The matchmaking is not based on grades or prestige, it's based on the MMR, which is hidden.
Two of you escaped, so I’d say the matchmaking worked pretty darn well.

The devs/mods will tell us how matchmaking is supposed to work, but we all know that it doesn’t function at all in practice based on experience. All the devs have to do is share the MMR data to prove that it works, but they never will because it will confirm what we all know from actual experience in the game.
It's a well known fact that the matchmaking doesn't work well. Even a lot of high profile killer main streamers have said as much. I've seen people like Otz and Tofu get matched with survivors who have 50 hours. Absolutely no way people like this are high MMR. You can also cheese the system by dodging lobbies until you get easier games. If I am on a high prestige survivor then it's not uncommon for me to see 4-5 dodges before I get a killer who actually stays. My assumption is there are problems with the backfill and at certain times of day there just aren't enough people to fill games with players who are at the same MMR.
