I think most of us are not complaining that SM is getting nerfed, we complaining that she is being nerfed to heavily with the so-called promise she will fix it in the unknown future. It's like you have a decent size crack in the wall but instead of fixing that crack by filling it in the devs are just use a sledgehammer on the wall and then after pulling a hole in the wall they drop the hammer and turn around to tell us "There the crack is gone, and don't worry we will fix the wall eventually, it just may be two years before we do it".

I couldn't have said it better myself, honestly.

I mean sure, talking about the ideal scenario of "what ifs" is fine and all. Unfortunately ######### happens in development. But clearly the SM rework isn't happening as soon as we might want and in that scenario toning her down significantly in the meantime is as good of a call as they can make. Again, they can tweak things before it goes live if they feel the need to, which they probably are planning already. But she is getting nerfed regardless.

And that's why we have community backlash, to ensure things don't get out of hand.

And from BHVR's track record, I've seen them go through with things people despised many times. I'm just saying resources would have been better allocated if they focused on the rework a bit more, considering the community's outlook on SM over the past year.

  • I'm just glad they can't instantly pick up for double the endurance, so it won't be nearly as bad. It means I can still get the pickup and keep an eye out for flashlights before they can.

I don't think she was nerfed to the ground, it's an overreaction.

Being stealthy is abusing a perk?

If we want to talk about unfun play styles, Why are the devs not nerfing Knockout? This is my pet peaves about DBD balancing.

If you truly don't think removing a scan line, forcing drones to always be active, AND cutting down both hindered and haste at the same time isn't nerfed to the ground, you're not paying attention. This isn't an argument about if SM is boring, too easy or whatnot. It's about BHVR's approach to how they're handling the situation.

And yes, distortion when used to stall the game for 20 minutes because survivors refuse to touch gens and hide all game is an abuse of the perk. And I'm getting tired of the whataboutisms and you trying to derail the conversation, because you're acting like everyone who isn't happy about the SM nerf WANTS all the other stuff in the game too and it's getting tiring.

You are welcome to look up what Double Standards means. You are complaining that Skull Merchant is finally nerfed, yet justifying the obliteration of Distortion as fine and dandy. In reality, nerfing distortion is incredibly more impactful as now a huge percentage of killer perks and add-ons have zero counterplay.

    I didn't even say that.

If you've seen me talk about SM before, I've asked personally for nerfs to her hindered or haste. I still believe in fair and reasobable nerfs, however, and distortion WAS fairly nerfed because of what survivors did to abuse it. Same with Dead Hard, Eruption, 3 gens, off the hook downs before basekit BT, and currently hoping for something for the worst of full lobby slugging that can't be abused.

I do NOT condone intentionally nerfing something to the ground just to change it later, that's my personal beef with the SM changes. It's also why I'm still mad about Call of Brine's nerf.

Don't just assume I'm a diehard SM fan.

What is normal gameplay? Just because someone is not conforming to expectations does not mean it is not good. It's true that most survivors can't last longer than 10 seconds before dying. Removing a play style is removing accessibility. Killers have many play styles, which can be abused btw, the double standards are absurd here.

And let's be perfectly clear, using distortion to do gens (objective) and avoid the killer is exactly what the game is basically about. Not everyone wants a frequent aura read and be chased all the time.

Wasn't Dead Hard's nerf based on killer complaining that it was boring? It didn't win games. Skull Merchant does. I don't see a problem with Skull Merchant being nerfed. They can't leave her like it was until a rework.

Normal gameplay is not holding the game hostage for 20 minutes by hiding and avoiding the generators. That's why it's getting nerfed.

And dead hard got nerfed because it guaranteed safety too often.

And why are we bringing up double standards? Did we all suddenly change our minds on every other issue? No.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3799783#Comment_3799783

Despite what survivors think, killers can't get constant aura value even if they run full aura read builds

They don't need to, it's enough to the point where actually avoiding the killer is non-viable as a gameplay aspect.

One fond memory I have is playing on the Black Rose map against a Myers. I was doing the gen on the big steamliner, and had a good view of the area. Every time Myers came over, I would walk away from the gen, out of sight, and because I had Fixated/Self Aware, my action radius was bigger than he expected. Three times, he came up to that gen, kicked it, spent some time looking for me, and then leaving again, until he finally clocked on to the fact that I wasn't as close to the gen as he had expected and caught me.

If he had NTH, I would've lit up like a christmas tree.

And you can forget about using the misdirection perks that were buffed last patch if the killer brings in Predator, as that perk invalidates all of them.

The default state of the game has just shifted away from 'killers need to find survivors' to 'killers know where you are'. Doesn't matter whether it's through NTH, Weave Attunement or some other perk, but the excesses of aura reading being scattered about have made hiding a losing strategy now.

Compare to the old aura reading of BBQ & Chili, which added the strict stipulation that it didn't work on survivors that were close enough, meaning that while it gave the killer an indication of where you -were-, it never showed the killer where you -are-. That distinction is one that got removed with pretty much all the new aura reading perks, which do both. And that, in my book, is powercreep.

Maybe it would've been better if Distortion just enforced the BBQ & Chili rule and only activated if the survivor was within X meters of the killer.

Distortion still saves you from NTH once every chase after this change, so situations like that can still work fine unless the Myers decides to come back before the gen is done because he couldn't find anyone else.

And BBQ still has a range requirement? You can be near the hook and the aura read doesn't work on you. And misdirection is still going to be good because:

    1. Chase doesn't end that abruptly, perks like QnQ and Deception/Head On will still work. Especially since it involves lockers.
    2. Not every killer is going to jump on that perk. Plus it does have a generous cooldown that if you outlast it, you're winning in chase and buying your team time to do gens.
  • @Firellius said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3799770#Comment_3799770

It doesn't force them to assist in the match though. They can still just sit in lockers for most of the game and rat it out that way. That's the problem with the distortion nerf. It doesn't fix the alleged problem, it just axes counterplay to the powercrept aura reading.

And I agree as far as locker hopping is concerned, that should be addressed.

However, it still doesn't fix stealth players who aren't using lockers as well. As long as you're in a TR, you're immune to aura reads. And killer doesn't proc aura as often as people claim. If a killer is burning all your stacks, it's usually from perks like Weave Attunement (which makes distortion useless itself) and Gearhead, which requires actually doing gens.

However, I think aura read creep is being overly complained about. The only perk that can grant basically infinite aura read is WA, which we know is getting changed soon. Survivors also have a ton of aura read perks, I personally run Wiretap+Repressed Alliance to give me a ton of value out of it, or blood amber key+OoO, Alert, Troubleshooter for tons of it and do extremely well. Despite what survivors think, killers can't get constant aura value even if they run full aura read builds, and if they do they lose pressure in gen defense or chase depending on the killer.

I think the consequences of BHVR doing nothing about Skull Merchant or not doing enough to reduce the negativity she brings to the game until her proper rework outweigh the consequences of upsetting her dedicated mains. I also don't think one CM's interpretation of balance/design intentions (especially since they were stated in a lighthearted environment) are wholly indicative of the live team's thought processes, and in fact I think matching the tone of the platform is a sign of a great CM. Though if BHVR feels the need to clarify or make some changes based on the reactions here, I'd understand.

Except we knew they had plans to change her for some time. If they focused on a rework over this, nobody would be as angry other than the diehard anti SM mob, and probably would have been more receptive to feedback.

  • @Firellius said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3799755#Comment_3799755

they already hide in lockers as well.

Then I assume you understand that the Distortion nerf is completely pointless, yes?

I believe the issue was both.

Hiding in lockers, getting stacks in the killer's TR, and leaving to drop/pickup items to avoid crows and move to another locker while distortion kept you hidden.

The Distortion change is healthier this way, forcing survivors to actually assist in a match. If they want to hide in lockers all game, they now have SOME risk other than completely being under the radar.

  • Probably because, unless I lose and get insulted for it in endgame chat, winning as any killer with any set up perks is apparently 'boring.' There's no winning, so why not choose the killer you like to play?

  • @mecca said:

Killers need to be big boys. Killers should not be immune to nerfs. Skull Merchant was totally unfun to verse and was overpowered at the same time.

Distortion was completely obliterated. These things happen on a continual basis for survivor and are conditioned to it.

Skull Merchant is still playable. And if you actually try, I bet you will still win a majority of your matches easily. This is simply because the game favors killer that much.

    That's a horrible excuse, sorry.

Distortion got changed because of survivors not participating in normal gameplay and going full stealth. And before you bring up 'But killer-' I also think the perk Eruption needed changes too because of the unhealthy way it stalled the game before the 3 gen changes.

SM's current iteration is not impossible to face, nor gives her free wins against teams who try against her. SM's only crime is 'boring' and left over complaints about her release state. I can play no drone SM and people still throw on hook at first sight, the stigma is that bad.

It does not excuse nerfs to this degree. BHVR should have focused on the rework over this if it was that big of a problem to them.

  • I also despise some of the community celebrating this.

How do some people not see the problem with doing this? Current SM wasn't busted, no matter how annoyed the community is with her. I even thought she could have some things tuned down myself, but this is too far. And yet, people are acting like this was justified?

All it does is set a dangerous precedent for deciding what gets changes down the line. Just have enough people complain and it will get nuked, not even fine tuned or adjusted, just nuked. Even if it's not broken or overpowered.

I love fogwise. Super underrated perk. Rewards hitting greats which feels good and helps you pre run vs strong chase killers.

I've weened myself off it for awhile on my gen builds, but it goes back on when I run out of wire spools on my toolboxes. Otherwise it's Stake Out/Hyperfocus/Streetwise/Built to Last. Though the times I do run it, I swap Streetwise and BTL with Fogwise and either Sprint Burst or Wiretap, depending on my mood.

  • I hate having an opposing opinion, but I kinda like Lights Out.

Granted I haven't experienced slugging or tunneling, in fact as killer I experienced survivors throwing themselves at me with their 60 second endurance, but as survivor the worst I had was a camping Chucky and the anticamp kicked in. Ended up escaping too.

I dunno, I just like the barebones nature of it.

killers just cried because they couldn't get their infinite wallhacks and now they have it. just incapable to found survivors by themselves without wallhacks. they have around 100 different perks and addons to eat the tokens faster than it regen and it still not enough. this is just sad.

Isn't the only perk that can technically get you 'infinite wallhacks' Weave Attunement? And didn't that just devour stacks anyway?

Heck I can get near infinite aura read on survivor with perks like Fogwise+Stakeout. Or Key+Amber+Additional time addons, Alert, Troubleshooter and Streetwise.

Even trying to think of it, killer gets a few seconds of aura read at a time. And unless a survivor is sitting inside a Weave Attunement spot, the other aura reading perks/addons don't give you infinite wallhacks even with the strongest ones combined, aside WA.

  • To be fair, this information does little to dissuade concerns about the killer's changes.

We've been told the same about Freddy, Myers, Twins, and other killer reworks. The idea that nerfing a killer this hard in preparation for a rework is still not a good idea, even if this killer is hated among the community, and sets a horrible precedent for any killer that could potentially be on the radar. And we aren't even sure if SM will get that rework as soon as they promise it.

Heck, Freddy himself is apparently in the top 10 for killrates when last seen. Imagine if they nerfed him further in preparation for a rework next year.

Jokes aside, it's a worrying trend. If enough people realize that throwing on hook means an eventual nerf, they'll do it, even if it's a small part of the community.

You don't really have another choice as a video game developer. If your customers just outright refuse to engage with content you have to listen to that.

It would have to be a significant part of the community to actually yield this though and given the size of DbD's community not realistic to fake.

Not when the end result is kneecapping something so hard it goes into a messy state like this. There's a fine line between fixing something the community hates and ruining it further for everyone involved.

They were better off not touching her until their planned rework.

  • Hot take but I'm having fun on both sides.

Just got a 4k as Tier 1 only Myers, and escaped with one other against a Chucky prior.

  • Hopefully it doesn't work the way I think it does, because Corrective/StakeOut/Hyperfocus on 2 people is going to absolutely tear through gens.

  • @FrenchBagels said:

If this was true, they would’ve brought back Overheat Billy, Revert Knight Guard cancelling, and not keep the buffs to Singu, Nemesis, and Huntress. Freddy was nerfed because Forever Freddy was genuinely a problem and people keep forgetting about that. I agree he should’ve had something done to him years ago but they’ve only now started embracing larger scale mid chapters for some reason.

tldr: based sm nerf, Billy will still be a gigachad, and no one on bhvr is intentionally looking at a Killer like Wesker and contemplating 100 ways to gut them

The problem is a lot of people like Billy, Nemesis and Huntress to counteract all that. Hell, Knight may end up getting gutted again due to people hating him too eventually, if people start throwing on hook at the same rate SM gets.

In SM's case, people are still going to DC/throw on hook even after these changes for awhile just because it's SM and they figure it's justified even if SM gets gutted. I guarantee it.

Simple fix: Survivors with endurance from OTR, BT, and basekit also receive no collision with the killer for the duration.

This would make bodyblocking with it nearly impossible. There is no downside unless you are trying to bodyblock the unhooked survivor to wait out BT.

No collision would fix a lot of it, I agree.

  • You're also forgetting survivors have a lot of aura read perks as well, with even more becoming stronger next patch.

  • We're also forgetting it doesn't fix what people hated about it, being in combination with Pain Res and Grim Embrace.

  • You really think killers are running every single form of aura read?

    Without gen regression?

in general hag has been a hated killer since her inception so that doesn’t really surprise me

Has she? Maybe it's because I joined when Sadako released, but I see hag as… Kind of existing? Especially after the removal of lightburning her traps to just wiping them.

  • It has for me.

I can't speak for everyone, but once part of a addon becomes basekit, I move onto other addons. Knight for example, I'm enjoying his Iri Knights Contract instead of increasing the patrol radius and I still get value.

  • Sweats in Sadako main

Jokes aside, it's a worrying trend. If enough people realize that throwing on hook means an eventual nerf, they'll do it, even if it's a small part of the community.

Heck, I've had people do the exact thing people do against SM (pointing at hooks, giving up, throwing on first hook) when playing as Hag, who I barely play.

  • I've won most of my matches as Dracula so far. Wolf form is great for sneaking up on people, funnily enough.

That said, SWF will have the advantage no matter what.

  • I'm pretty sure it's once per gen, because if it's not, it will be one of the worst perks to go against with SWF comms.

  • I hate that I now consider this the better alternative, as someone who hates having content removed from games.

I hope they'll read all the feedback and fix all these issues, though. But I can't hold my breath.

  • I think the drones should have a place, but in a total rework, function differently.

I wish the drones had the Biopod functions, honestly. Placable cameras, full 360 rotation, be able to look up and down enough, and lock-on applies the tracker for her GPS while giving the survivor a few debuffs, like reduced TR or even have addons revolve around giving debuffs.

But I doubt that will happen now.

The playstyle I saw people complaining about the most and the most valid imo complaint about her was the 'follow to loop, press M2, and leave' style. Making lock on stacks decay or go away basically makes it so that would be the only playstyle for her as keeping them around as traps would be a detriment more than anything at that point especially without haste.

Well, they still kinda did this regardless now that scan lines got nerfed and stealth mode basically got removed. So no worries about lock-on stack removal ruining them.

  • @KaTo1337 said:

    Horrible.

ANOTHER FREDDY-NERF (Dead Mans Switch no longer triggers when you fake a teleport at a generator for a 2nd, 3rd or 4th time). So its basically a perk for every random killer, not for a unique killer design.

Pretty much kills it on my Sadako build too. And it makes it even stronger with Pain Res, which I thought they didn't want?

  • The timing of this post is quite odd.

  • @HamsterEnjoyer said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3797207#Comment_3797207

If you add the ability to remove lock on stacks that just makes the worst way to play against her the ONLY viable way to play against her. Removing lock on stacks means shes just gonna spam drop drone at every loop and try to force a scan line in chase which is only even a viable strategy if the survivor has 2 scans already. They needed to make her trap setup more lethal not make it useless

Problem is when the traps are more lethal than they are currently, it becomes unfun on survivor side to deal with. Especially since you can't remove lock-on stacks. And it didn't have to be disabling drones, they could have had them decay over a reasonable amount of time or something.

Whatever they're planning with this change, however, doesn't make this point matter now. As well put by this next response:

    @VomitMommy said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3797207#Comment_3797207

There is also not really way of gaining stacks, so why worry about removing...

The scan line changes pretty much kill her drones as is. Less useful in loops, and far more useless as traps considering how they literally tell you where they are without stealth mode. And even with stealth, I could see the pattern they leave on the floor with the current SM. That's what really upsets me the most.

  • I think I could have lived with the removal of haste, for sure.

However, the scan line change makes no sense. And we still have no way to remove lock on stacks.

  • I'm not a huge fan of the DMS change, since I enjoyed the fact it could block multiple gens for a short time as opposed to now being better with Pain Res. I also fear that Quick Gambit is going to make gen speeds worse to deal with since it's now global.

Otherwise, the other perk changes are interesting on both sides. I like that the teamwork perks got a facelift.

i don't use pop on any killer that isn't just super sonic speed like Blight or Xenomorph. time sink to kick gens is too high for most killers.

And this is a pretty good example of why hooks should have been the metric for how a match goes over kills. The idea that getting a bunch of hooks, regardless of not killing, meaning you lose makes no sense. So I do agree with that, somewhat.

It does make sense. as strange as it sounds, the current version of dbd uses tunnel as skill-metric to how well you play killer. There should be more rewards for spreading hooks but there isn't which is why we have so much tunneling and not enough chase-me survivor fun. BVHR is working on anti-tunnel and anti-proxy camp mechanics and hopefully working on some spread-hook incentives for killer which they have some… in the form of perks like pain res, grim embrace, gift of pain, hex:plaything etc. The unfortunate part is that i wish didn't to equip killer perks to gain said benefit.

Pop's pretty decent on any killer with mobile abilities. Sadako, Dredge, Unknown, Dracula, even got good value from Spirit when I tried it on her.

I am personally glad that spreading hooks is something stronger perks incentivize, but I do agree something in the base game needs to be added to further incentivize it away from tunneling.

  • @nam said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3796359#Comment_3796359

No, as Pop and PainRes get nerfed hard, normal walking killers are not able to hook someone and then kick the gen fast, unless ur have transport ability, but even that hooking still wastes you 10+ sec which is half a gen totally, in the match to high-rank survs, hooking is actually wasting killer's time. If you can't tunnel, you hooks 6-7 times but not killed anyone, then you are just sending free wins. Why you people just cant accept something new and right?

Pain res doesn't require you to kick the gen post hook. You can make that argument with Pop, but not pain res.

And this is a pretty good example of why hooks should have been the metric for how a match goes over kills. The idea that getting a bunch of hooks, regardless of not killing, meaning you lose makes no sense. So I do agree with that, somewhat.

  • It's not. You can still get value from hooks, especially with perks like Pop and Pain Res. As for being unable to tunnel, I see that as a good thing as long as it effects the worse of tunneling and not when trying to get someone out in late game.

Unless they start stacking even more buffs on survivors for getting hooked, you'll be fine getting hooks.

what happen if you see entire team use these perks? you could try testing the waters like you do with decisive strike where you purpose risk decisive strikes. In the end, you'll just get punished. Maybe some killer will like try force it by running like knock out and shattered hope but i am not sure at the effectiveness.

The day I see shattered hope become meta due to this is the day I consider taking a long break, lmao.

  • @Devil_hit11 said:

if every survivor team is running Boon:Exponential, Unbreakable, Soulguard and Tenacity. you won't really get any value out of slugging. you just get survivor speed-crawling to boons and picking themselves up with self-endurance. So survivor can forced you to hook in which you face these other…. negatives of no proxy camping and no tunneling.

The value would be the eventual bleedout, as opposed to facing constant bodyblocks against teams willing to abuse it.

Even if they have all of that, if hooking gets bad enough most killers will still risk a survivor or two not running those perks as opposed to every anti-tunnel perk on top of basekit additions. And if anti-slug becomes meta, it still becomes better to slug a few THEN hook in this scenario.

I already get matches where killers will mass-slug if a hook is sabotaged or someone bodyblocks as is.

  • @Devil_hit11 said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3796106#Comment_3796106

you have to consider that if this was implemented in the base-kit mode and killer start slugging, than survivor will just start equiping every anti-slug perk possible because suddenly, those slugging perk now become consistent value perks instead of rare value perks.

We already have survivors getting value from UB. The problem is killers will have to choose slugging more often than hooking if it gets to the point where hooking is a detriment.

And down the line, I guarantee it will spawn complaints about slugging to the point where UB becomes basekit in some form, and then once we have all that, SWF can abuse the mechanics far more efficiently than the regular folk.

Maybe it's me overthinking it, but I've also been playing this long enough to have experienced it first hand, back-to-back matches of survivors and killers abusing any introduced mechanic. I do hope I'm wrong, more ways for SoloQ to be viable is great, but not with the problems I think will happen.

  • Just because they already did it, does not mean it's a good idea to do it again.

You have to take into account both the upsides and downsides and weigh them against each other. If you make it where killers are punished for spreading hooks by allowing survivors to all ignore their objectives to prevent the killer from taking chase with others, we'll see more slugging to counter it. Then we see slugging nerfed with basekit UB and then things will get even worse.

Maybe it will be fine for low MMR/casual matches, but once you hit a certain MMR all your killer games will be filled with survivors trying that. Even now with OTR/DS I get survivors willing to throw entire matches to try and get value.

  • @Devil_hit11 said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3796066#Comment_3796066

i think it will show up in base game. BVHR is testing different type of methods of anti-tunneling and anti-camping to find out which method is best form of nerfing proxy camping and tunneling. the 2vs8 was more artificial type change. make cage more hidden, make it harder to tunnel, and so on. this one is bvhr using more brute force measures. Your going to be punished for proxy camping and tunneling people off the hook.

In my opinion, your likely just going to see a lot of slugging because the killer is like actively being punished hooking and is getting like 0 benefits from hooking. As a result, you might just killer bleed out slug people because…. well killer has to find a way to win right? The killer ain't dumb. I suppose we'll just have to see how it plays out.

That's what I worry about the most.

yes it does. it puts their power on cooldown and 10% haste is severe penalty for all killers nearly. maybe nurse gets a little less effected by change but you have to remember light out also dim vision which is very important for nurse's blinks, so juking is much easier. so even tunneling as nurse might be a poor idea.

If you think it about closely, it is possible the most survivor sided event possible. you will never have harder time playing killer than this event. 0 game-delay perks, top-tier killer don't work, anti-proxy camping and anti-tunneling mechanics forcing you to go for chases and requiring you to win with skill. The only thing they're missing in this event is base-kit unbreakable so they can also delete slugging as strategy. Your better be putting on your A-game as killer. You'll need it.

Again, that's why I think it works for lights out. I don't disagree on that.

I'm talking about OP saying it should come to base game.

i don't really mind if they're weaponized. just give me 8 stack of stbfl and rapid brutality. I'll hit borrow time and just gain speed.

They made free BT with haste buffs so OTR would be fine

I think the bigger issue is all it accomplishes is making lower tier killers worse.

Remember, endurance off hook doesn't really help against killers with mobility as is.

And to reiterate, I'm talking about if this comes to base game. I do think it can work with Lights Out.
