......maybe the game is pretty balanced after all!
- Both roles can have a great game in the same match.
- Both roles can be fun.
- Both roles can be boring.
- Both roles can dominate a match.
- Both roles can get crushed.
- Both roles can be mega toxic.
- Both roles have maps that benefit or hinder them.
- Both roles have exceptionally powerful items/add-ons/offerings.
- Both roles have perks that the other side despises.
- Both roles get buffed, nerfed, and adjusted.
Yeah. Pretty balanced!
The game could theoretically be perfectly balanced when it comes to mechanics, and it could be be balanced in that both roles "can be fun". But that doesn't mean that it's actually fun. If neither roles were fun to play at all, they'd technically be balanced in that regard lol.
Personally I think the issue is that the pendulum swings way too wide. Matches almost always feel like you're completely helpless, or you're dominating. Balanced or not, that's going to cause issues when it comes to balance due to the perception alone.
-
I don't think the devs should even bother reintroducing the system unless they plan on introducing a visible MMR Rating, and they rework or remove rank.
Players will never be satisfied as long as those rank numbers still exist, and there is no other visible metric noting that they're actually getting a fair match. Losing against a bunch of red ranks? MMR is broken. Winning against a bunch of green ranks? MMR is broken.
It won't matter if the system is functioning perfectly or not. It's a perceptual issue. Which is exactly why "fixing" the system will be a pointless endeavor if you don't deal with the relics of the past weighing it down.
-
I'd prefer they just make interesting characters instead of just checking boxes on a list. Or maybe the could focus on the important stuff like fixing the game. That seems a bit more pressing.
Plus, BHVR has already (and continues to) diversify the cast, so... it just seems like a weird request.

Not even.
Just daring people to come up with original arguments.
Every bullet point was either: Making illogical comparisons; pointing out the obvious whilst pretending the point you made was actually a negative somehow; or complaining that you have to expend effort.
I don't really think I need anyone needs a new argument...
- You might hope those perks are never activated, but they will be, and there's little a killer can do to stop that.
- Adrenaline isn't really an equivalent, even if it's supposed to be. If it was, a real equivilent, NOED couldn't be cleansed.
- Yep. That's how totems work in general.
- This is akin to complaining that a player in a fighting game is just "spamming moves". Why wouldn't they if you keep getting hit by them? If that strategy works, then people are going to use it. And there's nothing wrong with that.
- Again, yep. It's a shame you have to put effort in to counter NOED, but that's how totems work. You have to go out of your way to counter a killer perk, and killers have to go out of their way to counter survivor perks. It's the circle of life.
- The exact same thing could be said about NOED itself. If you do bones, you essentially waste a killer's perk slot. So what's the difference?
Not sure why I even bothered to respond to each point considering that I know nothing I could ever say will sway your opinion.
I guess I just want it on record that I think basically everything you said was silly, kinda salty, and clearly biased.

But I love chaining 8 stabs in a row! I love the dash that they have, the speed to catch up with survivors quickly...
Despite all that SWS/FM is, it is the lethal option. It forces survivors to mend or be put in the ground.... because it gives you two methods to down people. You would be surprised by how oppressive those addons can be when used as an option instead of the rule, which everyone tries when using them. You force them to mend, which you can then down them. Its frankly oppressive to survivors.
I mean that's fine and all, but I'm strictly talking about Legion's base kit, no addons.
The fact you essentially have to run specific addons with Legion to be viable at all (imo at least) isn't a good thing. I have the same problem with other killers too, but it's much more noticeable with legion.
Addons should be... well addons. Supplimental additions to the kit, not required tools that allow the kit to work in the first place. Idk.

You trade a lethal power for a stall/tracking power.
Yeah, but there's no real way to trade that stall power for lethality in return. It's not like you're trying to balance things, you're just gimped from the start. Hell, if you even just M1 you lose your power gauge, and if you miss your attack? Blinded and stunned for like 3 seconds or something?
It's a bit of a joke.
Legion is all stall, and that's the problem. And on top of that, they aren't much fun to play as or against imo. Playing as legion I feel like I'm fighting against their mechanics/kit more than I'm hunting survivors, and as a survivor you just dread how drawn out the match will be.
Idk. Legion needs a rework imo.

@Halun apologies if we're having a misunderstanding. It's not my way to copy/paste replies, hence I merged a lot of threads so that the answer was done once...I only update when I have more information or if I can explain something further. I try to communicate as much information as I possibly can, for the sake of clarity...it is difficult sometimes though if we just don't have the information available. For example like in this MMR issue - we just had the information on this today, it did only come out this week so data has to get analyzed etc, the first thing I did was communicate it here...all of us would do the same.
And don't worry, I didn't take your comment personally. We're all on the same page with this - we all play the same game after all.
Fair enough, and thanks for the response.
-
For the most part I have no issue with the hatch.
But it is really annoying when you're up against a 4man and you're working on your 3rd kill, and that person just dies on hook to let the other person get hatch. Stuff like that is frustrating, but I don't really know how you'd even fix it, so I try to not let it bother me.
Keys are a different story in a way, so I won't even go into the problems I have with those lol.

Nope, I think you'll find I didn't. I think you'll also find quite a few posts where I was saying how much I struggled with the aura's due to the fact I'm colour blind and as soon as I had information that we were making a change, I posted that here.
With regards to MMR, I know it's being looked at to see where it's not working perfectly on our side and that's all the information I have right now.
My apologies, I don't think I was clear in my response and that lead to confusion. Let me clarify...
When I said "you" I didn't mean you specifically as an individual, but mods/devs in general. Because I know other mods/devs most certainly responded with copypasted responses to the aura issue.
Again, i'm mostly neutral on the copypasting thing, I just found your response a bit odd since that seemed to be the go-to method of dealing with the aura issue while it existed lol.

It's not actually part of my job, no.
Plus, people wouldn't be satisfied with a copy/paste answer (quite rightly!). So it would change nothing.
But isn't that exactly how you handled auras before they were fixed? Just copypasted a "soonTM" message?
Not even trying to imply anything here, but that seems kinda contradictory.

que times have gotten a lot better. IMO that shows playing matches has been prioritized over waiting in lobbies. I have noticed that matchmaking is way better in peak times so I would guess that means that there is a wide range of acceptable partners to get us in the game. I am trusting it will improve. I can’t remember a time when we weren’t complaining about matchmaking. I started about a year ago and got paired against high skill players when I was a rank 20-18 killer. It took me SO long to get into yellow ranks facing that competition. They changed that matchmaking from average SWF to highest rank in SWF.
I haven't noticed a change in matchmaking wait times at all.
Regardless, without some quantifiable indication that matchmaking has been implemented? I can't blame people for doubting it even exists.

I guess their worry is that players change it into hot pink or something, cause that'll stand out a lot but like.. who cares? If color blind people can play the game as well as a normal vision player can, then that's a major win for the Dead by Daylight community.
I mean what would be the difference though?
Auras are supposed to be clear and visible lol. I can't imagine how hot pink would be any more visible to someone with normal vision compared to red, or yellow, or any other color. But even if it was, would it be that game changing? Everyone would have access to the same tools. Everyone would be able to change it to the most visible color for them.
Idk. I just don't get it. I feel like they're so set on this specific art style that they're willing to ignore colorblind players, because they seemingly can't stand for their assets to be be colored in any other way.

I haven't seen the new auras yet, but just so you know auras have been red/yellow/white for a long time. Yellow for survivors (that arent on hooks) red for survivors on hooks/downed, as well as Hooks/Generators/Totems, and Killer.
And white is for like... blocked generators, alarm clocks, the jigsaw cabinet, and the plague pools.
The fact I can't even tell that says a bit about their choice of coloring system doesn't it?

They need to stop the excuse that players will gain "an unfair advantage" by using color-blindness mode and add one already. BHVR is looking like douchebags by not implementing it. So many players would be so happy if they did. They have literally NOTHING to lose.
Yeah, I don't really understand that argument. If everyone has access to the ability to recolor auras/scratches, then it can't really give anyone an "unfair advantage" can it?
All it can do is give people who are already at a disadvantage the help they need to see auras as clearly as people with normal vision.
Changing auras from red to blue or whatever won't help a player with normal vision who can see both just as easily. It makes no sense lol
-
It's better than it was, but it's not... perfect?
I'm colorblind so it's really just the usage of red and green that makes things difficult. Like the brightness is better now, so I can actually see the auras now and play the game again, but I still have a hard time telling the red and green auras apart (and I can't see blood at all, and scratch marks are still hard as hell for me to follow, but those are different issues).
Swapping auras and scratchmarks to a more colorblind friendly set of colors (like yellow and purple or something), and making blood stand out more would fix all my problems with the game's UI/visual assets.
TLDR; It's better than it was, but there is still a lot of room to improve as far as accessibility goes.
-
I don't think there is a matchmaking system.
Nothing has changed, and I don't expect it to change as I play more matches.
Show me my rating, and get rid of ranks, and maybe I'll change my opinion.

@Gay Myers (Luzi) said:
The MMR has changed, basically the rank numbers do not matter in that regard anymore. You get matched based on the skill rating of the killer you're using. Here's a Q&A that goes into a bit of detail about it: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/179192/community-questions-skill-rating-matchmaking
So what is the point of maintaining rank?
Because from my perspective, all it is doing is causing confusion and angering players who can't separate rank from MMR rating. It's a net negative and imo needs to be removed until you reintroduce your "new ranking system" along with ratings.

i think what happened here is this:
New players with no experience yet being thrown into boiling water to evaluate. I can see the reasoning, but jeesh, that's not a good approach. it's bringing fast results, but it's frustrating.
Maybe if the devs would give us a rematch button, to show new players the ropes (hooks?)...
I mean you're spot on. I think that's exactly what's happening. Seems like the system is testing players with no matchmaking data.
And in a game with a "quick match" / "unranked" option, this wouldn't really matter. They could just go play QP with their more randomized match making and have a fun game. Instead, they're essentially forced to play competitive games, and deal with the eccentricities of competitive MMR systems.

I didn’t say they were challenged implementing colourblind options.
I said they’re challenged coming up with colourblind options that cannot be abused by players without colourblindness that gives unfair advantages to those who have the colourblind options switched off.
How exactly would allowing players to change the colors result in an unfair advantage?
If literally everyone has access, then it's not exactly unfair is it? Auras aren't supposed to be hard to see, and if you're having trouble seeing them? Then colorblind or not, I see no issue with allowing you to change the color to make things easier for you. Everyone else would have the same capability, so...
If anything, right now colorblind players are being subjected to an unfair disadvantage because we have more difficulty seeing auras that players with normal vision have no issue seeing.
Edit: I'm dumb. I didn't see your second post (thought it was someone else). So ignore me entirely lol. Sorry about that.
I do want to thank BHVR for at least changing the auras back rather quickly. I still can't see blood, and auras still aren't... great, but this is better than before by far. So thanks for that. At least I can play now.

I guess we all just have to wait a week or so until everyone does their placement matches then. It's just not fun at all that we have to stomp new players for it to start working properly. And it's not fair for new players to have to go against players who are more experienced but I hope eventually it ends up being worth it and starts working. Also yes having MMR hidden feels so wrong. It almost makes me think they did that so we have no way of knowing if it's actually working as intended or not and if it's not so they won't have to deal with it. I don't like saying that but I don't know, having it hidden is not right at all.
If they actually have a working, decent MMR system? Yeah basically.
Once the majority of the players in the system go through their qualifying matches, things will tend to fall into place a lot better. I know it sucks for the moment (new seasons always suck at the start), but if the system works, things will improve slowly over time.
But yeah, the hidden MMR thing is sketchy as hell to me, and that's kinda my fear as well. Without ratings, we literally cannot know if it's functioning or not. Even if they aren't lying to us, and they DO have a real MMR system, how can we just take their word for it? I hate saying that too, because I feel so conspiratorial... but it bothers me.

I agree that the biggest problem is that the system is not transparent. I've already played over 10 games. It seems that now I only play with players of my level, but it is an assumption. The last 10 days I was actively playing as a survivor and with this new system at first I match with any player. If the mmr was running behind, last week it didn't count. It is not clear what they consider to be a good skill. I know it is difficult to measure it. What if I can say now that the games I've had have been worse overall, or the killer was very bad or the team was. If you can clarify what you consider and how you measure the ability to stay and wait for feedback it would be good. Now the game for survivors lining up alone is a nightmare.
Yeah the lack of transparency (and clinging to ranks, despite the fact they know it's causing confusion) is an issue.
I can only speak based on experience with other games with reasonably well-working systems... But even taking prior weighting into account, qualifying matches can vastly change your ranking based on performance. That's why in OW for instance, people (who played seriously at least) often took their placement games really seriously. It's awful if you're trying to start in plat, after reaching plat last season, only to end up midway in gold because you had a string of bad placement matches.
Not telling players about how the system works will only hinder players and cause this "new season" phenomenon to be more intense and last longer while the system tries to work out players relative ratings, because the players literally don't know what's happening.
I couldn't imagine trying to get to a high rank in OW without even knowing HOW the system functioned... without knowing my rating or rank... and without even knowing WHEN I'm playing my placement matches. etc. It seems insane to me that they're going about it this way.
-
@stargazer9 said:

Dude, most of us have already played way more than 10 matches already and it still sucks.
I'm not trying to sound pithy, but have you played other ranked games? You might've played all your qualifying matches, but the people you're up against might not have...
I mean I've played lots of early season games of ranked games (like Overwatch, etc.) where despite playing my qualifying games and getting plopped into my rank, I'll see other unranked players who are clearly still in the midst of their qualifier on my team (or the opposing team). It's not that unusual. I mean yeah, it sucks because sometimes you end up with potato teammates that drag you down, but other-times you get god-tier players who assist you.
New seasons always suck at first. And that's essentially what we're experiencing here. The difference is that this is an asymmetric game, so the effects are slightly different.
I really think the biggest issue is that we don't have any actual data telling us what our MMR ratings are, or how match performance affects it. There's zero transparency and that worries me more. I can deal with crappy matches for a little while if I know it'll improve. But I don't like being in the dark about it. They need to just delete ranks entirely if they aren't going to introduce an MMR rating.

@Hex_Oblivion said:
Well for 1. I’m not saying red rank = master level. But they experience compared to a yellow, brown, or green rank. Experience is something.
Also that’s why they should combine the old matchmaking with the old rank reset to keep weeding out those that don’t play won’t stay in purple ranks that make it easier for them to get to red rank. And those that continue playing and IMPROVING will get to red rank from green rank ect. shouldn’t have a problem.
Right, but if even a portion of the red rank playerbase aren't actually as skilled as their rank indicates, it renders the entire ranking system meaningless. Skill based ranking/ratings have to mean something. They have to be reflective of the skill level of player holding that rank. And right now, with the system we currently have? It just doesn't, there's just no consistency.
Experience is something, but experience alone shouldn't grant you access to the highest level ranking if that ranking is supposed to be indicative of skill. Because while skill generally improves with experience, experience alone doesn't beget skill.

Cause BHVR is reliable. Not really. They only say that to hide that they messed up match ranking and people were constantly dodging low ranks in lobbies, hence why they removed seeing ranks in lobbies. Rank is a sign of playtime, yes. Playtime also comes with experience. With experience you also have some sort of skill that expands.
Just to let you know, back when survivors could fast vault at any angle & no entity blocker, BHVR said that took skill.
The only reason they’re coming up with this BS is cause Red ranks would dodge lobbies when a Yellow or Brown was see in their lobby. Guess what BHVR did. They removed being able to see ranks in lobbies, and all of sudden “rank doesn’t mean skill.” Aren’t these the save developers that base their balance around low rank mentality?
Also Xbox has one of the smallest DBD player base, and the even now I’m still paired up with baby survivors no matter how much I escape.
If your entire basis for "red rank = skilled" ultimately amounts to "playtime = experience = skill" then we simply disagree at a fundamental level. I know people who have played games for thousands of hours but despite all that time and investment, they wouldn't hold a candle to competitive players. They simply approach the game from a different perspective.
And that's fine, but Rank alone doesn't account for that or take that disparity into account. That's why it's useless. Hence why some red rank survivor groups are incredibly skilled, and others are laughable. The metrics required to reach red rank simply don't amount to skill. It amounts to investment. And while most skilled players will likely be invested in the game and will spend time playing it, there are lots of other, lower skilled players who will do the same.
If your ranking metric doesn't take that disparity into account? Then it is fundamentally meaningless for actually determining skill.
-
I had to quit as well. Being physically incapable of seeing auras just makes every match frustrating and unfun for everyone involved.
I'll just be playing other games until they fix it... whenever that is...

I’ve only lost 1/5 games shown on my post. My MMR score should’ve gone up no? Those aren’t all the games I’ve played, I’ve played more, but it’s still rainbow matchmaking. Rank means skill. Even if it’s to an extent.
Rank is utterly meaningless and is only really indicative of playtime.
A player might be highly skilled, but literally incapable of playing constantly. They'd end up being lower rank, limited by their own playtime simply because they cannot ever pip enough to get to red rank.
Another player (especially on Survivor side) might be low-skilled, but simply played enough lucky matches to pip, or finding skilled players to team with that effectively boosted their rank.
Even BHVR admits this. Skill is more indicated on killer side simply because you have nothing else to rely on. But it isn't a great metric to rely on, and on the survivor side? It's a complete crapshoot hence the "red rank survivor potato" meme.
The real question is this: Is MMR even a thing, and if so, does it function at all? We don't know the answer, because they're hiding any and all details from us. MMR could be vastly superior to ranked matchmaking, or it could be completely non-functional. We will never know unless they choose to introduce a metric that tells us as much.

i don’t believe there actually is a functioning MMR as we are led to believe.
If you ask me, they just opened up the matchmaking and call it MMR.
If you’re wondering why I might be so skeptical, just remember, they wanted to hide the ranks with this new MMR. These are good examples as of why.
I've felt like a paranoid conspiracy theorist for saying this, but...
I've been saying that unless there are actual MMR Ratings displayed, we would never know if BHVR actually "updates" the game with a functioning MMR system or not. Especially considering the fact that they're sticking by rank for some reason despite the fact that they've admitted it isn't indicative of skill level.
And if they refuse to display MMR ratings, and keep ranks, nothing will change on the "player happiness" front. Players will still point to ranks as a meaningful metric, and will scapegoat it in vindication for the losses, etc.
OP's post is somewhat proof that I'm right on that. It's already starting.

The current/old matchmaking system is designed to match killers with survivors who are about the same seasonal rank, it's not supposed to be completely random. MMR is supposed to match killers or survivors who purposefully de-rank or go inactive for awhile causing multiple rank resets, with people who are at their actual skill level, instead of with people who are around their current seasonal rank. The fact that it matched me, a former rank 1 but current rank 12 killer, against a team of survivors who are rank 2-4, makes it seem like MMR is already active. And it wasn't just that 1 match either, I'm getting at least 1 red rank survivor in just about every match now as killer.
You, and literally everyone else, forever. You're pretending this is something new lol. It isn't, by a long-shot.
I mean, does that mean that MMR was active last month when I consistently was matched against red rank survivors despite being a rank 20 killer? Or should we go even further back? lol.
The reality is that matchmaking based on Rank has never worked. It has always prioritized location/wait time/connection speed over rank (which itself is a meaningless metric that is only indicative of playtime, not skill). So pretending MMR is secretly active because matchmaking is performing precisely as crappy as it always has is a bit silly, and kind of paranoid tbh.
The fact that Rank Matchmaking has done it's job so poorly is literally why people have complained for so long that BHVR is finally giving us MMR in the first place.
But my entire point is that the lack of a visible change in matchmaking and BHVR's insistence on propping up the meaningless "rank" metric is why I've remained so adamant that when MMR actually is active, we need a visible rating metric. Otherwise how will players know anything has changed in the slightest?
And considering your conspiracy theory, I feel a bit vindicated. People can't tell the difference at all.

Sometimes I wonder if it secretly is active on PS4. Yesterday, when I was rank 12 on killer (was rank 1 in the past before multiple resets, so I have high MMR) I got matched against an all red rank survivor team. If MMR isn't active yet, why would it match a rank 12 killer against rank 2-4 survivors?
Precisely because it isn't using MMR? ie. it's totally random matchmaking lol.
This kind of stuff is the exact reason I stated they need to be transparent about how the MMR system ranks players, with clear ratings. Because active or not, as long as there is no MMR rating, but "ranks" exist there is literally 0 way for players to know it's having any effect at all.

Mr. Hulan, I just wanted to let you know that the devs DO care. They've gotten the feedback for colorblind issues with the new auras, and are working on a fix. The reason they don't immediately switch back is due to bug issues with the old aura system. It was certainly a huge oversight on their part, but they're working!
I'm well aware. But that doesn't really excuse the lack of QA, the lack of accessibility options, and the general lack of consideration.
It took them days to even acknowledge it, and when they did, all they can say is "we're working on it". I suppose that's better than "they're working as intended" but it's not much consolation.
I'm sure they are working. But when will they clean up the mess they've made? In a week? In a month? Who knows.
All I know is I can't play the game until they do.

Honestly? Yeah... I just keep my chat closed unless I feel like the people I played are going to be courteous.
I know it sounds a bit silly, but I can usually determine how people will react in post-game by their behavior in game. This method hasn't failed me yet, so most of my interactions are positive or at the very least neutral, because I control when I want to have them.
I understand the point OP is getting at, but I mean... I already have the tools to ignore people if I want, so personally I'm fine. I wouldn't be opposed to more active moderation, but competitive insults/trash talk/etc? it just doesn't impact me because I refuse to let it.

Lol they're anything but fine.
They seem to be an issue for literally all sides, and they're impossible to play with if you're colorblind.
Even if you think "oh these aren't so bad", or "I like the style better now!", have some consideration for the rest of us. Some of us can't even play the game anymore because of these changes... 😟

I mean, I'm fine with everyone boycotting the game, but that's because I'm colorblind, can't see auras now, and BHVR doesn't give a damn.

Yep. I contacted through mail. And gave them the information they needed (logs etc.). You know what they said? Flush dns and restart the modem. They won't accept that the problem is on their side. That's why I'm angry.
I'm not trying to pry too much, but can I ask if you're playing on wi-fi?
I know it's an odd question, but... well I experienced some similar issues (disconnects and such) on wi-fi, despite other games/programs/etc. functioning normally (which confused me for the longest time).

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but don't you think this should be pinned somewhere, or announced?
People are clearly upset about this, and we shouldn't have to dig through threads or pester mods to hear about basic responses like this.
It's kind of bewildering tbh.

It's only really competitive if you're a try hard. If you only play to have fun and for blood points and your team then it's far from competitive. Especially if you don't cry about the small things like someone typing ez in chat lmfao.
The game is still competitive in nature. That doesn't mean people can't play it casually, but when ranked mode is the base play mode (regardless of whether or not matchmaking is broken), it's pretty clear that the devs intend for competition to take the forefront.
Hence why I've advocated for a "quickplay" or "unranked" mode to allow more casual focused players to play without forced competitive interactions.

As a colorblind player, I literally cannot see the red auras. Usu play killer.
Of course I hate it. The game is unplayable now.
-
This has made the game unplayable for colorblind people. I mean, it's so bad that even normal-sighted players are having difficulty seeing auras.
This needs to be dealt with ASAP. I can't even imagine how the devs thought this was a good idea. The least they can do is fix it quickly.

Devs have confirmed it's not intended.
Link? Because I haven't seen them say anything about it yet.
Considering the effect it's having on colorblind players (the game is literally unplayable now) I'd really appreciate seeing their response.
Thanks.
-
Yeah it's basically impossible for anyone with deuteranopia to see auras now.
Hell, I mean even people who aren't colorblind are complaining that it's difficult.
So you aren't alone here. It's a genuine problem.

No.

No. This game isn't competitive. It gives another thing to try for/worry about. There's no harm in 1 person escaping from hatch.
It 100% is competitive lol.
But still, no. If changes need to be made to balance hatches, so be it. But they don't need to be removed entirely...

Yes! And the bots need to go on to the forums to complain too!
You were being serious, right?
I was joking, but I think your idea is winning me over.
-
This is scarily accurate ime.
But it could be improved by using a quadrant chart ranking skill/toxicity instead lol. That would be perfect.
-
Welp. That's a request I guess. I wonder what's next? "Can the bots automate slurs in the post-game lobby too? For realism!" lol

Wednesday? I thought the Rift comes out Wednesday. Hm...
I was under the impression that the patch was Tuesday, and Rift was Wednesday.
But I don't know 100%.

It'd also get rid of TACTICAL DISCONNECT, INCOMING! to give your SWF buddy hatch after the killer dared to leave you on the ground for like 10 seconds and you didn't bring unbreakable (because by extension, that's the Smoll PP build when combo'd with the DS you never play without)

Mobile literally already fixed DC for hatch.
How is the free mobile version the superior version of this game?
Lol I want my money back
