End game chat and the messages I get, the general attitude of the communuty is absolutely toxic. Major turn off for new players. I uninstalled for like 6 months because of it.

You can always just disable chat.

For my part, I just try to say "gg" even if I got completely destroyed, and then move on if I see the chat getting really salty. Take the wins and the losses in stride, compliment others if they were playing well, report players if they are being racist or abusive, and just don't engage with really angry players. Life is too short for that nonsense, and there are better ways for you to use your time and energy. This is general useful advice for all games, not just DBD.

There are game stats for the Xbox version?? Where is it? Is it in the game itself, or the Xbox dashboard UI?

Id be ok with that. I checked this morning and Ive earned 163 million total, not sure how theyd do that without raising the cap to a stupid amount

How do you know how much total BP you've earned? I'm kinda curious about that for myself.

I can see that. I still think it should fall into griefing. This isn't slugging the next to last survivor to draw out the last one. This killer simply slugged both and left us to bleed out. He made absolutely no attempt to even pick either of us up, much less to hang us. So, if BHVR sees no issue in a killer intentionally wasting my time I will simply choose to waste it on a 5 minute ban as opposed to bleeding out in that situation. It may never happen to me again. This is the first time in 2 years I have seen a killer slug every remaining survivor and let them bleed out, but if it does I know what I will do.

To each their own. I'm just explaining the reasonable definition of "holding the game hostage" as it pertains to reportable offenses. The act of bleeding out and dying is intended to bring the game to an end and prevent this from happening. It may take longer than you'd like, but making it shorter would have questionable implications for game strategies.

I do agree, in any case, that the killer you're describing was being a jerk.

While I get where youre coming from thats kind of a slap in the face to those of us who have been p3ing their characters. It would mean I wasted a CRAP TON of BPs. Like...a lot. 10s of millions worth. Which translates to an ungodly amount of time

This is why I think it is a waste of time and BP to prestige. And I get where YOU'RE coming from too, but from my perspective, any major change would need to be reasonably accessible by everyone and not just the narrow few people who have devoted the kind of time you described to prestiging. At the end of the day, it is a video game, not a life accomplishment.

How about this: I think it would be amazing if they enacted a global reset of every character level to 1, and just refunded every BP you've ever spent, so you'd have a massive bank of millions and millions of BP (if you have poured that much time and effort into it), and you would essentially get a "re-roll" by deciding how to reallocate all of it to account for the new prestige system.

  • Holding the game hostage implies that one or more players are prevented from bringing about the game's end without resorting to leaving. Slugged survivors will bleed out, which is intended the put a timer on them and end the match if they are left on the ground -- which means the match will end without anyone needing to disconnect.

Holding the game hostage would be, like, if the killer trapped you in a corner and you could literally not move, and they didn't hit your or move themselves, and just kept you there.

  • The idea that any given action is "toxic" is an invented construct that a bunch of people have chosen to believe. This is an adversarial game; the opponent is going to be trying very hard to complete their objectives while preventing you from doing yours. This includes:

    • Survivors flashlight stunning killers, which is intended use for this item.
    • Survivors pallet looping, and dropping pallets, trying to waste as much of the killer's time as possible.
    • Survivors body-blocking hooks or injured teammates.
    • Survivors completing generators quickly.
    • Survivors bringing strong perks, items, add-ons, and offerings.
    • Killers bringing strong perks, add-ons, and offerings.
    • Killers tricking survivors with mindgames at loops.
    • Killers using their powers to shut down pathways that might be safe vs. other killers.
    • Killers camping the hatch, or camping a three-genned map.
    • Killers slugging survivors.
    • Killers tunneling a really weak link that they know is dead on hook.
    • Killers camping one or more hooked survivors after generators are done/doors are open.

These are all part of normal play. These things are the game, they are the mechanics that constitute Dead by Daylight as a multiplayer game experience. These things are not toxic. Complaining about this stuff is like complaining that throws in fighting games are "cheap" or "dishonorable" or something. Get outta here with that.

If teabagging/crouching, flashlight clicking spam, nodding, or whatever is really all it takes to set you off, this might be the wrong game for you. I cannot fathom letting those kinds of small actions get me so angry that I don't have fun. It just is what it is.

    in 'toxic' Comment by Rydog
  • They need to remove the mash-to-struggle mechanic, and not even give the player the option to suicide in phase 2.

  • Pretty cool idea! Although I could see there being a big problem with what constitutes "looking at the killer." What if they have their camera turned to look behind them but they are running away?

Yes, but when the killer camps all you have to do is gens... does any survivor actually like doing gens?

Do you... like this game? This is a very strange perspective on the main objective that you're supposed to be doing in order to win. Why would you not work on your main objective when the killer is ceding all map control to you by camping?

  • @MiniPisa said:

I think that would turn out slightly OP. Freddy can't teleport to his blood snores so it's different

Blood Snores, what happens when you fall asleep right on top of a Freddy trap!

  • No way, I think the game feels WAY better with new Ruin. It's still massively inconvenient to go up against as a survivor, but it's not a "must-run" perk for killers anymore. I would say Pop Goes the Weasel is the stronger generator regression perk anyway.

Now I just wish they would add BBQ & Chili's BP stacking effect to the killer's base kit, so that it also doesn't feel like a "must-run" perk.

  • I think it would be interesting to try adding a regression effect to gates. That would introduce an element of risk when survivors decide to 99% it.

  • I've definitely gotten back into it post-quarantine. I took a break last November, and just started up again a couple weeks ago. Feels good, but there are also so many frustrating things that still aren't fixed.

  • Re: your first comment, I would not use Self-Care. It is a really inefficient perk that teaches bad habits, which you will then have to unlearn later once you understand the game better. A lot of newbie guides advocate using this perk, but it's one of the worst ways to heal. Bond, which you are already using, is the best healing perk in the game, and it also doubles as a good altruism perk, generator-hunting perk, and killer avoidance perk, since you get a lot of information when you can see what your teammates are doing. I cannot contribute anything meaningful to the game without this perk, and I run it with Spine Chill in every build.

I also suggest Kindred, because it's also amazingly informative and useful after its buff. I actually like it better than Borrowed Time now. An exhaustion perk is also good (Lithe and Sprint Burst are my favorites), or you could use Iron Will because that helps a lot with chases too. Those are my favorite perks to use as survivor, and the combo has gotten me to red ranks, so it can't be all bad!

  • June 14 will be the game's 4th anniversary, so I would guess probably mid-month along with the next chapter update. I hope Gruesome Gateau comes back!

  • Die Hard with a Vengeance chapter confirmed!

  • Tunneling is when the killer develops tunnel-vision for a specific survivor, and pursues them at the expense of all other objectives.

    in Tunneling Comment by Rydog
  • Try flushing your DNS and rebooting your PC. The client was having a random connection error yesterday for me, and that fixed it.

    To flush DNS:

    • Windows Key + R and type the following:
    • cmd
    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /renew
    • ipconfig /flushdns
  • What OP is describing is basically an original character, at that point. The point of having Jason would be to have Jason, not a "just close enough" simulacrum. That's basically what Trapper already is (as is Hillbilly to Leatherface, arguably Legion to Ghostface, Spirit to Ring/Grudge killers, etc.).

FWIW, it seems like the ongoing litigation of the rights to the original movie is inching closer to being settled, one way or another. There hasn't been much movement since mid-February, but that hasn't stopped new Friday the 13th merchandise from being announced. A new board game got announced in April, slated for a summer release. Sooooo maybe there's hope for Jason to be making the rounds in DBD at some point in the future. I think it would be awesome to have a Camp Crystal Lake map (or Camp Forest Green if they must use an alternative name)... and as a formerly active player of Friday the 13th: The Game, I would be so happy to see it happen.

Therefore the devs have been, and are aware of, the matchmaking issues. Posting another thread to show how broken it is doesn't suddenly speed up the coding process.

It doesn't, but matchmaking has been broken to various degrees at least since I have started playing, which was Nov. 2018. There comes a point where a reasonable person has to stop extending the benefit of the doubt, in terms of the amount of time a problem has gone on. Behaviour is really bad at how they prioritize for this game. It needs to keep being brought up for as long as it needs to keep being brought up.

While I don't agree with everything there's certainly some good points here.

Matchmaking is obviously a mess, even though as seen in that video even rank 16 survivors come in with full perk loadouts because they have more time in the game. I guess that's the nature of games with grinding/virtually neverending progression.

There's also a common challenge with any game that has one form of complexity or another. DBD has a lot of "homework" for new players in the form of perks, addons, items, powers and offerings that complicate things for new players. If someone has no clue what's going on something like Decisive Strike or a killer walking straight over to them with some aura reading perk is going to be very confusing for sure.

As someone who has played a lot of TF2 and also introduced other people to the game I know that feeling very well 😄. Even today you see new players get confused or even confuse non-standard items for some sort of cheating, because very few people are gonna sit down and read 150+ weapon descriptions before launching the game. And that game is over a decade old at this point.

I'd personally like some sort of system that highlights perks/addons/offerings/powers a player encounters for the first time in the end-game lobby, as a little hint to "Hey, here's something you haven't encountered before!". While there are pretty wacky perks in the game that do strange things it might help a little and it's more involved than browsing a wiki or checking everything out in a KYF lobby. Sorta similar to how players get loading screen tips related to the killer they're against if they haven't gone against them before.

But unlike matchmaking which is a much more technical thing, it's hard to just "fix" how information is given to new players. Be too heavy-handed with it and it can be a turn-off, but at the moment they're very much encouraged to go looking for answers to their questions on their own with minimal guidance. And they probably don't even know what questions to ask in the first place.

What you are describing here is UI and UX, and it seems like Behaviour is terminally asleep at the wheel here. This is such a crucial, important part of any game when it comes to player education and retention, and I've never seen any developer get it so wrong. It's like a total afterthought at best. They need to have a designer whose entire job revolves around this.

For sure, let’s say you see a streamer/YouTube playing Ghostface and that seems cool, then you realize you start with no perks but oh well I’ll just warn them as I learn to play. But wait, there’s more! Most solid GF builds include some combo of Nurses calling and/or pop... I guess at least you get thrilling tremors you don’t need BBQ although you’d like it for the grind

Yeppppppp. Lord knows I've written about it at length on these forums in the past, but the Sisyphean perk grind is just insane. You have to put in a ton of work just to be able to play the game at an acceptable level of "normalcy" with regard to your loadout options.

It was always a known risk that not prestiging might mean missing out on something later on considering the prestige rewards have already changed once before.

I do not necessarily think 4 years is an acceptable time frame to keep holding everyone's feet to that fire without any meaningful updates. Any new system necessitates a modern approach that includes everyone.

I understand that. But, all those other games I mentioned are adversarial games too. I just don’t understand what draws so many toxic people to this game and not the others.

Eh, I mean, I'm sure everyone's experience is a little different. I've met some equally toxic people online who play fighting games, too. And hoo boy, the early days of League of Legends were baaaaaad. So this severity is not necessarily exclusive to this game, is what I am saying.

  • It's an adversarial game, and people are awful when they lose. Ignore them and move on. As my wife likes to theorize: They act like horrible people because this video game is the only thing that they have in life.

  • Whatever it is, it needs to let us keep all our perks when prestiging. If that isn't part of it, it's useless anyway, since prestiging is currently a waste of both BP and time. Wipe the offerings, items, and add-ons, sure. The perks -- especially on characters who you already have a full perk library with if you had the good sense to not prestige -- need to stay.

  • This game desperately needs cross-platform matchmaking. If, like, Fortnite can have an account-based structure that syncs up between platforms and allows console players to be matched with PC players, I dunno why this game can't.

(Not implying that its implementation is in any way easy, but this is really something the developers should have been on top of already.)

I had a Demo last night that had probably about a million ping, they were hitting me about five meters off and downing me, it was pretty bad. But they couldn't find the last survivor, so they kept letting me struggle off, like I was going to rat out my teammate. I knew where my teammate was but I refused to be that player, I've been on the receiving end of that situation far too many times, and it is the worst feeling ever. Solo survivor is truly a nightmare, I feel like I'm in Nazi Germany or Communist Russia being outted by neighbors, "There they are officer! To the hook! Now let me live because I'm a good pet."

Well this conversation just jumped the shark.

I was getting fed up with people who kept doing toxic garbage that wasn't necessary in game. They could just do what I do and run loops or stealth around the map. It's more fun and generally makes things more interesting. For me anyway. Doing toxic things to make yourself a bigger target is doofy in my views. It just makes things unfun for the opposition. Thus, when playing survivor, I don't flashlight stun and I don't really go from pallet to pallet like some people tend to do. I loop, I stealth, I enjoy myself, I give the killer a good time.

Flashlight stunning and using pallets are game mechanics. They are part of the game. Stunning the killer with a flashlight is literally intended use for that item, it buys survivors time to do their objectives, and it earns BP. "This is toxic behavior" is a construct that a lot of people have somehow fooled themselves into believing, when this is just a survivor using a game mechanic to their benefit.

You can counter flashlight stuns by looking at a wall when you pick someone up, and/or by having some awareness of your surroundings. If this is really a bridge too far, and you find yourself disconnecting because of it, then killer is probably not the right role for you. This is a "throws are dishonorable in fighting games" level of strange beliefs about a game mechanic.

EDIT: Also, it might help to have some perspective, and remind yourself that there is a difference between "toxic behavior" and "something that is irritating." I find flashlights irritating! It's really annoying when I get stunned, especially when I pick someone up. But that's just part of the game, man.

  • @Lavos99z said:

Has anyone else just not had fun playing killer? You get gen rushed by toxic people who sit there going from pallet to pallet, taunting you with health kits or flashlights, and occasionally they get lucky stuns. Really bummer. Sucks also when you keep getting games like that, and derank like crazy. Now, I'm not even by any means a bad killer, I've been rank 8 and I think that's a fair spot for me. But since rank reset I've gotten down to 14 and some of those games have been disconnects. The aforementioned reasons are why. Why is it that people have to play like toxic scumlords instead of letting everyone involved enjoy themselves? Is it written somewhere that everyone has to be a piece of sh*t in game lately? I don't understand. I am asking for help to get me to understand why people must be toxic and pretend they're not. What does one gain from being sh*tty to another person in a game? Do they have pent-up aggression that they take out in people in-game? Are they that sad? Help me understand.

That's pretty vague. What behavior are you getting fed up with, exactly?

Survivors are going to do things to make it hard for you to achieve your objectives, while trying to achieve their own objectives as quickly as possible. It's an adversarial game. Leaning on strong game mechanics to win a match should be expected. If you can't handle that, and it is getting to the point where you are disconnecting from matches, maybe you shouldn't be playing killer.

  • Yeah, the game needs to be able to catch when the disconnect wasn't on your side, and not take action against you for it.

in Ban Time Comment by Rydog
  • Click the little arrow once, and make it disappear forever.

  • These achievements definitely have unusually outsized requirements (especially when you compare them to the much MUCH more reasonable Adept survivor achievements). As with so many things in this game, I do not understand how this has continued to exist unaddressed, for multiple years, when this game is maintained by a large developer with more than 600 employees.

  • I sure wish they would move Barbecue & Chili's BP gain effect into the core killer kit so that it doesn't feel like a must-run perk, and these kinds of build suggestions felt more actionable to more players.

  • Umbra has always been my consistent favorite.

Tru3 is good too, but he's an irritating streamer. He is in love with his own cleverness, and he does that idiotic thing where he does a close-up to mug for the camera. Regardless of how good they are at the game, I strongly dislike streamers who try too hard to infuse this sort of insistent "character" that they have concocted.

Honestly perks should be organized by type, Aura, Healing, Tracking, Exhaust, Second Chance, etc. You could have some overlap too.

It would be great to have a straight-up alphabetical perk list, with some filters, like you are suggesting. And you could maybe filter by owned and unowned, see which perks are missing from a given character, etc. Give players the option to make a favorites list, save some custom perk loadouts that they can select from... there are all kinds of ways they could remake the loadout screen, to make it better.

Yea, height is the biggest obstacle. Another solution I thought about was having Tiffany in human form caring him on her back. Chucky would do the killing and Tiffany would do the hooking, etc.

    Hah, that's a neat idea.

Maybe the upcoming Chucky TV series will introduce something that could help them finally mold him into a workable killer concept.

  • @Orion said:

Uh... no. If the trial is one-sided, that's a problem with the matchmaking and requires a matchmaking solution, not a complete rework of the game mechanics.

yes they stack up. Saw a clip of a survivor urbaning faster than anyone could possibly sprint.

There are also killer hackers who equipped bond/empathy. Currently its really getting out of control tbh, the amount of bugs AND the hackers :(

Does this always show up on the endgame screen? Like would you be able to see that the killer had Bond equipped?

  • I would think the height issue is as much a problem with survivors seeing him, as it is for him seeing survivors.

If they ever added Chucky as a killer, I imagine it would have to involve him in his human form for most of the match, and perhaps he transfers his soul into a Chucky doll as some sort of limited-time power after he builds up a meter or whatever.

  • Yeah, this is most definitely not normal.

What would this even do? Does it stack and make them move at like 400% speed when crouching or something?

I've been playing this game for a few months now, and so far I've only been able to unlock teachable perks with Leatherface and The Wraith. I heard that the doctor is a great killer from which to farm bloodpoints from, so I would like to use him as a means to unlock more teachable perks.

I do have barbecue and chili unlocked, and I heard that having distressing, whispers, and overcharge are good perks too. Are you able to recommend any perks that don't fall under the teachable category for a new player in my position? (I know that nurse's calling and unnerving presence are great perks, but like said I don't have those teachables unlocked yet.)

"I've been playing this game for a few months now, and so far I've only been able to unlock teachable perks with Leatherface and The Wraith" -- yep, you've hit the main problem with this game on the head.

To your question, though: Distressing and Unnerving Presence are both faaaaaaaaantastic on Doctor.

  • Matchmaking's #1 priority needs to be that the killer belongs to the same color band as the highest-ranked survivor in the group. This should be true 100% of the time, no matter how long it takes for a match to pop. It's not perfect, but short of a complete MMR rework, this would help fix the matchmaking mess, which seems to have just gotten worse and worse over time.

  • @TheRockstarKnight said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1298416#Comment_1298416

I guess it is slightly healthier that survivors' item add-ons do not persist upon escape without the use of a perk or offering

I'd argue it actually makes the grind worse and the game less healthy as a result. Sure it happens to Killer add-ons, but that doesn't mean making it happen to Survivor add-ons is an improvement.

Ideally, both sides should be able to keep their add-ons when meeting certain requirements. That would be a step forward. But instead they're just dragging Survivors down to our level.

Also, White Wards don't protect Survivor add-ons, unlike their Killer equivalent Black Wards, they just protect the item - which can be lost anyway if the Killer uses Franklin's Demise - and why wouldn't you with all the Red Rank chuckleheads bringing Keys/Plunderer's basically every game.

I would argue that thinning out the add-on economy is a net benefit, because add-ons are a big part of this game's roulette wheel. If we collectively have to deal with terminally insane red add-ons in FEWER overall matches, it creates a healthier game experience.
