Explain matchmaking to me

How is a P4 Trapper vs an entire full SWF P100 squad a fair match up exactly ? I set up two traps on the ground and 3 gens popped. I'm not even sure how that's even possible within about 30-35 seconds ? I have the recording. Idk maybe gen rush is getting wild again ? Like what exactly is the formula for match ups ?

  • I’ve been complaining a lot about this recently. Short answer: there is no functional matchmaking system. I don’t believe anyone who says that there is for a single second. I’ve had dozens of recent examples of literal brand new players in my solo queue lobbies recently (I have multiple thousands of hours). Just a couple days ago there was someone with 0 hours in the game. I’ve never seen this supposed matchmaking system actually work correctly.

  • Oh and I will add…are perks part of the formula ? Bc I had JUST switched my main build to a meme build to get people in basement just for ######### and giggles…and the two people I downed and carry MYSTERIOUSLY had power struggle…firstly I NEVER see anyone using it but the ONE TIME I switch to basement perks half the team has it ? Same thing happened last time when I switched from my exhaustion build and then EVERYONE had sprint burst and lithe. Like it's strange sometimes how it feels it's calculating what best counter what you have equipped.

Well I'm not "new" but P4 on Trapper can let you know I'm not really that good or taken much time on him you know. And like it just felt strange that my first match up was against a full swf with fully p100 characters. I don't even think I have a p100 character

Explain to me what prestige has to do with matchmaking?

  • Idk I don't put points in killers I don't use and to me it means I'm not using them. Idk about you I'm talking about me lol

  • Supoosedly you have a base MMR and then individual killer MMR. So if you have a pretty steady above average KR you'll likely have a fairly high base, which can make picking up killers you don't know hard. I try a new-to-me killer and the survivors all know the power back to front and I'm just clueless. It makes me hesitant to try any killer that's been out awhile but that I don't already have a grip on.

    What were the survivors' builds?

it's unfortunate but I remember when bhvr tried to separate the mmr between killers and it made those matches kind of a wash for survivors since I felt like I was clearly above the lobby. I may be a Legion master but switching to Clown/Slinger I was facing yellow perk lobbies

Okay but at the same time I don't understand how being a good survivor means I'm a good killer. Those two mmr should be separated bc they require WILDLY different skills.

  • It's the fact I cannot find a single lobby under p90 and without everyone having finesse, lithe, unbreakable and decisive strike. The survivors in my teams are NEVER this prepared…I wish they were….like this is insane…

Prestige is completely irrelevant for Matchmaking. And it does not really matter if you go against someone with multiple P100s on their Main or on a Survivor they never play and is therefore on a low prestige level.

@cogsturning explained it to you. You have an overall MMR and a specific Killer MMR. If you are overall pretty good on Killer, your overall MMR will also be quite high. However, if you pick a Killer you almost never play, your overall MMR will determine the Matchmaking. Because in the end, you might play a Killer which is unfamiliar for you, but you will not lose your general experience on Killer. So a match will probably be quite rough.

After a while, the MMR on that specific Killer will adjust and be on a lower Level. So you will end up facing weaker opponents as Trapper and stronger opponents on your Main for example.

  • Well from my experience with matchmaking on killer, when xeno came out i think i overplayed it and won too much, as thats when i ended up bringing all my other killers up to the "softcap" minimum. And every 2nd round as xeno is an absolute sweatfest compared to any other killer in the roster since i play all of them randomly. So playing 1 killer allot, will give you harder teams and swfs for the most part.

But its also not that simple as i remember when we had dailies for certain killers, and i never play demogorgon much but was just trying to do a daily for fully charged shred hits. The ttv swat team i had was calling out my every fart, following my every move, always dropping on pallets for pallet/flashlight saves, and i wasnt even trying i was just going for full shred hits not even going for downs lol and they were ridiculing my choices and making fun of every move i made while not understanding i wasnt trying to win lol. So even a killer you barely touch can get the avengers squad for some reason. Either cuz their mmr killer left their lobby and plopped me in there or something.

Prestige doesn't have much to do with the matchmaking, everyone has a p100 somewhere, i've got about 9.5 of them.

Its definitely there, but theres not much separating brand new players from vets. I've been 2 hooking everyone who brings me cakes during this event, which kinda led to ALOT of 4 man outs and thus my MMR nosediving. I could definitely noticing I was going against alot of newbies with 1 guy legit being SO brand new that I was his first match (I let that guy live, even though he had no cake). I decided yesterday that I was done with that and within 10 matches... im back to experienced teams.

  • probably that swf was waiting in queue for X time and BHVRs logic says if you exceed Y you get pushed to the front of -any- matches. Skill doesn't matter, time does. The single sole time Bhvr truly prioritized skill content creators cried they couldn't find matches and BHVR reverted their change asap.

  • The matchmaking prioritizes wait time, ping, and fairness in that order. If a high MMR SWF has been waiting for a long time, it will serve up any killer, and you just drew the short straw.

  • Matchmaking in this game doesn't make sense at the best of times, and should have long been a priority for the devs. Apparently an announcement is coming soon regarding their SBMM overhaul.

  • There is also a chance another killer dodged before you went into the lobby so you got backfilled into lobby made for someone else. lobby dodging causes it to fill the spot with no regards to MMR,

I notice in a lot uneven matches that someone dodges the lobby. That is also why sometimes if you notice someone leave lobby bunch of others start leaving too, because they know balance for match is gonna be wonky.

  • Behaviour has not published the current MMR expansion intervals or the exact formula used by the matchmaker.

However, during the 2022 matchmaking tests, Behaviour stated that the default system used roughly the following values:

    • Initial search range: approximately ±50 MMR
    • Maximum search range: approximately ±500 MMR
    • Time to reach the maximum range: approximately five minutes

They should not be treated as confirmed values for the current 2026 matchmaking system, since Behaviour has since adjusted factors such as the maximum search range, expansion speed and effective high-MMR cap.

Okay this actually explains a lot bc I had a queue time of 7m so either they or I got put in the max range MMR…that is a crazy flawed system

  • No little piggy in the basement.

Trap one up, put em on a hook,

one little piggy in the basement! 🎶

  • Behaviour has not officially published the current minimum and maximum MMR values.

Based on datamining and community research, the commonly cited estimates are:

    - Minimum MMR: approximately 0

    - Starting MMR: approximately 650

    - Maximum MMR, or hard cap: approximately 2,100

    - High-MMR range: approximately 1,800 and above

It is important to note that 1,800 is not believed to be the maximum possible MMR. Behaviour has used 1,800+ as a definition of “High MMR” in published statistics, while the estimated hard cap is closer to 2,100.

    A commonly suggested breakdown is:

    - 0–649: lowest or protected range

    - 650–899: new or lower-MMR range

    - 900–1,399: general matchmaking range

    - 1,400–1,799: higher-MMR range

    - 1,800–2,100: high-MMR range

However, these exact values are not fully confirmed by Behaviour. The 0 minimum, 650 starting point and 2,100 hard cap mainly come from datamining and community testing, so they may change without being publicly announced.

The safest conclusion is that the estimated MMR scale runs from 0 to around 2,100, new players begin near 650, and Behaviour currently treats 1,800+ as High MMR.

I definitely agree. It's really unfair in both directions. And seemingly almost completely random. This was in December but on two separate days that I played survivor games, I made a note of all the killers and their prestige ranking that I went up against (at the time I think my highest prestiged survivor was maybe around P30-P40?)

    Day One:

    • P53 Trapper
    • P100 Blight
    • P3 Onryo
    • P5 Xenomorph
    • P81 Cannibal
    • P11 Animatronic
    • P7 Artist

    Day Two:

    • P2 Skull Merchant
    • P0 Trickster
    • P24 Huntress
    • P3 Houndmaster
    • P2 Lich
    • P8 Demogorgon
    • P19 Krasue
    • P3 Trickster
    • P3 Deathslinger
    • P26 Hillbilly
    • P4 Trickster
    • P3 Pig
    • P4 Blight
    • P100 Skull Merchant
    • P14 Nemesis
    • P0 Demogorgon
    • P2 Houndmaster
    • P14 Dark Lord

Even just looking at this now I'm totally convinced that there isn't any real MMR. There's zero consistency. I think that if there is any kind of MMR it comes an incredibly distant second to queue times, because there's no world in which going from P53 Trapper > P100 Blight > P3 Onryo in back to back games makes any sense.

  • Well, we could probably have something close to effective MMR but it's more important to split the que with an event every other week.

Several years ago they actually did try to implement a decent MMR system and the High tier sweat Killers had extremely long ques. Now that we have play while you wait system, it might actually work.

I simple fix will be to give tou the option ether for quick games or game closes to your mmr.but the will never fo that

Play while you wait essentially does the same thing for High MMR Killers without splitting the que.

Not necessarily. “Play While You Wait” preserves your place in the Killer queue while you complete a Survivor match, but Behaviour has not confirmed that it keeps High-MMR Killers in a narrower matchmaking range or produces opponents closer to their MMR.

It may help queue balance indirectly by moving some waiting Killer players into the Survivor pool, but that is not the same as creating a separate high-MMR queue or preventing the matchmaking range from expanding.
