Many of those newer tiles were designed with the fun of M1 chase in mind, why? Because the previous iteration was too strong for them; it required you to be M2 or have some kind of strong Chase Power that turned them into 50/50s or forced a mistake. Half the Killers in the Roster do not have a strong Chase Power.

To be fair, my friend, most of the older killers can handle the older tiles just fine. Most maps were overnerfed.

  • I agree, friend. DBD maps should be darker, especially these two realms.

As others have said, Boons are a failed concept. And I am honestly happy that we dont have any more Boons as long as BHVR is not willing to make Boons actually good. And as long as they dont meaningful improve the current Boons, I also dont want new Boons which are just bad as well. And BHVR clearly does not want to make good Boons after they nerfed CoH into the ground.

IMO the version of CoH before the most recent Nerf was fine. I would say it was a bit too weak already and running around doing Boons was already hurting the team, but it was better than what we have now. (I mean the version which increased healing speed by 50% and let you self-heal with a 50% penalty)

The only thing which Boons needed as a Nerf (on top of Circle of Healing being the version I mentioned) was that they only work horizontally and not vertically. Because Boons being on top floors just double their range basically and it is against the core principle of Boons - that the Killer can snuff it out quickly. If they have to go into one direction to go to some Stairs to then walk some more to snuff out the Boon while the Survivor benefits from it on a different Floor, this is wrong. But this was the only thing which should have been changed.

All Boons across the board need Buffs. And if BHVR wants to do that, they can think about implementing new Boons. But until then, every Boon-Perk is just a wasted Perk Slot or a wasted Perk on a new character.

Well said, my friend, I agree completely.

i mean yeah, it's separate balancing ruleset, but taking in mind that survivors receive max amount for perks and addons bans against Ghostface (general + tier 5 killer balancing) and Ghostface still can't basically do much at all pretty much tells everything about his actual state. Imagine if he truly was matched with good squads with full meta loadouts.

pretty much tells everything about his actual state

I don't think that is the case, tbh.

Because the scenario this Ghostface in particular is going against won't be seen by the vast majority of players in DBD, and those are the scenarios people will actually play. And, as we know, Ghostface players out there are not losing every single one of their games.

Comp DBD is external, made for entertainment, and is completely irrelevant when it comes to balancing the game.

You speak a lot of wisdom, my fine Nightmare-Maining Friend. :) I wish more people would stop using these "but Good Survivors" and "But comp DBD" arguments. They quite simply do not, never have and never will apply to the average round of DBD. The same goes for tierlists. Nobody actually needs a tierlist to know how "good" a Killer is because all Killers are fine and can hold their own in an average lobby. They're designed for that in mind, so the average person wins some and loses some.

It is long past time to put away the myth that some Killers are "just bad" because they got powercrept. There is no such thing as a truly Bad or Weak Killer, except maybe Skull Merchant. Nobody likes Skull Merchant.

So do you, Dredge-friend! Thank you for your kindness!

  • @squbax said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3935348#Comment_3935348

While yes comp is a very niche scenario my point is, you can be the best ghostface in the world, a good looper can still destroy you. Like you can expose them and down them 1 time, if they are good players it wont work twice.

And yes every killer can 4k that does not mean bhvr should make killers the likes of trapper and gf who are a joke against any decent player. As much as people dont like it dbds community is hella competitive and making the game competitive has manage to keep it alive, all the casual competitors have crumbled because well they refuse to accept the once casual game for friends got competitive.

Easy example many people have mentioned: skull merchant, she was a thematic killer with a different type of gameplay, so according to so many people in this thread she would be marvelous for the game.

I do not think I have to explain how tools of torment is one if not the worst chapter ever released, and I have played since like a week after the game released.

She was uninteractive, boring to face, had a boring counterplay and the pace of the match was horrible with her. Same as knight, time and time again the community has voiced how these killers are good for like 20 people who play them but they absolutelly ruin the experience for everyone.

So these alternative killers are known to fail, and stealth killers are a joke if you have more than 300 hours, so why would bhvr choose to sabotage their biggest chapter by making the killer these type of archetype?

But that applies to every single killer in the game, except Nurse. You can be a good player and still lose, it is natural, no one will win every single match they play.

However, that doesn't mean they will lose every single time, either. I wouldn't go as far as to call it a competitive community, more of a "play a casual horror game but don't like to lose". I think that is a better fit. Because it is true, some people out there try optimizing their playstyles because they don't like to lose, it happens. But they do, because DBD is much more than individual skill, there are always more factors at play.

Yes, Skull Merchant as she was on her release was not good for game, no one will deny that. But she is not the only unique killer we've had. Original Freddy was perfect, and he would have stayed that way had BHVR not nerfed him after a week, a decision even Cote himself said on an interview that they shouldn't have done. But he is proof that an alternative killer can work, it just has to be done properly. Knight, the other one you've mentioned, may be disliked, but he doesn't cause any real issues for the game. He is simply not for everyone.

Having an unique killer is far better than another repeat of a generic anti-loop or, the worst possible case, yet another dash killer, when we have enough of those already. The only reason Springtrap has a recycled power is because it takes less time and game knowledge to get the hang of, which fits a chapter that is meant to attract a lot of new players to the game.

  • @squbax said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3935034#Comment_3935034

Put the best ghostface in the world against a comp team, even the most chopped one and the ghostface will be destroyed if they are not playing on Lerys. Certain killers depend on your opponent being bad at the game, thats just how they are designed.

I am not sure I would mention such scenario as an example of strength / weakness of a killer because comp is completely irrelevant when it comes to balancing.

It is external, not experienced by the majority of players and filled with restrictions that a regular game doesn't have. It is made for entertainment, not something that players are seeing on their own games daily. It is useless for these kinds of discussions.

Against the average team, Ghostface can hold his own. Every killer can. Any us can think about our own games throughout the years: I guarantee all of us here have seen every killer get a 4k at some point.

  • @LockerLurk said:

Because of the demonstrable lie that all stealth Killers are always weak and that stealth itself is weak. It's not, and they are not. They simply take a lot more time, energy, skill, and effort at the game to become good with than someone more simple to learn like a mobility or speed Killer does. This chapter will draw many new players and BHVR doesn't want this big massive chapter that has been the most asked for Killer for YEARS to be too hard for people to use or get the hang of. A stealth Killer requires much more macro knowledge and setup understanding, tactical thinking, and game sense to win consistently with.

Well said, my friend, I agree completely.

  • Probably because stealth killers take more time and skill than most of the others to learn, but a chapter that is meant to attract a lot of new players needs to have a killer that is easier to get the hang of.

Though, thematically he would be much better as a stealth killer.

Hello General! I compared these 2 because they both have the "invisibility power", but the way they play is/were very different, just like the other ones (for example, hag and trapper put traps on the ground, but the way they work is very different, just like freddy/wraith, etc)

    Good to see you 👋

Good to see you too, my friend! I hope you're doing well.

I see your point, the invisibility is something they both have, but honestly they were so fundamentally different that the similarity is barely there. Really thinking about it, I don't think it is easy to compare Old Freddy to anyone, he was that unique.

And I sure loved him <3

  • @UndeddJester said:

I will admit, the axe was a weird choice to me... I don’t recall it ever being in any of the games... admittedly I haven't seen them all, as I hate the series from FNAF3 onwards and watching them was painful so I never made it all the way through... but I've never seen anything in the official content about an axe... apparently it's a fairly widely known fan made thing?

However, regarding the axe, it could have been literally anything... could have detached and threw his hand even... which would also make sense for the killer instinct nearby, since it'd be a part of Springtrap, and would obviously make the grab far more sensible since it's 2 parts of Springtrap working together.. rather than a random seemingly enchanted axe.

Course it'd still be the same gameplay loop as Huntress... but at least the comparison wouldn't be quite so glaring...

    Precisely, my friend.

  • Og Freddy -> wraith

To be fair, my friend, this isn't a comparison I would make.

The only similarity between them was invisibility and, even then, it was different because with Wraith you can see his silhouette. Freddy you couldn't see him at all.

Everything else is different, their very gameplay was fundamentally different. In fact, playing Old Freddy the same way people would play Wraith back then wouldn't work, you were likely to lose the match if you did so.

  • You would have liked him, I'm sure!

I know I did. Never really understood why they reworked him, the original concept could have been buffed without massive changes.

    @JawsIsTheNextKiller said:

Unfortunately popular streamers love gun and dash killers and I think that is the cause of the current lack of variety.

I'd love them to rework Freddy and give him a modern take on his v1 version. It was unique and fit his character carefully.

Revert Skull merchant to v2.0. Survivors are going to DC no matter what you do with Skull Merchant so mayas well give her fans the character they enjoy.

Springtrap I was hoping for a jumpscare killer like the soon to be gone Scratched Mirror Myers set in an indoor map.

It just aggravates me because I know the devs are capable of more, but they just don't want to try anything new nowadays. Whether because of community push-back or potential bugs/glitches, I don't know. Are we ever going to get a killer that flies, or climbs on walls, or inhabits their own area of the map (like the Halloween event), or who disguises themselves as a survivor, or applies buffs/debuffs, or just something that actually pushes the envelope a little? I know all those concepts may not be the strongest, but I feel like strength should almost always come secondary to fun/creativity.

I feel like strength should almost always come secondary to fun/creativity.

    I certainly agree, friend!

That's true regarding Freddy, but even then I don't feel like they did anything too groundbreaking with him (i wasnt around for his original iteration though). He has a ranged attack, he can mess with pallets (which Doctor can also do with his illusions), and his dream world is probably comparable to Dredge's Nightfall in terms of simply altering the environment. But they made it uniquely Freddy. My only exposure to FNAF is through my kids, but from what I've seen there's nothing about Springtrap that is particularly unique. He traverses the Pizzaria and survival depends on being observant.

Well, my friend, Freddy will likely remain a mystery when it comes to why he has not reverted to his original iteration when it could have been easily fixed without changing his identity.

Springtrap, meanwhile, will probably get stuck with his wasted potential, because it could have been so much better.

Yes, a killer needs to be viable to be fun for many of the people playing the game. I think a big chunk of this has to do with DBD's lean towards a competitive nature as well as people being really sore winners in this game. Saying its fun "if you get past the competitive aspect" is ignoring the whole reason why many people do not like playing non viable killers.

Also Doctor is not one who I would cite as having a fun power. I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone load in excited to face a doctor, and I always dreaded matching up with him because he is especially oppressive against newer players, which makes it really hard to encourage your friends when they're new to the game, while at the same time being somewhat toothless against a competent team. You cite Myers as being fun but I don't think he's representative. There are tons of other unique killers they've added that people hate going against. Pinhead, twins, hag, trapper, skull merchant, knight. Playstyles that cut against the grain of an engaging chase based match just aren't as well received. They're frustrating, and some have been perceived as downright cheap or unfair from people playing against them (such as SM and Knight).

I don't mind if they keep adding killers with a relatively similar formula because it works. Most of these killers are fun to play as and against. And the pick rates and complaints that people do (or do not) make against the killers is sufficient reason to believe that continuing on that path is the right choice imo.

To be honest, friend, I really liked playing against the original Doctor.

I think he was fun, greatly contributed to the horror atmosphere (who remembers his face appearing in the middle of the screen), and I really liked getting the hang of playing against his two different modes.

I think the Old Doctor, with things such as shock / mode switching timing and madness build-up had a lot of depth to him.

But sadly, that isn't the case anymore.

Omg GeneralV, happy to see you too! Doing great!

You reminded me how interesting killer powers were back in 2016-2017. There was never a matter of them being "meta", they just had very interesting unique designs. Killers like doctor (who nowadays would've been made to instead of madness just injure by building up electricity or something like that, plus a teleport to hallucinatios) or old Freddy, who despite being bad, was still incredibly unique.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3933665#Comment_3933665

That's part of my point. Do new killers NEED to be viable to be fun? Myers is bottom tier yet he is one of the most fun killers because of how many play styles he gets; if you get past the competitive aspect, he has a very fun power. Doctor has no mobility, but a power that is very interesting and oppressive, to the point he is viable without a teleport.

What I'm saying is, they could go a route with a killer where they're completely unique, not necessarily viable, but instead bring a breath of fresh air.

Glad to see you're doing great, my friend!

And well said on the designs. Ya know, because of the FNAF PTB today I was thinking about the killer roster I saw when I first played DBD, which was December of 2018: all killers were unique. No one had a recycled power. And, better yet, all of them except Legion had fun designs.

Killer design was just better in the past.

or old Freddy, who despite being bad, was still incredibly unique.

Wish this favorite killer of mine had returned, friend. I would have so much to talk about, so much to share. Almost 6 years since the rework, but he'll always remain my favorite.

  • Pukenplag!

It is good to see you again, dear friend! How are you doing?

I must say I agree completely here. Personally, I liked the doors and the security office, but the recycled Huntress aspect is so underwhelming and disappointing.

It is the same problem that has been plaguing Freddy since his rework in 2019: not having a unique power.

  • @MechWarrior3 said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3934053#Comment_3934053

I don't think there were limitations. For example. Skull Merchants Drones. The Scan Lines were a new design created. They rolled over to the same lines Alien's Flame Turrets use.

Fair enough, friend, that is a good point.

  • Yeah, that is basically what happened to Freddy when he first released, back in 2017.

A couple years ago I actually took the time to read the complaints about Freddy from back then, and the things you'd read if you do this… that was genuinely one of the worst DBD-related experiences I've ever had and probably one of the worst DBD-related experiences I'll ever have.

So yes, I agree, friend. There needs to be a least a little bit of time so that people can get used to the killer, then you can adjust them if needed.

Well said, General! Honestly, this one of the biggest issues pushing me away from DbD right now. I'm just not excited for any new killer because I know Behavior is not going to innovate or try to design a creative power at all.

Thank you, my dear friend! I know the chapter isn't even out yet, but I think this discussion is truly important, for more than just FNAF.

And yes, I can understand how demotivating it is. I took another break from DBD since January precisely because of how disappointing Freddy's changes were, and this very aspect of sticking to a recycled power instead of giving him his unique, original power back was the primary reason.

I was excited for FNAF, but now I am not sure if I will get the chapter. Probably not, considering I don't like ranged killers.

  • Honestly, I prefer licensed content if it is treated right.

For instance, my favorite chapter in DBD is the A Nightmare on Elm Street chapter. Take its original version and it is amazing. Look at it now, and you see it didn't receive the care it should have.

  • Become part of the lore, like my goat Vigo.

  • @Caiman said:

His axe isn't really that similar to Huntress's though. It had a much different throwing arc and range, it has a cooldown instead of a reload so he can't zone survivors as easily, it allows his unique insta-grab, he uses it to disable the cameras and doors for macroplay, and it has add-ons that turn it into more of a utility tool than a projectile weapon.

I think he's fine because he plays differently, even if it is superficially similar.

While I do agree that there are some different details, I personally do not think Springtrap should have received a recycled power. If at all, then stealth, because it is different enough across each killer who has it to be truly unique.

Thank you, my friend, ya know I agree completely.

This matter of Freddy in particular will always be extremely important to me. And I'll never understand why BHVR insists on never bringing back the most unique power they have ever designed when it is very easy to fix, or why the concept of not alienating players who enjoy the original iteration of a character doesn't apply to Freddy players in particular.

  • @Reinami said:

I know you commented on another post i made about this, but all i can say is.

Told ya. Same thing with freddy, same thing with sadako, anytime we get something truly interesting or unique, it gets complained about until it is nerfed, nerfed again, gutted, and then reworked to basically be the sameish boring killer power that we already have.

And when i say "nerf" i don't even mean its OP. Its just that for some reason people just don't want to actually interact with these unique powers.

    You called it, my friend.

    You called it.

Same thing happened with Freddy. With both of his reworks, lmao

Behavior doesn't seem interested in creating new concepts or trying to innovate their designs in any way, they're now content to just keep rehashing the same ideas over and over because they know that most of the playbase eats it up.

    Exactly!

    I don't understand either and I don't think I ever will.

  • Half of it is really cool, imo, I like the doors and the concept of the security office.

"DBD is not made for fast-paced trials" The game itself is LITERALLY a time-trial. The longer the game goes on, the higher chance a killer has of winning. Just because you want more time in each match to do stuff doesn't mean that the game isn't made for fast-paced trials. Playing quick and efficiently is the best way for survivors and killers both to win. Lots of people play this game to win, because they enjoy winning. Don't mix your preferred playstyle with "the game is not made for being fast-paced"

To be fair, friend, that is not exactly the case.

In fact, an extremely quick match isn't a guarantee of victory nor, overall, what the game is designed for. Hence the sheer difference in points between a quick match and a longer match. Or the many perks we have that take time within a match to activate, such as a Devour Hope.

Yes, some people play the game to win, which they can do even after some time has passed. And in fact, that is where the gameplay actually shines. DBD isn't made for fast-paced gameplay, it is designed for longer trials.

  • Time, I'd say.

Generally speaking, DBD is not made for fast-paced trials. Players, myself included, prefer to have enough time to fully enjoy the match.

As "genrushing" defeats the whole point of this. Honestly one of the reasons why I still think the original Hex: Ruin was one of the best perks in the game's history: because it slowed the game down… just a little bit.

  • @Reinami said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3933060#Comment_3933060

It probably won't be that, but then it will get complained about and turned into that a year from now.

Unfortunately, my friend, this is a very real possibility.

The more unique killers are more vulnerable to unnecessary complaints, such as Sadako and Freddy.

  • Anything but a dash or ranged attack, we have more than enough of those.

  • Right now, I think my biggest frustration when playing killer is having no one to play.

You see, I just got back to the game recently. And the reason why I had left for a few months is the very source of this problem: the Freddy changes earlier this year. After over five years missing my favorite killer, insisting on his return whenever I could, coming up with concepts and possible ways to have him back… getting my hopes up then immediately shattered was devastating.

Part of it is my fault, of course, for getting my hopes up in the first place. But I couldn't help it. The Old Freddy was, by FAR, my favorite character in DBD. He was perfect to me in a way that no other character is. He was everything. He is the reason I fell in love with DBD.

And now, I'm lost when it comes to playing killer. The Knight was fun for a while, granted, but ultimately he is not who I want to play. I'm looking forward to Springtrap, but he isn't going to replace Freddy. No one can.

Will I go back to playing Freddy eventually? Yes, I know I will. I truly love him to death. But, until then, no killer experience for me.

  • I still wanna see the Freddy + Dredge combo.

    Nightfall in the Dream World.

  • Honestly, the M1 killers are my favorite. Ever since I first started playing DBD, all the way back in 2018, Freddy has been my main, and he was pure M1 (technically he can injure people with an M2 now, but the latest changes don't really count in my response here, because I haven't played him since the PTB), and these are the kind of killer I enjoy playing.

I don't like M2 attacks like Nemesis or Xeno, and I particularly dislike dash killers like Blight or Wesker.

As for generator control, I think that was the main advantage of playing Freddy back in the day, as through him you could really learn how to control the map, which generators to check and, especially, when to drop chase. As for loops, I like them. It is the DBD gameplay I'm used to, so it doesn't bother me.

Way better than watching someone hold W and pre-drop everything. Loops are fun.

I have a sick suspicion that because he only posted Killer-sided takes, he may have been targeted by people who dislike that. The same occurs for the downvote system. It's why it needs to go, it doesn't promote discussion, it only promotes trolling and targeted harassment.

Daniel did not deserve the ban, he did not post anything problematic, he did not harass anyone, and he did not post anything that was an issue to anyone. He just happened to post EXTREMELY Killer-sided takes that while tone deaf were harmless. I have seen this with countless other people here too - always Killer-sided posters, never Survivor-sided ones.

If it's not direct favoritism or targeting, then something is off with the ban detection or people are getting false flagged. That needs addressing.

I strongly agree with this one.

The existence of a downvote system is exactly why I really dislike Reddit. It doesn't promote discussions, it replaces them in the worst way possible.

Just downvoting and moving on completely defeats the point of being on a platform meant for discussing and talking about things.

Only affects you which could be a challenge. New Moon at lease affected everyone but would be impossible to bring back now with these settings.

I'm fine with that. Don't mind the extra challenge if it means I can have more fun.

To be fair they just added it effectively basekit now 🎶

    Yep!

Just need to figure out the precise value to recreate the New Moon Bouquet's effect. If someone at BHVR can give me a hand here, I would appreciate it.

Who will not be turining brightness and gamma settings to max?

I'm thinking about making my game darker.

If they aren't adding the New Moon Bouquet back, I'll do it myself.

  • These color changes were genuinely awful, they really should be reverted.

  • Edit: I take it back what I previously said here, someone raised a point I had not considered and now I am not sure if these changes are actually good.

  • Genuinely no idea why this chage was made or why it has not been reverted, considering how universally despised it is.

A huge, huge, huge downgrade indeed. The only aspect of the Quests system that is better is the ability to complete multiple challenges at once. Everything else is blatantly worse.

Agreed. And personally, I would take the old Tome system and not being able to complete multiple challenges at once over this Quest system any day. Multiple challenges at once isn't even that great; I thought I wanted it, but after experiencing it, it just makes completing challenges feel less rewarding. They're chores, now.

Heck, they didn’t even keep the names “Ritual” and “Challenges”. What compelled them to do this is beyond my understanding.

Probably for the same reason they messed with the item/offering colors: to appeal to new players who may or may not stick around at the detriment to their long-time players, not caring that they're destroying the personality/identity DbD has established over the years.

But, hey, it's easier to mess with things that aren't broken which long-time players like rather than fix the issues that actually chase new players away.

    Well said, friend!

    Well said.
