It does counter it because one is used to justify the other and vice versa. It can be used in the manner I've used it because it is relevant, and it's not up to you to decide in order to make your point seem more valid. It's not a weak attempt to undermine a one-sided argument by providing the same exact argument regarding a supposed causation. If it is, you're technically saying your argument is equally as weak. Get out of here with your childish discussion 101.
Again it really doesn’t, I’m sorry the snide attempt to counter my point by making the same point in an unrelated topic didn’t work.
Basically what you said agrees with me not counters me so I’m not sure what your goal was other than indulging in foolish “us vs them” survivor/killer tribalism.
I don’t think you knew what your goal was either or you wouldn’t have made such a foolish comparison.

Anything could be considered gen-rushing as well. I mean I've had Trappers complain about two gens being done before they got a hook in when they were busy setting traps and didn't run Corrupt Intervention.
The players who see gen-rushing everywhere are clearly seeing gen-rushing in any scenario so yes they see it everywhere.
It's an effect that suffers killer bias in that a player hyper-focuses on "gen-rushing" and as a result only remember or count the games when it happens and gloss over the times it doesn't.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen just that it doesn't happen the extent to which people want to claim it does and if it is then how wide of net are they casting with their highly subjective definition of gen-rushing.
Players aren't immune to losing just because they've brought a regular toolbox.
(You see the correlation, right?)
No there is no correlation here. You've misused the term correlation.
Making the exact same point about a completely different unrelated topic in no way contributes, counters or provides further discussion of the topic at hand.
The topic being discussed in this case "have you been tunneled?"
The concept of survivorship bias is a universal one with respect to data in general. So while the same point can be applied to many complained about aspects of the game. It can't be used in the manner you have used it to make the point you are trying to make, simply because it's not relevant.
Its whataboutism for whataboutism's sake, in a weak attempt to undermine the discussion being had.
That's a lil debate and discussion 101 for you.

I don't think that's an unpopular take, there have been lots of players who are enjoying it as survivor, myself included.
Like anything there are those who aren't fans and those who'll whine about that, the latter can be prevalent on the forums, but it's definitely not an unpopular take to like playing survivor in lights out mode.
I got my first consecutive escapes in lights out last night. It feels more rewarding to escape from lights out mode than in the base game.
The atmosphere, the need to be constantly watchful and looking around rather than just relying on TR heartbeat while repairing gens.
Lights out puts the tension back into playing survivor and its great.

If the killer finds you on a gen and has been chasing another survivor, you weren't being tunneled.
Ah here in lies the problem, with a broad enough definition anything can be called tunneling.
I've had people say I tunneled them even when I've hook 2 people in between chases simply because I downed them again in swift order.
The players who say they see tunneling everywhere are clearly seeing tunneling in any scenario so yes they see it everywhere.
Its an effect that definitely suffers from survivorship bias in that a player hyper-focuses on "tunneling" and as a result only remember or count the games when it happens and gloss over the times it doesn't.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen just that it doesn't happen the extent to which people want to claim it does and if it is then how wide of net are they casting with their highly subjective definition of tunneling.
Players aren't immune to elimination just because they've been unhooked nor should they be.
-
I avoid it almost every match with two things that everyone can try.
Genrushing - I avoid it by adequately spreading the pressure, knowing when to drop chase and/or slug, when to defend a hook to reset game pace and when to eliminate someone for ongoing pressure.
Tunneling - I avoid it by playing cautiously at game start to not be found first, utilize tools like built in BT to aid in escaping from the killer i.e. not trying to body block them and making myself a target, punish focusing on one player by either maximizing my time in chase or power through gens if not being chased. Safe unhooks and taking hits for my team where appropriate.
The is what YOU can do to end tunneling and genrush. Nothing about the game has to change to apply the two methods of good game sense and smart play.

That's why I like using a killer who's power can be utilized for at least SOME tracking. Played Artist and just shot crows at gens. Didn't even try using em for chases really.
Yeah try Doc, I knew where everyone was pretty much all the time.

I think Lights Out also enhances the killer experience.
It is nice to have that "oh crap!" experience that you've described, but it is even better to be the one who causes it. The killer is the danger, the monster lurking in the fog. It is a role which has to feel threatening, and I think it does feel threatening in Lights Out.
Unfortunately my main isn't available, but I've been having a lot of fun with the Knight. Spawning guards from the darkness, a survivor turns a corner and I'm suddenly there. It is perfect.
Absolutely I've had a lot of fun playing killer in lights out. What caught me a bit by surprise though is just how much more I enjoy survivor while playing it. Its the survivor experience I've always wanted but only ever get fleetingly in the base game.

well, to be fair, I usually view horror movies more as a comedy movie. Few movies that make me facepalm and burst out laughing as much as horror movies do. - So the usual DBD experience with chase at its center and a whole lot of ridiculousness is very much in line with how I see the horror genre and what I expect from it.
Put differently: If I had come to know DBD with the Lights Out modifier as default... I wouldn't have played for more than a few hours before uninstalling.
But as you say: to each their own. And I'm kinda glad there are at least some folks out there who seem to enjoy it - cause while for me personally it's a 1/10 I'm sure there was a team on the dev side that put a lot of effort and enthusiasm in.
Its really hard to induce a fear response in an artificial environment. I get where you are coming from there and it definitely couldn't be the base game because lets face it, it is rather one sided and won't appeal to people who want a more balanced PvP experience.
I personally relish in the imbalance I think its thematically great and I value that.

A classic trope makes a return.
Play trapper -> trap every bush you see -> watch them get caught over and over again.
Had a game like that last night as trapper on shattered square.

While integrating this into core dbd may see some opposition, I think having the lights gradually turn on as gens get completed would be a good idea. Something like lights turn on when 3 gens are done, TR comes back at 4 gens completed etc.
I made a similar point on another thread.
You get more and more of the mechanics that give information, TR, Heartbeat, survivor activity icons, hook meter etc as the objectives progress.
Not only does the game get progressively better lit but more complete information is available as you progress the objective.
It may never work and I'm sure people would love/hate it again but I'm just really enjoying lights out and thinking of the potential.

I'm not sure if I'm more baffled or more envious of your perception of the mode.
Safe for the "unable to see the incoming threat" I feel neither of the things you describe.
There's actually just two words to sum up the survivor experience - at least as far as I'm concerned: annoying and frustrating. (As for the killer experience: annoying and boring would be the two words.)
Well look at it this way, what do you expect from a game of DBD or at least what makes a great game of DBD for you?
I'm in it for the horror movie experience, which with each year is lacking more and more as I become better at the game and more desensitized as a result.
Injecting a real sense of just complete "Oh crap I'm screwed" right from game start has really jumpstarted that new player feeling I had when I first played DBD making lights out a great thing... for me and I hope many others.
If what you want from a game of DBD isn't captured by what I just described then sure I understand why you aren't enjoying lights out.
But remember this isn't about a balanced competitive PvP experience, its about being stuck in the dark in an "oh crap!" experience and its absolutely achieved that at least for those of us who want it.
I will play lot more survivor in this mode compared to the base game and I hope its eventually available on an ongoing basis.
-
Terror radius just breaks lights out as the moment you hear it you vanish off into the darkness.
The lack of terror radius is one of the best features of lights out. There is no warning now and that's doing my head in.
Survivor has never been so fun.
-
It was always gonna be a love/hate scenario.
I'm firmly in the love camp on this one lights out is great. I hope it stays.
Or better yet I hope it gets integrated into the base game so that we start off in darkness and matches get progressively lighter as the game progresses. Its dead by daylight after all.
-
I've often suggested the idea of maps starting out dark and getting progressively lighter as gens get done.
Lights out is a premise that works great on its own but integrating it at game start with more features and information coming to light as the map gets lighter with the progression of gens would be an amazing addition.
Game starts in lights out, you complete a gen it gets lighter and you get survivor activity info, complete another lighter still and you get the heart beat and red stain, 3rd gen is terror radius and visual terror radius queues.
Could also work in the opposite direction as hooks progress things unlock. Get half gens done and half hook states complete and you have basically classic game of DBD mechanically from that point.
Doesn't have to be exactly that but something like it would be great.
-
I second this, very little information, no counters or visible heart beat to take you out of the immersion.
I can't remember the last time as survivor that I looked around as much while working on a gen. It's nerve racking and so so good.
Also looping has dropped off a lot as often the survivor I'm chasing is actively trying to vanish off into the darkness rather than just sink my time by staying in chase and running around the same rock.
So far its all been great as killer I've had to exercise my hearing to zero in on survivors and as survivor I've had to be as vigilant as possible.
It's been rather killer sided but I'm fine with that, because the survivor experience has never been more immersive and horror movie like. 👍️
EDIT : Lol have played a few more I was so fixated on spotting the killer and trying to get away I didn't even notice you still have the visible heart beat in chase lol. This mode is great.

We wait almost 8 years for a new gamemode and this is it?
My disappointment is profound.
I can only hope they went very conservative as a test run and that they'll go bigger next time because the VAST majority of feedback I've seen has been negative.
Likewise, I hope they release kill and hook rates, just so we can see who is better basekit
It was always going to be killer skewed just by design.
Given the stark variation between lights out and classic DBD any baseline stats for lights out will be largely irrelevant to classic DBD.
-
What you describe is how you're supposed to feel while playing survivor.
Trapped, scared, unsure, desperate, constantly searching the unknown, unable to see the incoming threat and having no time to react... That's a horror movie!
Lights out has taken DBD to a place it was always meant to be.
Survivor has never been this intense or fun IMO.
I've only escaped once so far and have died every other match and I've loved every minute of it!
-
I can't really abide built in perks and blood lust gain is fine as is.
But I do agree there is nothing lamer than running around the same rock 4 times. It feels so scooby doo not halloween.
I'd like to see some kind of accumulative risk beyond bloodlust, for example your chances of tripping and stumbling causes speed loss when circling the same small structure multiple times. Hmm maybe that's a bit too harsh but at least something thematic.
More tall line of sight blocking terrain, nothing worse than low islands of junk with a pallet that can't be mind gamed, only hit boxed around till pallet drop rinse and repeat.
While I get sinking the killer's time is the key, incentivizing escaping from chase rather staying in chase and looping would be preferential, I don't have a great or remotely balanced answer for that though.
I wouldn't want to see more built in perks though that's just lazy.
-
So far
Started with Myers and it went well - 4K
Switch to Bubba and it went kina mediocre - 2K
Switch to doc and it was a laugh with all the screaming giving people away -4K
Then trapper and he's great, just catching players in traps everywhere. - 4K
Last game was clown overall a good game - 3K
Gonna rest on my laurels
Played a few survivor games lot of ghost face very common killer in the dark. Only one escape so far from 4 games. 2x Ghosty, 1x Bubba and 1 Chucky.
Its all been great though especially as survivor.
-
Lights out is amazing as survivor.
This is some of the most fun I've had in ages as survivor. Only one escape from 4 games so far but man is it a lil nerve racking trying to get the gens done.
-
What I do find interesting about this player base is a lot of players seem to want a completely different game experience and perhaps even a completely different game to the one dbd is.
They appear to hate it yet they keep playing and take their frustration out on other players.
I don’t see players complaining about getting ambushed and killed early MWO it’s just part of the game.
Maybe the darker horror genre attracts players with less social skills or with more emotional hang ups that they can’t stop bringing into the game with them?
Like all online experiences you get the sore losers and the bad winners, I don’t think the dbd community is any worse than any other game experience in that sense. Just the afore mentioned player entitlement and the lack of understanding as to what the game is about seems prevalent.

Hahaha, fair enough.
Just something I had to point out, as the Old DBD is a topic I feel strongly about :)
Me too. Chains of hate was the highest point in DBD in my opinion. In all its broken glory.
-
When I fail to catch them they tend to get away.
Maybe if someone is still trying to progress the objective even in the face of complete defeat, you gotta respect gumption.
-
There'd be less whining about it on the forum and a few smug whiners who celebrate without realizing that loss of content is never a good thing, even if that content isn't the best, it can always be tweaked and improved.
-
The killers are camping hexes now... the shame.
God forbid a killer wants to preserve a hex to get maximum value out of it. Especially when predictable survivors keep returning to cleanse it and make themselves easy to find and catch as a result.
I personally prefer it when killers wander aimlessly and hope to run into a survivor by random chance then actively patrol known areas of the map where they might be frequently and predictably found.
"Granted they do chases, hook survivors and kick gens, but the moment a survivor steps or touches the trap placed in front of the hex, they run back full speed. I wonder if the dev’s could add a range distance from placing traps around hex’s. In anycase, how do y’all feel about it?" This is my fav bit... sure the killer is still playing the game as usual but we need to make sure they have no option to play in the way I don't like.
The comedy on these forums never ceases to delight.

The game is getting old so there are whiny veteran players who miss the old days and whine about it.
I take it I'm included on this one?
But honestly I wouldn't call it whining, I believe they are valid complaints. If you compare the game we have now with the game I bought in 2018, they feel like two different products entirely.
I don't necessarily have to like the direction the game has taken. As long as I do it respectfully, I can voice my displeasure about that.
Feel free to include yourself in any of the afore mentioned categories.
There is a difference between whining and constructive feedback... but lets not ruin a good laugh here.
Cheers 🥂

Exactly, they are trying their best to keep the game fresh and enjoyable, and OP just like you stated, they can't make everyone happy. This is an asymmetrical game, both sides have very different issues and mentalities, this is truly a case of not being able to please everyone. Anytime they make a positive, quality of life change to one side, the other is usually feeling left out and think that the devs favor one role over the other, when in reality they are simply trying to please their playerbase. Not everything in life has some hidden conspiracy under it.
https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3643708#Comment_3643708
While yes, it's true that some people thrive under chaos, don't go making the assumption that everyone is like this. A lot of people value enjoyment and pleasure, especially with something like a video game, where most people use it for a form of escapism from their daily lives. And yes, discussion videos are a strong medium for this game, but they are more niche and viewed by people who are actively in the community. The videos that get the most views and bring people into the game are gameplay videos of people messing around and having fun with the game, you can't have these if your playerbase and by extension content creators are unhappy with the game, it shows in their work when they're not enjoying themselves.
And there's always room for balance discussions, no game in history has ever been perfectly balanced, this is purely a pipe dream, especially for an asymmetrical game. If there's one thing I've learned in life, there will always be a contrarian, no matter how perfect things are or appear to be. You can never truly make everyone happy.
Not being able to please everyone is perfectly fine.
In fact its trying to please everyone that usually makes something please no one.
That's why the term "broaden appeal" often equates to the death of things as its a euphemism for rendering something so generically bland that it loses all character and uniqueness.
Making it completely uninteresting to all but the most generic of consumers and they don't tend to stick around long because they are quickly swept up by the next generic bauble they have to consume.
The fact that DBD upsets so many players is one of the strongest points about the game. It means, especially in the horror genre, they are doing something right.
-
If you have to start your thought with “this probably isn’t true” then it probably isn’t true.
No BHVR are unlikely to be intentionally screwing up their game in order to drum up conversation about it.

I think it's more that Survivors have learned to not allow the Killer time to position themselves properly.
Better to rush in than to allow the Killer to camp multiple objectives. If they don't give you time to identify that, then it's better for them.
maybe, but being eliminated early is a big cost if that tactic doesn't pay off.
-

That's actually a good point about the rise of proxy camping.
Maps being smaller increased 3-gen placements. It also made everything more condensed, allowing Killers to proxy better which in turn, led to survivors feeling like they needed to unhook quickly.
Used to be you couldn't hold gens and a hook, because maps were too big for that. Now you can do both.
I wouldn’t call it proxy camping per se when survivors don’t even give you the chance to leave the hook.
You’d think it’d go the other way with smaller maps, you don’t need to rush the hook as you don’t have to run that far to save.
Whatever it is though I feel like the impatience level is much higher than it used to be and that leads to bad decisions on both sides.
I can’t really blame an opponent for leveraging my bad decision to their advantage. Even if it means I or a team mate are eliminated early, I mean that’s the killer goal after all.
I’m not saying all “tunneling” etc is the fault of survivors but I can identify the opportunity to apply it as a tactic effectively and the situation to do so arises far more frequently lately than my previous game experience.

I played 3 games as survivor yesterday, i didnt touch a single gen i 2 of them, because i got tunnled the whole game.
I know, im a former killer main, thats not what im talking about, im talking about the killer finds you at 5 gens, and every time you get unhooked (not in their face) they leave their current chase (if they are in one) to return to you.
I even tried when i was on death hook, and no one else were hooked to hide, and as soon as the killer saw me they returned to me, the other team memebers even tried to offer them self as a new target but she (plague) would have none of it.
This was the reason i only played 3 games, where i normally would have played more (and i know im not the only one)... so no matter what you say, this is defo. hurting the player base.
In that case you are the chase guy and your goal is to out play the killer and sink as much time as possible.
There are some great examples of chase builds that can make you hard to track and heal up quickly meaning if played well you can escape from chase with some regularity.
I’ve always been of the mindset that if I have several games where the same thing happens I build to avoid that thing for a few games and it typically works.
-
Not really... the forum is where people come to whine about things.
- The game is getting old so there are whiny veteran players who miss the old days and whine about it.
- You have whiny new players who can't figure things out for themselves so they whine about it.
- You have the collective of players who've whined about the same things since the beginning, and still do no matter what changes, AKA the power whiners.
- There are more killers, perks, mechanics and features, which means there are more options to whine about than ever before.
- BHVR are always making and updating content and the game has lots of continuing support from the devs, so there is always something new to whine about.
So there is a lot of scope for whining, in fact its never been a better time to be a whiner playing DBD. Because if prone to whining you're spoilt for options to whine about.
Take it for what it is, a trivial and largely inconsequential discussion about a game... best enjoyed over a nice glass of wine. 🍷

Killer mains keeps saying that ^
And yet the game is still here going strong.
"Tunneling" didn't kill the game before and won't kill it now.
Maybe its the smaller maps but I remember a time when I could walk more than 2 steps away from a hook before some survivor rushed in to make a save.
Maybe built in BT just makes people think that unsafe unhooks are the norm?
Do players just double down on the ol "survivor rule book" and expect a killer to only chase the rescuers even when practical logic says it's the worse of 2 choices. I don't know but I feel like pre MMR days players just more commonly made better decisions than they do now.
I don't find as survivor that I get "tunneled" or "camped" that often but I also try to make smart choices that don't give the killer the opportunity to do so.
-
You know "proxy camping" is not a new phenomenon and the most egregious form of "face camping" has been largely dealt with.
It didn't kill the game 4 years ago it aint gonna kill the game now.
Maybe just try having fun outside of the singular experience of your version of the perfect game.
-
There are lots of videos online about how to play and play against the Nurse.
Also want to get really good at countering a particular killer then play that killer and learn what works and what doesn't from the killer perspective.
Deleting content is a bad thing, deleting it because people are too lazy to learn is worse.
-
How do you get notified of the change?
You mean you don't get the weekly lil personalized golden envelopes from the devs that highlight requested changes and come bundled with a small selection of fine chocolates.
I thought everybody got those???
-
Ah but like all complaints about bleeding out you both ask and answer your own question throughout the thread.
Bleeding out isn't holding you hostage and is not ban-able simply because there is a timer.
The bleed out timer is the solution to the very problem you are complaining about, you won't just lie there till you are forced to DC you'll eventually bleed out.
Is 4 mins too long? That's a different topic. I think 4 mins is ok because much shorter and you could bleed out during the game if slugged multiple times.
Its a balancing act between having enough time to not just die due to slugging while still having a mechanic that prevents being left on the ground indefinitely.
-
There is a killer bias in outcome (kill rate) but as has been discussed extensively that's not necessarily a bad thing given what the game is about.
As for gameplay itself, outcome is typically dictated by killer ability to manage time and apply pressure vs survivor ability to coordinate. That's why we see the disparity between solo and SWF games for survivors.
-
Play the offline mode against the bots. That way you can practice all you want.
I think "have to lose 100 games" is a bit of an exaggeration really.
Basic game sense applies generally to all killers, its not a stretch to work with just that till you get used to a new power.
-
Did survivors have any limitations in this tournament or was it all attenuated killer play?
Doesn't sound that fun really.
Part of the game is the risk that comes with early elimination, tunneling is countered by team play body blocking taking threat and interrupting chases.
-
All trend no substance. If I'm honest.
Impractical silly concepts that are supposed to be conceptually cool but are frankly just silly.
The half face gas mask basically a useless faceplate that fails to protect your other eye from gas. If the exposed eye was burned out of its socket maybe.
The cosmetic variants suffer from this too i.e. the one long pants leg look, which again is just silly looking. If the exposed leg was bionic or something to legitimize the missing leg then great but a pants design like that in reality would just ride up your arse and make you run bow legged.
-
Have you had a good run lately?
You may have just jumped a bracket and you'll need to eat a few losses to re-adjust.
I find its heavily influenced by when you play too, the players mid afternoon are a different breed from those at 11pm.

I guess I should have specified like a mid-chapter (survivor). Similar to what we had this round solo chapter killer(Chucky) and now a survivor mid -chapter
hmm well I guess almost anything can be a survivor skin really. So why not, they are a group of people thrust into the kind of deadly game that the entity might enjoy.
I mean attack on titan sits in the same boat, not like you could base a chapter on it who would the killer be one of the giant titans. But there were player skins so yeah from that standpoint totally doable.
-
Not really, those stories don't really have a central antagonist, when it comes to the game or set up itself everyone involved is both a survivor and killer simultaneously. Its kind of like a battle royal chapter who would the killer be given that everyone is a potential killer.
Can't speak so much for the maze runner here as I don't know anything about it.

True I just don't want to do it if it makes people angry since it is not needed so I don't do it anymore. It is a shame we have to dehumanise our opponents so much that we just treat each other as ai. I find people get too angry in this game but I try to look at it with different perspective recently as someone who felt similar.
Nothing wrong with being mindful of other players.
But remember don't compromise on your own fun too much simply because other people get angry at trivial things.
If tantrum throwers ruled the world and always got their way then nobody would have any fun... ever.
-
But you both asked and answered your own conundrum.
Don't get found first, play smart at game start. Getting found early leaves you open to getting eliminated early.
- you got found first and failed to evade the killer
- Your team mates failed to make a good rescue and take hits for you.
Furthermore what you describe about the game, it appears you ran the killer for at least 4 gens and then died which is a pretty full game of DBD.
I get it you died and are here to complain about it, but take a retrospective, you got to play a full game of DBD if you ran that killer as described.
"I did all the work" No your team mates clearly repaired gens which is part of the work you just got stuck in chase, kudos for being able to run a killer for as long as you claim.
Counter to the opinions being offered by others here... "tunneling" was not OP in this case because doing so appears to have lost almost all the gens in exchange for 1 kill. There is nothing OP about that.

Essentially its an in game gesture with no real described meaning or context.
Therefore your opponent is free to interpret it how they choose and while I'm sure plenty of people will either not care or brush it off, there are also plenty of people who want to think the worst of their opponents and interpret everything as toxic.
So no its not inherently toxic but that doesn't stop someone interpreting it as such.

You can't very well learn when your match is over on five seconds because the Killer saw you were new and targeted you lol.
No, the new player experience is absolutely miserable. You are thrust into a game with no real instruction, into an extremely toxic community in a game where you have NO agency if you're new.
You equating some emotional weakness to DBD reveals both your inherent biases and your age, respectfully. You sound like my grandfather telling me, "Just work hard, you'll be able to support yourself, what do you mean you hate your job? What do you mean your miserable? Your life is great, these kids today don't get to feel miserable, they have no reason to."
You view anyone unwilling to participate as weak-minded, which is not only wrong but extremely insulting.
"No, the new player experience is absolutely miserable. You are thrust into a game with no real instruction, into an extremely toxic community in a game where you have NO agency if you're new."
I think you need to find a new game it's becoming more and more obvious that you seem to just hate DBD.
Furthermore, again you equate losing a game to real life struggles as if they are equivalent. Hating your job and being miserable in life is not the same as losing a game of DBD. Your inability to separate these real stressors brought on by real life from make believe ones brought on by a game is very telling.
You take this too seriously and it gives you a very unhealthy mindset about playing and other players. The ageism displayed in your reply is evidence of this.
Its not mental weakness to recognize that you are getting upset over a game and walking away till you can play without getting upset, in fact that is mental fortitude simply because its self reflective and self improving. You should try it sometime.
