  • You’ve discovered what many of us have known for a long time. The matchmaking system simply does not work, especially if you’re playing at peak times when there is a huge deficit of killer players. After about 30 seconds the system will give up and just throw you in with the next survivor group in line, regardless of how high their MMR is compared to yours.

  • a lot of the stuff that gets filtered out is really inexplicable. If the devs are worried about all these supposedly naughty words then they should get rid of the chat altogether. Its only purpose is to propagate toxicity in the game

  • If only we had a system that measured your score in different categories like duration of chases and escaping chases, taking protection hits, unhooking and healing survivors completing gens in addition to escaping.

    Oh wait….

    🙄

  • It’s bound to happen. I’m a pretty casual player, so I fully expect there to be a lot of players out there who are way better at the game than I am. I don’t mind losing to players who are clearly more skilled than I am. I am much more bothered by the giant advantage that survivors get when they load in as a 4-man SWF on comms. That has nothing to do with skill and just stacks the deck against the killer even more.

  • Eyrie of Crows is still disabled. I don’t like the map, so I’d be fine if it stayed disabled forever, but it’s yet another example of how it takes the devs way too long to fix bugs. There just never seems to be any urgency on their end with this stuff as long as people keep playing the game and spending $$$.

I told you what to do. Go do the box. Don't hold m1 and say oh my God my bad terrible spooky solo queue teammates are so worthless when you won't just go do the thing. When you won't do objectives you are the awful teammate everyone complains about. Literally go pull your weight before you look to what everyone else is doing.

so which one of the 4 survivors are you talking to here in this hypothetical scenario? All of us? So we all listen to your advice and go get the box? Or we all assume that someone else is doing it?

    Ok, got it 👍

Literally just do the box. It's not rocket science. I escaped vs him three times last and I was playing solo.

Yes, i know how to counter Pinhead. Thanks 🙄

This is very easy when you are playing as SWF on comms. I’m totally fine playing against Pinhead and feel like he’s balanced if you can communicate with your team. The problem is that if you can’t communicate with your team, either nobody is getting the box and it’s permanent chainhunt, or everyone is going for the box and nobody is doing gens and get a 30 minute match where 2 gens get completed. That has been my experience with every single Pinhead match.

  • I play survivor about 50% of the time and almost always as solo q. I’d say about 60% of my matches are fine (reasonably competent survivors, no DC’s, no extremely unfun killer like Legion or Pinhead) and I probably escape 30-40% of the time overall. If you’re escaping much more frequently than that in solo queue, then the game is balanced too much in favor of survivor. At least in my experience, solo q is about as good as it’s ever been and feels balanced in terms of escape frequency.

  • As with any business, BHVR are allocating their resources in a way that maximizes profits. It’s not evil or nefarious, just the way business works. As long as people keep playing the game and spending money, BHVR are going to focus resources in new content (chapters and cosmetics). They will put minimal or no effort into all other things unless people stop playing the game because something is not being worked on.

Also, for the past 7 years, there has been no serious competitor for this game. So even if people are frustrated with the game, they will keep (reluctantly) playing. If a serious competitor ever arises, BHVR will have to do a lot more to put resources into things that people are asking for.

  • Yes, it seems to be worse now than it has been in a while. Especially during peak times.

I am not a programming expert but is it really that difficult to put something into the game that detects when somebody is doing something they shouldn’t be able to do, like a survivor or killer running as a certain speed, or a survivor unhooking themself on 2nd hook state (which happened to me yesterday)?

It’s super frustrating that the devs have put the burden on rooting out cheating on the players. Are most other games the same way?

You cannot stop family and friends playing together, and people are sick of rage quitting baby potatoes in solo que. Also Idk why you and others still love jumping on this 3 letter word. You do know that its possible to find a group of survivors who are not in a swf and still get stomp right?

I wish there be a day when people look at the survivors as low tier or high tier which is ofc is based off this crummy mmr system. I played against swfs that was a total clown fest easy win and gotten solo que players that make me wow should I even continue try? Why is dbd the only entitled game community that baby cries about people playing with their family and friends, is not to be called a so called party game? Evil dead and other games I play even have coms for solo que and I never hear no demon side/bad side complaining about swf.

Way to complete misrepresent what I said. I have no problem with people playing together. I have played SWF plenty of times in the past myself, and I think the game is more fun when you’re playing with friends.

However, communicating on comms gives a massive advantage to survivors. I agree that there are SWF teams that are bad, but in my experience I have found this to me more the exception than the rule. Most of the SWF teams I face are very coordinated and know exactly what gens to work on, when to go for rescues, when/where to body block, etc. A team of halfway-decent survivors coordinating on comms is extremely unfun to play against as killer because you are at such a disadvantage against an equally skilled solo q team.

I don’t want BHVR to stop people playing with friends. I want them to incorporate adjustments (nerfs) to SWF based on number of people playing together and maybe MMR level. There are a lot of ways to do it. At least give killer players a fighting chance and not make them feel like they either have to dodge lobbies or playing the sweatiest killers/builds and use the most unfun strategies possible. This would benefit everyone except the SWF players who get upset when their consistent GG EZ wins get taken away.

  • If there is another killer like Pinhead, I am quitting the game. Most miserable and broken thing ever to go against in solo q.

  • This is on the devs to fix. The very least they can do is provide us with the killer’s ping so we can dodge lobby if they have crappy internet or are using a VPN. Ideal solution would be a minimum ping requirement. If you are above the threshold (with exception of occasional instantaneous spikes) you cannot begin matchmaking process.

  • Last night I had someone unhook themself in the basement on their 2nd hook stage. That one was a bit more obvious. I don’t record my games but maybe I need to start. Although not sure it’s worth my time to go through the incredibly tedious reporting process that BHVR forces on when there is no guarantee that they will even do anything.

  • I can’t really think of any perks that are really problematic in this game anymore, on either side. Dead hard was the last one that was truly overpowered and I think it’s fine now.

The bigger problem is the fact that most perks are mediocre or just downright useless and only a handful are worth using.

  • Two of you escaped, so I’d say the matchmaking worked pretty darn well.

Edit - never mind. Match wasn’t over yet :)

The devs/mods will tell us how matchmaking is supposed to work, but we all know that it doesn’t function at all in practice based on experience. All the devs have to do is share the MMR data to prove that it works, but they never will because it will confirm what we all know from actual experience in the game.

  • I’ll see how it goes but if I’m getting these maps frequently I’m just going to take a week off. What a terrible idea by the devs to promote these maps.

  • @MrSlayer said:

Here's something I'm curious about. When there are no gens left and you get a late hook, do you defend it?

    Why wouldn’t you?

  • I play both roles about equally. I agree with others that the term “gen rushing” doesn’t make any sense. Doing gens is literally the only objective that survivors have. The real problem is a lack of secondary objectives and especially the fact that coordinated SWF teams can get gens done way too quickly (especially with some busted item/add-on/perk combos). For years BHVR have seemed to be totally fine with this imbalance because people have complained about it and pointed it out endlessly on these forums, but nothing has really been done other than make gens take a little bit longer which disproportionately hurts solo q and doesn’t really address the root problem. I’ve given up hope that BHVR will ever target SWF with nerfs to make the game more fair for killers.

My other thought on this is that I see a ton of hypocrisy on this issue coming from survivor mains who don’t play killer. They complain about killers camping and tunneling to secure kills (literally the only killer objective), and then they make fun of killers who complain about survivors doing their objective. Camping and tunneling aren’t fun for survivors, but having all gens completed by the time you have your 3rd or 4th hook is equally unfun for killers.

how is the knight map as killer I actually haven’t played it since I took a massive break

Horrendous. It’s massive, random ######### all over the place, and survivors can see you coming from three miles away. Oh, and the color accents on the scenery look like scratch marks, so that makes playing killer super fun 🙄

  • Sometimes it seems like the devs just like to troll the community. This is one of those times.

BBQ is a perk I use for mostly mobility or teleporting based killers who can use the information quickly.

Otherwise you have a plethora or other aura reading perks or add-ons that do the job better, last longer and activate in better situations.

BBQ was used for bloodpoint gain, and was realistically a sub par aura reading perk

Fully agree. Without the BP bonus, BBQ isn’t worth using over other aura-reading perks except on maybe a couple high-mobility killers

  • Killer player here (about 50% of the time). Exhaustion perks are fine. Toolboxes are mostly fine. BNPs probably need a nerf.

SWF’s continue to the be the main problem. I have no problem playing with friends (in fact I played a bit of SWF last night), but a 4-man SWF with 4 BNPs is absolutely busted and killer doesn’t stand a chance. There are plenty of ways SWF could be nerfed (great example - no more than two tools boxes for a 4-man SWF), but for years BHVR have refused to do anything to make the game more fair against coordinated teams on comms that have a massive advantage.

I can see that point. Stepping back a bit, we need to define 'ruining the game'. From the OP that's consistent DCs do to network, whereas I switched the conversation to wifi/switch specific where lag/latency/ping is the predominanting issue.

Given those differences, do you consider the lag and latency to 'ruin' the match, or only the major network issues?

(Also I'm glad we can have a genuine discussion without getting heated, I appreciate that)

Getting disconnected is definitely ruining matches for other people because either the killer gets DCd in which case the match is instantly over, or survivor gets DCd in which case the match is probably effectively over.

Lag/latency issues can make matches unfair if it’s helping killers get hits they shouldn’t or survivors are teleporting all over the place making them difficult to hit/find. I think BHVR should determine what is a minimum ping to avoid unfairness and not let you load into a match unless your ping is below that threshold.

Spoken from a place of privilege. If only everyone had equal access to the same internet quality.

OK…so because not everyone has access to reliable internet, everyone who does has to suffer with constant disconnects? If this was allowed without penalty there wouldn’t be a game at all because nobody would play.

I’d argue that the position of “I don’t care if I ruin other peoples’ games” is a far more “privileged” attitude than “I expect people to have a reliable internet connection so we can have a functioning game.”

  • I play solo q survivor so I understand the frustration. But I also play killer, so I also understand why killer needs to be buffed enough to keep up with coordinated SWF.

It still feels like SWF is the only way to consistently have fun in this game because of how broken it is. If you have a team of halfway decent loopers and can coordinate gens and hook saves, it’s mathematically impossible to lose. And this is with killer in its current state. Nerf killers anymore they’re just going to give up altogether. Going against solo q remains fine - sometimes it’s an easy match and sometimes it’s a struggle - but at least it usually feels competitive. That’s almost never the case when I face SWF teams.

The ultimate balance problem remains SWF and BHVR has refused to touch it for as long as it has existed. Rather than nerf SWF (which is entirely possible), killers get buffed which makes solo q experience worse, then kill rates get too high, survivors complain, killer gets nerfed, and the cycle continues. Everyone wonders why balance is so bad while the glaring root cause never gets touched. Start putting a handicap on 3-4 man SWF teams to compensate for their inherent advantage and then killers don’t need as many buffs to keep up.

  • So what happens to your character while waiting to reconnect? Replaced by bot? Also what happens if you decide to not rejoin? Do you get the DC penalty then?

It’s an interesting proposal but seems like it would get too complicated to manage and open to abuse. Far better solution is to expect people to fix their network issues before playing an online game. The problem should not be dumped on the devs to solve.

  • Yes, you are 100% correctly describing my position. If you have bad internet I do not want you in my game. I feel 0% bad about holding this position, and 98% of people here, including the devs, agree with me.

Way too much visual clutter. New killer was horrible to use on that map.

Not sure about the gameplay aspect... couldn't see 😛

oh great another map with random ######### everywhere. Going to be super fun for killers. Can’t wait to see how many invisible obstructions I run into with Billy or Bubba 🙄

  • If your network is crashing frequently enough to give you long DC penalties, you need to get your network fixed first before playing. If that’s not possible, you shouldn’t be playing. You are just ruining the game for others.

  • Next update will teleport killers to a “time-out chair” in the corner of the map, unable to move for 60 seconds after hooking a survivor 🙄

  • One of many ways that solo q could be brought closer to the same playing field as SWF would be to increase self healing speed for a full solo q game (or maybe at most 2 SWF playing together) and nerf healing speed for 3-4 SWF playing together. This concept could be applied to many other perks/game mechanics to balance the game better. But we all know that SWF won’t be touched because 💰💰💰

  • They are garbage and pure misery to play as killer

I don't mean to be rude, but your comment is pretty unhelpful. The statistics give an extremely broad picture that doesn't conform to the real experience of many players, and moreover a 60% winrate doesn't even mean 'playing this killer means you will win 60% of your matches'. How you're doing as a Killer has no bearing on how I'm doing as a Killer since we're different people with different experiences. I think you've also missed that this is a recent phenomenon for me. I was doing fine until like a week ago when suddenly everything started going completely terribly. Other people have complained about wonky MMR lately, so I'm not the only one having a weird time.

The 60% kill rate in top 5% MMR is people who play this game 16 hours a day and does not represent what you should expect if you are a casual player. Don’t let people make you think that you are the problem if you’re not playing up to that standard. Most of us here just want a fair, fun match and not a brutal sweat fest every time we play.

You’re probably, for whatever reason, getting matched against a lot higher level players and more SWF teams. Crappy matchmaking and unfair advantage of SWF is to blame, not you.

  • Even if OP was exaggerating and it was 4 minutes instead of 2 minutes - ######### are you supposed to do? The usual “just patrol gens” and “git gud” advice probably isn’t going to help much here.

  • @IHSGames said:

Killers always talk about how Genrushing is bad but never wonder why genrushing is such a prominent thing in the first place? Genrushing is really the only playstyle that survivors can use thats effective/actually see some use for.

BVHR has this tendency to nerf things (instead of dealing with the fudemental issue of why its problamatic) without seeing the macro-level ripple effect it has on playstyles of the game. For example, the Sabo playstyle years back was OP and problamatic, but due to them nerfing it, Sabo builds are just not effective to pull off no more. Unless you have a full-stack Sabo build, Saboing hooks take too long. The killer can easily see you Sabo-ing and move on to the next hook making your play useless. And even then, if you do Sabo, hooks are so close to each other that youll need a full squad strategicly ready to sabo all nearby hooks. Most players are Solos so a build like that is uneffective.

With the playstyle of killers being camping and tunneling, A surge of Anti-Loop killers and along with a few chase centered perks for survivor such as Dead-Hard getting nerfed, even chases aren't all that effective. Killers know not to chase the survivor with decent looping skills so most killers dont commit to chase and instead grab the weak link and either camp or tunnel them. So why bring chase centered perks when you can genrush while the killer is camping/tunneling since its the only thing you can do that is somewhat effective.

Along with healing getting nerfed, survivors are less likely to go for more risky plays because one hit of sloppy or any anti-healing perk can cost your team simply because they have to heal you for longer than before. So now survivors have to play effectively since risky plays are heavily punished.

The only way to fix Genrushing is to buff items and perks to allow for various different playstyles to be just as effective as genrushing so survivors wont have to genrush as their only option. This will also shake up the meta as now each survivor will have different playstyles to accomidate anything else besides genrushing.

I have no problem with “genrushing” and I think it’s a pretty stupid thing to begin with. This is literally the only objective that survivors have, and there’s nothing to incentivize them to do anything else. Nobody should be complaining about survivors doing their only objective.

In the same way, nobody should be complaining about killers doing their only objective by constantly calling it “camping” and “tunneling”.

  • @Veroles said:

Personally, I have nothing against complaint posts/threads. I think it's pretty important when people say what's bothering them. What makes it mostly useless is that a lot of the time there isn't even an idea how it could run better overall. It's like real life. If I complain about something, but only complain and nothing more, nothing will change, because how can anything change if you have no vision how it could go better overall?

I feel that the state of the game could be a lot worse than it actually is, but there are always a lot of reasons you can find that affect your enjoyment of the game. This will always be the case, because both roles are entirely different.

Sometimes you have to test things for a while to see the end result, and being afraid of trying something new doesn't help.

Because of that, I have due respect for the developers, because keeping such a game in a state acceptable to most players is a new master's challenge every time and i am in a way glad that they are not that scared testing things out for a while.

Agree. Devs do read the forums and they need to know the common things that frustrate players.

The main problem is trying to make SBMM in a game that doesn't have the playerbase for it. If there was actually 4 survivors per killer than sure but we all know that will never be the case. And well SBMM in a game which is largely determined by RNG.

100% this. The player base isn’t big enough for quick and fair matchmaking. Also, during peak times, nobody wants to play killer because they’re probably going to get matched against a 4-man SWF. So even though a lot of people will be playing during peak times, there is a huge deficit of killers, so killer will just get thrown in with next group waiting regardless of MMR scores.

If you’re all ok with 15+ minute queue times, then the matchmaking could be a bit more fair.

The sheer power of Eruption, CoB, Overcharge and PR/DL.

Undeniably the strongest Killer has ever been and Killers still decided they'd rather go crazy with the tunneling.

I don’t think any of those perks in their former states actually incentivized not camping/tunneling though. They just made those tactics less necessary. So when you say that the carrot approach has been tried already, I don’t agree with that other than old BBQ. A real carrot would be something like if you hook somebody for the first time then the gen with most progress explodes and regresses 10% or something like that. I think there are a lot of creative ways that could be used to reward killers for leaving hooks or downing/hooking other survivors.

I’ve said this many times before, but I really feel that the core issue that is not being addressed is how unfair SWF on comms is at mid to high levels and this is why killers play the way they do. There will always be those sociopaths that have fun making other people miserable no matter what, and you’re never going to be able to do anything about that. But there are plenty of ways to make SWF less oppressive which I really believe would make killers feel like they don’t have to camp and tunnel as much to win. Unfortunately this is never going to happen because BHVR are worried about losing a lot of players if they do anything to handicap SWF teams.

  • @Pulsar said:

oh boy, the whole tunneling gens thing again. That's just extremely dumb, imo, so I'm gonna ignore that.

They aren't considered bad per se, just very unfun and unintuitive to play against. A lot of players crutch on these tactics to win when their macro gameplay is lacking. The skill required to tunnel someone is MUCH less than the skill required to make tunneling a losing strategy, same with camping. A lot of Killer powers also synergize well with those strategies making them even more difficult to counter and even more effective.

You, once again, mention the carrot and the stick approach. We have tried the carrot, it didn't work. People kept tunneling and camping because it was easy and effective, not because they had to tunnel to win. Until those two aren't the easiest way to win, they'll continue to stick around.

What were the “carrots” that were tried? Other than old BBQ, I can’t think of anything in the game that incentivized killers to not camp or tunnel. And I wouldn’t say old BBQ didn’t work in incentivizing killers to not camp/tunnel. I actually thought it was fairly effective.

  • Can we at least keep this game a tiny bit scary for survivors to play?

DBD the only game where someone says "don't play to win." So you're supposed to play to lose right? That's a lot of fun.

I think some people have this attitude, yes. Especially people who don’t play killer. They forget that there is a person behind the killer who is also playing to right and has just as much right to do so as the survivors.

I think this really all comes down to the fact that many survivor main players don’t believe that anything they do in the game to gain an advantage like communicate on comms or abuse broken loops are unfun or unfair, while killer strategies like camping and tunneling are unfun and unfair. So far I have not seen any convincing arguments why it’s ok for survivors to use every possible edge to win but it’s not ok for killers to do the same.

  • @AmpersandUnderscore said:

We have carrots galore in the past year. 6.1 gave 10 seconds to gens, mini pop on kick, tier 1 brutal strength, 2 permanent stacks of stbfl, entirely free as base kit buffs.

Dead Hard got nerfed twice, DS got deleted, circle of healing is all but gone too.

Killers used every single one of those buffs to camp, tunnel, and hold 3 gens for nearly a year.

Carrots don't work without directly making camping and tunneling less efficient in some way, plain and simple.

I wouldn’t consider anything you mentioned above as “carrots” to incentivize killers to not tunnel or camp. Those were all things meant to shift the overall kill rates up because they had fallen too low in the devs’ opinion. While they didn’t incentivize playing more “fair”, they certainly did make it easier for killers to get downs more quickly and thus maybe have to rely less on camping and tunneling in certain matches.

The problem is that it wasn’t nearly enough for killers, especially mid-to-low tiers one, to compete against coordinated SWF. I play killer about 50% of the time and I think going against solo q is very fair and sometimes too easy. SWF is a whole different story. If survivors are playing efficiently (staying on gens, not making huge mistakes) it’s literally not possible to get a kill before all the gens are done unless you focus on getting one survivor out as quickly as possible.

But instead of BHVR addressing the real problem which is the unfair advantage that SWF has, they punish only ways that killers have to deal with it. Meanwhile, solo q survivors remain understandably frustrated that killers continue to camping and tunnel. Everyone knows what the core problem is but nobody wants to actually deal with it.

  • Keep sticking with it. You’ll get better. These have been my key learnings in my experience playing killer:

    1. The matchmaking system does not work. It might as well not exist. every match I get is completely random in terms of skill level and play time of the other players that load in.
    2. The game is heavily, heavily balanced in favor of 3/4-man SWF squads. Everyone knows this, and those who say otherwise are not being honest. It just takes simple math to understand this. A coordinated team on comms who have halfway-competent loopers will get all the gens done by around your third hook +/- a hook unless they make huge mistakes or purposely screw around. In those types of matches, you will need to camp and tunnel to at least some extent to have chance. But due to survivor whining, BHVR are slowly eliminating your ability to use these tactics in matches that require it.
    3. You’ll have much more fun against solo q. The game feels much more balanced and I enjoy almost all my matches against solo q. I’m fine getting beat by a team that has some really good loopers as long as I know the deck wasn’t stacked against me because the team can constantly call out my location to each other or tell each other who should work on gens and who should go for body blocks/flashlight saves/hook rescues. Just try to dodge 3/4-man SWF if you can
    4. Play however you want to play. Don’t feel bad about camping or tunneling if the survivors are clearly going to sweat as hard as they can and give you a really tough match. You have just as much right to try hard to win as they do.
    5. Killer is by far the more difficult role unless you’re playing against potatoes. You’ll see a lot of complaining on the forums from survivors about how hard playing survivor is, but they rarely or never play killer. Sure, solo queue can be bad, but when I play solo queue with a halfway decent team I usually see 3 or 4 escapes. 3K or 4K matches only happen if survivors make a lot of mistakes or are just not good at looping and making chases last for more than 20 seconds
‹ 1 2 3 … 30
