I know the drill, I went AFK as you can see the crow above me.

I just don't understand why some people feel the need to take every opportunity to be unsportsmanlike.

Tl;Dr: people are jerks. But it's complicated.

I've actually been thinking about this lately.

I think the biggest force involved here is use of dominant strategies. With a side helping of internet anonymity.

Basically dominant strategy is when you find one strategy in a game that is objectively better than others at obtaining a win condition, regardless of what another player may do.

Regardless of what the devs intend, for many people a TPK (or TPE) IS the win condition.

    Lemme make an analogy: Boxing.

Theoretically, if you took a gun to a boxing match and shot your opponent you would win regardless of what your opponent could do.

So, why aren't there more glocksings in boxings?

Things like refs, and rules, and regulations, and social pressures. If you shot your boxing opponent you would have to answer to ejections from the sport, other punishments, and shame from your audience. There are massive incentives to not shoot your opponent, and instead play by the agreeed upon rules of the sport.

In a game like DBD there are rules. But no refs. No audience, per se. Just you, and maybe your stream audience if you're into that.

On top of that, having a layer of internet between you and you're opponent WILL lead you to dehumanize them unless you make a special effort not to. Your brain will just default think of them as a part of the game, or a hostile hindrance, not another person.

So what this leads to is this, and I hate to use the word but it's apt, toxic salad of human behavior.

    1. If your goal is to achieve your win condition, you will gravitate towards the most effective strategy to make this happen.

    2. If you're like everyone else on the planet, you're not going to lose a lot of sleep over beating someone at a video game.

So when these two factors add up, killers AND survivors will just default to doing the thing that is most likely to give them the emotional hit of getting that win. And they won't care if they bruised someone's pride along the way because, well, they win.

I feel like the only way to counteract this behavior would be super fine, granular and nuanced control over the game rules and disputes of those rules. In short: a ref.

But let's be realistic, that's a stupid idea. The amount of effort expended to give dbd a system that could function like a ref, making human calls that computers struggle to in cases of like and kind, would be a stupid waste of time. No one wants to adjudicate an online game so randos will play nice.

The closest approximation would either be a system of gentlmens agreements that dictate what is and isn't considered fair play. (...which we are clearly incapable of doing. It just turns into 'survivor rulebook' and 'killer rulebook' people just disagree and get angry and then dig their heels in. ) OR something like custom servers where players could tweak what rules do and don't apply and how they work...which isn't a great system for dbd because the player base likely isn't large enough to support such a splintered menu of choices.

So, to wrap up jerking myself off I guess...people act unsportsmanlike because they just want to win and doing what it takes to do that has so few consequences they don't care.

And fixing that is really tough.

(If you read this far for whatever fakkn reason, thanks. I just brain dumped because I could and I like this forum.)

Haven't seen an auto-aim thread in a while. I believe it's called Animation Enhancement by most people now as well as the "official" term the devs use. There was a stream talking about it some time back as well.

Here's a thread where a dev talks about it a bit.

Yeah, this is most of the info I was thinking about. I didn't realize that last sentence was clickable. My bad.

  • They broke this down a while back didn't they? Weren't there even graphics displaying how the hit cone works?

The 'auto aim' doesn't change -what- you hit, it redirects the camera to show where you -did- hit.

The camera redirect seems to be implemented to insure the player is oriented towards the target of their strike. Not so that the game can ensure the player -has- a target.

To address the lifted survivor thing, I would hypothesize that the camera redirects towards the survivor being lifted by the entity because, for whatever reason, the model is still "allowed" to be hit.

So: killer swings >> game checks for hit >> registers hit on model of character being lifted >> turns view towards model.

Also, why are these threads always so aggressive and...personal, for lack of a better word. It's like people have a rough round, or get frustrated and need to come tell some anonymous-to-them dev to go screw their dog and die.

You all know this is just a game, right?

Curious about why the two different yes and no answers.

Interestingly enough, for both versions of the poll there seem to be a roughly equal number of responses for "Yes" and "Yes, etc."

It's too early to draw any conclusions from that, but it is intriguing. Also, something I'll likely modify in future because that does seem to muddy the data ever so slightly.

  • Note: Posting the poll in the main discussion board has brought in more responses. Thanks folks and keep em coming. I'm enjoying seeing the differences between the two chunks of the community and I'm looking forward to sharing the results.

Curious about why the two different yes and no answers.

Just in case folks felt yes/no was too limiting, but didnt want to elaborate. Slash, toi maybe get some discussion started.

Kind of changed my mind about them after the poll got rolling, but can't change it now. In the future, I'll probably try to keep the responses even more neutral.

Hi, can you define winning for me?

For the purposes of this poll "winning" is your personal definition of winning. I may try to address more specific definitions in a future poll.

  • The Reddit poll is actually getting quite a few responses. I might just make a simple infographic so the infos all in one place.

    Thanks for voting!

  • Side note: I'm gonna mostly refrain from sharing my own opinions as I want peeps to share theirs without my input.

I'm also running the same poll on the subreddit to see how they compare. If anyone would like, after a couple days I can make a post for comparison. :)

  • Yes, but also her new chase music must also be Old Town Road.

  • I was thinking about this earlier and I'd love to see a "Deck System."

Like, pre match you can see each surv and killers deck of 8-9 perks, but they only take in their chosen 4 of those.

Then the use/countering of perks isn't entirely left to chance. And more like a back and forth between players.

Kinda like a sideboard in MtG.

  • I thought Wraith was Eastern European or something, dunno why. Just didn't give much thought to where 'Ojomo' came from.

I think I just saw a Russian name in Azarov and my brain decided the surname I didn't immediately recognize was probably regionally adjacent.

But an African name makes more sense with the flavor of his add ons and stuff. Though symbology, folk iconography, and magic could tie to either or.

    Neat, TIL.

They need to buff the range at which he can reach to survivors with his harpoon, otherwise he just feels like a weird combination of huntress and legion.

I don't know what the exact range is right now, but you got me thinking...what if they cranked the range up and allowed the harpoon to ignore collision on objects under a certain size (Like tree branches, gen poles, etc) only on the -outbound- trip?

So you could potentially get a crossmap chain snipe without being foiled by an errant twig or a bit of garbage. And the survivor wouldn't be auto-screwed because they'd just break away if they weren't afk.

How terrifying would it be as survivor to just get slammed with that harpoon from across the map and start getting dragged away?

Even if you do break away in a few seconds, itd shake things up.

  • You know if you do get a bad game you could still just DC, right? As long as you don't make a consistent habit of it your 'penalty' is gonna be "you can't re-queue for 5 seconds."

Nearly every community is toxic, I don't think you can find any multiplayer game community that isn't toxic. Sure dbd is near the top with it's toxicity but that's due to the killer/survivor divide.

It's a shame but it's not surprising sadly. Best thing to do is to kill them with kindness, you'd be surprised how often people change their tune.

Ive only been playing for a couple hundred hours, but I have literally never encountered a survivor or killer, who felt like being a salty jerk, that hung around for more than a one liner in chat.

I have had more than a dozen people or so explicitly apologize because they thought they were rude in game. Just the other day a player, literally named for snoot booking, apologized for bullying and booping even though I killed him. Sweetest David ever.

The only place I see -real- salt and toxicity is from the cry arse babies who come here to whine about whatever they think made them lose on a given day.

Like, for real guys. You all get so tilted while the rest of us are out here having fun and killing each other.

And when the game gets frustrating? I feel like most of us go have a snack or something...

For what it's worth, all of the killers are still humanoid. Humanoid != human, it just means that they're human shaped (bipedal, two arms sticking off the side of their torso, and a "head").

    Anthro-Cujo confirmed.

That was literally my first thought. Came here to see if I was alone.

It's a joke, but I'd friggin love it.

  • I recently got bodyblocked into a chest by a rando dweet at gideon. He held me there until the wraith showed up and uncloaked.

He stood there and booped at me while BingBong gave him the best '#########' his beady lil peepers can pull.

Then BingBoi hauled off and slapped dweet upside the dome. Then proceeded to tunnel him for a couple hooks for being a dingus.

When BigD eventually DCd wraith came back and led me around to a couple gens. Wed had another DC by then so Wraith just kinda adopted me.

We were very happy until egc, when he spanked me stupid and hung me on the hook for funsies.

    BestBingBong.

    2 killers=8 survivors

That's what I thought, but I don't know if itd scale linearly like that.

I feel like the main draw would be the extra team aspect. So it would be 99% swf anyway, lol.

Plus imagine being 1 of 6 against, like, double nurses or Oni. Sure it'd be really hard to win, but it'd probably actually be scary again. XD

  • Those are some awesome ideas. I know I'd love to see a couple implemented.

Funny enough, I think my favorite part of all your ideas is the mini event thing.

Maybe instead of every other weekend, there could be a mid season event, maybe even a double BP weekend or week, where the new game mode launches alongside that seasons hot fix or something.

That way it could be a fun event players can plan for, without running into choice paralysis too quickly.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/126497/fun-ideas-for-new-game-modes

I like the dual killer idea. Not sure about the gen and survivor count to make it fun for all parties though. It would be cool even if it were just a Kill your friends mode.

Also in Kill your friends it'd be cool to manipulate game mechanics. For instance: gen speed, foot speed, hooks till death, DK mode lol etc.

I kinda felt like just a 2v4 could easily slip into a steamroll and not be as fun for survivors. But more bodies to kill would spread the pressure as it were.

Plus, maybe killers wanna have friends too, man.

  • @[Deleted User] said:

This isn't terribly creative or anything but I'd like a vanilla mode. No perks, items (aside from what is found in in-game chests), or offerings for either side.

I actually quite like the idea of a perkless match. I wonder how it would play out? Especially for low mobility killers that really need tracking perks on big maps.

Maybe a vanilla mode could take place in a special mapset? Like, a labyrinth arena set. Call it Minotaur Mode, lol.

  • @danielbird11 said:

I would like a first person game mode for survivors. Where the same objectives need to be done. But it would be way more scary because the killer is taller then you. And would look way more scary from a first person perspective. It also would not be that hard to implement. The devs could just give survivors the legion vaulting animations. And allow them to see their arms and legs while running and doing things to add to the immersion. What do you think?

I actually really like the idea of a fp camera for survivors. That would actually be alot more tense.

The 3pv camera is already pretty tense, just keeping an eye out when you're being stalked. Not having that range would give me the butthole clenches.

I'd imagine you'd have to have some way to balance it slightly so the survs aren't just outright crippled. Maybe like a 30% wider pov? Something to ramp the claustrophobia, but still allow that slight information edge over the killer.

  • I feel like 20% of this game's playerbase are having a screaming tantrum; while the other 80% are just continuing to play, blissfully unaware.

Yeah, totes. Having some kinda puzzle box related power would be mandatory, haha.

Plus, another killer who might just slap or claw you to death, and is an oversized fleshless monstrosity, just sits right with me and my HagLove, lol.

And maybe some cool moris where he'd suck survs down into withered husks. :D

Also disregard the double quote. I'm on mobile and am too dumb to fix it...
