Ponzi scheme is:
Invest in my company and then I will give you profit. But the profit actually does not come from company business but from new investors.
Bitcoin is not really that.
There are many things that don't have real value and their value comes only from what people are willing to pay for it. E.g. paintings.
you should look up a study on the Bitconnect incident, which was a big ponzi scheme to do with crypto.

I understand the desire for an "unregulated" currency. However at the moment cryptocurrency has regressed to a "Gas Burn Standard" and isn't sustainable.
(######### it's not even like a Gold Standard where it's a trade of a material, it's literally a standard based on the consumption of one, "gas" is ######### limited)
If we got to the point that miners were using renewable energy rather than cheaper fossil fuels, that would be a more sustainable practice. But fossil fuels are just so much cheaper at the moment for a greater short-term profit.
well until people get together and vote out those in power who enable these corporations to run such unsustainable practises I don't think we'll ever see them stop. The only solution to the fossil fuel problem, is by having our politicians pass laws regulating the consumption of fuels and mandating the usage of green energy.
However people are either too ignorant of what to do, or aren't willing because of the impact it will have on their lifestyle in the short term. It's a really sad predicament isn't it?

Yup.
And IMO the IRL scarcity of gasoline should be much more than a ######### JPEG.
But that is the beauty and curse of currency, especially unregulated ones.
"it being unregulated makes it better, and ok to consume more energy!" said every criminal ever.

Oh, right, then factor in the environmental impact of burning ~5 gallons of gas per NFT and each of their transactions, and that Boss Protocol is looking at creating 10,000 NFTs (likely on-demand) to start with.
Just the creation of the Hellraiser NFTs will consume enough energy to power an Irish household for 83 years.

Ok, here's the thing. The idea is that it's a limited collectable that may or may not pay off (depending if you have another sucker to bye it from you). The scarcity of an NFT is completely artificial, and the content that you "own" with an NFT is easily mass produced, so yes, I do consider it a scam.
*pyramid scheme intensifies*

Great, now one of my favourite movie franchises have sold out to them. Welp, guess it's time for me to uphold my moral integrity and no longer associate with anything new brought to the Saw world. At least I can enjoy everything released so far as they were made before the NFT deal. But anything new from Saw will not be getting my support.

My guess is that DBD created the models for the game. The license owners could have just hired some 3d artist to create the pinhead models, but since the models were already done for DBD, they just reused those.
in which case why not say to the community. "the models we created are given to the liscence holders. should they choose to use them for NFTs is on there part." Why does BHVR need to express that they are the ones responsible for making the Pinhead model an NFT? It just doesn't add up in my mind. BHVR as far as I can see is far from innocent in this scenario.

That was miscommunication. And even if not, nobody really needs to know what it even means they adapted it. (E.g. Exported it JPEG?)
of course we inherently don't know what it means. however, given what we do know. that BHVR intended the assets to be used for NFTs, I will assume that, adapted means the assets were created with the ultimate intention of being used for an NFT. I think that's a safe assumption, would you agree?

What would be your reaction to this:
"Sorry for the miscommunication. We worked together with the license owners to create Pinhead models and now they started to sell NFTs of these models. Check it out if you are into NFTs, here is the link to their site."
that would be ok, however that goes under the implication BHVR didn't make models specifically for use as NFTs. Which isn't the reality of the situation. As they stated they adapted the models for use as NFTs.

It's not even they lied as to why I want a refund. Rather the omission of information that PAE would be involved with NFTs. Information of which BHVR knew about prior to the launch of Pinhead yet withheld from us until now. Had I and many others known our money would go to supporting a company that is involved with NFTs, we would not have bought Pinhead.

I don't even try to ask how do you know it was not a main concern.
What I am curious on the other hand is what would you like to hear from BHVR. Could you write an example tweet?
how about something along the lines of
"we see and understand your concerns with our involvement with NFTs. We apologise for any miscommunication, and our omission of information regarding the subject. We at BHVR do not support NFTs, nor do we condone any actions involving them on part of our partners at PAE and BossProtocol. Any content related to NFTs is exclusively to do with our partners and we have no direct involvement with them. They are free to use the assets we created for DBD as they see fit as the rightful copyright owners."
not that statements we got where the promote and endores the NFTs, along with saying they worked to adapt assets from DBD specifically for NFTs.

You’re saying that the gaming industry, the automobile industry, the food industry, to give just three examples, have an insignificant effect on the environment? If that’s the case, what have you against NFTs?
Those industries don’t exist just for the sake of it, they provide goods/services to the consumer for a profit. You. Your neighbour. Your friend from work, all part of the collective supporting and being provided for by the very corporations and industries you profess to oppose.
That’s why this NFT controversy is being labelled as “woke.” The people creating the controversy don’t stand by their principles. They happily indulge in a plethora of activities and services that, in their own view, harm the environment every day.
no, you've completely misread what I said. I stated that we as individual consumers have an insignificant effect, and we need to hold the companies we consume from accountable. If companies were to beginning making a shift to green energy, there wouldn't be this problem. And in fact, it isn't an issue in the automobile industry as a majority of those companies are making the shift to sustainable and green energy. however people continue to believe they are the issue behind global warming, because that's what corporations want you to believe. You are one of the people who seem to believe that those who participate in a lifestyle they have no control over are at fault. Which is exactly the reason why we're so ######### as a species right now. You need to start realising we aren't the issue for partaking in the activities. But rather those giving the activities to us are the issue.

"you participate in activities you have no control over or means to change. that makes you a hypocrite!" I mean, how more desperate to prove people wrong can you be? I dont get how people think like that. Does context mean nothing to them?
-
their game is probably crashing because apparently nobody tested the game for crashes or stress tested servers. Nice update BHVR, most of your players cant even play it because you force DC penalties on them despite the crashes being your fault :)

Those individuals are part of a collective. That’s the point isn’t it? You’re supporting and utilising the things that in your view, have a negative impact on the environment. Every game you buy a game, every time you check your Twitter, or pay your electricity bill, drive your car, get on a bus or on a plane, etc.
and it has such an insignificant effect. What people should do, and what I do, is use your damned right to vote. vote out the people who enable big corporations to burn so much fossil fuel. Or help invest in new green technologies. This "oh well you do X, X and X" is so impossibly ignorant to the bigger issues. If the leading contributors to global warming didn't produce as much as they do, we wouldn't be in our predicament. The consumers aren't to blame, it's governing bodies and corporations.
-
@El_Gingero said:
There’s much hypocrisy. All the people talking about global warming own computers, play on video games, have phones, internet, 5g, cars, use public transport, so on so forth.
yes, but the amount a single person contributes to global warming is inconsequential to that of big corporations. Your entire lifes contribution to global warming is equal to a single second of contribution from the worlds industry. Stop trying to blame individuals, and instead realise we aren't the issue. It's the companies we enable that are.

@pseudechis said:
It is a bit of overhype.
For a more moderate approach basically I enjoy DBD and will probably keep playing it for as long as I do.
Its unfortunate that BHVR has decided to sign agreements that permit open use of content that may include NFT's which are just ######### terrible when it comes to how they are set up, unregulated, often scammy, exploitable and grossly energy hungry making NFT markets one giant financial, environmental and moral trash pile.
Looks like the agreement involving NFT's is associated with the hellraiser expansion so I'll probably not purchase it due to that. I'll voice my general displeasure on that and vote with my wallet and that's all people really can do. I don't think that's an unreasonable response.
Anything else is a just a grotesque overreaction, common for the internet and to be expected.
If BHVR continue to sign agreements that promote the use of NFT's as incentives to get ingame material then you wouldn't be overly dramatic to say well that's a shame I'm not gonna support this anymore because I don't think its a good thing.
Does continuing to play because of NFT's make you the devil?... no
Does boycotting because of NFT's make you the hero of the people?... no
There are far more exploitative and destructive things in this world to be angry about. If folk were truly "making their stand" then this is the smallest weakest stand you could possibly make. Also its largely meaningless because you can just go back on your outrage and play anyway.
Its kind of like signing a facebook petition against something, its completely meaningless but it makes people feel like they contributed so they don't have to feel bad about living comfortably while burning fossil fuel that week.
Online outrage is the wet noodle of dissent and most companies know this.
the difference between this and other problems with the world is that, this is something the community may actually have the ability to influence. The community if they try may be able to make BHVR realise "ayo, we ######### up"
It isn't that easy in our day to day lives. As large corporations are so wealthy and powerful that the average consumer has absolutely no power over them. The only thing we as consumers can do is vote out the people in power who allow big corporations to continue their unsustainable ways.
You should also consider we as a species don't have an option but to use fossil fuels for a lot of our daily indulgences. As there haven't been any green energy alternatives implemented. So saying ######### like "you use cars and consume electricity" is so incredibly nieve as most people don't have ability to change their lifestyle to a way that conforms with their beliefs.
Another factor is the insignificance of the average consumers contribution to global warming. The whole "doing your part" ploy is merely big corporations trying to point the finger at us, and make consumers feel like they're the ones at fault, redirecting the blame from themselves. If you, as a consumer for the rest of your life were to reduce your carbon emissions to 0, for the rest of your entire life, you would save the environment one whole second worth of emissions compared to the emissions of big industry.
The argument "you should do your part" or calling people hypocrites is far from the truth. The video I linked sums up the issues with global warming very well. And I implore you to watch it. Any way back to topic. The idea that people are "grotesquely overreacting" is a horrible mindset, given the passion people are showing could be put to pressuring BHVR to retract themselves from this whole agreement. BHVR isn't big enough to shrug off the business they could lose providing the community were able to band together.
The collective viewership of content creators, forum users and social media users, along with the people who catch wind of this through news outlets such as IGN and I'm sure Jim Sterling will easily have enough influence providing they care enough to make a statement against BHVR and actually pull through with the boycott.
I for one have deleted the game, do I expect my contribution to actually help in making BHVR stop their support of NFTs? No. Is it a piece of mind that will help me sleep at night? Yes. Another big issue with this scandal is that BHVR not only came out in support of NFTs, but also mislead and deceived the very same community defending them. They omitted very important information from both staff and consumers which would have dramatically decreased their sales of the Hellraiser chapter. That is not a company I want to show any support for, either by giving them money, or by playing their game.
I wish more people would realise this and come together as a community.

Don't forget this is a survivor dlc, so that naturally brings less people (not trying to sound biased, but survivors are just skins and new skins arent that likely to bring in as many new players as new characters)
have you seen the amount of people simping for the new survivor? I also wouldnt be surprised to know a majority of the community play survivor over killer. So it's not a stretch to say the numbers would be comparable to a killer release. Also take into consideration the praise BHVR received for the patch before the whole NFT situation. There won't be any slope due to the NFTs. 95% of the people upset already forgot.
or maybe they've moved on because they realise it's probably a fruitless endeavour given the naivety of the community at large, combined with the ignorance of BHVR after this stunt. I've deleted the game and wont get it back unless BHVR retract their stance on NFTs, and you can say "oh you're not contributing anything, you're just a sheep and will accomplish nothing" It wont have anything bearing on my conscience that I'm supporting a company that clearly doesn't care about the environment, nor does it seem to care about the illicit activities associated with NFTs and blockchains. The continued ignorance of both the community and BHVR make it clear to most rational people it wont matter. So I'll take my piece of mind tyvm. However, if people continue to support the company that is promoting NFTs, I don't want to be a part of that. And I think maybe more of the playerbase should educate themselves.
Before I forget, since I got a little passionate and offtopic. While yes right now there is no downward slope, the current player count is much lower than other dlc drops. given other dlc's had peaks of 75k+ players on steam. Providing you consider the concurrent player count trend over the last 3 to 6 months, you'll see it is on the downward.
-
I guarantee you the people who said they wont play aren't playing. using the drop of a new dlc to "disprove" them is so nieve, as a lot of players who dont hold an opinion will be playing the place of those who left. However, it's entirely possible once the excitement of a new dlc wear off, it'll be a down, down slope.

-
I dont get the "oh you are all just sheep" mentality. Is it so hard to believe people can be well versed in such a controversial and impactful topic?
Same goes for the "why have you not cared about it until now?" argument. Most likely people haven't cared because it hasn't affected a part of their life in a way they either realise or can do anything about.
As people who love DBD, we dont want to be associated with NFTs because of their negative impact, and as a community have the power to stop BHVR from continuing with this awful decision. Is it so bad to be passionate? And to want the best for the company behind our favourite game?
-
because the people at the top don't think it's profitable to focus on making the game enjoyable. Does solving the hacking issue make them money? no. There's literally no other reason with how great the outcry has been to solve the issue.

Because it’s funny watching you guys seethe over something so incredibly minor. Okay BHVR got f’d by park avenue big deal. You’re gonna quit the game because an outside license had a requirement that BHVR had no choice in? Car manufacturers make up waaaay more in environmental damage than NFTs will ever do so I guess just cancel everyone who drives now? Point is, it’s a dumb thing to be crying and uninstalling over esp when we all know you’re gonna come back.
BHVR had a choice to not agree to the licence agreement, that's what licence agreements are for... And yes while car companies produce a lot of the worlds pollution, they have a positive impact on the world, cars and vehicles are extraordinarily important to daily life, and they aren't involved in illegal practises like cryptos are. the "just don't buy it" mentality is so nieve to the issue at hand. First of, many of the players have already bought the Pinhead DLC, because the information about NFTs was withheld from us. And we know it isn't new as BHVR said they've been working on it for months. Doubly so when they even WITHHELD THE INFORMATION FROM THEIR OWN STAFF.
However, the real point is to do with morality. Do you really think it's ok to stay and support a company that promotes the use of NFTs? I for one, do NOT want to play a game run by such people. Especially after they openly deceived the community not even a week ago.
Anybody with a conscience should realise BHVR deserve every bit of hate they're getting right now. Nobody should be supporting the company in the slightest, which includes playing the game, and making ANY ingame purchases.

Cryptocurrencies also create a form of currency that is not monopolized by governments. NFTs provide a way for artists to be able to create and sell artwork digitally in a way that shows authenticity. You see I agree with you, I do. But these things are not black and white. And I'd personally rather not piss of the license holders of PinHead because you know what would actually suck, it would suck to have more than PinHeads lines removed.
if you want a piece of artwork, just go get a commission from a twitter artist. The artist will be able to confirm it's your commission, and that you now own it. Unlike you, I'd gladly piss off the licence holders, and to be frank, I'm ashamed I can't get a refund. Had I known my money would go to support a company behind NFTs I would never have bought Pinhead. What's more important? Some bald white guy with a box in a video game, or your sense of morality?

And why do you feel that they are abhorrent, and what problems do you feel that they cause?
hmm, it's almost like they consume exorbitant amounts of energy that is greater than some countries. they contribute more to global warming than some fully developed countries. a majority of the energy they consume for transactions is wasted energy. NFTs are most commonly attributed to art theft. They're used for ponzi schemes. they cam be pyramid schemes. cryptos are used for many illegal purchases.
The list goes on.

If we care that much about environment, we would all live as Jake does. But I agree that better not to support NFT, at least, we can do that.
the issue with caring about the environment is that there's only so much a single person can do, of which is basically inconsequential. However as a community if we can stop BHVR supporting NFTs, that can go to help. The underlying issue with global warming isnt with consumers, its with corporations who try and shift the blame. So in trying to stop BHVR supporting the NFTs, we can to some small degree help against the growth, while also spreading awareness, which would hopefully lead to action.
