Feel like a mute feature would come in handy. Overwatch and Warframe are 2 games I've played where you have open coms with randoms. Mute anyone who starts being toxic and you still have teammates you can talk to.

Didn't have problems with it in the original game, but Overwatch 2 got so bad that eventually I just muted everyone.

Remember that anonymous mode can protect from rudeness, especially when you are a killer and survivors losing want to hurl bad words at you after the match. It allows you to avoid "-rep" and other such messages on your wall (Steam).

In my matches the rudest people never hid their usernames. Never ever. On that particular level I think you just don't care. Whether or not you know the consequences.

Alternatively, you can set your wall on Steam to "Friends Only".

I did that a long time ago. No reason to care for comments of random players I, most likely, will never see again.

You will not see her much after they ner... sorry, rebalance her recent rework in early next year.

I wanna have hope for all the amazing Sadako mains I've recently interacted with, but the word "rework" is one hell of a bad omen around here.

  • I don't think it will ever happen.

No only because of the insults and hate speech (which we all know would happen), but also because of the game's nature.

DBD will always remain a hide and seek survival game, that will never change. The game is built around a certain lack of information: which is the very reason why we have perks that give the player select amounts of information, such as Alert and Bond. Also the reason why the old Object of Obsession had a risky downside to it.

It is unlikely they will ever get rid of such aspect.

I typically adapt. If my info perks mean nothing and I can't find half their team for the life of me, then guess what's going to happen at 5 hooks. Someone will die. That's the logical consequence.

It's annoying for sure. I mean, nobody likes having their perks countered. But I can deal with it for the most part.

Spam heals were getting out of hand, so I disagree that these changes were unnecessary.

Spam heals were getting out of hand, so I disagree that these changes were unnecessary.

That was only because of COH, a perk I strongly believe shouldn't exist.

Healing had been fine for years before that.

This is a joke right, survivors weren't "hit with unnecessary changes" all those things were rightfully broken and changed, medkits, circle of healing, "totems" idk even know what this refers to, and they didn't get any big chase nerfs besides 0.2s of their speed burst and dh not being as op as it used to because it made chases a joke

Yes, they were. It is the reason why few people do anything but gens these days, because there is nothing else.

Totems? Well, this one is the ideal secondary objective. But Ruin got a rework and a nerf, and Thrill of the Hunt got a nerf. Very few killers use hexes, and the ones who do have no means to protect them.

Healing? Unnecessarily nerfed. I blame CoH for that, a perk that I believe shouldn't exist, and the reluctance to bring Self-Care back to the meta.

Chase? Map reworks messed them up pretty badly. There are deadzones aplenty and those new tiles are awful to run.

Hide? This one is still viable.

The current state of the game is a consequence of unnecessary changes.

  • Is this because of Ultimate Weapon?

My guess? It is actually because stealth is one of the few things from the survivor side that hasn't been hit with unnecessary changes.

Everything else (totems, healing and chases) has suffered in one way or another.

Edit: Nevermind, I had forgotten about Iron Will. Essentially everything survivors had got hit with an unnecessary change.

Undying got complaints because it was legitimately too strong. Spirit got complaints because there was no counterplay. NOED got complaints because there was no counterplay.

They didn't get complaints because they got picked. NOED and Spirit weren't even 'meta'.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3615406#Comment_3615406

No, because Eruption didn't last that long. Windows of Opportunity has overtaken it by now.

I literally said the point was not if those things deserved nerfs, only the fact they were part of the killer meta and survivors complained about them.

And besides, I question this information. Spirit was literally the second-strongest killer in the game.

It kind of is though. Camping and tunnelling will get complained about, but general killer perks and kits don't get nearly as many complaints, with the exception of Blight's add-ons.

Meanwhile, there's a new WoO nerf thread every week. I haven't seen any calls for gen-kick nerfs in months. The last time I can remember that gen-kick was complained about was Eruption enforcing a 25 second 'do nothing' time-out every time someone got hooked.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3615358#Comment_3615358

No, it's not 'equally guilty'. Windows of Opportunity has had more complaint threads than STBFL, Eruption and Aura-reading combined. And the complaints aren't even always calls for nerfs, just reworks to sidestep an issue with interactivity while preserving power. Eruption imposed 25 second thumb-twiddling and STBFL is being used to camp. I don't think I've even seen complaints about aura-reading perks other than Ultimate Weapon circumventing Distortion, the perk whose one singular job it is to protect from those perks.

And still, Windows of Opportunity is higher on the list to complain about, in general, with the primary argument being pickrate. Not that it's frustrating to go against, or unbalanced or anything of the sort, no. Just pickrate.

Survivors are using it, therefor it is busted.

No, it isn't. There have been plenty of complaints about the killer meta in the past, the only reason you aren't seeing them now is because survivors got the short end of the stick. If the roles were reversed, I guarantee we would be seeing it.

For instance, we can think of Undying, NOED, Spirit and her add-ons, and many others. And I'm not here to discuss whether or not these things needed nerfs, what matters is that survivos complained about them.

Reversions have to be done in order to fix the issues, but these reversions have to go both ways.

That wouldn't work the way you think.

Because such event would be a blast for people like me, who prefer the way things were in the past, while the people who are complaining would continue to complain regardless.

It should also be accompanied by buffing many of the lesser-used perks

Here's the problem though: We're not seeing these buffs, and we're not going to get them, either. Survivor perks have been on a downward trend where anything that is slightly above any of the established perks will be cut down.

Windows of Opportunity is, in terms of balance, a completely blank slot. It does nothing for the overall balance of the game. It is STILL being complained about by killer players.

Survivor perks doing things that benefit the survivors is considered a problem. You're not going to be able to expand the meta if every perk becomes the next scapegoat for why a killer lost a match. What would you want to buff? Healing, and have killers complain healing goes too fast? Boons, and have killers complain that boons can't be permanently broken? Item searching perks, and have killers complain about flashy saves and toolboxes? Stealth, and have killers complain that survivors are hiding too much?

To be fair, there are many things in the killer meta survivors complained about. Don't act like this is a one-sided thing, because it isn't.

And the solution is quite simple: revert the nerfs, but do it for both sides. Essentially, if we were to bring back the bloodpoint gains for WGLF, then we do the same for BBQ. That goes for all reversions.

I do enjoy most games against Huntress. I've had my longest chase ever against a Huntress, but it was still a pretty bad game due to a ######### solo teammate. As per usual.

Huntress was the very first killer I played against, all the way back in 2018. And I was just a baby Claudette, running for my life on Azarov's Resting Place.

Ah, those are good memories of a better time. A time where I loved this game. But I suppose Huntress will always be one of my fav killers to go against.

What do people mean with ballance? There are many forms of ballancing and one cruicial form you brought on the table yourself. Ballance is when there is tension without being oppessive. And that is why Nurse is never ballance, in no regard, because almost no tension exists. Sure, against a mediocre or bad Nurse, it can be. Against a good one, holy moly of course not. I would even say that a god nurse is not even opressive anymore because she suprassed that stage. She is just... pointless.

Does it feel good to outplay a good nurse? Yeah... Why do you think that is? Think about it.

You always seem to draw conclusions from yourself to others. No, I am not having fun playing against the nurse. ^

What does this paragraph actually say? Its a lil disjointed.

"... but mark my words the "imbalance" is what makes DBD playable." "If we are leaning into the theme of the game and the excitement of playing survivor then that imbalance has to favour the killer somewhat, otherwise we have Scooby Doo not DBD."

So, in 2019 we had then this Scooby Doo scenario, at least more Scooby as we have now, right? Somehow, nobody had a problem with that. And those numbers prove my point. And no, the game is not "stable", the game lost a good 3rd of the playerbase. I am not saying that this is only the reason (please quote me on that, since you are accusing me) why there were so many more players. BUT and thats the thing, you argue that if the game would be like that, it would be not playable. Time already has disproven the argument. It was very very much playable and had more people attracted to it. Unless we find out those numbers are all fake, there is nothing to discuss really.

"Remember people arent really asking for balance they are asking for simplicity, which is bad"

Where did anyone asked for simplicity? You got some source or is this your interpretation?

So, in 2019 we had then this Scooby Doo scenario, at least more Scooby as we have now, right? Somehow, nobody had a problem with that. And those numbers prove my point.

Many people think 2019 DBD was the best there ever was. The game's peak, one might say.

If you ask me, it was before that. But it is a valid opinion.

The problem is and will always be that dbd players lack any capability to change their mind, at least the average player/old players, for example it is widely known, at least on some parts of the comp scene that you can loop artist by baiting the crows, she is still bs thanks to deadmans but you can loop her, however everyone and their mother will spout that you have to hold W as soon as she places a crow, why? Because its easier to say that holding w is the solution rather than admiting you are not good enough to loop her.

Dont get me wrong, some killers are absolute BS at loops, knight before the AI baiting bug was unavoidable, skull merchants beams are horrible, nurse errases the concept of looping.

But a lot of people repeat and repeat the same " the only counterplay is to hold W", and will ignore multiple things like dredges remant baiting, camera switch on hag, crouch teching nemesis, like man sometimes I really think people are bad on purpose when they ignore so much things they can do, then again most of the content creators for this game have this same actitude so whats to expect from the community.

I don't think that is the problem, actually.

People can adapt to specific counterplays, even old dogs like you and me, the most famous example being the strategy of breaking LOS when facing Nurse. But the wave of anti-loop killers normalized something that shouldn't have been normalized, which is the hold W strategy.

Even if there are small, niche techs you can do against those killers specifically, holding W also works and people will use that because they cannot loop those killers.

Looping is the best part of chases because of the mindgames, and the potential both sides have to outplay the other. The fun dies when all you do is pre-drop everything.

  • I'll give you an old classic.

    Bear on bear:

  • I don't have a recent one to share, but I do remember fondly that one match against Ghostface...

It was shortly after his release, and I was playing solo on Old Haddonfield. I was the first to be found and chased for 5 gens.

Then my teammates left me to die.

  • Survivors being able to delete her traps without flashlights wasn't a good change, in my opinion.

  • They are both kinda useless, but Pallets are slightly more fun.

  • @Ayodam said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3614978#Comment_3614978

DBD has anti-loop killers because players wanted killers that could more easily handle loops. But survivors still need some way to counter that; hence pre-drop and run (although to be fair that’s not a sure-fire way to escape an anti-loop killer).

There is far too much of them. It is no wonder people were overjoyed when they learned Sadako didn't have a chase power.

Anti-loop killers are okay, but an overabundance of them creates the problem of pre-dropping everything and holding W becoming something you see every match. And it is boring to the extreme.

    Chases without mindgames aren't fun.

Trying to refute my point by associating it with "biased killer mains" doesn't address the point it just tries to undermine it associating it with potentially biased players. That's called a strawman and its a weak position to have. (I know the phrase strawman gets used a lot as a I win buzzword but here we have a great example of one so I feel its warranted). It only holds true if I am a killer main and I'm not as I said don't assume my playstyle and I won't assume anything about you, that includes maintaining an argument that needs to assume it to have basis, which is what you've done.

Now for the topic at hand. I never said fear you don't have to be scared of the game in fact most people aren't. We aren't talking about fear we are talking about tension. What makes a chase so intense in a game of DBD? The consequences, and the consequences can be high if you fail to do well and that creates Tension also known as excitement. When the horror is gone the excitement is what remains.

What you are proposing is to dumb down the excitement in the name of mechanical balance. My counterpoint is that's a crap idea because mechanically DBD is pretty bland and I really don't want DBD to become a bland mechanical experience that lacks tension. There are enough games out there like that.

There is a lot of stuff from old DBD that I would like to see back again not all change is good change. Its generally improved but its definitely lost some of its more threatening and exciting mechanics. Old Moris for instance. I understand why they were changed but I miss the atmosphere they used to create and the threat they used to represent, I hope they never dumb them down further and actually bring in that proposed special mori ending that would be really crap.

Steam charts are actually pretty stable across the long term charts and making assumptions about why players quit is just as bad as making assumptions about why players play or have the opinions they do. Circle back to the first point about assuming things.

I'm not refuting that killer wins more than survivor you would expect that given the need for teamwork on the survivor side, the point I've always made is that's not necessarily a bad thing when you consider the theme of the game. (Before any schmuck quips back with "people won't want to play a game where they always lose," I'm not saying they should but a killer bias is to be expected and its what we see in outcome and its completely appropriate if people want a thrilling game as survivor).

There is a lot of stuff from old DBD that I would like to see back again not all change is good change.

I wish more people shared this line of thought.

This and the one with random perks, which could just simply get included in the original gamemode.

The rest is for my taste to offside the actual game and will only cause a lot of conflict within the playerbase, including queue time. On top of that, ballancing those gamemodes would become extremly time consuming, and we run this high risk for something we might actually wont like in the long run anyway.

I can see the arguments for 2v8, but everything else I think just doesn't work.

Random perks should be there, obviously, and disgustingly scary is easily the best one, imho. It brings the game back to its original horror direction, which I think is what DBD should be.

  • @xEa said:

I do not assume your prefered role, but the statement stays. It is what killer mains use to justify numbers these days, because its the only thing left. The game shifted towards killer, and it is hard to debate for killer mains outside the killer fantasy argument.

I am always for ballanced experience, said by someone who is, believe it or not, playing more killer then survivor. Especially now, i would even call myself more a killer main then a 50/50 as i used to be. So that we have this out of the way as you did aswell, lets get back on track for a moment.

The horror is gone for most people, thats the nature of how we work. Watching a horror movie as a child is a completly different experience then rewathing it the 5th time or so as an adult. If you call them "those" people, this is your point of few. In my years of playing, survivors only complained about oppressive killer. And they quit because of that, not because it was to boring or to less horror. Most survivors, from my experience, dont give a poop about anything else then gameplay. And on the other side, i also dont know any killer beside like a handful of people that even care about being scary, or getting the next big license. In fact for example Cucky became the main of a friend recently, and horror is the last thing that comes to mind why the person plays that character.

EDIT: I want to add another thing to your horror argument. The Dredge: Dredge is without a doubt the most horror we ever hadin this game. The nightphase is scary (?) as hell, jumping out of lockers the ultimate jumpscare next to Mirror Myers, the appearence of this killer could be right out of a nightmare. Overall, the ultimate horror formular. And still, where does The Dredge stand? Not played much, not liked by survivors. Reason? Gamelay.

Now to the most important part of your post: The imbalance makes DBD playable.

Then why not go back to 2019, 2020 or 2021 where survivors had more the upper hand but the game was at least more ballanced then it is now? We also had crazy stuff for both sides, so there was always some strange inballanced of gameplay. I can back up that argument relativly easy by just pointing to Steam Charts. Compare playerbase then and now. Even tho we just had the most popular license DBD ever had (Alien), it does not look like the players are super happy with the game overall. Isnt it likely that ballance experience is more important for fun then unballanced horror fantasy? The numbers would match with that.

Then why not go back to 2019, 2020 or 2021

That is what I have been saying for a long time.

Reversions can fix 99% of problems people have with the current state of the game. I guarantee you that I, if given power, could do it.

  • I don't know because, well, I don't have him.

But playing against him isn't that fun due to remnant being used mid-chase. If he had only the teleport to lockers and nightfall, he would be awesome to go against, because his concept is really good.

  • @pseudechis said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3612912#Comment_3612912

    These are all good points.

Part of the problem is a truly scary experience is often very high threat, which means a likely low chance of survival. But because its an online game players often don't find that scary, or don't appreciate that as scary, and they just qualify it as annoying.

So to broaden the appeal, the game eventually gets more tame in the interest of balance. This is to appeal to those who don't want a threatening or scary environment because they think its unfair. This is not entirely a bad thing because we don't want the game to be too unbalanced but it does inevitably water down the horror factor.

So have they swung too far away from the horror in an effort to make the game more player friendly, a lil bit yeah.

    These are all good points.

I'm happy to read that :)

I think you bring an interesting point of killers having that intimidating and dangerous presence, though it is difficult to manage that while you also have to take the game's balance into consideration. It is far more likely for a player to be intimidated by an ultra-powerful character, but then how do you win against said character?

If I may add another matter to the discussion, there is also the fact of each killer's design and the way they approach survivors. This is influenced by the game around them, of course, but it also varies depending on the killer.

For instance, I doubt anyone was ever scared of Trickster or Legion. And that doesn't mean they should be removed from the game or anything like that, it just means they are missing a very important aspect of a horror game.

On the other hand, we have stuff like Myers stalking you from a distance, Freddy (in the past) being invisible to awake survivors, Doctor being a proper horror character, and so on. I think every killer should have a little bit of what they have. You know, make you feel that you're fighting against a monster that is hunting you on an eerie place.

DBD had that, and it shouldn't have abandoned it.

    @Shroompy said:

The game is definitely still horror themed and has its horror elements, it being under the survival horror makes sense. Everyone who've I introduced to the game who jumped straight to Survivor treated it as a normal horror game which is to be expected, and over time it started to fade away.

What the game lost, is its unique art style and atmosphere. When the game first came out they had this sort of water blotch art style which can still be seen on the Swamp maps. This made it stand out and the moment you saw a picture of the game you could almost immediately distinguish it from others. The lighting was also very unique compared to other games as it was just bland desaturated colors which for a beginner felt very eerie and uncomfortable.

Considering the size of the game was much smaller when it first released, anything that made it stand out was definitely needed to attract players. As the game grew and gained its reputation how ever, they needed to appease to a much wider audience as well as modernize the game, which is where the new graphics come in.

I know a few veteran players liked the old graphics better and that's fine, but to say its lost is horror touch is just false. The maps we have nowadays covers A LOT of different horror genres compared to what we used to have. People like to bring up Coldwind just because its "in the day time", but there's plenty of horror media that takes place during the day. Texas Chainsaw Massacre being one of the most iconic horror movies out there and I don't think anyone says it isn't a horror movie because of it.

DBD should have been like Cuphead.

Cuphead, a very good game btw, doesn't have modernized graphics because it is meant to look like an old cartoon. It is that game's style and it was highly praised for it. DBD had its unique style, many people miss it, and it shouldn't have gotten rid of it.

Or, at the very least, there should be an option for us to select what we want: reworked maps or the older ones. DBD supports people playing on the same map with different lighting, modders have proved that, so there was no reason not to add such a feature.

A classic pack, if you will. I sincerely hope they do it.

I don't really main a certain killer, I play all of them (some less than others, ofc), apart from Xeno and Chucky, which I do not own yet. So I'm not really invested in any particular character. If the devs want to change some killer power, they'll do it, irrelevant of what that makes me feel. So I'll go along with it.

I certainly understand what you mean about losing your precious killer. So the rework sucks from a "killer identity" perspective. But from a power design / mechanical perspective, the rework was totally fine for the time being (but didn't age so well / was hit with too many nerfs afterwards). That's all I'm saying, and that's why I put Freddy in the mixed category.

You are totally free to disagree, and see it of the worst rework of all time. I just think from an objective perspective, taking into account the time the change came and not falling into the nostalgia trap, the rework was okay(ish).

It is far easier said than done, my friend. But perhaps you won't go through what I did, then. Which is good. No one deserves that.

    Well, agree to disagree, then.

The only map that has that old feeling imo is midwich, but thats more a silent hill compliment. Its a shuge shame.

    I agree completely, my friend.

But you cant really go off of that either since it doesn't tell you exactly what characters you got those prestiges on. Seeing the P3 achievement can mean having 1 character, or all 9.

What I dont understand is how they don't just release Legacy to everyone. Howling Grounds and Summer BBQ wasnt nearly as bad of a grind as Legacy was, but they still released them to everyone because people were randomly losing them.

You can also keep Legacy special by attaching it to Prestige. Prestige 50 you get the weapon/torso, Prestige 75 the torso/pants, Prestige 100 the head. That way theyre not just giving it away, and those who've lost their Legacy have a chance at getting it again with no time limit

I actually hadn't thought about that...

Ah, screw it, give it to everyone. At least those who lost it can get it back.

Yes you could make him somewhat viable, but that requires some heavy aid of his dream transition add-ons (and old class photo, I guess).

Old Freddy was helpless while survs were still in dream transition. The amount of times I had to witness the survs finishing a gen or opening a gate in my face without anything I could do was countless. Old Freddy was original yeah, but also awfully weak (at least for the casual killer player). And still a nightmare to newer players (pun intended).

Yes the rework totally destroyed his identity, but that does not automatically make the reworked power design bad. No one would bat an eye if a new killer had been released with this exact power. Imo with Freddy it's just the nostalgia kicking in hard.

    You're missing the point.

It goes beyond making him viable, which yes I knew and still know how to do.

It is about losing what is precious to you. You, my friend, has Nemesis in your profile picture, so I presume he is your main. If not, try to follow my line of thought with your favorite killer.

Imagine you wake up tomorrow and Nemesis is straight up gone. Instead, you get a killer with the exact same appearance, but with a vastly different power that you despise. It is stronger, objectively speaking, but you hate it.

That wouldn't feel good. I know it wouldn't, because that is what I felt in July in 2019.

Old Freddy wasn't what I consider weak, more so he had too many counters. As mentioned a few QoL changes would've sufficed.

    Exactly.

Not as weak as everyone said, and also extremely easy to fix.

  • I don't know, tbh. Garden of Joy is one of those newer maps, and I usually try to avoid those.

From what I've seen, however, it is a very bad map. Both aesthetically and for gameplay reasons. If there was a recent change, it doesn't seem to have had much of an effect.

Even then, it wouldn't be the same.

Legacy's whole point was to reward players who were there from the start and stuck around during a very rough and tumultuous period of the game's history. People didn't prestige for any sort of reward, they did it because they genuinely enjoyed putting time in the game and wanted to support it in any way they could. We didn't even know about Legacy until like, two weeks before the deadline, which was hardly enough time to rack up prestiges if you hadn't already had them.

Plus with the additions of bloodpoint offerings, the grind would still be easier now even if the bloodweb costed the same as it did back then.

Well, the idea isn't mine. I'm merely sharing it.

Still, at least it fixes the problem for those who lost them. Better that than nothing at all, I say.
