff he's even more fun to play with! However it's definitely a bummer no longer having the MMR up and running because it was lenient with Killers you had never played with before, and there's nothing worse than getting a sweaty team for a killer you're just learning the ropes with.

  • @xenotimebong said:

Killer on console is far more frustrating than killer on PC. Thereโ€™s a reason survivor queues on console have always been absolutely awful.

I can attest to this. Killer ranks and survivor ranks were never on par with one another on consoles. Even with cross-match live, last night on PS4 my party kept going up against killers that were easily 10 ranks lower than us (17 vs 5). Hell, before the MMR went live my rank 13 killer was facing all red rank survivors, so there was never any consistency. And it looks like it still isn't when it comes to consoles.

  • I thought as much. Thanks all. Appreciate the feedback.

  • I usually avoid the challenges that require me to kill survivors by the Killer's hand, aka, Mori. I don't consider Moris fun, and I know for a fact neither do survivors. Instantly killing someone after just one hook with no counter to it is boring gameplay. I'm just glad that BHVR is reworking Moris, but I'm surprised it took this long to do it.

  • Inner strength is obviously better than self care, but considering the amount of time it takes to get inner strength up and running, (finding a totem, cleansing it, finding a locker, etc ) a lot of people figure they might as well just run self care.

  • Considering BHVR deactivated the new MMR, it would be highly suspect if cross-play went live today. I think the devs were betting on the new MMR keeping everything fair and balanced across multiple systems.

  • For Killers yes, for survivors it's the double crouch or the offering up of your item. Since bloodpoints are the life and blood of DBD, I'm always up for a good farm!

  • The original MMR matched you with people of similar ranks to your own, but even then the devs admitted that the ranks meant nothing. So other than improving queue times, nothing has really changed. My rank 13 killer was matched against red rank swf under the original MMR far too often, and that's something I'm not exactly excited to go back to. ๐Ÿ˜•

  • For me it was really disappointing for Ash to be unable to utilize his boomstick or his chainsaw in any way. I think it would have been a smart idea if he was able to use his boomstick as a guaranteed stun against killers, but like a flashlight it only has a limited amount of use.
