@ByeByeQ BBQ being healthy or unhealthy was not my point of discussion. Being pigeonholed into perks was.

WoD was buffed more than a year ago and doubled in usage because the latest Meta Balance made other perks less mandatory. The same phenomenon happened to other information perks, see how Kindred jumped from 9% to 13% and Bond from 5% to almost 10%. Not only that, several common builds are using 2 information perks. Also, it's no surprise it's overused as SQ comprises the majority of the Player Base.

Now, ask yourself why 30% of the survivor player base needs to dedicate a perk slot to make sure they don't die due to the lack of coordination.

Or just keep doing what you're doing and dismiss SQ as sloppy and careless for using one information perk.

If a survivor knows that there is another pallet around the corner then they don't have to try to conserve the one they are currently at, do they?

How about you ask yourself why do people need it on all the time?

Windows of Opportunity wasn't touched in 6.1, it was last changed in 5.3. Unless you have specific stats from pre-5.3, 5.3 to 6.1, and post that, I don't think we can make a direct comparison.

That being said, I also have no specific stats on soloQs, newbs, and console players before 6.1 but survivors in general have seen a dip in escape rates across the board since then. And based on the seemingly consensus opinion here, its not coming from the comp team bully squads. So, by elimination, it has to be coming from somewhere which would be, assumedly, the lower-ceiling skilled players.

So, based on my 3 points, if we were to nerf Windows of Opportunity, those squads would be hit harder than the others. Experienced players would still know the pallet spawns, SWFs could still call out deadzones/broken set-ups, and PC players can increase their brightness to help spot pallets in general. All things other groups can't do to offset not getting as much value from the perk.

Sure, you can say its braindead easy and all and I may not even disagree with you. But these are legitimate concerns about nerfing it that I tried highlighting.

    I stand corrected.

Survivors have seen a dip in survival rates across all MMRs according to stats released in September 2022. They even posted stats for top 5% MMR and survival rates dropped there too. Whatever consensus on this forum is doesn't matter since it's purely anecdotal.

I still think WoO would still be greatly helpful to newbs, SoloQs, console gamers and even some experienced players even if it wasn't always on.

Why does having it turn off every once in a while (like say after 2 or 3 vaults or pallet drops) completely destroy the perk for anyone who chooses to use it?

  • Nurse's 1st blink attack should be basic. You get no argument from me there.

Her 2nd and 3rd blinks should be special.

You wanna use exposure perks on Nurse? Get good at scoring that hit first blink.

  • Works fine for me and I used it 5 minutes ago.

  • I wish we didn't have greasy playdough hair for most hair in DbD.

Jeff looks like he bought a bucket of KFC and rubbed it all over his head before he ate it.

    1. It would hurt solo queue more than SWF (who already have a tougher time)
    2. It would hurt newer players more than experienced (who already have a tougher time)
    3. It would hurt console players more than PC players due to the lack of options for brightness enhancing (who already have a tougher time)

Nerfing Windows of Opportunity would make the groups of players who already don't have much for advantages in an even worse position than those who are already doing just fine.

That's still really not a good defense of why it should always be on. Just because SoloQs and newbs have a hard time does not mean there should be an always on aura perk that everyone can use and abuse. An external factor like brightness issues should not even be a factor in balancing perks. Did SoloQs, newbs and console players really have such a difficult time before 6.1.0? I doubt it especially since I played a lot of SoloQ back then and never ran WoO.

Before 6.1.0 it was still a popular and effective perk and it was not always on. The difference is the survivor had to think and do some memorization before their chase began and the auras disappeared. It took actual effort and skill to use effectively.

The problem with WoO now is that it removes a lot of thought from survivor gameplay and they can go on autopilot.

    @lagosta said:

If you ever played SQ and got downed upon reaching a tile only to find out the pallet was used, you know the value of Windows of Opportunity. <-- This is the reason why it's so popular with the majority of the player base. The perk is wasted in SWF as they can just call out where they're dropping pallets and use more powerful perks like Unbreakable.

And on the High Usage = Overpowered, see BBQ before and after the nerf as well as Bloodweb update.

Windows is effectively a Perk Tax in SQ for the lack of in-game communication, the same way BBQ was a perk tax on any killer that wanted BPs.

Old BBQ was great for DbD. It encouraged killers to player fairer by giving them a secondary objective (collecting stacks) as well as giving them information that gets them away from hooked survivors. BBQ used to be the best perk for survivors in the game, imo. Look at my username I still miss old BBQ.

WoO is not great for the game. It allows to survivors to play sloppier and drop pallets more carelessly than they should and rarely do they have to worry about the auras going away. WoO doesn't improve the game for everyone involved like old BBQ did.

Somehow I thought Overcharge was a Freddy perk when I posted that. Derp.

  • Does anyone actually have a good defense for why Windows of Opportunity should always be on?

Why should such valuable information just be available 100% of the time with no deactivation?

  • @Iron_Cutlass said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/359219/the-first-nerf-windows-of-opportunity-thread

I think Windows having such high usage rate is a product of literally having no information in SoloQ.

I cant tell you how many times Ive ran myself into a complete deadzone because my teammates used all the pallets nearby, and Windows solves that issue.

In SWF, you can at least call out what pallets youve used. In SoloQ, the lack of information just really leaves more to be desired.

As for someone "dropping 5 pallets in one chase", if you dont like it, you dont have to chase that survivor, just drop chase and go for someone else. Or continue to chase them and burn through all the resources the Survivors have. Either one works. But I digress.

Many people are saying that only newbs and SoloQs are running WoO when that's just not true. I frequently see SWF members running it too.

My problem with WoO is that survivors can pretty much turn their brain off and run to the next yellow aura. If the perk wasn't always on at least they'd have to try to do some memorization and planning then it would be much more healthy.

No, it's not a fact, but I know you can't accept that.

Usually, when someone rees 'It's a FACT!'; all they are spouting is some opinion that's usually wrong & trying to shut down all discussion because they know they don't have anything valid to argue.

You plugging your ears and saying my opinion is invalid does not make it so but keep being selfish. I hope they make Killer Adepts easier, just to spite you now. I loathe people who scream 'IT'S A FACT!' in an attempt to shut down discussions due to fragile egos.

You have never actually tried to debate with me in good faith.

You start by calling my argument a non-argument without ever proving why. Not only did I do it the hard way but everyone who has got those achievements up until now has did it the hard way and I am quite sure many of them would agree it's a valid point. You state it's a "non-argument" and "not a valid reason" as if your word is law and you don't need proof.

You follow up by calling me selfish as it that invalidates what I am saying. You have nothing and resort to ad hominem attacks.

You follow up for a second time attacking me for stating something is a fact. Well? Refute it properly. If it's not a fact you should easily be able to disprove it. But you don't and you make up some anecdotal BS before devolving into more ad hominem attacks. You using the term "fragile ego" after trying to make a point by using all caps is quite ironic.

    You are full of it.

    Merry Christmas.

Edit: The only thing you've ever said is it's a "non-argument" and not a valid reason without ever proving anything. We're going in circles and you still have nothing. I'm done here. You can have the last word.

Imo they were destroyed because of usage rate instead of balance.

It's a convenient thing to hide behind.

But usage rates don't completely explain why they completely nuked Pop & Ruin. They could have made much more reasonable changes to Pop & Ruin and lowered their usage rates to reasonable levels. Lowering Pop to flat 20% (not 20% of current) and only adding the death deactivation (and not also destroying its regression) would have been those reasonable decisions.

It just makes too much sense to me that it was a business decision. Especially knowing BHVR.

If WoO is just a tool for new players then why do we see a high percentage of all players using it?

Most often I am seeing WoO played alongside Dead Hard and Resilience. These are not new players. These are players who want easy mode DbD who don't have to even have to think when they play the game. Drop glowing yellow thingy and move on to next glowing yellow thingy...

  • For broken keys, yes.

But for purple and skeleton keys, no. Sometimes they are literally the key to escaping.

Plus if you're running Ace in the Hole the occasion skeleton key with blood amber is a fun find.

  • @Blueberry said:

I think Windows is fine. High usage doesn't imply it needs nerfs as you said.

Good examples of where that went wrong on things that didn't need nerfing:

    Ruin

    Self Care

    Pop

Pop and Ruin weren't destroyed for the sake of balance. They were destroyed so BHVR could sell more Freddies, Nemesises and Sadakos.

How and why is it non-argument?

Because 'I did it the hard way so everyone should' is not a valid reason to avoid making it easier.

    It's simply called being selfish.

You shouldn't make ridiculous statements that can be so easily destroyed with one simple explanation. It makes you look silly. ;)

I'm not being selfish. I want other players to feel the same sense of achievement I felt when I got the achievements.

Just because you can't achieve something and asking for it to be reduced so you can achieve it is being selfish.

It is a valid argument, that's a fact.

“I am proud of my achievements because they are hard.”

The thing with DBD achievements is they aren’t really all that hard. Some are tedious and time consuming but not hard. Like you said with adepts, you’ll get them easily enough if you wait for rank reset, also everyone gets potato teams now and then, not to mention doing them if you are in low MMR helps too.

    And what's your point?

So are you agreeing with me that achievements shouldn't be made easier?

I suppose you could say getting prestige the old way was also "cheapened". But it's a game not climbing a mountain or training to become an astronaut. Get some perspective.

I would change it to Ruthless because there are too many malicious DC.

There are some massive difference between prestige and achievements that you're missing. Old prestiges were optional but they aren't any longer while achievements will always be optional. Prestige can only be seen inside DbD and has nothing to compare to. Achievements are visible across platforms and are comparable to achievements in most other games.

I am proud of my achievements because they are hard. The hardest achievements are actually the best achievements because when I complete them I actually feel a sense of achievement. I managed to do something that less than 1% off the players of a game have achieved.

You also forget what the purpose of achievements actually are for developers. They are put there so players will put more time into their games to earn them. So that's why there are almost always some extremely difficult and time-consuming achievements. DbD is actually pretty tame compared to SquareEnix which often makes you do multiple 100 hour playthroughs of their games to get all the achievements. At least in DbD one adept attempt is only ~15 minutes.

Free advice: Make your Adept attempts while your grade is low like at the time when you first play right after rank reset. It is much easier to get a Merciless Victory (aka a Double Pip) when you are in Ash or Bronze rank where you only need 14 or more emblem points to get Merciless instead of the perfect 16 you need in Iridescent rank. A 14 point Adept is actually really easy to attain.

And what exactly is your definition of "winning"? 4k? Then all the nonsense above is cringe, and your excuses for justifying tunneling are pathetic. That comes from hook-only Onryo main, btw.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3301159#Comment_3301159

Golden words of wisdom. If anything - this kinda stuff should be BP penalized with extreme prejudice. Like, confiscate everything killer got from tunneling/camping, wherever face or proxy (which is same kinda cringe) and donate to victim under "Distraction" tag. Cuz that's exactly what said victim did - distracted this hypothetical sad joke of a killer the entire time.

    Wow.

The scenario in the post you quoted is the definition of losing for a killer. When there are 4 survivors left with only 1 gen left and they are spread out so the killer cannot defend them. At this point the killer has to do something desperate to try to claw the game back. If they choose to follow the imaginary survivor rulebook for killers they are literally throwing the game.

If you say you've never camped, tunneled or slugged as an Onryo main then I'd call you a liar.

    Welcome to the forums.

  • I usually prefer SoloQ as I think it is the most authentic DbD experience for survivor. Also if I die early I can queue back up immediately.

However thanks to Eruption I just don't want to play survivor at all anymore.

  • Windows should deactivate after dropping 3 pallets and not reactivate until they get hooked. It's too good for it to always be on.

  • I would try to take it up with BHVR as well if you can. Odds are they'll tell you to pound sand, but they might take the high road and send you a code for the game. It might be worth a shot.

  • @StarLost said:

Well...it is, sort of. I mean, it's on deep special for maybe 4 months of the year, and even outside of that it's what...$15?

For a game that'll last you potentially thousands of hours, even factoring in spending the same as two AAA games in total, you've done pretty well.

My point is that you'd have to math shards out differently, because I know I'm swimming in the things most of the time from login rewards, events and the like. Aside from...maybe my first 40 hours, I've generally had enough to get what I needed - the only mandatory 'buy in' was Bubba for BBQ, and that changed.

The new player is not going to look at it the same way the veteran is.

I think it would certainly be daunting to look at the wall of characters and perks. Especially for a completionist. And the new player doesn't know all the tricks like how often and when sales and events happen. Once they start trying to figure out how long they have to grind or how much money they have to spend on DbD, it quickly adds up to "holy sh."

I definitely think the grind and the price contributes to DbD's player retention problem.

  • It makes me wonder how many players try DbD, realize how bad the grind is and leave never to return.

  • Eruption wouldn't be so bad if it stopped affecting gens that reach 0%. It would at least give the perk some (weak) counterplay where survivors would know they're safe if they start working on a dead gen or they can let a gen zero out to be sure Eruption can't proc on it. Killers wouldn't be guaranteed Eruption value then and kicking dead gens wouldn't be so valuable.

This one change alone would take a lot of power away from the 3gen camp strategy that the current meta has empowered.

  • New Haddonfield makes me miss Old Haddonfield. It was a decent map if they just kept the god window closed and broke up the long fences and hedges.

I especially miss the Old Haddonfield hooks. They were light-colored and slender, they were unique and elegant. The new dark green hooks they seem just like every other hook now.

  • @Sycamore said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3301875#Comment_3301875

I think their point was you get a lot more pressure you NEED by killing a survivor, than just hooking 3 different survivors. I have had games where I snowballed hooking each different survivor and still lost because gen speed was much too fast. Using normal builds running things like Pain Res, and deadlock.

I guess this is a teachable moment.

Comments like these are not helpful in anyway.

I don't care what you think the OP thought.

  • My Polls forum looks similar using the Vivaldi browser.

BHVR knows about this issue and that no one can make new polls. But they can't do anything on their end and have escalated it with the crew that provides the forum software. They're probably on holidays so I wouldn't expect a fix any time soon.

  • I find Billy fun because it's always exciting to try to dodge a chainsaw hit. Also Billies are so rare nowadays that it's just nice to see one for the sake of variety. Also, Billy is still a strong killer with an instadown and great mobility so it is more likely that they might not be running the latest gen kick meta because he doesn't necessarily need it to get good results unlike many M1 killers.

Billies don't have to be curving Billies to be good either. It is not necessary for a Billy to run double Engravings and curve. A Billy can get good results with back-revving, high mobility and a few mindgames. A lot of people think Billy has a high skill floor to be good, but he really doesn't. Curving does give him a high skill ceiling though.

I have a lot of fun playing Billy. Mostly because I usually don't play Billy too seriously and my choice build is rather hilarious.

    image.png
  • @DBDVulture

Survs eliminate gens so I need to eliminate one of them with three hooks. I get NOTHING for hooking three people one time.

Killers get a lot more value than "NOTHING" from hooks and not just kills. A hooked survivor is not doing gens and neither is the rescuer. Survivors "waste" a lot of time rescuing and healing teammates.

With any perk that relies on downs or hooks for them to be activated (especially regression perks like Pain Res, Pop, or Eruption) it is often more beneficial for the killer to go for the fastest down or hook and many times it is better to not tunnel.

  • In the years since I started playing DbD in 2018, I think 2022 has been the worst of those years.

  • @Stabby_Widdershins said:

The problem with moving away from the 'gen stall meta' is that it then leaves Killers with less time to kill Survivors.

That's the point of the gen stall meta; to buy Killers more time. The way the game works is that Survivors try to escape ASAP because the longer they stay, the greater the chance they die.

Survivors can, working as a team, pop all gens in under 6 minutes. That's, literally, less time than it takes 3 Survivors to die if they don't speed up Stage 1 or 2.

If that META is to change, it will only be because Killers no longer NEED to stall. But until that happens; the best Killer loadouts will require ways to slow down gens.

Who is actually asking for an end to the "gen stall" meta? No one that I can see.

I liked the gen stall meta that was Undying Ruin. I got to search for totems which I didn't find boring or I could choose to power through Ruin and risk the regression if the killer showed up.

People are asking for an end to the gen kick meta. The meta that sees killers running Overcharge, Call of Brine and Eruption and mindlessly kicking gens and forgoing chases. Survivors can find themselves stuck cycles of being chased off the gen and then returning to the gen after the killer kicks it until the killer kicks the gens the want to kick before going for an Eruption proc, then the survivor has to try to guess when their teammate is going to go down or eat 25 seconds of incapacitation if not both.

  • The Prestiging update didn't change how I did bloodwebs. Back then I would try to do webs optimally to spend the least amount of bloodpoints aside from collecting stuff I want.

The update that made nodes cheaper did change how I do bloodwebs. Now I generally try to slam out the webs as fast as humanly possible and I often target more expensive nodes just because I want to spend the bloodpoints as fast as possible because bloodwebs just take so long to do.

  • @Halloulle said:

I'm not ashamed of my prestige in the slightest. But I am tired of it altering gameplay. Stuff like getting dodged by both survivors and killers as well as abnormal gameplay in matches. I just want to play the game.

Considering your responses in this thread, I doubt you are actually looking for any reason and you'd rather hear other people agree with you.

However, I am relatively hopeful. The game is certainly in a much better spot than it was two years ago. The BP Grind has been reduced. Perks are easier to obtain. Borrowed Time is base-kit, which definitely helps Solo Q. The meta did change. DH was finally nerfed. Wesker released, who is a strong AND fun Killer who feels pretty fair (if too common) to play against. They tried something very ambitious with Knight. MMR is functionally back to the old Rank System.

All this to say I'm relatively hopeful that they'll add 60 FPS to Xbox One, PS4 and low-end PC's soon

I'm more curious if anyone knows anything more than I do about what's coming in 2023 besides what's on the roadmap, icons and lunar event. I've heard rumors the next chapter is licensed but it's just a rumor.

If you dont want to express the rational reasons why dbd isnt a quality product, then this thread is bunk or bait.

Your are going about it the wrong way, its not even possible to see if the expectations you have are good ones from the thread.

If you don't, then this is just doomer posting, which really should not be allowed here. Unconstructive Criticism is useless to devs.

    Ahem.

In the OP I asked for reasons to be optimistic. I want to be optimistic. I said in the OP I didn't want to talk about what's wrong with DbD, you had fair warning.

You rolled up in this thread, never answered the actual OP, are trying to derail the thread and then are telling me what "should not be allowed here."

Soudns really overly negative about this, if your value sto evaluating what has happened is bad then your evaluation will be bad too. You are expecting too much or expecting the wrong things.

I have many ideas myself for bHVR, but I cant prove anyone of them would be actually good, bHVR employees are the one who have to prove to their fellow employees that an idea for the game is a good idea. You can only reasonably expect changes that can be can go though that process.

That leaves the Question with you, What did you expect and why? Cause that is the real reason for your pessimism.

You lay the blame for my pessimism at my feet when it's BHVR that continues to fail to deliver a quality product.

    That's what I expect. A quality product.

What was wrong with the perk pass? I don't think I've ever seen this many perks be widely used on either killer or survivor.

Hell, Dead Hard saw 50-80% pick rates for years. That was a positive change at the very least.

The rest of those are all pretty positive. Especially the killer reworks. Why would these be a downgrade?

Nerfing Dead Hard was the only good thing about that patch, even though it didn't go far enough as it is still the strongest exhaustion perk. Almost all of the other perk changes were far overtuned. I thought the game would come out more balanced after 6.1.0, but I don't think it did.

Destroying Pop & Ruin (perks that can earned for free) and promoting Overcharge & Eruption (perks paywalled behind licensed characters) to the top of the killer meta still screams money grab to me to this day.

I only see about maybe 4 of those as net-positive changes. Most of them are lateral, expected or net-negative changes, #10 being the worst by far. Thinking about the changes made in 2022 make me pessimistic about DbD's future.

None of you have provided me any reason to be optimistic.

Thankfully I do still have 1 reason.

I do still occasionally have fun playing DbD.

I wish I had more reason to be optimistic, but I guess it is enough.

My OCD compels me to look at every screen at the end. 🥲 I know, no fault but my own, but it's still frustrating to see a depip for something entirely out of your control.

I know what you mean, but grades are really just supposed to measure playtime now and one can play a lot but still never gain any pips or lose all their pips for things totally out of their control, which is the most terrible feeling ever.

I've known people who hated on killers/their own teammates just because they lost a pip. I kinda feel like it causes extra unnecessary toxicity in an already super toxic community?

Honestly if they ever did remove pips they would probably replace the emblem system with something twice as grindy so perhaps it's best to count our blessings.

I only have optimism about DBD atm to be honest. Yes a lot of chapters come out a bit messy but besides that there's only been massive improvements especially in the past 2 years. Even the big perk change this year while creating not the best meta I'll admit at least shows it something they're willing to do.

    But how?

You must be seeing the changes as improvements that I see as net-negative changes.

I just don't see it. I want to be positive about DbD's future. I want to see the light.

  • Did you only prestige him to 3?

  • The proper question is: When should I tunnel? (or camp or slug)

It is a tactical decision. There are times when it is absolutely necessary to tunnel if you want to have a chance at winning like if 4 survivors are still alive that only have 1 gen left to complete and the gens are not defendable. Or if you put up the appearance of tunneling you pull survivors off gens who then try to help their friend. There are also times when you really don't want to tunnel when the survivor has DH, DS and OTR. Sometimes the survivor forces your hand and makes tunneling the correct decision like when they bodyblock with BT.

I don't have any qualms about tunneling when it is tactically called for.

I also like to get 2 hook everyone if I'm stomping a group of survivors who can't get a gen done before the dying begins.

I try not to tunnel until it becomes a necessity.

They added an ignore list, I'm pretty sure?

Also I don't want to double post so I'm gonna quickly say - I'm not really the biggest fan of the new forums at all. Everything feels so disjointed, it's a pain to navigate and idk the old layout was pretty good and looked clean. Not really a fan of how it looks in general

Need more time to formulate more accurate feedback but yeah.

Oh thanks. These new forums are so scrappy I just assumed it wasn't an option. My bad.

    I'll unignore you now. 😜

Edit: Yeah the Ignore list doesn't work as intended. If I go to a user's profile and click their name and select Ignore it does nothing. I actually had to go into my ignore list to add someone to the ignore list. When I try to Unignore it does the confirmation dialogue but doesn't actually unignore that user.

    I can't actually unignore Brokenbones now. 😨

2nd Edit: I can't even reproduce ignoring someone. I can't add the person to the ignore list I want on it and I can't unignore a person I don't want ignored. The system is completely broken.

3rd Edit: Ok I got it to do what I wanted but there is definitely still some issues like lag in displaying the info correctly or something.

  • Is it possible to get an ignore user option on this forum?

While most users on this forum are nice, respectful and add to discussions there are a couple less productive, mostly antagonistic members that never contribute to discussions that I would love to be able to put on my ignore list and not have to read their posts.
