that it's overrated, like i said lol

When my friend and I first picked up the game in 2018 he used to run No Mither (lol) and Dead Hard just because he heard that it can extend the chase by a long time.

Needless to say it did jackshit for him.

I think Dead Hard is an overrated and inconsistent, but good perk.

As killer, I'd pick 4 Dead Hards over 4 Sprint Bursts any day of the week (except Wednesday, we get a little crazy on those days).

I find it really bizarre that you're claiming it is inconsistent, despite so many survivors consistently picking it each game - If the perk, when used properly, was as inconsistent as you claim, it would not be as popular or useful as it is.

It doesn't suck. It's inconsistent but it's still good.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2457909#Comment_2457909

I did, and I disagree. A mid-chase Sprint Burst is way better than Dead Hard. You have the option of getting to a safe area and escaping or continuing to use the killer's time in chase. You have options with Sprint Burst when used properly. Dead Hard is too inconsistent, however ever-present it is, to be considered the best.

Why do you think it is being used so much (it's blowing all other exhaustion perk out of the water in terms of pick rate) if people are not getting massive utility/advantage from it on a consistent basis?

    What's the rational?

  • @Sonzaishinai said:

How can i tell the difference between a survivor wanting to get out of the game and a survivor meming trying to get a kobi before i unhook?

    You can't.

If they're nice enough to alert the killer that an unhook is probably about to occur via their escape attempts, I'm usually nice enough to let them continue to try :)

  • @thefallenloser said:

    Okay, hear me out...

Dead Hard's effectiveness is completely overblown, IMO. I think it's only the third best exhaustion perk. Sprint Burst is just better in almost every way and Lithe gives more distance and is much more consistent.

I admit that when used smartly, Dead Hard is pretty effective at extending loops, however, Dead Hard has a ton of weaknesses that people are quick to write off.

    • It is severely dependent on latency. The timing sweet spot to effectively dodge a hit can greatly vary from killer to killer and sometimes not even work. Very cool exhausted on the ground.
    • It gives way less distance than the other exhaustion perks, hence using less of the killer's time to catch up.
    • Its dodging mechanic is ineffective after the killer finds out they have it, or assume they have it and wait.
    • It is effectively useless in dead zones. Dodging or making an additional 5 feet of distance is going to do nothing for the survivor other than take an additionally 2 seconds in the corner of the map with no pallets or windows.

I've seen people make the weird claim that "Dead Hard extends chases for minutes at a time." If the Dead Hard extended a chase for that long-- which is definitely a complete exaggeration that says more about the killer's skill than the strength of the perk-- why would you continue to give chase?

I think a good Sprint Burst or Lithe are much harder to deal with than Dead Hard.

That doesn't seem relevant to the idea of playing to win.

Seems pretty petty/entitled, though - The desire that a portion of the player base leave because they don't subscribe to one's own preferred playstyle or definition of fun, I mean.

Not gonna lie - I laughed.

    1. No problem, that's just the way the game is. Do whatever puts the most pressure on them

    2. Hook away from the gate, and bodyblock. But typically with NOED, that unhook isn't even happening. Even without it, target the rescuer, they don't have any protection.

    3. I was just listing similar examples

    4. It's not a catch-all, but it helps a lot with the problem. It'd be similar to devour in strength at that point, and it only activates if the game is reasonably close, so you'd probably be getting someone on their 2nd hook anyway.

This is probably outlandish, but if a rework was deemed 100% necessary/it had to be changed, I'd do the following based on the Scourge system:

    1) 4 hooks are 'marked.' - As evenly distributed across the map as possible.

    2) 'Marked' hooks are only visible to the killer and appear normal to the survivors (they are marked with a different aura for the killer on survivor pick-up).

    3) NOED gains a token each time one of these hooks are used.

    4) NOED will activate as normal if all 4 special hooks are used - Still a Hex.

    5) If not, NOED will still activate (still a Hex) but will only last for the number of M1 attacks equal to the number of hooks used - It will deactivate after this.

This would make it harder for NOED to fully activate if the killer is camping people out while also providing a medium ground for people still struggling in the endgame but did not perform well (NOED can still gain tokens during the end for any unused Scourge hooks if you hook someone on one, but it will not reach its 'unlimited' mode - NOED will NOT reactivate once it deactivates for the first time if a survivor is hooked on a 'marked' hook).

Probably will never happen, but seems pretty fun and unique.

  • @FrenziedRoach said:

Even assuming you're right and NOED isn't fine, dont' you think "Catch up mechanics" aren't an essential part of game design?

If NOED covers for bad play, can't you say the same for things like Borrowed Time or Dead Hard? Why are second chance perks like those two or even DS okay and NOED isn't?

    Hypocritical Bullshit

People should run what they want.

Full disclosure - None of these perks actually have any meaningful impact on my gameplay, but the hypocrisy is certainly unreal.

  • @Tekno_Badger said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2454217#Comment_2454217

    1. Don't play "fair". Tunneling and camping are part of the game, it's not balanced around 12-hooking and there's plenty of counterplay to both of them.

    2. Wait out BT, and slug out the DS. Neither of those perks singlehandedly win games either, they still have to do reasonably well in chases and on gens. NOED singlehandedly can get you 2 kills even if you do nothing all game.

    3. Plenty of other perks in this game like Flashbang, Mettle, Pop, Devour, etc. are all "earned" perks.

    4. None of this is much of an issue if you get 6 Hook Stages, which really isn't that difficult. That change makes it far healthier and makes the game far more enjoyable, especially at lower ranks

1). Thank you for the tip. I will tunnel and camp more.

2). How do I wait it out at the gate? The 10s travel distance from BT if I try to wait it out often puts them close to the gate, as that's where most of the action is happening endgame. They can just crawl out - It's an unwinnable scenario if they're within a certain distance of the gate regardless of whether I outplayed them or not.

3). I'm more of a Bond/Whispers/Discordance/Kindred/DS/BT person myself - plenty of perks in this game have unique/different activation conditions.

4). I do not think the hook stage idea is good - What stops someone from just camping 2 people out of the game and getting the 3rd with NOED....Seems like a familiar scenario.

  • @Tekno_Badger said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2454204#Comment_2454204

What do you mean. If you use NOED properly you can easily secure 1 or 2 kills. Nobody can save them unless they manage to find the Totem with enough time to perform an unhook and even then it's probably a trade.

Sorry - I mean you're saying that I do not deserve the perk because I played bad.

If someone that is unhooked from stage two, after I played 'fair' all game, gets to be protected by BT and DS after immediately coming out of a losing state (hook) and can easily escape through no meaningful interaction of their own, is that ok in your eyes?

  • @Tekno_Badger said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2454194#Comment_2454194

Rancor works for 1 survivor. NOED works for all 4. And no, you don't deserve to be carried by a perk. No Way Out is a 2nd chance, Rancor is a 2nd chance. You don't deserve a free pass to kill people just because you aren't playing well. NOED is a huge problem, and requiring 6 Hook Stages easily solves its issues. If you can't get those then you should probably not be at that rank

    I don't understand.

People that I hook during the endgame can bounce out the door with Borrowed Time and DS because I didn't camp them out of the game and they failed/got hooked at the end game? They deserve the three health states (injured + BT + DS)? They earned it on death hook by just existing and failing/playing bad?

  • @PureDoctorMain said:

I like counterforce plus inner strength on solo. So NOED is never that much of a problem for me. If the killer did have to earn NOED as you suggest then not much would change only thing that would change is that the killer would tunnel instead of facecamp. Get the 4-5 hooks you suggested then camp you out till NOED is active then go on a rampage. NOED is designed as one of the only comeback perk in a killers arsenal. If im remembering correctly Survivors don't really earn a lot of their perks and almost no HEX perk is earned. I see no problem with NOED as a perk. I see no problem with keys, DH, DS UB, or anything like that. Run what you wanna run. In conclusion, It's not that bad if you know what you're doing. Being altruistic is good when with friends but as solo it just ain't worth it to begin with NOED or not.

On a more serious note, I usually go with Hunch over Counterforce in an Inner Strength Build, moreso because of the additional travel distance required by CF vs the additional area info that Hunch provides.

If you can't get 6 hook stages by end game, then you don't have a leg to stand on. NOED shouldn't be designed to carry bad players, and this is an easy fix that works just fine. It's 6 hook stages, not even just 6 hooks. If you can't get that and you use noed, you're likely part of the problem

I am quite terrible, and am surely part of the bad killer 'problem.'

Do you think that I do not deserve a second chance perk that can be removed to help me get some additional downs/points at the end of the game because I blew my first chance...thus facilitating the need for a second chance?

What about I run Rancor and mori the obsession without hooking them - Is that also carrying me?

  • @Tekno_Badger said:

Noed is not fine, bad killers use it as a crutch and it spoils games even if the survivors thoroughly outplayed them. The best way to fix this is to only activate it if 6 Hook Stages were achieved

Suggestions like this are a fine way to negate its intended purpose as a power boost/second chance perk during the killer's weakest portion of the game.

Like most second chance perks in the game, being 'thoroughly outplayed' isn't something that should have bearing on its activation conditions.

  • Gates powered? Yes

    Survivor on hook? Yes

    Camp survivor? No

Escort survivors out of exit and hand out free gazpacho? Yes

Play how you want - There's not really any need to justify what you do, but I'd suggest ignoring anyone complaining about camping during the endgame.

Thats how totem spots should work. Not next to a gen, not in the open, not in a hill but very well hidden. If all totems were very well hidden you would see more diversity with hex perks but spawn locations are so bad. But you're acting like cleansing 1 totem takes up a whole gen to do. If you are exclusively the totem hunter then maybe yes but 1 gen at most. But this is why you're a 4v1 your team mates should help you out. Don't blame the killer blame the team mates.

I always chuckle when an obvious totem ends up getting my team killed.

Your struggles, or lack thereof with NOED is pretty irrelevant to the discussion. The talking point is supposed to be that NOED can overly reward killers who were otherwise severely underperforming.

    Thanks for clarifying.

I see that the talking point was "The problem with NOED is that it requires absolutely no input from the killer in order to activate such a game-changing effect."

I think you're really going to hate Whispers, A Nurse's Calling, Discordance, Tinkerer, Brutal Strength, Rancor, etc.

Probably not going to be a fan of a lot of survivor perks either.

NOED doesn't really effect my games that much and it's generally easy enough to counter/avoid/escape depending on how I'm playing - I wouldn't really classify it as a 'game changing effect.'

I realize that it's anecdotal, but given that it's the same people complaining about it over and over, from thread to thread, I don't think I'm in the minority.

  • I do not struggle with NOED as a solo survivor.

Additionally, only one of my 3 builds runs a 'totem hunting' perk.

If NOED activates and the killer is camping, I'll take a quick look around for the totem and leave if I can't find it.

I usually cleanse 2-3 totems on my own, per game, when I'm not running my Det.H/HO/QQ/IS build.

When I'm running it, it's usually a guaranteed 3-4 totems....5 if the killer is playing really lax and/or struggling.

When I do play with my pal, she cleanses totems as she sees them, too.

NOED doesn't really impact any of my games in a meaningful way, regardless of what rank I'm playing at (usually Red depending on available time, but ranks are currently meaningless, imo), as a solo survivor - It honestly does not even activate in a fair portion of the games I play, and it's not even selected in an even larger portion.

  • @Firellius said:

Might've described it in another thread, actually...

'Perk tax' is where survivors are constantly told to fix bad game design by picking up perks.

    Spirit OP? Just pick IW.

    Camping? Just pick DS/BT.

    Tunnelling? Pick DS/BT.

    NOED? Bring SG/DetHunch.

    Slugging? Bring UB.

Ultimately, if the survivor doesn't want to be at the mercy of the killer for the possibility of having a fun, or even playable game, they need to sacrifice all their perk slots for band-aid perks.

DS, BT and UB are all rather situational perks. Whenever I play killer, they practically never fire unless I make the misplay to fall for a DS bait. But survivors pick them so damn often because they're mandatory if you want to avoid having your game ruined by camping, tunnelling, or slugging.

This idea of NOED, another thing that's no fun to play against, demanding another perk slot just puts more strain on survivor's perk choices, and it's pushing other decent, possibly more fun survivor perks down the list, like FTP, Appraisal, Deception, Diversion, and more.

Some of these game design problems need to be fixed externally as opposed to putting strain on survivor's perk choices.

Do you think killers have a 'perk tax?'

Self Care for extra survival points, small game for Boldness, and Prove Thyself to make getting the BPs easier.

    Ok so why….

Does Haunted Grounds activate and immediately notify survivors they’re exposed?

BUT NOED activates but doesn’t notify survivors?

At the point of activation for both perks (triggers being the totem cleansed and last gen popping respectively) the exposed effect applies.

Haunted Grounds, as I mentioned previously, is a special case.

Much like Hex Retribution, it is activated by cleansing as opposed to the totem gaining stacks (or in NOED's case, hopping onto a dull totem) to activate.

As the survivors are inflicted with a debilitating effect for a set duration, they're given the effect and duration info - There aren't any timed effects in the game (ie Pinky Finger, Legion Buttons, etc) that don't reveal this information.

  • @SirGando said:

Sometimes i feel like i would get an easy pip but its often just a blackpip.

So in my current build I run BT, DS, SB and Kindred. BT to get safe unhooks, DS to get an increased survival chance, SB to last longer in chases and Kindred for information.

Are there any other builds you guys would recommend for piping as survivor?

Are there certain things you can do to almost always secure a pip?

I asked him directly what it means but with my quick skim I am guessing it means 'using perks that should be base kit'?

Sorry if I am slow ^^" I am genuinely curious about other people's opinion on the game.

Back to this topic tho: I am not a very good player but as long as I play about 4 evening a week I get to red ranks quite easily. I have only been to rank 1 a few times but that was me playing a TON. Getting those pips are pretty easy if u simply do a bit of everything. Yah there are bad matches were you get a dc or bad teammates but playing a lot counters that hahaha.

I usually play a totem hunting build or a 'save my teammates' build and that has been enough to get me to red ranks constantly ^^ I know people find them fun but the meta perks are overrated imo. If you play smart they are not even needed and you 100% don't need it to get to red.

I honestly don't know what they meant, either. I thought it was something along the lines of "I can't bring Small Game - I have to bring Unbreakable in case I am slugged....I can't bring Small Game - I have to bring Decisive in case I am tunneled.....etc. These perks are required to cover holes in survivor gameplay / are mandatory."

I am straight up booty at this game and have hit R1 on both sides.

The only thing that stops a lot of people I know is that the number of pips required to rank up/time investment increases.

The game feels the same across most ranks to a lot of people, from my observations, at least.

I find info perks as solo are the most valuable.

My only advice is play lots and play smart ^^ I run Spine Chill, Bond, and Detective's Huntch a lot. My general goal each match is:

    - 2 gens

    - At least 2 totems but I tend to get all 5 ^^

    - 2 safe unhooks with heals (We'll Make It really makes this a breeze if you stuggle with this part)

    - 2 solid chases with the killer (this is usually where I fail and if I don't get this done its a safety pip) ;_;

Given your load out and the fact that you're saying you cleanse all 5 totems at times (I do, sometimes, too :3 ), I'd hate to see what that guy that's been talking about the 'perk tax' all day would think about people reaching R1 using whatever they want to use and not the 'mandatory' DS/BT/UB/DH builds.

When Myers pops his Tier 3 the Exposed status is revealed to all survivors. Not sure why this applies to perks but not Killer Powers.

The detrimental effects of all hexes are only revealed once they are applied - Once they are applied, the effect stays permanently from that point, hence the timing of the notification.

Killer powers/add-ons work in a similar manner, only their notifications end once the exposed effect ends (similar to when a totem - barring Haunted Grounds - as that starts a timer - breaks).

  • Forgot to mention that I also run Empathy at times instead of Kindred.

It's pretty underrated in solo, imo, as it lets you know where the killer is once he lands the initial hit/if he is continuing the chase.

  • Weird replies in here.

I survive at least 60% of my games across all ranks (solo....sometimes/rarely duo) with Self-Care/Kindred/Lithe/Botany Knowledge or We'll Make It/Lithe/We're Gonna Live Forever/Second Wind or Head-On/Inner Strength/Detective's Hunch/Quick and Quiet as my main builds depending on how greedy or altruistic I want to be.

Probably pip in at least 75% of them - It's very, very rare that I do not at least safety pip from just playing the game.

I'm rarely tunneled/camped flat out, and if I am, I can generally hold chase long enough so that gens get done and there's less rush to save me/trade aggro before all gens are done, which in turn provides additional time to find bones/disarm killer traps/etc.

Guess I got lucky and was skipped on the 'perk tax.'

  • @Rey_512 said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2450721#Comment_2450721

yup. It’s kind of silly that NOED only gives the notification after the killer smacks a survivor.

It's intended - NOED's existence is purposefully 'hidden information' for the duration of the trial until it either downs someone or is revealed in the perk screen.

The detrimental effects of all hexes are only revealed once they are applied.

  • If it's any consolation, since no one in your team traded aggro, they probably didn't pip either, assuming you're red rank.

No downs/hits = no altruism dor them

You leading the chase for the entire game = no evader for them

  • Curious as to what the consensus is regarding killers that 'play fair' all game only to get 'outplayed' by endgame DS / BT.

Both of these perks require significant time investments to play around in a trial, only to reach maximum efficacy endgame if you actually choose to do so.

NOED/DS/UB/BT/etc are not even the hardest perks to play around/counter that also involve time sinks and/or gameplay style changes.

There are a variety of perks on both sides that are harder to counter and way more impactful on the game.

Complaining about the RNG nature of totems is fairly moot in 2021 with all of the counters available - you're also not doing someone that actually brings Small Game any favors by not cleansing any totems you find, as the perk gets better as totems are removed.

I play mostly solo and use Detective's Hunch on 1 of my 3 preferred characters - I don't remember the last game I had wherein NOED popped and I thought to myself, "That was impossible to prevent/is impossible to counter." I guess it could be an issue if the totem is next to a hook, but, such an obvious totem should be cleansed ASAP - Leaving it up is just enabling such a play.

  • I find it interesting that people completely ignore every other perk/item/add-on (on both sides) that require a time sink or gameplay style change in order to counter.

It would literally take an hour+ to list them all and explain how the above applies to them all.

It's unfortunate that YOU seem to take offense at opinions that don't jive with your own and feel the need to attack/label people as a result.

One time the OP called me "bad" with Huntress because I disagreed that her power was easy to use. He was like "you don't speak for other peoples' experiences" while calling my experience with her bad?

    Edit: Ah here we are

It's best not to get too defensive/actively engage with people like that.

All of the ranged killers have their own nuances, however small, that separate good players from ok players and take time to learn.

  • Game is consistently in the top percentile in terms of player population in Steam and has an extremely stable playerbase. Your inability to understand the game's success when the data is literally in front of you is a 'you' problem.

It's unfortunate that YOU seem to take offense at opinions that don't jive with your own and feel the need to attack/label people as a result.

I'd really suggest joining a debate club if you can, as this is among the weakest positions anyone can take on a topic.

I'd also suggest learning how to analyze things comparatively, too (ie steamdb stats) - your previous claims show a severe weakness in this field as well.

To emphasize, I'm not bashing you, but your approach to discussion and your attempt at presenting evidence.

As you can see by the preceding posts, a biased approach is quickly dismantled.

Idk man when you're at 5 gens and you feel the need to do this Insidious

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/NEBD0NQCJHAU/image.png

And then proceed to continue to chase after one survivor despite three others willingly placing themselves in front of a Leatherface's saw and you don't use it on them because this one survivor- who didn't tbag, click, or do anything except go down within 45 seconds- for some reason has to die, to the point where you slug them for 3 and a half minutes to ""avoid DS"" while nodding the whole time, and literally allow other survivors to do gens in your face so long as they're not healing your precious slug...

Doesn't seem like you're in the mood to win, moreso in the mood to ruin someone's session.

Scenarios like this always remind me of:

I speak for everyone with working eyes who's attracted to men that Oni isn't just the most attractive killer, but he manages to be more attractive than the survivors. Here's a couple of reasons why:

    • He's very tall

I am NOT saying shorter men aren't attractive, on the contrary really, but Oni's height adds to his intimidation factor which is kinda hot in the scary way.

    • He's incredibly strong

Pre-entity with the little lore we have he was killing people with pure strength alone. Now I know what some of you are thinking "wait a minute, didn't he murder innocent people which makes him less attractive?" However, people that say that need to drop the guilty until proven innocent mindset as we haven't heard his side of the story yet. There's a very good chance those murders were in self-defense.

    • He's in peak physical form

If we get a good long look at his shirtless skin from the tome we can see that even in his old age that he's still swole. Take a look at his arms in that skin & tell me those are choke-slamming arms.

    • He's got great nails

Personally, I think people don't appreciate his nails enough. I'd say more, but I'd probably get banned for going into detail.

It's kinda sad he's one of the lesser played killers, but he is one of the harder killers so that's understandable. However, what isn't understandable is anyone saying he isn't the most attractive character as that opinion isn't based in the hard facts like mine are.

Oni may be the bravest killer <3

All missions, would be my guess. I've never actually let it come to that, tbh.

Same - I just had some IRL stuff to do and it got in the way of my usual end grind :(
