  • I'm still salty about NetEase terrible management and closing of Super Mecha Champions, so bit suspicious of Rivals even though I started playing it.

Venom could work with creativity but Marvel would have to be okay with it being 18+ rated version instead of the PG13 we got in the film. Still wish the Xenomorph we have was better before they add another alien.

I'm sorry to hear that. MMR is bad for newer players and Wesker as well as Nurse and Spirit or Blight are difficult to verse for inexperienced players. But they are beatable. Just continue in getting better and improving. Go and watch loop tutorials on YT like those from OhTofu and I also think Otzdarva has also something similar. Use Windows of Opportunity to see where loops are and learn how to look back during the chase. You will improve as long as you don't just hide.

When I was in a similar situation back in the day I used all the perks that caused the killer to find and chase me so I needed to learn it.

    Don't lose hope!

I have thousands of hours already. But it doesn't matter in solo queue when you have a queue system that will prioritise wait time over MMR. I am not going to study videos to git gud, I'm controller player with some disabilities. It just would be nice not to have to be thrown into these matches as someone else's grind fodder.

  • I honestly paid no mind at all to how it affected other players. I loved that we had abilities and could multiply BP gains. I don't know if me bringing cake meant others could get abilities. By the end of the event I finally figured out how it worked as killer as the abilities HUD, Avoid Stun/Expose was a bit confusing. Same with survivor and the number of swirls. Sometimes only two other players brought cake. I'm not going to begrudge other players for not bringing them. I have loads on Sadako but only a few on Jill and she is already P6 so I didn't want to spend hard on her.

  • My success rate as solo queue survivor - I've not survived a single match against him. I feel like there is literally nothing you can do against him. I'm not that good at looping. I am not a sweaty SWF player. Maybe it's my personal skill ceiling; I have yet to face a "bad" Wesker.

I hate how MM works in this game. If it's quiet time not enough killers on, it's Wesker, Nurse and Spirits that 4K at 5 gens, that are way above my skill level.

  • I feel like Wraith is powerful enough with his kit as it is. High mobility and stealth, and the add-ons give a lot of flexibility.

  • I like the idea of having some longer cooldown to counter players who team up to flash (kind of like getting stun chains in other games) but the perk Lightborn is what you need. I think from a survivor POV it wouldn't be as fun to have someone else blinding the killer mean you have to wait longer. It's already hard enough trying to pull off a blind.

So why should flashlight be useless cause how blinding works fix the blinding animation

Players have been complaining about the blinding animation for years. It hasn't been changed. But I'd also point out the way it is often used by teams to bully killers with bodyblocking etc. Lightborn is just good self-care.

  • Honestly wish I could disable hearing voice lines from certain killers and survivors. I'd argue there has always been a bit of a theme park element to DBD. It's getting a bit much with so many. Wesker constantly grates on me. Trickster and Cenobite are probably the only two I enjoy with lines.

  • I feel like this would make him OP.

Splitting the queues is the best option, because then they can actually balance them as different modes. For example lets say they made ranked mode the SWF mode and solo queue is unranked. They could give survivors some buffs in the solo queue mode like free kindred, or nerfing the killer in some way to balance the fact that they are solo. Then for the SWF queue, they could make tweaks to nerf the survivors, maybe they just flat out run slower, or they have to repair more gens, or the gen time is increased, or the killer just gets free bloodlust 1 all the time, some kind of mechanic to balance out the fact that the survivors are on discord.

I think there needs to be a way to also allow for SWF who are not as competitive. I've played with some friends on Discord and actually one of the reasons they quit DBD was it getting too sweaty and unfun.

  • Could be delayed til after the event.

  • I have found it quite hard to get the exposed effect in chase with a survivor. It only pops up after some time in chase where you first are given the option to block being stunned. I think it could help getting some killer adepts though, so not surprising to me that it is being used a lot.

I'm simply talking about some peoples goals. Sure, some people don't play games to win. But there are always going to be a group of people that do. And if you get upset at people for doing that, that's on you and/or the developers for allowing them to do the things they do. Not the player. But much of the hate around this subject is directed toward the person doing the thing, not the people that allow the thing to happen.

Its like, imagine that it was totally legal to commit some kind of crime that we have today. You shouldn't get mad at the person for committing that "crime" so to speak, but at the people who are allowing such a crime to not be a "crime".

A good example of this might be taxation of "the rich". People get mad at rich people because they "don't pay their fair share of taxes" but the reality is, the tax code is what is allowing them to do the things they do. They shouldn't be mad at the people for using the tax code to their advantage, they should be mad at the government that makes it legal for them to do so.

This whole problem is actually typically why games tend to have a "Ranked" and "unranked" mode. In DBD there really isn't an "unranked" mode that you can queue up for. The "Unranked" mode is the custom games because it doesn't use matchmaking. It could also be argued that there is no ranked mode because you can't see how well you are doing in comparison to other people. This is just one of the many problems DBD has, and why i think they should create a "ranked" mode that is for SWF only, a "ranked" mode that is solo queue only, and another that is unranked completely. Or, if they are worried about splitting the player base, you should have ranked mode ONLY be SWF, or ONLY be Solo queue, and then balance that mode with that in mind. And actually do things based on that. They could also balance the game different in those modes. Like for example in CS:GO where unranked mode gives you more money, and free armor and defuse kits, whereas ranked is much more strict with money and doesn't give you free stuff.

I agree. I think people complain as if somehow pleading to the community will make it stop, it's pretty sad to see. It's frustrating seeing developers overlook issues that are driving players away from their games. I also understand with such a big game they would want to make conservative changes.

I don't really know how BHVR could address this division without creating different queues like you say. I think moving to SBMM wasn't a good idea to begin with but it is true some asked for it. I'd probably try have a ranked mode for those who want to be challenged. It wouldn't necessarily stop bully squads from queuing social/unranked/casual. A hidden MMR for casual could counter it. I don't think solo queue has improved much for status hud, even with SBMM it's nowhere on par with SWF. Maybe ping system that could only be used sparingly (I hate ping spammers and it could ruin immersion for some, so maybe being able to turn it off).

It's interesting to me though (slightly OT) that different games can bring out different gamer types in me. I can be very achievement/win oriented and will do brute force repetition if it works. I have to reign it in though because it can really affect my mood and enjoyment.

If you are specifically not using a strategy because it is "unfun" even if it is effective, then your goal is not to win. Inherently that makes you a "scrub" by definition, and i don't mean it as some "rude" term, its more of a "clinical" definition.

I post this a lot here, but i think it bears repeating in this case. I would suggest reading the free E-Book "Playing to Win" by game designer David Sirlin. https://www.sirlin.net/ptw.

Here is an excerpt from the book that i feel is most relevant here:

    Introducing...the Scrub

The derogatory term “scrub” means several different things. One definition is someone (especially a game player) who is not good at something (especially a game). By this definition, we all start out as scrubs, and there is certainly no shame in that. I mean the term differently, though. A scrub is a player who is handicapped by self-imposed rules that the game knows nothing about. A scrub does not play to win.

Now, everyone begins as a poor player—it takes time to learn a game to get to a point where you know what you’re doing. There is the mistaken notion, though, that by merely continuing to play or “learn” the game, one can become a top player. In reality, the “scrub” has many more mental obstacles to overcome than anything actually going on during the game. The scrub has lost the game even before it starts. He’s lost the game even before deciding which game to play. His problem? He does not play to win.

The scrub would take great issue with this statement for he usually believes that he is playing to win, but he is bound up by an intricate construct of fictitious rules that prevents him from ever truly competing. These made-up rules vary from game to game, of course, but their character remains constant. Let’s take a fighting game off of which I’ve made my gaming career: Street Fighter.

In Street Fighter, the scrub labels a wide variety of tactics and situations “cheap.” This “cheapness” is truly the mantra of the scrub. Performing a throw on someone is often called cheap. A throw is a special kind of move that grabs an opponent and damages him, even when the opponent is defending against all other kinds of attacks. The entire purpose of the throw is to be able to damage an opponent who sits and blocks and doesn’t attack. As far as the game is concerned, throwing is an integral part of the design—it’s meant to be there—yet the scrub has constructed his own set of principles in his mind that state he should be totally impervious to all attacks while blocking. The scrub thinks of blocking as a kind of magic shield that will protect him indefinitely. Why? Exploring the reasoning is futile since the notion is ridiculous from the start.

You will not see a classic scrub throw his opponent five times in a row. But why not? What if doing so is strategically the sequence of moves that optimizes his chances of winning? Here we’ve encountered our first clash: the scrub is only willing to play to win within his own made-up mental set of rules. These rules can be staggeringly arbitrary. If you beat a scrub by throwing projectile attacks at him, keeping your distance and preventing him from getting near you—that’s cheap. If you throw him repeatedly, that’s cheap, too. We’ve covered that one. If you block for fifty seconds doing no moves, that’s cheap. Nearly anything you do that ends up making you win is a prime candidate for being called cheap. Street Fighter was just one example; I could have picked any competitive game at all.

Doing one move or sequence over and over and over is a tactic close to my heart that often elicits the call of the scrub. This goes right to the heart of the matter: why can the scrub not defeat something so obvious and telegraphed as a single move done over and over? Is he such a poor player that he can’t counter that move? And if the move is, for whatever reason, extremely difficult to counter, then wouldn’t I be a fool for not using that move? The first step in becoming a top player is the realization that playing to win means doing whatever most increases your chances of winning. That is true by definition of playing to win. The game knows no rules of “honor” or of “cheapness.” The game only knows winning and losing.

A common call of the scrub is to cry that the kind of play in which one tries to win at all costs is “boring” or “not fun.” Who knows what objective the scrub has, but we know his objective is not truly to win. Yours is. Your objective is good and right and true, and let no one tell you otherwise. You have the power to dispatch those who would tell you otherwise, anyway. Simply beat them.

I disagree with the premise that the core objective of a game is for the player to win. Personally I have more fun not prioritising winning. I can win but did I have fun doing it? Not always. There's a bigger picture at play that game designers should understand different gamers get value out of different things. I feel like this strategy is for one player type "the killer" when some of my fun as killer probably more resembles a hybrid of explorer/socializer. And the interesting thing is a larger portion of players are social type, and I think games that allow for repetitive strategies to dominate (i.e. tunneling, spawn-camping, stun-locking) tend to lose players this way. So a designer has to work novelty back into the experience for players to help mitigate player churn.

    https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/article/bartle-s-player-types-for-gamification

  • It's hard mentally keeping track of hook count per survivor.

  • Leon has a super long scream. Never really noticed it before til this event.

  • It depends on my mood. I play both sides.

As survivor, I love playing characters I identify with. Like this aspect is so cool in itself, being able to run around in a game that feels like your in a horror film with the thick atmosphere, lighting. I've been a horror film fan since a child when they used to terrify me. I enjoy playing supportive roles in games, and in DBD I'm the one unhooking and healing. I'm terrible at looping, but I enjoy the excitement of hiding and watching, staying alert, waiting to assist teammates. I also enjoy just hopping on a gen and having to look out for the killer, or the thrill of trying to complete a gen so we can escape, and attempting to rescue someone downed during EGC.

As killer I have had such fun just chasing players around the map, the sandbox is great to play the scary boogeyman and have fun interactions, it's really fun to me teetering on that edge of "I could kill you but I won't, or will I?" I like that about DBD, you don't always know what to expect.

I like to "spread the love" and not focus the same player over and over as I know that feels bad. Yesterday I had a super fun match as Sadako in RPD and got her Adept. The setting felt perfect for this scary ghost girl. Sometimes the maps and characters just align in beautiful ways; like Wraith feeling like a predator in the cornfields, or Trickster chasing around Springwood with ricochet blades, or Doctor making players scream on Toba, or The Dredge teleporting to lockers on Backwater Swamp with survivors in them.

  • @CheesyBabyBoi said:

Meh, i think the fun of the game comes from chases and player interaction and something like a minigame while doing gens might be interesting, but it also kinda takes away from the feel of the game.

Doing gens is an objective, but the goal is to Survive.

I agree. Plus the simplicity of it helps the tension in what should be atmospheric horror. Player should be looking around whilst doing gen not feeling bored enough/only superficially engaged to tap out rhythms. It's why VHS failed, it tried to over-egg the pudding with gimmicks.

  • The way I see it, you got to enjoy feeling special for a whole two years, which is a long time in game-time. TBH people move on, players forget these are even a thing. Some players don't even know about the older anniversary flashlight or these weird halos that scream "I'm going to loop you til you cry". I've only ever seen one person wear one and I don't even think it's their main. Maybe 2-3 players total. I think it's cool BHVR made them available to newer players that missed out.

  • I wish we could do this too.

  • So you want to be able to instadown someone who was just unhooked? How is that fun for survivor?

  • @thefallenloser said:

don't understand why kate doesn't already have a taylor swift skin but ok :(

So people feel the match is futile after their first hook as the first chase over a min in? Because most of the time it happens it's game throwing/ruining early game. When it's 5 hooks with 0 gens done go for it but it still needs to be removed.

It could be obviously poor MM since the way it has been for years now, if either killer or survivors have been waiting too long they get to enjoy the "any match will do" MM fallback. This could mean a killer from another region, or one completely outside the skill level. So without addressing the deeper issue affecting MM bandaid things like removing hook suicide mechanic isn't going to do much.

Also a player could simply just not like that killer. Like I understand it if they are feeling "Oh no, not another Wesker, I'm out".

  • You can't just report in-game, it just flags the match with user IDs for BHVR. You need to follow up with a support ticket with video evidence so they can act. They don't tell you what they decided. It's annoying we have to upload to YouTube but it's free, and I just set it to unlisted.

I use NVIDIA Experience tool that records last 30 seconds (you can change the time and quality etc) it's perfect for reporting hackers and collecting cool game moments.

  • Weird way to invite discussion to be honest. You can't decide for others whether it is valid or not. Clearly that players are doing it, is valid reason for it.

It's a game, generally people play to have fun. If they are facing a killer they know outclasses them or match feels futile, you can try for low chance of escape. It's not rocket science.

  • Several possible reasons. Hard to infer without context.

    * Gloating at killer, especially if SWF

    * Tome challenge requires you leave last

    * Pity points - Waiting for killer to give last free hits because they failed to get any hooks

    * Solo Queue - Not sure if should help teammates situation, waiting to see

    * Waiting for other survivor to heal or get healed

  • It would be so cool to have a female Cenobite skin. Either 2022 or from the originals.

    * Look at the hatestorm that third episode of The Last of Us triggered, when you dare to depict two non-stereotypical gay men that challenge people's comfortable biases.

  • I love the new map visually, as a survivor. I love that it has a lot of hiding places. As a killer it feels too cluttered. The flying shadows from overhead also could do with dialling down. They are too overbearing and distracting.

Aiming the pods with the controller sticks is unpleasant and slow to respond, even with max sensitivity. And apparently around 118% of the entire surv needs to be visible as well.

Thanks for the warning. I won't be buying this killer. Controller experience is already poor compared to KBM in this game.

  • Feel like I've had non-stop matches with him and the new map. Must be a region thing.

  • Personally loving the new map as survivor, it's so vibrant, I can blend in with Jane's Prime summer outfit. But I am finding the shadows cast from the birds quite difficult visually, giving me some motion sickness. And there is a lot of noises on the map that is a bit too intrusive/distracting. I dread playing this map as killer.

The reason I don't like dodging is because it messes with matchmaking, and BHVR have confirmed this. Lobbies where 5 players are initially grouped up together are supposedly higher quality than lobbies where there is backfill, the killer leaves and another killer takes their place, etc.

So anything that encourages dodging will theoretically cause lower quality matches. Also the whole dilemma of people being tunneled out due to their prestige, etc. I just think the game would be better off with it hidden until the scoreboard.

Lobby dodging is one way selfish players are guaranteeing others get a worse game experience. BHVR know this is a problem with matchmaking yet they still haven't done a thing to fix it.

I never understand this "supporting the game" logic. When you play a game, you aren't supporting it, you're playing it. When you buy DLC or cosmetics, you are a consumer making consumer decision, you buy product, you get something from the exchange. You aren't donating to a charity, so don't feel like you can pat yourself on the back. "Oh I was there in the early days when only 100 players were playing it, it was some obscure game that didn't win any awards or anything." By the same logic, those early cosmetics should remain exclusive, because I was there, you weren't. Sorry you missed out from being in the exclusive cosmetic club.

No, I think exclusive time-limited cosmetics shouldn't be have forced scarcity because it is part of a cancerous live service paradigm, I think is outdated and a hang-over from early naughts game design. Now it is about player retention. I think games more likely to retain players if they don't have a FOMO environment, but one of abundance.

It is Rocket science for BHVR, hence why after 1 year of tests, a year and half of live MMR and some more parameters testing, we are still with the same problem. And BHVR's MMR system does not account for skill at all, it's just a prediction system as explained by BHVR. It will sort out lobbies based on winning predictions. So ofc the game has a really bad matchmaking, it's predicting 1 match result without taking into account what ever happened in every other match for those players or can happen for every players in this match. It just looks at kill rates for the killer player vs escape rates of the survivors. The more kills you have the more escapes the survivor you face will have.

BHVR's MMR is designed to counter WIN STREAKS and that's it. It's made to prevent guys like Otz from winning every match with the same Build.

Even if DbD's population is 100x bigger it doesn't mean it has 100x the quality. More population means tthe quality is more diluted.

DbD is a very simple Hide & Seek game, i don't understand why most people think it isn't and why they keep fighting against it when the objectively best part of every DbD match is finding someone and chasing them, that's where Killers feel like Killers and get to use their abilities and that's where Survivors fight their hardest to Survive. Why we have to deal with Gens and Gates and so manny Timers is beyond me. Give every match a 10 minute timer and let the entire match revolve around chases, if Killers gets 12 hooks they win obviously and if any Survivor escapes then that survivor also wins even if the killer got 11 Hooks and 3 confirmed kills.

This way, you eliminate the need for Gen Rush or Kill Rush. Camping becomes irrelevant because your Objective is Hooks and not kills, and you can Solve tunneling very easily aswell because everyone can come to bodyblock for the rescued survivor cause they don't have to be somewhere else, unless they are on death hook and injured, only in that scenario should they be avoiding direct contact with the killer.

With more chases more frequently, killers could handle most of the maps as they are since they'd be going through pallets very quickly because they'll be in chase constantly. This puts pressure on Survivors to learn their looping which is a whole lot better than dealing with M1 holders and you get no time to play as killers because gens are already done while you're chasing someone somewhere else.

Gens existing is the worse aspect of DbD. Without them we'd have a proper game and we'd be able to Balance it in every aspect. And it would make Solos and SWF the exact same thing.

I think they might be hampered by their population size to do anything meaningful. I've suggested before that they collect more metrics than just kills/escapes. Instead they do these limited data collection by surveys instead when they could be sitting on a goldmine of play data.

With a smaller studio, smaller playerbase, MM has to be taken seriously because it can kill the game. I think BHVR know, they can get away with conservative changes to the system, i.e. let's not rock the money boat too much.

‹ 1 2 3 … 15
