But why? It was never stated or implied that David was gay.
did you have a problem with any other tome that expanded the lore of a character? Most of the story add something new about the characters, relationships, experiences, struggles, etc pp. Tome story’s are literally there for expanding the lore and fleshing out the characters.
Not every lore expansion in a story will have positive reviews.

No they would accuse them of pandering and not actually supporting it but being forced to do it. Creating a one dimensional character whose sole personality is their sexuality. It would be far worse than what we are seeing now with David - which outside of the tweet is a very well written and fitting lore.
We can't really know what bhvr's thought process was. I'm sure there are good intentions.

Then why focus on David being revealed as gay? And please don’t say it’s because of the tweet because they have made lore tweets and interactive lore quizzes on twitter for quite some time now - and those are way bigger and more prominent than David’s one tweet..
I still think it's just a weird thing for them to make an already existing character gay in cases.

Imagine the meltdown if they made a new free character that’s LGBTQ+….
At least people wouldn't feel as if they just played eenie minie moe and just wrote lore to justify it as they did now.

Eh. Just going out and accusing them of retconning his sexuality without any proof is far worse than just admitting you don’t know and it could be either way. In the end, it doesn’t matter. We have the official lore and only that matters in story telling.
also, I hope you were speaking up about Legions lore, iirc correctly there was actually retconning going on and it was shoving their heterosexuality down our throats. I don’t remember seeing many people saying they have a problem with retconning there. It seems like those people only ever have problems with it as soon as it’s LGBTQ+ related…
Being real man, I don't follow the lore anyways that nurse and wraith thing is something I ignored when I first seen it, thought it was more of a joke. And the legion stuff? Ehh, it's like unnecessary,

If they made a new character gay, that you needed to pay money for, that would be worse. They'd be accused of doing it for the money, and gating the only gay character behind a paywall.
It HAD to be one of the existing, free characters.
Also what? You have to fit a gay stereotype to be gay now?
Honestly i'd think more highly of them.jfnthey did so. Also, they could always do a taboo, "free content".

Sources or arguments for David being intended to be straight? Because… i didn’t see anything supporting this in his lore other than a briefly mentioned ex girlfriend which now makes even more sense on why she was only mentioned briefly.
actually the devs stated that at least one of their original characters was written with being LGBTQ+ in their mind - they didn’t reveal who they were talking about but it could have been David all along. It is fitting because of his relationship with his parents etc.
I'm just not gonna give bhvr that much credit. Benefit of the doubt? Sure.
I'm not against them having that thought before, but it'd be nice to get the play by play of that process.

his second tome is about him being gay/coming out and the struggles he has because of it. They didn’t rewrite his background story or first time and all his characteristics stay exactly the same.
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2930811#Comment_2930811
Luckily BHVR hasn’t done this, all they did was make a tiny tweet as a follow up to their announcement almost two years ago and that’s it. The community is blowing it up out of proportion.
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2930838#Comment_2930838
You have literally no knowledge about the lore, do you? Felix and Ace are the least fitting to be gay and it makes perfect sense for David as there is nothing contradictory in his lore. David was always the guy drinking to much and starting fights in bars etc. You having a head canon shouldn’t dictate how BHVR expands their lore.
Well technically speaking David was not perfect as he was more than likely written to just be straight before this point.

Whenever I see someone saying this "they just put the gay tag on David" thing, I'm wondering, what part of the next tome being about his struggle as a gay person didn't you understand?
Well, They had to do it make lore for it otherwise it would just be saying "David is gay".

Really? That's quite literally saying that only straight women like hot shirtless men. Not to mention it also feeds the stereotype that gay men can't be muscular or masculine.
And that is very wrong. In my entire DBD history (and it's been pretty long, since May 2016) I met hundreds of gay men and barely any straight women. This game has a big LGBT community, and a hot guy cosmetic is definitely not done just for the sake of women.
Okay, but that doesn't change the fact those cosmetics weren't made because he is gay. They were made because of his character before they even decided he'd be gay.

Ah yesss you care oh so much that you decided to do it in the most corporate way possible. Black backdrop with white text, the public announcement on twitter and the desperate fog whispers calling people bigots cause its being called out for what it is. Pandering. I'm gay and happily married to the most handsome man. And while the IDEA is appreciated its the intentions that drive that idea into the dirt. Could've been a nice surprise to find out during the tome event and have it be followed by word of mouth. Organic and subtle. Fix your game and stop pandering, I don't want it. I want a good and some what balanced game. No ill will but darn guys come on
Someone had to say it eventually

It depends how you're interpreting "not supporting".
Does it mean "I don't care either way, I don't actively support it"?
Or does it mean "I specifically am not in favour of it and do not support it"?
The latter is homophobic.
More of the first one.
I mean, just because your in favor or interested in something doesn't mean you support it. Also means you don't instantly not support it if you don't like it or not interested in it.
-
It in fact does not. Why would it be?

Not supporting the LGBT doesn't make you homophobic.

Why not? You’d almost certainly get value every game. There’s zero chance survivors would stop using second chance perks just because of NOED. Seems like a fair trade to me. You get extra lives early in exchange for losing lives later.
Just doesn't spark joy
-
Sure sure, but Apex is still cringe but ye

Having the perk solve reworked to solely rely on survivors using those perks is definitely not the way.

Probably because they decided to make it some great big spectacle. "LOOK OVER HERE WE HAVE A GAY CHARACTER LOOK THIS CHARACTERS GAY WOW LOOK HES GAY ISNT THAT COOL!" Esp them picking David it feels like a huge PR stunt. I mean it was assumed they'd make it this way when they made a huge deal about adding an LGBT character in the future but now its just the same thing. Feels more like a zoo who got a new animal than them wanting to make a character gay naturally

To me it doesn't matter if he was "intended" to be gay or not. Not every real life human knows they're gay right away, there's no reason to hold fictional characters to some arbitrary rule about their identity or personality never evolving. There's also been a lot of people suggesting that being gay is somehow out of character for David, which is just... homophobic lol. LGBT+ people can have any personality traits and look like anything because we are normal people.
Still always gonna be that thought in the back if the head.

Wow that was a quick reply! I know there's a whole lot you guys can't discuss so no worries on that. I was just hoping that more of the characters we've come to love over so many years haven't been hit with the retroactive heterosexualizing beam haha. But thank you for the reply! Either way I look forward to seeing what's planned.

Yeah I don't fully get the flak. There's nothing wrong with David having dated women before realizing he's gay. There's nothing wrong with saying an established character is gay/bi/trans, especially since there is nothing in the lore to have contradicted any of it. It's been integrated naturally with his character, and he is a notable, popular character who has been around a long time, so it still has meaning to people. My hope was that it just wouldn't stop there, or lead to accidentally restricting other LGBT+ interpretations of characters. But in terms of companies adding LGBT+ characters to their properties, and a history of it being done incredibly clumsily, I think BHVR has done alright.
One thing that is weird to me is, making an already established character gay when they were more than likely not intended to be gay. That's where I raise an eyebrow. It's not unheard of, neither good or bad, but still it has that factor.
-
Bhvr is gonna get flak no matter what. I think their getting more flak because of the way they done it.

Tome spoilers, he forces himself to date women because his mum and dad both force him to hide himself and it's his friend that helps him realise that no he is gay and to accept himself, basically.
Is that real deal what happened?

It makes sense if you remember that BHVR is a company, and a company thrives on publicity and good press.
Don't look to people who are, at the end of the day, trying to sell you something for moral affirmation.
It's hard for companies to win. Marketing or community? Maybe both? So many different ways to view this.

People have comfort characters, whether it’s for relatability, attraction, or both. There’s even an entire community I know of that put themselves in actual relationships with fictional characters, though that isn’t the case here.
For some people a character’s, in this case, sexuality, can determine if that character becomes a comfort one or not.
I presume OP has liked David since his release, and with nothing ever alluding to his sexuality except the ex-girlfriend thing, having that suddenly torn away after years can be psychologically hurtful to people.
This is why the ‘leave it to everyone’s own interpretation’ was a better idea, so no one could have their own ideas ruined about a character. Making the character canonically gay would, and has, ruined the connection, illusion, comfort, etc. for some people.
I’ve never personally cared about David but I know I’d be quite distraught if my comfort characters were suddenly canonically labeled as something, years down the line, that would break my connection.

First of all, there was already mentioned a girlfriend in his lore.
https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/ONNGZN7YRV95/image.png
And in simple words, I´m angry with rewriting the story of an existing character as they want, don't taking care of fans. Just imagine if your favorite survivor is Kate/Feng/Meg etc, and in the next tome suddenly it comes that she has a cock.
If they did pull the trans card on one of the survivors then I'd definitely say their forcing it then
-
@GentlemanFridge said:
Pray tell, how should they have done it, according to y’all?
Current situation = forced because “retcon”, despite it making perfect sense.
New character = accussations of tokenism, despite “this is only the beginning”.
Different character than David = exact same uproar we have now. Besides, who? “X gives me gay vibes” yeah no, that’s not how it works.
Unannounced = Impossible. People will scream it off the rooftops, including myself, the moment it happens because it’s a big thing.
”Shouldn’t have included sexuality, period” = Haha, way to ignore Nurse, Legion, Felix, etc, etc.
Who knows honestly, I do think it is a little weird though.
I don't totally think making an already established character gay just because is the best thing. Especially when David was probably not written to be gay originally.
-
Oni looking a little high ngl
-
This is the exact same thing as soldier is it not. I don't really see a difference
-
Never stopped the my hero academia community...
-
It is definitely weird
-
Definitely what I was thinking
-
It is pretty fine, but still has that "that's weird" factor.
-
I really don't think it goes any deeper than "David is gay".
-
All I'll say is, it can be weird for companies to make one of their characters gay just because. There is a certain "why?" factor when we know that more than likely David was never originally meant to be gay.
-
not at all. it's a fun perk to see in games.
