It's 2021 and we're still dealing with VPNing killers

This is just too funny now. These devs still allow people to come in and ruin games with a ping of 500+. This is really aggravating and it's time to stop it.

Comments

  • What should the devs do, exactly?

  • Boot you if you go above 500+ ping or something like that. Even if you just have bad internet you're making it impossible for others to play the game and it's not fair.

  • Server sided hit validation, but when that gets implemeted everyone bitches about it

Well it’s kind of annoying when a survivor makes a scream noise as if they got hit, but server validation says “Nope”. I think that’s what’s more frustrating than not getting the actual hit. Just code it better so the hit gets denied, and the survivor doesn’t scream.

that would need an entire recode and fundamental change of the system from the ground up, and considering we've been asking them to do that to fix bugs for years and, uh... yeah, that'd doubtful

Why would it need a whole recode? Why can’t it be something like:

Server Hit Validation = No hit detected on sever side, therefore no trigger for survivor scream on killer side.

    Pardon my programming ignorance.

Okay so basically, the game is programmed so that the scream is client sided. As soon as your client thinks you got a hit, it will play the sound effect and begin the successful attack animation. While it does this, it sends a message to the server saying "hey, btw, I got this hit here :)".

In the days of P2P (peer to peer), where everything was client sided, this worked fine since the killer's client was the server, so they were playing on effectively 0 ping. Ping being the time taken to transmit information to the server, measured in miliseconds (ms).

However, we've been on dedicated servers for a while, meaning the server is now a point of reference- in theory, anyway. The game is still mostly coded for P2P gameplay. For example, the reason grabs were/are, and the reason Dead Hard is, so broken is that the game has several checks in place from P2P days. The killer client would register the grab, send it to the server, which would send it to the survivor client. Currently the client registers the grab and sends it to the server, and the server then checks if it would be possible to grab (for example, if the survivor registered that they let go of the generator before the killer registers they got the grab, the grab would be cancelled).

So, in order to implement your propsed solution, the netcode would have to be altered to make the SFX and animation server-sided, which opens a whole new can of worms. For example, you hit a survivor while you have 160ms ping and the survivor has 100ms. The server registers this and validates the hit with the survivor client before sending it back. In total that is 260ms to validate the hit and 160ms to send back that the hit is okay, or 360ms in total. For that 360ms, you would be able to walk around freely as if nothing has happened, and then suddenly you'd get hit with the animation and scream.

It just isn't that viable of a solution, and relies on BHVR not messing up the netcode coding. Which I assume they don't want to do, considering how long the fixes to Dead Hard and grabs have been thusfar.

Ping is basically the amount of time to transfer information to and from a server, and is measured in miliseconds, or ms. The higher the ping, the longer it takes, and so slower the network usually is.

Wow, really good explanation. It’d be nice if there was an easy way for the server to wait until the server registers the hit before sending the scream SFX to the killer client, but definitely don’t trust the current dev team to not screw that up.

Considering the amount of bugs the game constantly produces and how archaic it is at is core, they really should be rebuilding the game from scratch on the side. That's the only way I can imagine them fixing all of these issues. But who knows what they're up to. 🤕

Very easy to do, but then you'd notice lag in every single interaction, because the information would have to be transferred to the server, the server would need to process it, then send it back to you - and information can only travel at the speed of light (at most).

  • @WretchedElk said:

So basically in this game everything that happens on the killer's screen is the law according to the server (except for pallet stuns. Not pallet vaults, just stuns). So if a killer has really high ping everybody else is really slow and laggy to him so if they get a hit on their screen but it doesn't make sense on your screen the server says it's legit and you go down anyway.

  • Right, but the way VPNs work is that they make the server/service you are connecting to think you are somewhere else. So they use a VPN to make it seem like they are in the U.S. Now what should the devs do?

  • Possibly, but I'd just imagine all the same problems would carry over unless they change their practices. Similarly to how EA handles The Sims.

  • What exactly would you have the devs do? It isn't possible to block VPNs because that is literally their purpose, to make it so you can't see where the person is coming from and to make it seem like they are coming from somewhere else.

  • Boot the killer from the game if they are consistently getting 200+ ping. Either they are VPNing or they have ungodly internet which in that case they shouldn't be playing the game either.

  • So what makes you sure, that you played against chinese players using a VPN? Got any proof, or was it just because of high ping?

The ping is relative to the VPN's servers, though, since the game's server is being tricked into believing that's where the signal is coming from.

  • no because of VPNs

That's not a good solution. That basically punishes people who are poor and cant afford good internet.

  • RIP Satelite players

  • That is a lot of edited posts.

But it's not just killers. Plenty of survivors do it as well, it's just as advantageous.

The entitlement drips from every syllable.

You may live in a high-developmemt are near a major server hub, but most people don't. Most people go above 100+ ping multiple times in a trial, killer and survivor. And even if you take that into account, you're still effectively banning everyone who lives rurally or in a country without a server hub.

  • Would be nice if they did atleast something years ago people would use vpns in rainbow six siege and it made the game unplayable

    it plagues all multiplayer games

Well maybe but 100 ms ping is not suited for multiplayer games. It has been like this since the beginning of online gaming with cs 1.6.

At least, if hit server validation was working properly, why not but that's not the case and high ping players always provide terrible hits.

We're not even remotely close to talking about continents.

  • One thing is for certain.

These server-sided validation fake "hits" happening so frequently cheapen the game IMO. I.E. It's not a good look. Right off the bat it lets a new player know the game suffers from server/coding issues.

Among the rest of the performance issues it already has.

We're not even remotely close to talking about continents.

No we are and I encounter this regularly with Peruvians, Chileans, Colombians, Ecuadorians, Argentinians, etc. being paired with people on East Coast NA.

I have also seen South Africans paired with Europeans. Both described situations are players from other -continents- getting paired with players on other -continents- which is an inexcusable problem. That isn't entitled and if you're gonna grandstand over that it says a lot about you. I'm sorry that ######### actually happens that doesn't fit your BS narrative about entitlement.

  • @Rey_512 said:

What should the devs do, exactly?

Answer is EXTREMELY simple. Have you played Escape from Tarkov? Devs managed to do something painfully simple - if your ping is above 140 (I think), you get disconnected. Period. You have like 10 seconds to stabilize your connection, maybe it just jumps for a second - happens. But bottom line - you cannot use VPN to play on ping zillion anymore.

  • People dont realise that VPNing is actually detrimental to the killer, because it applies a big delay to power usage. Want to throw a hatchet with 500ms ping? Because both wind up and relase are delayed by that amount, throwing hatchets is now effectively 1000ms slower than normal. It gets even worse with killers that stand still during power usage (Spirit, Twins, Pinhead), because they stop moving the moment their client registers the button, not when the server sends back the package.

  • To the people that say, "Just time out anyone with high ping", you dont seem to realise how atrociously bad server coverage across the world is for this game. Alot of highly populated places physically cant get lower than 100ms, because the next server hub is just so far away.

  • tagging @MadLordJack because she asked something similar too. basically OP and thus comments quoting OP were rather... insensitive in terms of someone's location, blaming one place specifically for most high-ping players. Also then people discussing this one location in particular were also edited into nothingness.

  • @ABannedCat said:

Well, then pair people with high ping together. I don't see a reason why someone with ping 10 should suffer and play with someone with 500. It's not my fault they can't get proper connection.

That's why I love Tarkov's solution so much. They don't give a ######### - you have bad connection? Boo-hoo, fix it, if you want to play.

  • Server-Side Hit Validation doesn't exist. I'm still seeing high ping killers get unfair hits, that they often are even shocked by it. Next time you get a fake hit, check if The Killer was streaming and watch to compare. The pallet validation was great initially, but now it feels like back to the old days of pallet hits. It was hilarious to watch all the killer streamers crying about being denied hits (they weren't entitled to in the first place) within hours of it going live; meanwhile, Survivors have been dealing with fake hits since day one of the game. That's the real issue; Killer mains are so accustomed to years of free and fake hits that Behaviour is capitulating and implemented a very modest version of validation to appease them. They need to be stricter on validation or kick players with high ping out of the game. It's not fair to always favor very high ping killer at the expense of the Survivor. It's unfun to get struck by high latency killers.
