They don't have an actual reason they can say that won't get them in trouble with the forum's rules lol
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2940327#Comment_2940327
First of all, it's not a retcon, David was never said to be straight. Before you bring up the girlfriend point, no that does not make someone straight. People learn stuff about themselves later in life, or need to hide their status from bigoted people (eg, family/neighbors).
Second of all, sexuality/gender is irrelevant to the trials, but that's an irrelevant argument. Games aren't only about in-game content. It's representation for an under-represented stigmatized minority in real life. That automatically trumps it. Why does there need to be a reason to be anything? People are not LGBT for some kind of plot reason. There's no such thing as forced inclusion. LGBT+ people exist, so LGBT+ inclusion makes sense. It does not have to be related to the story or the gameplay. That logic is stupid. What, does there have to be a reason for straight or cisgender characters to exist? lmao.
Third, it's literally their fault if anyone assumed anything that wasn't confirmed about him. He was never ever confirmed to be straight. People upset over that can get over it. This is like saying it makes sense to get upset that you got some stranger's name wrong when it was never ever said. If people didn't realize their headcanons were only ever headcanons, that is literally on them.
Of course it's going to be a "surprise" when it hasn't been done in five years of this game's lifespan. But people who have an issue with it being added need to get over themselves.
It’s just so funny how they even refuse to acknowledge my direct question regarding Wraith being retroactively ‚changed‘ to like women in a similar way they claim David was changed.

@Ryuhi said:
I think this kinda boils down to the issue of retroactively giving/expanding on established character lore. retcons-rewrites-etc always run into that kind of issue, and some people feel like the content's nature makes it feel like its inherently protected from criticism.
Personally, I don't care about the topic in regards to anyone in the fog. Some do, some don't. People on the internet (and especially in this community) absolutely love to assume the worst from people that don't agree with them, while topics like this make some people put a lot more personal stake into their stance (understandably.)
The reason I personally feel it could have been handled better is because of the original point: Its not that they didn't put effort into it (they clearly did) nor that they did any research or care into it being a first step in representation (they clearly did,) but that for some it feels almost like a bait and switch.
For one, sexuality has absolutely zero impact on the trials, nor should it. I'm reminded of Rogue Legacy where there are various genetic and hereditary traits you can take that have various impacts on gameplay, then one of them is just being gay/lesbian. In a game where even your character's height or being farsighted are permutations that can affect various aspects of the game, being gay affects... nothing. Just your spouse's gender in the ending, thats it. I thought that was an outstanding way of handling it, especially because it inherently fortified the aspect that it makes absolutely zero difference to the player what your character's orientation is outside of what meaning you, yourself, provide.
With a situation like David, after all the years of the game, cosmetics, jokes in the community, headcanons people have been building over the years, it starts to feel like it was decided for the player. In the above example from Rogue Legacy, the impact would be completely different if being gay was something that was put on the player without them knowing. You know you are choosing it when you do, and thus, the impact is direct and intentional. Inclusion is important, and you'll rarely find good faith arguments that claim its not in this case. However, if it was something that was randomly or arbitrarily decided for you, you can absolutely bet there would have been controversy over how it was handled, which would lead to a similar situation like this. Sexuality is not a good topic to surprise people with in video games (or even stories in general) where it is both completely irrelevant and completely unrelated to said game or story.
In this case, again, they put a lot of work and effort into that part of the situation. This wasn't some half assed "throw a pride flag on his back and pump out more cosmetics for pride month" situation. It WAS, however, one that fell victim to a discordance in its reception due to the nature of its elements. I've heard the "we didn't want to make them paid dlc" argument, but the long and short of the matter is that the game has, for years, been structured around a "build your own headcanon" stance due to how barebones the lore started, while being slowly "caught up" with each subsequent tome. That in itself will always make controversial topics create discordance on some level. Especially when it might come off as unrelated to what was before (IIRC his original intro involved him having a girlfriend, and just being a rough and tumble ######### who got in bar fights all the time, basically the "macho british lad" stereotype.) Certainly the two are not incompatible, but like I mentioned at the start, the sheer whiplash between the two comes off as a bait and switch.
Hopefully someone doesn't try to find a way to put words or opinions in my mouth from this post, or try to demonize me for something they assume i must have been implying or something, but thats about it. I think they did everything right about it except for having it suddenly be a surprise after this many years.
This would be all understandable as an argument if it was ever used as an argument outside of LGBTQ+ inclusion.
several tomes have added (sexual) partners to already established characters: David got a girlfriend mentioned in his first tome story (not the release background lore), Yui got a partner mentioned (though not gendered but that kinda also confirmed her not being aromatic/asexual), Frank and Julie were made a sexual active couple in their tome story while in the initial lore I think it was just hinted at that Julie had a crush on Frank. And there are many more I am not even thinking of right now.
now is the first time it’s an explicit non-heterosexual relationship being added. And suddenly there are plenty of people here being against these kind of additions? This just seems very suspicious - especially if they brush any of the other examples off and we are in the 11th rift with all of them adding lore to at least two characters..
-
I really just wanna know their motivation to be so against this story line of David being gay.
they say it’s about David not intended to be gay when he was created (which there is not even proof for in any way) but then… they also never ever complained about any other lore addition in any of the other tome story’s??

Sure, but that wouldn't change the fact with David. And I'd just say why not start with said new character to begin with
Why are you repeating that it wouldn’t change the fact with David after I have already said it wouldn’t?
just wanted to see if your problem was the LGBTQ+ representation or that they ‚changed‘ David in your mind.
so. You do have a problem with Wraith and Nurse being hinted as being a thing as well right? There was a tweet about it and cosmetic descriptions. And Wraith was very likely not created with any specific sexuality in mind..

Wouldn't change the stuff about David
Of course not. Why would it? It’s established official lore and won’t change.
but if they did create a new character who is revealed in their backstory to be LGBTQ+ they would show you that they are putting in effort into representation, right?

Actively? I don't know. I don't recall the extra emphasis on anything else other than lgbt. The roster is diverse but I've never seen a tweet saying "hey here is our new female survivor because representation matters."
I remember shortly after Elodie released they retweeted a video of a fog whisperer that expressed her feelings of how happy she was to see someone represented in a game that looks similar to her as this is still a very rare sight.
iirc they even pinned a forum thread with that topic.
So yeah, they have been actively emphasizing representation in their game outside of LGBTQ+.
also remember that they kinda excluded anything LGBTQ+ related while being already very diverse and had varied representation even on initial release of the game (Claudette being a black woman, Jake as Korean man).
also, one single tweet isn’t really that much of a focus either. They have 1960 tweets total according to Twitter right now and there have been around 20 tweets after that David tweet.

They just could've made a new character, That's all. There isn't much else to say to answer that that goes into detail.
There's just more to be desired than that.
What if they add a new character that’s LGBTQ+ as well though?

Also yeah, Ben and Harry. Ew.
It's the way I knew a couple Harry's
Oh I loved them later on as well! Just needed to get used to them. Those sparkles when they held hands ✨

wow just say you hate british people
nah I think it was more about those doodles that seemed pretty random and annoying in the beginning. Later on I found their implementation more punctual and appropriate.
also Ben or what’s-his-name. Ugh.

Loved it. Just wanted to start with the first episode today and well. Got to the end.

Shows effort. I do think the intention of something shows how serious it can be.
In the battle, I just think the new character would be superior in most cases and reasoning.
It’s way more effort to write a story like this for an established character, as you need to make it believable and be careful not to change the character or write contradicting stuff - and they actually accomplished that. It would have been lazy if they did it the Rowling way: slap it as a label on an existing character without actually having it be in the story.
in the end, it doesn’t matter though. Both existing and new characters are fictional characters and the creators can expand their stories how they think they fit. They have also already confirmed there will be more LGBTQ+ chars - for both existing and new ones possible.

well, it is at least noticeable that there haven’t been any threads about this and how much people don’t care about lore/want it actively be limited outside of LGBTQ+ topics.
but then again you are right, I don’t know if you have already given feedback on this before. Have you though?

Personally I just want it to be left blank so everyone can enjoy the characters for being characters. Their sexuality shouldn't be told in the lore unless it's truly important to their story.
Because at the end of the day, they're all going to be left on the floor by a Nurse or watched until they die on hook by a bubba. I don't think which way they swing really matters there.
To be fair, it is in David’s case truly important for his story. It is also important for Nurses lore that she was married to her husband and that she lost him. These are experiences and struggles in their lore that making them the characters that they are!
i agree BHVR should never just go out of their way to randomly going out the Rowling way and announce the sexual orientation/identity of every character just for the sake of it :)

Only just started to play dbd on Xbox and I love it, can't believe it's taken 6 years to finally play it. It's thanks to David King becoming gay going viral and I discovered the game. Anyways back to topic!!
Reading this has brought back memories for me, with coming to terms with being gay, questioning myself etc.I do relate to David King becoming gay and that he is British!! (Hello from Birmingham!!) and it's nice to have characters relate to. I feel I kinda relate also to Dwight Fairfield as I sort of look like him and have that geeky feel to me.
I do love that some fans have the vibe of David and Dwight are a thing and if they are... THEN AWESOME!
I'm glad you have David King to relate to and your story is amazing and glad you are a much happier now! Thank you for sharing it!
See you in the fog
PS Milo is beautiful and sooo fluffy
Love to read comments like this :)
if you ever have questions or anything about the game feel free to ask here kn the forums, there are plenty of helpful members.
also, this game isn’t really best known to be beginner friendly, leading to some frustrating experiences as well as wonderful ones once you get the hang of it. And there sadly are many toxic players. Don’t let those drag you down!

@Mooks He's got a voice acting credit in the upcoming Sony Spider-man 2 set for 2023. Possible as Venom but that's up for debate. He did a voice for a character in DOTA but can't find anything more on it.
@NerfedFreddy You can't really denegrate something that doesn't exist. The character is Schrodingers, both awesome and sucky, because this is just a thought experiment.
I personally wouldn't use any other killer, if he were in it. And it has to be Tony Todd not that Abdul imposter from the 2021 film. But gameplay wise, there could be some interesting mechanics. His add-ons would be an easy pick (sweets, mirrors, paintings and brushes etc.) The bees could impair survivors, but instead of the crows, you could have a timer to get them off or you go to the injured (or dying) state. Could have mirros dotted around the map and put timers so survivors have to at some point interact with them and have that as one of the 5 Candymans the survivors have to say. Once all five, either exposed or condemned. His add-ons would either speed up the timer needed to interact with a mirror, or slow down the bee timer. His perks could be something around the theme of his hook hand and the trial hooks, maybe. As he isn't really a walking killer, he'd materilaise like Sadako. And maybe faze in the chases. Haven't put much thought in to these, this is jsut what's off the top of my head.
Problem is, in the movie canon he's described as a vengeful Wraith. So I have no idea what he's be called ALA Pyramid head and The Executioner.

They most likely had a little roundtable and said "who do we make gay so the weirdos on the forums stop screeching at us" and picked a character.
you are using the term ‚probably‘ and ‚most likely‘ wrong: just because you assume something or wish it was true doesn’t make it likely in any way
also pretty much no one was screeching at all 😂 someone on Twitter talked reasonably with the devs iirc and the devs have revised their stance on this topic admitting they have been unfairly treating the topic in the past unintentionally.

What, changing a few lines of text for each character? Pay me in blood points and I’ll do it haha
It wouldn’t change the fact that everyone knew how it was initially revealed and actually intended though.
these characters are established characters with well defined story’s/lives, that we discover through backstory’s and tome in pieces (and never complete). Part of these are relationships, and that also includes romantic or sexual relationships.
BHVR has stated clearly that this is the way they want to tell their stories. It’s actually pretty rude to ask them to erase part of their stories just because someone doesn’t want them to exist when they are not harming anyone with it..
-
I gotta say I liked the short background stories of the everyday people more than what we get now. Just some simple facts about their lives/struggles/etc
nowadays backstory’s and tome entries are pretty long and in most cases don’t really add too much. I read/listen to them once and that’s mostly it.
also not the biggest fan of multiverse lore in general. Makes it all feel so meaningless and unnecessarily convoluted.

Him being intended to be gay from the start makes his story (and the companies attempt at representation) more genuine in my opinion and overall better.
great that you acknowledge that it’s in your opinion and don’t state it’s an objective fact.
sure you can look at it that way. IMO it would be just limiting themselves for future tome story’s if they couldn’t add new stuff to their characters. Also Wraith got that mention about him and Nurse being a thing and I am pretty sure he wasn’t inherently intended to be straight/into women during his creation process either.

There is no proof either way and just assuming it and then acting like it’s written in stone doesn’t help.

well. those experiences and perspectives are still homophobic. And I am NOT saying those people are inherently bad people for it. Heck even I can make homophobic statements now and then. No one is perfect. The difference is I can reflect on my own behavior and see the problems arising from it.
also I didn’t say they are homophobic for not thinking he is gay. Don’t twist my words here. I said people that now complain it feels forced/slapped on etc because there wasn’t a hint before are making homophobic statements - even if those are not intentionally homophobic.
Representation is needed for normalizing the topic in peoples minds and one part of that normalization is finally getting rid of those stereotypes. You don’t have to act a certain way or have certain experiences in your life to be gay - even not if you are a fictional character. David is gay. That’s not forced. It’s part of his story. We even have a forum member sharing their story and how it is similar to David’s. (And before bringing it up: this is not comparable to Rowling announcing Dumbledore is gay years after the story was already finalized)
Just for clarification: Homophobia isn’t an either/or / black or white case. And it certainly is not an actual phobia at all. Being called an homophobe for making homophobic statements isn’t an insult or attack. If you get called that maybe instead of victimizing yourself try to reflect on what you commented and how others may feel about those comments, especially if they are personally involved with the topic.

I don't think people seeming to think David King isn't gay before this is rooted in homophobia. I think a lot of it is just based on people's experiences and perspectives they've had throughout life. I know I've said before it isn't nice to assume things about people but sometimes things just seem obvious to people. It doesn't mean they're right or wrong and it certainly doesn't mean they are any kind of phobe.

I would argue that it is normalized in many places in the world, and even more so online. I feel like when it is done in more subtle ways just like everything else there isn't as much or even if any controversy about it. Have they considered that not everyone who identifies as lgbtq wants to be represented like this or even at all? Regardless if you feel it isn't normalized or not, treat it like it is. At the end of the day most people just want to mind their own business and go about their lives not worrying about what other people are doing.
i would argue it isn’t. As evidenced by the reaction of the community right here.
there are people only criticizing the announcement, sure. But there are also plenty of complaints against LGBTQ+ as well, it feeling forced that it was David because he doesn’t seem gay or didn’t have any hints towards it etc. These are complaints rooted in homophobia.

https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/322167/david-being-gay-felt-extremely-forced
This is the point I and others have been trying to make. I'm glad to see you talking about because I think you've said it as plainly and simply as possible. It all too often feels like the strong desire to represent lgbtq has turned into a circus rather than being substantive and genuine. If you want to normalize or represent something you think isn't normalized yet then why does it have to be done this way? Why can't it as you said just be put in the lore in the same way everything else is without doing the whole all eyes and ears on me approach trying to convince the world you care about representation. I've been labeled a homophobe for having dissenting opinions over this, but I never label them for seeing it different than me or for doing that to me. The hatred is insane and I all too often feel like if I don't go along with it and have the same views then I'm the bad guy. I don't even feel comfortable mentioning my own sexuality or other things like my faith in fear of being labeled and attacked.
If you want to normalize or represent something you think isn't normalized yet then why does it have to be done this way?
its really simple: because it isn’t normalized yet and BHVR had changed their stand on this after being unintentionally excluding anything LGBTQ+ related while having multiple heterosexual relationships added kn lore.
i am VERY sure they won’t make a twitter post or announcement any time in the future when an LGBTQ+ character get added (or an existing character gets revealed)y. IF they continue to do so I will definitely call them out for that as well. But in this case as it is their first representation and the direct result from their collaboration with GaymerX, it’s really disturbing how people that want their opinion heard without ever hearing anything that might not be kn line with their own point of view can’t even acknowledge that there ARE reasonable reasons to announce it (acknowledging that would not be the same to agree it was a good decision, no one said you people have to like it)

Well, I kinda agree but then almost 90% of other discussions are also in the wrong forum section and should be moved. It’s a hot topic currently and already hell to moderate as is I would assume. Also it’s not completely bound to lore as people also discuss the way it was announced on social media.

I haven't ignored anything. I've disagreed with people I've previously agreed with. Confronting and resorting to attacking them based on those statements will not add anything meaningful to the topic at hand.
As I have said, calling out homophobic statements isn’t attacking the person. And some statements were at least on the edge (I don’t remember if you made such comments or have been called out yourself, but at least there were definitely such comments).
and as you probably will understand, this is a very subjective topic and people have diverse opinions on this. Sonetten if you don’t agree that a statement is homophobic you will agree that it’s okay if others have a different opinion than yours, right?

Uhh honey, this is a video game with plenty of lore and story telling. Let the creators tell the story’s they want and it won’t affect gameplay as it hasn’t since the beginning (well outside of fitting perk names and themes i guess).
Move on and you have a great day too
-
It still was just a Twitter post among hundreds, it’s not like they don’t post on twitter pretty much daily.
it was made a bigger deal of because their initial stand on this topic was exclusion (while still including heterosexuality). They made an announcement almost two years ago apologizing for their (unintentional) mistake and they have since revealed they were working with GaymerX on implementing representation in a not harmful way. The post and website blog are just them being proud of their work and showcasing it, you may not like it but there are reasonable reasons to post this.
now on David himself, it isn’t forced at all as far as I know, rereading the initial lore and first tome story made me realize that this could have been something thought about from the beginning, it ties story elements well together. Of course you might not agree with this subjective perception, but you surely see this is subjective and it’s not as forced as people want to make it out to be.

who care if "to x survivor likes y", just play the game... i'm starting to get tired of seeing all these posts focused about david instead of posts about the game balance/perks/addons/items/etc etc...
You don’t see posts about balance/perks/etc? I still see plenty of them.
also this is a public forum and lore is part of the game so if people wanna discuss it, they are free to do so (sadly many people don’t want a discussion but state their homophobic statements without being called out on acting homophobic..)

Why is it bad? You seem to care greatly about the sexuality of fictional pixelated characters. Congrats!
I couldn’t care less about the sexuality about any character.
i DO care about equal treatment though. And since heterosexuality was featured in this game since the very beginning it’s just fair that there is some kind of LGBTQ+ representation.
i said too bad because you said you would prefer it otherwise. You know.. it seems like you care about this just as well :)

I think this whole thing is just pointless. I don't really know who cares about DBD's survivors. It's not like they have anything that would make us cry if we saw them die or something. I don't think sexuality should matter anyways. It's a game about playing tall people and killing shorter people as a killer or running away from taller people as shorter people. It's like if they made one of the killers gay. Who cares? It doesn't play a role in the most important part of DBD specifically, the game, and the story of DBD I already... I mean no one is gonna cry for these characters if they ended up dying in one of these crappily made cutscenes or something you have to read.
I don’t get why people go out their way to type this kind of stuff only when it’s related to LGBTQ+ topics when this could be said about literally anything about lore. Does it matter that David played rugby? Does it matter that Frank and Julie were banging eachother? Does it matter that Adam liked to travel around the world?

You mean none of that couldn't be just a long journey of discovery about who they really are? Isn't that what David went through with his girl friends and all.
Good point! Do it could also be used in David’s case, that he is still on his long journey of discovery.
and voila, you yourself came up with a solution for you problem with this reveal.

Also at one point they did say that they are looking into unlocking parts that don't need to be locked but y'know don't expect anything fast from them.
This!
i actually hope that Store segment in the anniversary stream might include this - if it is related to the in-game store at all

I'd prefer to never hear anything else on the topic in a video game where people are put on meat hooks. Let people use their own imaginations. As we've seen from some of the "artwork" plenty of people already do lmao
Too bad it’s been confirmed there will be more LGBTQ+ characters revealed, both existing chars and new chars are possible.
but luckily, that should prevent anyone to use their imagination!

tbh people can have wives, girlfriends, kids, and still be lgbtq.
Tbh if you can ignore the lore where it’s stated Sally loved her husband dearly than you can also ignore the part about David being gay or make yourself an excuse he only had a phase, maybe to provoke his parents etc.
But seriously. For some characters it’s possible that despite their heterosexual relationships they might not be straight but Felix is definitely not gay and Sally is not lesbian.
