I've found that early morning is where games get really sweaty.

MMR is designed to produce 'fair' games, where each survivor has a roughly 50% chance of escaping.

Now, I can definitely see how this would make things sweaty for high MMR players, because they are playing against other high MMR players, as well as people ultra high MMR who the system can't realistically match with other players. But this comes with the benefit of ideally making things a bit more even for newer and intermediate players.

And that is where SBMM fails for so many of us long time players and killer mains that prefer to play casually but are stuck in a higher MMR bracket. It caters to the newer player base as well as survivors (especially with gameplay imbalance issues) and the system fails miserably for killers. Playing casual doesn't mean never securing a kill and to do as such nowadays, with the way SBMM is, you have to play incredibly sweaty and competitive at every second of the match with no false moves. It's boring, incredibly unfair and simply not fun. Survivors now stomp killers which should never be a thing. I get that the design of MMR was to make matches seem fair but because of the imbalances within the game (SWFs) and the way SBMM has been implemented (escapes/kills instead of scoring events/hooks) its been the exact opposite for killers.

I haven't seen that, at all.

And...proven? Where has it been proven? Be as specific as you can.

SBMM isn't perfect, but it's far better than ranks.

Haven't seen what? That your MMR raises too fast? That you hit a cap where it's just a competitive sweatfest? That your MMR never truly evens out? What part haven't you seen, at all?

When I say it hasn't proven to even out is as follows: Take Ghostface. I played him at the beginning SBMM was implemented. Had a couple too easy matches against noobs, a couple good matches and some bad against casual and/or medium tier MMR players (where I should be) and then ever since those last couple good games played at 5am, it's been nothing but one sweatfest after another against survivors with 2000+ hours playing at the top of their game. I've tried throwing matches, farming matches, AFKing through matches,, you name it and my MMR has not lowered one bit. Every and all matches I play with Ghostface since SBMM has been sweaty and competitive with top tier survivors with their profile stats to back it up.

So yeah, that has proven to me that SBMM is bullsh-t and this idea that it'll even out is a lie.

Maybe because your original point was:

"SBMMR sucks, will this new feature incentive killer to take breaks to lower their MMR?"

And the answer is, no. If you want to lower your MMR to tolerable levels, throwing games or playing like me (8hooks/0kills) is way more efficient and fun.

No one will take week long breaks because of some arbitrary MMR decay feature.

And if they take a break because the game isn't fun for them, then they take the break to get some distance to the game and not to lower their MMR.

It's just a nice side effect (nearly every ranked pvp game already has implemented) but most definitely not the reason for the break.

You say that the answer is no like it's fact when I for one will totally take a break and play other games Ive been meaning to get around to, while my MMR decays. I've been playing for almost 5 years and throwing matches or playing for hooks instead of kills, imo, is just as boring as being stuck at a higher skill cap, playing sweaty competitive matches.

And no, you're response didn't clarify the fact that nowhere have I insinuated wanting to slum it at low ranks or stomp on new players. There's no happy medium in this game anymore. The unpredictability of matches pre-SBMM was what made it fun. You could play casually because ranks were so varied. Being stuck in a bracket where the game decides who is at your skill level is absolutely garbage when the SBMM the devs implemented doesn't even base your performance on skill unlike other games that have this kind of system in place and as killer, you reach a cap far too easy and get placed with survivors who can run circles around killers in their sleep.

  • @Brimp said:

Depends on how much mmr decays per day but if its like any other games.... It 100% wouldn't decay fast enough to go from coordinated 4 mans constantly to brand new players within a week.

True. Which is just another example of what a sh-t system SBMM is and why keeping the figures hidden isn't helping community morale.

  • @RainehDaze said:

    It's been like five months.

Being based entirely on Kills vs Escapes is certainly not helping with how people would rather high-level play shakes out, but it's not been out for a year yet.

I'm talking on average with all the tests included but thanks for the math. Did that make you feel better?

  • @StarLost said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/305661/isnt-adding-a-decaying-mmr-for-killers-incentivising-players-to-simply-not-play-until-it-lowers

...Why would we not want our MMR to rise?

Slumming it at low MMRs gets very old, very fast.

This just means that I won't get my face pushed in by a bunch of 14 year olds on drugs every time I take a break.

SBMM at least made smurfing a million times more time consuming, it was so easy that even fog whisperers were doing it under ranks.

You all see to not get the point which is bizarre. I never said I or anything else wants to slum it at low MMR and stomp on newbies. Problem with SBMM as is, is that MMR rises way too fast cause its based on kills and not hooks which is not an accurate measure of one's skills. You then as killer, get stuck at higher MMR matches that eliminates all casual play from the game. People love to say that it evens itself out eventually but after a year its proven to not be the case. It's just one sweaty competitive match after another which sucks the fun out of the game entirely.

I've never played as a survivor, so that's a kind of funny assumption. Maybe the question you're trying to ask just makes no sense?

Is this bait? If you can't make sense around what I was saying in my post than that says more about you than it does me ✌

  • @Crowman said:

I doubt the decaying MMR is going to decay very fast and there's likely going to be a period of time before it even starts to decay. At least if the devs have any sense about implementing it. It could take at least a few months to see the decay start matching you with lower mmr survivors and even then a few wins will likely put you back where you were anyways.

Agreed. It's just another unfun decision in a game that was made unfun from SBMM in the first place. For killers anyways. I don't find the role as survivor changed in any way.

  • @jesterkind said:

While people abusing a system for nefarious purposes (in this case, stomping newbies) is a concern, a decaying MMR is a very normal, standard mechanic- I was honestly very slightly taken aback that this implementation didn't actually have it built in when it was launched, more than being worried at them announcing it as a plan.

People who misplace their displeasure with the game's balance onto MMR are going to be trying to lower that number anyway, so I don't really see that as a viable reason not to implement a pretty sane, normal addition to the system.

Again, it seems like everyone's response is under the assumption that I'm speaking towards having easier matches or stomping on newbies. It's not news that SBMM is completely broken for killers and I'm wondering if I'm talking to survivor mains at this point.

  • @Laluzi said:

You can easily force-lower your MMR by letting survivors go or letting killers kill you. That's a way easier and more efficient strategy to employ than putting down DBD for a long time so that you can have a few easy games when you pick it back up months later.

I'm more worried that taking a long break from DBD will put me in with potato rank survivors. Everything else about this looks nice, and it's not any different from how the game used to decay your rank by a tier each month and you'd be brown rank after a several month hiatus. No, this doesn't really fix any of the issues with MMR, but it's not marketed as a fix for that; it's just an allowance for players to shake off the rust if they haven't played in ages.

    Two things:

    1) It's easier to not play at all than to waste your time throwing a match to drop your MMR.

    2) It's not about having easy matches. It's about having fair matches. Killers MMR shouldn't be based on kills, it should be based on hooks. Having a couple good matches shouldnt put killers at a cap where they're playing against survivors who are far outskilled than they are, making every single match a sweatfest.

It's a small step in the right direction that unfortunately has its flaws as well.

  • @RainehDaze said:

If they stop playing until their MMR lowers, they'll wind up back where they should be within a few games. You also have to ask "How bad has something gotten if people would rather not play the game than deal with matchmaking?"

The idea that people who aren't playing the game for long periods should be assumed to have gotten a bit worse is a perfectly sane MMR implementation. It's normal to do it this way for one reason or another. What's baffling is worrying about how this will be exploited by people... not playing? What.

"If they stop playing until their MMR lowers, they'll wind up back where they should be within a few games"

Should be? SBMM has never been an efficient system in any way and you're response is made under the assumption that it works. And yes, the game has gotten "that bad" for casual killer mains because of SBMM. Enough so that we're putting the game down. One only needs to spend a few minutes on the forums, social media, Twitch and/or polls to see how much the majority of players despise it.

And am I worried about the decaying MMR implementation being exploited? No. I'm just pointing out the flaws that it will cause killers to take a break from playing to focus on other games while their MMR drops (which BHVR won't want) to further help put pressure on the devs to overhaul SBMM.

  • I'd love offerings that change the weather or time of day for maps however they would need to revamp the bloodwebs and how we tier up with perks because the grind as is, is absolutely dreadful. Personally I would love a crafting mechanic due to add-ons and items players don't use (ie. I personally don't use keys, key add-ons, syringes or septic agents) that would make the grind more justifiable. Love the idea though.

  • I think boon totems really should be relegated to a token system. Like 4 (?) tokens per match and then the perk becomes deactivated.

  • SBMM made me quit for the time being. Killer just simply isn't fun to play anymore and being a killer main, it ruined the game for me. I'll consider coming back if this dreadful system ever gets removed.

  • Totally agree. I've been playing this game for 4+ years and as much as I hate to do it, I'm thinking about uninstalling the game indefinitely. SBMM has killed any fun I used to have playing killer. The game is so unbalanced for this system to work and survivors now dictate a match which should NEVER be a thing. I didn't play this game for as long as I have and dumped as much money into it, to be a competitive sweatlord. It just feels bad.

  • 1) SBMM ruining the role of killer.

    2) Survivor sided imbalances

    3) The grind.

  • Preach!!! I've been playing this game for 4+ years and as much as I hate to do it, I'm thinking about uninstalling the game indefinitely. SBMM has killed any fun I used to have playing killer. The game is so unbalanced for this system to work and survivors now dictate a match which should NEVER be a thing. I didn't play this game for as long as I have and dumped as much money into it, to be a competitive sweatlord for 95% of my matches. It just feels so damn bad.

  • I would get rid of SBMM. It doesn't work, the game is too unbalanced for it and it's killed the fun in playing killer. No one should have to play as a competitive sweatlord 95% of one's matches. It just feels bad.

  • I completely agree with so many of you. Ever since SBMM was introduced, killer is just not fun anymore. It's just one bully squad after another for being even slightly good at the game. I used to play 6 hours a day and now I thinking about uninstalling the game permanently. It just feels so bad.

  • This is a pretty great idea.

My first game with Clown I went against a super SWF. Next game after the huge loss I went against people with 250 hours. Is that intended? Does it bump you down really low when you take a heavy loss as killer? I know this was sorta explained but the killer part is still so confusing to me. Btw 250 hours dont make you bad or anything lol my hours are just kinda insane :')

I've been hoping SBMM would balance out but as a killer main, it just feels awful. For solo queue survivor, I haven't had much issue but as killer, you get 4 okay matches and then it's just a sweatfest from then on out. Every match feels like I'm going against either the most competitive tryhard survivors in the community or a SWF that no killer could ever barely stand a chance against. It's become incredibly miserable to play as killer if you're even slightly good at the game.

    No.

I am starting to feel like what people believed to be casual matches under the rank system were them being significantly more skilled/knowledgeable than their opponents; so much so that they could take their time and savor their 4k. You can still have casual matches - I have them all the time as killer - but it's much harder to get a casual 4k when going against players who are near your level of experience.

I'd like to agree as I'm open to other opinions (hence the poll I made) but you're coming from a place where you're putting the importance on 4Ks. I'm coming from a place where every match is sweaty and getting even 1 single kill seems like way more work than ever before. Its become competitive which this game should never be and will never be considering how imbalanced it is. Being even slightly good feels like playing in high MMR matches or against SWFs every single match. The game was never this sweaty before SBMM and survivors should never be in control of the match which 90% of the time, it clearly is.

  • No. SBMM has done nothing but punish killers for being even slightly good. It's not fun having to play sweaty every single match so no, their explanation was sh-t because they didn't even mention this glaring fact. They made it sound like they don't play their own game or understand the systems they implement.

  • I usually run Pop, Oppression and Discordance just to keep up with gens and it's boring af. I hate having to do it but with SBMM making every match a sweatfest, I feel like I have to run at the very least 2 gen slow down perks and a gen tracking perk just to stretch the match to have any sort of fun cause gens just fly these days.

  • Couldn't agree more. I just went to play my first match if the night as killer and was using Discordance. 2 survivors each were on a gen at the opposite side of the map and by the time I got there, both gens were done. I just DC'd and quit. This game is an absolute joke right now. No one should have to use Corrupt, Ruin and/Pop every single match just to have any sort of chance good or bad.

  • As killer this game has become absolutely dreadful for being even slightly good at it. Just sweaty match after sweaty match. Been playing for almost 5 years and I'm about ready to throw in the towel. I play for casual matches, not to be some sort of eSports pro.

  • @BabyBubbaMain said:

Simple. The game punishes you for being good at it.

Nobody likes to sweat in a casual game like DBD and ontop of that BHVR enforced it onto us indefinitely and alot of my friends just stopped playing killer because every single match was unfun for them.

Exactly. I've been playing this game for almost 5 years and I'm about ready to uninstall it. Playing killer just isn't fun anymore and that was my favourite role to play. SBMM completely killed the casual aspect of the game and you're right, it punishing you for even being slightly good. It's just sweaty match after sweaty match. Also it makes doing Tome challenges next to impossible. It's awful.

  • I've been playing since 2017 and thinking about leaving too. SBMM has killed the game for me. I used to be a killer main and it's simply not fun anymore. Every match is a sweatfest and having any sort of casual fun is nonexistent. It's so sad that they implemented this system indefinitely. All I hear and see is killers dropping like flies which is just boosting survivors even more. The game was always somewhat imbalanced and now it's just a disaster. When survivors control the match, you know the game is broke.

  • I feel this 100%. Playing killer since SBMM was introduced has been dreadful. There's no such thing has casual matches for killers anymore, even if you're only slightly good with a certain killer. You have to be on top of your game every single time, using nothing but gen slow down perks and playing sweaty the entire match. It sucks, it's boring and it's so imbalanced and unfair.

  • @solidhex said:

Gen speeds are fine, increasing the time would only hurt the players that have it the worst right now, solo q survivors. I barely have problems with gen speeds when playing killer, the problem is imo that survivors can waste too much of the killers time on some maps with BS loops, combine this with actually smart survivors who split up on gens and you will surely lose.

What bad/ mediocre killers don't understand, it's not about gen patroulling. It's about hooking survivors as fast as possible and apply pressure through that, make them leave their gen. Patroulling and kicking gens does nothing and if you can't win a chase, 10 more seconds on the gens will not make you win that round.

Sorry, I disagree. Solo survivors actually have it pretty good right now with SBMM. It's really the only benefit of the new system tbh.

And gen speeds are a problem when killers HAVE to run gen slow down perks to make any sort of dent. There are but a small handful of killers you can play without them (ie. Nurse, Blight) but you can be a God at cutting chases and the gens are still going to fly.

  • Clearly I did not. Ive been trolled too many times on here that sarcasm is lost in forums like this without a "lol" indicator.

It's not trolling. Simply stating the facts. Everyone thinks they are high mmr. As being rank 1 meant nothing that hardly proves you know high mmr.

Trying to take into question my level of skill at the game is the definition of trolling. You're a waste of time.

It's amazing how everyone thinks they are in high mmr.

Please troll elsewhere. I've been a Rank 1 killer for 4+ years. I know what a high MMR match is.

  • @Labrac said:

They need to make something to make games last a bit more. There's no time to enjoy your killer power or your chases as survivor when most games right now end in less than 10 minutes. To have any sort of chance against good survivors you have to AT LEAST proxy.

They don't have to necessarily increase gen speeds. Here are some suggestions:

    • Make maps smaller. Every map should range between the size of Coal Tower to Ironworks size being the biggest;
    • Adjust tile safety, those super huge loops on Coldwind that you can see the killer over and should not exist. Safe pallets should only exist on places where the killer can mindgame (shack, jungle gyms) and the ones you can see the killer over should be like the car loops on Autohaven;
    • Make survivors have to go through a 2 second animation to return a regressing gen to normal;
    • Buff gen regression, removing only 15 seconds of a gen after a full minute of regression is just too little;
    • Add some sort of early game slowdown so you can't just pop a gen in 40 seconds with Prove Thyself before the killer is even able to traverse the map.

With some of these, you can even nerf some of the killer gen slowdown perks for what I care, I don't even run them because they are boring, but it's super sad I'm just forced to run them if I want a game lasting longer than 10 minutes.

I'd be totally on-board with these changes and completely agree 100%

I was being sarcastic. I've seen people say things like that while being completely serious.

Thanks for clearing that up. Your sarcasm was lost on me with the way people talk to each other on these forums.

  • @Veinslay said:

My best friend is a Clown main that plays at the highest MMR and he routinely gets 4Ks without using slowdown perks. I'm not sure why you're having so much difficulty with it.

Cause you have an insight into every one of his matches right? SMH. This has been an issue for killer mains for some time now and I'm not exclusively talking about myself. Gen speeds are imbalanced in relation to SWFs as well as recent perk introductions and buffs.

  • @Rey_512 said:

But survivors don’t have fun holding M1 on a generator, that’s not the right way to balance the game!!

Oh, and there’s Mr. God Killer who has no problem 4K’ing regularly with no tunneling/camping, no meta perks… so the problem is obviously you.

I'm a 5000+ hour killer main playing in high MMR games. The problem isn't me but thanks for your opinion.

  • @EvilJoshy said:

I wonder how long it will take a survivor main to pop in here and say "Just apply pressure"

    Hahaha for real.

  • As if SBMM hasn't made killer matches a miserable, sweaty time as is, with the way gen speeds are currently, this is a ridiculous buff to SWFs. A well organized team will completely dominate a match with everlasting medkits and toolboxes with this perk buff. The excuse that 12 seconds in a locker is a lot of time is complete nonsense. That's nothing to players that are communicating on mics. This feels so bad with the state the game is in for killers.

  • To clarify the reason why I think the SBMM is dreadful is that as a killer main, it's causing matches to be nothing but sweaty, every single time. It completely destroys any chance of just playing casually and any chance for survivors to learn to get better. I play all of the killers on rotation so the argument that some people keep making "just play killers you're not as good with" is null and void. I have more than 5000+ hours in the game and the killers I don't play as often, I still destroy because I know all of the tricks to get survivors to play into what I'm driving them to do (aka it's boring and unfair to the survivors). On the survivor side, SBMM is just an impossible way to gage one's skill when so many people play in SWF groups. I can't for the life of me understand why the devs or people that are championing this system, can't wrap their heads around these facts. It's a game breaking system that isn't considering all the factors this game presents.

All in all, I think implementing this SBMM system will cause killer mains to either quit the game entirely, be bored as all hell or inflate the survivor player base, causing even longer queue times. As many suggested, a tougher pip system seems like the way to go to help separate the player base in regards to skill and those who've been carried to higher ranks by playing SWFs. And as far as learning new killers? Practice them. It's what we've been doing for 5+ years without our hands being held, so why now?!

  • On console he's still the worst killer in the game. Hitting a survivor with a blade is so hard to do on a controller. He's only a viable killer for PC players which is totally unfair imo. He's in desperate need of a speed buff to rectify his unbalanced nature between PC and console.

  • It's still terrible. You're definitely not the only one. Survivor is a tad bit better but killer is still a nightmare to play with all the framerate drops, stuttering and teleportation.

  • To each their own. I love the Midwich map especially playing as killer.

  • It truly is terrible what they did to him especially for console players who are already handicapped playing him with a controller. All he needed was a buff to his movement speed to about 112% and he would've been fine. SMH.

Damn you must be in quite a lot of pain to post this under every thread with this topic.

When you've been playing the game for over 4 years and have dropped well over $700 on DLCs and cosmetics, yeah, it's painful that the game is as broken as it for console players. It truly is inexcusable at this point.

  • It pains me too see so many players settling for the bare minimum and/or brown nosing the devs. It's barely fixed with only slight improvement and after 2 months of the game being broken and 5 years of the game being released, it's inexcusable. Period.
