That is a false equivalence. Saying they are exactly the same is misleading and outright false. Cryptocurrencies are just that, a currency. NFTs are images or gifs that have a receipt saved into a server that uses up more energy that it is currently worth. For instance, say one buys an NFT for $250. The server used to keep your receipt valid costs over $2000 a month to run. Of course all of these numbers are made up, but my point is clear that NFTs waste way more money and energy than they need in order to stay active.
Sorry, but your whole understanding is wrong...
The whole "environmental damage" of NFTs comes from the fact that they are stored in a cryptocurrency database and building this cryptocurrency database (blockchain) needs a lot of computing power, i.e. electricity, i.e. cheap electricity, which is made using fossil fuels.

That's the element that's getting the most attention. The other element is that they're pretty much a scam and BHVR is now actively advertising for a fairly shady company (so much so that people were convinced this whole thing was a prank before it got the official announcement) that is making them. In a vacuum, this is not ok, and the whole Lawyer speak about trying to calm the community about this NFT situation while not explicitly denying that they were doing them is kinda disrespectful to the consumer. They were hoping people weren't reading between the lines, and many clearly didn't. Regardless, there was an element of deception in that the clear purpose of their statements was to convince us that this was just the license holders doing their own thing. It isn't apparently.
NFTs are not scam, but many try to do scams using NFTs. If someone doesn't understand NFTs or they are not interested in an NFT which says that "you own pinhead according to bossprotocol" (or something similar) then they simply just shouldn't buy it.

of course we inherently don't know what it means. however, given what we do know. that BHVR intended the assets to be used for NFTs, I will assume that, adapted means the assets were created with the ultimate intention of being used for an NFT. I think that's a safe assumption, would you agree?
My guess is that DBD created the models for the game. The license owners could have just hired some 3d artist to create the pinhead models, but since the models were already done for DBD, they just reused those.

That's a bit of a red herring there bud. We aren't talking about Elon, his Musks, or his Cryptocurrencies. We're talking about Dead by Daylight's want to have their cake and eat it too. Not only that, but cars are also VERY different from video games.
The outrage is about NFTs are bad because they harm environment. Well cryptocurrencies are exactly the same...

The problem on that end though is that these NFTs are going for $250 a pop. Even if one person purchases one, that's half a game console. All it takes is a small classroom's worth of people to make the investment into NFTs worth it.
And what's the problem with that? If someone for some strange reason wants to buy it, let them buy it. Is it your money? Why do you want to tell someone else how to spend their money?
-
I am just wondering why I didn't see such an outrage when the boss of a certain electric car company was promoting cryptocurrencies. Maybe I just didn't read the correct forums. Anyway... the car sales didn't drop.

Okay, here's what would make people happy:
"Due to community response and further research, we have decided to disband from associating with BPs NFTs permanently. [enter reasons why nfts are bad]. Due to this decision, [enter a drawback to removing association, such as pinhead being removed]. We hope you understand why we made this decision in the first place, and we are deeply sorry for what we associated our business with"
And of course, disbanding with BP is the best outcome.
Screw NFTs.
I would not be happy if they would remove Pinhead from the game. Also you expect them to throw out several months of work? Don't be ridiculous.

that would be ok, however that goes under the implication BHVR didn't make models specifically for use as NFTs. Which isn't the reality of the situation. As they stated they adapted the models for use as NFTs.
That was miscommunication. And even if not, nobody really needs to know what it even means they adapted it. (E.g. Exported it JPEG?)

how about something along the lines of
"we see and understand your concerns with our involvement with NFTs. We apologise for any miscommunication, and our omission of information regarding the subject. We at BHVR do not support NFTs, nor do we condone any actions involving them on part of our partners at PAE and BossProtocol. Any content related to NFTs is exclusively to do with our partners and we have no direct involvement with them. They are free to use the assets we created for DBD as they see fit as the rightful copyright owners."
not that statements we got where the promote and endores the NFTs, along with saying they worked to adapt assets from DBD specifically for NFTs.
What would be your reaction to this:
"Sorry for the miscommunication. We worked together with the license owners to create Pinhead models and now they started to sell NFTs of these models. Check it out if you are into NFTs, here is the link to their site."
-
Well... Read it again...
Like many people you don't understand correctly what they wrote...

@Beaburd said:
I like this public statement from them, indirect apology accepted from me.
I might be seen as flippant, but it's not in anyone's good interest for them to belittle their partners or outright revoke their actions. Could you imagine how much harder it would make license agreements for them in the future? Not to mention other complications.
Whether they knew about the NFTs and were testing the water known as their ethical limits, or they supported it in ignorance and had no idea what their assets would be used for, the damage is done. This post is showing they have no interest in NFTs either way, likely in part from the backlash.
For me, complaining about things like NFTs and killer balance is to evoke a change instead of causing a riot.
If Behaviour will not pursue NFT activities in the future, nor support it further, I can't help but feel like they've learned a lesson and the complaints have done their job. But hey, if they ever do it again, I would consider it a breach of trust at that point and then be a bit more offended and distrustful.
Don't see too much into this tweet. It is not an apology, just facts.
(I just want to save you from disappointment.)

That was not the main concern though. What people are truly mad about is the fact they accepted the NFTs terms PAE set to have pinhead in the game. The better choice for them would have been saying no, seeing that it now kills whatever rep they had left. It's true that they are not selling NFTs, however, they had a hand in making them. Pinhead isn't worth seeing this game possibly die out.
I don't even try to ask how do you know it was not a main concern.
What I am curious on the other hand is what would you like to hear from BHVR. Could you write an example tweet?

Many were concerned that Steam will delete the game. It addresses that concern.

That is not the twitter post they are referring to. There was one last week in which they implied the NFT was created outside of their control, and then the one yesterday that stated that they worked close with the group for months.
In between these tweets, BHVR mods removed any threads suggesting BHVR worked close with the group for months, and banned people. Then they later said it was true.
Please send me a link to it then

######### did I just read. Now your just playing dumb. Also, I like how you didn't respond to my 1st and 3rd point, because you don't have an excuse for those.
if you actually try to say "the NFT custom skin for a $200 loot box isn't a skin in DBD, its just a PNG picture !!!1!11!1!", I will make a 10 minute YouTube video in which I explain the English language and grammar to you.
I did not reply to the other two, because my reply to 2) was the easiest to understand... and even that you don't want to understand.
Let me try a different way:
BHVR has a merch store where they sell medkits. Imagine they would write this: "1% of the orders will receive a special golden edition medkit and also access to the newest DBD chapter." So based on your reasoning you would conclude that this lucky 1% will get an exclusive golden medkit skin in the game. Which is obviously incorrect... the merch medkit you ordered will be the golden, not some in-game skin.
I hope now you see that you misunderstood their post. The post says that the NFT will be referring to some special costume 3d model, but it has nothing to do with getting some exclusive skin you could use in the game.

1) Steam can change its user agreement in a second. Them banning NFTs recently shows that. It's their platform, and they can do whatever they want with it. Multiple court cases have shown this, including when the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission sued Valve Software for not allowing refunds, and then Valve just changed the user agreement the next week to saying "We can deny any refunds at all times." Steam is also know for breaking its own rules, especially with the drama a couple years ago when Valve employees began jumping into VAC banned CSGO account and just deleted hundreds of thousands worth of skins. Do you have BHVR's steam contract? No, you don't, so you have no idea what can or cannot get them banned. Stop pretending like you know what their contract is.
2)

https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/STD8G4XLTY85/dbd-2.png
So dead by daylight made a custom Legendary skin for the NFT website and locked it behind a $200 loot box with a 0.1% drop rate. Many people suspect that skin to be Chatterer, but the answer is, we have no idea. BHVR already lied to us, and they are 100% willing to lie again.
3) Nobody forced you to buy anything, that's a strawman argument that you made up. My point was, ADDING A $200 LOOT BOX WITH A 0.1% DROP RATE IS SUCH A DISGUSTING BUSINESS PRACTICE. If that doesn't make you angry, then you probably are just willing to take any bullshit in your life and never fight against anything. What a miserable life.
Replying to 2:
The thing you marked says that some NFTs will be a special variant having an alternate costume and also these NFTs also give you access to Hellraiser DBD chapter.
It says nowhere that it would give you an exclusive skin in DBD.
Read it again carefully...
So these two posts you showed me don't contradict each other.

that's the issue with NFTs, they are so expensive and wasteful, however anybody is free to download the image as they please. I can save that image to my device right now and it wont cost me a dime. But it's mine now, I have it. I can do whatever I like with it, and the NFT holder can't do anything about it. He has no authority over what I do with "his image"
Also, downloading a file, doesn't support NFTs either, to think so is a little nieve on how they work.
It is not the purpose of NFTs to prevent others from downloading some pictures.

you didnt buy an NFT, but you bought a product which will go to supporting a company that deals in NFTs. Had anybody known this prior, I guarantee almost nobody would have bought him. Because nobody wants to help a company that deals with NFTs. If other companies have done so, they've done so discretely, so of course people would buy their products when we dont know they deal in NFTs. There's a difference between supporting something willingly and unwillingly. Had I know my money would go to supporting them, I would never have Pinhead. And sure "it doesn't matter in game" that doesnt make it morally right.
Well then I hope you don't buy anything from BHVR anymore. And you should uninstall DBD, because playing it also supports BHVR.
Also don't us this meme:
Because that has also some NFT.
Better don't create any memes and don't even ever watch any meme.

I remember when I was one of the people who said this whole thing sounded like a scam and telling people to stop panicking, yet here we are. 🤷♂️ I for one would have never bought pinhead’s dlc had I known that this is what was going on behind the scenes.

So...
In a pyramid scheme, the value of your investment is based on how many other people buy into the same scam.
And for NFTs, the value of your NFT is dependent on other people buying into the same scam.
I think that's the same issue.
What you say is incorrect...
The value of your NFT is based on demand just like most things in the world. If nobody wants to buy your NFT it is worth 0. With your reasoning e.g. buildings, land, gold, paintings, oil is all a pyramid scheme.

They made the deals and have setup contracts with Nft options.
You buy it = You support it.
Thats why people are upset. Because they are involved into a situation they were not aware of.
I didn't buy any NFT. Just because I have Pinhead DLC, I don't support NFTs based on Pinhead.
With your reasoning I think you would be surprised how many NFT's you "supported" or will in the future.

How are NFTs not a pyramid scheme?
Here:
A pyramid scheme is a business model that recruits members via a promise of payments or services for enrolling others into the scheme, rather than supplying investments or sale of products. As recruiting multiplies, recruiting becomes quickly impossible, and most members are unable to profit; as such, pyramid schemes are unsustainable and often illegal.A non-fungible token (NFT) is a unique and non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a digital ledger (blockchain).[1] NFTs can be used to represent easily-reproducible items such as photos, videos, audio, and other types of digital files as unique items (analogous to a certificate of authenticity), and use blockchain technology to establish a verified and public proof of ownership. -

Because most people think that language was meant to lead us to believe that this was happening and they did not agree with it. They were being forced into it by the parent company or that the parent company was using BHVR's assets for a purpose they did not support.
However, as it turns out, most DEVS at the company didn't know about this. This was planned and hidden on purpose and the tweet was purposefully misleading people to try to save face.
Now, there isn't really any point. The game's over and it's pretty clear that nobody likes BHVR right now.

I don't know much about why people buy NFT's, and you cannot state that "steam wont ban dbd herp derp", steam can essentially ban whoever the ######### they want, and steam is know for spending millions of dollars on lawsuits for petty reasons, so I have no doubt that they won't hesitate to nuke DBD from the launcher if they want to make an example out of them.
Not to mention that BHVR just lied to everyone's faces when by saying they weren't going to be associated with NFT's not even 1 week ago, and then tried to secretly slide in this little "announcement" right before one of the best gameplay patches of all time. That was no accident.
Your also forgetting that they heavily implied that Pinhead is going to get custom skins that you can only get from 200+ dollar lootboxes from a 3rd party website? What the ######### is up with that?!
If you aren't pissed of about this situation then I doubt you believe in anything at all, especially consumer protections, because this decision could ONLY be made by a greedy, giant corporation that BHVR has become over the last 5 years.
It was pure luck that DBD got as popular as it is now, maybe the game will have to die for them to realize that. If VHS hits their gameplay out of the park, then BHVR is going to be in some hot water.
So please tell me:
1. Why do you think Steam can ban whoever they want? There are contracts controlling this. You think a sentence in contract says: we can ban you whenever we want to?
2. Where did BHVR say they have nothing to do with NFTs?
3. Pinhead skins for 200+? And who is forcing us to buy it?
-
@unluckycombo said:
Some people are taking the tweets as BHVR endorsing NFTs (Which, we don't know whether they really do or not, but my guess currently is that it's another part of their liscensing agreement per what they had release about it in another tweet), and even though BHVR isn't based on NFT/Crypto and doesn't push it down your throat, we don't know if crypto being somewhat supported like this from BHVR is going to get the game banned from Steam.
Plus, there's the entire thing of if it does get banned, while I don't think we'll lose our progress or anything, it doesn't look good to move your game to another platform over a ban like that. That's why people are concerned.
What you described here is the whole panic. Being scared, coming up with irrational fears, all this based on half facts.
