RE came with Flashbang, Blast Mine, and later Wiretap along with a guy ripped from the Matrix. Whether the label attached to it or not is horror, RE brought more action to DBD than TR ever will just by the nature of game design. I'm confused, you're fine with Action being included in DBD, so long as isn't coming from an Action series? Am I misunderstanding this?
Saying Gameplay mechanics are null and void because this is about the horror genre as a whole is entirely what makes me bored of this convo, because it sees licences as posters on a wall and nothing more. This isn't a game where you buy statues of characters and make them look pretty, it's a game, you play it. We shouldn't be adding licences for the sake of arbitrary nonsense like 'representation' because there will always be more to represent. As I've said earlier, I would appreciate more pillars of the horror genre be included. But that's the thing, isn't it? Horror is fluid, what you consider horror and what others do will vary. For instance,
https://www.reddit.com/r/TombRaider/comments/1dmngh5/tomb_raider_2013_a_horror_game/Do you still want to argue about this being a game with 'horror' connections?
Correction I actually hate the action in DBD which is why when more action is brought in IE Tomb Raider it pushes me further away from this game hence why I moved onto TCM mostly. Finnesse alone has brought more action into the game than anything in RE just with that (poorly animated at that) animation. At least flashbang isn't an actual flashbang, blast mine is a trap, and Wesker is a survival horror gaming icon where all of his actual action elements have been essentially removed.
And yes I do because nothing shown takes away from the fact Tomb Raider isn't horror its an action game. Something having minor horror connections again doesn't make it a horror game like??? Why are you guys so desperate to just suck up anything BHVR puts out its unironically proving my point further that DBD is going down the same path as fortnite where its players will just eat up any forcefully shoved in collab they can.
Mario has bones is Mario horror eligible? Spongebob has the hash slinging slasher might as well throw in a spongebob chapter since I guess tiny itty bitty horror connections make something officially part of the horror genre and eligible for DBD -

Right, but making numerous intentionally horrific and scary sequences in said games means it is a game with horror connections, and thus isn't out of place in a horror game?
Chris in RE5 is one of the most plain examples of an action hero I can think of, should RE as a whole have been discounted because parts of it weren't scary?
Is the arbitrary label we attach to the game's genre what matters for inclusion or is it the actual content inside of it that matters? Cause you can put footage of Lara and Jill being mauled side by side next to each other and I don't think a lot of people will tell you only one of the images is horrifying.
Tomb Raider 2013 wasn't trying to be a funny silly action game, it was upsetting, gory, scary at multiples points, and horribly depressing. Regardless of whether anything I just said makes it a 'horror' game or a game with 'horror' connections in your eyes, you can't deny that all of those descriptors are perfect for the world of DBD.
As I've said before, I would rather we get more pure horror licences that are pillars in the genre. F13, Predator, Candyman, FNAF, Amnesia, Slender, Dead Space, etc. all would bang in my opinion. But no, I don't see Lara pissing off an eldritch deity and getting trapped in a purgatory loop of Meg Tbagging and Blight head nods as out of place for her series or for DBD. In fact, it sounds like Tuesday.
Well we didn't get RE5 Chris even as a legendary skin and hes still attached to the most popular survival HORROR video game franchise of all time. Its both the label and the content especially for horror a game genre which is sickeningly underrepresented in gaming as a whole. And mind you using gameplay elements in this argument is entirely null and void because again its about the horror genre as a whole. 99% of fortnite collabs dont fit AT ALL in fortnite and they still shove and force them in anyways which is my point that DBD is heading in that same direction

The whole "it's not horror" complaint for this chapter makes no sense whatsoever.
Firstly, Horror is expansive and feeds into many genres. Tomb Raider has horror elements. Lara Croft faces a T-rex, oni's, Baba Yaga, a kraken .. all horror creatures. The 2013 remake also borrowed from horror atmospheres. Tomb Raider has many horror elements, whilst still being a survivor game.
Secondly, Lara Croft is a survivor in the strongest possible sense. If I was The Entity and looking for suitable, substantial meals then I'd be searching for people like Lara Croft who would put up a strong fight. She is basically the perfect candidate.
Thirdly, there are many characters in this game which are not horror. Most original survivors are not horror. Some Killers - such as The Trickster, The Legion or The Deathslinger- are not horror (The Deathslinger is basically a Western chapter with a little steampunk). None of these were picked up on when people complain about Lara Croft.
The whole argument falls flat. The Entity doesn't go round choosing horror characters from the many worlds it consumes. It doesn't go to Earth to swallow victims and entire planets, but leaves the presenters of CBeebies alone because they are not horror. It's not, but these complaints stink of Gatekeeping.
- the T-rex is not a horror character it is a real creature that existed many years ago and has been played up as a predator in action movies such as Jurassic Park
2. Doesn't matter what kind of 'survivor' she is in lore, the entity isn't real its a video game character.
3. Im not going over the tired argument of trickster not being horror solely because of his design its pathetic tbh
4. Again, the entity doesn't actually exist
- the T-rex is not a horror character it is a real creature that existed many years ago and has been played up as a predator in action movies such as Jurassic Park

If you want to believe that, sure. Curse of Strahd was made to teach people how to make horror campaigns in dnd, and Lara got mutilated in ways so bad back in 2013 I can't even describe them here without being banned, but believe what you want. Our experiences ultimately inform how we categorize media, and I've been more than traumatized by TR as a kid, so it makes sense that I would associate the series more with horror than others might.
An action hero dying does not mean that they are a horror game character

How is he rooted in horror? Someone can find this piece of fanservice scary?
literally read his lore. Him and Yun-Jin are all about ‘the sides of people you’ll never know’ he’s a murderer who picks his victims from a pool that’s seemingly never ending while maintaining a cover that forever keeps him away from crosshairs because of his beloved status as a celebrity. This topic isn’t about Trickster however and about the de-evolution of DBD directly turning away from horror in favor of money and becoming the next Fortnite

I don't think it's really fair to judge survivor inclusions the same way we would killer inclusions, like if for example Davy Jones showed up as a licensed killer that would obviously be very dumb. But survivors are just that, survivors.
Really the only criteria would be experiencing and surviving an attack of a supernatural nature and in that aspect I don't see Lara as any different as Jill, Bill, Steve, Cheryl, etc.
ugh I hate this argument. Those are all characters from HORROR IPs. That’s the difference flat out they are all HORROR characters. Also the fact (can’t believe I have to diss heather) Heather’s power of ‘defeating God’ is largely overhyped as it was at the end of the day just another Silent Hill creature that she shot to death, Bill also just shot things but without a gun he’s just an old man with slight military training, Steve is still a vulnerable teen without his entire group + weapons, Jill is from one of the most iconic horror franchises in the world and also in the OGs was just a woman with advanced military training not some crazy super fighter.
But most importantly they’re all rooted, based on, and designed with horror in mind. Lara is not despite how much I love her, a horror character.

I grew up with the first survival TR game on the 360, and although it wasn't a horror game, it certainly wasn't straying away from the genre. You could watch Lara dying in any number of ways to make Dead Space swoon. Eviscerated by cave cannibals, smashed flat by rubble, skewered across rebar polls. There was a pool of blood involved somewhere and I distinctly remember almost Lara's entire friend group dying along the way.
I do agree that I'd like it if some more full on Horror Licences got added over IPs with Horror connections, but I'm not mad at these inclusions either.
I think trying to stretch out the last 2 chapter releases as ‘chapters with horror connections’ is really reaching 😭

Where have you been when Trickster was released?
trickster is still heavily rooted in horror. Lara is an action video game character 👍🏽
just because a character occasionally fights a ‘zombie’ doesn’t mean they’re horror centric or rooted in horror -
@jesterkind said:
I gotta say, I really don't understand why Tomb Raider is supposedly over the line when other licenses we've had haven't been.
Lara, as a character, has just as much claim to be a DBD survivor as someone like Bill Overbeck or Leon Kennedy. She has WAY more of a claim than the Rainbow Six characters or the Attack on Titan skins, but to be fair, those were cosmetics, that is a slightly different thing.
Tomb Raider has plenty of horror to work with, and I don't see the substantial difference between that and Left 4 Dead or later Resident Evil titles. Yeah, Tomb Raider also has action setpieces, but for most of the newer trilogy - especially the one they're pulling most from - Lara spends most of her time skulking around, repairing old technology to try and stay alive, and being haunted by horrifying circumstances brought about at least partially by supernatural entities. It's really not hard to translate that into DBD's core gameplay loop, and I don't think the fact that there's combat and action setpieces should be an immediately disqualifying element.
It's not like she's a cartoon character, or from some zany comedy. Tomb Raider's flirted with horror a lot, this makes total sense.
tbf I also mentioned R6 in my original post which people got VERY mad at me for mentioning or even discussing.
-
Event would be great without Tryks. I detest her so much shes so generic and boring and her voicelines make me despise playing the twisted masquerade mode to the point once I get the Unknown skin I am not touching it ever again lol. mechanics are pretty fun though no real complaints

100%. I mean one day we're gonna get Jason, so Imagine we have

Lol no, a necromancer in a game does not automatically make it a horror game. But you can adapt necromancy into a horror medium and it fit just fine - Evil Dead for example.

Wheres the strawman? Not to mention none of yall even argued my actual point you just started defending Vecna to the core and ignored the actual point of the post. And im not ignoring it I'm just saying theres no horror theme to Vecna which there isn't. If hes horror does that mean when I play Skyrim and play as a necromancer Im playing a horror game now? Dbd is mostly a multiplayer tag game with a horror theme that has been succesful thanks to them being open to trying different things. Denying this would deny the most succesfull but more importantly fun chapters such as project W and nicholas cage which were objectively healthy for the game.
Project W you mean the chapter based on one of the best survival horror games of all time featuring 2 of the most popular characters from said survival horror franchise? Okay

You're being disingenuous by allowing SM's lore to be the source of her "horror." If that's fair game, you could do a 5 second google search and find the following about Liches (not even Vecna specifically, but just as a horror themed creature:)
Often such a creature is the result of a willful transformation, as a powerful wizard skilled in necromancy who seeks eternal life uses rare substances in a magical ritual to become undead. Unlike zombies, which are often depicted as mindless, liches are sapient revenants, retaining their previous intelligence and magical abilities. Liches are often depicted as holding power over lesser mindless undead soldiers and servants.Undead wizard revenants that use death magic and control the undead. Thats pretty horror if you ask me.
How? Lore and themeing plays large parts in what makes horror horror and even SMs map is pretty horror centric. Even then Vecna is again, just some wizard oh im sorry zombie wizard from a mystical fantasy game. Thats fine, but it doesn't make it horror nor does it make it even horror adjacent just because he's a zombie wizard.

"HES NOT A WIZARD!! HES AN UNDEAD WIZARD!!!" and you ignoring the point or playing dumb doesn't mean the point isn't there! Adventure Time had that one zombie episode where the candy kingdom residents turned into zombies so I guess Adventure Time chapter is entirely fair game and would fit in DBD since theres a small chance it can be horror right?

O think your only complain here is that he is a wizard, and magic is not horror...
Well. It is. It's magic that brought evil dead which Ash originated. And more
Magic can be hella scary I mean Hag's lore is pretty decent. And she didn't kill because of the manga she killed because she wanted to get rid of competition and sees everyone else as beneath her so much so that their lives are toys she just used the Skull Merchant moniker based on her dads manga which manga can also have some pretty strong horror so?
My complaint is that its a mystical wizard from an RPG tabletop fantasy game casting wacky and zany spells against an elf who plays instruments. -

R6 was just a cosmetic collab. We had some others, I think also charm ones, before. Guess you were also against those?
Just describing Vecna and his power in a funny way doesn’t validate your opinion. D&D isn’t bound to one single genre, and horror is definitely part of the D&D franchise, it doesn’t matter how much you complain about it. That’s a fact.
People being against Skull Merchant, Trickster and Legion have better arguments on why those don’t fit than you with Vecna.. (funnily enough, you are repoing a Skull Merchant pfp - the least horror looking character whose ability is drones that stay in place)
Again, billionaire who hunts and kills her competition using inventions of her creation who then takes and harvests their body parts as trophies
Vs
Flying wizard who casts big pink orbs that fly across the sky -

Since when are they shifting away from horror? There are different forms of horror, and I'm assuming you're referring to Vecna/DnD? Vecna is miles more scary than characters we already have in-game. I still laugh when skull metchant chases me, when she released she looked like an apex legends character.
Exploring different types of horror is what dbd does best, if we stuck with slashers the game would be stale af, then we got some supernatural killers, which was fine for a time, the it got boring. Thr devs explored killers of mythological origin and past times, slinger, oni plague and knight. Then they tried scifi which they mostly nailed if we discard skull merchant.
Hell I consider knight, plague, skull merchant, trickster and chucky funny characters not scary at all . Yes the game is horror themed but as a game that welcomes all types of horror, some of it may not be of your liking by mere probability.
Yet she STILL far outdoes Vecna in every way when it comes to horror. A rich billionaire who slaughters and hunts her competition using her own inventions vs a wizard who casts mystical spells and flies across the map. Oh but he can make neon purple skeletons that lightspeed shoot across the map so that justifies the horror element

D&D being a fantasy role playing game isn’t mutually exclusive to it also being horror - at least what we got in DbD is definitely on the horror side.
Vecna isn’t just a wizards. He is a lich. You don’t have to like him or his addition, but denying any ties to the horror genre is absurd.
People have been arguing about Stranger Things addition because it wouldn’t be horror but more Sci-Fi. Then we got Nicolas Cage (talking about throwing anything in just for the money lol) who everyone seemed to be super happy about and with whom you seemingly don’t have a problem either as you mentioned it started with this chapter?!
Also, why are you talking about a direction when you only mention D&D specifically? Or do you think Castlevania is also not horror?
We also got Rainbow six siege and yes I'm 100% denying his ties to the horror genre. At least Stranger Things S1 leaned further into horror and is even regarded as a horror franchise. And Nicholas Cage for the millionith time, is a unique case. When one of the most powerful people in hollywood, and most worldwide known actors says 'I will be in your game for basically free' you take that offer. And while I see nothing scary about Castlevania at all, I've never watched it nor played the games so I'm not speaking on it.

It stopped being one when we got nic cage. Vecna is much more fitting than a real life actor from our world.
The way hes unironically not. Nic Cage is at least known for being a partial horror actor and at the end of the day, offered his likeness for free why the hell would they turn that down esp from an A list worldwide known celeb? The occasional wacky or goofy thing happening is fine, after all comedy horror exists. But throwing in dungeons and dragons and rainbow six siege its just straying too far from what horror, and DBD is.

It became the best selling chapter and ultra hyped for very good reason (even if the gameplay of it didn't translate any horror). I just dont find wacky neon effects and wacky mystical spells casted by RuPaul very scary to face against

First off: DBD isn't moving away from horror, D&D may not be created purely for horror only, but it still has plenty of heavily horror theme'd elements to it, especially for places like the forgotten realm.
Secondly: D&D is a game engine designed to be whatever people want it to be, including horror, which is specifically what the chapter leans into and focuses on rather than leaning into D&D's high fantasy aspects.
Whether you have a problem with DBD branching out or not to things that aren't necessarily purely within the horror genre only, but still heavily horror theme'd, is more of a you issue rather than an issue with the game.
This lie that DnD is heavily horror is so…This chapter does not lean into horror in the slightest beyond the mori but something being gory or graphic doesn't make it scary. And if this is all the case whats the excuse for the R6 collab?
Do we just throw anything in now a days that has an ever so slight horror element? Like you guys keep saying 'Well DND has this potential!' but we already saw the chapter, its not horror in the slightest or even trying to be. They just chose Vecna because hes getting an expansion and they wanted some cool marketing. When the devs have to spend majority of the segment dedicated to talking about the new chapter just begging and pleading for us to think of it as horror in some way, rather than talking about the chapter itself, thats a sign its not actually based in horror lol.
If you guys want DBD to just collab with anything that'll allow it then fine do that but its not changing the fact that its going to alienate the original fanbase -

Is that the developers' fault? I see it differently. Just watch the same horror movie over and over again. At some point, you won't be scared anymore.
You can keep the tension, fear of getting caught, and vulnerability you feel as survivor alive but because of the direction of making survivors = to killer on a power level basis its gone.
-

where does DbD stop being a Horror game though?
I still see horror themes in all the additions and changes really.
It’s just that it’s moving away from stealth/hide‘n‘seek to more chase and slash..
this is not about Vecna - the lich who summons skeletons in-game - getting added, right? DnD isn’t entirely not horror, and Vecna specifically fills the horror role just fine.I mean we just got an entire chapter dedicated to a fantasy roleplaying game so…and its about everything and what people have been saying in regards to DBD. Adding in a fantastical wizard who's only form of 'horror' being a gory mori is still a bad decision that strays extremely far from what DBD has and should be. If having a gory mori is all it takes to be classified as horror adjacent then throw in Mortal Kombat while we're at it and make every survivor have to win a 1v1 fighting game stage against the killer💀
Bottom line is this about a collective things and the direction DBD is going in is just not good for the actual fanbase it has and is quickly becoming just another 'throw anything in it just for money' type game -

I mean shes basically an M1 killer with no chase power. As long as a survivor can keep her occupied for 5 gens then she has no pressure and each chase she gets is almost definitely going to cost her a gen because again, M1 killer with no form of game delay until she downs someone

They changed literally every single thing about how her power works, from how her drones detect survivors, to what her drones do when they detect survivors, to how her drones activate after being placed and how they function when deactivated. Literally everything about her power except the base concept is different.

November 2022 is Knight
March 2023 is Skull Merchant
(all I'm saying is quality trumps quantity)
I could just be missing something but I don't remember any massive gap in content (then again I take regular breaks from the game and have missed major things like release legion)
Between Pig and clown so around January of 2018-May of 2018.
We had no content because they were working on adding the shop and redoing the entire game from the ground up for version 2.0.0. -
Do I need to remind everyone that I've reminded them about countless times?
Without CONSTANT content, DBD will die. We had ONE time in the games history where we didn't get new content for 6 months straight, the game dropped to one of its lowest player counts and was in the process of dying. -

Pushes button - passive scan, gets haste, 2 scans, more haste, 3 scans , injured, hindered, more scans, hindered. All while gaining Undetectable for each drone and no slow down to plant a drone. I don't think you play her if you can't understand those basic concepts. She pushes a button and the drone does all the work passively without any further assistance
Except you leave out the part that those effects only happen if the survivor is scanned...which survivors can avoid
Like you guys cant complain about her if youre getting scanned outside of chase lol
-
The more people try and describe her power to make her seem stronger than she actually is the more I doubt any of you actually understand what she does

Sigh another Skull Merchant hate post people will believe without evidence despite several extremely inconsistent things.
Like if you're actually going against good survivors then defending gens isn't going to work like...at all and the only time she 'punishes players for another player activating a drone' is also against bad survivors because no good survivor is activating her drones if they're not being chased by her.
So two large things which should never happen against survivors who actually are good being used to prove shes an OP killer despite both things not applying to actually skilled survivors. This is like me saying Huntress is super OP because when I throw a pallet she always hits me, yeah playing against a killer the wrong way will have the bad results.

OP could just hook let them self unhook and tunnel them. It's all Killers are programmed to do mindlessly.
So tunnel them when they have a large head start, be forced to stand by or around the hook to maintain pressure, wasting minutes of time...no sorry if you're gonna play toxic we can too

It has some niche use in very specialised gimmick strats for SWF.
Which means it can still have it's place, but in an ideal world, you should never see it in solo queue.
Yeah me and my friend ran it with me running an injury build so start of the match we could just go run over and get it done in 1 minute, it sucked but it was something I guess.

So petty. Heaven forbid Survivor does anything fun besides slamming Gens.
What do you think the 3 other survivors are doing in this time

I don't know, it only gives a bubble up of someone up to 40 m away from you... I don't see that as too much information... During the time it takes you to go there the guy that screamed can be God knows where.
32m isn't that far and by the time you get there there will definitely be scratch marks leading to their exact location and if there isn't then you know they're still in the area
