I too suffer from this, and I've spoken to my therapist (my dog) about possible coping mechanisms. Here's what we've come up with so far:
- Don't play solo queue
- If you think you're about to queue for solo survivor, click a different button.
- Invite friends to the lobby to solo queue with, that way you aren't playing solo queue. It's usually better to solo queue with 2 or 3 friends.
I am adopting a pair of cats soon that I plan to employ as my own therapist(s). Great minds think alike.
I have friends on the game but 99% of the time they are in full squads and it's hard for me to really even reach out in the first place because I worry I'll be rejected. And I find killer really anxiety-inducing for some reason.
I don't mind solo queue in short bursts. In some ways it's more relaxing because you don't have to worry about comms. But I seem to be addicted to playing whether I'm having a good time or not, and it's worrying how quickly the time passes playing something that you actually aren't getting any enjoyment out of.
Hoping the cats will help. I like cats.

That was engaging lol in all seriousness though, find something else to occupy your time. I play maybe 3 hours a week average now. Much less than I used to. You don't have to uninstall it. Just find more hobbies outside this game.
I think this is it - it's just that I haven't really touched a different hobby in a long time (definitely since COVID). And when you're starting out something new it's so much harder to stick with because, well, you're not very good at it.
I am trying to write a bit as a hobby, so the comment about it really engaging is really nice to see. Thank you

I agree with you about the gem issue. Survivors keep pulling out the Chaos Emerald and sending me into the Shadow Realm. It's making games borderline unplayable, to be honest.

Try reading the question again, they are not just asking if the killers actions are bannable, they are asking why it isnt. That's a very different question. The question itself is a leading one, implying that the actions should be bannable, which is why it triggers the "action → reaction" response.
Its similar to the bleeding-out (time dragging) debate: it’s fine when Team A does it unprovoked, but when Team B does the same, suddenly it’s an issue, and everyone thinks it should be bannable.
Fair enough. For the record survivors that hang about in the door to teabag when everyone is safe annoy me just as much, and I'm a survivor main.
If both sides could just learn to be nice to each other this game would be so much more wholesome and (probably) fun. Instead it has this tense atmosphere where both sides always hate each other and will BM/assume the worst of them no matter what.

How would you know if the survivor in question did not actually BM the killer in the first place, if we dont get to see the full video?
They shouldn't need to upload a full video just to ask whether the killer's actions are bannable. It's possible they did BM, but I can say for a fact I've had this happen to me numerous times (sometimes even the whole team) when I didn't BM at all (teabagging, clicking, whatever).
Killers don't need a survivor BMing as an excuse to do this. They can do it just because they can - they already know the survivor can't do a thing about it and there is no risk attached to doing it.

I said that because I never think that killers go into the game just doing that off rip. It’s normally something that the survivors do that make the killers BM.
I wish we played the same game. This happens to me or members of my team more often than it should with no provocation.
-

(accidentally double posted, sorry!)
-
I don't think it should be bannable (multitude of reasons, but the biggest I think is how intensive it would be to moderate reports coming in for this sort of thing, and proving that it is malicious on the killer's part) but there really, really needs to be a way for survivors to move on quicker when this happens. The game here is obviously over, so why do you need to sit on the floor for four minutes until the Nurse hooks you?
It's the same for killers being able to bodyblock survivors in corners - easiest and most obvious solution would be to remove collision when survivors get crows. Easy and fair. But nooooooooooope. Been suggested for years and it is never ever addressed. Situations like this are the same unfortunately. I wish the devs would do something to discourage this sort of behaviour or at the very least make it so the killer can't do this for so long before giving the survivor a way out.
And I'm aware this BM happens on both sides before anyone says anything, but killers have much more agency and control over it than survivors do. Killers can hit the survivors or force them out. Survivors have to just sit there and take it or face a DC penalty which is just stupid and encourages this behaviour further.
-
We need a spring cleaning event
-
lol I can play at this game. 95% of killers do the same thing. If I try to experiment with non-meta builds or meme I get tunnelled out or slugged on the floor. If I play 'fair' and try to make sure the killer's experience is a good one it is never returned.
I'm obviously exaggerating but you are too so it seems only natural that I do. I can tell you for a fact though this behaviour isn't exclusive to survivors by a long shot - being left to bleed out when the killer has won happens far more often than it should, and I deliberately don't BM because I know how frustrating and potentially hurtful it can be to face if you are a killer. Yet it happens anyway. Welcome to DBD where more often than not everyone hates each other.
Stop it with the 'us vs them' stuff or I'll have to bonk you.
-
I have a different but equally (if not more) valid set of criteria for killers that they need to meet to not go on 'the list':
- If you are playing Xenomorph, you must go into Crawler form and wait for me to throw my pebble before going to fetch it for me. Failure to return it will result in not being called a 'good boy'. Repeat for Demogorgon, Dracula in Wolf form and Chucky to an extent (he's too adorable, once you get over his swearing, for me to not consider him as a pet).
- If I start lifting up a pallet in front of you with Any Means Necessary, you must let me complete the lift and then drop the pallet on top of you again. This is because I find this funny.
- If you are the Pig, you must let me boop your nose. I will not be offering an explanation for this rule.
- If you are a Wesker, you must ensure that you infect me and allow me to pick up a Spray so that I can spam the animation over and over again in quick succession. This is because doing this tickles my funny bone.
- If mid-chase I run you to the cutouts at the Circus at Father Campbell's Chapel and crouch in on one of them, you must follow suit and pose with me. Failure to do this will make Maurice considerably upset, and you wouldn't want that on your conscience.
There are countless other rules but I seem to have misplaced the tome I wrote them all down in. I will have a look for it.
-
On a bad day: all of them.
On a good day: Spirits because I feel like they never let up and the vacuum cleaner phasing is basically a guessing game as to whether you go down or not. Get hit, phase, down. Rinse and repeat.
Doctors because I hate being interrupted mid-action and just standing there like an idiot
Trappers because they make me too paranoid to even touch a loop
Legion because mending is really fun and cool and I love doing it the whole match, especially when my teammates don't know that the worst thing to do against them is to huddle together like they're on a school trip
Wraiths because it's just hit and run and they in my experience BM a lot more often
The rest are tolerable. I might even have fun versing them (god forbid!)

Im not often playing survivor, mainly because I have very long queue times for surv, when i get home after work. But since I am on holiday this week I thought, I could try to play some more survivor and work on my skillset a bit. Since all my other buddies are either not playing anymore or have to work, I had to go in solo and Oh boiiii was ist an experience.
Almost every game is just the same thing:
- You get found by killer, you get chased by killer.
- You do pretty well in chase, cause you play a lot of killer and therefor know what is possible and how to run as survivor.
- Killer downs you, most of the time a couple of gens are done.
- Killer gets mad at you cause you screwed up their game. Had for example a Ghostface just stand in front of my hook, hitting me and teabagging me for like 30 seconds, anticamp almost kicked in
- I get unhooked, healed up, we do the last gen, while killer chases someone else for a short time
- Exit gates are powered
- Oh No Noed
- Other survivor goes down, I find the totem and break it, also unhook the survivor
- Killer chases us on way to exit gate, I block for other survivor, now killer goes for me
- I run killer during endgame collapse while my team heals up
- I get downed and I get hooked
- My team instaleaves while there is still 80% of the endgame collapse bar left.
- I get some cool message in chat when I point out, that I really find this unfair like: "We all have good games and then don't make it out", "Shouldnt have gotten downed during endgame collapse I guess" or "Well normally I would have gone for unhooking you, but like I decided not to tryhard anymore"
And then the same thing more or less happens the next game. So many survivors in Solo queue just instaleave as soon as the gates are powered and dont even try to teamplay, even though some games they literary get hardcarried by someone else.
Always so much more rewarding to run-in for a last second save and succeed, even if the chances are slim. You get such an adrenaline rush out of it.
I always do this, because I know how bad it feels to be left behind by your whole team like that (and it has happened to me, many many times). It would be nice for there to be more in-game incentives to do it too.
-
I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is one of the worst feelings in the world. They become your family, in a way.
Speaking from experience, I'd suggest you play something else for the time-being. This game is not the best to play when you are already going into it with a low mood, especially one compounded by grief.
Wish you the best.

Look at Iron Will, Reassurance, Totems, GenRush, Distortion, WLM, slows, blinds, stuns… I mean, how is that fair when survs has GenRush, Reassurance for anti-camp, OtC, and DS for anti-tunnel, WLM for anti-wounds, Iron Will to counter spirit and nurse, stuns and blinds to bully, while killers are still using Pain Reson, DeadLock and PGTW, which come from 100 years ago and get nerfed 100 times. I mean, surv's perk perfectly counter killer's and advanced in value and mechanics.
How is that even fair…
Well with the amount of perks added to the game of course there is going to be variety in what they offer and what counters they provide. This extends to killers as well as survivors. You are writing as though survivors have access to every single perk in the game, which they don't.
You lost me when you complained about stuns and blinds. You don't want survivors to try and pull off risky flashlight or pallet saves? Or try and last more than five seconds in a chase? This is not only boring but will incentivise genrushing more than ever.
Frustrated about DS and OTR? You can counter those very easily and make them redundant by not tunnelling. They're designed to be purely anti-tunnel perks, so if they're not good at countering tunnelling, they're useless. If a survivor has both of those perks and doesn't get tunnelled, they're down two perk slots, and if they're desperate enough to throw themselves at you to try and get value anyway, slug them. Simple. And you don't even need any perks yourself to do that.
There is a killer counter to every perk you've listed. Enduring and/or Spirit Fury. Aura reading. Exhaustion inflicting perks and/or addons (did you forget killers have addons?) Good game sense. I could go on and on. But you can't have access to all these counters at once, just as survivors don't have access to all the perks you've listed at once.
Step back and take a look at the bigger picture. Play some survivor.
-
Not really sure there is a way to 'stop' it. Killers could certainly use some better incentives to not do it though. Need more perks to be designed like Pop and Grim Embrace, where leaving the hook and targetting multiple survivors rewards you.
I think unless something drastic is added like a new gameplay mechanic to build off the game's foundation there's not much you can do. This game is very limited in terms of design in my eyes. How does the game detect that the killer is proxy camping and ensure it is genuine? How could it be balanced around killers that can return to the hook extremely quickly? What does it do if survivors are nearby? How could it actually punish the killer? These are all questions that need to be answered and I'm not sure the game is capable of addressing them well enough for there to be any point in adding a built in anti-proxy camp incentive as it is. You'd need an entirely new mechanic to address it, if that makes any sense.
EDIT: Just realised I completely avoided answering the question, which is what that mechanic would be lmao. I have no idea. It's a minefield of issues you'd have to address to make sure you get it right. Something like the cage moving mechanic as others have mentioned seems like the best 'solution', but it would need some heavy tweaking to ensure it doesn't give hooked survivors a free get out of jail card.
Eg: unlike cages, you know where the hooked survivor is. You see someone running in for the save and follow them. Instead of saving, they loop you around/near the hooked survivor. Hooked survivor is moved because game thinks you are proxy camping. You are still wasting time chasing the other survivor and the hooked survivor is almost guaranteed to be saved with no risk. Cages normally move no matter if a survivor is close by, so the mechanic needs to be adjusted somewhat given the above scenario.
-
That's really interesting, I've seen almost nothing BUT Dracula.
-
Deathslinger - roam the Wild West and drink it all in.
Laurie - I'm not sure, though I'd imagine I'd be pretty sad for a long time after losing all my friends and nearly my own life. I don't think it's really touched on after the first film but I'd be surprised if Laurie didn't develop some gnarly coping mechanisms to try and handle her trauma and the survivor's guilt she must have.
I think I'd try to forgive myself. Go into therapy. And then, when I feel ready, I'd sign up for a trauma hotline so that I could try and use the feelings I've carried from the horror I experienced to help others. It wouldn't be easy, though.
-
don't have the energy to weigh in on this properly, but the less camping this game has, the better. It's a boring strategy for both sides.
So I'm content with another change that not only improves the solo queue experience further (might actually not be left to hit second) but also makes it more punishing for killers to camp outright as they have to commit more time to it. I understand sometimes camping is the optimal play, but it shouldn't be the killer's first go-to.
Perhaps in niche scenarios reassurance could be strong due to this change - you could dip in for a second, reassure, then leave to do a gen and the hook stage is now even longer and the killer has to spend even more time for the camping to benefit them. I don't mind this though, if the perk is reliant on the killer camping to really get any value then it's already situational and not good in every game. Can't comment on camaraderie as I never see it, though imagine it's easier to get value out of as killers are more likely to camp someone out of the game than if they're on their first hook.
I think it's fine for the anti-camp to stay the same, it really only works with face-camping and won't impact 90% of the camping scenarios if the killer is aware of it.

Not really? Though I feel like Michaels tunnel me a lot when I'm playing Laurie, even though canonically she should be the only one left standing. They always get pebbled.

I was thinking about this with the event and how weaksauce the event was (which has since been amended thanks to BHVR listening to feedback). The event did seem really meh but with the BP Boost being added (and will only get better as the week goes on), I got way more excited about it.
Which then got me thinking...why?
I've been playing this game for a long time. Like..."somebody should probably check on him" long time. I haven't needed BP in forever as I have everyone leveled up to where they need to be to have the stuff you get from leveling up (so prestige stuff and bloodied clothing and charms). There's really no need for me to be excited for BP cause I don't need BP for anything...
And yet, my simple monkey lizard brain lights up with happy buzzing when I see the BP Numbers go Brrrrrrrrr. I'm not sure why. I'm sure it's some psychological thing about skinner boxes and rewards and whatnot but I love these kind of events and seeing just how high I can get that number to go.
Not really to be honest - since they made perks immediately accessable across new characters I don't really have a reason to spend them. Have all the survivors I play kitted out. I only spend them really because I don't want to go over the cap just in case.
Would probably be very different if I played killer as well though.

I versed a Spirit earlier and can tell you it isn't. Stuck out like a sore thumb when every other killer I'd versed could be leaning over my shoulder and I wouldn't know they were there. Her noises stopped me from running straight into her at the start of the game.
If it makes you feel any better, we still got absolutely annihilated by said Spirit.
-
Can't speak for the killer side but completely agree with the survivor side take. It's like every killer has Wraith's kit built in without needing to uncloak. You can't hear them and have no way of seeing them until it's too late. Killers know where to find you by patrolling gens and you're always going to be left vulnerable doing a gen. Even if there's a pallet right next to you you're likely to be hit, and if you get caught on a gen out in the open against someone like Bubba you're just immediately screwed. Add the fact healing is much more difficult and risky and you're pretty much one shot past your first hook for the rest of the game with little to no way of preventing getting hit.

You need to relight five BROKEN totems. It's very unlikely you get this to happen in a match unless you run I'd imagine Plaything and other hexes on top to incentivise survivors to break them. Even more unlikely that you can gradually build up to five over the course of the game as at least one survivor is going to know where the relit totem is each time. Best bet is to let all five be broken then run around and light them all up in one go, but this is easier said than done. That's why the effect is so busted.
To clarify:
Plaything - if triggered on all four survivors, four different hexes to cleanse
Another hex on top of that, like Ruin, brings it to five.
You can relight any totems that are destroyed to gain the effects listed on the perk. But these relit totems can also be cleansed again. After that, they're no longer usable. So to get to five stacks you'd likely need to light all five destroyed totems one after the other very quickly, before the survivors have time to react.
-
Always always always Diversion.
No killer in a million years expects you to run it and that's why it works so well. It's genuinely saved my life countless times and never fails to get a laugh out of me when the killer falls for it and spends ages checking a random corner of the map with no one in it.
Not to mention you can lob it at the killer's face. It's the ultimate BM tactic. About to get slugged for the third time by a Nurse? Pebble her. See Bubba facecamping? Pebble him. A tunnelling Xenomorph? Pebble it. You will always get the last laugh.
-
It can be a little offputting. I don't play the game anywhere near as much as I used to back in the day, and so I do get a little anxious that people are going to expect me to play better than I actually do. And with Laurie P100 (I have no idea if this is coincidence or not) there are a fair number of games where I seem to be targeted quite aggressively.
Sometimes I switch to Kate, Jill or Cheryl (all of whom I have much lower prestiges) to try and ease up on myself a bit. I think there is a little bit of bias towards P100s but it's not consistent enough to put me off Laurie entirely. I always come back.
-
Danny Devito as The Blight
-
It will always be Laurie for me.
I started out playing Jake but slowly gravitated towards Laurie. I think it was her backstory that really had me take a shine to her - the fact that a normal, everyday teenager around my age (I was 17-18 when I got into the game) could overcome evil and fight back was, I think subconsciously to me, quite inspiring. I watched the first couple of Halloweens not too long after and considered her my favourite since. She's a relatable, certified horror icon badass.
I still need to watch the two later reboots (Kills and Ends) but hopefully someday they add some skins for her! There's even an school outfit from the original film that they could add that I'd be very happy with.
I think it says a lot that despite her lack of cosmetics and the fact that other survivors from franchises I love have been added since (mainly RE) I keep coming back to her. She's the only survivor I have P100. Probably will be the only one.
Become a Laurie main! There are literally dozens (tens?) of us!

I'm sorry, it wasn't aimed at you. I genuinely just kinda released all my thoughts on the replies in this thread as a whole into that post. I apologize. The first paragraph was aimed at you, the last two were not.
As for the bullying thing, it wasn't meant to be a comparison. It was just meant to highlight that when people say "don't let it bother you" it's not helpful. I was also relentlessly bullied as an autistic person with ADHD. I know what it's like, and yeah it's nowhere close to toxicity in a video game.
It's okay! :) I understand that it can be frustrating. I hope your experience with the game fares better soon.

I've taken many breaks from this game, even one where I didn't play for a year. But the problem is that I love this game and I want to enjoy it. When I constantly meet insufferable players who has the mindset equivalent of a 12 year old's it's hard to enjoy the game.
I am aware that I can't control what other people do and can only change how I react, but in all honesty that still isn't helpful and in my opinion it's still a problem that BHVR doesn't do anything at all to combat toxicity. It's not as easy to just "turn off" your feelings.
I'm a broken record at this point, so I'll just agree to disagree with people who think "you shouldn't let it bother you" is helpful advice. That's what teachers say to victims of bullying, and that hasn't made the bullying any less traumatizing.
Not very nice to boil down the genuine advice I'm trying to give you as "you shouldn't let it bother you". You know full well I'm not just saying that.
Sure, the devs could do more to combat toxicity, but I don't think at this point there's any evidence that they will/are going to put a system in place for it, especially one that works.
So ultimately you can't control the people who kill your enjoyment for the game, you know they're still going to be there, so it becomes a situation where you determine what effect they have on your experience. I'm not saying it should be that way, but that's how it is. You don't want to keep throwing yourself at a brick wall in the hopes that eventually you'll smash through it. It's not worth it.
If you play DBD you're going to run into toxic players. It's inevitable. You need to decide whether or not it's worth still playing the game you enjoy even if you run the risk of having toxic games.
(And as someone who was heavily bullied growing up, that comparison isn't warranted. Bullying is a consistent, systematic form of harassment that interrupts your everyday school life and can mess you up growing up. Toxicity in a video game can be upsetting but it's very easy to remove yourself from that upsetting environment. Bullying can feel almost inescapable.)

@OneNineTwoNine said:
Let's first define toxicity, so that we're on the same page:
- Slugging a survivor and bleeding them out for 4 minutes, even when there are hooks nearby and no threat of sabo
- Camping and tunneling on purpose to be toxic, and throwing the game in the process, as long as the survivor dies (Camping and tunneling isn't always toxic, sometimes it's a strategy albeit a damaging one)
- T-bagging in the exit gate and or doing rushed actions to get the killers attention when they've lost
- Hitting on hook multiple times, and not just to stop the scream
- Being nasty in the end game chat
Any time a survivor or killer is seen doing these things, the general consensus is to "grow thicker skin" and "get over it" however, this is just not helpful. I find myself trying to ignore these things, but when they happen over and over, it is THE one thing that makes me want to Alt + F4. And I'm not the only one.
There are other games where this type of behavior is not allowed and where you can even be banned for it. Why is that not the case here? Why doesn't BHVR try to at least encourage people to be good sports and be kind to the people they face?
The killer you just demolished is a real person, with feelings. You don't have to rub it in. Neither do you need to rub it in when you tunnel one person out of the game at 5 gens and hit them on hook as they die, only to tell them "loop better" in the end game chat.
I know, I sound like I'm whining. And yeah, I am. It's because I just cannot understand why this has been going on for so long and still no attempt has been made to try to rectify the problem. Toxicity is a very detrimental thing to online games, but also mental health.
It keeps people who simply do not have the means to "have thick skin" from playing a game they bought and are trying to enjoy. I can personally say that the one thing burning me out of this game is not the sweaty "high MMR" players who 4k or escape every match, it's the toxic ones that go out of their way to ruin my gameplay experience.
It's not difficult to be a kind person. There is no excuse and it should be cracked down on.
I'll say first of all I sympathise with you and how you're feeling. I went through a particularly awful depressive episode a while back and tried to use this game as a way of comforting myself and it backfired enormously with the toxicity that was running rampant at the time. Something I've learnt through that is that this game is NOT one to play if you're feeling low or going through tough periods, unless maybe you're playing with friends. When you're playing and your own and it feels like some of the killers you're getting are just out to make you miserable (not saying this is necessarily true - but it can be easy to interpret it that way when you're feeling low) it just makes you feel worse, and the only way to stop it is to just stop playing.
This is what I did. I used to play the game at least every other day for a couple hours but then I didn't touch it for weeks. Didn't touch Cage. Had a tiny bit of interest in Alien but played maybe a couple games. And I played for a couple hours tonight. And I felt a lot better. Had a game where a Blight with Iri vial and Alchemist Ring went out of his way to slug everyone at five gens and normally it would have tilted me but I just didn't care. I died and moved on to the next game and they went considerably better.
I'm sharing that little anecdote to show that taking a break, as cliche as it is, may drastically help you in how you approach and feel about the game when you come back.
I'd also say that while there are obvious examples of toxicity (bleed out, beating on hook, teabagging, endgame chat) there are others that may be more accidental for lack of better phrasing. Example: in a game I had today I went back into the match to grab a flame turret to bring back to the gate to get extra BP. The killer was nowhere to be seen, but it took me a while to get the turret and bring it back to the door. While I was only doing it for the 1000BP, the killer may have thought I was waiting in the door and teabagging till I got run out. So I may have been seen as toxic, albeit accidentally. You could say the same about tunnelling. Maybe the killer just happens to find you three times in a row and can't afford to lose the pressure. Maybe they didn't know you were death hook. It's whatever.
And you're going to get killers and survivors that equally go out of their way to be obvious asshats just because they can. You can't stop them and the devs can't really either so the only thing you can change is how you respond to them. And, like I said, this is particularly difficult to do if you're already annoyed/upset at something else and are looking to DBD as a break from that.
I suggest taking a break and coming back to the game a while later. If it still bothers you the same way then, find another game to enjoy. We play games to have fun, not to make us sad, and I don't want to see you fall into the same depressive loop that I did for a time. Watching streamers play this game (I recommend a guy called Slate) is much more relaxing than playing the game yourself, I find.
Take care!

Diversion (I love the perk, but it is objectively bad) - The Pebble is now replaced with a Hand Grenade. The grenade has a 5/4/3 second fuse that activates once it is thrown. If it explodes close enough to the Killer, in addition to stunning them, it has a 30/50/100% chance to blow their limbs off. The Grenade will leave behind a Loud Noise Notification as normal once it detonates. It can also be used to destroy breakable walls!

Reminds me of Call of Duty now where to get one specific thing you want you have to buy a more expensive bundle that has a load of stuff in it (usually filler nonsense to jack up the price) that you don't want. You can buy the characters separately with cells but you're still getting ripped off compared to previous chapters. Ugh.

I've had the same happen to me, and I think it is related to trophy progress you have made on the PS4 version.
When I first logged in post-update I immediately got five or six trophies at once. Michael's trophies, Laurie's adept, doctor shocks etc. all trophies that I'd obtained on the PS4 version but hadn't gotten around to doing on the PS5 version.
Logged in again today and now I've gotten Freddy's trophy for putting people to sleep and the one for throwing hatchets. The progress on Skilled Huntress has more than doubled too, going for 21 to 46 and then 71 (I seem to recall having a small bit of progress on the trophy on the PS4 version but obviously couldn't track it) upon me having booted up the game twice.
I think what's happening is the game is retroactively applying the trophy progress you made on the PS4 version to the PS5 version, only it's doing this every single time you launch the game and is stacking. All of the trophies I have left are Skilled Huntress, one of the changed Stranger Things trophies and everything for Singularity and Nicholas Cage, whom I wouldn't have touched of course on the PS4 version.

Its always the same. Survivors get a perk thats used somehow situational, instantly its OP. Killer mains are so simple its already sad.
