  • Huh. I’ve seen Mobile do promo’s, but this is the first time Core seems to be doing it.

Wouldn’t put too much stock in it, though. It’s just advertising, and could have happened on any video.

Wasn't that code already available when they released the chapter? Because I've seen that banner and badge before today

It's the same one from the Vigenère cypher they dropped last week. I'm guessing most people didn't realise it was a code.

  • Good bird news!

A species of parakeet has been brought back from near-complete extinction in the wild, thanks to conservationists efforts!

After being locally extinct for a century in Belém, the host city of next year’s COP30 climate summit, it’s being reintroduced by conservationists who have so far released 50 individuals into the wild since 2018.

    More like this:

Efforts to protect the flamboyant flightless bird, including managing predators, have seen cagou numbers grow in the Pacific territory

The migratory birds were considered a delicacy, and the bird disappeared from Europe

  • Regarding Unknown, I’m guessing/hoping it’s just gonna be some add-on changes, maybe a slight cooldown adjustment.

  • I'm not expecting it to take itself very seriously. That said, it has to be a horror movie. As to what characters will be in it… who knows. Frank Stone uses its own characters, so I wouldn't be surprised if the movie did as well.

I believe the FNaF film was made by the same studios that are gonna do the DbD one, and it was fairly well received (by fans, anyway). While I don't expect anything beyond belief, I do think the studios involved at least care enough to deliver a solid film. More than the Gearbox CEO ever did, at least.

  • why is it so crunchy tho

  • Ah yes, GenRush, the perk. From Chuck Norris, I believe.

  • You… do know DbD came out in 2016, and has been adding dlc's ever since, right?

Like, what you're asking is…currently happening. And has been for 8 years now.

We can even roughly estimate when the next release will be, given the 3 month cycle they've been upholding since the Curtain Call chapter.

  • Nemesis is unique in that, by default, he has two “wipe” animations. One being where he clenches his fist, and the other being the roar.

If the roar is never playing, that might be a bug.

  • I'd say slugging with the express purpose of bleeding them out comes closest to being "toxic". Especially when, even after everyone's down, no effort is made to hook. Like, cmon man, you're wasting everyone's time here.

Slugging for the 4k is annoying, but somewhere I can at least understand it.

In itself, I find slugging generally inoffensive.

  • I mean, that's what happens when you design perks around a theme, not so much around balance.

  • Friends ‘Til the End from Chucky.

Unknown’s instant cross-map teleports make it uniquely suited to get value from it.

  • I’ve found you can make it retract earlier by hovering over it for a moment, then moving away from it.

    It’s still annoyingly placed, though.

  • That'd be a rework-level update. "Killer Tweaks" seems to be much smaller in scale.

  • In a match result sense and MMR sense, a loss is a loss.

Programming a whole system to "soften" a loss when a map offering and swf is in play seems like a waste of dev effort better spent elsewhere.

As for you personally considering it a loss or not… that's up to you.

  • Given that the winners are going to be given out for free in a rift at some point, I strongly doubt it.

  • I must be seeing things, but our rendition looks like Elon Musk to me.

  • I'd say that it's what makes Unknown unique compared to the other ranged killers. That said, I wouldn't necessarily be against a direct hit refreshing the Weakened duration.

  • You can still do the other challenges once you claim the "epilogue" nodes, if that's what you mean. For as long as the current rift's active, the current tome's challenges will reward fragments. How far you are in the tome doesn't matter.

The epilogue nodes are what allows you to claim the page's rewards, and allows you to progress onto the next page, if available.

  • I think the mods’ hands are tied on this.

There’s a forum rule about not allowing politics in the discussions, and the whole issue with FNaF is political. Like, actually political.

It doesn’t really matter if players capitalize on Myers’ iridescent add-ons; what’s relevant is that these extremely powerful tools exist. They define his full capacity for strength and don’t even require much skill to use. So yes we should heavily consider them when discussing his strength because they matter in that regard. Other killers have strong add-ons as well but Myers’ are the strongest in the game by a longshot.

As for whatever you’re implying about MMR, I don’t know what his stats are when he’s facing 4% of the player base (and neither do you for that matter), but he performs well it seems at every other level as he does not have the lowest kill rate in this game. In fact IIRC, he isn’t even among the bottom 5 killers with the lowest kill rates. He actually beats out quite a few killers who have better kits. So for whatever reason he’s able to hold his own as a solid, mid-tier killer.

I understand killers being p2w but the strongest killers (add-ons notwithstanding) are in fact free, and all perks eventually end up available through in-game currency anyway.

I don’t really care about that though. I just had to pushback against this weird perception that Myers is weak. He’s not.

Firstly, I must say we’re taking what I thought was a simple birdpost very seriously.

Second, I can’t justify calling Myers strong when his “full capacity” is limited to an add-on. And is unique to said add-on. That just doesn’t make sense to me.
Tombstone/Piece Myers may as well be considered a whole killer of his own with the sheer jump in strength it gives him, yes. But that also means that, without it, he’s nowhere near that same strength.

When talking about Huntress’ strength, we don’t assume she’s running Iri Heads. When talking about Clown, we don’t assume he’s running Pinky Finger. Why, then, does the discussion about Myers assume he’s running Tombstone/Piece?

As for the “better opponents” thing, I can obviously only speak of my own experience. Nevertheless, I’ve found that Tombstone Myers (by which I mean double iri’s specifically) gets really inconsistent once he starts facing opponents that know how to deny stalk as long as possible. That’s not even a “high MMR” thing. Lord knows I’m not “high MMR”. Or maybe I am, who knows.

Tombstone PIECE Myers is entirely too strong, that we all know. But it’s only with that add-on that Myers gets stupidly strong. Again, without it, Myers doesn’t come close to the same strength. So then it’s the add-on that’s winning the game, and thus P2W. Not so much Myers himself. On that I think we are in agreement. But, like I said, I just can’t justify calling Myers strong when that requires him running very specific, very unique add-ons.

  • Oh thank god.

Still wish they were greyed out like before though.

Myers isn’t weak, he can bypass all hook states to insta-kill survivors. As long as that true calling him weak is super disingenuous. Pig is a lot better after her buffs. Not S-tier, but not weak. Krueger is weak imo but apparently he does well at low MMR.

You say this as if all Myers are running Tombstone/Piece. I don’t think using two of the most unique add-ons in the entire game as a measure of Myers’ strength is entirely fair either.
If you use that as a standard, you gotta consider all other killers using their strongest add-ons as well. I was not.
Besides, Tombstone Myers falls off hard once you actually start facing better opponents. Tombstone piece is just bs, we all know this. Again, using 1 add-on as a standard of Myers’ strength actually seems disingenuous to me.

P2W implies that it’s signficantly easier to win using x obtained by real money, opposed to y available at base. Speaking solely of the killers themselves, that’s impossible in DbD, since Nurse comes with the base game. You’re not gonna win harder just because you’re playing Pig. That was the whole point.
There’s a different discussion when it comes to perks, but that wasn’t the point of my joke*

    TLDR; it ain’t that deep.

  • I thought we all kinda agreed Myers, Freddy and Pig were on the weak side.

  • Your chest bug report got closed. Because it was a duplicate. This is a wholly different topic, and bug.

Going by your very own list of discussions, you have never submitted a bug report regarding this specific issue. That means that either you simply never made one, or it got hidden. The latter only happens when a post is particularly inflammatory.

Either way, something doesn’t hold up.

There’s a lot of bug reports being made daily, easily filling two or even three pages sometimes. I’m also very certain that they have better knowledge of bugs being reported than any one of us.

On a holiday to Switzerland, was hoping to spot an Alpine Chough.

    Well :)

  • Léry’s is the oldest original realm with just 1 map. There’s potential, but it would need a lot of new assets for it not to feel like a copy of Treatment Theatre.

Swamp has a lot of unused assets I’d like to see one day.

As for Glenvale, I’d love to see Hellshire Penitentiary.

  • The difficulty indicators are based near-enough exclusively on how difficult their powers are to play in general, not to master per se.

Trapper, well, sets down bear traps. Even a slight bit of intuition will tell you how those are going to work.

Hag, on the other hand, is a bit more abstract. She sets down triangles, which shoot out a clone of herself when approached by survivors. Hags need to know the trigger range of the traps, that she can teleport to triggered traps, that crouching doesn’t trigger them, that the teleportation is limited in range, etc..

Again, Trapper is just… collect bear trap, set down bear trap, herd survivor into bear trap. Bosh.

Seeing how popular this mode is, it would be one of the dumbest business decisions of all time to not make this mode permanent. The game is breaking records on steam.

I’d hazard a guess to say that the playercount skyrocketed partially because of it being time-limited.

Likewise, keeping it forever will mean the novelty will wear off sooner than later. Killer queue times might go even higher than they already are.

  • It was never intended to stay forever. They were quite clear about this in just about all their communication regarding the mode.

  • Increasing the amount of available killers won't reduce just how popular Huntress is.

  • So! It's been a hot while!

Like I wrote before, I've been very busy these last few months, but now I should have a bit more time on my hands!

    Without further ado (a-coo?)

    The Passenger Pigeon

Even though the person who requested it deleted their account a while back, this one was requested by Simfeliz. I hope they still somehow find their way to this.

(PREFACE: the Passenger Pigeon is not to be confused with the Carrier Pigeon. The former is a species on its own, the latter a selectively bred "fancy pigeon")

The story of the passenger pigeon is, like too many other birds, similar to that of the Dodo.

I remember, in my uni time, when I had to do a presentation on an older work of American literature. This was for the same course that I got the summer essay for that I mentioned in my first bird talk. Now, I studied British literature. American literature wasn't exactly within my interests, and you may recall that I was kinda in the pits regarding Uni anyway. My motivation to do this presentation was… nihil. I had barely prepared. I knew the rough topics (colonialism bad, who'dve thunk?), but afterwards I realised I had even read the wrong section. To my surprise (especially in hindsight), we managed… fine. With the knowledge of the topics discussed in class, I was able to get through it remarkably well, all things considered. It wasn't stellar by any means, but that aside.

By now, I couldn't tell you what work the presentation was on, but during the presentation, my partner brought up a species of pigeon. I hadn't encountered any birds in what I read, so I was thrown off slightly, perhaps visibly so. However, I had already done my part, so I could lean back and let her carry on. And as she did, she mentioned that this species was had been hunted en masse since the arrival of the Europeans. They were plentiful, and so made for a cheap and easy source of meat. Granted, the Native Americans did hunt them as well, but, as with most things, the Europeans industrialised it. She ended our presentation on a note that, because of the actions of humans, the population of this species of pigeon had been reduced immensely, at an unfathomably quick pace.

It's now that I realise what species this was. The passenger pigeon.

The passenger pigeon was a slightly-smaller-than average pigeon species, thought to have been just a bit smaller than your typical rock pigeons. A charming species, with its rosy throat, grey head and brown back. And of course, the reddish eyes typical for some New World pigeons (specifically parts of the Patagioenas genus, if that means anything to you). It was also a comparatively fast pigeon, able to reach 100km/h (62mph). Nevertheless, the passenger pigeon was a remarkably "average" pigeon.

What was not average about them, was just how many there were of them. Although it's hard to say for certain, ornithologists (that's the study of birds) believe that the passenger pigeon, in its heyday in the early 1800's, boasted a population of at least 3 billion birds.

By the 1900's, they were completely extinct in the wild.

In less than a hundred years, the passenger pigeon had gone from possibly the single most numerous bird in the Americas, possibly the whole world, to nonexistence.

    image.png

The very last passenger pigeon, named Martha, was found dead in Cincinnati Zoo on September 1st, 1914. (Depicted → is Martha, displayed in the National Museum of Natural History, in 2014. Not sure if she's still there.)

For comparison, the common house sparrow, one of the single most common and widespread birds found today, has an estimated population of 1,6 billion right now. Imagine house sparrows being twice as common, localised to a single continent.

But! While overhunting, loss of habitat and all the usual suspects were inarguably the main factors that lead to its extinction, the passenger pigeon had another spot of bother: the very fact that it was so numerous. This particular species was prone to explosive population swings, mostly thanks to its versatility and well-above-average speed for a pigeon allowing it to travel practically anywhere and thrive. Even so, 3 billion birds of a single species was extraordinary. In recorded history, the only species to ever surpass that number is the domesticated chicken.

There's an obvious issue when you're with that many, living in roughly the same area. You all gotta share the same food. While the passenger pigeon, as the name might already suggest, was a migratory species, you may also know that birds migrate in flocks. With 3 billion individuals, spread across a single continent, that meant massive flocks of passenger pigeons would travel to the same spot, all competing for the same sources of food. And that's just the pigeons themselves. There's other species to compete with, and that's not even including the humans, even before the Europeans arrived. It wouldn't take much for there to not be enough food for all. And if there's not enough food to go around, populations dwindle. According to Hung et al. the average population of the passenger pigeon across the centuries was around 330.000 birds. All that to say, a steep decline in total number of passenger pigeons was inevitable.

However, as with all natural cycles, the population's decline would eventually have plateaud and stabilised. Obviously, there's no way of knowing when that would've happened, but as far as I can tell, the species would have survived.

    Alas.

While it by no means met with a unique fate, the passenger pigeon's story did do something else.

Its story roused public interest in the plight of birds, and wildlife in general in the modern age. As the public learned about the unjustifiable, entirely preventable demise of the passenger pigeon, interest in the preservation of our planet's precious species grew. With the death of the species, life was blown into conservation efforts. Laws were created that have allowed many species to survive today.

None of it would save the passenger pigeon, of course, but it would appear that, perhaps somewhere, we _are_ able to learn from our mistakes.

  • It’s been Huntress back-to-back for me.

  • Jailer is very good at flushing survivors out and keeping them occupied, but otherwise requires your assistance to actually get hits. Assassin is way more likely to get hits, but only really flourishes when dropped on top of a far away survivor.

They both excell in different ways, I think. Holding the three of them to the same standard is obviously going to result in one guard excelling while the others fall flat.

That sounds more like a Haddonfield/Coldwind issue than a Singularity issue.

  • Well, for one, that Dwight could be reported, since it artificially extended the game.

As for a solution, having an AFK killer/survivor lose collision would solve or at least somewhat alleviate body-blocking scenarios.

  • I believe it only works on other survivors.

  • I'm not sure how the themes of Alien could have been translated into DbD.

  • If you mean the “easy”, “hard” “very hard”, etc., that is how hard the devs estimate the killer is to play when you’re new to them. It’s essentially there to give you an idea of how easy/difficult it’s going to be to understand the killer.

It’s not necessarily about how hard it is to master them.
