  • I'd say Distressing is a better perk than Whispers, because having a huge terror radius makes it less necessary to know whether the survivors are nearby as far as Static Blast is concerned, plus it gives you a lot of bonus bloodpoints.

At low ranks, Huntress' Lullaby is also a great perk on Doctor, because in combination with his passive "insane" skill checks, it makes them very difficult to hit, so good for tracking and slowdown.

Ruin is good as long as you can keep up pressure and stop them working on generators, which the Doctor is good at since you can't repair while in T3 Madness. If you're going to use Ruin, though, I would suggest you try Surveillance over Discordance, as the two synergise quite well.

Rancor isn't bad, but if you're using it for tracking rather than for last-minute obsession kills, Bitter Murmur is a better pick overall.

  • Normal, yes. Fair, absolutely not. As others have mentioned, though, the devs are working on a new matchmaking system which should fix at least some of the issues with the current one.

As a veteran player, I like the game a lot, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I never expected it to be perfectly balanced. Sure, there are things about it that frustrate me, but I went into the game knowing that those things existed, so I tend to have a more mild reaction along the lines of "that really ought to be fixed" when something goes really wrong.

  • The gameplay is fun, as long as you don't expect things to be perfectly balanced. As the game currently stands, sometimes you will get screwed over by RNG, or matched with players who are way better than you are, and you need to be able to shake it off and not let it ruin your day.

There are two main problems with high ranks: the first is that it's too easy to get there, especially for survivors, so there's a huge skill discrepancy that there shouldn't be. The second problem is that, as easy as it is to get there, a lot of people at high ranks are serious tryhards who leave no room for goofing off or having fun (which is fine, but not everyone enjoys playing like that, or playing with other people who play like that).

The hatch spawns in a random location every time (a lot more random than the generators, incidentally).

Beyond that, there are a few things you should be aware of as a new player:

    • The grind is indeed hefty. You need to be okay with using the resources you've got and not necessarily having access to the strongest builds right off the bat, because it will take you a long time to get ahold of all the meta perks, especially if you're only playing a couple of games a day.
    • The learning curve is steep, especially for survivors. It will probably take you a couple of hundred hours to become decent at the game. My brother has 250 hours, and I would say he has just reached acceptable (read: non-potato) levels of skill as a survivor, and is decent at some killers.
    • Start with whichever role you feel more comfortable with, but you should be aware that you will have a harder time starting off as survivor. All killers have higher kill rates at low ranks, because killers tend to dominate when neither the killer nor the survivors know what they're doing. So if you do choose to start with survivor, remember that it will feel really hard at first, but it only gets easier from there.

As for tips, I would refer you to the Guides section here on the forums. There are guides there for new survivors, new killers, tips on how to play specific killers, and a lot more. You can also find a lot of new player tutorials on YouTube (though some, admittedly, are better than others).

  • That's a question for DBD Mobile Support. The mobile dev team is entirely separate from the main dev team, and the mobile team aren't on these forums, so there's no one here that can answer that.

You can contact Mobile Support here: https://dbdmobile.helpshift.com/a/dead-by-daylight-mobile/?p=all

That being said I do agree the grind for iridescent shards should be reduced. (Short answer)

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1190759#Comment_1190759

(Long Answer) The thing is, shards haven't changed much if at all ever since they and the shop were introduced alongside the Curtain Call Chapter which introduced Kate Denson and the Clown 2 years ago in 2018 (almost half the game's lifespan so far since the fourth year anniversary comes up in June). That was the 8th chapter, and since then number of DLC Chapters and characters has more than doubled (chapter 16 will be coming in May / June but there are also the paragraphs-not-chapters to consider) since then. Making the grind much more difficult than it was back then, simply because there are so many more characters to work toward and unlock.

    Disconnected Veterans

When it comes to these kinds of questions I think veterans like us are a bit detached or disconnected from that issue until we're reminded of it, because more or less we've been keeping pace with the game's progress and content released. If we want the game to continue on an upward path however, we need to facilitate the entry of new players, and the grind is a serious issue for them when new characters and perks are constantly being released on a regular schedule. It's important to regularly maintain the mindset of "If I was a brand new player who just bought the game an hour ago, what would I think?"

If you want further proof of this, notice that you yourself @Fibijean Have made over 7,000 posts and the guy you're talking to, has made one. (As of the time I am writing)

Long-term viability for the lifetime of the game

So the answer here from a business standpoint @Fibijean is actually yes. Having too many characters and perks and other things to grind for can be so intimidating to new players that it'll end up pushing them away. The question is when? How do you know when you have so many characters that the grind becomes insufferable for a brand new fresh players and faces? You can make the argument it's not now, and there might be some room to make that point, but the reality is that at the pace DBD is releasing content, EVENTUALLY a change has to be made.

    The Grind

When people talk about the grind they talk about Bloodpoints and whether or not perk tiers should be removed considering the 100+ perks there are and whether or not prestiging a character is even worth it because the grind to P3 is so freakin slow. But iridescent shards are ALSO part of this conversation since it's the primary way you see new players able to play all the fun characters we get to play like Deathslinger, Spirit or their favorite survivor they identify with like Jeff Johansson or Kate Denson. Unless you want to shell out more than triple the cost of the game to buy every single chapter with actual money (and somehow I don't think someone new who doesn't even know if they like the game or not won't want to do this). Which I think even the developers know your average consumer isn't going to realistically do

TL;DR People don't buy additional DLC unless they like the core product. It's a bit more difficult to like the core product when the full experience is locked behind either those same paywalls or an intense grind. Pick your poison so to speak

And I may not know what it is like to grind for a character that costs 9,000 iridescent shards but I do know what it is like to grind for a cosmetic that costs 13,500. That is not a quick grind

A real life example of a solution to this problem

Take League of Legends for example, the game quite literally has over 100 playable characters. Would the game really have the millions of players it has if every character was worth the same 6300 blue essence (their in game currency) that the newest characters are worth? Probably not. The oldest characters are actually worth much, much less of the in-game currency at some 1350 blue essence. I only recently started playing within the last year because of some friends, but from what I've heard from them who have been playing on and off for the past couple of years, the grind specifically for new players has been dramatically reduced. Your first couple of levels you are rewarded with a kind of case that gives you three characters "shards" one of which you can upgrade permanently to own that character for free and the other two shards you can keep to buy that character for a reduced Blue Essence cost. If you don't like that character at all, you can disenchant that shard for blue essence itself which you can obviously use to buy the characters you do want. The newer the character the shard belongs to, the more blue essence you get. After about 10 or so levels of being rewarded like this you start to earn a different case that gives you only 1 shard for some random character that you can upgrade for a reduced blue essence cost or disenchant for blue essence. But the levels themselves are far easier to gain at lower levels now than they were a couple years ago so even earning characters after you've exceeded the initial "new player buffer" is easier than it once was.

Back to DBD, does DBD have over 100 characters? No, we've got almost 20 killers (19 specifically) and almost 20 survivors (21 specifically) with absolutely no difference between the gains of a veteran player who has the knowledge of how systems work (how to earn BP more quickly and things like that) and a greenie who might have seen some gameplay, but doesn't know squat about the in-game systems and mechanics that take place. With absolutely no "new player buffer" like they have in League for the greenie in DBD, just have at it, and if you stick around long enough figuratively banging your head against the wall in the midst of matchmaking issues which pit you up against players with hundreds of hours, you get to make it to the other side and have experienced conversations with the rest of us. What kind of a welcome is that??

    Concluding / sOLUTIONS

I'm not saying, that there shouldn't be any grind in DBD there should. At the end of the day the grind in a weird kind of way is part of the fun, it gives both you and me something to work toward. At the same time, the devs should be making money off of the content they produce, but if we want to make the game viable for the long term and encourage new players to stick around, they need to be provided incentive to play beyond the fun / scary horror gameplay DBD is known for. Those small successes that slowly build a player up until they've amassed the knowledge and experience to know their preferences, what to do, how they want to do it, etc.

Personally, I think the idea of making older characters cost less iridescent shards is a great one, it doesn't sacrifice the core integrity of the grind but it gives new players the opportunity to expand beyond what they're given at the very start. The ability to try new things, and incentive to stick around for longer to the point where if they feel comfortable with buying original (or more likely the licensed) content DBD has to offer they know whether or not it's worth it. I mean that or make iridescent shards easier to earn across the board as OP suggested, but regardless something needs to be done. Maybe not now, maybe not even soon, but eventually at some point in the future the current grind is simply not going to support the amount of content DBD will have.

And to a certain extent BHVR already does this, whenever DLC goes on sale the oldest DLC goes on sale for the biggest discounts some 50% off or more, while the new stuff is discounted for less at 10/15/20% off give or take. That's still taking the core concept of the newest stuff being the most valued and older stuff being cheaper, all that needs to be done now is take that concept and apply it to the in-game currency for characters.

While I understand the point you're trying to make, I think I understand the new player experience better than you're giving me credit for, as I've spent a lot of time watching and discussing the game with my brother, who started playing last November, in recent months. He has never expressed an issue with the character grind, since the DBD DLC is actually relatively cheap and the five free characters kept him happy enough until he felt ready to branch out and buy more. He has problems with the bloodpoint grind, which I think is a potential issue, but I think there's a definite distinction to be made between the two in this case.

In terms of my personal history, I spent a large proportion of my childhood saving up for Sims expansion packs. I was usually only able to buy maybe 4 in a year, and in the meantime I kept myself happy with what I had. Did I want those games and feel jealous of people I saw who had them? Absolutely, but I was okay with not being given them and having to work for them myself. And those games were way overpriced, and a lot of the content in them was very obviously eliminated from the base game just so that they could sell it as an expansion later.

Point being, given my own background and what I've observed in new players who I admire and respect as people, I honestly have a difficult time believing that the issue with the shard grind is anything more than one of entitlement. I could very well be wrong about that, and perhaps there's an argument to be made that it's good business practice to cater to your audience regardless of whether their wants are reasonable or justified, but so far I haven't seen a lot that suggests otherwise.

And I'm aware that might come across very patronising, but the reason I include all that stuff about my own personal experiences isn't to suggest that I'm better than anyone else, but just to explain what my opinions are informed by, in the same way that anyone's views are informed by their background and experiences, so that you can better understand why I take the position that I do.

Sorry for the confusion, I've had no sleep haha and I know that killer mains are good at what they do no matter who they pick but I know of trapper mains, Doc mains and even legion mains but i get what your saying.

Lol no worries, happens to the best of us! Admittedly, I don't follow a lot of streamers on Twitch, so there are probably a lot out there that I don't know about.

I think he means specific killer and like they only player 1 killer.

Right, thank you, that makes a lot more sense now.

@OP I don't personally know any of those, because although most people do have a main that they play whenever they can, I've never encountered a streamer who exclusively plays a particular killer.

  • What exactly is a pacific killer? I'm genuinely confused, that seems like a rather self-contradictory term.

  • As a player, I'd love it if they did, but should they, considering that shards are essentially a free way to get something you would otherwise pay money for? I don't think so. To me, it seems reasonable that if someone is going to get something that costs money for free, they had better be willing to work hard to earn it.

Well I say "most people" from what I've seen, whether that's true or not is not really my point, my point is that it's a more common game recording software that's easily accessible for those who own a NVIDIA graphics card.

As far as players that don't though, i'm not really familiar with other recording software to speak of, so I guess i'm not qualified to bother with this question as a result. My original understand was that Geforce Experience can be used by everyone, but limiting it to only those with a specific graphics card is something I didn't expect.

Sometimes a question looks easy enough to answer at first glance, but you've known me long enough to know that I sometimes forget about other possibilities as well when a question comes up. I don't do it as often anymore, but it sometimes happens still.

That's alright, none of us are perfect! I'm sure everyone around here appreciates the effort you put into trying to help people regardless ๐Ÿ˜Š As for the GeForce thing, the software is made by NVIDIA, so I guess it makes sense that it would only be compatible with their hardware. That being said, GeForce GPUs are very common, so it's not an unreasonable expectation that the majority of people would have access to the software.

  • @FireHazard said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1190187#Comment_1190187

I wasn't aware that Geforce Experience only responds to NVIDIA graphics cards, somewhat of a foresight if you ask me.

Regardless, the recording software most people use is Geforce Experience, anything else would require a bit more digging to use as an alternative. As for Console, that's and entirely different process which I personally don't have any information on (since I don't play the console version OR play console in-general anymore).

I think "most people" is a bit of a presumption and probably more people use alternatives than you're giving them credit for, but that's neither here nor there as far as this discussion goes. Point is, there are a bunch of possibilities as to what the video might have been recorded in, and we'll need more information before we can answer the question properly.

  • It's worth noting that GeForce Experience (I believe) only works with NVIDIA graphics cards. OBS is a popular alternative. Regardless, if you're using a recording software, usually it will have an option in the program to view the folder where your files are saved. By default, OBS saves to the Videos folder on your computer.

If you're on console, the procedure is completely different again. So in order for us to give you more relevant advice, you'll need to let us know your platform and, if you're on PC, what software you used to record the video ๐Ÿ˜Š

  • No confirmation yet, but personally I would love a Feng Tome. Assuming they're continuing the two-characters-per-Tome pattern, my ideal Tome would probably be Feng, Meg, Huntress and Nurse.

  • Yes, a new Rift (or Battle Pass, if you prefer) will release alongside the new Tome.

  • Doesn't happen to me, but I have a fairly powerful computer. I've heard this is an issue particularly on console, especially on maps like Red Forest with a lot of particle effects that need rendering. I would definitely recommend making a bug report though, because it makes it easier for the devs to find and fix the issue - unless someone else has already reported the same problem, in which case you should just upvote their thread and maybe add a comment sharing your own experience.

  • As others have observed, queue times vary, but if you're getting long killer queues, the simple answer is because more than 20% of the players in your region are playing killer. For ideal matchmaking, you want a 1:4, or 20/80, killer to survivor ratio. Anything more than that, on either side, and you get lengthened queue times, because more people are looking for opponents than there are opponents to match with them.

  • This poll is missing a few options. Although I generally try not to tunnel, when I do, I definitely know I'm doing it, and the reason is because while it may not be the only way to win, sometimes it is the best way to guarantee a win, especially when the survivors are obviously miles ahead of me in skill because matchmaking isn't doing its job.

There's no real way to tunnel without being aware of it (and if there were, none of the people who answered 'no' to this poll would fit into that category because, if they truly don't realise that they tunnel, they wouldn't think the question applied to them in the first place).

Fibijean I have 2,000 blood points so it wouldnโ€™t have been capped, I think.

In that case, I would recommend contacting Support, as they're the ones most likely to be able to sort out the issue for you. You can submit a ticket at this link: https://support.deadbydaylight.com/hc/en-us

  • The fact that you think those on the dev team aren't aware that making appropriate buffs and nerfs on both sides will result in a better experience for everyone seems to suggest that you don't know as much about their ideas and methods as you think you do.

  • @xBEATDOWNSx said:

Trusting the player base to balance things is an awful idea when most have an "us vs them" mentality. You see insane buffs to one side with, at best, nothing done to other.

On top of that, the player base for DBD is small. I'd say less than 250k across ALL platforms. Splitting up the players into different modes wont be a good thing.

Not just the bias, but I think the other issue with entrusting anything balance-related to players is that most players don't know anywhere near as much about game design as they think they do and would likely make a right mess of things.

  • How many bloodpoints did you have prior to purchasing the perks? If you were already at or near the 1 million cap, the game might not allow you to gain points beyond that.

  • The first thing to understand is how map generation works in DBD. Every map is made up of a bunch of 16x16 tiles. Every map has certain tiles that are guaranteed to spawn in the same place every time, which usually make up some kind of main room or building, and there are some tiles (like the shack on outdoor maps) that are a guaranteed spawn, but usually have a couple of possible locations that they could appear. The rest of the tiles are randomly placed, as are things like pallets, which is where the procedural generation comes in. So no, it's impossible to learn a map's exact layout for future use, as it will be randomised to some degree every time.

Loops exist on every map. Larger loops, like jungle gyms, the shack and T/L walls, occupy a single tile, which is what people mean when they talk about "looping generic tiles". As for how you find them, pretty much anything with an open window and/or a pallet can be classified as a loop, because you can run around ("loop") it. Some loops (generally the larger ones mentioned above) are more complicated than others, which is why you find tutorials on the best way to run around them. It's also worth noting that the generic loops like the shack, jungle gyms and T/L walls consistently appear on outdoor maps, but usually not on indoor maps such as Hawkins, Lery's and The Game. Indoor maps tend to have more unique loops and tiles, which is one of the reasons why they're more difficult for survivors to play on.

Except they used the excuse "giving free items" as why the rift was a good thing. They could have literally given them for free, and not charged you to unlock them. So, I'd say that they never planned on selling most of those, and found a way to make even a few dollars off of random cosmetics that we could have been "given", as per the defense of the rift as a "free item producer".

I mean how hard was it to reshade a hag outfit blue realistically.

They did give some things away for free - that's the point of the free track. And yes, they could have given us more stuff for free, but I don't consider it a problem that they didn't. No artist should be obliged to just give their work away, because no matter how easy it was to make, it still took some degree of time and effort, and that's worth something.

Its hard to argue with someone who doesn't understand that this rift was a glorified 50% sale off 2000 auric cells.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1187526#Comment_1187526

    Here is an example:

I sell chickens for 1000$/each. I also sell cows for 50$/each

But if you buy both the chicken and the cow ill give them to you at the special price of 60$.

Its their shop, they price something in a way so that they may make something else seem much more appealing.

I understand that perfectly well, I'm saying there's more to this financially than you seem to think, and it's rather presumptuous for any of us to think we understand BHVR's accounts better than they do.

Fibijean, don't forget all the cosmetics that would've costed you probably 10,000 auric cells to buy all of them individually โ€” now costed you 1,000. ๐Ÿ˜

That's true as well, actually. Good point! Making it too easy to get some of those cosmetics at 'Rift value' costs them money further down the track that people might spend on those outfits once they arrive in the Store.

  • @zimer said:

@Fibijean "Yes, they get the $10 you spent on the auric cells, but they also lose the $10 that you would have spent on whatever you end up spending the return cells on."

    ^This.

A flat basic math: the devs just sold the customer 2000 auric cells for 10$. The customer got 2k auric cells, the devs got 10$.

Not succeeding in making the customer buy, gets the devs 0$.

Its like you want to finish the rift to get 50% off 2000 auric cells, you play/grind for a sale.

And if they sold everyone 2K auric cells for $10, they would lose a lot of money they might otherwise have made. You're assuming that people who don't buy the Rift because they don't expect to finish it won't buy anything else (cosmetics, DLC, etc.) either, which is unlikely to be true. At the end of the day, neither of us actually knows how much money they make or don't make, but I'm confident BHVR's accountants are a lot better informed and probably better trained than a couple of players on the forum.

  • @zimer said:

So you get all your digital/pixels back, nice. But guess what, they got 10 euros (real money) for your digital goods that you can recycle.

They DID get money. And making more people like you think "I get my money back" is a good way to sell a product.

That's why I said they don't "really" make any money off it. Yes, they get the $10 you spent on the auric cells, but they also lose the $10 that you would have spent on whatever you end up spending the return cells on. Say you bought the Rift Pass, finished the Rift and then spent the 1000 extra cells on two DLC characters. Yes, they just got $10 from Rift Pass sales, but they also lost $10 in DLC sales. That's still not a profitable business model.

  • Bear in mind that if you buy the pass and finish the Rift, they don't really get any money because you get all your cells back. They make money off people who buy the pass and don't finish it. So while it may seem like losing customers due to that is a bad thing, I suspect they actually make more money by having the Rift as grindy as it is than they would by making it much easier to complete.

  • @KingFrost said:

Did you count the matches that are required for completing the challenges in your calculations?

Effectively, they did, because they just calculated how many matches it would take to earn the Fragments that the challenges don't give you automatically. Presumably most of those matches would be spent also pursuing the challenges.

That is a point worth noting, though, that the 57 hours calculated above is the total time it would take to get all necessary fragments, not the time you would spend grinding XP on top of the time you already spent doing challenges, as some in this thread have wrongly assumed. I calculated at one point that the Tome would take at least 156 games to complete, if you complete every challenge in the minimum number of games that it is technically possible to complete it in. So theoretically, almost half of the matches needed to finish the Rift would be spent working on challenges, and in practice, it would probably be a much higher proportion.

  • I don't, sorry. I've only ever seen him reacting to other people's footage, but my guess would be that they load the assets into a game engine like Unity or Unreal (probably the latter, since that's what DBD is built on) and explore them in the editor there.

Is that technically the same result? Unless you're just correcting what the actual Timezone is for the time of year we're in, otherwise it should be the same outcome from what I could gather.

Some places in that timezone don't observe daylight saving, so anyone who is still on EST is actually an hour behind Montreal. I thought the distinction was worth making for the sake of those people, so they don't think the Rift ends an hour later than it actually does.

It's 11, but in Montreal, which is currently on daylight saving. So my apologies, it's actually 11AM EDT, not EST as stated above.

It doesn't. Because now the thing you like the most involves interacting with the killer

I still don't agree with your definition, but substitute "interacting with the killer" for "being chased" if you like, because you clearly know that's what I meant (because I explained it to you) and now you're just nitpicking my word choice for something to argue about.

But if you want to be pedantic about it, the actual point I was making was that some people's favourite thing is doing the objective. The fact that one of the things I personally enjoy (I listed more than one) involves "interacting" with the killer, as you define it, still doesn't invalidate that point.

  • Oh, I wasn't sure what that one meant. But there you go, great minds and all that ๐Ÿ˜‰

Also yeah, if it hasn't been reported already, I'd encourage you to make a bug report about that, because like I said, it works on PC so I don't think what's happening for you is intentional.

yes i will try and do that sometime soon if you think it's worth it.

also i would just like to mention when the new theme came out, it wasn't a problem for me, everyting seemed fine, litterally the last few days it has happened

thanks for taking notice and trying to help!

    thank you everyone!

That's odd, although they're constantly updating parts of it so something might have happened there. I don't suppose you updated your OS or browser any time within the last few days?

i believe i'm on windows 8.1, laptop has been in for a repair at least 6 months ago and chrome is Version 80.0.3987.149 (Official Build) (64-bit)

like i said before though, i used to see what you see on your screen, it suddenly changed a few days ago

Yeah, Windows is weird though and something in the code for the new theme could easily not be registering for whatever reason. I would advise you to make a post in the Forum Feedback section (https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/categories/forum-feedback), including that photo as well as the information you've given us like your operating system, browser and browser version. As far as I know there's nothing that you yourself can do about it, except perhaps try using a different browser like Firefox, so your best bet aside from that is to report it and hope it gets fixed.

    i have took photo :)

Thanks for that. I'm not sure what the issue is - my best guess is that it's a Windows 8 issue, since I'm guessing the forums are built with 10 in mind. What version of Chrome are you using? (You can find out by going into your browser and clicking on the Options menu in the top right, then Help > About Google Chrome).

i'm getting frustrated now! i can't take a picture it is not working! on my screen it is the same as your's except i don't se started by or most recent

Another option is to take a photo of your screen with a phone or camera and send it. You don't have to, it would just make it a lot easier for us and potentially the forum designers to figure out what's going on.

  • Get hyped! ๐Ÿ™Œ

What are you stealthing from if you aren't interacting with the killer?

The killer may never see you, but you aren't stealthing if the killer isn't around you

I don't consider it an interaction if one party doesn't even know it's happening, but sure, if you want to argue semantics, hiding from a nearby killer could be defined as an interaction. The point stands regardless.

i'm on windows, i have a button that says PrtSc SysRq, can not find a button without the last bit, i also click this button and nothing happens?

Nothing happens visibly, but if you click that button and then CTRL + V or Right-Click + "Paste" in the comment box or anywhere you would normally be able to paste an image, it should paste the image it just took of your screen.

  • I'll add a few of my own:

    • Ability to search for perks by name, or at least have them properly alphabetically ordered
    • Ability to save custom outfits and loadouts
    • "Equip to all" option when customising charms, so that I don't have to manually equip my favourite three charms to all of my characters individually
  • It's common for survivor players to feel like a killer is too strong when they first get released. Most of the time, it's just a matter of learning how to counter them. I can't give you much advice there, because I haven't learned to counter him very well myself, but I'm sure there are a bunch of tutorials on the subject available online by now.

  • If you're on Windows, you can use the Snipping Tool. I know it's also possible on a Mac, but I'm not sure how it works. Alternately, you can use the Print Screen (or PrtSc) button on the keyboard, which will copy an image of your screen to the clipboard.
