Well technically speaking David was not perfect as he was more than likely written to just be straight before this point.

Sources or arguments for David being intended to be straight? Because… i didn’t see anything supporting this in his lore other than a briefly mentioned ex girlfriend which now makes even more sense on why she was only mentioned briefly.

actually the devs stated that at least one of their original characters was written with being LGBTQ+ in their mind - they didn’t reveal who they were talking about but it could have been David all along. It is fitting because of his relationship with his parents etc.

Right: so including even just a mild implication of of a relationship, including Wraith/ nurse which purely cosmetic, and Oni which does not even mention a partner. You listed 10 examples. One of which is Nurse who you used twice and the second is David, who is now homosexual. Which is exactly what I said. Out of the 10 you listed only one had his sexuality publicly celebrated (David). The developers wanted David to be gay, and they wanted to make sure everybody knows it. Which is why I said forced and awkward.

What makes it so awkward is that as you yourself stated it was already implied that he was straight. They then changed it. Now I understand that there are plenty of people who have dated one gender, and later felt more comfortable dating another, his lore makes sense. However it is hard to get an understanding of characters if you imply one thing and then change it years down the line.

You said it yourself Behaviour wanted to keep sexuality out of DBD and I fully support this. Which is why I am not interested in the lore but rather the tweet that Behaviour sent out to draw attention to this. Everything about this situation is forced and unsortable.

Were you speaking out when they forced to not include anything LGBTQ+ related while including heterosexuality though? Or is this argument only being used when it’s about supporting LGBTQ+?

and having had a heterosexual relationship doesn’t imply someone is heterosexual. As you said, actually MANY homosexual people have had heterosexual relationships in their past. This is actually making the story more believable and relatable.

Don’t focus too much on one tweet, or are you analyzing every one of their tweets like this? You are the one concentrating on this topic while BHVR has tweeted many other things since then, eg a concept artwork of the twins because they also have a tome story in this rift.

Not really because Nurse's husband has always been a core part of her backstory. David being gay has never been mentioned til now and all of sudden its all his character has become his entire backstory is now revolving around David being gay along with a huge announcement over it + a new terrible cosmetic that looks straight out of stereotypeville

his second tome is about him being gay/coming out and the struggles he has because of it. They didn’t rewrite his background story or first time and all his characteristics stay exactly the same.

Me when I take what someone said and twist to mean something different lol. I didn't say LGBT people are zoo animals I said we're being TREATED like zoo animals when a company takes an LGBT character and says "LOOK AT THIS WE HAVE A NEW GAY CHARACTER WOW LOOK HES GAY HES GAY NOW LOOK OVER HERE HES GAY!!!!" ######### else is that supposed to be?

Luckily BHVR hasn’t done this, all they did was make a tiny tweet as a follow up to their announcement almost two years ago and that’s it. The community is blowing it up out of proportion.

    @Volcz said:

They ruined my first real main (nothin against the gays but he's a Chad and it seems they just labeled him gay for the sake of needing more representation). Eenie minie moe type stuff.

Sucks cause he is definitely the 'player' out of the entire roster, besides Felix. I feel like Felix or Ace would have been a better fit considering his costumes. Oh well. Not like I play him anymore, got my girls Meg & Feng anyways.

You have literally no knowledge about the lore, do you? Felix and Ace are the least fitting to be gay and it makes perfect sense for David as there is nothing contradictory in his lore. David was always the guy drinking to much and starting fights in bars etc. You having a head canon shouldn’t dictate how BHVR expands their lore.

  • @RequiemLestat said:

Dude, it's made a SMALL portion of the LGBTQ community happy. More straight people are happy for the LGBTQs than the latter. BHVR did bare minimum in regards to their respresentation. They didn't make a brand new character with perks, lore and cosmetics, they just announced out of the blue out of nowhere that David King is gay... I empathise more with THAT gripe. (personal note: Steve has that sailor outfit and they made the Peaky Blinder gay?)

Steve is a licensed (straight) character. That outfit is part of his job.

and they have written a tome about David’s struggle of coming out, it’s just the tweet that felt like our if the blue.

Representation in media matters and is needed for normalization

I guess this is the part that kind of bothers me about the way this is handled. Normally when a tome is announced, there's some hint about what's going to be in it and that's that. This tome is being met with a big splash page about how proud they are of adding a gay character, how they worked with GaymerX to get this done, talking about their community...

It's not normal. It's not how they normally do lore reveals. So it doesn't work for normalisation because it is specifically lifted out as something exceptional.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2930841#Comment_2930841

David fits the 'stereotype' perfectly fine. There's a lot of macho muscle guys in the gay community who like going around shirtless, so David does work for that.

I see this announcement more as a follow up to their announcement to include characters that are LGBTQ+ from the Tweet almost two years ago.

it’s obvious they spent much time on this representation to make it fitting and not a bad stereotype and this announcement is just celebrating their work with GaymerX and the fact they are proud of how it worked out.

and it’s also a response to those (like me) who criticized them for making this announcement and then not delivering.

also, while it does feel blown up it’s literally just a tweet among hundreds. People are focusing way to much on this announcement.

  • Sorry, it’s about all those homophobic reactions to the reveal that David is gay. Some people hide behind the argument they aren’t homophobic and only have a problem with how it has been announced while those people still make homophobic statements.

  • @Icaurs said:

Who are these straight characters? Can you please tell me where it is stated in their lore they are straight?

Off the top of my head less then maybe 10 out of a full roster of close to 50 I think are even mentioned to have a partner. I cannot think of anyone else (besides David KIng) too have their sexuality directly mentioned. If somebody can tell me which character and show me what lore that would be great. However there is not many. Instead of adding it into the law they felt the need to make a big public tweet about it to make sure everyone knows. Its forced, awkward, and in unnatural.

straight relationships are actually mentioned way more often than people give it credit for:

    Nurse and her husband

Frank and Julie in their tome lore (which was on the edge of being disgusting and definitely being shoved down our throats)

David having had a girlfriend (turns out he is not straight, but that was still a heterosexual relationship in the lore)

    Felix and his pregnant wife

Oni is the direct ancestor of Spirit thus implied to have had a wife

Dwight having a crush on a female coworker (though admittedly this one is pretty low on the list)

Ace referred to as womanizer no some cosmetics

Wraith and Nurse having (romantically) implied cosmetics/texts

    other characters in lore:

multiple parents explicitly stated as father and mother (Jake, David, Spirit, Trapper (not sure about his mother mentioned), Hillbilly, Meg (pretty sure her father is mentioned), for others I guess it’s mostly one parent mentioned and thus not explicitly heterosexual)

Pretty sure other relationships in tome/background stories (shout out to the one gay relationship in one of Haddies story’s i think - which didn’t get any further announcement by BHVR)

keep in mind many of these were added while BHVR stated they want to leave sexuality completely out of the game - while actually including heterosexuality and excluding only anything LGBTQ+ related.

If they think thats an issue they should think of a new character that actually makes sense to be LGBTQ. Announcing a random character to be gay all of a sudden is just forced inclusion and doesnt feel genuine.

Read the lore, it’s far from forced or not genuine, it fits very well and actually makes the previous lore make more sense. Couldn’t have done it better lore-wise.

the announcement I get, that one can be said to feel forced. But only because this argument can be used for literally any way of announcing a character as gay. That’s the nice thing about this ‚ it feels forced‘ argument - in most cases there is no counterargument (also no real pro argument but well…) - but in David’s case it’s far from forced.

  • It may not be homophobic but it’s just stupid to think David being gay doesn’t feel right. The lore and the character are very fitting.

especislly Felix and Ace don’t fit being gay as Felix has a canon wife that’s pregnant and who he loves dearly and Ace is described to be a womanizer in some of his cosmetics. Writing then as gay would actually be retconning and would feel forced and random. In case of David it fits super well with all his lore and actually some aspects now make more sense than before.

  • I am certain they didn’t have a problem with you being trans but the way how you have announced it. You probably shoved it in their face and all.

    /s

  • Thanks!

I have literally no idea what was going on… like… it’s probably not 4v1 anymore but?

good thing they are moving away from being a blatant DbD clone i guess

  • Videogames are a medium and part of real life just like TV shows and movies and books etc. Representation in media matters and is needed for normalization, it may not end homophobia on its own and literally nobody said it would but it certainly can and does help towards the right direction and without positive representation in media we wouldn’t be where we are now.

Also it’s not forced in our faces. It’s one tweet and a blog post on their website. If you are not able to ignore this tweet that’s on you and your relation to the topic - I certainly ignore like 90 % of all of their tweets or forget immediately what they were about. They have worked on this representation for almost two years and they are proud of how it turned out - there is really no harm in trying to celebrate it as it IS part of their real life and that of many others - even if concerning just a fictional character.

and you can disagree all you want. It is a fact there have been many people on these forums in past threads about LGBTQ+ inclusion that confirm they would be against inclusion the way you just described it. There is literally no way inclusion of a non-straight playable character wouldn’t have turned out into these kinda threads and discussions and argumentations.

  • Could you at least leave the link to the trailer or something? Now I gotta search for it ;)

People complain about everything unfortunately, but I personally would have preferred if they had made a new character for this representation push instead of slapping a label onto David and calling it a day

Fair enough for your personal preference. But I guess we can still expect further additions and inclusion!

although what I heard about the tome story it’s very well written and not just slapped on! It ties in stuff from his previous tome and background story about his ex and his relationship to his parents. The tweet on its own may feel like it’s been slapped on though.

  • @DragonMasterDarren said:

Speaking as someone who honestly could not give less of a damn about what people’s tastes in partners is since it really shouldn’t have a effect on how they are perceived by others, it’s how it was done rather then that it was done that makes it seem a bit disingenuous, as several other people have pointed out

Had they just made a new character for it, no one would mind, it’s the fact that they took a already established character and then suddenly slap the LGBT tag onto them that makes the whole thing seem like a PR stunt

But that’s just my 2 cents, since as I said, I really don’t care who David wants to sleep with so long as it isn’t children, animals, or the dead

Had they just made a new character for it, no one would mind, it’s the fact that they took a already established character and then suddenly slap the LGBT tag onto them that makes the whole thing seem like a PR stunt

you would hope so but that’s not true. In the past people have stated how it would feel disingenuous if it was a new character for various reasons: it would just be pandering, they would do it for the money, the lore would be poorly written and one dimensional etc pp

As I, and many others have said. It is not that they made him gay, it is HOW they made him gay and the way they made they drew such attention to it.

As I've said in the past, I think this whole thing has been a step backwards. Again, not because he's gay, but because of the way it's been handled, both by BHVR and by the community. A person/character being gay, is not something special and shouldn't be treated as such. If it turned out that Clown liked sucking on more than a finger, would that change the character in a meaningful way? Would he not still be a fast fat man that laughs and throws his piss at you?

If it's the case that we SHOULD make it into this amazing thing, should we celebrate how someone's straight as well? In the context of DBD, should Jane or someone be celebrated and have an announcement for liking the opposite sex? That would be equality right? So why aren't we doing that exactly?

In all honesty, as a person that's into both. I say good on bhvr and it's nice to see a gay character, but.. I genuinely don't see why they, and by extension we, need to big it up so much. Just let a character be a character, whatever they're into. Just say "Ok," and move on like you would with anyone else in the game.

If it's the case that we SHOULD make it into this amazing thing, should we celebrate how someone's straight as well? In the context of DBD, should Jane or someone be celebrated and have an announcement for liking the opposite sex? That would be equality right? So why aren't we doing that exactly?

well aren’t you forgetting how LGBTQ+ people have been (and still are) being unjustly treated for just existing? I would gladly live in a world where being LGBTQ+ was being treated the same as being heterosexual, but we are not living in such a world. And while it is better than it has been especially in the modern western world it’s still not in any way how it should/can be. So as long as heterosexual people aren’t been oppressed, killed and far worse for just existing there is no reason to celebrate their representation in a videogame which already had heterosexuality represented since almost the release while explicitly excluding LGBTQ+ characters up to two years ago - and even then they needed this long to deliver because they tried to make it in a way to please all parties - and reading all those people saying how and how not they should have done it and what they did wrong and right: apparently people - including yourself and myself - wouldn’t have accepted it just with an ‚okay‘ anyways regardless on how they potentially would have handeled it if done differently.

it’s okay for them to celebrate their first LGBTQ+ character if they feel like it’s is worth the celebration. You may not feel that way which is okay as well. But then again. You can just not pay attention to it. It was one tweet and one blog post on their website and the rest came from the community - something not in the hands of anyone and certainly heavily driven by homophobic people that may or may not outright state their homophobia.

    Exactly. It’s homophobia.

  • @darkcloudlink said:

There's nothing wrong with implementing a gay character in the game, but as a gay guy, I've had my sexuality thrown around everywhere to everyone since I came out in middle school a decade ago. People treat me like I'm some sort of endangered puppy that needs protection. When I play a game about killing survivors/escaping a killer, I don't want some random character's sexuality to be the most important aspect of the game overnight. And with all of BHVR's pandering, the twitter posts, the lore additions, it all just feels like BHVR is saying "Hey look, guys look! We have gay people now, isn't it amazing?". Is being something that isn't straight such a big deal? You don't need to partner with a professional company to write lore for regular people. All of this stuff is just so extra. If being gay, lesbian, bi, etc, is really accepted and normal, I would appreciate if they just stopped putting so much attention to it. Not being straight doesn't make me or anyone else special. Representation is fine. Pandering is not.

David King being gay isn’t his most important aspect/trait at all. It’s just part of his current (second) tome and hasn’t been mentioned before and if everyone was just okay with it and nobody would find ‚arguments‘ against it it wouldn’t be such a big deal. That twitter post and the post on their website aren’t more than that, there are plenty of other Tweets that are being completely ignored so why concentrate on this one?

representation is important to normalize being LGBTQ+, we are sadly not there yet (and frankly if you feel like that I envy you and your bubble) and thus it is worth mentioning if a medium such as a videogame finally adds representation after announcing it almost two years ago.. especially after they have been kinda (unintentionally) exclusive saying they wouldn’t add any sexual orientations and topics like that while still including multiple heterosexual relationships.

  • @RenRen said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2930011#Comment_2930011

Imo I don't think that's completely true. Maybe with other characters sure but a new character? I don't think that would be the case.

I also disagree with it being implemented well. David's been a character for a while and now they make his sexuality? It feels kinda forced which is something that happens in a lot of games as of recent years. Once again this is my opinion. I do like the idea of everyone having a character they can relate to but this feels a bit off.

I have seen people argue in previous discussions/threads that they would be against a new character being the first LGBTQ+ rep. There are many people that are against inclusion but since there is no real actual arguments they try to find excuses

  • @RenRen said:

I'm pretty sure people don't have a problem with a gay character being in the game. It's more so that it's David and the way they implemented it.

I am pretty sure that people having a problem with it being David would have a problem with it being any other char as well or even a new char. Though many of them wouldn’t admit it.

it’s been implemented pretty well and fitting btw.

  • Well, why do you care that a survivor is labeled as gay (when we had multiple heterosexual relationships mentioned all the time)? This is just a game, if a character being confirmed gay makes you ‚sick‘ you should really reconsider why it does it. It’s just a Videogame, you can ignore this announcement and literally nothing changes for you.

It’s not your personal sexuality. You are not being marketed or glorified.

Davids in-game reveal is not poor representation at all. And not for direct monetary gain. The tweet was maybe overdone but… if they wouldn’t have done it others would come out and say it was handled poorly as well.

  • @StarLost said:

As I said, it's probably a little of both.

'Allies' has always been an odd word, but if you're saying that there was an ideological basis here...maybe?

But my guess is that this is primarily 'this game has always been something of a haven for LGBTs, and they've been asking for a gay survivor forever, so this will create a lot of good will and maybe get them to buy a cosmetic or two'.

Which again, I have zero issues with.

I wasn’t talking about an ideological basis. I am talking about people like Mandy - who as far as I am aware are not LGBTQ+ on their own but support the inclusion and are happy about this. Without the thought of just being able to sell more cosmetics due to it.

  • @SMitchell8 said:

Sexuality should be left out of the game because look at the attention/arguments and division it causes. Its a video game and the only things that really matter are game performance, fun and aesthetically pleasing. Does it REALLY matter what sexual orientation a pixilated character is a cat and mouse murder game ....

Players should be able to decide for themselves what sexual preference they have.

Just because something gets attention or argumentations doesn’t mean it should be excluded.

and sexuality was a part of DbD since Nurse was introduced and since then it was part of the lore plenty of times.

it’s a video game - a medium. Let the devs do with it what they want. Let them tell the stories the way they want. Don’t try to dictate and force something just because you feel uncomfortable with it.

and the players can still decide themselves?? What kind of statement is that?

  • @StarLost said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2929613#Comment_2929613

Sure. I have no issue with David being gay any more than I'd have an issue with David being straight. Because I have zero investment in the canon lore and prefer to make up my own little narratives ingame.

I definitely think that part of this decision comes down to money though - looking at social media, this is the most anyone's talked about DbD in a long time. But I don't think that's a bad thing - if this helps to get more people into the game, all the better.

To be fair, it would have blown up on social media even if they didn’t announce it at all. And while from a corporate standpoint it might be a money decision - from the people behind it (the staff, the devs) we know it’s important for them as we actually know plenty of them are LGBTQ+ allies or even part of the community.

  • @StarLost said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2929592#Comment_2929592

To be fair though, I don't think I've seen a single person complaining that there was LGBT inclusion - it's more about how it was done, and I see as many 'do more' or 'why not a new character?' posts (and one bizarre 'this is queer erasure because David's traditionally masculine and that's not okay' thread) as I do 'I liked David being straight' posts.

To be fair, people are finding excuses to be against LGBTQ+ inclusion and you can make arguments against any way how it is executed.

as i said, if it was a new character there would be plenty of people saying it’s forced, tokenism, only doing it for the money, pandering etc pp. And it being an old character doesn’t rule out new characters being added.

and David was never stated to be straight.

  • @AetherBytes said:

I guarantee you 90 % of the people that are now complaining about it being an old character(retconning, playing it safe, pandering) would also complain about it being a new character (tokenism, only doing it for the money, pandering)

and they didn’t change David at all. He was never confirmed straight. And no one complained about the tome where he suddenly got a girlfriend while there was no partner mentioned in the initial backstory.

people just like to complain about LGBTQ+ inclusion and are using excuses as to why.

  • straight relationships are actually mentioned way more often than people give it credit for:

all of these weren’t necessary and could have been told the exact same way without mentioning the genders/pronouns explicitly while still telling the same story. Except for David as they apparently gave a reason for why he had a girlfriend and they were telling a coherent story.

Take Yui as another example: in her tome lore an ex partner is mentioned, but only by name and not by gender/pronoun. This was actually pretty well and subtly done.

as for that big news from BHVR regarding David being gay: can you guys show me where that is? All I have seen is a twitter tweet with a (admittedly rather big) text on their website which you have to go out of your way of to read. Which is also kinda a response to their announcement from (two!) years ago and a response to those (including me) who criticized them for not delivering (sooner).

was there an in-game announcement, dev stream, YouTube video or even in-game event that i missed?? Please I wanna see that BIG announcement!

also: they never turned David gay or changed him in any way. They told a story about a struggle in his life he had to overcome regarding himself and his parents - I haven’t read it yet but from what I have been told it’s well written and not in any way retconning anything but tying past mentions like his ex girlfriend and his rough relationship with his parents together and actually making it an even more believable story.

But every time this comes up, people say it is not holding the game hostage if other Survivors are still alive. Every. Single. Time.

Thanks for the post. I guess i will save it up as I only found a screenshot of it just now :)

There is a possibility to finish the game so it's the teammates who are keeping the game hostage if they don't act.

Sorry I am just repeating what I have seen stated from official side. Bodyblocking one survivor during the match for a long time is reportable.

If you are the last player in game and the EGC hasn't stared, it's bannable. (Taking the game hostage : do as Pulsar has said)

Otherwise your teammates need to finish the gens and leave (or It'll be over in a couple of minutes). (For future reference)

It’s still bannable even if you are not the last survivor, as you can’t control what your (possibly random) teammates are doing.

though in EGC you are right, there it’s ‚okay‘

  • I thought there had been an update of the Unreal Engine for DbD in the past. But apparently it’s been on Unreal Engine 4 since release. I am obviously misremembering something. Doesn’t matter.

  • This is pretty much ‚intentional‘ game design - and I agree it’s just frustrating and unnecessary. Especially since it’s more of a problem for controller players. I struggle with this as well (controller but on Steam), I kinda got used to it and can somewhat reliably track the survs but very few seem to move faster to the sides and just vanish (and then suddenly have super much distance to me).

sadly, I don’t have any other advice than what you already said yourself..

  • Yeah. It really baffles me how this is not a thing already.

  • It could go on sale some time around the anniversary (which is mid June). But no guarantee to that as those sales are not really revealed before they happen..

i would still say Steam version is the best version, availability, PTB is only on Steam, Steam supports controllers naturally and it is part of cross progression (along with Stadia and Epic and other platforms might join in the future)

Yeah I have all dlc and most characters p3 , I guess I'll wait till it comes out then.

Oh and visuals don't really matter to me. I play Dbd mobile quite regularly with a friend

It’s not only visuals though, it’s also performance-wise the worst version. FPS are low and there is noticeable input delay - especially in docked mode.

It got looked at because it was widely used.

It was changed for completely different reasons:

We took a close look at the perk to identify what makes it so frustrating to play against. Three key issues were identified:

Its punishment of new players or those who can't hit Great Skill Checks. Newer players trying to help veterans with generator repairs tend to make the situation worse rather than better.

The passive nature of the gameplay pressure it provides means that there is a huge amount of potential with very little effort or risk on behalf of The Killer.

Its inconsistency due to the random nature of the appearance interval of skill checks.

Thx for posting this. I actually rolled my eyes seeing the title because I thought I need to find that post again.

  • Wait.. I thought they had updated their UE version once already, but it was developed and is still on UE4 and transitioning to UE5 would be the first upgrade in this sense?

what is my memory confusing here?

  • It’s not here yet, only Steam, Epic and Stadia have cross Progression.

but Switch was confirmed to get it - at some point. They ran into technical issues (probably due to licensed content) and can’t commit to a date though.

  • Perks - especially on the survivor side - don’t suffer from power creep. The healing boon (Circle of Healing) is the exception here and the only real addition to the Meta since David/Dead Hard. And the Midchapter will bring a nerf for CoH. On the killer side, there have been added new viable perks - but still not really power creep.

Matchmaking just got further tweaks and isn’t in the best state. But rank based matchmaking wasn’t good either (and didn’t even work as intended). further adjustments for SBMM are planned though (currently there is the backfill problem - if a killer dodges a lobby those survivors will get matched with a killer who might be completely out of skill range; also your hidden rank doesn’t go down when you don’t play for a long time - both these issues have been acknowledged by the devs).

both sides have plenty of players that only play to win - or only play to make the game as unenjoyable as possible for the other side. But that has been the case for a long time and is definitely nothing new. I am playing since Curtain Call chapter and haven’t really noticed that kind of shift and always wonder how some people are so lucky to just get bad matches since MMR was introduced….

facecamping is btw another issue the devs try to tackle - they had several internal ideas that as of yet didn’t make it to a PTB because it was mostly abusable by the surv team or for other reasons.

the game itself isn’t in its worst state - though the community kinda is and is making the game as unhealthy as possible.
