I think that's already been answered by others in this thread - whilst the feedback we receive from all sources is valuable and used, and considered. Our team has to make decisions based on that feedback as a whole - and consider the game as a whole, not just one side or the other.
And whilst you say 8 out of 10 cases the feedback given and the solution presented doesn't overlap, you're not considering the feedback from other sources, just what's presented in one area. We are trying to explain why a lot of the decisions made, bearing in mind the full picture of what is coming ahead as well, which of course we cannot explain.
"I'll address this part directly about not listening to players. We really do listen to players, not just the loudly vocal minority"
Coming from the woman who admitted to the fact they nerfed skull merchant just because she was complained about and that they intentionally did so with the intention to make her as unplayable as possible then laughed in a youtubers live stream about it -

I agree - they make a temporary solution and people still complain. Also - A lot of us were okay with having a couple of bots to make queues faster. Maybe not the majority here on the forums - but on other social media platforms people are actually happy about it.
This is a lie Ive seen nothing but hate for it what

I have imagine heels just don’t work with the current survivor rigs, they would have to change the running animation.
I can name like 3 games off the top of my head that have high heels that do not change the rig or skeletons of the models why would DBD be different?

Also why did her actual 'High heels' get a chunky heel but her thigh high gogo boots get a weird unfinished stiletto?

I think it's better they tried something new and unique. Survivors have so many cosmetics to choose from so it's really not that big of a deal IMO.
So because we have a few good cosmetics (Mind you Jeff and Yun-Jin are in this) it means we shouldn't want better quality cosmetics?

But I'm the kind of person who refuses to buy cosmetics, so anything free is good. :)

Further more, will we see updates on any of the low quality cosmetics? After Junji Ito's reaction to the survivor cosmetics I think that should be a wakeup call..Can you help me understand what you mean? I went searching for his reaction, but I found marketing material where it looks like BHVR sat Junji Ito down and had him play a few matches for content. The closest I've found to a complaint is that he considered the clothes "flashy" for a game about hiding from the killer. Did he walk back what he said on camera after the video was filmed?
I am not allowed to link to Reddit on the forums, but on R/Junjito there is a post called Junji Ito reacts to and plays the new skins made with Dead by Daylight that has the video I am talking about.
Just his overall reaction looking at the survivors, especially Yun-Jin's, compared to the killers he seemed greatly disappointed. It was pointed out a lot on social media because it was just like laughably bad

This, this, this.
I'll also add that SM had three major indicators that somethibg was wrong:
- Killers said she felt weak.
- Devs posted stats saying that even ignoring games with disconnects and deaths on first hook (giving up) her kill rate was still a statistical outlier.
- Survivors saying she was awful to go against.
All of these together mean that the only real option for her is another rework. That's the only way to address all 3 at once.
Typically it feels like these posts are offended that she wasn't simply buffed, which would've only made two of the three main issues worse.
The devs decided a "break glass" solution was necessary in the meantime until they could rework her, which they handled poorly imo. But at least they have a plan to rework her this year.
They're never going to rework her lol they're just lying and going to keep her at the bottom for the rest of time because again it was a meme to hate her so much so it inflated kill rates.
Deaths on first hook didn't count but any death followed after did same with disconnects. If a survivor disconnected but the rest stayed and died then her kill rate was inflated 3x instead of 4. This has already been explained. -
@Xernoton said:
No. That's not the case. The reason why Skull Merchant was nerfed was because she had some very fundamental issues, that would take another rework to fix. You put a drone in a loop and now that survivor was screwed no matter what they did. That is extremely unfun and demoralising to play against. Factor in that many still hated her from her 3-gen days and you got yourself a very understandable reason why people hate the character. It's not just her mechanics but pretty much everything about her.
With the press of a button you suddenly got information, haste, a way to injure survivors remotely, hindered and undetectable. All of this could be activated with a single press of a button and there wasn't really anything much you could do against that. Especially not in chase.
The devs knew that they couldn't fix her issues immediately, so they decided to nuke instead her and sweep her issues under the rug. That wasn't a good solution (especially considering that some other killers at the time were higher priorities when they were fine) but it is the solution they went with. Skull Merchant will get another rework at some point but unless they change the foundation on which she is built on, people will still hate her.
Clown
Trapper
Hag
Do the literal exact same thing. Throw something down at a loop and it becomes unusable yet its only a problem when she does it lol. And if a survivor is being injured without being in a chase with skull merchant thats a fault on the survivors end. Her drones were extremely easy to dodge outside of chase so to try and say 'remote injures' made her OP then thats like saying Trapper's downing add on and Trapper in general is OP because of his 'remote injuries' with no effort on his end. -
@sizzlingmario4 said:
Because even though Freddy has a lot going on, all of his abilities have fair counterplay. Staying awake helps negate parts of his power, you can dodge dream snares (and even if you don't, they don't necessarily lead to a hit either), you can avoid fake pallets. You can completely negate his healing teleport by waking up and not healing in the dream world.
Skull Merchant wasn't like that. Her stealth was never an issue, but for how easy it was to drop a drone at a loop and get haste + injuries + Broken status + potentially deep wound + a massive Hindered effect after that, combined was far too much for how easy it is to use her drones and how little effort was required to play her. It's not fun to play survivor against a killer power that requires basically no thought or effort from the killer and/or where the power (in this case the drones) do most of the heavy lifting for them, and especially with SM's drones creating as many lose-lose situations as they do. It's not solely about how many things a killer can do, it's also about the overall strength of those abilities combined and what options survivors have to play against them.
Btw, the whole assumption regarding the dislike for SM mostly being tied to her 3-gen Merchant days is not true. Her rework was also horrible to play against and she would not have been complained about post-rework nearly as much as she was if she wasn't still a problem. At least for me personally, I no longer care about old 3 gen Merchant at all, that's over and done with, it doesn't matter anymore because it's no longer in the game. It's not fair to judge the current state of a killer based on old abilities they no longer possess, but it is perfectly fair to judge them on their current power, and her current power is very unfun to face albeit for different reasons than her original version (and was very obnoxious until she was nerfed).
Freddy hitting his snares and getting massive slowdown is easier than SM's. The speed difference between SM's haste/hinder and one of clowns bottles requires SM to have 2 people being actively scanned at once while clown gets it with an M2 so wheres the effort required for him or is that only reserved for Skull Merchant who only got those benefits from her playing well and survivors making mistakes which is the part everyone likes to conveniently leave out.
She was never problem, like many others, you never learned her or her counters and just hated her because its a meme to hate her and come up with any excuse under the sun to justify/continue it. Every complaint she has other killers have a more powerful version of which is why I say it was a meme to hate her and just that. -

How do you know people did not give her a chance? I assume you are working at BHVR and you have all data? Because if you don't, then you have no idea what happened against her.
People most likely gave her chance but there was not good counter for her power. It was also insanely boring to play against her. Her power was rewarding her way too much for how braindeadly easy she was. So they most likely decided it's not worth it to play against her.
If one survivor do that, it's fine. But when your majority of survivor players do that, then yeah there is problem. BHVR can't ignore things like that. When they add something new to game, it need to be fun for both sides. And SM obviously was not good design for survivors.
Literally day one of her rework people were saying how OP she was and how she had the same problems as before, neither of which were true in the slightest. People were PETRIFIED of drones outside of chase for some reason and even up until her extreme gutting as well as a little after people complained about her 3 genning which is proof no one tried to actually face her they just deemed her broken and OP and thusly never stopped complaining.

That's not true at all.
Her rework was also miserable to face. She got so much power for no skill. You can blame survivors as much as you want but nothing will change.
Survivors did not like her and BHVR had to take action. Simple. And BHVR gave her enough time maybe survivors will adept and stop give up but it did not happen anyway.
Her rework was perfectly fine the problem is no one ever gave her the chance. She was extremely balanced in her reworked state in all honesty nothing made her OP or broken and with a basic understanding of her kit a survivor could hold a good chase with her. Hating her is and always will be a meme. Im confident even when she's reworked there will be plethoras of people complaining saying shes OP and three genning them no matter what her power is

Junji Ito has hated China since he did a crossover with Identity V and Netease said the skin was too graphic to keep a 12 and under rating. So out of retaliation since then he hasn't allowed game licenses to go to China. Not kidding btw this really is the reason lol

The hypothetical is ridiculous because it hasn't ever happened before. There is no basis for a mass case of a "meme" getting out of hand and causing a Killer to be gutted.
Also, as for your CC comment, maybe Hens or Ayrun could influence a sizable portion of the NA and Europe playerbase, MAYBE. Asian players play an entirely different game and I know DBD has a huge Spanish-speaking community as well. At MOST, Hens and Ayrun could maybe convince 20% of that playerbase to do something. How in the hell could they make all Survivor players throw for a "meme"
I hate to break it to you, but Artist is already disliked and has been since she released. She's another, "Place power at loop, Survivor must leave loop or die" Killer. The reason the hatred isn't as strong is two-fold. For one, she wasn't used to hold people hostage. For two, even if she plays in that "boring" way of placing a Bird at a loop immediately, the Survivor DOES still get to interact with the Killer. When SM was used in her "boring" way, there wasn't any interaction, there was tedium.
Well it DID happen thats why Skull Merchant was gutted. Hating her was a meme and solely a meme, there was no basis to 90% of hte complaints because the complaints were all left over from her first introduction. The meme to hate her began before her PTB even did with people trashing her design then trashing her all over the PTB then trashing her on launch when 'chess merchant' became a thing. She was a meme to hate during her entire conception.

The nurse thing can be tossed from the conversation entirely. That was killswitching bugged content. That's WAY different than what we're talking about.
Your twins example is basically going AGAINST your point. If BHVR had a pattern of speedy turnaround for their "fixes" they'd have earned more patience and goodwill with the community to these things. They don't though... Their track record is terrible.
As for the Legion example... Please point out a patch that was anywhere NEAR what happened with SM. I'm use to seeing a nerf here or there, SM got an execution. Legit though, I wanna see what patch you're referring to that nerfed Legion.
Well I think Pulsar is agreeing they don't have a speedy record and saying it would acceptable if they did (but they don't)

They weren't, my friend. The games were perfectly fine, even better than matches against most of the killer roster, I would say.
There was a middle ground, an acceptable state, and it got destroyed because the petty DCs did not stop. It is the problem of players refusing to adapt, friend, just like Freddy. Same results, different killers.
I honestly believe all of her recent nerfs should be reverted, the rework scrapped, and players should be explicitly told to learn how to play against the character. To not DC, to stick around and get used to the drones. Nobody ever improves in DBD if all they do is disconnect.
Right? Both Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Identity V both have video tutorials on how new characters work accessible in game so you can see all their abilities and such why doesn't DBD? It feels like something that should've been added years ago with how large our roster is now.

That was so annoying especially with power overhaul.
See I actually thought that they only did that to Skully because of community outrage and that they knew it was a bad idea but they didn't wanna waste time on her so they wouldn't do it again. I didn't expect them to not only do it again, but not even within 3 months of doing it the first time and especially not to something that NO ONE complained about😭

This post is so laughable and dramatic grab me a violin. I'm sure OP doesn't feel the same when anything on Survivor side gets nerfed.
Well I do but when in recent times has something that was on the survivor side been nerfed so badly its completely unusable with the intention of it being horrible and unusable? The SM nerf only happened in October so its not like we've had a huge amount of time for a survivor perk to come out and be nerfed with the intention of making it so bad its useless. The reason I bring up knotted rope is its the first thing since SM that I can see where the devs flat out admit "Hey we nerfed this really horribly that way no one uses it and we'll check back on it in a year to see if we wanna change it to be useful again" just like they did with SM where they admitted they only nerfed her so people wouldn't play her and they could just wait until who knows when to look into her again.

The fact that you have to disable the Drones to work on gens. It's not like you can just crouch away when SM shows up. That Drone needs to be gone or you're gonna get scanned when she comes back.
The fact that Drones made any and all gen regression stronger due to their mandatory time sink to do gens.
The fact that Drones could just be instantly replaced when patrolling with zero cooldown.
The fact that it's all a lot of players would do, simply because they could. Even in scenario's where they could win by killing Survivors, they'd choose to just keep stalling.
Who'd be better?
Hag? Not likely.
Plague? Maybe? Puke doesn't really do anything once your injured, unlike SM's Haste + Hindered. It also doesn't create AoE denials.
Singu? Again, maybe? His BioPods get disabled easy though, but being Slipstreamed is more impactful than being Infected against Plague.
You can just ignore the drones entirely. When she comes you can just eat the scan, she has to do this three times in order for it to have any effect and since she has 0 ability to catch up shes kinda screwed. Then in 45 seconds she again has to chase you off 3 times in order to just get one claw trap back (assuming you even get hit by a scan every time she shows up). In any scenario where old skull merchant would've been effective at 3 genning so would Blight, Doctor, Clown, Nurse, Billy, Chucky, even Wesker. Her drones were incredibly non lethal when used in this manner and its why SMs who tried to do this post her rework pretty much always were curb stomped with ease. It didn't actually prevent gen rushing nor did it prevent gens from being done and even if you constantly commit and need to chase people off and make it your entire goal to never let anyone touch a gen, she's outclassed by killers who can move between generators quicker and secure an injure every time they do.
I mean hell clown could just throw a pink bottle at a gen and then if a survivor comes in contact the speed difference is greater than that of a skull merchant hinder + haste. -

"You are wrong because I said so, she was simply not doing that despite evidence to the contrary."
Don't see much point in continuing this then.
Genuinely asking how was she the best 3 gen killer after her rework and what about her power allowed her to extend the game far beyond any other killers ability to do so?
-

Now who's being dramatic lol
You can still play her, unlike Nurse when she was getting fixed. She was killswitched.
She was despised, still is and that's half on BHVR and half on her players. It's on BHVR because they managed to design the most unpleasant Killer imaginable and it's on the players because they abused the hell out of it.
Nurse was killswitched because the bug actually made the game completely unplayable for her not because she was OP if I recall correctly. SM was essentially killswitched into an M1 killer simply because people didn't want to learn her power and didn't realize every complaint about her was just invalidated back when they reworked her the first time.

No, they said "We need time to properly fix this given its interaction with some perks, instead of making games unplayable for survivors we've temporarily nerfed the add on"
I swear you're all such crybabies who have no idea how hard it is to balance a game with hundreds of perk and add on interactions.
Literally no one was complaining about this nor was it broken in any capacity. I literally built builds around this add on and the best it did was make it so survivors in dead zones would be easily taken out while making little difference depending on the map greatly. It was actually a pretty balanced add on all things considered and was a good example of a yellow rarity add on. The best you could make of this add on was STBFL and this add on which even at max STBFL tokens only gave a 42% cooldown reduction to attack speed which old STBFL which we had for years gave a 40% on max stacks. So can you explain how this add on was so op it needed to be nerfed into the ground and left to rot until some unknown time next year? Can you explain where it made the game unplayable for survivors?

@ThatRyanB said:
Hopping in to provide a little context on this, the team has been closely monitoring The Houndmaster's performance and determined that Knotted Rope posed a potential balancing risk when paired with certain perks and addons. They're currently re-evaluating this addon and plan to revisit it in 2025, but ultimately wanted to ensure that heading into the holidays, the risk of an over-tuned combo was minimized.
We know larger balancing changes like this can be frustrating, but we appreciate your patience as at the end of the day, we want to ensure there's a solid balance between having fun as the Killer and playing against the Killer.Oh so you guys basically said "Well this add on could be problematic (but wasn't so just in case) so we made it completely useless while we wait until 2025 to look at it again." So you guys skull merchant'd it? So thats the new strategy going forward? Nice to know

@GeneralV said:
Hello friend! Good to see you here!
what do you think was done right or wrong? why do you believe so?
Well, 2024 was quite the year for DBD. Overall I'd say the experience was mostly positive, but with a few exceptions here and there.
I really liked the idea of the modifiers changing the game as we know it, despite my dissatisfaction with Freddy being excluded from Lights Out twice. Generally speaking the chapters and the content we got were pretty good. Doomed Course is a bit mid, but All Things Wicked and Castlevania really took the spotlight, those chapters were amazing.
The events were also pretty good, except for the anniversary. Blood Moon had probably the best visuals of any event, and Haunted by Daylight was the most fun I've had with DBD since the days of the Old DBD, and that says something.
The balance is where things begin to get a little bit worse, with one decision in particular: Skull Merchant's nerfs.
Quite possibly one of the worst, most unnecessary changes I've seen since I first started playing DBD, all the way back in 2018. Her previous iteration was fine the way she was, this execution was not needed and it reward players who refused to learn how to play against a character who wasn't problematic in the first place. It is very similar to what happened to Freddy one week after his release in 2017, and something that I strongly believe shouldn't have happened.
has your playtime increased or decreased throughout the year?
Increased.
Shadow of the Erdtree took a bit of my time, yes, but overall I played a lot of DBD this year. Didn't take any extended breaks from the game, and I do not regret it.
how do you perceive the developers' areas of focus on the game? are you satisfied with BHVR's performance (in the context of the game, or the company itself)? how could they improve their relationship with you as a player?
This one is a bit hard to answer right now because of the upcoming Freddy rework, which is something that means A LOT to me.
What will happen next January will most likely have a very big impact on my opinion regarding BHVR and their approach towards DBD.
The fact that we have confirmation Freddy won't get his old power back is already a bit concerning, but we still have to wait and see what is really going to happen.
what is your current experience at your current skill level?
Not terrible, but the tunneling and unnecessary slugging has been a bit too much as survivor. As killer, I don't think there is much being stacked against the killer role right now. Not saying that I win all of my games, because I don't, but there isn't anything in particular that I would describe as the culprit behind my defeats.
All things considered, I'm excited for 2025 DBD.
What you said about Skull Merchant was spot on. Its why I've heavily moved away from DBD and really hate playing now a days. I dont even have a killer I enjoy anymore lol
-
I love how now suddenly we're pretending the PTB matters and hasn't just been a way to advertise content. Anyways these changes for Houndmaster aren't even bad nor do they make her super strong. Even with perfection houndmaster would never be S tier these just make good Houndmaster's in B tier instead of D tier at best.

The perk was massively overbuffed without ever testing it on the PTB to see what its effect would be. Had they put it on the PTB they could have gotten feedback and pushed it live in a healthier state. They didn’t do that so it’s needed to be reverted. Just because you liked a broken perk because it benefited you doesn’t mean you deserve “compensation” when they fix their errors.
I literally haven't even used it since it got buffed but I dont understand your logic here at all. So because it got overbuffed that means we need to never let it be strong again and it deserves to be F tier as punishment or something? Yes there SHOULD be compensation because putting a perk back into the trash pile is a horrid idea.

TOTH only hurts hexes more. You have 4 survivors in a game and if even just one survivor comes prepared with Counterforce and/or Small Game and/or a map because theyre expecting TOTH, then imagine how that goes down for the killer who just has Ruin. It will make hexes not worth running at all unless they are paired with TOTH.
Most players agree that hexes can be taken out of a game way too fast. Reverting TOTH doesn't mean that's it, that the devs are washing their hands at trying to address this. It simply means TOTH wasn't the correct way to address this (and frankly should have been tested in PTB before going live).
"Reverting TOTH doesn't mean that's it, that the devs are washing their hands at trying to address this" except it kinda does. BHVR HATES making secondary changes once something didn't work out. This WAS their way of trying to address it, it didn't work, so they're done and will simply move onto something else.
Twins and Freddy took years to address and it was simply small number tweaks for Twins that didn't address any of their issues really and they're just leaving them at that. They dont like giving third chances to things and extremely rarely do so they tried once to fix the totems, the problem still exists, they'll just do something else. -
Everyone saying "WHY DOES IT NEED COMPENSATION?!?!?!!?" Probably because nerfing a perk back into F tier from S tier just creates another useless perk that will never be touched and is a waste of a slot. Sorry but I think if they revert it they shouldn't make it a totem, its just not worth a slot otherwise.

huh? The ptb literally means public TEST beta so they can test changes coming to live. Almost every recent ptb’s have had changes after them to adress things that can’t make it to live. Imagine if there wasn’t a ptb and we had to deal with reworked twins coming to live or reworked zanshin or Phead torment on m2. There would be so many unhealthy/broken characters, perks, addons, etc that would make it to live if there wasn’t a ptb to test it first.
Yeah but they get the changes out in a week or less its why the PTB really doesn't change much and is just for marketing. The changes they typically make aren't even that big.

Yeah VERY weird they're pricing this in any way. Should just give everyone who owns it 4500 shards for having it at all then take it out of the store :/

I fully agree. Pushing changes to live without testing them in the ptb first is just odd. Why do we even have a ptb in that case?
The PTB exists as marketing for new chapters its not actually meant for testing

Well I know I never want it leaving, its some of the only fun I've had with this game in a WHILE and made me return from my hiatus.
Also you keep saying what you think should happen "I don't like 2v8 so I want it gone" and yet isn't there someone you FORGOT to ask? -

Striving for graphic fidelity is the primary way to make your game look dated in only a couple years’ time.
The Entity creates its environments from the memories of the people it takes. It doesn’t necessarily understand what it’s actually creating, though. It doesn’t need to.
Additionally, it’s specifically attracted to locations where tragedy occurs. These create so-called “Overlaps”, places where the barrier between the Entity and our own world is at its weakest. It stands to reason that this only occurs in human-dominated spaces, since we’re the only ones capable of comitting true atrocities, and have strong emotional reactions to them."Striving for graphic fidelity is the primary way to make your game look dated in only a couple years’ time." That has nothing to do with level design. You can make a believable worldspace and coherent balanced map without it being extremely graphically fantastic.

This isn't "situational slugging", this is the latest "lazy killer" strategy of just doing one thing in every situation no matter what.
It used to be camping and tunneling, until someone realized they could do even less and just never pick up survivors at all.
It's an "always slug, all the time", which requires no situational awareness, game sense, or nuance. It's the latest "slam your face on the keyboard" for low effort games, with the added bonus of usually pissing off your opponent because you're basically BM'ing all the time.
If you lose to slugging EVERYTIME and the killer has to put in that little effort that is an issue on your end not the games balance.

Well, for years I wanted Freddy to get his old power back. It was the very reason why I joined the Forums in the first place and it broke my heart when I learned it was not going to happen.
Now… I am not sure what they will do to my favorite killer this time.
Wait I thought you were a hag main when you first joined

Here again - lowest Killrate is the only thing, because with Nurse, Killrate SUDDENLY matters. But not with every other Killer.
Her difficulty is also really overrated. Sure, you feel like the dumbest person on earth when trying her out for the first time, but it only takes a few hours to play her well enough to win the majority of the games. And if you reach that point the only question is how much you want to limit yourself to make the game remotely interesting and not completely one-sided. (e.g. how many Slowdown-Perks do you pick on her, do you use Add Ons, are you slugging a lot, tunneling, stuff like that)
Im sorry this is very much a lie and is often something just said to make nurse seem worse than she is. There's a reason most nurses can't get beyond a 1k and nobody plays her despite her power level and its her skill requirement. When theres a killer who requires less skill but can get similar results that killer become used very quickly and very often (Spirit is a good example of this, was kind of difficult but not to Nurse's level and produced similar results). If Nurse was much easier you'd see her a LOT more and her kill rate wouldn't be where its at.

I know you can by non-licensed characters for 9,000 shards, but can you right on the day of release? Or do they make it auric cells only for a bit first? I've either bought them with auric cells because I didn't have enough shards (so never even thought to look if you could buy them with shards on release), or bought them with shards well after they've come out.
All I can find on the topic is that you can for 9,000 but not specifically if you can when brand new.Yes even when brand new <3

Not many do the sneaky Hamster better than piggy! She’s the only Ham in DBD!
@Nun_So_Vile @JPLongstreet @radiantHero23
She’ll scutter around the map, bite when she wants and will play with traps :)
And she likes a good stroke and boop of course!
👉🐽
🐷🐹✨
Made me realize they should go back and add an animation for her messing with her trap in lobby that'd be gangster
