I do this all the time. Not to derank. I just tend to take breaks from the game. I actually just came back from a long break. I was back to rank 20. It took me a couple of games to get back in the groove. But after that it was probably unfair for me to be there.

Which is precisely why I'm surprised that a new matchmaking system built around skill wasn't introduced years ago. There are so many false ranks out there that a makes this game incredibly imbalanced.

  • Ranks would matter more than they do if it weren't for the monthly resets. You could stop playing the game for a few months and be reset back to level 20. It's why you'll see level 17 killers with maxed out teachables.

So yeah ranks do matter, but they're not accurate.

oh absolutely. i was a bit rusty for sure when i came back but theres certain skills and strategies that dont leave you in this game. a rank 20 could be someone brand new or someone like me who has a level 50 pig using all tier 3 perks and purple add ons. i really hope the new system actually works decently. i always felt looking at rank and character level would work better.

Yeah I've only been playing this game for a few months, but it used to catch me off guard when I would see level 17 Killers with maxed out perks from other killers. I used to scratch my head thinking how is such a thing possible? Now I know! LOL

yeah its really bizarre. i didn't play this game for a few months and i was taken all the way back to rank 20, and while in rank 20-16 it was fine. but after that i started getting greens and purples and a couple red ranks.

Which goes to show that ranks mean nothing in this game. I know the ranks reset every month, but if you don't play for awhile then you get reset all the way back to level 20 despite the fact that you are not a level 20 killer/survivor.

Personally I'm glad that they're implementing a matchmaking system that looks into skills. Sadly this is something that should have happened years ago.

For me matchmaking works fine when i am in yellow rank.

The hell rank when matchmaking starts to be bad is around rank 11 or 10 for me.

In these ranks i start to get at least 2 red ranks in every match.

Yeah that's what I'm experiencing right now.

    IMG_20200607_210602~2.jpg

  • It's certainly hard to say but I imagine that a system that tracks skills would be keeping track of just how active/successful you are in a match. For example as a survivor it may look to see how effective you are in chases, how many skill checks you fail, etc. As a killer it may look to see how, again, effective you are in chases, how many attempts it takes you to hit an opponent, etc.

  • Unfortunately ranks mean nothing with the current matchmaking system in place. I'm a level 7 survivor that constantly get matched against level 15 to 17 killers. On the flip side as a level 13 killer I get matched against red and purple survivors. The new matchmaking system is supposed to look into skills instead of numbers and it's supposed to be coming this month so hopefully we'll see a dramatic improvement.

  • Honestly I played some Leatherface yesterday and didn't really notice anything different. Leatherface has always had a lot more control over where he goes with his chainsaw than the hillbilly, but if there's one thing Leatherface doesn't need is a nerf. If anything the guy needs buffs.

  • Yeah they say cross-play is definitely happening but cross progression is only being looked at right now. The developers admit that cross progression is a highly requested feature so I'm sure it will be coming at some point.

  • Yeah watch Otz as he gives some great Trapper tips since Trapper is his main killer. That being said, matchmaking is completely screwed up right now. All day yesterday I kept getting matched up with purple and red rank survivors despite being a level 13 killer. I was getting matched with people far more experienced than me which should never happen in a PvP game.

I didn't just say "git gud". I fully explained why - and my reasoning is very widely known.

But okay - ignore that part, and keep blaming matchmaking for your losses.

"There is an element of git gud here" - You literally said that it's easy to level up as a survivor and because of that ranks mean nothing, hence there being an element of "git gud".

But don't you think that maybe, just maybe, it's possible that the matchmaking system is a little messed up and that I'm being matched with people far more experienced than me? Are you suggesting that there isn't anything wrong with matchmaking and that I and many others are just imagining it?

  • @Frankie said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1335585#Comment_1335585

As I said, given how easy ranking up as a survivor is (and it is painfully easy - so easy in fact that you have to try not to pip as survivor), blaming ranks for your loss doesn't actually mean anything. There is an element of git gud here given how little rank means as a survivor. Someone with the skill of a traditional rank 20 can easily get to rank 1.

"git gud" Got to love those comments.

  • This was my match as of 10 minutes ago. I'm done playing killer until the new matchmaking system is released. This is utter ridiculous.

    IMG_20200607_210602~2.jpg

  • The uneven matchmaking is enough to put anyone off, but the amount of grinding is certainly making me weary. I'm a new player and I've been playing this game for a few months now, but for new players like myself that are jumping into a four-year-old game, it's kind of a bummer that we don't have a leg up when it comes to accruing bloodpoints to unlock more perks. I only have a few hours a day to play this game and I would love nothing more than to have more perks unlocked from more killers and survivors, but I know that's never going to happen as I just don't have the time that's necessary to get everything that I want.

What's really sad though is that this is easily rectified if bhvr would just incorporate more experience boosts or blood hunts more often. But I'm certainly eager to see what the new matchmaking system brings, because right now the uneven matchmaking and the massive grind is ensuring that I won't be playing much longer.

  • For starters, killers should always have the advantage in this game. I'm not saying it should be a walk in the park, but there's a reason why survivors should fear the killer. Unfortunately due to the hot mess that is the matchmaking system right now, it's entirely possible for new players to be matched against experienced players. It's all too common to see a level 15 killer be matched against purple and red rank survivors. And when you have a new killer going up against survivors that know the ins-and-outs of every map, and that know how to loop and juke well, it makes this game far from being killer sided.

*Note* I do agree with others though that I believe your issue is tied into server pings more so than really killers.

  • I have to agree with others in that I would wait until the new matchmaking system is released this month. Right now the ranking system is a hot mess. For example I'm a rank 7 survivor yet I constantly get matched against level 15 killers. On the flip side I'm a level 13 killer that constantly gets matched against purple and red rank survivors. Because of this it's more nerve-wracking to play killer than it is survivor which is just sad.

  • Bots were incorporated into the mobile game so it's certainly plausible that bots could one day be incorporated into the main game, but if it were to happen it would probably DBD's swan song. If the servers were ever to shut down I could see bots being a way to ensure that this game lives on for those that have invested so much time and money into it. However I do agree that there needs to be a way to test out killers before purchasing them. Nothing worse than shelling out $8 for a killer only to realize their play style isn't any fun(for you).

  • I'm on PS4 as well and I can pretty much agree with what others are saying about matchmaking. I'm a rank 7 survivor that constantly gets matched against level 15-17 killers. And as a level 13 killer I'm constantly going up against red and purple ranked survivors. It's all rather dumb, and if this new matchmaking system doesn't fix things then I don't see dead by daylight having much more longevity.

  • @ruro said:

I imagine that the player pool to choose from is bigger at weekends. So you would expect a more balanced matchmaking.

I was getting so quick into game this morning, and the games were going so bad because of the unbalanced skills I stop playing.... I wanted to grind a bit and after a few games It wasn't worth it...

At week day nights (when I'm home) playing as survivor, I'm 90% of the time matched with red ranks survivors vs purple and green rank killers. When I'm playing killer (I'm lv 10 killer), I always play vs red rank survivors. I get so stressed and the fun goes down the drain. The matches are pure bullying and suffering xDDD.

Let's see how it goes tonight =)

Your experience mirrors mine almost to a T. The fact that playing as a literal killing machine is more stressful than playing as someone who has no weapons and no way to fight back, is the most asinine thing about dead by daylight. As a killer I would get matched against red rank survivors, but as a survivor I would get matched against a level 15 killer and other red rank survivors. It's absurd.

Possibly they had spine chill? Also if you pop up as soon a survivor starts a gen they may assume surveillance and use that to bait you for the rest of the game. I’ve done this agajnst surveillance and discordance before and almost every time my assumption was right

Yeah I think they would have had spine chill as well. Spine chill is a very effective perk as it even works on stealth characters should they be looking in your direction.

  • Last night I was playing with a friend and we were getting matched with survivors and killers that were pretty much on our same level which blew our minds! 😄 Hopefully it's a sign of things to come! But matchmaking is still an issue though. I know we're all tired of it, but here's a screenshot from the streamer Ohmwrecker's latest match that he uploaded today. Keep in mind this is not a test build server they're playing on. The fact that a ranked 10 killer went up against all red ranks was ridiculous.

*Note* One survivor died because of noed, and another one just gave up when hooked so this killer wasn't as good as you might think they are.

Man, same. I've been playing long enough to have half the killer teachables and I am right there with you. This game is punishing on people who aren't the best at it.

What's sad is that the killer should always have the advantage. I'm not saying it should be a walk in the park, but if you have a good swf team, then they can make a killer regret ever hitting accept at the lobby screen! As cool as it is to be able to use different perks from different killers, a killer's own individual set of perks should be enough to see them through, but it's not. And with a matchmaking system in place that ensures that you'll be competing against red ranks, can make for a very lousy experience.

It would be nice if there were just a monthly 1.5x or 2x Blood Hunt weekend. It would give everyone something to look forward to with regularity, outside of normal patch cycles and big holiday events.

Considering the sheer amount of grinding that exists within this game after four years, I thought blood hunt weekends would have been more common. It's a shame that never happened.

  • @RizeAki said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/158591/wglf-or-bbq-chili

Killer will always get more bloodpoints and bbq tends to be easier to stack if not dealing with bad matchmaking

I was afraid you would say that.😄

  • The doctor is a good killer, but the downside imo is that the perks that benefit him the most come from other killers. Plus his shock therapy requires proper timing which wouldn't be bad if you could power it up and hold on to it, but since you can't it can be hard to interrupt a survivor from throwing down a pallet or leaping through a window without the perfect setup.

  • As a new player myself the grind before me can be a bit daunting. I only have a few hours a day to play this game, and if there's one thing I've learned from watching a lot of streams is that you're going to want to level up a lot of characters if you want to have the best perks equipped for a single survivor/killer. Because of this most of the time I find myself waiting around to see what the shrine of secrets will unveil. Sometimes I get what I want, but most of the time I don't.

Personally to counter all of this grinding I would appreciate it if bhvr incorporated experience boosts or blood hunts more often. Considering the game has been out for almost four years now, new players need a leg up for all the amount of grinding that lies before them.

  • Ghostface. For whatever reason gamers love to facecamp with Ghostface, and it flat out ruins what should be an otherwise enjoyable match.

Oddly enough, prime time is when matchmaking gets even worse for me. Killer queues are instant, but the matchmaking is consistently red/purple rank SWFs over and over, generally with one super low rank friend with them.

Yeah prime time is when I get the worst turnouts. Unfortunately between work and parenting that's really the only time I have to play. 😕

Ive always assumed that playing during peak weekend hours would give you the best chance of meeting the +/- of 6 rule. I would think the presence of the most generous amount of killers and survivors would allow for closer mm'ing results.

I might be a wacko, but i think the sweet spot for killer is on sat + sun during 12pm - 5pm. Mm'ing usually seems good enough and survivors mostly chill types.

If the rule of 6 is indeed a thing, then I've encountered far too many scenarios where it has not applied to the matches I've had as killer. When I was a level 15 Killer I was still going up against single-level survivors that were outside of the rule of 6, and it still happens to this day.

I don't know if the devs have just thrown their hands up and said "screw it" until the new matchmaking system is in place, but right now there is no consistency for new players or experienced players.

  • @Dr_Loomis said:

'Too scared to play killer' ...gawd that sounds a sad state of affairs.

Survivors should be literally scared of the killer.

If the game could find a good balance whilst having the killer as a legitimate threat who should be feared, we'd be laughing.

    Unfortunately...can see that happening.

I know it's so damn backwards right now! LOL

  • @Chicagopimp2019 said:

I have a bigger fear of playing solo survivor and being paired up with dbag teammates...lol. Every so often, I find myself having to listen to my teammates ######### in end game chat about how much they hate solo queues and how I didnt do anything (despite three iridescent emblems). Sorry I'm not in your SWF and dont get constant info on where the killer is going and who is coming to rescue you....

Killer is almost less stressful in that way. I expect to be matched against salty survivors. Getting teamed up with them is something else....

At least one of the nice things about playing on console is that you don't have to be subjected to end game chat. I also have it set up to where I only receive messages from friends so randoms that I play with can't send me salty messages. This is why I hope one day this game gets bots. Hell if the devs behind the mobile game can incorporate bots, then I don't see why the same can't be done for the main game. If the developers behind the Friday the 13th game were able to do it, then hopefully the same can be done for dead by daylight.

  • I'm on the PS4 as well and I've experienced much of the same things you have. I'm a rank 7 survivor, but more often than not I usually get matched against a double-digit killer. But as a double-digit killer myself, I'm constantly being matched against single ranks, or worse, red rank swf. I don't get it. As many have attested too, the matchmaking in this game is seriously messed up, so hopefully the new system they have in place will fix something.

I would say try not to let it get to you and just stick it out, but I'm at a point to where it's happening so frequently to me that I can't be bothered to play killer much anymore. At the very least hop back in when the new MMR is up and running. Hopefully within a few months time things will be a lot better.

  • @EvilJoshy said:

Not to burst your bubble. Really I don't mean to sound like a dick but the game doesn't consider you that good. The MM in this game is god awful. The reason it keeps throwing reds at you is they have been waiting for 10 mins and you were the first available sacrifice to be thrown at them. Unfortunately when playing as killer, the game doesn't give 2 shits about you because we are the minority.

From my understanding the game at first looks for someone of similar rank. If it cant find one it expands the search criteria. If it still cant find one it will eventually throw the first killer it finds. Due to some balance issues, patches and other things. There isn't many people playing killer anymore. New players like you are being matched with people who have every meta perk in the game. This doesn't encourage people to play killer or stick around. So the problem continues. They have a new MM in place and hopefully it will improve things after a few months. If it makes you feel better rank really doesn't reflect skill so much as time played that month.

Don't worry I don't take your message the wrong way. Not at all. I know the matchmaking is less than stellar in this game, but it's one thing when you're being matched against single rank survivors and you yourself aren't a single rank killer, but it's another thing entirely when the game throws a double-digit killer against red rank survivors. If I have to wait a little while longer to be matched up against survivors closer to my level, then so be it.

  • @Bovinity said:

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/U26DCXUUJKGT/image.png

Was a 4-man SWF, all of them were Claudettes. What a nightmare.

And this isn't even that bad an example. You'll just get full groups of rank 1's sometimes!

But yeah, the matchmaking just throws killers to the wolves.

    IMG_20200601_195237~2.jpg

I feel you. This is why I don't stick around to play killer much anymore.

  • I appreciate the encouragement all! Hopefully this new matchmaking system goes into effect this month like the devs said it would. Right now it just feels like I'm a new swimmer being thrown into a pool and expecting to compete against Olympic swimmers. Hopefully the learning curve isn't so sharp in the coming months.

  • @Lx_malice said:

Honestly I find solo survivor alot more stressful than killer because at least as killer you don't have to rely on strangers. But you shouldn't be scared to play just because you might lose especially when you're a new player in the process of learning. Play more. Build up your experience. Learn how to mindgame and run loops. Check out some good killer players and learn from them. (Otzdarva, Tru3ta1nt, Zubatlel). Happy killing.

Actually I do watch quite a few streams. My personal favorite is ohmwrecker! But it's not the losing that bothers me, it's not getting a chance to earn blood points. Being new I'm still trying to unlock a lot of stuff so I'm at a point to where all I care about are bloodpoints, but getting matched against red rank survivors that know the ins and outs of every map and loop just completely wrecks me, and I walk out with bloodpoints that are barely higher than what I would get as a survivor. Even with BBQ equipped I'm lucky to hook more than one survivor. It's all so frustrating.

  • @DelsKibara said:

It's perfectly normal to feel a little anxious when playing Killer, purely because you are all alone against 4 other players. 🙂

As for you facing Red Ranks, the devs are currently working on an alternative matchmaking method which would match you with players who are equally as skilled as you. So you won't have to worry about them in the near future.

Boy that can't come soon enough! My last killer match which was two days ago had me going up against a rank 4, two rank 3, and a rank 7. I really want to play some more killer matches, but that was my fifth match in a row like that and I'm just too damn tired to bother anymore.😔

  • @TragicSolitude said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1326891#Comment_1326891

Yeah, matchmaking's not as important on the PTB because a lot of people don't "play for real" on the PTB. They go in to test stuff out, have fun trying the new things. The PTB doesn't count for actual rankings or anything, so nothing that happens really matters.

I will say, though, I have seen matchmaking that bad in the live game, at least on PS4. I have gone up against four red rank survivors as a rank 16 or 15 killer.

Same. I'm on PS4 too and this was my last match.😕 I just leveled up Freddy and I really want to play some matches with him, but every matchmaking set up that I have had as a killer looked like this.

    IMG_20200601_195237~2.jpg

  • @TragicSolitude said:

Matchmaking literally does not exist on the Public Test Biuld. It used to, but no one could get matches, so now matchmaking is disabled on the PTB.

Gotcha. Thank goodness because holy cow my heart bled for that killer! 😂

  • I will admit that having premonition on a cool down is kind of odd considering that spine chill has no cool down, and it has additional perks like increase repair speed and increase speed when opening the exits. The only caveat is that killer has to be looking in your general direction. Granted killers can counter spine chill pretty easily if they want to, but it does lead to a rather annoying play style (approaching generators while moonwalking, etc).

  • @oxygen said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1324221#Comment_1324221

Sure you can do that, but enforcing it and preventing people from (easily) circumventing it in a myriad of ways? Or even getting permission from the platform owners (Valve/Steam, Sony, Microsoft) to interfere with communication when they all have built-in ways to communicate? That's a different story.

At least they made it so the killer's perks/addons aren't visible until all survivors are dead and/or escaped, that was a good change with a similar motivation that could be done fairly easily.

Admittedly I wouldn't know the first thing that could be done to help this situation, but nothing is more frustrating for a killer than knowing that a swf group was able to communicate with the players left standing over where the hatch was because they saw it on another players camera feed.

  • @oxygen said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1324107#Comment_1324107

There's no way to "cut off communication". The only way you could do that was to straight up disable spectating itself.

Surely something can be done though. I'm no programmer, but I like to think that you could incorporate something that would prevent friends from being able to feed information back to the players left standing.

  • Jigsaw's map is already pretty damn creepy. I'm eager to see what they do with that!

  • Yeah having a swf group be able to communicate to their friends after dieing acts like an additional perk that killers don't have access to. Maybe cut off the communication if you're just spectating?

  • For me it's Ohmwrecker. The guy's really entertaining and quite good at the game, but the best part is that he plays for fun only. And I appreciate that he uploads losses along with his wins. Many streamers will only hand pick their wins to help sell the idea that they are better than they are, so I have a lot of appreciation for someone who can show off their less than stellar moments.👍

  • Yeah I've only been playing this game for a few months now and already the grind has me second guessing what I should invest in. Between work and parenting I only have a few hours a day to play DBD, so it would be nice if something like double bloodpoint weekends popped up often.

  • Since his chainsaw takes so long to rev up, I think they need to either get rid of the slowdown, or at the very least reduce the pause that he has when hitting an object with the chainsaw. At the very least that pause should be the same length as the hillbilly.

  • Honestly after being pitted against a red rank killer time and again, it can be a little refreshing having an AFK killer. It's the last thing that should happen, but at the same time as a level 8 survivor I shouldn't be having to face level 1 Killers either.

  • @JHondo said:

All of us green rank killers are playing against solid red Survivors 90% of the matches. Not sure if it's platform/region/swf/some other issue but that's where your 9-13 killers are at.

Exactly this. I'm a rank 13 killer, and all I get anymore are red rank swf teams. Playing as killer can be fun and get you a lot of blood points, but with the way this matchmaking has been going I don't feel compelled to keep playing as killer.
