TrU3Ta1ent Explains the Flaws in the New Matchmaking System Well

For those who do not pay attention to the youtube/streamer side of the games community, TrU3Ta1ent is one of the more prominent figures from that side of the spectrum. In his new video on the matchmaking system soon to be implemented, he does a very good job highlighting may of the inherent flaws with this system coming to the game. Whether you tend to find yourselves on the devs side more than not, it's a good video for understanding why so many are concerned and frustrated with the devs handling of such an important element to the game.

Scott Jund also did a great one.

  • ok..... so now what? you are going to ask us to watch some vid?

Idk how it can be of any value with how little we know at this point tbh.

But how about you just type up for us these "inherent flaws"?

  • I like the streamers but every single one of them is speculating

You can't talk about flaws in a system that you haven't seen yet. We literally know nothing of it.

In terms of MMR based ranking or whatever it is, I'm fairly certain it's the way other games like overwatch, Rainbow 6 and rocket League do rank.

Problem is what is determined as a deserved increase in skill or worthy decrease in skill level.

If I 4k too quickly to gain MMR or suicide on hook which should be something that negatively impacts MMR I want to know how your actions in game will be interpreted by the Devs in the new system.

  • Tru is good at the game and that’s it... he always contradicts himself so I tend to not watch him anymore.

    Me neither

This is why it annoys me when people are all sheep to Youtubers or streamers. Just because they make videos, they must be right! Nobody even knows how this new system will work, so just wait it out people. Who knows, it could be better, could be worse. Won't know until it's here

You never agreed with someone on certain topics and always had your own different opinion on things? You never consulted other people that may have some valuable input? As long as people are still critical on what these "influeners" are saying, I don't see the problem.

That said, it's obviously all speculation still but you can always try to predict what's going to happen or in this case try to pinpoint the flaws in the system. I watched Scott's video because it came out earlier and what he's saying does make a lot of sense to me.

You say fiarly certain but you have no idea what's it going to be

Could be something completely different from the games you mentioned

They never mentioned MMR. They just said that they would monitor the skill and try to match best according to that

Any complaints or arguments we do about it before we know at least some details is completely and utterly pointless

Criticism of the new ranking system beforehand isn't necessarily bad. It just highlights the importance of getting it right.

How do you for example say a player is playing well enough to be climbing the ranking or failing so much and falling.

A clown with a 2k could be at risk of falling and a hillbilly who 3k could be climbing even though the better skilled player is the clown.

It's good to speculate just let the Devs know whether their ideas are the best.

We don't want them to blindly walk into a system which just makes things a whole lot worse whilst fixing nothing.

  • I’m personally not a fan of Tru3, however, he makes a lot of good points in his video. First video he made that I actually liked in a long time.

Scott Jund actually made pretty good points on his video as well.

  • As much i'd like to agree with his video, Winning in games is somewhat black and white. I would say black and white version for DBD is that if more than 2 people escape the killer, than the entire survivor team should pip/win and if the killer kills 3 or more people, then the killer pips/wins. The concept of a draw and black piping is what makes ranking system a bit flawed. the whole emblem/ranking system is way too artificial for measuring skill and it encourages farming whether it be intentional or artificial. They're probably hiding rank because some players complained about matchmaking because they were using rank as reference to skill. rank does have correlation to skill, however all rank systems have grey zones. The change is positive but it is shame that we won't be able to see our value.

  • Anything has to be better than what they have now. It’s damn near impossible to win as solo survivor because everyone has boosted to red ranks. Red ranks are so watered down it’s ridiculous and it sucks seeing even the crappiest of killers getting more kills than they deserve.

Killer has never been easier. No more sweat gs great players. While its nice I know this is not how its meant to be when put against survivors that are meant to be at the top of the ranking system.

I’ll try anything new at this point.

This is absolutely correct. Many people put way too much stock in these streamers. These guys are wrong more than they are right. True is one of the more biased and tends to bloviate a lot on things, even when he is not in the know. He tried to talk about the leaked Doc changes and how they would make for a bad base kit, but was wrong on 80% of his assumptions.

I would not listen to these guys unless they have the background to put weight to their words.

  • Most people seem to hate then dismiss some arguments and topics just because Tru3ta1ent talked about them and their favorite streamer disagrees, it's pretty ugly. Tru3 is ultimately right about most of it but that doesn't reach those people.

I disagree. Killer fluctuates from nigh impossible to win to so easy you could be asleep.

I think that part of the problem with Killer's frustration is, like you said, is that Survivors are boosted to Red Ranks.

Tru3 isn’t a dev: It doesn’t take a dev to understand what MMR is and how it affects a game, and tbh most of the time the Devs don’t act like devs.

Tru3 isn’t a time traveler: To be fair no one is a time traveler, unfair standard to hold anyone to.

Tru3 knows just as much as us: Tru3 may have the same information as we do, however, he knows how to break down the wording the devs choose to use in a manner most people aren’t able to, and if you able to as well, you can predict what will happen. Watch Tru3’s video in comparison to Pauli’s Esther’s and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Stop taking his word for granted all the time. Remember him thinking GF was awful and now GF is played a lot and works well: Tru3 was right about GF being awful, the way GF is successful in his current state as a killer was because Tru3 popularized a new way to use his power, one no one had thought of.

Remember when he said New Doctor was gonna be awful but now he's turned out to be one of the most oppressive killers ever: New Doctor is actually not that great, he’s NOT a better Killer than before. One reason he is performing well is because survivors are still learning to adapt to his new play style. The only other reason he (and many other killers) are performing well is because the huge migration of skill-lacking survivors who have made their way into red ranks. Players who have quite a bit of experience in red ranks season after season can loop the Doctor all game without much effort.

  • You can depip if you stay for the entire game and the 3 other survivors DC.

Is that you True? Seriously, you are an expert in revisionism. True did not popularize anything. GF and the way True played him was already popularized by Monto and several others. In fact, you can almost time True's attempts to "create" builds and ideas after other streamers have already done it. True is a hack, and not even a good one. I've faced him before and he is extremely predictable. Compared to much better players, such as Zubatlel (whom I don't personally find entertaining in his streams), True is ok at best. I find his streams to be comical as he usually fails to identify his mistakes, instead blaming the game for them.

None of this matters though. Fan bois will defend, but we will all have to wait and see what happens.

    Yes Doctor is.

Whispers is super strong on him now

With Distressing and Calm Carter's notes and Calm Class III, his static blast's reach is ridiculously large and his Shock Therapy is much more consistent at loops.

Doctor is much better than he used to be. If you put the effort into finding out what works really well with him then you'll find some good results.

Again I have to disagree simply because he cannot do anything with longer loops, such as those on Blood Lodge, Coldwind or even most Autohaven pallet zones. Keep in mind this does not include infinites.

Now I’m not saying he is completely useless, but I don’t agree he’s any “stronger” than before. Simply because his static shock doesn’t recover fast enough at medium loops. He’s also easy to mindgame at medium size loops and those that break line of sight.

To counter your Impossible Skill Checks Claim, any killer who relies on a hex to provide immense amount of power is not a good example of a better killer. His add-on dependency also ‘supports’ this build. In short, It has to many variables that must be in place in order to be completely capitalized on.

No, not going for personal. Just saying people put way too much into what streamers say. I don't think BHVR has released details on their new system and for people to start attacking it is silly. Wait and learn. The amount of times people on this forum have thought the sky was falling due to a streamer's "thoughts" is insane.

Wait for details on the system.

Imagine thinking you can't make solid arguments for or against something that is not yet implemented or shown in practice.

A guy called Einstein comes to mind who figured things out by using logical thinking that only got proven right around 60 years after his death. I know this is an extreme example but it shows the flaws in your argument.

All you have to do is read what they put out there and understand the basic gameplay elements that go into scoring to understand that it can't work. Tru3 uses this logic. So do I.

  • @Elvenmonk said:

Preface: I have not worked on DBD in the slightest. However, I have worked on a few games and helped test Match Making (From here on MM) before. These were some issues we noticed and had to fix. I will also use pure speculation on the Match Making Rework( From here on MMR) as that is all we have and try my best to explain it from a outside developer's perspective who has had to do it before. I will also use an example of Twisted Metal PS3 (a game I did not work on) that had a great point based Match Making and how it died.

First, I want to talk about to current MM before MMR

Why do we keep getting placed with much higher ranks? This is a big question we have about the current MM. I am rank 10 why do I keep going against R1-4? Well, before dedicated servers we never had this issue to such a big extent. I bring up dedicated servers for a reason. Before when we were P2P you always got people within your rank who were online, few exceptions, but the ping was terrible. You could be in the US and play against someone in China. This resulted in bad ping

The devs fix? Dedicated servers. So, how do the servers work and why do they matter? Well, it is simple. Before with P2P you could play against anyone who was within your ranks. Now, when you login you are locked to a server. This server limits who you can play with. To use an example of past projects:

We had 6 servers in the US and Canada, 1 for Japan and South Korea, three for EU, one for SE Asia and Aus/NZ. So, if you were playing in US4 and you were rank 10 and needed 12 people to start a match but there were only 3 rank 10s and everyone else was rank 5. We filled the match with rank 5s. Where as if you were on US3 there were a bunch of rank 10s and if you were rank 5 and not enough rank 5s to play we through you in the rank 10s or whereever we could. The matches were better ping wise but not balance wise.

Why did this happen? We isolated the community. Which is what has happened in DBD. Without knowing how many servers they have, say the same set up, and a majority of their players are in South West Coast server and North East Coast Server (US 1 and 4 respectively if referenced from here on out), which is how ours were, if you are in the remaining servers you're pretty much boned. They have all the population. So you are given scraps which greatly reduces your pool. Even if every server had 100 people if you are rank 10 and over 80% of your server are rank 1-4 with 10% being below rank 15 you have a very limited pool to choose from. Then it will priorities low lag over ranks.

So say US 1 has this 80% R1-4, 10% R-15-20 and remaining 10% of inbetween and US4 is an even split of 25% for rank 1-4,5-10.11-15.16-20 you will have better matches on US4. This is why some players, like me, get bad MM and some get great MM. You're lucky to be in a good balanced server for your level whereas I am not.

Why roll out dedicated servers then? Everyone complained about ping. No one, devs included, predicted this mass fragmentation of the player base by rank. In a game like fortnite you won't notice this because you have tens of millions of players. In a game like DBD we have tens-hundreds of thousands. Much smaller base to split up with bigger skill levels. This is the grass is always greener issue. Before we had better ranking but worse ping. Now better ping but worse ranking. If we had more players this wouldn't be that big of an issue.

To sum up the current MM section: When they rolled out dedicated servers it fragmented the community in a way they did not see coming. So now, they have a new fix. MMR. Here's my explanation of that and why I think it'll work out better after sometime has passed. Also, the big flaw of it.

What will MMR do? We know it is a point based system. From point based systems I have seen and tested this is how they work.

You are assigned a skill rating. Usually at 50% starting. The more you mess up the lower it goes, the better you do the higher it goes. Hit a great skill check constantly? Up your rating. Constantly blow checks? Lower your rating. Escape? Raise. Die? Lower. Get a kill? Raise. get 4k? Big raise! Short chase? Raise! you get the picture.

Why is this good? Well, because rank is basically gone and a not easy to exploit a hidden point system, that can be adjusted privately*(see below) so no one will get upset if they de-rank and quit, will lead to better and more reliable matches. So, if you are rank 1 with 5% skill rating and I am a rank 13 with a 5% skill rating we can be matched. Theoretically we are similar. I will get into this later. But for the game we are equal. Sure you are R1 but our skills are the same. This will also fix the issue of bad teammates. If your skill rating is in the high 90's you will be paired with people as such. You won't have to worry about teammates not knowing to look for hexes, blowing gens, griefing, etc**(see below)... This is honestly really good for survivors! If you are good you will be teamed with good people around your skill rating despite their ranks. Killers? The same. You will have harder matches because you will be going against 4 people around your skill rating.

*added later: The benefit of an easily adjustable point system is say they gave too many points for hitting a skill check. They can secretly fix it and we'll never know. Any exploit the community finds out can be fixed without anyone knowing by editing a server config file. This helps the balance of the game greatly

** How will this end griefing and such for me? Well, think about it. If someone griefs they more than likely preform poorly. No one will be amazing and then throw the game by griefing their teammates. so the lower skill players will have this issue and as they grief their skill points can be lowered. Leading to overall better matches

So, let's go into the hidden number real quick. If your rank decreases there is a dumb psychological effect that makes you want to give up. It's a common theory in game design these days. It is why ranking up is so easy in games and why everyone is so high rank these days. Most games give everyone a high rank and then has a hidden skill rating system to balance you. With it being hidden we can't figure out how it works to game it or know if we are going down. Thus making those who give up easily stay longer. More players = better for everyone.

Theoretically we are similar: This part is my big issue with the skill rating. A rank 1 with 5% skill rating and a rank 13 with 5% may play the same but the rank 1 has better perks. This could lead to unfair matches for starter players. Going against bad killers/survs who are decked out with cheap meta perks. This could kill the early game for DBD unless the devs accounted for this and put people under certain rank/hours in their own queue as to prevent this.

What happens if your server doesn't have enough people in your skill rating? Well, they slowly increase the %, that's it. Unlike now where we pull whoever we can to fill the spot due to rank issues here we can just increase the skill %. This is a much more precise system which even leads to issues of you playing against people who aren't leagues better than you. Just slightly. Unless no on else is on.

Now, Twisted Metal PS3. They had the same skill rating system. I was always in the top 15 players in the game until I stopped playing and my skill rating was always a high 90%. This game tracked everything. Turbo spam, weapon spam, weapon hoarding, speed control, break control, etc. Just every aspect of the game. This led to a very balanced skill rating. However, due to bad P2P code and using odd ports the game functioned poorly online. Often using blocked ports. Which lead to people DCing due to their router. Due to players quitting MM went to poop and then people started to just use the match browser. Which then made skill rating pointless.

Why bring this up? It shows how even a great system can die due to bugs and a dying playerbase. If DBD dwindles more then no matter what MMR they do it will be for naught. While I am looking forward to a MMR things like playerbase happiness and bugs need to be addressed.

    Bonus topic!!!!!!

The great thing about the skill rating system is it could be applied to each killer, let's be honest survivor skins don't matter (says the surv main). Are you Rank 1 but bad with nurse? Well, get thrown into the low skill rating with nurse. Practice against people who are your skill rating. God tier with Legion? Play that upper %! So-so with Freddy? Play that so-so %. The skill rating, if done this way, could let us learn killers better. It will also let us play killers we're bad with without affecting our skill rating of those we are good with. We can go back to the ones we like and play them against our skill group and then test out new ones or learn them against the correct ratings.

Do I think the MMR will work? Not until 1-2 months after it comes out. This is because everyone will effectively be R20 again. It'll be the big mass rank reset everyone is begging for. This will result in lots of odd matches. After a month or two it'll sort itself out and everyone will be where they should be.

Do I think players will understand this? No, not in the least bit. If ranks are reset too then everyone will continue with how they are now not understanding the pointbased system and what it is doing. However, after the 2 months we should not see as many posts complaining about imbalanced matches unless ranks are still publicly displayed. Because again, people aren't understanding the points system. They only understand what can be directly seen to them.

Am I excited for it? In a way. I think it'll be better for everyone as long as the new player preventions are in place and the individual killer skill rating is in place.

I made a thread based off of my own actual work experience with such systems.

  • You don't need a YouTuber to tell you how to think. It is a simple matter. Hiding skill rating and later rank will make it look like they didn't fix matchmaking and hid this from us to get us to stop complaining.

They need to show us everyone's skill ratings on the end card, and I hope they go so far as to show the cross comparison that would explain how much rating we gained or lost (and why) when the match ends.

This isn't only a matchmaking issue. Most people want to improve their game play and to do so they will need this information.

ok..... so now what? you are going to ask us to watch some vid?

Idk how it can be of any value with how little we know at this point tbh.

But how about you just type up for us these "inherent flaws"?

You have access to youtube dont be lazy

  • Is he performing godlike again?

Imagine thinking you can't make solid arguments for or against something that is not yet implemented or shown in practice.

A guy called Einstein comes to mind who figured things out by using logical thinking that only got proven right around 60 years after his death. I know this is an extreme example but it shows the flaws in your argument.

Also the way you talk makes you seem like your age doesn't exceed the age of the game that you're arguing about.

Hang on..... are you comparing Tru3 to Einstein?

  • LMAO no. Just making an overexaggerated example to show the flaw in his logic. I don't agree with most of the things he says, other than the things he mentioned in the video.

I prefer Scott's views on most matters.

  • Im sorry, if OP wants to tell me/us something, its up to them to do so and not just say "hey some opinion is somewhere on the internet, go look for it"

The name of the younger is in the title of the thread and he said you should check them out

I like the streamers but every single one of them is speculating

You can't talk about flaws in a system that you haven't seen yet. We literally know nothing of it.

But like - we won’t see it too. I can see the benefit of that also though honestly. Bubba soon to be SSSS ++++ tier because red ranks can handle him better.

  • Remember all, it's all correct if it comes from the streamer you want to lick the a**e off 😂

  • People who don’t understand how MMR works < people who understand that MMR cannot work in dbd

You guys care more about streamers and their speculation. Make up your own damn minds. Stop being a follower.

Agreeing with someone isn't making up your mind to agree with them? Now i concur that blindly following opinion is bad, but a consensus is not a bad thing all of the time. What you should say is listen and gauge, and then decide if you agree with the opinion, parts of it, or none of it at all.
