What is the core problem with 2v8 mode?

I’m glad that the devs have tried to add fun/interesting things to the survivor side in 2v8 mode. However, despite their efforts, the killer queue times are worse than ever, which tells us that either way more people are playing killer or way fewer people are playing survivor than ever.

I’ve been trying to figure out why survivor side popularity seems to be at an all-time low. It’s not because survivor side isn’t strong enough. The powers and tools survivors have are extremely strong. I’ve gotten absolutely stomped as killer by survivors who know how to use them.

I really think it’s the lack of SBMM in 2v8 that is killing it. The skill level of teammates in some of my recent matches has been absolutely abysmal. Lots of matches with only 2-3 gens done (actually had one with zero gens done!). How is that even possible? I fully realize that 2v8 is supposed to be a casual, fun mode and not supposed to be hyper-competitive with fully accurate SBMM. I honestly don’t mind losing and I still have a lot of fun as survivor in 2v8. But I think a lot of veteran players have given up on 2v8 altogether because of the repeated frustration of getting matched with very low skill players. It’s the same problem that plagues the solo queue experience in normal mode.

Is there anything that can be done to fix 2v8 to incentivize veteran players to play despite the bad teammate frustrations? I guess killer side could be nerfed even more to make killer side super frustrating to play and deter people from queueing up as killer, but I’d much rather have something to incentivize people to choose survivor role instead.

Curious to know what others think about what is broken with the 2v8 survivor experience and how to fix it.

  • It's the lack of decent teammates, yes. I've been playing 2v8 constantly this last week and even though the invocation throwers are beyond frustrating the starting with items is a huge buff. I've primarily been using the mode to farm items for my destitute main. I don't even have to search chests anymore. I can just hop on a gen and survive with what I brought with me.

But there are matches where you have people who go down in 10s and hand the killers instant pressure. Much like 1v4, you start to realize immediately when you're cooked. Add in trolls who die on purpose or who are AFK and survivor feels terrible very often. Nerfing killer won't help with this. I'm not exaggerating when I say I'm basically always one of the last people standing in my bad survivor matches and often have the highest score. Not because I'm good, but because everyone else is awful.

Problem is a lot of killers are duos on comms and they're not being casual. So the casual survivors are just free treats for them, and detriments to the decent players on their teams. I think people don't give enough credit to how powerful coordinated killer synergies are in this mode.

Do you think this could be helped by increasing the gen bonus survivors get from being caged? Make it so potato teammates are contributing more when they are throwing.

  • I honestly still enjoy 2v8 survivor a lot, even in games where it's clear the killers are going to stomp from the beginning. The match goes from trying to complete objectives and outpace killers to avoiding the massacre and looking for powerful tools or allies for when you need help.

It's a pretty different but fun experience, and it makes me wonder whether 2v8 would be better positioned as like a 10 minute hide and seek mode where the exit gates open or hatches spawn after the timer is up. It would firmly set in the modes roles as a more casual way to experience DBD, and provide an easy way to face and killer powers in a learners setting while ignoring more in depth mechanics like juggling gens and perks.

  • Its more than just bad teammates, primary survivor frustrations still exist. Ping hits are more common because you might go against a team with one player in a different region. You can still be camped or tunneled, its just mildly more inconvenient for the killers. You can still be slugged for the 8k (though this is thankfully very rare). If a teammate dcs the bot is terrible, the killer bots can be predictable but still tend to be OK teammates and some can be very strong with wesker and nurse bot being homing rockets with their power. Then we add new frustrations like being double tapped and tons of haste.

To make more evenly skilled matches you would need to dramatically increase the queue time for killers and survivor queue time would probably go up a bit as well. Even if you made the matchmaking create more even skill levels you would likely just see more killers resort to sweatier tactics, just like 1v4 an early tunnel out(s) mean less gen pressure overall.

The mode also just isn't that survivor sided, its only a bit survivor sided and then only in a perfect world of even matches. I have had 5+ escapes in a decent number of my survivor matches but this run as killer I have only had a single 4k and a single 5k with every other match being 6k+ (Xeno is excellent in the mode btw), this includes matches against multiple survivors with 6k hours and 4+ stacks. That doesn't mean I didn't struggle in some matches but I still ended up winning. People love to say survivor skill issue for my killer wins but that doesn't match my survivor experience. If there was truly a rampant survivor skill issue I wouldn't be getting the amount of victories (not just escapes) I am getting on that side. I don't think I am an amazing killer either so I suspect many have a similar experience to me.

  • Teammates have gotten worse, and it feels like no one is choosing their class properly. For some reason, no one wants to play Scout, even though it's one of the most important and fun classes to play. A lot of people will pick Torchbearer instead despite it being difficult and almost useless in this mode.
Since Nemesis' zombies buff, it's been a pain to do the last two gens when two zombies are spawning close to almost every gen, while the killers are patrolling the area every few seconds.
I feel like the most miserable thing about this mode is that the chase isn't really interactable. When the killers group up, you get hit by one and then go down a moment later to the other. It feels like 2v1, and it's really frustrating.
The chase will always be the fun part of the game, once that's taken away, there's really no point in playing.

  • I guess to start, was there something the thread you made a month ago that didn't answer this? Because I don't think anything really changed.

    The big answers

1: It's not just about survivor strength, but not having enough variety and interesting things to do. Being strong is helpful for the role that needs players, sure, but its not the only thing. The one 'addition' this go around really doesn't add anything and, in many ways, subtracts.

2: Killer is far more interesting for many, with the ability to play different killers and with a friend.

3: Play while you wait means that duos, the most common form of SWF, can move over to playing killer as well.

4: When you take all of that and factor in the need for 80% survivors, 20% killers, the problem magnifies.

I really think it’s the lack of SBMM in 2v8 that is killing it.

That could play a role, though with 8 survivors the chance that a survivor is really bad / throwing is just generally higher than in 1v4. But I don't know of anyone who regularly praises the quality of survivors they are paired with in soloq in 1v4 so that doesn't seem like the reason.

My experiences have been up and down. The last two trials all the survivors were focused and doing objectives and we steam rolled through, but on Friday I hit a stretch where it seemed like those on my team didn't know how to play the play game.

I fully realize that 2v8 is supposed to be a casual, fun mode and not supposed to be hyper-competitive with fully accurate SBMM.

The reason SBMM isn't accurate has nothing to do with the mode per se, but with the way queues are they don't want to make them any longer.

I do think a general problem is BHVR's attitude which is encapsulated by your sentence - viewing it as a fun, casual mode. I, the people I've played with, the comments I've seen in chat, don't seem to take it any more or less seriously than 1v4. It's a substantially different game, and whether you like it more or less is completely subjective, but BHVR's attitude towards it doesn't seem to mirror the player base which might be a problem in making longer term improvements.

    But that's straying off topic.

I think they just have to keep improving the mode while being careful not to drive away those who like it.

1: Create subclasses. As an example create a variety of the Guides, one with repressed alliance, one with built to last (if they keep the items), etc. Obviously these wouldn't be 1 to 1 conversions of 1v4 perks to 2v8, but the general idea. Give survivors more ways to do the classes.

2: Adjust the way the catch up mechanic works. Give a slight decrease to the progression gained per hook state, but then also make it so deaths reduce the rate at which gens regress (or how many times killers can regress). 2v8 keeps one of the core 1v4 problems, if the killers get out a couple of survivors early the game is effectively finished, but survivors are 'stuck' in the game playing a pointless trial. I think its those really 'bad' game, not just where the survivors lose but its an incredibly boring loss, that makes survivors exit after the game instead of playing another.

  • It is more or less a volume problem. One bad teammate in 1v4 can be dangerous, but depending on the killers skill level and the skill level of the other 3 other survs, matchups can be winnable, or you get smth like a 3-2 man out. With 8 survs, if you actually have 3-4 teammates who are genuinely just bad (very short chases, questionable gameplay) then you lose due to pressure. You know its over when theres 4 people caged on the other side of RPD at 7 gens xD

You do not need to "sweat" or "tryhard" to be more optimal.

I strongly think this game ACTUALLY needs a proper in depth tutorial.

Most weak/casual players are weak, because:

-They have no gen discipline, theres barely any gen uptime

-They have no clue how chase fundamentals work, a basic tutorial on how to run and chain tiles would help players

theres this overall "running around like a headless chicken" phenomenon, touching dulls (why even exists in 2v8), opening chests, selfishly ratting at 0 hook states.

No matter of buffs will fix this, dbd needs a proper way to teach the game

  • #1 2v8 perfectly shows how HORRIBLE the average gameplay level of your average dbd gamer (both sides but mainly seeing it on survivor)
#2 the game is too fast for me to bother with 30+ minutes of a killer queue
#3 internal killer balance is HORRIBLE why even bother with slinger when nemesis is in the game or why bother with ghostie when you can just hop on dracula
#4 maps are just larger with nothing interesting inside them.
#4 classes for both sides are just… bland. no hexes. no boons. no hoarder class. no anti item class. etc etc.
#5 the 'catch up' mechanic unfairly punishes killers as it works on hook states instead of kills
#6 it appears too often leading to nothing interesting happening imho

and most importantly it screws up the 1v4 queue

This time around I've absolutely noticed an uptick in obvious comming, which is fine, but the playstyle feels like it has changed. Maybe it has just been my luck but killers are sacrificing broader map pressure to go for two taps in every chase, and when survivors are clumped together, it has resulted in absolute slaughter near every time.

It is beatable because when you notice them doing this, you can rest assured you're safe if you know at least one of them is far away from you, but it's possibly the least fun strategy to go against. The moment you interact with one of them in any capacity, you're pretty much dead in the next 20s. You simply can't loop two killers, so I've taken to shift+w-ing as a far away from important gens as I can to at least allow a bit of progress. That's boring.

When I'm killer I will opportunistically cut off a survivor I see my teammate pursuing to shorten the chase, but that's about it.

  • i feel like most of the time when i die it's not because of the killer but rather because my teammates just don't even bother going for the unhook. feels really bad to experience that multiple times in a row and makes me want to avoid the game mode altogether.

  • And suddenly comms are a problem when killers use them too, delicious.

This is 100% why I stopped playing 2v8. In theory this mode should be massively survivor sided. In my experience I escaped more matches in 1v4 compared to the last few iterations that I played of 2v8. I don't think the devs realize how much bad players bring something down in this game. It's not just the whacky casual mode. It's the mode that is awful to play on the survivor side.

The general match quality of 2v8 has gotten lower and lower with each version they have released. I have witnessed personally how the quality of players on the survivor side has declined dramatically. You basically have nothing left but casuals on the survivor side and sweats on the killer side. It's just not worth playing anymore IMO.

I kind of feel the same way. It’s gotten to the point where I think survivor players with at least a little bit of competence are constantly seeing teammates get downed instantly in chase, cleansing totems for no reason, not paying attention and getting grabbed off gens, spending most of the game hiding, etc and deciding that it’s not worth the frustration. It feels to me like a no-win situation because if you add SBMM to 2v8, it’s going to make killer queue times even worse, and if you keep it as-is with no matchmaking, then this problem continues and probably gets worse as we have seen over the past iterations of 2v8 mode. Even if there was some way to add SBMM to 2v8 without negatively affecting queue times, I don’t even trust that to work because it has never worked in 1v4 mode.

  • The #1 issue which is honestly unfixable (besides making 2v8 permanent to let the "novelty" of playing as a killer duo fade out entirely, which would probably do very bad things to 1v4 queues/matchmaking anyway) is queue times. Queue times are king and will forever be in the back of the devs minds when they design stuff.

For survivor at least for me it's honestly just the classes. Add more of them! Add a chest-focused one, a totem class, whatever other ideas just throw them at the mode and see which stick. Classes are fine but survivor will forever be vastly less "novel" than killer in 2v8. As eh/10 as the salts are I welcome them as something new for the simple reason they're a brand new thing as the mini-invocations they are.

That system is already really weird and feels like it activates when it shouldn't. The solution is actual matchmaking. I'm seeing 10k hour killers being put with potato survivors. Too many of these matches are determined in the lobby.

As someone who plays on comms a lot I've always been of the belief that comms don't matter as much as people think, but bad matchmaking can make it appear otherwise. If a bad killer is put with a coordinated 4man in 1v4 of course they'll likely lose. Same in 2v8. But then there's the opposite. Most of us who've played a lot of 2v8 have gotten those romantic couples with matching [name]<3[name] handles that clearly don't play killer much and are god awful, yet almost certainly on comms.

I've had a few matches against bad killers who've tried to double team me only for me to waste a couple minutes of their time and for it to become an automatic throw. Two-tapping works well when killers are good and surviviors are lacking in both chase ability and macro. I also drag them away from key gens and towards completed ones, but the average 2v8 survivor seems to do the opposite.

The problem with killer duos is comms plus skill and coordination. Two skilled killers—which is still the power role, as much as people think otherwise—coordinating on comms will likely be unstoppable against anything other than a skilled 5-8man, and those are extremely rare compared to good duos. These high hour duos need to be matched with good survivors but I don't think they ever will be. I think they want these matches decided in the lobby to increase 2v8s chaotic feel. And that's why people don't want to play survivor. It's not fun to watch three clowns do an invocation while you try to play properly, or to survive to the end of a bad match just so you can be the one humped and nodded at bybl some toxic TTV duo.

I don't really subscribe to the idea that it's super survivor sided, mostly because killer macro is much easier in the mode than survivor. Killers can just lock down a cluster of gens and defend them. The amount of matches my survivor teams lose with one gen left but everyone still alive is absurd because of this. It's amplified by the fact that almost no one wants to play Guide and focus on center gens. They want to do the 2v8 equivalent of 3 genning themselves by doing safe edge map gens. And the layout of these maps is much less known to the average player, so it's harder to judge. But the killer gets that info for free.

The buffs that killers have are also weirdly understated by the community. I haven't played Wesker in months because of how buggy he's been but I dusted him off last night and holy crap, I'd forgotten how crazy strong he is with the third dash plus the almost instant refresh. And I'm doing the classic Shadow Wesker thing where I'm just snatching oblivious people up mid-heal with my free aura read. Killers have more than people want to admit.

And yeah, the survivor sided benefits don't matter if the teammates are crap and don't know how to utilize anything.

That's the thing, I'm not claiming that killers that hang off each other's hips and constantly 2v1 are problematic in terms of power. As I said, they sacrifice macro hugely and it takes multiple survivors to blunder positioning for them to start to steamroll.

It's just super boring to go against. Either you're not getting chased, or you are and it's basically impossible to do much other than go down in the least problematic place you can reach unless both the killers are utter goobers. It's not fun and not particularly interactive.

  • But isnt this just the natural conclusion of adding "play while u wait"? Like before many players probably looked at the killer queues for 2vs8, saw that they were above 30 mins and said screw this im playing survivor. Now people look at the 45 minute queues, start queuing for killer and play survivor while they are waiting. Probably also the players that said the queues are too long before. So theres just way more people in killer queue and the queue time increases.

  • As crogers271 pointed out, you asked last 2v8 about the killer queues being so long, people gave you 2 pages of answers why players were choosing killer over survivor or not playing survivor at all. Since then nothing has changed to improve the survivor experience and encourage players to play the survivor role. Instead of survivor improving its gotten worse. If people didn't just switch roles there's a good chance they left for the new Halloween game or some other game (I've been seeing alot more DBD theme names in my Outlast Trials sleep room). Now when 2v8 comes around we have the same issue as previous 2v8s but an even smaller survivor queue - 1v4 killers go to 2v8 killer while the 1v4 survivors split between 2v8 killer and survivor.

If just looking at 2v8 the invoking salts haven't improved the survivor experience. Yes it's nice survivors got something new but it's a time sink searching chests and placing it only for it to apply to the players in the circle. If anything it's hurting the survivors more than helping. They need to be tweaked so they help the entire team and don't feel like such a selfish time sink.

Killers got a new killer to play with, that is going to draw more people to the killer side than the invoking salts will draw players to the survivor side. You place invoking salts down once, you see in the current state they really aren't that great and need tweaks. Only reason people are continuing to do them is the quests. Killer side if you want to try Xenomorph with every killer thats 14 matches of something new.

Matchmaking prioritizes time, with the huge lack of survivors in 2v8 there is no way the time priority would ever get disabled for a proper matchmaking. BHVR need to find other ways to make survivor more enjoyable so they can atleast have fun before they die. Get more players to play survivor because its fun to play, once there are more playing the survivor role there is a better chance at effectively fixing match making without the time priority ruining it.

New killers to 2v8 don't encourage players to go play survivor, they encourage players to go play killer. Instead of focusing on giving killers more killer options put the focus for a bit instead on more things for the survivors to play with. More classes, more items, tweak the salts to be more useful for entire team. Survivors have been begging for new classes every iteration, in the time they added a handful of killers survivors received 1 new class. There's so many classes they could add: head on class, chem trap class, pebble class, illusion class, boon class, etc. The appeal of playing with a teammate on killer side will continue to make killers have the longer queue even if survivors are the only ones receiving the new stuff for a couple iterations, it would hopefully just make it drop below the 30 minutes its currently sitting at.

I don't know if these are all on comms either though. I had a random killer that was kind of clinging to me last session. It worked out because we were both decent players and the chases were quick but it's not my vibe. It's possible people thought we were on comms though. I don't generally assume comms unless I have a strong indicator, and in 2v8 that's usually either seeing their info on the leaderboard or if they're both super BMy.

I don't think comms are necessarily strong with the two tapping method. I think they're strong with bigger macro plays. But, again, the players also have to be decent. It's the same as 1v4. Four potatoes aren't beating a good killer.

  • They are doing it again. There's a quest to use 10 tonics. Survivors you unhook don't let you heal them and instead run off in an attempt to find a heal tonic so they can progress the FOMO battlepass. Why would you be interested in playing a game mode where your teammates are actively rewarded by the developers to not help your team at all?

  • @bm33 said:

As crogers271 pointed out, you asked last 2v8 about the killer queues being so long, people gave you 2 pages of answers why players were choosing killer over survivor or not playing survivor at all.

I realize that I asked this same question last time we had 2v8, but I’m asking it again because the killer queue times have continued to get worse rather than better. Trying to understand, through consensus opinion in the discussion, why survivor side is so unattractive to play. Based on my own experience and what I’ve read in the comments for this thread, seems like the main core problems are 1) skill mismatch between survivor teammates and survivors vs killer; and 2) not enough new elements added to the survivor side to make it interesting.

#2 is easy enough to address, in theory - devs just need to put resources into it. Not sure how #1 can be solved without any functional matchmaking system.

Agree that this is a problem too, but a pretty minor one compared to the others, in my experience

I’ve been trying to figure out why survivor side popularity seems to be at an all-time low.

For me - I don't play DBD when 2v8 is out.

My teammates are always insanely bad / new (No hate - I just don't want to help multiple anchors on my team) and I hate Nemesis in the gamemode. I don't care if he needed a buff - I don't enjoy the trash ai zombies being stuck on the last few gens I need or interrupting chases. He's not fun to play against so I will stick to 1v4. I don't care if he's underpowered in the gamemode his zombies should be rolled back to 2. Would prefer if BHVR improves the zombie pathing and AI and even if they just made zombies faster in 2v8 instead of just dumping more ai in the gamemode. If the zombies were faster they could both be killed faster with pallets BUT could help in chase more. Either way - I won't be playing the gamemode with him in it so I don't care.

Is there anything that can be done to fix 2v8 to incentivize veteran players to play despite the bad teammate frustrations?

Give survivors more interesting mechanics like the portable invocation and stop creating frustrating scenarios like dealing with 4 zombies camping one gen. Survivors need more options and ways to interact with killer including headon or even last stand. There needs to be more classes that use more perks in the pool. A big part of DBD's identity is the huge variety each game has in 1v4 with the perk variety. For 2v8 you take all of that away from survivor. The classes are a great start but a lot of cool stuff survivors can do in 1v4 you cannot do in 2v8. You run from killer, you hop on a gen, you unhook, you die. Killer and survivor need a reason to interact with totems, survivors need some form of a stun build and killer needs a hex class.

2v8 was exciting initially but it's stagnating and I don't want to play it until its more fleshed out now.

tl;dr - I want the gamemode to be engaging

    Zombies are not engaging

Lack of perk variety on survivor is not engaging

The only exciting thing in the gamemode is being a killer with another killer - no wonder queue times are bad.

Teammates have gotten worse, and it feels like no one is choosing their class properly.

I disagree about chases, but everything else you said here is spot on. Assuming you have decent teammates (dare to dream), getting 2v1'd is a good thing because you can lead the killers to a dead portion of the map and give everyone else plenty of time to reset and push the last generators. I've seen many games won for the survivors because of this. Though I've personally been suffering noticeably less 2v1s this iteration.

I've played a ton of 2v8 this past week, as I always do. I'm still having a lot of fun, as I always do. But some of the games, especially over the weekend, really highlighted how dire the skill gap is getting.

I'm shocked that Scout seems to have been completely abandoned in this iteration. I was apprehensive about the new item changes because I assumed the free key would trigger a wave of people to play Scout just to be rats. That actually would have been better than what we have instead. I don't quite understand why, but practically no one is picking Scout anymore. I actively dodge lobbies with 0 Scouts in them and I think that means I'm dodging over half the lobbies I get. All while Scout is arguably the best class and the one that should ideally be maxed out at 4. I guess I'm part of that problem too since I've gone from occasionally playing Scout to pure Escapist lately, but it's hard to justify switching when in match after match, I do extremely well in chases as Escapist.

This is the part that's frustrating, and there's no humble way of saying this: I'm not just doing well as Escapist. I'm utterly embarrassing a lot of the killers I end up against. My chases have been better than ever. So many killers struggle mightily to land a single hit. With just one or two pallets, I can loop them for multiple minutes. I'm had more games than ever before with 0 hook states at end-game. I usually don't get 2v1'd until there's only a handful of teammates left. They either overcommit by themselves and sometimes lose the match because of it, or they just give up. But what happens when they give up on me? They find one of my teammates and get a down in under ten seconds. After seeing this so many times, I eventually realized the horrible truth. The reason I'm doing so well, the reason these killers respect the wrong pallets, the reason they fall for every fake, is that they don't need to play any better to catch anyone else in the lobby. The average 2v8 survivor is so terrible that the average killer doesn't know what to do against someone who's even remotely decent at looping. The truth is that I'm not very good at this game, and I should not be good enough to be this much better than all nine of the other players in the lobby. But considering that Torchbearer is a more popular class than Scout, it's clear how low the overall game sense of the 2v8 player base really is these days.

Thankfully, I've also had many matches where the killers were extremely good themselves, and I've had plenty of good teammates too. But I understand how other players might feel that the overall quality of matches is dropping a bit too much. My last match yesterday was pretty typical: I get chased a lot. I never get caught. At least two teammates I would swear were fresh installs, completely beyond help. Gates powered with 5 survivors still alive. Every other survivor downed and caged in the time it takes me to open a gate. I escape, killers get a 7K. It's hard to feel good about games like that even when you feel you did all you could to help.

  • 2v8 needs to be brought back to its 1v4 roots this version has kinda ran its course imo. throw out balance and just add regular loadouts and all the killers. maybe then people will get labbing. we haven't even TRIED that yet.

  • Lack of killers, or survivor classes.

#2 is something they've been really stubborn about addressing for too long. For a "survivor sided mode" the survivor side really doesn't get much to play with. It's kind of ridiculous they've added 12 killers (ontop of the original 5) and in that same time they only added 1 new survivor class and a random item. At the very least they should've been adding 1 new survivor class for every killer added.

#1 is rough because its a vicious circle. You can't have proper matchmaking if the players just aren't there. Need to find another way to increase the survivor players to have enough for matchmaking to work and not prioritize time. There have been plenty of posts about how to increase survivors fun in 2v8. Multiple iterations survivors have said 4 zombies aren't fun, they're boring and frustrating, and that all the aura reading is annoying. The need for more survivor classes not more killers. Changes need to be made to make survivor more enjoyable so players will want to load in as survivor, need to do that until there's enough players for matchmaking to have a chance.

I will say this iteration is feeling worse than last iteration as survivor. First 2 days weren't too bad but since Friday most of my survivor matches the killers know the cage spawns and are there as the rescue is happening or just after. I could blame teammate/match making but really it's just that tunneling is really strong, even in 2v8. The back and forth from previous iterations just isn't there this time which is making me sign off and play something else way sooner than I did previous iterations.

  • Has anyone noticed the play while you wait que fun bug? If you que as killer and play survivor you lose your spot as killer. The wait time as killer goes from around normally 25ish minutes to in my experience 45 minutes and this has happened everytime. If i want to play killer I cant play survivor and have to wait the long que time as killer so that may be why survivors are hard to find because you cant play as you wait.

This has never happened to me

  • 2v8bug.png

Happens consistently to me, priority queue is just broken and has the risk of never getting you to a game.

  • It's always going to be more appealing to play with another killer than it will be to play with twice as many uncoordinated teammates.

  • In this mode, being chased as a Survivor isn’t much fun. Sometimes, by constantly using powerful pallet loops and occasionally triggering the 2016 Sprint Burst, you can force the Killer to give up without ever taking a single hit; other times, in a 2-on-1 situation, you’ll be taken down with no chance of escape. In short, it’s an extreme either-or situation: either you dominate, or you get dominated.

I had something like this happen today. I queued for killer and waited about 5 minutes before begrudgingly queuing to lose as survivor. When I got back to killer queue I waited a bit because it usually just starts you when you complete your one match in the meat grinder, but it went well past the original time of 36 mins and the estimated one was stuck at 20. So I suffered through another survivor match and it worked, but the final wait was 50 minutes.

Super annoying, especially considering the amount of survivor I currently want to play is zero.

I don't really subscribe to the idea that it's super survivor sided, mostly because killer macro is much easier in the mode than survivor.

I agree, I think in part because 1v4 is more lopsided, something being roughly balanced seems survivor sided. Killers have a lot less games were they just smash the survivors compared to 1v4, but last time BHVR reported the kill rate numbers it still leaned killer. It's just there are a lot more matches with just a few kills, compared to 1v4 where if survivors win its a good chance all four get out.

It's also which version of killer are we talking about or averaging them together, because just like 1v4 there's a huge difference between randoms paired together instead of coordinated pairs, except its now on the killer side instead of survivor.

They want to do the 2v8 equivalent of 3 genning themselves by doing safe edge map gens.

I've had lots of players running to the edge of the map for heals. Sometimes even medics and it's like 'we already would have had you healed back there, stop wasting time'.

I think one of the big issues, and would switch the balance of power of the game, is if more survivors understood the hook state economy. Zero hooks? Be aggressive, especially if others have been hooked. Two hooks? Play absurdly safe especially if no one else is on two hooks. Except people don't adjust enough, cautious players stay cautious the whole game, aggressive players get eliminated quickly leaving the team in trouble.

I just wanted to bring noticed to a ongoing problem and noticed even Behavior themselves mentioned it but have no plans to fix it. That means sadly for some players like me and above if we want to try killer we either que and wait the 20 to 30 minutes which I have and it can be fun but it is also just a long wait for a short match. I wish you all well and Good luck in your games and I do hope none of you suffer from this bug. I still play survivor sometimes but it is sad I can't play killer unless i really want to sit there waiting in killer que but I can watch tv or read while I wait so no biggie. Bugs are no problems with games and you always learn to manage them. =) Keep up the good work and enjoy it.

I honestly believe the only thing keeping the kill rates from being sky high is inexperienced killers. I've had survivor matches where a killer overcommits and it's a throw. I had one where two bad killers tried to double team me only to give up after losing four gens. They ended up with 3 hooks. But when I queue with a random killer, as long as they're decent, we almost definitely win. I haven't played a ton yet but i think I'm sitting at about an 80% KR, and that would be higher if hatches weren't so plentiful. With 8 survivors on the map and matches being heavily solo it seems to be almost guaranteed that 1-3 of them will be the worst players you've ever seen. If the killers down them instantly then the spiral begins, just like 1v4.

Except people don't adjust enough, cautious players stay cautious the whole game, aggressive players get eliminated quickly leaving the team in trouble.

This is the macro issue, and the bad player issue. There are such a baffling amount of people playing 2v8 that don't seem to understand even the basics of the game. It's like the game is streaming for free and randoms can just jump in and try it out.

  • For me it's mainly a lack of variety that's a core problem. But it's kind of a catch 22 situation as well. A lack of variety exacerbates the problem of putting in Killers that are not universally loved (like Legion), but then also having to play it safe and drip feed new Killers that would be acceptable to a majority means variety never really improves and so the mode quickly begins to feel stale. I've personally had at least one Killer in the mode that I don't enjoy facing since iteration 2 (The Spirit) and 3 (Wesker) and it does suck a bit having much increased odds of facing a Killer you don't like more often than you normally would in 1V4. I guarantee whatever Killer BHVR add to 2V8 next, they will be hated by at least some of the players and their addition will make less players want to queue up for Survivor.

That said, I think the vast majority of players still playing 2V8 are newer players who aren't jaded by the experience of playing against 5 shadow Weskers in a row. So this might not really be a problem for mode's popularity.

On a personal note, I've had less desire to play since they took my main away from the mode (Killer is where the real fun is to be had in 2V8).

Yeah I'm seeing so few of them too. And hardly any Weskers, thankfully. I don't miss the endless factory of 120+ ping Shadow Weskers that the last few iterations seemed to consist of.

Otherwise it's been a decent variety of killers.
