Can you just reveal every survivor's sexuality now and save everyone the trouble
I don't feel like getting surprised again a year later
Well if a character being gay bothers you so much, you very much deserve learning your mains are gay until you either learn to accept gay is fine or you leave.

Well we ended agreeing that it was not necessary to be David, which is more than i could have asked for.
Bear in mind that David sexuality not being specified was representative of more sexualities before than now.

There is no single argument there on why David is better choice than a new character.
I encourage you to take a deep breath before answering, you are not debating with someone who is gonna fall for provocations.
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2933296#Comment_2933296
Even if you might be biased i understand that you might like the anticipation of a character that represents not only your sexuality but your story around it.
This is in essence what i'm refeering to, there might be people out there that were not Gay that could relate to David until this point aswell.
Attachment to the fictional character.
There is no single argument there on why David is better choice than a new character.
Actually, there are many arguments, some a little above your comment. Let me tell you a few:
1. An LGBT character locked behind a paywall would cause outrage
2. A new character based around being LGBT would simply feel, let's say, exaggerated. It would make it seem their whole personality. You know, it screams tokenism.
3. The new piece of story fits PERFECTLY into David's lore and completes it entirely.

Similar opinions there, you both composed your answers with better rather than necessary. (Found that interesting)
Neither of you mentions any negative aspect on the reveal yet,
What happens to players that felt David as their choice to represent themselves as?
Well guess what, you don't have to play a character that represents you. Feng didn't represent me, I mained her in 2019. Nea didn't represent me, she was one of my mains. Meg didn't represent me, she was one of my mains. Nancy didn't represent me, she was one of my mains. Jill doesn't represent me, she is my main.
Gay people never had a character to represent them, yet they still played. So find a way to realize that if you need to play cishet straight masculine men to feel male, that's a you problem and not BHVR's

Yes they mentioned relationships in the lore which is fine. No different then the David instance. However they didn't make a big tweet about it for attention. But yes they did change his sexuality. Which BTW is the reason they had to do the tweet in the first instance. So let's say the never made the tweet. Now without the tweet, whose to say David had one instance of homosexuality and then never again? Without the tweet you could say he is homosexual and I could say he was straight, and neither one of us would have any way to prove this. They had to make a tweet to force the David change.
Also please don't just say I'm anti inclusion, A that's not an argument and B you know nothing about me.
When was David anything else for his sexuality to be "changed"? He never had a defined sexuality untill now.
The only reason I can think they made the Twitter post is because they wanted to tell people that this is the character they promised us, and the one made in colab with GaymerX

Dude, it's made a SMALL portion of the LGBTQ community happy. More straight people are happy for the LGBTQs than the latter. BHVR did bare minimum in regards to their respresentation. They didn't make a brand new character with perks, lore and cosmetics, they just announced out of the blue out of nowhere that David King is gay... I empathise more with THAT gripe. (personal note: Steve has that sailor outfit and they made the Peaky Blinder gay?)
Whenever I see someone saying this "they just put the gay tag on David" thing, I'm wondering, what part of the next tome being about his struggle as a gay person didn't you understand?

They should've just added the lore without making having to make a huge fuss out if it. That's how they would've done it properly.
The whole point of inclusivity is to state that "we exist, we're real and we're just like you". Making that huge Twitter post when the lore wasn't even out yet just shouts tokenism as loud as thunder, and I'm hating it.
Yeah, I agree 100% that the Twitter post was a really bad move.

If they think thats an issue they should think of a new character that actually makes sense to be LGBTQ. Announcing a random character to be gay all of a sudden is just forced inclusion and doesnt feel genuine.
No, they shouldn't. It's not forced. Read the tome when you unlock it, so you can see that it was well done.

I dont understand why BHVR felt the need to bring sexual orientation into DBD. I didnt think of any character as Straight or LGBTQ, cause it simply doesnt matter. It couldve happily stayed this way.
Because until David was revealed to be gay, the game was filled with straight relationships. Nurse+Wraith, Nurse+Husband, Frank+Julie, Felix+Wife, David+GF, Dwight+Female crush.

He kinda speaking the facts when we all know, those cosmetics were not made because he was gay.
Really? That's quite literally saying that only straight women like hot shirtless men. Not to mention it also feeds the stereotype that gay men can't be muscular or masculine.
And that is very wrong. In my entire DBD history (and it's been pretty long, since May 2016) I met hundreds of gay men and barely any straight women. This game has a big LGBT community, and a hot guy cosmetic is definitely not done just for the sake of women.

I think they're basically saying (like most people?) they don't have an issue with David, or any other character, being a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
It's just how BHVR went about it that they have an issue with.
I think that's a fair criticism.
Is that what LGBTism isn't phobic means? Lol.
What exactly would you have preferred to be done better yourself? The only part where I agree it was overdone is making the special Twitter post just for it.
Edit: also please don't try to protect this person. They had another comment in another thread about how LGBT isn't natural. So no, it's not that the OP doesn't like the way they did it. It's that they did it.

Not really because Nurse's husband has always been a core part of her backstory. David being gay has never been mentioned til now and all of sudden its all his character has become his entire backstory is now revolving around David being gay along with a huge announcement over it + a new terrible cosmetic that looks straight out of stereotypeville
So instead of assuming stuff, wouldn't it bw better if you actually waited to read the tome about David? You might be surprised but his old lore is still canon, we just learnt more about him. A survivor's very difficult past is worth being in a tome. This time the difficult past is how his life was garbo because of his homophobic parents.

I don't know what my mom really thought... She said she loved me for who I was but her actions said otherwise. She passed away from cancer years ago so I'll never truly know. But the rest of my family don't want me around. We all have different experiences and I just hope mine can help others.
Honestly, a real mother always finds a way to love you no matter how disappointed she is. Can I say that my mom was happy for me being pan? No, but she definitely didn't kick me out or something else.
By curiosity, where are you from?

As a gay man myself, people thought I was straight until I came out. I'm sure people felt the same way about me... Why did I have to turn straight or make a big deal about it.
I literally have relatives (aunts, uncles, cousins, sister, ect) who cut me off because of who I am. I lost great friendships because people have an issue with it. I don't know why, well I do in some situations, but they are all different.
People are going to judge. Best thing I can focus on is that BEhavior did the right thing and gave people like me a place to call home and a family for many of us who have none.
I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and PTSD from an anti-gay attack I was a victim of... and for a long time I hated who I was... Still do sometimes. A few months ago I quit playing this game because of a few bullies making fun of me for me losing a match... I attempted suicide. Long story short, I'm better now and trying so hard to love who I am today. Let the haters hate. Let's spread love in this game and community. That's the only way it stops being an issue. We may be a minority in society, but the true minority are the haters scared that we win. Let love win. 🏳️🌈❤
Damn, this makes me feel really lucky. My mom is very homophobic, but she just brushed it off when I told her I was pansexual. She still isn't acceptive of LGBT but doesn't care about whomever I like. She's more like angry that "they managed to corrupt you". She loves me too much to ever do anything to me for being pan.

It's special because it's the first one in over 50 characters the game has. It's an important part of representation.
Yeah, I don't agree with how they made a special Twitter post about it tbh, but there's nothing wrong with it.

Ask the people causing friction on social media. Don't shoot the neutral messenger. The point im making is that things like this wont be fully accepted by all, so those in favour of it, will just have to accept that not everyone else is. As for nurse, completely irrelevant that she was married, to me these purely a brilliant albeit controversial character within the game.
Ah, so we should allow hate to be spread just because it's normal for it to exist? Great mindset to have.

I don't understand why the sexuality of any character is a thing... it's not like it influences any in-game mechanics, and it's not something you can see. I get "representation", I'm part of a community that is not visually represented (i.e. there's no character that looks similar to myself), and I wish BHVR would do better with that. But in terms of inner-traits, why do we care and where do we stop? Should we address religion, political position, etc, as well?
Because the game has lore, and it adds up to the lore

I'm not sure if it can be separated out like that, and even if it can - it's really tricky and something I wouldn't necessarily trust anyone else to do. If I'd wanted to tell my kids about this stuff at 5...I'd want to be the one doing it.
You say 'dimmed attraction'...I'd reckon it's something a little different - either extremely innocent playing out of roles they've encountered in the world and in fiction (no education required) or something closer to friendship. When we say attraction in an adult context, there is a sexual or at least a romantic component, because that's what human 'attraction' is mostly. If what you're talking about is what I'm talking about (platonic attraction - ie. friendship), then it's probably unnecessary to teach kids about it - they already generally understand.
Granted it was a...very long time ago (I'm an old man), but I had plenty of female friends right up until I hit the 'girls are icky' phase and there was no attraction whatsoever. Entirely platonic - literally just friends. And. again, I don't think we need to teach kids that it's okay to be friends.
But let's drill down here. Be as specific as you can.
How would you go about teaching this stuff to a class of 5 year olds?
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2929625#Comment_2929625
Yeah probably for the best. I'm happy to have this discussion, but it's not one that I can really do justice while I'm cautiously trying to avoid getting into areas that are too sensitive. And yes, it does boil down to semantics at the end of the day - but sometimes, language is important.
I'll agree to disagree on this one and yeah, leave it there.
If I'd wanted to tell my kids about this stuff at 5...I'd want to be the one doing it.
See, that's where the issue lies. While you personally wouldn't mind telling your kids about LGBT in a bright matter, many parents either never teach their kids or, like my mom, teach me to hate LGBT. I grew believing I should hate myself for liking boys and girls.
Also, what I mean by that dimmed attraction, is that if I saw hot women or men I'd stare at that and be curious what's under the clothes. It isn't the way it is after puberty, it's just that it seems interesting, something fun to see. That's why I called it dimmed. It's barely there and far from the authentic thing.
-
@StarLost said:
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2929288#Comment_2929288
Mm. It's...complicated, but broadly - yes, I am. As so far as any sort of sex-ed goes in a scholastic context, I'm as against heterosexual sex-ed as I am against homosexual sex-ed for kindergartners.
It's not entirely sexual but yes, it does have an intrinsically sexual component - which is why we refer to it as a 'sexual identity'.
I don't think you can really detach 'attraction' from sexuality, because that's broadly what attraction is. It's not some vague notion of two souls finding each other - we are very much where the falling angel meets the rising ape, and 'attraction' mostly comes down to us wanting to pass our genes on.
I'm also not saying 'never', but I am saying that 5 is way too young to broach anything like this. And if that makes me some sort of retrograde dinosaur, so be it.
Generally though, school based sex-ed shouldn't be necessary at all. The fact that it is necessary is a failing of parents.
And yes, we disagree on some stuff. Is that a bad thing? I really hope you aren't going to try and spin this as 'StarLost is a massive bigot' again, because that's not at all what this is.
When it comes to extremely young kids - I'd rather be cautious.
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2929421#Comment_2929421
Of course not.
But I am saying that 5 is too young to be learning what 'gay' means. 5 is also too young to be learning what 'straight' means. Because 5 is a time of life where you're only just starting to understand what reading is.
I'm fine with this stuff being taught...frankly, I think 4th grade is still too young, but it's definitely better.
I totally disagree that kids have any idea of gender norms at 5. I don't think kids really even have a solid concept of gender at 5.
If you literally came out of the womb with an understanding of this stuff, I'm not sure how to even respond to that. And no, this isn't about the LGBT community, this is exercising a little bit of restraint when it comes to teaching extremely young children the facts of life.
And no, kids aren't smart. At all. Kids are kids. I think that any broaching of subjects like this are massively inappropriate until kids are a lot older, and that extends to any sort of formalized education about romantic attraction and sexual identity.
If kids are bullying other kids for whatever reason, stop it. But that's the age where you say 'bullying is bad' not 'bullying someone because they are gay is bad'.
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2929302#Comment_2929302
See - this is where language is so important.
When you say 'into' or 'learn about heterosexuality' what exactly do you mean?
I mean that kids learn from a very young age that boys like girls and girls like boys. And there's no one to teach them that that isn't always the case. And LGBT kids feel they are different from a lot younger than you would think. It's true that actual sexual attraction only kicks in during puberty, but a very dimmed kind of attraction is present from early ages.
I'm not saying that kids should be taught in detail about any sexuality (at least untill they're old enough). I'm saying, that just as a 4 year old knows that he will have a girlfriend (you know, in his understanding of what a gf is), what exactly is wrong about telling that kid something like "you can be together with whomever you like, regardless of gender". It's nothing sexual. It's nothing that corrupts the 4yo. As long as teaching the 4yo about straight people is fine, so is teaching about other people.

If you guys continue to ignore what I said then why're you guys still @'ing me? I didn't say anything about him being gay I said it shouldn't be a big deal he's gay and its not worthy of a huge long blog post for it.
And what about it was a huge deal? The post? Yeah, maybe it wasn't necessary and just a post like "Explore the new tome, where we get to dive into x and y's past, and get to learn more about the past of our first LGBTQIA2S+ character, David King" would have worked better.
Was the tome a big deal? I bet if they made a tome with Nurse and her husband, no one would complain that they make a big deal about Nurse being straight.
And this is a problem of modern society. Whenever LGBT people get representation, it's said to be forced or being made a huge deal. No, that's not the case. It's simply the fact that when straight people are represented, no one cares, but when it's LGBT, it's suddenly forced , because you're not used to it.

Yes.
I agree with it. Completely.
There is absolutely no need for any sort of sex-ed in kindergarten, whatsoever.
I was feeling I'm into anyone ever since I was like 5 or 6, but I didn't know what those feelings were, nor could I tell I was special because of that. I learnt about LGBT at 6, and was taught by my mom to despise it. At 10, I was lucky to learn on the internet that LGBT people don't chose to be so, and it's actually a way you're born. By 12, I had already figured out I was pansexual. Do you know how it felt to feel special, in a world where being special is despised by everyone around me? From 6-10 I was so scared that I was a weirdo for liking anyone. I thought I made some bad decisions perhaps.
LGBT people feel they're different from a much younger age than 2 digits. And by that point, you would most likely have been exposed to the LGBT, and unfortunately for most people, in a bad light. Kids learn about heterosexuality from very young ages (maybe 3, 4, 5), so what exactly is wrong in telling a 6-7-8 yo that there are some people that like their own gender, and they are just absolutely normal?

My mother accepts me as pansexual and her relationship with me is like nothing different than before I came out, yet she constantly speaks against LGBT. Is she not homophobic by your definition?

I´m angry not with making any character gay.
I´m angry with making an officially gay one of already existing characters. A lot of people loved David to be as he was before. Just leave it to everyone’s own interpretation!

Nice try, but my favorite skin is not shirtless, and I mostly used to play as Meg in a duo with my boyfriend as David. We both had chosen a survivor to represent ourselves, we always do the same in games which we are playing together. And I still think it´s unfair now to make David representing entirely other people, not his previous fans
"His previous fans" – I'm sorry, but the player base contains just as many, if not more gay men as straight women. Do I have a proof for that? No, I'm just guessing by looking at the amount of women I saw in comparison to the amount of people asking for shirtless guys.
Like 90% of David's fans were gay men anyway.

Honestly, I initially didn't like them making an existing character LGBT, but now I came to like it more than a new one. It's even cooler because it feels like a coming out, you know? David's always been gay, but we only learn it now.
-
My personal take (as a pansexual man) is that it's amazing they finally did this!
However, I feel a bit weird about this one... Is it because it's like a coming out, where you learn a big thing about someone? Is it because they shouted the news from the top of Mt Everest and posted the big announcement on Twitter, instead of just creating the tome? Idk why, but it's probably the first. I'm always surprised to hear people coming out, I guess it's part of the fact that I live in a hyper-homophobic country so I'm not accustomed to hearing other people are LGBT other than me...

Pretty kitty!
I didn't lie, I put the stamp on Holly and everything but she just sat there and looked at me. I told her she was supposed to go to your place but she determined she didn't want to walk that far.
Also also, Holly also likes to play in the bathtub for some reason. I wonder why that is, especially since cats stereotypically don't like water (Holly does not like water but likes to play in the tub with her little mice toys, most mornings I need to toss the mouse out of my tub).
Every single time I went to my godparents' house (they are kinda like grandparents to me, since 2 of them I never met, one died when I was 2 and the last one has dementia and barely remembers to eat), their cats LOVED the shower. Like, you open the bathroom door, and all of them jump in the shower. Idk why, but they're cute 😺

Say for example a perk for a killer that increases your movement speed by 20% and gives you the ability to insta down every survivor you hit.
Or for survivor same concept but makes it so the killer has to hit you an additional 2 times before you go down.
That there my friend is the concept of pay to win.
Dbd doesn't have a concept like that, yes they have a massive grind concept, but not a pay 2 win one.
Yes the shrine of secrets it's a matter of waiting for a certain perk to arrive, but it will come there and you are not forced to buy it with real money.
Sure you can buy the DLC with real money, but no one is forcing you to do so cause you can win just as easy without the dlc as with it.
The reason you must buy licensed dlc with real money is due to the fact that the license holder has to be paid, that goes for every game that has license characters in the game.
No killer, survivor or perks in DBD will guarantee you wins when you buy it.
Yes some perks are really good or strong if you want to argue, but still they don't guarantee you the win if you buy them early.
So you are telling me that getting stuff faster isn't an advantage, my friend?
My friend, if you, my friend, can pay to unlock an op item that otherwise you could only get through let's say 200 hours of gameplay, isn't that pay to win?
By your logic my friend if they add an item that costs 100K iri shards that allows you to press e to automatically kill everyone/escape, but you can also get it with real money, it isn't pay to win, because you, my friend, can still get it through playing.

Hey and we have another new player who got the facts wrong, or someone who is just trolling.
Pay to win means you can buy your advantage which you would get otherwise.
Like in fps for example where you buy a gun that you can't get buy playing the game.
It might look like a normal gun but instead if fires faster and does more damage than the normal gun.
That, my friend, is pay to win.
DBD is definitely not pay to win cause every perk you can get buy playing.
Pay to win means you can pay to gain an advantage. Unlocking things MUCH faster is an advantage.
The shrine of secrets is pure garbage. 48 perks are from the base game characters, while another big chunk is from unlockable characters, and only a small portion is license perks.
Look at DS: it hasn't been in the shrine for 4 months. Any new player that joined just after it left has been waiting for 4 months already to unlock ds, and they might as well need to wait a whole new year, based on luck (or should I say, lack of it?)

I play the game and unlock everything the same as you do, as do the other developers I know.
So you grind iri shards to unlock characters, or do you buy the dlc?

DBD its not pay 2 win you can literraly unlock DLC killers/survivors for playing the game you can get shards and dont spend them in anything and get 9.000 shards and thats a free killer surv unlocked yes you can buy them to unlock them sooner and faster but you can be patient and get shards by only playing you can buy an entire dlc whit 18.000 shards (27.000 if where talking about re) just be patient
See, can play to unlock doesn't mean there's no p2w. As I said in another reply on this thread, take Clash Royale: can you play a lot to unlock the op stuff? Yeah, it will simply take a VERY long time. Can you pay to unlock the op stuff, without having to wait months? Yes, and it will help you swipe the floor with the other f2p players.
Just because you can play 50 hours to unlock a character, it doesn't mean there's no p2w. You can either spend 50 hours to unlock the OP character (e.g. Mikaela for CoH), or you can spend money to quicky unlock them and ease your matches.
But it gets worse with licensed characters, where an entire part of the game is locked behind a paywall. If you want a certain perk (e.g. DS), you have to pray it will appear in the shrine (which btw, contains 48 perks that you can unlock base game)

SBMM is the whole system, MMR is the personal score that you have within that SBMM.
Ranks are not Grades - they were changed to make it clearer that rank is not used for matchmaking and also made so that you can't go down a grade
Game is definitely not pay to win, especially when the Nurse is a free DLC - even perks are on the Shrine of Secrets.
The grind exists whether you have a DLC or not, you still have to level up characters to get the perks
The community is the community, it's also a PVP game so there's always going to be friction - that's the very nature of these types of games.
Saying that because the shrine of secret exists, the game doesnt have p2w mechanics, is pretty weird.
Remember Clash Royale? You could get all of the cards by playing, but that would take extremely long, while people who use money to get the cards faster were wiping the floor with f2p players.
While not on the same scale as CR, DbD still has this unfair mechanic of people paying being able to unlock winning tools much easier (seriously, with 4 perks/week, out of which 48 are base game, it could take years until you finally see the perk you need in the shrine)

Since the cam swing doesn't really work anymore, some think its a stealth nerf and others think it's a bug. Is there any official comment on this?
Thank you very much for necroing the thread so I get people at 11PM my time flooding my email regarding an opinion I may as well no longer hold. Make a bug report if you think it doesn't work, don't necro a 2 month old thread.

Hag would, literally, be an M1 Killer without the camera-effect.
Survivors: Oh no! I popped a trap that in no way altered my direction or otherwise prevented me from running to the next loop with my Dead Hard because they removed the camera-grab!
Like it or not; it's part of her power and it's MEANT to mess with players.
@CharlieChatBox said:
Out all things to complain about regarding Hag, you choose one of the things that is actually counterable. Look at the trap before it pops.
If anything, why aren't there more threads complaining about the ability to leave traps uber close to hooks, or in basement?
Please check when the thread was made before replying. I am on a break from DbD nowdays, so I really don't hold any opinion about this subject anymore.
A mod, please lock this thread. My phone notifications went crazy last night from my email inbox being flooded with comments from the necro.
