Rank 17-20 basically only tries to match with other 17-20s and therefore the wait up there can be EXTREMELY long and tedious.. and the same time, you cannot get out of it unless you get games.

This is (no longer?) correct. Ranks 20-17 get matched without restrictions:

"New players between rank 16 and rank 20 receive an exception to this rule in order to ensure that they can find a match, even when there’s no other new players queuing."

We are back with another edition of the Developer Update, a series of posts detailing our progress on upcoming features and known issues. This time around, in addition to the normal topics, we’ll have sneak peeks on some changes coming in the mid-chapter update.

    Matchmaking

Recently, the matchmaking system was changed to use the highest rank in a Survivor group when searching for a Killer. This change prevents groups from using a single low ranked player to abuse the matchmaker and get less experienced opponents.

We are on the lookout for any potential edge cases that may remain. To give you an idea of what is expected of the matchmaking system, here’s how the system works:

    • Survivors are matched to a Killer as close to their rank as possible.
    • If the Survivor is playing with a group, the highest ranked Survivor’s rank will be used for matchmaking purposes. (e.g. If a rank 1 and rank 10 Survivor are playing together, the game will search for a rank 1 Killer.)
    • If a match of the same rank is not available, the system will gradually expand the acceptable range until it finds a match. This has a hard limit of 6 ranks above or below your rank.
    • New players between rank 16 and rank 20 receive an exception to this rule in order to ensure that they can find a match, even when there’s no other new players queuing.
    • You will not be matched with someone outside of a given range. This is to ensure that your connection to other players is as good as possible. When on dedicated servers, players will be matched to their nearest data center rather than their distance to other players.
    • Survivors playing in a group with distant friends are an exception to this rule.

If you experience something outside of this range, please be sure to let us know here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/categories/other

    Nintendo Switch™

Dead by Daylight was just released on the Nintendo Switch™. Welcome to any new players who are joining us! We have received quite a few questions since the launch, so we have taken a moment to organize some of the most frequently asked questions here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/90514/

We have also created a Switch section in the bug reports section of the forums in case you stumble upon any issues as you play: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/categories/switch

    Dedicated Servers

Following the test in the last PTB, we decided to postpone the launch of dedicated servers on the live game while we iron out a few issues. Our new launch target for PC and consoles is Fall 2019. We will be running tests on the live build of the game, on PC only, starting in early October. For more details, click here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/87216/

Dedicated servers have, however, been active on the Nintendo Switch™ since launch. This is essential as the Switch version does not support hosting a game. Any improvements made to dedicated servers on other platforms will make their way to the Nintendo Switch™ as well.

    The Nurse Add-on Update

A few months back, we announced that we would be revisiting The Nurse’s add-ons to ensure that all of them are as fair as possible and that she has the correct distribution of add-ons (4 common, 5 uncommon, 5 rare, 4 very rare, 2 ultra rare).

With these changes getting nearer, we would like to share a few of them with you:

    Plaid Flannel

    • Rarity changed from Very Rare to Common.
    • The blink indicator placement has been improved and will now stay visible until The Nurse has reached her destination (it was previously not visible while blinking).

    Heavy Panting

    • Considerably increases maximum blink range.
    • Considerably increases maximum blink charge time.

    Jenner's Last Breath

    • After blinking, allows The Nurse to immediately blink back to her original position by pressing the Secondary Power Button.
    • Requires a blink charge and must be triggered during the chain blink window.

These add-ons—as well as the rest of The Nurse’s new add-ons—will be available for testing in the upcoming mid-chapter 13 PTB. We will be keeping an eye out for feedback once you have had a chance to give them a try.

    The Archives

During the 3rd Anniversary Livestream, we revealed The Archives, a new feature loaded with challenges and rewards. This is one of the most ambitious additions to the game yet and it has been in the making for quite some time. We are very excited to release The Archives in the upcoming mid-chapter patch (and preceding Player Test Build). Be sure to keep an eye out for more details in the coming week.

This concludes the September Developer Update. We have busy months ahead of us, and we are looking forward to seeing what you think of the upcoming changes!

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to improve the queue times much. I'm a rank 17 killer and I agree it is painful. I get to wait 10-20 minutes for a lobby if I don't just give up and switch to survivor instead. I've never had it this bad on survivor, even when I was in the grey ranks (now 11). Usually I get a lobby in seconds to minutes.

  • @mutabletiger4 Some people think that saying something makes it true. If you know you're not tunneling, just ignore their message.

  • PC, East Coast (USA)

Survivor rank 12-11: seconds to a minute

Killer rank 17: 9 minutes around midnight, 19 minutes otherwise

@Go_Go_Roboto You forgot to mention your platform.

  • Youtube: SpaceCoconut for Hag tips and general discussion and speculation.

Twitch: rasuTV (in German) because he's more chill than any of the English-speaking streamers I've come across, no drama, no endless balance complaints. Nice music between matches and a lot to learn by just watching him play different killers. A really pleasant experience.

  • A competitive game is the wrong place to try to make other people happy.

  • I didn't play in the week before the release of the Rift so I didn't get the bonus tiers many people got because of an issue with the game's backend. I'm currently tier 19 and I've played around 66 hours since the release. That makes 3.5 hours per tier. The funny thing is BHVR first said the Rift would be manageable even for casual players and you could gain a tier in an hour of daily playtime. 70 tiers in 70 days. Made sense at the time.

  • The queue times are different at different ranks though. Where would you draw the line when displaying the killer to survivor ratio? A number based on all players online doesn't seem very helpful. A killer might wait seconds for a lobby at rank 1 and over 20 mins at rank 20.

  • I guess it's more complicated than a simple killer to survivor ratio since the game is trying to match you with players of your rank but it's increasing the range as time passes.

  • You're making me hungry! As a Pig second-in-command I'll keep these lines in mind when chasing survivors 😄

  • I play my survivors as skins and I don't assume other people's playstyle based on which survivor they play. I usually pick Nea, Meg, Dwight or Tapp and prejudices others might have about them won't stop me from playing them. I don't often get targeted but if I do, there's always the next match. If I cared about avoiding bad treatment due to stereotypes, I might as well just uninstall the game.

On the positive side, when I started playing I enjoyed Dwight and Bubba because both of them have that vibe of being stupid to some extent so it took some pressure to perform well off my shoulders 😄

  • Yes, you can still earn serum from the rift until the rift closes in 59 days.

  • It works against all killers now, yes.

... I literally tired to explain why we we're swf in a calm manor. The only bad thing I said to him was I don't wanna catch his salt. That's it.

You could have stopped when the death threats came. He/she had obviously crossed the line, no need to provoke them further.

I'm referring specifically to the following lines:

    "holy ######### I'm so scared"

    "like terrified"

"oh so your a legion then"

    "yum"

My worry is that while the internet protects you like a barrier, there might be others close by who that riled up person might take his/her anger out on.

  • Honestly, you don't know who is behind the computer on the other side. When you see that other person is seriously getting triggered, adding fuel to the fire is not the most grown up thing to do. Based on your logs, not the way you might have played the match.

@Avocet - Survivors are as lovely as killers on rank 18 and 19. Then you get to rank 17 and it's all "Flip you, mother flipper!", "Go and flip yourself loser!"

Oh, I have my share of that at low rank too, I just don't usually screenshot them ^^

  • Hesitation is defeat.

On the other hand, I'm a beginner killer but I've shown mercy to survivors when they're obviously new or their teammates ditch them without a good reason. It has gone well so far.

    20191029231830_1.jpg

    The deaths are trap kills.

    20191010233642_1.jpg

All the other three escaped and left the fourth person in dying state. I thought it was pretty lame and I was just doing a daily so I didn't feel like I needed the kill.

The point of the post isnt to see how he can get better, but rather that matchmaking completely fails new players.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/800/PQ61G9V2OO2Y.jpg

    @LordGlint Thank you for this.

@JawsIsTheNextKiller Right, that 4-man group would have been perfect for a rank 10 killer. Instead they get mismatched as well.

@perezkarlo37 Not many people main Hag. She needs a different mindset than most killers and not all players want to invest the time to learn to play her to her full potential.

It's funny, I still get matched with high rank survivors like before the last matchmaking change but get the wait even longer for it.

  • @Desolate_Sands Each to their own. Hag has many ways she can be played and I'm not going to tell you what to do and what not. I don't see how your time setting up would be wasted after leaving an area, provided you didn't oversaturate it with traps.

Proof even a beginner doesn't need Ruin if the survivors are around the same skill level:

    20191103011320_1.jpg

  • Sometimes I feel like some experienced killers just have a sixth sense. Or a really good headset and they can hear your breathing from a mile away.

  • @jus_Ignant said:

Lower Rank Killer wait time is a killer in its own rite any time of the year. You have to commit to the wait in order to rank up and get out of the long wait times. I tend to plan things around the wait and just keep checking back. Do not plan on hopping on and getting in a game because it will never work like that with those gray ranked Killers.

I post on the forums while waiting for a lobby lol.

Rank 18 killer. The wait is 15+ min during the day and ~ 6 min after 11pm.

Rank 12 survivor. Queue times are 1-3 min now with the event.

  • @Desolate_Sands It seems our playstyles are different. You're wrong that Hag is only for camping though.

  • @Desolate_Sands I suppose you know how fast Hex Ruin pops? I'm not excited about playing basement Hag. What's your main killer if you have one?

P.S. Hag strategy was not the point of the thread.

  • This is the Tome, not the Rift. The Rift is the track with the 70 tiers.

  • I'm currently rank 18 killer and I don't even try to queue before late night in ET since it seems to take forever. When I do queue, I get wait times of around 6 mins. I end up playing survivor in the early evening until the other killers go to bed XD

  • From my experience most of the time people are busy fighting for unhooks and completing Tome challenges instead of gen rushing.

I did wish there would have been something fresher to this event. I'm relatively new so I've only been around for one Bloodhunt and now this. Both other games I'm currently playing had lighthearted, satisfying Halloween events (Warframe and Hitman 2). Granted, they're not PVP games but they still did a better job at adding to the holiday mood than any Hallowed Blight skins could.

  • @Fibijean Thank you very much for putting this together!

  • One not very elegant but easy way to fix these challenges (if the devs have the desire to) is to remove the "in a single trial" requirement and pump up the numbers. It's going to be insane when people start to try to complete these challenges in their current form and other players start sabotaging their efforts. There's too much potential for griefing on top of the difficulty.

  • @TheRockstarKnight said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/796504#Comment_796504

Not necessarily. If they thought they could fix everything before Halloween they probably would have tried.

I mean half the event basically doesn't happen without the Archives; it's just hooks, gens, and extra points.

They probably released it now because they didn't have any time left and didn't want to be too disappointing.

Well either that or they just do random things, but I personally prefer to believe the former.

I don't know what their idea was but that's like saying "Here's the pretty box from the cake but we'll give you the cake soon(tm)".

  • And I thought my download files were corrupted... Seriously, they release the Rift only to disable it 30 mins later. This better be up and running again before I'm done with my coffee.

  • Here are all the details about the emblems on the wiki if you want to go deeper:

    https://deadbydaylight.gamepedia.com/Emblems

  • I play both but my survivor queue times are shorter therefore if I don't want to wait, I'm more likely to play survivor.

  • People will always find a reason to DC so I don't see how any killer can be "survivor approved" or "DC-proof".

  • It could pop up in the Shrine of Secrets where you can buy it with iridescent shards but as far as I know, it has only appeared 2-3 times since release.

  • I usually write “gg” out of politeness and to show my appreciation for the other players’ time and efforts. If I’m upset about the match for some reason, I don’t write anything or direct my “gg” at specific people.

I don’t expect to escape as survivor or 4K as killer. Therefore my “gg” is more of a “good try” or “well played” than “good game”. Calling a match a “good game” is too vague for me.

  • I use Spine Chill in 98% of my survivor games and it was nice not knowing whether I can trust my Spine Chill in the beginning of the match because it could be Myers. I wish they didn't make the change.

  • God, I didn't see this was a necro'd thread...

NOW is the time to start saving up those bloodpoints guys and gals! That way, when the event starts you'll have a stockpile of bloodpoints to buy up plenty of offerings as soon as the event starts. And use those offerings folks. No excuse not to. They are about the equivalent of a Escape Cake or Survivor Pudding in terms of return. Sometimes even more. Every game I play where I'm the only one using the event offering makes me want to pull out my hair. More people stockpiling bloodpoints now, means more people using offerings during the event, means I don't go bald. Don't make me go bald.

Did we get any info on the event already?

can I have a link pls

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/93854/news-withering-blight-event-overview

  • I've played several survivor matches and a couple killer matches (due to the longer queues). I'm getting consistently a ping around 50 ms in the lobby which is better than the previous test. I've had a couple games as survivor which felt like moving through molasses. I haven't noticed any rubberbanding or teleporting around.

We've had a couple disconnects, including the error message "player disconnected during loading" but then in the tally screen nobody was displayed as disconnected. I've also encountered a glitched lobby without a killer. When my teammates started to leave, the game continued to put new people in that lobby.

Aside from that the gameplay has been mostly normal but I don't do a lot of looping.

  • Depends on the ritual and my mood. Sometimes I'm just not feeling that killer/survivor at the moment. Or I'm in the mood to mess around. I don't care about pipping when I'm doing dailies.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/94562/how-can-so-many-not-understand-what-free-to-play-means

Holy ######### there is actually so much wrong with with this entire post, I'm gonna need to break it down into parts. First, there are many pricing models in gaming and the three most popular are purchased, free-to-play, and subscription-based. An example of a purchased game is Dead by Daylight, a F2P game being Team Fortress 2, and a subscription game being RuneScape. A game is not F2P just because you are not paying a monthly fee. If I pay $20 at the gate to own the game in my library, absolutely in no way is that game free to play. I paid for the software. It is literally impossible for a game that requires you to buy it to be free to play.

As for "looking at things from a developer side" yeah I agree with you. It is difficult to run a game and sometimes as a developer you need extra ways of bringing in money. Isn't that why we started to get paid DLC content at $7 a pop? In exchange for supporting the game further we gave them money via DLCs they released. Then Behaviour decided to inject this game with microtransactions, giving those that ponied up the money for skins all the customization in the world. Meanwhile us losers who can't afford to buy new skins are stuck with #########-all because they refuse to give us anything beyond a few ######### recolors and Prestige clothing. That's it. Why is it that a game that costs $20 at the door then shoves DLCs down our throats also allowed to peddle micro transactions to us all the time? If the purpose is to bring in more money for Behaviour; isn't that the reason they made DLC? Why, it couldn't be that Behaviour has slowly become money hungry, could it? Remember when customizing your character in a game was free if the game had it?

Next, you think the act of Behaviour having to balance the game justifies insane in-game monetization. Balancing takes a few employee hours at best with most of the work coming from the community testing and vocalizing what's wrong then Behaviour putting in the shallowest piss puddle of effort to "balance" the game. That's why PTB exists. We test for them for free. As for dedicated servers: We have been paying for most DLCs since December 2016 and only in the last few months has Behaviour even put effort into dedicated servers. We all know that the reason for the insane amount of DLC, skins, microtransactions, and now the Rift is all for greed. Not growth. To say otherwise is pure, willing ignorance. If they wanted to use DLC and microtransactions to actually grow the game for players, we would have seen dedicated servers launched by the end of last year or at least during the second half of this year.

Now for your question about how people want the game to be monetized, let me just answer it for you real quick. We paid twenty ######### dollars for this game on PC; thirty on console. We are constantly having DLCs pushed on us. We are constantly having microtransactions pushed on us. We are now going to have a battle pass pushed on us and pressuring us to buy it each season and spend money to advance levels. Dead by Daylight, a game that you have to pay $20 for, is using three free-to-play methods of monetizing the game, despite being a game you have to purchase. Stop acting like this is okay. Just because we're "getting some content for free" doesn't make it okay. We paid $20. That content locked behind a paywall in the Rift should be ours. We paid money for this game up front and are constantly hitting paywalls to buy new DLC, not even mentioning skins. Stop enabling Behaviour to do this. Giving any developer a pass on putting free-to-play monetization into a paid game is actively hurting the video game industry. We should not have free-to-play monetization methods in a game you have to pay money for. If Dead by Daylight was free-to-play then it would be 100% fine, but guess what, it isn't. Imagine if instead of Behaviour putting most of the skins behind a paywall they just gave that ######### to us as rewards for playing their game. That's how it would have been done less than 10 years ago. Since you're an ancient gamer according to yourself you should remember this. Remember customizing characters in Tony Hawk? Remember how that just came with the game? We didn't have to pay ######### for that on top of already buying the game. Battleblock Theater. Payday 2. No Time To Explain. Quake Live. Borderlands 2. These games all gave you ways to customize your character without dropping $10 on a single skin. It was just there. You bought the game, launched it up, and were either immediately presented with it or unlocked it for free.

TL;DR: Enabling Behaviour's use of greedy monetization acts taken from free-to-play games used in a purchased retail game that costs money to play is ######### gamers over.

Thank you for this. Several people have written quality posts like this one. The situation has been described as well as it could be and still it's astounding how adept a certain part of the forum population is at ignoring these posts and going back to budgeting their little auric cells for the upcoming Rift.

  • I'm playing DbD for the frustration lol.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCc4SU-NSW4&t=594

(time stamp 9:54 if the forum parser messes it up)

In all seriousness though, I rarely have relaxing games. If I do, I am just having a good day. Some days are bad. Most are in the middle.

  • If a match of the same rank is not available, the system will gradually expand the acceptable range until it finds a match. This has a hard limit of 6 ranks above or below your rank.

In other words we are being paid to play the game.

Sounds fine to me. I'm playing the game because I want to.

Good. You could keep track of the hours it took you to complete the Rift and then see whether you got paid a fair hourly rate.

I haven't heard of anybody else making an estimate how long one would need to play to complete it so I'll use @SpaceCoconut 's and you can use your own data later.

He said one would need 14 hours of matches. So you're getting paid $190 for 14 hours which is close to $14 per hour. But it could take longer, who knows. The average pay in USA last month was $28 per hour. The federal minimum wage is $7.25. I guess it's not such a bad deal after all but I'd rather not turn gaming into a job, no matter the pay.

    Can you say...”cash grab”?

because that’s all I can think. They know people who really want these skins will buy them ASAP instead of waiting to earn them at the end of the month, especially the Spirit skin.

Yeah, that's why the sadness. Personally I've had my answer and I'll be adjusting my financial decisions accordingly. Here's the article Kilmeran posted if you're interested:

Excuse me for the pessimism but I don't expect things to get better. I don't mind supporting game developers but I don't like being milked for cash. I'm not rich lol.

  • So you can buy them but not earn them for the next 2 weeks? That's sad.

  • Well, it's the PTB. You can expect bugs. I say, let's hope this doesn't make it to the live build.

  • I'm curious about that too but only BHVR can tell us. The empty gaps get quite long in the Free track.
