Sadly I only entered the fog around the Twins' mid chapter. Just in time to play my first few survivor matches against Forever Freddy (this pain will never go away). :(
From a gameplay perspective I can understand that some of the visuals were changed because there were some incredibly dark spots on older maps, that would make it hard to see anything (like old The Game) but I don't think changing these maps' signature looks so much was a good decision. It's good for a game like DBD to have maps that are so iconic, that they would be recognised anywhere. The new maps look a bit too generic to really cross that box. You could easily have Ormond in CoD or whatever other game and it wouldn't feel out of place. Old Lery's and Coldwind on the other hand? That would feel out of place because they both make you uncomfortable.
Ah, I see. It is unfortunate that you didn't get to see many interesting things this game had to offer. I entered the fog around Legion's release, which was in late 2018.
Seeing the maps get changed one by one was awful. But I have faith I'll see the game I loved again. It is healthy to have a bit of hope.

You know what, I get where you are coming from when you explain it like that and I respect it. I hope this was clear that I meant no ill will with my confusion by the way; I've just never seen anyone say anything really positive about the remake let alone prefer it over the original.
Its all good :)
The remake didn't have a positive reception, so I understand where the shock is coming from.

I thought Hag's adept was going to be hard as hell, but it was actually pretty easy.
Third Seal CARRIED that game.

I only know that one from videos but I agree. It looked real scarry. Most maps we have nowadays are more "tame" in their horror atmosphere and some don't have any to begin with. Like Ormond, Toba Landing, Borgo (Why's it still red?) and Coldwind.
You weren't here for original Léry's? Ah, I'm sorry to hear that.
Clearly you appreciate the horror atmosphere and scary feeling the old maps have. You would've loved to play on Léry's, I'm certain of it.

That would be amazing. The things I'd give to play on old Haddonfield and Coldwind again. Yes the maps were extremely broken but damn they had an atmosphere that really made me feel like I didn't want to be there. Which is a very positive thing given the premise of the game. Just the visuals alone would be enough for me.
I would pay for a "classic" pack or mode. The Old DBD is easily one of the best games I've ever played, and the maps are a very important aspect of it.
My favorite map was, and still is, Old Léry's. I loved the creepy hospital atmosphere so much it was unreal. And as fate would have it, it was the first map to be reworked...

I have seen and heard the wildest opinions on this forum. From the most confusing misunderstandings of basic game mechanics, troll bait designed specifically to start Us vs Them flame wars, and even plain contrarianism just to never have to admit they may be wrong.
And yet I have never been as taken aback as by seeing someone say they prefer the remake Freddy over the original.
Well, it is the truth. I'd go as far as to say the ANOES remake is my favorite horror movie.
I've watched the entire Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, but I don't like the "silly" approach they took with Freddy after the first movie. The remake fixes that: it makes him darker, scarier, brutal.
I love it.
-
Freddy's license is weird, difficult to get. Iirc, it is split between a studio and whoever received the original rights from Wes Craven, so that is why many games don't even have Freddy. Hell, it is a miracle DBD has him.
But honestly? That is the one thing I'll never complain about. I prefer the remake version, so I'm good.

@moulesfrites said:
I hear you man. Freddy never got the love he deserves. @GeneralV would agree with that.
Thanks for mentioning me, I appreciate it. There can be no Freddy threads without me :)
And Freddy has a sad tale. They got him right on the very first try, but them they nerfed him for absolutely no reason, then completely reworked him (which is the one thing in DBD that I hate most), and nerfed him again.
Freddy really needs help. And I hope you don't mind, but I'll use this comment to share my idea for a Freddy change that, hopefully, everybody can enjoy. I just want to maximize the chance of BHVR seeing it and thinking: "...maybe".
It is naive, but it doesn't hurt to try. Here is what I would like to see for the Nightmare:
Power: Dream Demon
Pull survivors into the Dream World
-Survivors who are awake do not see The Nightmare.
-Once targeted by The Nightmare’s power, survivors enter the Dream Transition for 7 seconds.
-During the Dream Transition Survivors can see The Nightmare intermittently and they suffer from the Incapacitated status effect.
-When the Dream Transition Lapse, the Survivor is pulled into the Dream World.
Once in the Dream World:
-Survivor’s auras are revealed to The Nightmare when they are outside of his terror radius.
-Survivors suffer an action speed penalty of 50%.
-To exit the Dream World, Survivors can find non-sleeping Survivors to perform a wake up action.
-Failed Skill Checks can also wake up.
-Hooked Survivors wake up.
Special Ability: Dream Projection
-Teleport to a Generator in view. Releasing the button early will cancel the action.
-Survivors cannot interact with the targeted Generator.
“You have nothing to worry about. This won’t hurt one… little… bit.” -Freddy Krueger

New players are fine.
There is plenty you can do with base teachable perks combined with general perks.
It is more than enough to carry you through your first trials, before you can grind everything.

My first match was on Rotten Fields, I think. Sadly, it looks so different now that I never quite get this feeling anymore.
Damn, thinking about the old Coldwinds gives me so much nostalgia. They were ugly, eerie and really uncomfortable. Exactly what I want from a DBD map.
I know that feeling all too well, my friend.
Honestly, I would be completely fine with the reworked maps if they were optional. Like, we know for a fact the game supports people with different lighting playing on the same map, as modders literally did that.
So, why not make the map reworks an option?
That way, you can still play in the old maps, or switch to the new ones if you want to. Everyone wins.

It will be hard because of those garbage reworked maps, but I think I can still pull that off. I was a relatively good Blendette.

Speaking of coincidences, a very wholesome one often happens to me.
When I return from a DBD break, it is not uncommon for the game to send me to Azarov's Resting Place, which warms my heart.
My very first match was on Azarov's, all the way back in 2018. Whenever I get that map after a break, I like to think DBD is telling me:
"Welcome back".

They wanted make Freddy stronger tho ( we never needed that btw, old Freddy was strong enough ) but Billy rework was just wanted kill him. Like his add-ons nuked, his base-kit butchered. There is nothing left for him. Even after years, they still tried nerf him but they got so much negative feedbacks and they reverted it. They are not letting Billy rest for a bit... I am really hoping upcoming rework makes him good like old times, he was good boy.
In the end, neither Freddy nor Billy deserved the chopping block, and that is what they got. Huntress could get the same treatment, and that has to be avoided.

I do think Freddy needed a rework, just not the one he got.
Well, I don't.
But the point is... feedback is useless if it is going to be ignored.
-
@Pulsar said:
I don't think she needs it.
But neither did Billy, nor Freddy a full rework. We can all agree with that.
But when it comes down to it, I don't think they care. They will drop the change regardless of what we think.

So what was wrong with these nerf? You are really not defending pre-nerf Xeno, do you? Where survivor was getting hit no matter what. Chucky also had similar issue in PTB. But both killers are doing fine in live servers. So what's the problem?
I am not part of dev team but i am playing this game pretty often. And i just don't see any issue with Huntress. Maybe they will tweak her add-ons. There is zero reason to complaining about something did not happen yet. Let's wait and see what they are planning. After that we can give our feedbacks. It pointless for now.
There is zero reason to complaining about something did not happen yet.
I gotta disagree with this one.
The fact that Huntress, a killer that no one has any problems with, was chosen for "tweaks" is extremely concerning. What BHVR did to Freddy, Hillbilly and Deathslinger is completely unforgivable and people need to be very vocal right now.
It sends a message: do NOT touch Huntress.
-
They are very, very rare. The Depip Squad I believe is the best example of an elite SWF group, far more impressive than any other team, and since I've first started playing DBD (2018) I never saw a group on that level.
Maybe close, once or twice, but not on that level.
The extremely high level of play is a scenario so rare that I don't think it should be taken into consideration when balancing the game.
-
Some of my matches got easier, and others got harder.
I don't really know what is going on.
-
Freddy needs his old power back with QoL improvements.
I've been playing him exclusively for the last... few hours? I've returned to the game recently, and he feels awful, as I suspected he would.
I'm begging BHVR at this point. I need my favorite killer back, no matter the cost.
-
to hide and do gens all game.
But that... that is just how I normally play the game as survivor. Always has been.

Ikr!?
Awful, really awful. The endless list of unnecessary changes and bad design choices.
-
Agreed.
But it would take more than that. What butchered Self-Care the first time was the healing action itself being changed from 12 to 16 charges.
So we either need to revert this change or make Self-Care change the amount of required charges.

When you down a survivor, any other survivors within 16 meters get 20% Hindered for 10 seconds. 30 second cooldown.
Ah, thank you.
Gotta say it sounds like a very bad perk.
-
@Pulsar said:
I see threads almost daily complaining about Survivors not healing and doing gens instead.
Putting aside the absolute ridiculousness of your statement (seriously, Survivors cannot tunnel someone out) and looking at your basal argument...half of these things are throwing and the other half are already complained about.
Survivors do not usually have time to do totems or chests, nor do they generally have time to waste healing after the self-healing nerfs in the current meta. Just like Killers usually do not have time to one-hook everyone, then two-hook everyone and then three-hook everyone.
Speaking of which, I find it endlessly amusing that the cycle continues. I watched this exact thing play out five years ago after the first round of self-healing nerfs. Killers complained about Survivors healing too quickly, BHVR obliged them and nerfed healing. Survivors didn't waste time healing and just, to quote you, tunneled gens...you know, their only objective. Killers complained that gens went too quickly and the cycle continues to this day.
The healing changes that butchered Self-Care back in 2018 are among the worst design choices in the game's history.

A lot of players have a very narrow view of how the game should be played and wildly varying opinions on perks and why/who run them.

As an Old Freddy main, I can definitely tell you it was not the only working strategy. There is also the matter that no one is asking for him to return exactly as he was. Old Freddy was and still is my favorite thing about DBD, but he was in need of QoL changes for a long time.
Slugging and stalling matches with his slowdown was the strategy most freddy players used because it was the most effective, i know because i have played as and against all versions of freddy throughout dbd's lifespan.
Either that or his power gets rendered irrelevant half the time because Survivors failing skill check during dream transition and or just walking to a pallet before dream transition ends everytime.
Also let's not forget how on high level play, Freddy would absolutely get demolished 90% of the time, and way easier than most other killers.
If we went by your proposal, you'd bring back all the elements from old freddy that alot of people hated and complained about back then with only some adjustment to it while only keeping dream projection from his current kit, all of which i not only believe is a terrible idea, but i absolutely abhorre the very thought of having any semblance of his first iteration in the game again, sorry but no, it ain't it chief.
Freddy needs QOL to his current power, what he doesn't need is to be reverted back to his old kit with adjustments.
Also, the built-in slowdown will not be an issue. Numbers can be changed individually, and even if they aren't, the bulk of the slowdown will depend upon on staying asleep, which is something you definitely don't wanna do when facing Freddy, period.
The slowdown was very much an issue, being forced to fail a skill check in order to wake up if all survivors was asleep is not only bad counterplay, but felt bad to do as a survivor.
Average Freddy match would be him putting Survivors to sleep, chase them off gens and kick a few pallets, then find another Survivor to put to sleep before returning to the previous Survivor the moment one of them wakes up, rinse & repeat. Now combined that with all the slowdown perks we currently have in the game, Freddy is legit going to become Forever Freddy 2.0
No amount of rose colored glass talk is gonna change the overall disdain i have had towards old freddy or just about every aspect of old dbd in general throughout the 8 years that i've played this game, i firmly believe there is nothing worth saving about old freddy and if he's ever brought back, he will be the only killer i will refuse to play against. He's also most likely gonna be complained about just as much as he was in the past before he got reworked.
Slugging and stalling matches with his slowdown was the strategy most freddy players used because it was the most effective, i know because i have played as and against all versions of freddy throughout dbd's lifespan.
So have I. And while I cannot deny that I've seen this strategy before, in my experience it was neither the most prominent nor the most effective. Of course, it is entirely possible that our experiences just happened to be that different, but this is something to think about.
A survivor failing a skill check during the transition would be fixed by my proposal, and if they make it to a pallet there are ways around that. Mindgames during the transition were really sun to do, and of the gimmicks you could learn if you played him enough. I loved it.
As for the high level of play, it depends on what we're talking about. The Elite Squads are so rare that they don't even matter, and I've seen plenty of Old Freddy players win high ranked games. Not every single time obviously, and not as effortlessly as Nurse or Spirit. But it was possible. Players make mistakes all the time.
If we went by your proposal, you'd bring back all the elements from old freddy people hated and only adjust them while only keeping dream projection from his current kit, all of which i not only believe is a terrible idea, but i absolutely abhorre the very thought of having any semblance of his first iteration in the game again, sorry but no, it ain't it chief.
That is your opinion, which you absolutely have the right to share. I don't agree with it, but I respect it.

That I disagree with. Unfortunately it is literally impossible to get footage to back up my argument, as we're discussing a scenario that has yet to happen, but I really don't think the combined slowdown will be oppressive. Waking up, either by a filed skill check or by another survivor helping ya will remove half of it, and the other half I presume is based of perks like Pain Res and Pop.
That is the current meta, there is no telling what it will be by the time Freddy gets changed. And besides, I've told ya the slowdown numbers were up for discussion. I'll keep my proposal the way it is, for now, but there is room for debate.
Please, don't ever talk about "rose colored glass" to me. Everything I use to back up my arguments is not based on memory alone: I'm constantly viewing and reviewing Old DBD footage and information, to make sure I say things as accurately as possible.
But alas, all of this is... pointless, isn't it? You've made your stance on the matter quite clear, and so have I. I won't be able to convince you that Old Freddy was better for the game, just like you will never be able to convince me that he was not. This is as far as we will get.
However, let me make a small request: if, by some miracle anything resembling my proposal makes into the game (and that is one big "if"), give the killer one chance. Just one.
You won't regret it, I promise.

Freddy was awful to play as and a joke to play against back then, period. Only working strategy for freddy was stalling the game out until he won. Bringing back his old design would not only be worse than what we already have, but we'd be sitting with a killer who not only has inbuild slowdown, but who is now gonna drag games out even more than previously with the amount of slowdown perks in the game.
But hey, if people wanna add forever freddy 2.0 into the game and have another killer who can prolong matches for an unnecessary amount of time, then by all means, go right ahead.
As an Old Freddy main, I can definitely tell you it was not the only working strategy. There is also the matter that no one is asking for him to return exactly as he was. Old Freddy was and still is my favorite thing about DBD, but he was in need of QoL changes for a long time.

"I'm not saying the past was any better"
I believe it was. In my experience (and I really have to emphasize that, because we've all faced different players throughout the years), DBD is far more toxic and competitive nowadays than it was in the past.

Does this mean Twins is a complete overhaul to their power? I thought there was a previous BHVR statement, that it wasn’t supposed to be a complete overhaul?
It feels like it’s been years since we were told about the Twins update, but we haven’t gotten any previews or anything, and at this point, I think a lot of people are worried that any update that takes this long, will result in such huge changes, that players that currently like Twins will be disappointed with the rework.
"will result in such huge changes, that players that currently like Twins will be disappointed with the rework."
Whoever is responsible for approving such changes does not care about the current players.
Freddy, Billy and Deathslinger players painfully learned that lesson.
-
Sadako.
It hurts me to not answer Freddy, but we all know how he currently is.
I don't have a lot of practice nor playtime with Sadako, but I'd say I did relatively well with her when I last played DBD. I think there are quite a few tricks you can do with her after 50 hours.

That would be nice, lol. I tried to avoid totem perks because even if you found a survivor cleansing it...you can't hit them. Find a survivor opening a gate, you MIGHT be able to stop it if it's just started but otherwise, they just continue. Find a survivor about to finish a gen and you just have to watch them finish.
Also if they get a skillcheck during any point of finishing a gen/healing in your face, the wasted time from failing it more than makes up for the 7 seconds of reset sleepy beam time.
You know what I liked to do? Stack blocks.
It was so funny when you managed to grab a survivor because they thought they would have time to finish the gen / cleanse the totem before the transition lapse.
That was priceless.

32 metres at base, same as the one we currently have.
However, his static field affected the entire radius, and there were add-ons to increase it:
So your TR got massive.

Just a normal strategy, but old Freddy had a mechanic where you had to tag someone with a sleepy beam before hitting them 7 seconds later. It made hook saves at endgame brain dead easy since even if you tagged someone running up to the hook, they'd have their teammate unhooked and on the way to the gate before you can get the first hit in. Without a 1 hit down... they just run out the gates with that much of a head start.
I actually liked using old class photo, which made overall juggling easier, but increased the sleep time to 9 seconds.
I mained him too, you know? Which is why I was wondering about the endgame comments.
I never camped during the endgame, nor prepared much for it. I always tried to win before all the gens got done, but sometimes it just ain't possible.
What I would do in those situations depended on how many survivors were still alive, to be honest. But overall, I agree with the problem of not being able to top the unhook, which is precisely why I constantly mention the idea of giving him the Incapacitated status effect during the Transitions, as it literally solves the problem.
