Are devs actively trying to ruin 2v8?
Honestly, not hyperbole, serious question. This invoking salt thing is such an absolute curveball of a timewasting mechanic. Idk who pitched that particular idea or why literally anyone else agreed and thought it would be a beneficial addition to 2v8. Compounding that by making one of the challenges to place 10 salts? Encouraging people to waste time rooting through chests to do this absolute grind of a challenge? Not a good shout.

Yeah I played a few games today and a lot of people were evidently just focused on getting the quest/s done. They were searching for chests and not gens (ngl i was too a lot of the time lol). Salt is way too rare for the amount of people looking for it, though perhaps that's the devs way of trying to reduce queue times by having people play more survivor games to find that darn salt lol
I mean I am absolute one of those survivors unfortunately because like many, I am willing to throw games to get limited time challenges done. But yh finding 10 is ridiculous. And I'm pretty sure it's bugged because i know for a fact I've placed more than my challenge progress shows
I agree it's more of a waste of time than not, but if people join in - 4 people with a 5% haste boost is quite nice
Yeah it was pretty obvious it was there to slow the game down. I haven't done it once because doing gens is just better especially after they you know, buffed the gen class.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was an attempt to purposely slow the game down a bit. Thats a pretty common complaint is that the games often go too quickly. And secondary objectives are usually recommended to forcefully break the game loop and make it last longer. And in my games it definitely works because it’s usually like an 8k if everyone tries to do the salts lol
Play scout if you want the salt, you get a key and give other people a chance to get it too via rummage
2v8 is a fun goofy mode, as long as you are having fun who cares. I think some people take this mode too seriously lol
Yeah I find the salt a good idea its fun feature.
It's a huge killer buff adding that nonesense in. People are just sitting around instead of doing gens. Add in that the quality of survivors is already pretty bad and my survivor matches have mostly been killer wins so far.
It's a fun addition, people want to try it out. But of course it is time consuming and you are sitting ducks while you do it. I wonder if "Invocation Grab" is a score event?
Once again it does lend itself to being more effectively used by SWF…
Every match is basically a chest simulator
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this is a test run for a potential invocation perk rework in the future
To be honest it is something survivors choose to interact with. If they don’t use it then basically nothing changed, most survivor classes are still op, there are still these things that can remove a hook state for free and killers will still struggle against the average teams.
Only the people who finish the circle, I believe.
Thanks for the feedback here, folks! I'm happy to pass along your feedback about the time requirement on this being a point of friction. That aside, though, is the effect something you find interesting or valuable?
You're correct. Survivors that complete the circle will receive its effects.
Which makes it pretty lacking in value. It should have global effects (which could randomly shuffle amongst a few different things) and should maybe give Elusive while doing it. With all the free aura read it's just getting ignorant, unaware players killed.
I don't think the devs are intentionally trying to ruin anything. They just can't help it.
Their checklist includes:
✅Does it make DbD more of a grind?
and not:
❌ Does it make DbD more fun?
And it's a crying shame.
This salt mechanic is just more of the same.
I love the circles fantasy, it's great for early game but it really doesnt offer much for late game.
I feel you could maybe make it more valuable for like late game interaction with more risk like maybe exposed while doing it or something. I'm not sure what though it's just an idea.
I don't think it needs to be faster or slower though.
For the amount of time it takes and for it to only apply to the ones in the circle it doesn't feel worth it. It feels selfish sitting in the circle for something that'll only apply to me/others in the circle when we could've been on a gen or splitting up and rescuing/healing teammates. Unlock everyones secondary power and as cogsturning said give it a random shuffle of useful effects - could make it so those sitting in the circle get higher/longer lasting effect to try to encourage more survivors to sit in the circle.
I used to be like that for every challenge too I did all the past rifts with old tomes but now only if I actually get some cosmetics I throw game for challenge. Most anyway I get done automatically playing normally. Looking current 2vs8 the rewards it does not look neccessary you to have to do every challenge to get them. But the current requirements to find 10 salts definetely is big ask... Not worth to do.
I got the haste in one game even I didn't sit in the circle maybe a bug? I though everyone would get it globally even if just one player sit and completes the ritual.
I got kicked out of a circle by aura read killers and when it was completed without me I recall not getting anything. I had another match where four invocations got done (that I wasn't part of) and I don't recall getting the haste on any of them either.
I was running towards a couple in a circle and it finished before I reached them, didn't get the haste buff.
It also decays, starts at 5% and last for 5 minutes. Every minute the buff drops by 1%
Personally I'm not a fan of the effect either. Long lasting haste isn't great for balance and accessing the after hook powers for each class doesn't seem too useful or necessary.
I'm sure there's other effects could be used to make it more interesting. Perhaps it could summon a purple item, upgrade/refill held items, provide a bp bonus. Also sonce killers can't interact with the ritu beyond chasing survivors off of it, there could be a way for killers to ruin the ritual and gain a reward.
If the killer can see your aura after completing a gen then it’s basically a “please kill me” feature.
When a gen gets completed they just see the aura of survivors who haven’t a hookstate yet
I have yet to actually activate one of these after 15 2v8s, but they certainly are causing lots of thrown matches as the other survivors search chest after chest to set one up.
Edit to add: well saying the above apparently was enough to actually make it happen, though both times I did it when it wasn't really important. Once I was on death hook and just found one already set up, as I was trying to not get tunneled went ahead and did it. Second one I found one in a chest, set it up way out of the way, and after all the gens were done I went back and did it just for progress on the quest.
Which is wild for an effect that's limited to certain people, is barely noticeable, is a time sink, and gets hit by Diminishing Returns.
I like some of these ideas. It's cool you can place it where you want. It's nice that you're not broken. The graphic is cool. I'd like to see these things applied to 1v4 invocations. Then maybe they'd not be trash.
I already made a post about it: I don't like the new FOMO and killer slowdown feature in 2v8 — BHVR https://share.google/U069VI5v2ag3Xu3zk
The reward is not worth the time investment for opening chests and spending 40 seconds with being afk. I think the idea is good but it needs to be something more unique and worth the time and investment:
My idea: Make it an one time use and increase the time to 60 seconds (for one player and less the more players join) and once it is done every survivor gets a bonus based on their class for the next 5 minutes - like guide works 5% faster on gens, Escapist vaults 20% faster, scouts get a one time Last Stand effect, and Healer give their teammates a speedboat when they take a protection hit (Duty of Care).
This would make the Invoking feature more interesting since each class gets a unique buff that can be used for some fun interaction. The effects are also only exclusive to the Invoking feature.
I was originally putting the circle near edge map, and ended up on it by myself. Started plonking it down near multiple survivors on a gen and everyone would come on over lol easiest way
The gamemode is just overexposed, its been brought back way too many times and no matter what killer they add and what gameplay addition, it is beyond boring. Give it a years break. Where is the prop hunt game mode? Or even the swapped player perspective with third person killer they teased last year?
I could be the odd ball out here but I quite enjoy the salt rituals. I think the visuals and sound effects to it are really amazing too!
After using the Invoking Salt in a few matches, I think it is a nice addition, the bonus is reasonable and it does create a little "moment" with the other players in what is normally a crazy match where you are running past each other mostly. And it's good that someone can join halfway and still get the benefit.
To improve for next time, I would reduce the time to place the circle as this seems weirdly long. And speed up the kneeling animations, at least the standing up one, to make a quicker getaway when a killer is approaching.
It was fun to loop a couple of killers around some objects an extra couple of times with the haste! It offsets some of the extra haste killers get from the various classes.
I tried that, had a group that just watched me the entire time I did the ritual. I guess they already finished the "complete 3 ritual" quest. 😂
Damn lol possibly they don't read the gameplay details. I had a Huntress run up and stop and circle like 'what the heck is that??' Lol
I wouldn't call it a huge killer buff, because it is completely optional, survivors don't have to do it and don't have any downsides not doing it
I've checked 10 chests and found exactly zero salt.
If it wasn't for the time limited quests you have to do, I wouldn't have touched that stuff by now. And why did they implement it as quests? Because they need survivors to somewhat keep killer queues remotely bearable.
If you ask me, that was the main reason to implement a survivor objective like this in the first place. Implement it and give the people quests they need to do if they do not want to miss out on the event rewards.
Tbf that I agree on, the visuals and lightning look really cool. I just dislike the slowdown where everyone is yanking on padlocks all game.
if it came back with all killers or all killers+ perks for each side that would be pure chaos and would probably be exciting.(bugs? balance? who cares..)
They are doing it though, in every one of my matches. Hopefully it dies down when people get their Quests done. They know what they were doing when they made it a Quest.
I don't mind the mechanic itself, though I probably wouldn't usually bother with it.
But what really gets my goat is BHVR tying it to completing a stupidly long fetch quest that you need to finish to unlock the fomo rewards. I've just spent an hour playing against the sweatiest KWFs imaginable failing to get more than one of those stupid salt circles placed down. I've spent nearly entire trials opening 6-10 chests and not found a single Invoking Salt. It doesn't help that some games I'm spawning next to the killer and have no time to go looking for chests, only to be rescued and find myself immediately in chase again because Killers have learned the cage spawn locations.
I've never been so frustrated playing this game and if there are any more quests involving these stupid things, I'm going to forget about unlocking those charms because it's just not worth my sanity (being an Alien fan, I was really looking forward to this 2V8 too).
It's been a miserable experience altogether so far.
Today already felt the difference from people being done with the salt quests. From survivor side they felt much better because it was no longer half+ of the lobby just focusing on chests/rituals.
Feels worth it and fun to me. I play mostly Scout and open chests very quickly on my way between gens with my key. Plus, Scout's unlock skill is very good, so completing the ritual is already worth it to me if I haven't been caged yet. Torchbearer probably gets the least amount of value from unlocking their skill early, but the Haste helps everyone, especially Escapists, connect tiles more easily.
Seems like a well thought out mechanic, but requiring placing the salt down for a Quest was probably a bad call… 😅
IMO, the time to do the ritual is not that big a deal — the time to open every chest on the map and not find salt is the big deal.
Supposing that you find some salt on the first try and you get 3-4 people to unlock their powers early, that can be helpful. But it can also not be helpful, either.
You are right after playing more didn't get the haste anymore. That one game I just ramdomly got it even I wasn't in the circle.
I'm still having very mixed results. Today I had a match against a Xeno and a Nemesis that were absolutely terrible. They missed pretty much all their ranged attached and whiffed their M1s. It was a 7k that shouldn't have happened, but people were doing invocations instead of gens. I ran the Nemesis for 2 mins at match start and one gen got done because four people were doing an Invocation. Next match, same killer combo, equally bad players, same problem. In both of those matches there was one person who did three full invocations. They're as useful as a dead teammate when they appear, and bad killers are winning in my matches solely because the survivors aren't doing gens.
How does it get hit by diminishing returns? There's nothing else that gives you haste other than the Escapist sprint burst, and that only lasts a few seconds.
