The most abuseable survivor perk in the game and it's unfair.
Ever since I started playing killer more I've grown to despise it more and I've since stopped using it. Sprint Burst is better but harder to manage and takes more effort to do so and I enjoy that, so I run sprint burst instead.
-
i highkey find it weird people sleep on clown so much. he's criminally underrated
Clown's 1v1 is really good
-
Their builds kind of look poorly optimised
Everyone having borrowed time seems inefficient. I think two people having borrowed time is enough, and two people having another perk to counter the killer such as WGLF would be more optimal.
Likewise, two people having Breakout.

I've never been bothered by endgame rage, but it's finally starting to get to me. Especially this game earlier on:
Team of three friends get killed, one of them gets angry and asks if I depipped, I say I safety pipped. Tune into their stream and they're ranting at length about how I'm giving the game a bad name and pathetic for caring about rank (I don't, they were the ones that brought it up).
I know this is common and bringing up this one case might seem silly, but I just wanted to get it off my chest that hearing things like this for so long really does have a negative effect on people.
I'm confused. They asked you about rank and you answered them accordingly and then they say you're the one who cares about rank? What?
If this is so, they're dumb. Sorry they were rude to you, but at least knowing they were stupid should give you some relief.
Personally I disable end game chat 90% of the time when playing killer to prevent stuff like this.

I main clown and billy but they are not in the same tier at all imo. Otherwise fair list though
I can understand that. I just personally think people underrate Clown heavily. Even before his rework he was a pretty strong killer IMHO. The list was hard to make since I think of it more of as a range rather than precise tiers. Clown to me is like upper echelon of C tier/entry-level B tier. Billy is solidified B tier to me.

What makes them distinct? Clothing, backstory, and character
-Sure, slap a jacket on Trapper and put on a different mask and he looks like a Jason wannabe. Same argument could be made with Billy, slap an apron on and he looks like a LF wannabe.
-Both of their stories focus quite a bit on loyalty (Jason with his mother, Trapper with his father). How ever Jason first killed because of revenge, Evan first killed because of his loyalty to his father.
-Evan never wanted to become a killer, he resisted The Entity's influence and this is shown by the metal hooks that are in his back, Jason on the other hand would be a lot more willing.
Jason is also shown using a variety of weapons, not just machetes.
Why do you keep up bringing up anything other than aesthetics holy scheisse
Putting an apron on billy would not make him look like leatherface. Their faces look entirely different. Trapper already has cosmetics that look similar to Jason's.
My argument wasn't about backstory or character. Or powers for that matter.
Trapper also uses more than just a machete.
I hate to say it but you're being incessantly ######### in arguing about this.
It's a dumb discussion anyway considering Jason isn't ever coming to this game, so it's not like you've achieved anything you wanted here. Ciao

Maybe I am being dense, but tell me, what are exactly the similarities here other than their both tall and muscular?
The better question is what makes them distinct?
Physique aside, the fact that you can simply slap a different mask on Trapper and add a jacket and he'd look like a Jason wannabe is the problem. You already have Trapper's H20 mask which looks more similar to Jason's mask.
Not seeing anything distinctive about their weapons either. They're just machetes with a non-distinctive look.

But Hillbilly was also centered around Leatherface's aesthetic, they're just 2 mentally challenged dudes who wield hammers and chainsaws who's backstories both focus around family and both lived on a farm. Yet here we are with Leatherface in the game
Your first argument of Trapper filling Jason's spot falls flat and I could of started off with this, but I wanted my fun ;)
Hillbilly and Leatherface look nothing alike. My specific point was that Trapper and Jason look similar, not just because Trapper is inspired by Jason. You're also trying too hard to split hairs here to contradict something I never talked about. What's next, Nurse and Spirit being very similar because they're both women? They look nothing alike. Hillbilly and Leatherface look nothing alike. Their (Hillbilly and Leatherface) lore is similar sure, but was I talking about the lore? No. Was I talking about their powers? No. Bringing up more irrelevant stuff.
You also are projecting. I never implied Trapper filled Jason's spot. I said I think it would be redundant to have two killers who look the same.
I also find it funny because I've supported my argument well, you lot have ignored it entirely and your comebacks involve bringing up irrelevant stuff. Your argument is the one that fell flat, and you're the one who took it too personally. Again, more weirdos being dense.

Saying "Jason is just a buff man in a mask and workerman's clothing", well I guess we never should of gotten Myers, that's all he is right? Or how about Ghost Face, he's just a hooded figure who wears a mask and wields a knife, just like Legion!
But guess what? Even if they look similar, they play ENTIRELY different! Crazy right?
You lot are oddly incenced about this topic to the point where you initially were lying about what I said and responding with things I never mentioned. Weird as hell
Myers mask is already very distinct due to him being a horror figure so there's not much of a distinction needed for that compared to Trapper, an original character. The particular issue of Trapper vs Jason is that Trapper's aesthetic was already centred around what Jason looked like and they already look extremely similar, and Trapper already has cosmetics that resemble Jason's to begin with. No one in this game confuses Myers for Trapper. Put Trapper and Jason side by side and they don't look that distinct from one another.
The Legion vs Ghostface example is also not comparable either. Ghostface's mask is already distinct, again being a figure in horror and their overall aesthetic is different. Legion's cosmetic for the most part is generally very urban, Ghostface's cosmetic is...Ghostface, which again is already distinct from the source it came from. No one also confuses Ghostface for Legion or thinks they're similar in how they look.
Why the hell are you on my ass about whether or not they play different? I made no comment about their powers, nor did I say just because they look similar doesn't mean they operate similarly. I know nothing about Jason. I don't care. All I said is that I think having two killers who look the same would be redundant and you lot went on this weird ass tangent of responding to things I never said. Weirdos.

I just wanted to cover the basis on how he could be different mechanically. But there's a lot in a name.
I honestly know nothing about Jason and his lore or whatever so I have no idea how he would even operate in theory. I wasn't trying to infer that Trapper's ability is the same as what Jason does, I was simply saying they look extremely similar and I think it would be redundant to have two killers who look the same. Like so much the same that you could basically give Trapper a Jason cosmetic and all it would be is a mask and a worker jumpsuit and he would look exactly like Jason
The only other pair of killers in the game I can think of that look similar are Legion and Ghostface, and Ghostface and Legion's aesthetic is distinct enough to where they are not easily confused with one another

Jason looks entirely different from Trapper especially if you take in consideration all the different cosmetics he could potentially have, also why do they look similar to you? Because they both have machetes and masks? How many killers to we have that have knives and masks? You said it yourself, Legion and Myers but their powers are entirely different. Who says Jason would have a power even remotely close to Trapper?
Jason is nothing but a buff man with a mask and workerman's clothing, which is what Trapper already has. And you already have Trapper cosmetics that look similar to Jason's, such as H20's mask. Will they look exactly the same? No, and I never said that either. But not distinct enough for me to think Jason is worth adding. I think it's really dubious to say they look nothing alike.
I also have no idea why you lot keep bringing up powers. I never said anything about powers. Why are you guys being heavily dishonest when responding to me and bringing up points I never mentioned? I never commented about what Jason's powers would be. I don't care
You lot are either trolling or being dense on purpose

Hillbilly was literally inspired by Leatherface, same as how Trapper was inspired by Jason, who says they would have the same/similar powers?
And? My initial point was that I don't see the point in having two killers who look similar. I never commented about powers, and even the comparison between Billy and Leatherface's powers is moot; their powers work entirely differently and they only have a chainsaw in common. What's next, Legion and Myers are similar because they use knives?
Leatherface and Billy do not look similar. I never commented on Billy's inspiration.
Why are people trying to respond with irrelevant information?
I will reiterate my point: I think it will be redundant to add Jason considering Trapper already looks like him.

I noticed a lot of killers recently stacking up to 4 anti gen perks (ruin, discordance, pop, corrupt) so I guess they use those to push the gens as fast as possible. If base gens was balanced neither side would bring these tools so often but here we are....
Maybe it's just me but I've never been in a situation where I wished I had a BNP or some other survivor generator perk/item to make generators go faster
As killer I find anti generator perks to be more necessary since no amount of skill can prevent survivors from doing generators super fast, especially on large maps with M1 killers, and even with corrupt. The only killers who can contest this are Nurse and Spirit with good add ons.

How is the Nancy one an improvement? The one DBD modelled is more realistic to what the actual actress looks like. Same with the Steve one.
Also I'm NGL other than the David, Laurie, Tapp, and Quentin one, all of the "better" versions look mediocre in comparison to the original or flat out ugly and unnecessary.

I don't really understand why people act like DBD has never had real competition. They have, but those competitors have failed in some way or another. It's like the people who overlook when communism fails because it's not "true" communism

There is 22 killers, you dont know when you will get Spirit. But use this perfect build. And then you can say "Spirit has counterplay"
Lol
The thing is too, none of those things actually counter Spirit.
Iron Will is countered by Stridor, a very common Spirit perk. Even when not running Stridor, she still hears foot steps. Oh and on top of that, Iron Will does not negate breathing. She can still hear that, with and without Stridor. Equalisers are also a thing for Spirit players as well.
DS literally does not counter her phasing ability. A dumb thing to even suggest
Quick and Quiet does not remove scratch marks and you're going to be heard running anyway after you vault.
Dance With Me does not remove foot steps and visual interaction with things such as grass. Point is, you can still be heard.
And certain add ons make it even worse, such as Father's Glasses.
Suggesting Dance With Me and Quick and Quiet for general builds for a killer you don't know you're going to get is like suggesting to run Calm Spirit every single match as a counter against Doctor. Or Urban Evasion for Hag. Dumb advice on OP's part, particularly for not-so-good perk choices.
Spine Chill helps me get distance against a Spirit sometimes depending on her add ons. But it ends up not mattering anyway because I can't counter a killer who can hit me while invisible and I have no indication where she is but she has multiple ways of knowing where I am.

Every time someone says DBD is toxic and mean it, I just know they never played online games before 2010. lol
This game isn't really toxic, not in a way that you think it is. Its more trash talking then anything else.
"You bad", "You suck at the game", "Could you sweat any harder". People get upset because they don't get their 4k because they tunneled the guy with a flashlight or crouched at a pallet. Or they get upset because they got downed first and kill themselves on hook at 5 gens. So basically the killer wins that round now, because 3 people cant really do 5 gens unless they are just the best of the best and the killer makes 1000 mistakes.
Trash Talk isn't toxic, dying on hook isn't toxic, using DS isn't toxic, tunneling and camping aren't toxic. They are all just unfun but not really toxic. People just see these things as toxic because its against their moral code, not the games.
Please be aware, I do realize there are some people that say some really beyond terrible crap in the game, but that is more so the outlier then the average player. Those people are toxic and bad for the community, but someone calling you basic, or swearing, or just being annoyed because you played in a way that broke their moral code doesn't make them toxic or you toxic. It just a little trash talking to let out the annoyance from a game they felt cheated in.
If people think DBD is so toxic go out to other games like FPS ones where voice chat is pretty much mandatory and you'll be harassed if revealed to be a woman, gay, or some other minority, to the point where it makes you uncomfortable to play.
On DBD you can censor all toxicity by muting chat if you so like. That doesn't mean DBD is beyond reproach but it is to just put things in perspective.

Not at all. My ego, as anyone will tell you, is quite oversized tied to my force of will. I don't even remember your name or this post after I've left it until I get a notification and come back to remind myself. But I do appreciate you proving my point for me. Let me home in on something you said above; you said, "I can't write the code here because I don't have the source code." Exactly. You don't know what you are talking about. While I am an egotistical SOB, even I don't make the assumptions that you do. You simply assume that there are no problems, that to implement the immediate gratification you want is a snap. What wonderfully high opinion you have or yourself and your abilities; are we kindred spirits? The difference between us is that I will take pride in the things I accomplish and know for a fact. I don't assume that I'm smarter than the coders at the DEV. I don't even assume I know more about code than you do (although it is quite possible). What I do know is that there is no way for them to detect what settings people have on their monitors, mice, and keyboards. What I do know is that any attempt to curtail those Killers across all platforms is a very messy can of worms. Are you picking up what I'm putting down?
All you do is demand what you WANT and infer that the DEV are somehow lazy or have ulterior motives for not granting you immediate gratification. Believe it or not, I've been taking it easy on you. I'm trying HARD to be a kinder, more gentle Moundshroud. Until you can come to us with some facts, you are just another nameless, faceless voice quacking on the internet. You are a child throwing a tantrum, mad about some perceived injustice and screaming ME! ME! ME!
There's a lot of irony and hypocrisy in this post
-
Cringehard
I mean dead hard. that perk is the one reason why I don't like playing killer as much as I would want to play
-
I tried running fun builds this MMR since I didn't expect much. Something like enduring/STBFL/BBQ/Brutal. No regression.
Got multiple games back to back of four stacks of meta perk survivors with multiple brand new parts on good and large maps. I could barely get more than 5 hooks in the game before all generators were done in under 6 minutes. My very first game was against all rank 1 survivors who were good, on mother's dwelling, ALL with soul guard/ds/dh/unbreakable.
It's the survivors that made me resort to using tinkerer undying ruin pop freddy with slowdown add ons because they want to play sweaty then I can play sweaty too.
I don't even see the need for bringing perks like that honestly. I played survivor with spine chill resilience sprint burst and windows and did more than fine. There's no need for soul guard/dh/ds/unbreakable but to each his own.

BWAHAHAHA!!!
Every time I see these “Freddy vs Clown” comparisons, it just highlights just how little is understood by players trying to use Clown.
There isn’t a chance in hell that Freddy can end a chase as fast as Clown!
(Former Freddy main here. Since his RELEASE!!!)
I actually agree.
It's not like you need to throw a bottle directly at a survivor to have them hindered. It can cover an area and zone the survivor, as well as using speed bottles to boost yourself
Snares have to be places just right and it also can be a real pain when you have that weird delay where the outline of a snare you want to place doesn't show up. You also can't cancel snare placement either so you're just wasting your time.
Even then, just because a killer may not be as strong as another killer doesn't make them "weak" overall. Deathslinger has a much strong chase than Huntress and subsequently huntress is weaker, as she has more counterplay, but that does not make her a weak killer overall.
Clown is so slept on it hurts. Just because he doesn't zoom across the map like blight or have instadowns like billy doesn't make him the worse killer or near worse killer.

I'm a bit dumbfounded Lampkin Lane was the most played map. I understand it only has one version/map in its Realm, Haddonfield, but I still get so many other maps predominately (MacMillan, Coldwind, Ormond) that I would suspect that at least for me, I'm more likely to get a specific map of any of those three maps more than Lampkin Lane, a map I can go pretty much weeks without seeing once without an offering.

Object of Obsession, particularly in a swf.
General comms already do what OoO does. Comms, as well as OoO, do not help in chase. You can't call out specific coordinates of every killer's move efficiently enough when they are in chase with someone else for it to be efficient, let alone for it to even work. You'll probably just confuse your friend and get them killed faster because they have to think about what they're going to do while listening to you, which the instructions will probably be ######### up anyway.
Object of Obsession only is as bad as people make it out to be when the person, or the SWF, plays stealthy, and in my experience many people don't use OoO this way. Last time I went against OoO was a duo swf. They refused to get near me and I just decided to chase the other two because they wanted to go to places like the school/fun house of Badham.

And that's where you're wrong. Colloquially, we're clearly not talking about the same thing. You're saying by definition, technically everything is a skill, therefore dbd takes skill. In the same vein that counting to ten is a skill therefore counting technically takes skill. Meanwhile, people are saying that in terms of skills, whatever unclear metrics that they're judging, dbd is not skillful.
Your only merit so far is that your right that it is a subjective opinion as to what counts as skill. A 1 year old counting to 10 is skillful to me but a 30 year old isn't but that's based on my own selected criteria. In my eyes, dbd when compared to everything I've played and experienced is not a skillful game. However, saying that your criteria for skillful play is objective is also incorrect. It's not objective either, since you've subjectively chosen your own criteria on what counts as skill.
@ClownIsUnderrated said:
Honestly Dead By Daylight does have some skill to it, but the skill ceiling to the game is very low not gonna lie. There are certain killers who take a lot of skill of learning like Nurse and Blight, but killers such as Trapper or Myers more so require game knowledge. Compare DBD to a fighting game, and obviously fighting games require so much time, effort, and lots of skill put into it if you're gonna be good at all the characters. DBD can only come close to doing that with Nurse, but other than that DBD doesn't possess a high skill ceiling compared to a fighting game.
@Adeloo said:
Tru is right in sense that game knowledge will make you learn the base of the game and help you learn to play it correctly much faster than if you don't have any idea about how things work.
But it's easier for a player that was here for at least 2-3 years because we didn't have that much perks and power to learn and to verse. The game will get harder and harder for new players because there are so many Realms, Killer's powers and perks know, that it will take a long time to be familiar with it. And that's without taking in count the playing knowledge, how does the redlight work, how does vaulting work, etc the base mechanics of the game.
Yes it's a pretty basic game : 1v4, 1 hunt and 4 work together or against each other to escape, which both requires few mouse or keyboard actions. BUT with the amount of informations you have to process in a single game, and the fact that every single game is different, (because killer is never the same, can be played differently by every player, don't bring the same perks or addons etc), the game has a a slow learning curve. That's why it takes hundred of hours to get competent, and that number will never stop growing.
I'm responding to you lot at once since the points are similar to varying degrees. Some parts are more so for others so please keep that in mind
The issue with using subjective criteria is that it's more so based on perception and emotion rather than any sort of analysis. No one here has yet to really explain how DBD is not skillful other than compare it to other games which are also similarly not skillful in the grand scheme of things. Simply saying "this game requires mostly game knowledge and not skill" is not a valid argument and is in fact simply not using the word correctly. Skill comes from making good decisions based on knowledge. By this very logic, chess is not skillful because it relies on game knowledge almost entirely rather than some sort of external "skill" people are ambiguously alluding to that for some reason other games like FPS games and fighting games coincidentally don't seem to have either, but real sports do like physical prowess and etc. And I have a feeling you lot are going to be really scared to publicly go around saying a game like chess is not a skillful game, which strikes me as double standards based on your own personal perception
I never said my criteria is objective, but there is a difference between saying DBD does not require skill versus something along the lines of "compared to other games I've played DBD wasn't hard to me". One is acknowledging that their opinion and experience is subjective, the other is being dogmatic and incorrect and that's what I'm calling folly.
My argument was never to try and superimpose my experience. DBD is not the hardest game I've personally played. But I'm not going to sit here and imply it's piss easy like others have in this thread and others regularly do, particularly when it's evidenced by the amount of time people of particular skill calibres take to get to certain skill tiers. Easy games don't require that much time to get good at in casual play. Yet here you all are taking hundreds of hours to get even competent at the game.
As I've seen in this thread, what people deem as skillful definitely appears to be influenced by social perception and/or just based on their emotions since the logic tends to be simply incorrect and contradictory when applied to other games that they would find "skillful" but actually wouldn't be according to their logic as to why DBD isn't skillful, à la chess.

Not a bannable offence =/= supporting. You keep making false analogies
Stream sniping is virtually impossible to have proof for to even consider having it ban worthy, hence why it's simply excluded.

You do know there is like a 20 second delay right? I’m not gaining any advantage at all by listening in the background. Especially when most of them are saying “thanks stinkyfeet1254 for the sub!” Every two seconds
Yea I'm aware, and that was an irrelevant point as that changes absolutely nothing.
People can do what they want but I personally find it really sweaty if people stream snipe. Like bruv play the game normally you don't need to hear their comms or see what they're doing. Wait until the game is over and watch the VOD if you're curious about what they said about you. That's what I do.
Your intentions of hearing the stream and trying to equalise it to them being on comms is a false equivalence, and that's where I have an issue with what you did.
Devs support comms and people need to stop being thick and acting like it's cheating when the devs have made their stance on it. They literally allow comms in their official discord server that they have the highest role in.
So to give my conclusion to your question: No I don't agree stream sniping is fair. You aren't supposed to hear nor see what the other side is saying while playing. Comms are permitted by devs. Stop equalising the two.
-
No what you did wasn't fair since you intentionally left it up and could hear everything they were saying. Doesn't matter if you couldn't see, you still had access to information you otherwise wouldn't have had because you sniped their stream.
It doesn't even matter if you won either

And that's my point. You can't match unskilled labour and skilled labor together just because they both use the word skill in the same vein you can't say the definition of a skill describes what counts as a skill means that everyone is wrong when they say the game doesn't take skill. You're combining colloquial meaning of skill with a dictionary version just describing what is a skill. If all you're going to say is that anything counts as a skill by definition, therefore dbd takes skill than we've hit an impasse. Walking counts as a skill. Therefore, going down the street takes skill. Excellent.
Except it is objectively wrong when someone says DBD requires no skill in both technicality and colloquially, and subsequently it's superimposing their subjective perception of the game which is not an objective truth.
It's not like a real sport that requires actual physical robustness as well as game knowledge and subsequently skill, which is actually showcasing difficulty to obtain proficiency in at a top level and to keep performing so.
At the end of the day, no game is too hard. It's simply button mashing and it's a bunch of nerds arguing whose button mashing is the hardest which is really laughable
-
The amount of mental gymnastics you went through to try and justify your weird anger towards this game is concerning.
You want to seek the devs' attention about your complaints but yet just came here to seek attention for a review you never published here, as if they'll take time out of their day to go search up a review of a hostile troglodyte who's mad at a game and subsequently its players for calling out an attention-seeking twit for having unnecessary anger issues over a game and its players.
Don't know if it's just me but the one time I was so displeased enough to write a negative review about something, I wrote it and left. Never watched it again, never went on the website of the franchise to complain about it. Never tried to argue about how bad it was to its fans because even though I didn't like it, I didn't care enough about it to try and convert other people. Sounds like you have more deep-seated issues than this game.
For someone who tried--and failed--to be a smart ass, you aren't making much sense here. As I said you appeared dumb enough to come around a second time and I know you will again. Keep this game rent free in your head, it only helps the game more than you think your irrelevant review ever will.

He has a great anti loop tool until you get to a pallet and drop it lol
You can just spam bottles until you get them, or spam bottles around many pallets if said pallet creates a loop to catch survivors

OK but you can't seriously be suggesting that we just have to learn to play the trickster right and suddenly hes going to be viable
I literally said nothing about trickster

Imagine being worse then clown lol
People grossly underrate Clown. He has great 1v1 but not 1v4, which many killers have one or either and only a extreme minority have both.
He shuts down looping and your only chance to survive him is to pre drop pallets. I don't see how that's bad at all. Also the fact that he has built-in haste now makes him even more lethal
Clown is at least B tier imo, of course in the right hands.
-
Can you not look up the content of the tweets to find out who this content creator is?
Don't feed this clown more attention than he already is trying to seek. He's pathetic enough to try and be a mean girl on a video game.
A bonafide loser if you ask me.
-
I really don't see why nor how you thought posting your announcement that you wrote an irrelevant view with no meaningful impact on the game's popularity is meant to make anyone care
The game and its developers are so bad that you still are thinking about the game after your review, went to seek attention for it on forums, and will stay for a few days to try and get some more attention off of it by looking at the replies here.
Seems like the game lives rent free in your head, and they're probably still making money off of you just being on this website
-
Isn't this due to latency?
From my understanding, what you see on your screen isn't always what the server sees, let alone what the killer sees.

Funny how DBD, a “party game”, can inflict this much of stress to a state of affecting mental health...
Good luck to you. Hope you can recover from it soon.
People really have poor exposure to other games if they think DBD is the most toxic, let alone amongst the most toxic communities.
This game has no built in voice chat, and be played to pretty much its full extent (especially killer) without needing voice chat in any capacity. On top of that you can disable end game chat to block out any sort of potential toxicity you would get.
Try going to a game like Rainbow Six, or really any other like Valorant where it is detrimental to play pub games without voice chat, and even if you choose not to speak even more detrimental if you choose to mute everyone. The toxicity is like DBD amplified by ten, on top of more prominent sexism and other isms, and is rather unavoidable. I pity women who play FPS games since they are harassed incessantly, and people in general who play FPS games regularly.
DBD has its problems and should be called out accordingly regardless of what other games are like but people really romanticise the communities of other games when in fact many others are worse.

You're using the definition incorrectly. That's a definition of a skill, not whether or not something requires skill. It would be like arguing unskilled labour and skilled labor are the same thing because technically everything is a skill so there's no such thing as unskilled labour. Conflating the two means we're talking about 2 separate things.
I'm not using it incorrectly. Saying a type of labour is unskilled is simply a way of referring to it having a lack of specialised skill, particularly in an area of work, not having no skill in general. If the game didn't require a considerable amount of skill then there wouldn't be such blatant tiers of skill in this game, and there would be no issues with rainbow matchmaking let alone the need for MMR if the game was so easy, and subsequently would mean that the disparity between someone who is relatively inexperienced game time wise compared to someone who is heavily experienced in that same regard would be almost identical in terms of performance. The reality is that they are not.
What you subjectively deem as being good enough to be labelled as skill is besides the point. It is actually skill at the end of the day and there's no arguing that. If you want to infantalise and boil it down, the talent required in video games amounts to pure button mashing and mouse moving. You have children who aren't even old enough to graduate primary school who are very proficient at FPS games and fighting games and who are able to pick up these skills by playing casually, and that alone showcases how simple it is to get "skilled" at any video game, and how people only subjectively hype up and demean games according to their own bias. This applies to the games that people often want to say requires skill such as Valorant/Tekken/Street Fighter/Overwatch etc.
What determines skill in this game isn't whether or not you 4k or even escape, and that's in the game mechanics itself. You can get a 4k and still lose a pip depending on how you play. You can escape a game and lose a pip depending on how you play.
The end point is, if this game was so easy, why is it taking you all so long to get good at it? Not everyone is a competitive player but if the game was this easy then it should be accessible to be good for all casual players, but yet most people aren't good. So what gives?
@steezo_de said:
This is simple. This game does take skill, but the bar to be good is very low compared to other games that take more to master- like Quake, Starcraft, or Street Fighter. It's not even close.
I know people like to talk about game sense, awareness, prediction.. all the stuff that you need in other competitive games, but there's so many visual and audio cues, and random variables, that it takes away from the difficulty of the game. If you want to talk about balance, that's something else, but this game is easy to learn. May take some people time to be real good at it, but that's not hard to do either.
Now there is something to be said about just bad gamers in general. This game attracts a LOT of casual types and some of those don't want to or CAN'T get better, so take that for what it's worth.
And---I know Tru3 is a competitive gamer at heart and I'm sure when he says what he does, it's coming from that viewpoint (and again, balance issues aside).
It really is funny how much nerds want to fight about whose button mashing is the hardest to do lol

"I think you misunderstanding my intention of this interaction. I don't care to convince you, especially considering the previous contents of your posts in this thread. You showcased several misconceptions and some flat out lies trying to talk about how the game is like this and that and it turns out to be dubious assumptions or simply not true to fit your own confirmation bias. I'm merely illustrating your train of thought for saying the game doesn't require skill isn't really as sound as you want to market it to be."
"Your claim that you're on par with streamers with over 4000 hours is still yet to be verified and at this point doubtful considering the other claims you've made about the game that turned out to not actually be true."
"4king and escaping in this game isn't reflective of one's skill. Veterans will tell you that. Everyone else in this community will tell you that."
So would you care to explain to me how my argument is founded on less stable ground than yours or are you just going to hurl insults at me? Where are your hard facts and statistics? Are we not both just presenting our opinions here?
"Hours are not the end all be all of defining skill, but it's a general correlation, much as is rank. People often say rank means nothing, but yet complain about mismatched matchmaking. You can't have it both ways. Hopefully MMR fixes that, but the mixmatched match making doesn't negate anything about how it takes skill to play this game, and the general pattern that it takes people hundreds of hours to even begin being competent."
"But I will repeat myself again: winning isn't the definition of skill in this game. There are tonnes of games out there where skill isn't defined by winning or completing the game and DBD is one of them"
I'd prefer if you kept the discussion civil but it seems as though all you want to do now is patronize me. Do you, by any chance have proof that hours and rank are "general correlations" to skill? If anything I'm the only one to have any sort of evidence with those screenshots but sure, call my claims "dubious" and say I'm lying without anything to back those claims up.
No one insulted you, I just questioned the authenticity of what you said considering you posted some blatantly incorrect statements. Such as probably not even 0.5% of the playerbase or whatever having more than 50 hours even though this is blatantly not true and just your own superimposition of your thoughts onto the game and trying to pass it off as fact, which I directed you not telling the truth about that by sourcing steam statistics showing a plethora of achievements which cannot be achieved in the time span you listed, as well as by a much larger playerbase than what you listed.
I think the discussion has been going fine. You made outlandish claims and you got corrected on it, so yes I'm going to treat what you say with some suspicion.
You're kind of grasping for straws here. First of all, general correlation =/= absolute correlation. Secondly, if you want a source for some common sense knowledge then you will have to refer to Google for that one, I'm not spoon feeding you. It's not hard to understand that generally more time spent into practising something renders an outcome of becoming prone to being better at it over time, as opposed to not doing it at all or virtually not doing it at all. Play time in this game translates to practice. And I made sure to say generally because this isn't always the case that someone becomes good in general regardless of their playtime, but particularly in accordance to their hours.
Also, I didn't see your "proof" in your pictures before of you going against streamers--you edited it after I read it. You made this weird goalpost that you're for some reason pretending that I said and I never did. I've said multiple times thus far 4king/escaping =/= inherently having skill. I never made the statement people of that calibre can never lose a game. Specifically Tofu (don't know who the other guy is) who doesn't even play seriously on stream in the first place and generally is just looking at chat, ######### with a flashlight (which shocker he had one), and/or using Head On. Kind of weird, and to many extents desperate-looking, how you took at best a few games of people ######### around on stream and thought your skill was basically equivalent to them. Big yikes
So on top of the lying, there's dishonest paraphrasing of what I said, on top of simply putting words in my mouth. What a trainwreck of an argument holy scheisse

You're mixing up skill in terms of mechanics and game knowledge. DBD doesn't take much skill in terms of mechanics. You don't need much precision movements, fast reflexes or complex controls for DBD. Even nurse isn't too difficult when you think about it. The worst part is that her difficulty is inflated by poor controls, feed back and bugs.
Refer to the above. People keep saying it's wrong but that's not what the dictionary says
Do you lot have any sources to back up your definition of skill? I'm truly curious if it's anything but a personal interpretation of what you want skill to be qualified as. I have no problem being corrected.

The game isnt hard and doesnt take skill, true is right. Its all about game knowledge and id say common sense and some iq helps too.
It doesnt require any great skill or training to hold a button at a gen and have the reflexes of an infant to hit skill checks, doesnt take skill to drop a pallet, hit a survivor or unhook.
The main separation is knowledge of loops, how to combine windows and pallets to extend a loop, and be efficiant on gens (gens efficiency being HUGE). Ive seen teams that couldnt chase longer then 40 seconds but they could bang out gens.
Nothing about this game is hard or takes skill
Making better decisions from advanced knowledge is literally the definition of skill as per the dictionary:
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/skill
the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance; dexterity or coordination especially in the execution of learned physical tasks; a learned power of doing something competently : a developed aptitude or ability… See the full definitionthe ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance
the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well:
So you just admitted this game requires skill, and also admitted you're using the word wrong.
@just_teme said:
Their point most likely is that this game has very very few mechanically difficult things to do which makes getting good accessible to wider range of people. Memorizing every single tile and how to play them against and as every killer against varying difficulty of players while taking in consideration 140 perks takes tons of time. This game is over 90% game knowledge that doesent make it a game that requires no skill but a game that requires diffrent kind of skill from many other games especially shooters.
That is fair, but different type of skill should not be equated to no skill. Learning how to aim in an FPS game isn't particularly the hardest thing to do either, let alone requiring much thought.
People really romanticise skills in other games when video game skill boils down to a bunch of non sense almost all the time. People need to stop acting like other video games are equivalent to real life sports that require serious effort and talent to do: being physically fit, training extremely hard to be good at it, etc.
Video game skill, including for FPS games that people for some reason take too seriously for some odd reason, result in knowing when to press a button on your mouse or certain buttons on your keyboard. Really not grandiose in the scheme of things.

Yeah, that's exactly my point. How do you know how much the potato salads Otzdarva plays against have played? How do you know whether they're playing consistently or have taken large breaks? How do you know if they're just grinding for BP or genuinely trying to improve?
That's why I brought up diamond rank in other games. In Rainbow Six when you go up against a diamond 5-stack you know they are good, you know they are actively playing, and you know they want to win. When you go up against a red-rank survivor they could have played literally one match per month to stay there and you wouldn't know the difference.
TLDR: The hours are not an apt comparison for skill in DbD. When we get a copper through masters ranking system and only the best of the best streamers are up there at the top, then you can tell me this game is difficult to learn.
Matchmaking isn't the best in this game, sure. But I will repeat myself again: winning isn't the definition of skill in this game. There are tonnes of games out there where skill isn't defined by winning or completing the game and DBD is one of them

True is right, to be "good" at this game is mostly about game knowledge which translates to memorization of tiles, perks, and killers.
There is a bit of skill involved though which manifests as predicting what your opponent is going to do, but even most of this is based off of memorizing the items above.
That literally doesn't fit the definition of skill. You cannot have skill without more advanced knowledge and the decisions you make based off of said knowledge translates to skill. Saying the game requires knowledge but little skill is dumb and makes zero sense. Little skill translates to performing badly. This also applies for every single game. Knowledge enables you to make better decisions which becomes skill.

Well yeah cause most people think of this game as Mario Party.
The amount of players who spend more than 50 hours on this game is probably like 0.1% of everyone who buys it.
Nobody is practicing DbD day-in day-out so they can participate in the Uber Super Champion's League World Tournament. The average player is just not very invested. There's no grinding for Diamond in DbD.
Comparatively to most of the playerbase I'm pretty confident you or I or anyone else on this forum with more than 500 hours would look like a god.
And I also think you're way overselling the skill of streamers. How often do you see Otzdarva or OhTofu or whoever get into a private game with the best of the best survivors? Almost never? They mostly play in pubs with completely uncoordinated randoms.
Never seen the Mario Party comparison until today, so I don't quite buy "most people" think of this game compared to Mario Kart. It seems like it's just you.
Where's your source that said percentage correlates with those amount of hours? It seems like you're just talking out of your ass. It seems like you're superimposing your own pejorative thoughts onto the game and then claiming it as fact. You can literally check steam achievement statistics for DBD and it proves you wrong. And that's only for PC players, the minority platform of this game. It would be even amplified more on console.
DBD's grind technically is for the BP, which you subsequently get by playing a lot, which by playing a lot you're prone to get better. Grind for rank or not, DBD has grind that people buy into nonetheless. Doesn't really matter if DBD has diamond rank or not.
When you said streamers, my thoughts were of the veteran streamers such as Otz/Tofu/Tru3/basically 4000 hour+ streamers. Some of them also play in tournaments. But my point is getting a 4k isn't the end all be all of skill. I'll repeat what I said:
You don't need to be very good at the game to pretty much 4k all the time with undying/ruin/tinkerer/pop freddy or spirit for example. Being good at the game also goes beyond constantly getting 4ks or getting out of a match, which isn't hard to do when perks can carry you so heavily.
Also, the lack of coordination of survivors often is just due to the pitfalls of solo queue. It's a team role but you're not given the tools to act as a proper team. Instead of 1v4 it turns out to be 1v1v1v1v1. Not truly an issue of skill in that department.
