  • I have rules for unhooking.

    • I will make every effort to unhook a survivor that is playing in a manner that is helpful to the team accomplishing the goal of escaping as long as they aren't being camped.
    • Under most circumstances I will not attempt to unhook a survivor that is not playing in a manner helpful to the team accomplishing the goal of escaping.
    • I'm not going to attempt to unhook a survivor that is being camped because it accomplishes nothing for me to get downed and now we have 2 survivor not doing objectives instead of 1
    • Any survivor that I see risking others with unnecessary unsafe hook removals will not get unhooked by me. I don't care if they are hanging right next to an open gate and I have plenty of time to unhook them. I will happily run right by that person without slowing down.

But he would have 4k'd and he didn't because of "hatch tech". Being robbed of 2 kills is not killer entitlement. The fact that so many killers complain about this and nothing has been done about it shows that the devs are survivor sided. If there's a game breaking bug or feature that hurts survivors, it's fixed within the month and bans are given out to killers who abuse it.

In this scenario the survivors completed 90% of their objectives before the killer was able to take a single one of them down. They did exactly what they were supposed to do. The killer had an ability activate at that point that still gave him the opportunity for a 4k despite being outplayed to that point. As a matter of fact if a survivor had not abused the hatch mechanic he likely would have gotten a 4k.

In other words the specific ability to exploit the hatch mechanic is survivor sided. At the same time the ability to have a perk activate that gives a killer the potential to get a 4k after being outplayed the whole match is killer sided.

All I am doing is pointing out I could use the same scenario and make an argument that the game is survivor sided one hand and killer sided on the other.

  • Translation: "I got outplayed for the majority of the match and still managed to get 3 kills. However, since it wasn't 4 kills the game is survivor sided. "

There are arguments that can be made saying the game is survivor sided. This isn't one of those arguments.

  • Agreed. As a survivor you definitely have to be on your game when you play against Freddy. I don't mind that. A challenge is fun as long as it isn't the same challenge repeatedly. More variety would be great.

  • @FichteHiro said:

Yeah, it is kinda boring but I understand why people only play certain Killers at Red Ranks. With the excessively fast Gen speed, playing a non-viable killer will most likely result in a 4-man escape, which you don't want. So Killers normally play Nurse, Spirit, Freddy and Billy.

I think the Devs did say they were thinking about adding some rank rewards, am not sure though.

I do understand why they do it. The four you mentioned are definitely about the only 4 I ever see. I just see Freddy the overwhelming majority of the time. I saw Deathslinger a few times the first day, and barely since then. Maybe the reason I see Freddy so much is he's the best on PS4. I don't know since I don't play killer. All I know is I'm seriously giving thought to depiping so I get some more variety.

I mainly get either doctor or spirit nearly every single match.

I got doctor for awhile right after they buffed him recently. I've pretty much stopped getting him at this point. Spirit is one of the few others I get. Just not nearly as often as Freddy.

  • I prefer stealth partly because I don't loop well. Probably the biggest reason can be blamed on the Batman Arkham series of games. I loved every challenge and mission where you had to go unnoticed. There was something about the challenge of accomplishing an objective while remaining stealth that I seriously enjoyed, and it has carried over into other games I play. I have a blast being able to sneak around without the killer seeing me. If I manage to escape and never got chased it's like a double victory.

Don't get me wrong. I still do gens. I usually do at least 2 by myself. I unhook. At least once and sometimes several times in a match. You will get time to get away and heal if I unhook you. I'm not going to sacrifice you or me for cheap bloodpoints by removing you when it isn't safe. I also usually heal people 2 or 3 times per match. I just don't do hardly any of it when the killer is near.

  • @avilmask said:

All killers you've listed are licensed and must be bought with real currency, so it's not strange that newbies never play them. Buying killers with ingame currency isn't quite cheap as well, and starting choice of simple killers is pretty limited. But I would expect a lot of Wraiths (OMG OP permanent invisibility1), not Huntresses.

That is a great point. Missed that altogether. Makes a lot of sense.

  • @TheLastGreatStar said:

I do remember facing a lot of Huntress players when I first started playing this game, but that was back in early 2017. If I was to hazard a guess, I’d say the fact she can throw hatchets probably seems really powerful to new players? Because on paper, it does sound great.

You make a good point. It's been a long time for me too. I could have faced a lot of Huntress and just not remember it. I'm just watching him play and I'm getting tired of seeing Huntress.

  • I'd love to see something where I can trade in the huge amounts of items from bloodwebs that I will never use. I would be thrilled to thin out my inventory to get a few things I would actually use vs having multiple pages worth of items that are 100% useless to me.

Just had a match as michael with wallhack addons some hours before. After i killed the first one, who only hide the whole time he also send me salty messages that it was his teammates fault and even tried to spot them for me. Because he did that i let his mates escape then he startet to say that he wish that i will die. :(

    Sorry for bad grammar

I understood perfectly. I'm not surprised. I only play as survivor, but survivors are the most ridiculous by far

  • Played a match the other day where I pulled this guy off the hook twice, healed him both times, and then when he was being chased for the third time I intentionally ran in front of the killer taking a hit trying to protect him. It didn't work. The killer ignored me and went after him. Just a few second after he died he has sent me a message telling me I was the worst survivor he had ever seen.

He either thought it was hilarious to try to bait me for an argument after I saved him so many times or he was just flat out delusional. I don't know which it was, but I honestly think most people that send angry messages after a match fall into one of those 2 categories.

  • When I'm playing survivor and get close to a gate that was only 99'd it's going to be 100 real quick. I've seen too many times where you end up with 2 or 3 survivors dead because someone 99'd a gate trying to save one person. The couple of seconds it takes to run beside the gate, hit that last 1 percent, and then get out as opposed to being able to run straight out can make all the difference.

  • Played a match a few minutes ago with a rank 1 killer and the lowest rank rank survivor was a 10. There was actually a rank 17 survivor in the match.

  • Considering the way so many people treat each other I'm going with this one:

I've been working on leveling up Kate to give me a break from when I get tunneled to hell on Claudette. It's sucks. I enjoy playing her so much and I'm the type of nerd that gets attached to characters more for their story than skill set. I'm usually floating between rank 3-5 which is cool. I don't mind deranking. I do mind not being able to play a game due to character choice.

It sucks. I mean I can understand killers not liking Claudette for that reason. The irony is I had never even really thought about playing Claudette that way, but it didn't matter. The fact I was using her was enough to cause me to get tunneled. At the same time I was at least glad I figured it out. It got frustrating trying to figure out why killers would ignore everyone else at the start of a match and focus on only me until I was dead.

  • The first time I played this game I chose Claudette because I thought the self-heal perk would be invaluable. Don't even use it now, but at the time that was my one and only criteria for picking Claudette. I worked extremely hard to get better at this game. I wanted to compete at the highest level I could. Claudette was my character that had all the perks.

About the time I became a level 10 survivor I started noticing I was escaping a lot less, and dying a lot quicker on average. At first I just attributed it to the fact I was playing against better killers. I thought it would improve. It didn't. That is when I found this forum. I was desperately searching for what mistake(s) I was making.

I did a lot of reading at first. Didn't even sign up. Just read. What I started noticing reading through the threads was a lot of killers talking about the fact they will tunnel Claudettes immediately because of their blending ability. As I read more and more here on the forums I realized that is exactly what was happening with me. I played a few weeks longer with Claudette. I even changed her outfit to something more bright. That didn't matter. What I had read here on the forums was proving to be true. The mistake I was making was playing with Claudette. I decided to start playing with Nea even though she didn't have the perks I was used to using because I had only leveled her up enough to get urban evasion teachable at one point. So I was playing completely out of my comfort zone, but thought I would give it a try.

Immediately I began to escape more often. I wasn't dying 2 minutes into matches very often. My rank started getting better again. I was nearly to the point of no longer playing this game when I was playing as a Claudette rank 10 or lower. After switching it became much more fun again. I've played long enough now I have several survivors leveled up with all the perks I want and I go back and forth between them for a little variety. But if you want to significantly lower your risk of being tunneled don't use Claudette.

I dunno. Adds an element of chaos to leaving gens. You're not guaranteed to walk away clean. Some skillchecks are one after another.

Besides that, you sure Huntresses Lullaby wasn't in effect?

I get the chaos thought. This happens frequently, not just with Lullaby. As for the chaos thing though I personally could do without it. I will never approve of negative consequences for a faulty game mechanic.

I've never had this happen before, but I also haven't played a lot of survivor since dedicated servers were launched because it's a dreadful experience all around.

For those of us that do it's extremely frustrating. The thing is not only have they not done anything about it, but I have seen posts like this on this forum more than once and they simply ignore it. It's another one of those areas they not only refuse to fix, but won't even respond to posts about it.

  • @preston159 said:

In my opinion, they should work like Overcharge skillchecks, where you have a chance to do the skillcheck even though you aren't doing the action anymore. But it's been the same way for 4 years, it isn't likely they'll do anything about it.

I think you are right on both points. It gets really frustrating sometimes. In a match last night where an injured survivor ran up while working on the last gen. It was just about done, but I wanted to heal them before I finished the gen so we both got a chance to escape. I stood up to heal them and got one of those skill checks. Of course that meant I didn't get the chance to heal them or to do the gen because the killer was alerted to where I was at.

  • As a survivor main I despise being stuck with another survivor that just wants to immerse and do nothing regardless of what point in the match they do it. While it most definitely happens at times I don't think that is always what's happening in these situations.

If I'm in a match with 2 survivors that decided to play stupid and got killed really quickly that obviously isn't the killers fault. At the same time it isn't my fault either as one of the remaining survivors. If there are still several generators left and only 2 survivors my best strategy is to become as immersive as possible while trying to complete generators. At that point if the killer sees me they can afford to concentrate on me exclusively because their need to pressure gens went down significantly. So I am going to do everything I can to not be seen.

That means I am going to be slow and deliberate. I am not going to do anything to intentionally give away my location. I'm likely going to crouch as I move around. In those situations I am still trying to get gens done. It's just hard to do, but I'm not gonna give up in that situation anymore than I expect the killer to do so.

  • Tunneling sucks. However, that doesn't mean it isn't a legit strategy. The thing about tunneling is survivors are the reason it's a legit strategy. The majority of survivors are either unwilling to wait until it's safe to unhook or lack the sense necessary to know when it's safe to unhook. The bottom line is an unsafe hook removal results in a negative towards accomplishing objectives.

The unhooked survivor is likely going to get downed again without doing anything, and the survivor that unhooked them wasted time they could have been working towards objectives.

It may sound harsh, but there are times when the best play for the team is to leave a survivor on the hook until it's safe to unhook them, or at the very least wait until they are close to dying if the killer won't get far enough away. That allows the other survivors to actually work towards goals instead of having 2 (the hooked and the unhooker) that got nothing accomplished because an unsafe hook removal.

As a survivor main I HATE being tunneled. I have just realized I can't be upset with a killer about it because it's the survivors on my team that made it possible.

  • I am in the same boat as you. I don't loop particularly well. I should say I suck at it. I am much better at stealth.

I would say your best stealth build is going to be one that comes from loads of experimentation. I have tried stealth builds I saw on youtube videos, websites, here on the forum, on the steam forums and I never quite found one that worked for me. Finally I just started experimenting. I came across a build where I started escaping more, getting more points every match, and my rank has been getting consistently better ever since. I haven't seen my particular build recommended anywhere. I use:

    • Spine Chill - for me it's invaluable to know when the killer is getting close.
    • Urban Evasion - when Spine Chill lights up I am able to get away while staying crouched at full walking speed. More often than not I am able to get away without being seen as I don't have to run and leave scratch marks
    • Calm Spirit - I don't disturb crows. When I do need to run not having crows constantly chirping makes me fairly silent. Recently with lots of people playing doc because of the rework it's been helpful there. Doc can't make me scream with it.
    • Iron Will - obviously not making noise while injured is invaluable if you don't want to be found by the killer

I found certain perks I liked a lot and worked well for me, but didn't work well in conjunction with others. The ones I use now just seem to work best together for me personally. It just takes finding the combination that makes a difference for you.

  • To those debating the merits of certain perks.... Again, we all have our opinions about certain things in the game. We may feel this perk, that perk, or this item, that item or whatever shouldn't be in the game. We may think a certain perk is too strong, too weak, or just right. Those are discussion worth having. They are discussions you see frequently on these forums. However, I intentionally didn't bring those things into it though because that is irrelevant to the point I was making. My 2 points were:

    1) Someone utilizing a tool they have available doesn't make them a trash player because you personally don't like it.

    2) The fact you don't like a particular tool someone uses doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to use it.

  • The comments you are getting are a perfect example of your point. You could make a post on this forum saying grass is green without someone finding a reason to be terribly offended.

  • @Beardedragon said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1126876#Comment_1126876

yea. i mean it sounds like not all people see all ends of the spectrum here.

im not even asking for stealthy players being granted more points than distractors or even taking points for those that distracts and swarms. both people are important, im just asking that stealthy players are also granted some value BP wise so that being stealthy is also a viable way to get BPs.

because the end of the day is, you NEED someone to be stealthy to continuously do generators. but that guy might not cash in a very large sum of BPs compared to basically everyone else.

I agree. If there is one thing I would change about the way bloodpoints are awarded it would be increasing the amount you get for working on gens. It is the objective after all. As it stands now though you can get a lot more bloodpoints unhooking and healing. That's why so many survivors don't play to escape. They play to unhook and heal as much as possible because they get more points. I personally think more bloodpoints for gens would entice people to actually try to complete the objective instead of only hook farming with the killer.

  • For me it was a game where I was still a noob. This was back before the EGC and hatch changes. I managed to be the last survivor. There was still 1 generator to be done. All the remaining gens as well as the hatch were in the same area. The killer was camped out on the hatch.

I kept trying to do a gen and couldn't make any progress before the killer would run me off. I was determined to make him chase me and give him the slip to make the hatch. He wouldn't stray far enough from the hatch to give me that opportunity. The whole time he is sending me messages telling me how I may as well just surrender because he will wait me out.

I managed to make a mistake and get downed. He hung me right next to the hatch and then backed off several meters. He would look at me and teabag a little. Then he would turn around with his back to me.

One of the times he turned around I managed to hit that 4% and got off the hook. Landed right on top of the hatch. Opened it and escaped. It was the sweetest victory I have had playing this game. That match must have lasted 45 minutes. He messaged me after the match accusing me of cheating and telling me he was going to report me. I ignored him and he hated it.

Why do you assume people that are stealthy play solo and arent team players? players that are stealthy dont necessarily let people stay on hooks. Being stealthy doesnt mean you dont sprint, it simply means you do what you can to avoid being seen by the killer, unless you have to like taking protection hits. Many survivors dont give a flying ######### they just swarm the killer because they can. and the fact that they can, is super sad. the killer has no power.

And also why is this some sort of Chased vs stealthy guys? its not about whether you shouldnt get points for being chased, there should just ALSO be given adequate points to those that stay stealthy and do gens.

if everyone stays hidden, then you can do many gens without losing anyone. thats good too. its effective in the early game. early game dont even need a distraction

Most people assume the way they play is the right way and if you don't play like them you are playing wrong and useless. I'm a stealthy player. It's funny how many times I have a game where I did 2 or 3 gens by myself, performed 3 or 4 safe hook removals, healed several people, and maybe even knocked out a hex totem only to get messages from other survivors afterwards that I'm a trash player. Apparently I have to hook farm with the killer, not work on gens, and die to be a good player according to most of the survivors that send me messages.

Yep, I’m not even talking being GOOD at the game. Just playing intelligently and using basic strategy and common sense would result in 3-4 escapes every game. But you get these survivors who hide in a locker or crouch behind bushes whenever they hear the faintest heartbeat. Three minute chase against the killer and zero gens get done, then we still get owned by NOED at the end so they weren’t doing totems either... like #########

100% agree. That's why I very rarely agree with any post on this forum where survivors are asking for killer nerfs. Nerfing killers because survivors play stupid shouldn't happen.

  • I have 2 major issues with the game.

    1) Dedicated servers - my experience with everything from wait times to slight lags that make great skill checks much harder has been worse since the introduction of dedicated servers. I don't expect anything to be done about this because I honestly don't think BHVR cares at all about it

    2) Survivors - I say that as a survivor main. It seems there are a lot of survivors that aren't even trying to win. If the majority of survivor in matches with me are trying to win they lack the ability to think critically enough to understand how counterproductive their actions are to winning. Some of the ones I see talked about on here all the time like unsafe hook removals that lead to nothing more than hook farming, or trying to heal a slugged teammate while the killer is standing right there. There are also the less talked about ones like survivors that don't realize running the killer to team mates that are working on a generator is bad strategy for everyone including their own self.

  • You're absolutely right. I really don't get why this is so hard for most survivors to understand. I say it all the time though. IF, and that's a big if, even 50% of survivor would learn to play using anything resembling an intelligent strategy BHVR would have to make radical changes to this game to make it even close to balanced. I say that as a survivor main too.

  • @kcwolf1975 said:

It does seem that the majority of toxic messages come from the survivors. I have never seen an "EZ, baby survivor" and yet just yesterday i got something like that from a survivor while playing killer.

The sad thing is that I am a rank 11 killer and was matched against 2 rank 1's and 2 rank 2's. I didn't even think i did that bad, i hooked everyone for my BBQ stacks, killed one, and two of them escaped with a key while I was closing in on them. Why would someone gloat about that?

I play both sides and I totally understand why there are not as many people wanting to play killer anymore. It is sad, because I love this game and I don't want to see it die anytime soon.

I'm a survivor main and I will readily admit that 90% of those that play survivor are either toxic to the game with their attitudes or with their inability to think strategically and likely many are both.

  • As a survivor main I have no problem saying that survivors are far far far more toxic than killers and it isn't even close.

"have to resort to slugging to get kills"

As if they cant get kills normally, and have to resort to this.

Instead of the fact that they played what was dealt at the moment. It's like saying "survivors cant loop and have to resort to healing each other".

The words themselves arent the issue, the context and implication is.

I'm sorry if what I says offends you, maybe you shouldnt let things bother you so much? Or not take it so personally?

I bet you're the kind of person who has to make a witty last remark and try to get someone to agree with you to feel like you're right, right?

Even though others read what I wrote and understood it completely different you were the only one that was able to use your mind reading skills to delve deeper. I bow in deference to your ability to use words on a screen to read the mind of the person that posted them to know what they really meant. You nailed me. Good job.

Actually it probably means the exact opposite of you being good--it probably means instead you are trash. I play killers very rarely and just for the BP for the dallies. I bring in NOED. I at times will get a kill or two...maybe even three, but I'd never taunt anyone as a killer because I am pure trash (actually I'd need to get a bit better to even reach the level of trash)...now as a survivor...that might be a different story. I have been taunted by survivors though...typically someone I killed using NOED.

I think you are right on that. For me the definition of a good player isn't even necessarily whether or not you have attained a level 1 ranking. It's more about being well rounded. For example. If a survivor takes a key into every match and then runs around hiding in lockers until the hatch is available they might be really effective, but I wouldn't call them good. If keys were suddenly taken away they would basically be a noob again.

  • @MiniPixels said:

Gotta admit though, its really made me not want to play killer (Obviously, a death threat didn't help). It's already bad enough with the recent changes. I'm just tired of entitled survivors thinking they deserve to escape each match now. A mentality that is only going to get worse with how quickly matches are going.

I can understand. As a survivor main I think 90% of the issues in this game come from the survivor side. Makes me wish I enjoyed playing killer, but I've tried several times and just hated it. Loved playing survivor from the start. Regardless, the biggest issue in this game is that the majority of survivors have absolutely zero comprehension of how to play strategically. Then they want to blame killers for their mistakes.

I've said it before, but I mean it. If the majority of survivors in this game were to start playing the game intelligently BHVR would have to provide a lot of killer buffs to maintain anything close to balance. Unfortunately, what we have now are survivors that want BHVR to change the game to accommodate the fact they play incompetently. Which is another of the ways people are delusional when playing this game.

Just had this happen to me tonight but on the opposite end. I was a killer with 3-gens (nearly 4) done against me and only a few hooks to my name. I started to slug because they were huddled together and managed to wrangle a 4k with it. Didn't even do full 4-man slug either; I hooked on the 3rd slug giving the last guy time to get someone up and then rinse and repeated slugging/hooking until they were all dead.

Had two people from the match message me after saying I didn't play fair and was a bad killer. Honestly, they were a pretty good group so it was disappointing seeing them mouth off after losing. Made me chuckle at the same time though as I haven't had hate mail in a while.

That's the thing.... As a survivor main I get far more nasty messages from survivors pissed off that I didn't do something the way they think I should have done it. I rarely get a message from killers at all other than an occasional gg. I don't think I have ever sent a killer a salty message after a match. I was just shocked this killer sent this particular message. It was LOOOONG, and the bragging was over the top.

Exactly. There are so many legit strategies in this game (on both sides) that take little to no skill. There's nothing wrong with utilizing them, but to presume utilizing such a strategy makes you a "good player" is ridiculous. They might even make you effective, but effective doesn't necessarily equate to good.

That they do. I just found his arrogance totally unwarranted in that situation.

Mind blown here, does that mean you can use the gate spawns to predict the outcome of the match and the hatch spawn? I need to start scoping out exit gates earlier lol

No. Not what I'm saying. If that's the way it sounds it was just badly worded

so pretty much every game. the exit gates always spawn close together. really the only maps where the gates are far apart are the game, lery's and hawkins

They are close most of the time. Occasionally though, they are REALLY close. Had one earlier where the killer stood between the two gates and when you approached either one you were in the terror radius. That's the situation I would use a key if I had one. Being able to open the gate in that situation goes from being challenging to being impossible.

maybe i am reading this wrong? but the exit gates spawn at the start of the match. the amount of survivors left at the end isn't going to effect where they are. from my experience, the gates spawn close in every map with the exception of a couple. eg the game, hawkins, lery's.

I wasn't trying to say they weren't there before the end of the match. I realize they are there from the start. And yes they are fairly close together the majority of the time. There are those times though when they are REALLY close. Had a game earlier where gates were so close the killer stood between them and you were in his terror radius no matter which gate you went too. Those are the games I will use a key if I have one. As I said in my original comment I like having a challenge to open a gate. That's fun. But when the gates are so close together that challenging changes to impossible I will use a key if I have it.

  • I like keys, but I think they should only be able to be used under certain circumstances.

    For example:

If I'm in a match where the killer has closed the hatch and the gates have powered up, but they are so close to each other that there is no chance I am going to be able to get either of them open I will happily use a key if I have one. If I think I have even a small chance of getting one of the doors open I would much rather try to do that for the challenge, but I have no problem whatsoever using a key if the game is going to put the gates so close together that my chances of opening one went from challenging to impossible.

There may be other circumstances too, but that's the one where I occasionally use a key.

  • The thing I've noticed is if there are 2 or more survivors still alive when the gates activate it's highly likely there will be a pretty decent amount of distance between them and the hatch will likely be a decent amount of distance from either. However, if there is only 1 survivor alive when the gates activate the chances are extremely high the gates are gonna be within a few meters of each other and the hatch is probably going to be within a few meters of one of the gates.

I've started carrying keys into a lot of my matches for just that reason. I don't even attempt to use them unless I run into that exact situation. If I'm the last survivor, the killer has closed the hatch and the doors have spawned so close together that there is no chance I'm going to be able to get one open you better believe I'm gonna use that key.

If the doors spawn far enough apart that I at least have a chance to get one open I will give it a shot and either escape through the door or get killed. It's only those times when the doors are way too close together that I use a key.

  • I have been bouncing back and forth between rank 10 and rank 11 survivor since the reset. The amount of times I have been in matches where all 3 of the other survivors have been dead within the first 3 minutes is unreal. From what I am told when you get to red rank survivors you actually run into smart survivors. All I can say for sure is that the majority of survivors around rank 10 play with absolutely no strategy whatsoever. Sometimes I swear they are competing to see who can die the fastest.
