  • Wasn't that bad.

You try to tunnel at the end of the game, survivor uses DS and leave. You move on to the next match.

It has always been fair play on their part.

I didn’t play much killer before they nerfed TotH but after looking it up, it’ll settle for its original incarnation if I can’t have original Undying. At least that way I can actually protect the lit totems shining like a disco ball on top of hills.

It was always interesting to go against killers who used TotH for totem defense, those were some of my favorite trials. Not sure why the perk was nerfed, but it should be reverted.

the "end of game" mori system with no basekit unbreakable aka any combinations of 4 dead / slugged / hooked survivors game ended with a mori

That is a very unique idea. Interesting.

I’d like Old Undying back. It would make hex builds viable

Ah, very controversial answer, my dear friend :)

I always preferred Thrill of the Hunt over Undying for Hex builds, to be honest, even if the original Undying was way more powerful.

Remember based on the prompt there isn't a limitation to what it could be to counterbalance, its not limited to reversions or something that almost made it into the game this could be its own thing or a reworked thing that didn't make it

That is true, but I'd like to keep my answer restricted to reversions.

Come one, I'm curious now: what is your answer?

  • Hold on, this whole operation was your idea.

What a difficult decision. It would have to be something in the same power level, but it cannot be restricted to a single killer because pallets obviously aren't restricted to a single survivor.

Perhaps Old Ruin? There is the matter of Totem RNG, but if killers wanted more time to do things it was the best tool they had. But the question remains: would the additional time granted by Hex: Ruin with a good totem spot be enough to compensate for the few hits you won't land due to the Pallet Vacuum? Or perhaps a perk reversion is equal only to another perk reversion?

This is one is quite the challenge, my friend. Pallet Vacuum isn't something I believe should be brought back to the game.

But you've raised an interesting debate here.

  • Skull Merchant, I presume.

The one killer who gets the most amount of DCs, although I have no doubt Twins would be a contender if they weren't as rare as they are.

  • It doesn't work anymore so I cannot keep my answer up to date, but Monitor & Abuse was an excellent perk for Freddy.

On-release, M&A reduced his Terror Radius from 16 meters to 8 meters. And after his first nerf, from 24 back to 16. This worked extremely well for his aura reveal on asleep survivors and if you wanted to you could make it even stronger by using it together with the old Red Paint Brush.

However, there is an honorable mention for Overcharge.

  • What they should do is remove Badham 2 to 5 and keep only Badham 1 in the game, as it used to be.

Badham 1 is an excellent map, because it still has the original layout. That map I strongly believe is fair for both sides.

But the others? The others are bad.

  • Is that what you want for survivors?

Fair enough. What would killers get in exchange?

  • We revert something for the survivor side, then something for killers.

There are plenty of options to choose from.

  • Well... someone has to say it :)

  • Some of them are fun.

Chainsaw-only Billy is fun, Jump-Scare Myers is fun, the old Spooky Freddy build was fun, Bamboozle Nurse is fun (haven't seen anyone do this meme since, like, 2019 but it was pretty funny) and this list goes on.

It mostly depends on which killer we're talking about. A Trickster that, idk, never uses a basic attack would still be unfun to go against.

These extremists aren't happy because BHVR took their most busted toys away. They want old MFT, they want old DH, and they want old CoH. All at the same time. With old DS on top of that, as basekit.

It is true that some things could use reversions, though certainly not MFT, DH or COH.

But that isn't really the issue being complained about. Tunneling being the strongest it has ever been combined with some unnecessary changes and the existence of MMR creates a very frustrating experience.

  • Chucky is an interesting one.

He fits the game, as most horror icons do, and that is already a massive W. His pseudo-stealth and footsteps are awesome, they really help with the horror atmosphere, which is an important aspect of the game.

3rd person point of view and the ghost of Charles Lee Ray appearing when hooking a survivor are unique aspects, and we all appreciate having unique killers. I'm not the biggest fan of his voice lines, but I understand why most people like them.

The only thing I don't understand is why he plays like a mini-Blight. I'm not sure what he could do if that wasn't the case, but it is the only aspect of his power that I do not enjoy.

  • @jesterkind said:

If it's a 3-gen situation, there really isn't much of a point playing it out. Though, that said, far too many people immediately DC or give up as soon as they see Skull Merchant without actually ascertaining how they're playing, and that's pretty indefensible. That's straight up just leaving because you don't like the killer at that point.

As for how to fix her, you don't need to radically overhaul her power. You just need to lean into it being versatile and strategic, while lessening its direct lethality and removing certain addons. It's already capable of doing far more than 3-genning, just not very well. So... make it better at those things with number buffs, and retool her addons to better support those playstyles, while nerfing its area-denial capability by removing Lock-On. That's my pitch.

Do you have a full concept for her?

Skull Merchant isn't a part of the Old DBD, so she is outside my area of expertise. I'm genuinely curious to know what her players wanted to do with her.

  • And the thread became another "Us vs Them", of course. All because of a mechanic that won't affect regular trials.

I know this pill is hard to swallow, but killer has been fully playable and winnable for years. This new mechanic is not going to change that.

  • I think these technical details are hard to fit within the lore, to be honest. The way I see it, in terms of lore a trial would go on until everyone was either dead or managed to escape (as it used to be).

  • Nope. But it is always good to see Goblin Quentin again.

    As for the actual topic:

Feng is the cutest survivor. Together with my beloved Claudette, obviously.

There is a reason why many players say 2019 DBD was the best there ever was. We had a good thing going, but now we suddenly... don't? It doesn't add up.

I'm on the other side of this. I played the game when it came out, didn't care for it. I gave it another shot when Deathgarden was out, because I really loved that game, again didn't care for it. Came back and tried it mid 2022 and have been playing it pretty much every day since.

Okay, different players like different things, that isn't that strange. Except when these issues come up we have numbers. DbD didn't really explode until mid 2021. COVID accounts for some of the change, that's why it increased during March 2020, but the explosion didn't happen until later.

Put simply, looking at the numbers, more people like the game that DbD became then what it was. Nothing wrong with being outside the group, but there's a reason BHVR has gone in the direction they have.

After 4 years in these Forums, I am very skeptical about number of players being used as arguments. There are far too many factors being taken into consideration.

An option that let's us switch between the following would be nice.

    1. Hearing no voicelines at all
    2. Only hearing your own Survivor's voicelines
    3. You hearing all Survivor's voicelines

    Good suggestion.

  • As someone who mained Old Freddy, I loved to go against Old Object of Obsession users. Made my job much easier.

  • What I see wrong with DBD is the game getting rid of its Golden Age and changing directions completely, something that is connected to all four notes you've mentioned.

Does anyone even remember the original map adjustments? Before the maps were ruined? Yeah, that was the first issue already fixed.

    SBMM should be scrapped. Period.

As for the anti-loop killers, we have far too many of them, specifically those who aren't well designed. Huntress and Pyramid Head are good killers and their powers can be used in chases, but they aren't "leave loop and hold W" the way killers like Artist or Xenomorph are.

And the last note is a problem that fixes itself, if the game happens to be in a good spot.

There is a reason why many players say 2019 DBD was the best there ever was. We had a good thing going, but now we suddenly... don't? It doesn't add up.

  • Claudette is a perfect, flawless character.

She is beautiful, has a short but very interesting lore, her starting perks are pretty helpful (though Self-Care could use a buff), Blendette is (was?) a thing, and her "TEAMSXY Gear" is an amazing cosmetic piece.

What more could I possibly want? She is not just a survivor, she is THE survivor.

    @Huge_Bush said:

    Because Claudette is the best.

  • The Huntress.

Her lore is outstanding, with plenty of potential for an interesting game of her own.

I think it's a bit early to tell high Hillbilly will rank after his rework. They added a completely new mechanic to his kit that allows for very different plays and his Engravings now enable completely different things in Overdrive while disabeling most normal curves (you're too fast to even turn in time). He is definitely in a good spot overall but quite tough to rank yet.

As for Sadako, I think she might rank a little higher even. She can be quite a monster especially on her better maps.

Well, I stand by my opinion that he isn't the weakest. Merely because I think Trapper and Clown are weaker.

But I have no ilusions regarding his strength. This is the weakest Freddy has ever been.

Yes but trapper can camp like Freddy could never wish, clown has pretty good addons, pink finger, which is huge since it eliminates boddy blocks and makes unhooks real hard. Trapper would probably be the worst but some of the buffs he received make him better than a killer that must wait 1 minute to teleport and has no power until someone gets in the dream word, which btw they can leave by missing a skill check.

But if we're going to bring add-ons to the table, then I believe Freddy is still superior to Trapper and Clown with RPB and Nancy's Masterpiece.

It ain't by much, he still leaves a lot to be desired. But that is just how I feel.

    Mobility, mostly.

Yeah, maybe. I still have a few on Jake, but I lost the rest on my other characters. :(

    I know how that is.

Because that Glass Splinter was the only treasure I had left. I don't think they said in advance they would remove the remaining splinters from the bloodweb, and if they did I completely missed the announcement.

So all I can do is ask the developers for a little help here.

  • Freddy definitely isn't the weakest of them all.

This is the weakest he has ever been, no doubt, but not enough for the position of weakest killer in the game.

First of all, 100% ruin regression is so bad most survivors tend to ignore it anyway and only cleanse it if they run into it. Remember the old old ruin? The one with the skill checks? That grinded the game to a complete halt as every survivor ran around looking for the totem. Or what happens when devour kicks in? Same kind of deal. But the current ruin isn't worth the perk slot. It wouldn't even be worth the perk slot if it wasn't a hex.

Secondly, you start talking about PGTW which also isn't a good regression perk anymore. The "average" gen you kick is going to be between 50-100% done. Which means that you are only knocking off ~20 seconds of progress, which doesn't factor in the time it took to walk there etc., whereas with say pain res you get not only a guaranteed 22.5 seconds off the gen, but it is always the gen with most progress, the one you want to be regressing anyway. It also gives you a clue on which gen it is, and if someone is working on it if you pay attention.

Thirdly, if you are spending 20 seconds to walk across the map to kick a gen, you are doing it wrong. Gen kicking is never worth it unless you have perks to do so. And even then its really only Nowhere to Hide around a gen you suspect survivors to actually be around. And it isn't about the regression, but more about finding them.

Passive regression is bad because passive regression happens at 1/4th the speed of survivors working on gens. Burst regression or gen blocking has always been king for a reason.

You have to think about how much value you get out of pain res vs a ruin. Pain res is basically an extra gen the survivors have to repair. In order for ruin to that level, assuming you have 1 survivor running around looking for the totem and taking 60 seconds to find it and cleanse it (average for searching half the map) you still would need to have survivors not be working gens for a full 120 seconds for you to get the same full value of pain res. And if survivors completely ignore the totem? You need to keep survivors off of gens for 360 seconds. Yeah maybe you can regress multiple at once, but not as often as you'd like. You'll never reach the same value of ruin as you can pain res.

This same value is also why deadlock and corrupt are actually the best gen defense perks. Deadlock blocks gens for a total of 120 seconds and corrupt forces survivors to basically start a chase with you to start working a gen (they have to walk toward you) or they try and wait it out, in which case you have time to find them, setup, plan, etc. Gaining even more time.

With these regression changes though, and the new 5% kick, here is what i expect the new meta to be.

    • Corrupt
    • Deadlock
    • Grim Embrace
    • Nowhere to Hide (assuming they nerf the grim embrace/dead man's switch interaction)

You get passive slowdown with 0 input from you by using corrupt and deadlock. Grim embrace is free if you at least don't hard tunnel and nowhere to hide means you can kick a gen, see if someone is near it, and if not, know you'll get some regression on it and can go somewhere else.

And if they dont nerf GE and DMS interaction then you slap on DMS too and you get tons of passive gen defense.

Remember the old old ruin? The one with the skill checks? That grinded the game to a complete halt as every survivor ran around looking for the totem.

To this day, it remains one of my favorite killer perks ever designed.

  • @The_Yosh said:

  • @BlightedTrapper said:

I think it might deserve about 150% regression speed to be decent. Though I'm not of the opinion that regression absolutely needs to be meta like so many in this community. I'd prefer all slowdown nerfed to be around mid-tier, and killers can get more basekit slowdown to compensate. I think that would help build variety a lot.

I don't think people want regression to be meta. But in the current state of the game, they feel stacked regression is a necessity, otherwise the trial would end before they even had a chance to do anything.

If given the chance to return to a meta that lacked four slowdown perks stacked, I am sure many would take it.

  • @kit_mason said:

Before I begin, I want to make clear that I didn't experience this game in 2019. I joined during Binding of Kin, and whilst it didn't quite grab me immediately, coming back later did and I have since been playing this game very consistently (over 10 hours a week averaged out) for the last 18 months. I also seem to lack the nostalgia many DBD players seem to hold for the game, as I whole-heartedly think the game has never been more balanced (as in, the side more dedicated to win, through experience, loadouts, and mindset, is the side that sees better results).

I also want to quickly discuss your pre-TL;DR paragraph, because it struck me as odd. Your noted evidence for the community changing was not balance discussions, wasn't opinions you see the community hold, it was responses to the way minorities are treated and the changing of a symbol from a noose to a broken bottle. And my question really has to be why those things? Black people, gay people, and people made uncomfortable by nooses aren't the groups that are advocating changing the mechanics of the game in ways you find unhealthy. Hell, the devs that changed those aspects of the game aren't even the balance team. It's, overall, entirely irrelevant to your point about the game's balance philosophy changing over the last four years, and yet you felt it relevant enough to mention.

That aside, I want to discuss 2019 as someone who wasn't here to form memories of it. It appears that, back in 2019, BHVR's goal was "if everything is OP, nothing is" as perk impact seemed to be in general much, much higher then than now, but the issue is that everything wasn't OP. The meta was monstrously stale. Even ignoring BT, which you'd likely want to keep in this turning back of time, everyone had to use DS in another slot because of how potent it was. Beyond that, everyone either ran Dead Hard or Sprint Burst, Iron Will so they were quieter injured than healthy, and then their choice of a small handful of meta perks (albeit Self-Care seemed to be the pick). Nerfing those perks, then, is the logical outcome. Better to bring down a few strong perks than try and bring up every weak one - rather than risking buffs causing power creep ad infinitum, risk nerfs causing a lack of perk impact, which is more easily fixed.

And if we went back to 2019 the new additions would be unhealthy for the game then too. Red skill check ruin during the 3 gen strategy meta (which doesn't appear to be going away with the PTB changes) in a world where Pentimento exists? No thanks. Forever Freddy coming back in a world where Pain Resonance exists? Again, no thanks. There's more - BP BBQ&C coming back, meaning literally everyone runs it, further bolstering the Distortion vs Ultimate Weapon pickrate tug-of-war? Thana being a general action speed penalty again in a world where Skull Merchant exists? I could go on, but at risk of coming for your throne on DBDForums post essays, I won't.

We can't ever truly turn back time, and I don't think it'd even be good if we did - a rose tint is a powerful thing, after all. I still fully believe this game has never been more balanced, even if some perks paid the ultimate price of irrelevancy to get there. Sure, metas come and go, but not like they used to - you don't have to run BT to be able to unhook survivors anymore. You don't have to stand there mindgaming yourself in case the survivor you're looping has Dead Hard anymore. And going back to that wouldn't magically make the game more fun for anyone involved, and it'd possibly alienate a whole bunch of people who like the game we have now.

If that doesn't include you - if you don't find the game fun, I could tell you to maybe try out Civilisations, but it's probably better if we find ways to make it fun for as many people as possible instead. I look forward to your next essay on balance changes if you decide to write one.

I'd like to quickly address a few of your points here, as someone who experienced this game in 2019. Joined a bit earlier actually: late 2018, during Darkness Among Us. My opinions regarding this game are vastly different than yours: I genuinely believe the game was far better in the past than it is now. No matter the metric used to judge it.

The design philosophy in 2019 wasn't to make everything OP so nothing was, it was to make things fun and overall better for the game. This is mostly restricted to the early 2019, and there are outliers: Freddy's rework that I consider to be the worst change ever implemented into this game, and Mettle of Man on release is also a good example. But overall? Things were good.

DS changed from anti-momentum to anti-tunneling is a very good example. Adjustments were made for Legion, and Nurse lost 5 blinks / Omega Blink add-on combinations. The meta wasn't four slowdowns as we see today, and the maps hadn't been ruined. That doesn't mean everything was perfect, but I would go back to it without a drop of hesitation if I could. There is a reason why many people think 2019 was peak DBD.

I don't like the argument of "rose tint", it has always been a massive pet peeve of mine. Many of us have a very clear memory on everything regarding the old game, both the good stuff and bad.

However, OP states they would like to see most things redone after the reversion. So many of the problems you listed you be addressed following this post suggestion. A full reversion that would keep everything intact is rarely ever suggested here.

  • I don't think it would work, to be honest.

Competitive would be a miserable experience few are really interested in. Casual would just be a mess between people who don't even want to touch the objective / people who want to win but without dealing with the extreme sweat of the competitive mode.

It just doesn't work. I stand by my opinion that DBD is not a competitive game, it never was and it never should be. It can be taken to the extreme on outside tournaments but that is the key word: outside.

MMR doesn't enable a competitive scenario, in my opinion, it is just a failed replacement for ranks.

That doesn't mean I agree with everything that is said here, but I believe these Forums have their fair share of good suggestions. Like the option to play on old maps (I should really emphasize the word "option" here, considering what happened on my last thread about this topic) or giving BBQ, WGLF and Prove Thyself their bloodpoint gains back.
