  • They've said in a Q&A they're testing a 4 second base transition speed and self-care skillchecks no longer waking people up, as well as less fog in the dream world so it's easier for Freddy to see. If these buffs go through he'd probably be upper mid-tier.

I don't think the game being so 1vs1-able was intended. That was an unintended consequence of more skilled, obsessive players uncovering a meta playstyle and perk combination that made them stronger than intended.

Of course not. The level of viability 1vs1 is at is insane. Like I said: You should be outplayed by the survivor, not outran. AKA jukes and stealth. Which is why I like the Nurse: She's the worst killer when it comes to stealthy plays. Have you ever noticed the best-skilled survivors are the ones that break LoS and just randomly disappear? (Please answer I actually want your opinion on that question)

This is taken directly from deadbydaylight.com
"Stealth, smarts and discretion is key if you’re playing as a Survivor. You see the world in third-person and have the advantage of a wider field of view. If you don’t fear an adrenaline rush when the Killer walks right by as you hide in the grass – Survivor is your pick"

Man, this isn't even the case at all. This game hardly supports stealthed play, and it's sad. I want less viability to 5 minute chases, harder chases but easier ways to escape. If you think about it: The Easiest way to play survivor right now is to run around a piece of wood until its broken and you get time to run to another one. What even.........................................

Maybe the OP is right when this game supports stealth and not so chased-based. But as it stands, she's put on the pedestal because of the current nature of the game.

I agree completely that the game would be better if survivors went down pretty quickly unless they outplayed and lost the killer, but the devs have been making stealth worse and worse with perks like BBQ, killers like the Doctor and Freddy, and the scoring and ranking systems which don't reward stealth. Feels like a monumental task, to turn the game into a stealth game.

Again people overrate Nurse . Mediocore Nurse is not stronger than any killer . Don't rely on looping every time , god damn it .

A mediocre Nurse is stronger than any other killer unless they're played by an absolute expert. Looping is the game. The devs have been making stealth less appealing with every update.

  • Feng Min. May switch to Kate, but I'm not sure, and even if I do it won't be for a while. Lots of grind and I just finished leveling up Min all the way.

@The_Manlet Hopefully Freddy will get something because currently he's just a joke and a laughing stock to high ranked survivors. I just have one question, do you think my rework would make him slightly better?

Just about any rework would be better than how he works now. It's pretty unimaginative. But at least we know they're planning to buff him and are even testing specific buffs that they're willing to share with us. Hopefully this buff will happen in the coming balance update and not over a year after he got nerfed.

  • She has the highest skill floor and highest skill cap, but she isn't that hard to learn at a basic level, just harder than the others, and a mediocre Nurse is more powerful than most other killers even when played by pros. But yeah, it takes a lot of time, effort and natural talent to become an expert with the Nurse, and at that point you become unstoppable. Overpowered. Broken. Because that's what the Nurse is, she's broken. She just ignores all the mechanics in the game and does whatever she wants, with her only limitations being player skill. Other killers are limited by the mechanics of the game and have inherently lower potential.

Nurse is actually the only killer who is in control of a chase. Every other killer is at a disadvantage and can only react to survivor mistakes while looping, except for the Huntress who can 50/50 certain loops. Nurse is the only killer in the power role. The other killers are reactionary.

  • Unless the survivors are really, really bad, it's impossible for most killers to win without camping or tunneling. The Wraith is not a Nurse or even a Hillbilly. He barely has the ability to get a good survivor on a hook in the first place, let alone catch him from full health 3 times along with his friends.

  • I think we'd all like a total rework to Freddy, but that's not likely. A buff is the most we can hope for. You're basically asking for a new killer at this point.

  • Boil Over and Windows of Opportunity are trash. Dance With Me is good if paired with Lithe. When survivors have perks as overpowered as Sprint Burst or Decisive Strike, anything weaker is going to seem like it's trash.

  • Once the update hits I'm going to be running Lithe + Dance With Me to lose the killer.

  • While I'm all for more licensed killers, we just had three in a row, so I'd prefer they wait a while before adding more. I'd like the next few to be original. And buff Freddy first!

I main freddy, he is an end game killer. The emblem system isn't kind to his playstyle, but I believe if they add a minus 3 percent movement speed to survivors who are asleep it will help. Then roll out more as needed. Not all killers will be competitively viable but freddy is an end game sweeper at most, so it's important for people to keep this in mind when thinking of buffs. I run black box/class photo with remember me/enduring/bbq n chilli, noed and always four man pretty much on console. Can sub enduring with dying light and a toss a mori in for another play.

If a killer needs addons or even a mori in order to function then they aren't viable.

  • Huntress by far. Nice design, Fun to play, fun to play against, and strong but not broken like the Nurse. Very high skill curve.

    QUESTION FROM SUL-FURIK
So we've heard about Freddy getting changes the past few streams..

Any update on how that is going? And if so, what changes are you making to him?

    ANSWER
We are testing a few ideas to potentially add to the Mid-Chapter patch release. Warning, this is only in testing phase, might not be implemented

*Removing Self-care skillchecks from the wake-up action
*Base power to sleep the survivors from 7 sec to 4 sec (modifications to the block addons)
*Reduce the Dream world effects for both sides

    SOURCE: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/2479/reddit-q-a-june-4-2018#latest

That sounds fantastic. Without self-care skillchecks, survivors would have to heal themselves much more slowly or find a generator to wake themselves up, which exposes them to ambush shenanigans since Freddy has a smaller terror radius. And with a 4 second dream transition it may be possible to get that free hit, at least some of the time, and lessen his dependence on addons. But what do they mean by reducing the dream world effects? Do they mean less fog?

  • Ruin needs a buff, both in terms of what the perk does and in terms of how totems and hex perks work in general, but more importantly, Ruin shouldn't be required. Ruin is currently a band-aid for bad game balance. Killers need Ruin just to stand the slightest chance of winning, and that's not good. They shouldn't be required to sacrifice a perk slot for a paid DLC perk just to stand a shot at winning because without Ruin at least three generators will be completed before the first hooking unless you're playing the three killers that are usually considered viable.

  • @newduls said:
the freedy fix is indeed easy.

No wake up from missed skill checks. Done. Wake up can only be achieved by hook/ally/healed while down.

That would make him totally overpowered. He'd be able to easily sleep everyone and then just enjoy his 50% reduced generator and heal speed while having wallhacks on everyone. If someone gets off the hook he just needs to be nearby and can sleep them again. And even if it didn't make him overpowered, and just rose him to mid-tier since his chase game is awful, he'd still be even less fun to play against.

    @RemoveSWF said:
If it took one week to nerf him, it could take one week to buff him. They just don't want to. BHVR hates killers. This is a survivor game.

Selling a killer at launch and then ruining him one week later should be regarded as false advertising and thievery. Buyers thought they were getting one thing and then it was changed to something else.

Oh, and we want the proper Robert Englund version of Freddy, not the crappy remake Freddy.

I think the reason they don't want to buff Freddy is that they understand, at least on some level, that he is very poorly designed and is easily the worst killer they've added to the game in terms of design quality. He isn't fun to play against and is very simple to play. He relies on cheap gimmicks instead of mechanics with depth and a skill curve. Buffing him would just result in Freddy being even more overpowered at low ranks and more annoying at high ranks. The only way to truly fix Freddy is to rework him from the ground up, a full on Cube and then some, but the amount of work and money that would require could be spent making another killer which can be sold for money. They already got your money with Freddy, so he's a very low priority, just like Wraith only received some basic, common sense quality of life improvements after a year and a half of begging for buffs. There's no financial incentive to give more love to already released killers when they could be making more content to sell. They'd rather just sweep Freddy under the rug.

actually hate true. lol too toxic for me

How is he toxic? This is a guy who refuses to camp or tunnel even when playing the weakest killers because he finds it to be, "unfun" and wants to be "fair".

  • Yes, the chase mechanics, perks and just about everything in the game favours the survivors. Nurse, Hillbilly and Huntress are considered the only good killers because they're the only killers with good chasing potential and the ability to negate or minimize pallets. If the killer can't hook people in good time, he loses, and most killers can't hook people in good time because most pallets are safe zones.

  • No game is going to act as serious competition for DbD because they lack the pseudo-competitive nature and deep progression system (that is, the ever-evolving grind and addition of new perks) that keeps the game running. Games like Last Year and Hide or Die will have small devoted playerbases like Friday the 13th.

  • I'll just buy it the old fashioned way. If I have enough shards to unlock both characters the next time there is a DLC, maybe I'll take that route. Maybe not.

  • They're never going to move the game away from looping and teabagging and towards stealth gameplay. That ship sailed with the Doctor, and he's not the only one that counter stealth. And then you have the Emblem system making it almost impossible to pip with stealthy play. No, the grave has been dug too deep. All we can hope for is a kind of looping that is less in the control of the survivor. More mindgameable, unsafe pallets and loops so good killers can get hits in instead of being at the mercy of the survivor.

On a more serious note; I just want it to be balanced and not a free escape.

I don't use DS, never have and never will but free escape? Dude, it's a one use perk and it's not even guaranteed as you have to beat the skill check too. You use it, you lose it. Killers act like people can use it forever and they can't. It's like everyone forgets this, it's the concept of high-risk, high-reward. You can use it but only once and then it's gone and you're down a perk the rest of the match.

It's extremely rare for anyone to miss a decisive strike skillcheck. The people who use the perk are using it every match, and they've gotten quite good at it. There is no risk whatsoever. It's also not once per match, because it's the sort of perk that becomes more powerful the more people are using it, like the old version of Borrowed Time. 4 Decisive Strikes is basically a win for the survivors.

Self-care is really only a big deal against Freddy. Killers have Nurse's Calling and now a new Clown perk to help counter it. Sprint Burst and Decisive Strike, on the other hand, are completely broken, with Decisive Strike being a punch in the face to the killer and Sprint Burst being another get out of jail free card that also hard-counters the abilities of certain killers such as the Pig. Adrenaline isn't that bad, though it can be nasty when an entire SWF group are running it.

Sprint Burst and Decisive Strike absolutely need to be reworked, but I think those are the only truly broken survivor perks.

Selfcare is strong no matter what killer you face, it makes this game a solo-viable and this shouldnt be a thing in my opinion.

While Self-care has certainly subverted the intended game design and the fact that every single survivor runs Self-care if they have access to it is alarming, can you imagine the game without it? Killers would pretty much win by default. And at least wounding someone wastes a lot of their time by requiring them to heal themselves.

Please, killers think literally any viable perk survivors have in their arsenal is OP. There's a guy in another thread here saying frickin' Iron Will is OP for gods sake. Some will never admit it but the truth is they won't be happy until survivors are stripped of all perks. Funny you never hear any survivors complain about bloodlust even though that was never originally in the game and it essentially made any player, no matter their skill level, competent against good survivors.

Bloodlust is a band-aid meant to prevent survivors from being able to infinitely loop the killer around certain obstacles. A band-aid for bad level design and hitbox issues allowing for looping. Bloodlust does almost nothing other than allow the killer to hit you if he loops you around the same pallet for over half a minute.

  • Neat idea, but what would their power be?

  • Camping is part of the game and many killers rely on it by design. Very few killers have the ability to chase someone, get them on a hook quickly and then race off to the other side of the map to do it again to someone else. Trying to do this will result in a loss every single time while playing the weaker killers. Tunneling, or at the very least using camping to trade the rescuer for the rescued and get another easy hook while another runs off wounded is the only way most killers can win against competent survivors.

If you play, say, Myers, the best thing you can do after hooking someone is to hide nearby, notice the rescuer coming, pop EW3 and down him before he can do the unhook, and then just camp both the hooked person and the downed player. This will slow generator progress to a crawl. Trying to race off to the other side of the map will make you lose.

  • The difference between DbD and F13 is that only a handful of F13 players play the meta. Most of the playerbase plays low tier characters and isn't so great at the game, whereas DbD is full of people who take the game seriously to the point where they play Claudette for a camouflage advantage instead of playing their favourite character. So while Jason is actually just as weak as a Wraith, this doesn't become evident in 99% of matches.

  • Sounds like he's superior to the average killer but still not viable against decent SWF.

I'll trust when I see signs of that Freddy rework. But the real reason I want all killers to be viable is so that my survivor experience is more varied. Nothing but Nurse, Billy and Huntress past mid-ranks, because when it isn't them you win the majority of the time.

Freddy's lack of strength pains me, as A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my favorite movies, and he doesn't need a lot to become stronger. I do have some ideas to make him more bearable, but on the whole he needs a full-blown Rework. I don't think we're going to get that though, as they'd have to essentially completely renegotiate the killer, which could take ages to do.

The biggest buff Freddy needs though is for Self Care to not be able to wake Survivors up. That one small change would change him dramatically as he could actually be a decent Stall/Ambush killer, like The Pig. Aside from that I'd argue that Dream Transition should prevent Totems at least, but then again I could write a whole essay about fixing Freddy. As it is we'll just have to hope for the Devs to pull through with a buff.

That is true. If you couldn't wake yourself up through self-care than you'd have to either heal at half speed in a safe spot or find a generator or awake survivor to wake you up before self-healing in a safe spot at the normal speed, but Freddy has a lower terror radius and could ambush you on that generator after letting you get away. This change alone would make him a little more viable and scarier. There are many things you could do to make him more powerful without completely reworking him. Right now, his autoaim will prioritize awake survivors over sleeping ones even though he can't hit awake survivors. Why? Because the devs don't care. This is heavily exploited by survivors to prevent Freddy from hitting people at no cost to the survivors.

There is other equally stupid stuff like skillchecks waking you up even during the dream transition, so Freddy often has to sleep them twice in a row because they wake up the second he tags them, before they're even truly asleep.

Change the 7 second sleep timer to 6. Remove the slight reduces speed from his paint brush add on

Let his Blood Warden perk be 90 second limit.

This alone would strengthen him decently.

That would barely do anything at all. Freddy is trash because it's easy to wake up, and so being asleep is not a threat, and he has no tools to help in a chase. And then on top of that he has massive weaknesses that only he suffers from. Freddy needs to be completely reworked harder than the Doctor was, not given a minor buff.

I agree. I've gotten to rank1 as freddy. I'm with you. I'm trying to be conservative.

THey should make the sleeping surv's auras range not as far then. That would help. Make it 24 meters

Now that's just a nerf. He's already trash, he doesn't need to be even worse. He should be completely remade from the ground up because he's the biggest design failure since Decisive Strike.

It's because the grind is a large part of the reason why people play the game so much, and when you kill a survivor, especially early on, you're screwing them out of bloodpoints. If it weren't for the grind they'd get a lot less salty when they lose and be a lot less antagonistic. Survivors barely get any BP even when they win, so making them lose is a personal attack on them.

Aww, and the average match lasts a whole few minutes! So awful! Its a "personal attack" to make the survivor lose by camping/tunneling!

Tell me, when is it a "personal attack" on the killer? When the killer's hex is immediately removed? Is that a "personal attack" on the killer? How about when the killer is followed around by a player with a flashlight, constantly hounded every time they pick up a survivor, and on a map like cornfield forced to drop multiple times. Is that a "personal attack" on the killer? How about when 'cheat with friends' means the first person dead reveals all perks and add-ons of the killer to the other players, so now they can play against nurses calling, not worry about NOED or break all hexes if NOED, etc, is that a "personal attack" on the killer?

See what I mean by entitlement? This is a competition. The killer is supposed to force the action. Sometimes the killer has a good match, sometimes the survivor. All this victim language by survivors is absurd- with "personal attack" for "making them lose" being one of the more hilarious I've come across. Thanks for that.

Breaking the totem, no. The rest, absolutely. Hell, flashlight blinding is an attack on the player himself, blinding him in real life if he's in a dark room, which is a good idea when you want to actually see that crouching Claudette.

  • They seemed to have rushed Freddy out the gate without thinking him through. His animations weren't even finished when he was released. He's definitely the worst destined killer in the game, and not just the weakest (though he is that too). The devs seem content to just leave him to rot and pretend that he was never added to the game.

  • If it's true that he actually said that, then I'm astounded. I'm sure plenty of people have phobias of cannibals, but there's Leatherface. There are also people who are quite afraid of child molesters, but Freddy is in the game. And he's a clown in this game too!

  • As a killer? When I play Myers, probably Lerys. Otherwise I don't really have a favourite map. My least favourite map would be Badham Preschool or any of the Swamp maps, but especially Grim Pantry. That map should never have been made, the devs knew no one liked Pale Rose. As a survivor, my favourite map is by far Rotten Fields. Almost nothing but corn. Lots of room to hide, and Lithe is good here because you can jump a window and run into the corn and then Urban Evade away. After that, probably the Asylum. My least favourite map? I'm not sure. Maybe Mother's Dwelling, because I don't understand how to loop on it and most of the generators are exposed.

What they need to change is the speed reduction while uncloaking.
They made QoL changes, so he would be great at tracking. But the speed reduction while uncloaking turns cloaking mid chase into a auto loss.

Right now, the Wraith is forced to stay visible until the survivor is hooked. He can´t break chases like the devs evisioned him.

The Devs asked for feedback and made a big steam thread about it and …. ignored everything said.
Literally every feedback wanted the Wraith to be more powerful in CHASES. Make his cloak so that it is useful to recloak and uncloak during chases.
And they did the exact opposite.
They gone the "ambusher" route again. And we -the player- already know that "ambusher" are in general WEAK.
Ambushes need time to prepare and set up and in a game where the killer is on a tight timemanagement schedule this is poison.

Beside the QoL changes, that should had been from the get go (gen- and palletbreakage, locker search while cloaked), the Wraith Cube was a big let down.

To make him a viable ambush killer, he should be able to hit while being cloaked. This would uncloak him and everything else applies. But that would be an ambush killer.

I'd make it so that he can only hit them while cloaked if they are in a certain health state. Probably the healthy state. Then he has to uncloak to hit them again while they are injured.

Essentially what it comes down to is the devs have no control over or responsibility for people using voice chat externally. Sure, it gives them a communication advantage, but when I play killer the way I see it is you win some, you lose some. I've had as many utter defeats as wins playing swf, although probably more wins than I get solo queue. And as other people have said, the game will die if they remove the ability to play online with friends. It almost died once before, only about six months into release. People can complain all they want about swf but at the end of the day it's a core part of the game and it's what keeps a lot of people playing. And honestly toxicity is a problem that should be dealt with in its own right. Treating symptoms won't affect the root cause of the issue, and toxic people will be toxic whether they're playing with friends or not.

What happened almost six months after the game released? That would be November or December 2016, right? I was playing then and nothing seemed wrong. That was around when the Hag was added, right?

  • There are no killer perks that counter Decisive Strike. In fact, most survivor perks can't be countered. You can make the skillcheck harder but it won't stop survivors from hitting the skillcheck. You can run Enduring but it will barely make any difference. You can run Iron Grasp or Agitation but they'll still get to 30% especially on bad maps or with bodyblocking. More importantly, killers really can't afford to run those perks. They have to run Ruin, a paid DLC perk, just to stand the slightest chance of winning unless they're a really good Nurse. Killer perks are dictated to them by the limitations of their killer and the fact that the developers fix bad game design issues with killer perk bandaids like Ruin and Blood Warden. Meanwhile survivors can run anything they want with Self-Care being the only perk that feels mandatory.

Yes, Decisive Strike should be a once-in-a-match thing. Not a four-times-in-a-match thing. Any amount of bodyblocking, being downed in a bad place or just being in a bad map will guarantee 4 unearned escapes per match, which adds an insane amount of chase time and translates to an automatic survivor victory against anything but a Nurse.

The game is already balanced around solo players. If you did this you would need to considerably buff the Killer to be able to take into account teamcomms, like in Deathgarden. But that would require an entire game overhaul. Perhaps wait until Deathgarden is out and just play that?

So it´s better to have externa third party tools, which give people a significant advantage over others. Than having a game intern programm and balance around it?

It's not possible to balance the game around voice communication. It's entirely designed around a lack of communication even down to perks like Kindred and Knock Out. You could seriously nerf the survivors and buff the killers and give everyone voice chat, but that's a game overhaul and still screws over the people who didn't want to talk, and haven't been doing so for two years. The only proper solution is segregation so killers can just avoid SWF altogether, with an incentive for them to play with them.

Then why do the devs tolerate the external third party tools that give an significant advantage over others?
Because that´s against the rules. No one applies them, but it´s clearly an infration.

Because the game would die if they actually stopped people from using external voice communication. When the game launched it didn't even have SWF, and people were writing bad reviews and refunding the game because it didn't let them play with their friends outside of a crappy private match mode that was far more basic than it is now, doesn't give bloodpoints and requires 5 people to enjoy. SWF was something they rigged together with duct-tape very quickly post release. It didn't even work properly at first, it was so buggy it was almost unusable.

The devs are pretty amateur and thought they could sell a multiplayer game with teamwork in 2016 that doesn't let you play with your friends. Letting them play with their friends but banning them if the system detects that they're running Discord or something is absurd. The game would die overnight.

Then introduce internal voice com and balance around it.
Instead of having indicators for every perk the killer runs.
There are no surprises anymore. Killer has a hex perk? You get a notification.
NOED or MYC is active? Notification.
    UP? Notification

Devs are desperatly trying to balance around SWF with voice coms. The game wasn´t designed around it. Many perks are useless if survivors use voice com. But the devs keep buffing solo survivors to the lvl of SWF groups.
Right now, the killer perks could be freely visible before the trial, it wouldn´t make much of a difference.

To balance around voice communication would be to completely redesign the game. There are entire perks designed with the intent that there is no voice communication, and many killer powers such as the Trapper are rendered moot through it. You're basically asking for Dead by Daylight 2. These jokers couldn't do anything good with Wraith after a year and a half of begging.

At least he is better than Freddy

    He isn't

Wraith is absolutely better than Freddy. Wraith has a nearly worthless power with no downsides. Freddy has a nearly worthless power with tons of downsides. Wraith can completely ignore his power, Freddy cannot. Wraith can camp and defend objectives, Freddy cannot. If Wraith is naked, then Freddy has been flayed.

Ambush killers are weak because they're envisioned around sneaking up to get the first hit in for free, and then chasing, worse than most killers, but the target is already wounded so the chase is shorter. This playstyle is completely invalidated by Sprint Burst, which guarantees that you will be able to always find a safe pallet to loop around. Try running something like Lithe or Dead Hard instead of Sprint Burst and you'll be surprised at how much you suddenly fear Myers and Pig. Sprint Burst is a broken perk, arguably more overpowered than Decisive Strike.

  • Wraith needs a complete rework. A killer who can only cloak and nothing else is worthless. You could just play Pig for pretty much the same effect, not that she doesn't get hard-countered by sprint burst just as badly if not worse.

Wraith is a relic of what this game was back in the summer of 2016, when a killer's gimmick could be that he cloaks and finds people easier and that's it. He's old and tired in 2018, hell, he was old and tired by the end of 2016. You could buff him, but he'll always be low tier and uninteresting as long as his design philosophy is that he cloaks and uncloaks with nothing else. Not at all like Freddy, who could actually be mid-tier with just a few changes, but would still be cancer to play against.

I don't think they want to openly admit the balance issues caused by SWF and balance around it. That's a monumental task, and they won't even do anything about Freddy, or Wraith, two years later.
Easiest way to balance for SWF is to make it a separate mode with a separate ranking system, that still gives bloodpoints, and gives bonus bloodpoints to the killer or just slows generator progress and reduces numbers of pallets or something based on how many survivors are SWF. But even that would take more work than just ignoring the problem and telling people to go play Civilization.

But points alone won´t give killers an incentive to play against SWF. We all know how toxic a 4 man SWF group can be.
The game has to be fun for both sides. Only few killers enjoy facing SWF death squads.

They're less likely to be toxic when the killers can choose to avoid playing with them with ease without having to check their profiles and choose whether to dodge the lobby.
