Is DBD a competitive game?

Nothing to say here, just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

  • You are competing against other players so it is by definition a competitive game.

  • Nah, at the very highest level it's just spirit/nurses with anti-gen builds against efficient swf teams spamming gens.

  • Spoiler Spoiler Warning ▲▼

You've seen the amount of RNG this game has? RNG can be used in competitive games, look at Luigi's misfire in the Smash series, most times his side special acts normally but it has a random chance of going much faster and being way stronger. Or Mr. Game and Watch's 9 from his side special which picks a number between 1-9 with 9 being strong. These work because they are unexpected and actually bring hype. Seeing a survivor get a purple key out of a chest and hoping into hatch isn't nearly as exciting and I think it's due to it ending abruptly, while the examples I mentioned early feel more like strong finishes to the hopefully good match that was just happening.

I think the main reason I'm opposed to DBD being a competitive game is the fairness. There isn't any. One side is clearly more better than the other and this results in uninteresting matches most of the time, and how long the games take don't do any favors. Even in other games, going back to my favorite example of Smash Brothers, where a character has a really bad match up (like Ganondorf vs. Pikachu), the matches are usually short and due to the fair playing field of legal stages, Ganon does have a fair chance to try to beat Pikachu. DBD isn't interesting when you just see 3 people working on gens slowly (because the killer has a gen defense build) and a person looping a Nurse for a bit.

I guess by definition DBD is a competitive game by the fact there are players going against each other, but I think I'd rather see Gang Beasts in tournament than this.

Tl;dr: DBD is too poorly balanced and too luck reliant to be competitive in my eyes, and the meta's too stale for it to be anything remotely interesting in high level play. It's best a casual game with lot of knowledge needed to get in, like, idk, DnD? Can't think of a good comparison (don't even know if DnD fits my description, I was just struggling to find a comparison).

  • Not even remotely. The Devs themselves say it isn't. They kind of have the last word, and very deliberately make RNG an absolutely enormous factor in this game, which removes any real element of fairness and therefore competition.

And the argument that going against people makes it inherently competitive that I keep getting thrown in my face is extremely flawed in that it means that literally nothing humans ever do in existence is ever casual in any possible way, shape or form because no matter what there will always be a way of comparing our capabilities and results with others no matter what it possibly is. Let's all have a Rock, Paper, Scissors competition to decide who goes into the Siege Casual Mode deathsquad.

  • No, it is not a competitive game, there should not even be tournaments in DbD because, a tournament should be 1v1 or 4v4 or 10v10 as in fighting games, Rocket League or CSGO. Therefore, the games that I mention do fall into the competitive category. Instead Dead by Daylight should bring more casual games, a casual game for me is to play against people who are not communicated and who do not know each other, instead the SWF with more experience are bound to be more competitive. Dead by Daylight should respect what is according to the categories.

A horror survival game. Where your goal is to survive or die, nothing competitive.

  • God almighty no. Its a spooky party game at most, people who play it competitively inherently ruin the experience for others. This is why most comp players stick to KYF with each other, because its the sensible and kind thing to do. This game was not built for hyper competitive players.

  • Can't be completive. Since the game is asymmetrical, and the game is heavily RNG dependent. Basically in all serious competitive games everyone starts at an even playing field. In this games clearly not everyone starts at a even playing field.

  • I play DBD the most "competitively". Meaning I actually try and learn the nooks and crannies of the game and actively get better — more specifically playing Trickster. But I still meme around a lot with survivors and let people out of hatch frequently. It's low-key kind of a dream to be a potential fog whisperer and/or considered one of the "best" Trickster players. Other games I play I don't care enough to actively try and improve my skill. But do I think there should be tournaments and whatnot? No. As others have stated above it's too RNG.

  • DBD is undoubtedly a competitive game. However, the game is not in a healthy enough state to be played this way.

I hope you achieve your goals on being a fog whisperer and one of the top Trickster players someday! It'll certainly be difficult to reach both, but I believe in ya.

  • Some matches would say otherwise though.

  • Well, if you mean how its designed than its 100% casual party game.

DBD is a casual game, but it can be played competitively like any other game. There's nothing wrong with players wanting to play any game competitively, its just not designed around that.

The problem is that these two groups should not mix, and SBMM should fix that. Competitive players suck the fun out for people who just want a casual game and competitive players don't get the challenge they want from casual players.

Its kinda like Smash Bros., its designed to be a party game, but any game where people are against each other will have those that play it competitively.

This is exactly how I feel.

It's a party game, but one that very easily frustrates and tilts people. So they sweat and come up with reasons why they have to in order to enjoy the game.

But ultimately, that's players making the game competitive and not the game itself being that way naturally.

  • Competitive game have balance, but DBD never have it.

Suvivor party game this name more correct.

  • It is competitive by dictionary definition, there's no debate. The game not being balanced and not being aknowledged by it's own devs as competitive doesn't make it less competitive. They even introuduced a system to make it more competitive, but don't want to go all the way by showing MMR publicly because they would have to admit it.

Competitive: of or pertaining to competition.

Competition: (uncountable) The action of competing.

(countable) A contest for a prize or award.

Competing: To be in battle or in a rivalry with another for the same thing, position, or reward; to contend.

To be in a position in which it is possible to win or triumph.

To take part in a contest, game or similar event.

This is so broad that literally everything is competitive and the word loses all meaning, hence why we in the gaming world use it contextually. With that context usually considered as a situation where all competing parties have a reasonably similar chance of winning. A definition we borrow from the sports world, by the way.

  • It is a competitive Game, but sadly an unbalanced one.

  • Competitive games dont have à lot of RNG in them to give EVERYONE the same chance

Rang in dbd: maps, pallets, totems, loops, loop chains, bugs, hook spawns (the one that leave big hook dead zones)

Just the Map gives sometimes an unfair advantage to the other team, or ######### up your killer power (billy on Lery for instance)

The game is not balanced to be competitive either

The players are mostly not playing in this way

  • I think it's only something that you yourself can decide. There's not necessarily a right or wrong answer.

Like almost anything can be made into a competitive game ~ it just depends on the mindset of the person playing it and on what they want from the game.

  • I don't believe DBD is competitive, and it shouldn't.

But I do know that any game where you're PVPing other players and try to play to win (even though you really shouldn't) is by definition competitive.

So I think I'm going with other

  • It is a casual game due to all the randomness and differences between stuff people can bring into the trial, but for some reason many people do treat it competetively.

  • It's whatever you want it to be.

  • It's both. It can be played casually for those who don't enjoy serious competition or it can be played competitively if someone wished to start up a gamer sports league for official competitions like they do in other games.... though with one killer and 4 survivors it would have to be done more like the pitcher batter dynamics of baseball rather than the 5v5 dynamics in other sports.

  • Its quite sad so many people think competetive means "ESport".

  • The word "competitive" means different things in different contexts.

DBD is "competitive" in the sense that it's not a cooperative game -- players are competing against each other to win.

DBD is not "competitive" in the sense of being balanced like an Esport. It's a game people play for personal enjoyment.

  • Add a casual mode and ill consider it casual, forced mmr is clearly created to be competitive.

  • DBD is weird because it's in this sort of grey area. It's a game that puts 2 sides up against each other, which makes it competitive. However, many if not most people play it more casually. It's like its own thing.

The thing is that the game tries to achieve a competitive feeling, but because its not balanced at all, ppl think its a casual game and then we get this mess called Dead by Daylight where you hate it, but still play on a daily basis (makes no sense) while devs in their delusion believe that "They did a Pretty Good Job so Far."
