We did not. In fact, we've said the exact opposite: We do not consider it a fix to the grind in the slightest, it's an improvement to grade rewards, nothing else.
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2850459#Comment_2850459
I can also confirm that we don't see it as something that encourages people to play more. A certain amount of grinding, sure, it can give you a goal to work towards and keep you interested. But if it becomes too much, then the goal feels unattainable and you lose interest in trying to achieve it.
To the original topic: It's too early to share details now, but we have a massive grind reduction in the works. I'm looking forward to the day we're finally able to share it with everyone.
That would be fantastic if this is true. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing what it is!

Have you considered switching to killer? YOU could be the difference! A killer who doesn´t tunnel at all!
Keep us informed how it goes.
This is the best response related to tunneling complaints that I have seen yet. Well done!

Hexes are mostly useless against good survivors who know where all the totem spawns are, and half the time totems spawn next to gens or in glaringly plain view, so I view both the old and new version of Ruin as pretty bad.
-
Some very easy solutions to implement would help a lot:
- Remove perk tiers
- Trade-in system to sell your existing items/offerings (maybe get back like 1/3 of original BP cost or something like that). So many BP get spent on useless add-ons and offerings
- alternative to #2 - eliminate the least-used add-ons and offerings
Unfortunately, I don’t think the devs actually want to reduce the grind. They’ve acknowledged that they know it sucks and is a point of frustration for some players, so it’s a known issue and they’ve chosen not to do anything about it.

Killers can easily tunnel throght bt ds and unbreakable so yeah tell me more how is that fair if a killer fully commits to you for literally no reason!
I can think of a reason - the killer is trying to get a kill?
-
Don’t worry about other people telling you what is or isn’t “fun”. If you enjoy playing this way, and it’s not against the game rules, you play however you want to play. Getting genrushed by a pro SWF team is also boring, but I guarantee you those players don’t care how their play style affects the killer’s enjoyment of the game.
-
The grind absolutely turns off new players. I had some friends buy the game the same time I did. They all played it for a bit, but lost interest quickly because of how stupidly insane the grind is. They didn’t even bother logging in for free daily BP when those were offered because they’re like “what’s the point?” Luckily I found a few others who still play the game that I can join for SWF when I play survivor. Even I have gotten to the point where if I take a break and don’t play DbD for a while, I feel like I’ve fallen a mile behind because of the ridiculous number of perks now. And if I ever want to play a new character, I have to go through the slog of pumping millions of BP mostly into useless add-ons, offerings and junk meme perks just to get the perks I want on that character.

Given that this is probably the most unified I've seen the player base (in terms of opinions on overall game state / fun), I'm almost certain that CoH or DH will be slammed soon to placate people.
I'd imagine this will be followed shortly (or simultaneously) with a face camping and/or NOED nerf.
Just conjecture, but one has to assume some type of offering will be made to placate the mob.
Doubtful. DH has been complained about forever and they haven’t touched it (personally I don’t really care that much about DH, but survivors who use it then have no right to criticize killers for whatever “crutch perks” they use.
As for CoH, I also doubt it will be further nerfed unless killer players start leaving the game in droves, which they haven’t (yet). There are still enough killer players who suck it up and deal with it to keep the survivor queue times from getting out of control.
-
That’s a great question. I think it speaks a lot about how killer players are treated vs survivors players. I remember at least one example of a killer bug exploit that was bannable. Apparently bug exploits on the survivor side are totally fine

It's bad enough we had regular cheaters to deal with
Now people have built in cheats to abuse. Some dbd content creators even showing it off to people/making videos using it.
Pathetic really
It is pathetic how slow the response is to this bug being fixed. I wonder if killers had permanent wall hacks instead of survivors, would the devs still take so long to fix?

It doesn't even matter because matchmaking is all over the place. One game I'm matched with friends I know from the comp scene for a 20k hr survivor lobby and the next game I'm matched with people who run in circles doing nothing while I'm on hook with Kindred. There's zero consistency. You can have high or low MMR and it's still going to find the fastest match for you above all else.
Right, exactly. SBMM doesn’t even work, so you can’t even tell if you’re high MMR based on the other players you’re matched with

Well, I won't be using the term "holding the game hostage" about DBD in that sense anymore, but I will reiterate that it is still in fact stopping the flow of the game for an individual.
If you claim that playing killer ties your hand to camp and tunnel, then that is a stupid argument that doesn't have a solid argument whatsoever.
That's like me, a survivor main saying, I can't win as a survivor unless I gen rush. Which is also a stupid claim. People CHOOSE to camp and tunnel just like how people CHOOSE to gen rush and do other stupid things like that.
Nothing forces you to play a certain way. Get real.
Try playing killer and get kills without any camping whatsoever. Let us know how it goes

I literally said that it halts the game for another individual in the past two posts. So... I think I know the older version of the term correctly.
I think I used the term wrong for DBD though. My mistake and lesson learned.
Camping is not holding the game hostage, for either a team or for an individual player. It’s a legit strategy and BHVR have said this only about 8,000 times. If killers played the way you want, they would lose 99% of their matches and have a miserable time.

If I ever saw Clown in a match, I might agree with this…

Perks like Noed, Make your choice especially, and Devour Hope are probably gonna be some of her best.
Agree with this. Any perks that rely on exposed status will help a lot with her. I like to play Wraith occasionally and the only way to make him have a chance against the CoH meta is to use one of those perks (I really like MYC on Wraith). I don’t play Sadako but seems like MYC would be great on her as well

There are a few small topics I want to touch on here, but I'd like to preface this with the obligatory do not harass the devs disclaimer. I'm not trying to direct hate towards anyone at BHVR as I know they're just trying to do their jobs, but I think all feedback is important, regardless of whether it's good or bad.
To start with, I love the recent comparisons with hockey because it shows the massive rift in understanding of the game between the devs and the playerbase. DBD is not hockey (roll credits) and I think that should be abundantly clear. The comparison to a sport like hockey implies that DBD is a symmetrical competitive game with clearly defined win conditions, of which it is none; DBD is an asymmetrical party game with a great many ways to get to the end result of either kills or escapes.
What do I mean by that? Well, in hockey the literal only way to win the game is to score more goals than the opposing team, and the only way to score those goals is to take repeated shots on goal. In DBD on the other hand, it's not that simple. As killer there are multiple ways I could go about achieving a 4k — I could 4 man slug and bleed people out on the ground, I could tunnel out one survivor then deal with the rest, I could facecamp and bank on NOED, or I could shoot for a 12 hook. I'm pretty sure we can all acknowledge which of those things is the most skillful way to play, yet the system as it stands disincentivizes that playstyle because it doesn't care about the nuances of how you play, but only the end result.
Going for a lot of hooks as killer inherently decreases your chances of getting kills, but it's typically the most fun way to play for all parties involved. Along the same vein, playing super altruistic and trying to get as many people out as possible inherently increases your chances of dying, but it's typically the most fun way to play. The MMR system actively punishes you for being the one to go for saves or for being the nice killer who doesn't like to tunnel.
Essentially what I'm saying is the notion that the current MMR system can work is predicated on the idea that all players are the same and only play with the end goal of kills/escapes in mind. The issue there is that leaves no room for anyone just playing for fun, and even I am finding myself shying away from playing weaker killers or off-meta builds anymore because of the competitive mindset that is being forced on the entire playerbase.
It's not about the metaphor itself, but more the general attitude conveyed by it. The devs believe the nuances of how you play do not matter because of the general idea that skilled players win more often. But how do we define skill? What is a win? Is it more important that people prioritize kills by any means and only run the best builds with the best items/add-ons, or more important that we just let people play the game and have fun? I'm probably not the first killer main to say I had more fun in the days of old DS and old Object, not because of unfair and unbalanced perks, but simply because despite all the broken and busted things, underneath there was a cool party game where winning and losing wasn't the only thing on my mind.
I don’t think anyone needs further convincing that Patrick’s analogy was terrible 😂
-
I’ve also pointed out recently the downward trend in players on Steamcharts. People like to argue that it’s only one platform, but do you really think the trend is much different than other platforms and if so, what makes you believe that? It’s likely that the trend is similar across platforms. I guess maybe you could argue that PC has other good new games out that other platforms don’t and that’s the reason for the recent drop.
Anyway, I don’t point out the negative trend because I want the game to die. I really do enjoy the game and want it to thrive, but I feel like recent changes in the past few years have heavily favored the SWF audience and have made playing killer a lot less fun. Some of the changes have also heavily encouraged unfun play styles such as tunneling, slugging and camping. I really believe that the devs being too slow to implement improvements and at times flat out ignoring community feedback is the main cause of the recent decline and that they make some changes to improve the game for both sides and hopefully reverse the declining player trend. Not trying to be toxic or overly negative

It’s a for-profit business, so every decision is made with impact to the bottom line in mind. Buffing killers or nerfing survivors is going to lead to more survivor players quitting the game or at least playing less. Since at least 80% of the players are survivor mains (it’s probably more than that given the generally long queue times for survivors), that’s going to have a bigger impact on revenue/profit than killer players leaving the game. It’s a balancing act, and it seems their strategy is to make SWF as fun as possible while making killer just barely fun/fair enough to maintain the bare minimum number needed to keep the game alive without AI killers.
-
Best way to deal with campers is to not get caught first
-
SBMM might as well not exist, because I get matched against brand new players, god-level pros and everything in between
-
Unfortunately, I don’t think BHVR is ever going to do something about this problem. Due to the current terrible state of game balance, there is already a shortage of killer players. They need every killer they can possibly get in the “general” pool of players to keep survivor queue times from getting so long that players quit the game. Segregating new killer players from the “general” pool would mean even longer queue times —> players quit —> revenue drops.
-
Not surprising. SBMM is a dumpster fire. What a great way to encourage new players to stick with the game 🙄
-
Pretty burned out now. I’m enjoying the game less and less and have gotten to the point where I’m only playing a couple times a week

@Chocolate_Cosmos said:

No, because the game needs a laundry list of changes to improve quality of life for both sides a lot more than it needs new content.

I mean it obviously isn't working the way we were promised it would. They specifically advertised it with phrases like "Being left on first hook after looping the killer all game while your teammates escape? Don't worry! Your MMR skill will go up and the next game will be better!" All these calculations and stats aren't taken into anything and it's just kills/escapes and that's it.
It's poopy and we want it gone right? Maybe if we make enough noise they'll actually have to pay attention.
Nothing will change unless people stop playing the game, and even then I’m not sure things would change. Players are leaving the game and there doesn’t seem to be any urgency by the devs to address the most commonly complained-about issues.

I just realized when it comes to "worst times of dbd" ppl have various opinions, some say it was when old Legion came out, some ppl say Halloween chapter with old DS, some even say when Spirit came out and she was busted.
But like.. did you guys forget how it was when Ash came out with Mettle of Men? You had every single lobby every single survivor using Mettle of men cuz this perk was that op and busted, you literally couldnt play any other Killer except Nurse, Legion or Huntress cuz these Killers didnt really used M1 hits so you could play around Mettle of Men.
I am still having nightmares of Mettle of Men to this day, Ash vs Evil dead was truly one if not the worst time in dbd by far, it was the most toxic and most unfun time in the whole life span of this game and I remember clearly how so many ppl where complaining and how many Killers quit playing because of this perk, myself included. I was even so done that I started playing Franks mixtape Legion only just to ######### up survivors and let them bleed out on the ground to show them how "fun" dbd was.
Old Mettle of Man was rightfully nerfed immediately. There are still broken perks and now we have boons to deal with too, which haven’t been touched other than a meaningless slight nerf to heal speed on CoH

I just really like replying to them and since I play nice most of the time its fun to laugh at whatever insult or accusations they come up with. I particularly love when they themselves were toxic or in the case of them saying you use crutch perks and they also use crutch perks and you get to call them out on it. A particular favourite I obtained was "-rep camped and tunnelled off hook because they're a pea brain and kept replacing the same 4 traps I disarmed" when I was using the purple bag addon(the one that ya know doesn't let you move traps.) another was "level 5 and only use noob killer l2p" they meant rank 5 and I was playing billy which is the first time I've heard billy being called a noob killer haha. Something about toxic comments really just brings a smile to my face when I get to close DBD and see 3 steam notifications.
this kind of attitude just encourages even more toxicity in the game/community

You can be constructive and share your feedback on forum, but this... this thread doesn't do anything helpful rather than collecting even more salt.
So the only two choices are 1) shut up and keep playing the game or 2) shut up and and stop playing the game? Is there a third option allowed where we keep playing the game and also try to provide feedback for improving it? The main reason I posted this was to point out that BHVR not listening to player feedback might be a factor in the declining player count

@Bwsted said:
There's no flow of incoming new players because the barriers to entry (aka the grind) are too high. 191 perks, 3 tiers of each, 50 odd characters, some locked behind a paywall, polluted bloodwebs and abysmal bloodpoint gain.
Even if you only wanted to unlock the meta stuff and be done with it, you may have to spend a thousand hours doing so for a handful of killers and a single survivor.
1.5x bp for a week? That's a slap in the face compared to the years worth of grind to just get the stuff you need to play reasonably.
And the new players who were brought in with the big licenses have left once the hype worn off and they realized what lost cause they had waiting in front of them.
Add to that the hacking epidemic, killers having to contend with gen speed and map design, survivors rolling the dice every trial knowing that if they get found first they'll be camped and tunneled out of the trial and otherwise they're condemned to a game of holding m1.
Tl;dr the gameplay is stale, the meta is obnoxious and the grind is unbearable.
I’ve seen this with some of my friends who used to play the game with me occasionally but basically stopped altogether. Their biggest complaint/reason for not playing was how much time they would have to put in to get the characters and perks they wanted. BHVR needs to understand that while yes the grind might keep some current players putting more hours into the game, it’s also likely turning away a lot of new players.
-
What if the killer changes their name after every match?
-
I’m like many others who have replied - not enjoying it as much as I used to. The devs have tilted the balance of the game so much in favor of strong SWF teams that playing killer against them is incredibly unfun and frustrating, at least for a casual player like me. That’s not to say that I don’t have still have fun matches, but it seems to depend a lot on the time of day I play (sweaty SWF teams being much more prevalent at night in my time zone).
On the survivor side, solo q is miserable most of the time, so I will only play if I can pull in another friend or two. The main frustration with playing survivor is that SBMM is effectively useless during the evenings when queue times are super long, so I usually get matched against god-level killers or brand new killer players.

Do you have bamboozle? I would argue that's his best perk on most maps. Without it you are gonna be forced to M1 alot and can get looped pretty hard at jungle gyms and the shack, let alone god windows.
My go-to for a random map is Corrupt, Pop, Bamboozle, Tinkerer. That gives you a bit of everything.
Bubba can get away with alot of off-meta stuff though since his basekit is so strong.
I use a similar build, but use BBQ instead of Tinkerer for the BP. I’ve also been using Pain Resonance in place of Pop, which seems to give me more slowdown value as long as I can get hooks consistently. Another piece of advice is don’t feel bad about camping - it’s what Bubba was born to do. You can snowball your pressure a lot if you can down down a potential unhooker
-
@NOEDENJOYER said:
How are you supposed to play killer and enjoy it? Every single game you're faced with a healing boon, four DH's and back to back safe pallets on large maps that make downing survivors an actual chore and miserable task.
You managed to injure a survivor, but make the wise choice to leave them because they're at a strong structure, or to defend a specific generator? Well, don't worry, for all your efforts that injured survivor will become healthy in less than 30 seconds, even though it probably took you that exact time to injure them. And the best part is, there's nothing you can do. Want to go break the boon? Enjoy sacrificing precious generator pressure to remove the boon for a mere 30 seconds before it's inevitably replaced and you've gained nothing as a result.
Did you manage to outplay a survivor? Well don't worry, they'll simply press E to the safe pallet and reset the entire chase. Don't forget that on any large map, you'll face survivors who will hold W for a solid minute before you can even think about getting past their DH and the countless safe pallets they have back to back.
Are you struggling to apply pressure because the survivors have an infinite pool of healing via the boon and their second chance perks? Well, suck it up, because that's fair. But don't even think about tunnelling, or camping, because you're scum if you do that.
Playing killer is so fundamentally unfun against these two perks. COH promotes a tunnelling, camping & nasty playstyle since you can no longer use hit & run tactics. DH makes every chase twice as longer as it should do because it practically grants a survivor with a third health state.
I've been a killer main since 2019, and I can firmly say the existence of COH & DH has tanked any enjoyment I have for the killer role. I've been playing survivor and been having a blast at how easy it is, even in solo queue.
Anyone else feel the same way?
Yep I feel the same way, and lots of others do too. Just look at Steam Chart player numbers and survivor queue times since COH and SBMM were introduced to see how players really feel about these changes

Maybe nerf his chainsaw charge speed add ons a bit and he’d be great to play again. This will never happen because it would require BHVR admitting they made a huge mistake with they changes they made to him
-
A lot less than I used to. I used to play 3-4 night a week, and now down to maybe 1-2. When I do play at night, I almost always play survivor with another friend or two. So then what's the point of SBMM?
The problem really isn’t SBMM. The problem is that there aren’t enough killer players (BHVR will never give us the ratio of killer to survivor players, but the killer shortage is blatantly obvious with the survivor queue times). Survivors would have to wait far longer to get a killer that falls within their standard MMR range. To keep survivors from quitting the game due to long queue times, a survivor team will get paired with next available killer regardless of MMR. So you’re absolutely correct to ask “what’s the point of SBMM?”
If the devs would fix the balance issues that make playing killer miserable, the SBMM system would fix itself
