For me the biggest head scratcher is why they balance perks sooooo slowly. Most esports titles go through balance updates at a dramatically faster rate than DBD has, and in those games - mistakes in buffs/nerfs can ruin a meta where significant money is on the line. There is no such danger in DBD, and so many small, simple numerical adjustments to underused perks could add so much more replayability to the game. It's utterly bizarre, but I'm sure they have their reasons but it's unusually bad for an online game.
Other than that I think they do an ok/good job for the most part. That has always stood out to me and they've never improved in any meaningful way.
-
These stats are music to my ears, because some members of this community seem to live in a make believe world where killers are the losers at every MMR level - think of how low the survival rate is at the weakest survivor ranks (hint: it's worse than 11%) and then maybe consider that the next time you wonder why BHVR makes a change that benefits new player experience.
-
I like a variation of Scorpionz' (the best Pig in the world) build:
BBQ, Brutal Strength, Enduring, Pop
I prefer the extra trap/box add-ons the most personally, as they're easy to get value out of - but combat straps and the like are great too.

I'd much rather have the puppets from Puppet Master in the game, or perhaps Rawhead Rex, or even Cenobites. I do think the Other Mother from Coraline would be keen too, but given a real world look for both her and the Survivor.
Seconded, Pinhead sure, but Coraline/Other Mother would be amazing.
-
FNAF is a game of my kid's generation, so it's not really my thing. But it's not all about me - I'm all for Springtrap. I wonder if they would add it due to DBD being 18+ and Sprintrap being quite popular amoung little ones, but otherwise - why not?
-
I kept on facing so many hookrushers that I got fed up and started genrushing.
I tried to start a dance off, tried doing some group calisthenics and guided meditation, one time I even attempted to carry conversation in morse code with crouches, but every killer just want to ... kill me.
-
DBD is in an uncanny valley of party and competitive game mashed together in an asymmetrical multiplayer game. Because of this, it's always going to be absolutely impossible to balance. BHVR could try harder, sure, but even still the game would be far from making disaparate groups happy. It makes sense the game is the way it is really.

Just take kindred if you are playing solo.

I mean, the most recent survey suggested the idea of changing the current struggle mechanic to that of Pyramid Head's cages, which is something.
Cool didn't know that. That's something at least? In the end you can't force someone to play, but that's what DC penalties are there for. It's somehing you are free to do but you will pay a small price.
-
I think DS is great. It pushes killers to tunnel less, but still leaves them the option to do so if they want to take the risk. Personally, when I play killer I almost always assume every survivor has DS, and I'm fine with that. I feel I am less frustrating for the survivors to play against, I get more GG's post game and the odd time I do make the call to chance DS, there's a good reason for it and it's a tense moment.
-
I like it as a strategic option. It is a risk and backfires every now and then which is heartbreaking as a survivor but oh so satisfying as a killer.
-
It's an extremely simple way to circumvent the DC penalty and it renders dcing useless, thus trivializing the entire point of the DC system - so it's logical why the OP would be against it, it's inconsistent.
I think the problem is that the solution is not simple to implement. You can either alter it to make it try to detect an intentional suicide which could either give a) false positives or b) still get abused once people figure out how to trick it - OR - change the entire system so suicides on hook are no longer possible at all.
While I don't think option B is as bad as it first sounds, it's a really big change and I don't think it's one the developers are keen on making without putting some serious time and effort into it. Because of this, it could be awhile before we see any changes.
-
One for each role:
Super Sandbagger (survivor)
Touching any other survivor grants you a 5% movement speed boost fo 20 seconds, however that survivor gets a 5% movement speed reduction during this time and a loud notification.
Causes the Exhausted Status Effect for 60/50/40 seconds.
Cannot be used when Exhausted.
Bubba Bonanza (killer)
At the start of the trial, all hooks except the ones in the basement are destroyed. Hooking any survivor here puts them immediately into the struggle phase if they haven't been hooked yet.
-
It's difficult, nigh impossible to argue that Nurse and Huntress aren't the two hardest killers to play - after that I think it gets a little more interesting, though.
As a pig main I will vouch for her being easy to learn but difficult to master. Just watch Scorpionz' guide on Pig to see how many nuances and advanced concepts to getting the most of Pig there are. A lot of it comes down to how wide her playbook is, even the trap - while seeming braindead to utilize has a lot of wrinkles to it - namely in knowing when to pursue or leave alone people with traps/at boxes. Plague is a bit like a Huntress-lite as well. I've seen some really impressive long distance plague bombs pulled off by Zubat, who isn't even the best with her.
-
BHVR is surprisingly slow and conservative with balance changes, I'll give you that. I understand it's not an esport title so you can't expect that level of attention to balance, but it's not just a balance concern as it adds a lot more replayability to the game too when meta shakeups happen. I personally feel they should take a few more risks and not be afraid to buff the really weak perks on both sides, personally.
-
Hail to the king, baby.
-
As survivor - I once had a Nancy on my team who followed me around the map, working on gens with me, failing 100% of the skill checks, dropping pallets, fast vaulting over them near me, slamming lockers open/closed and once the killer came, ran straight into me and pointed at me. Pretty sure did it for all three hooks, though at least two for sure. Good times.
-
Survivor my favourite unpopular map is Hawkins, even if I don't escape very often. I also like tha yamaokas, though I'm not sure if those are concerned bad maps by survivors.
I'm colour blind so as killer most of my map preferences are shaped by that - by and large I find indoor maps the easiest to track scratch marks. I prefer The Game or Lery's.
-
I would just take a break or find someone to play with. I find the game much more fun since my friend got it, though that won't help you as killer.
Killer at weak ranks vs. non-swf survivors is most certainly favoured, based on limited data and anecdotal experience. It's red ranks and swfs where killer becomes weak. It's an insidiously difficult game to balance, and BHVR doesn't treat it like an esports title so you will liekly never see that level of balance.
That said - MMR changes are coming relatively soon it looks like. Those changes along with crossplay are very likely to improve the solo survivor/killer experience. If you take a break now, be sure to come back when they come.

What's interesting is that many survivors bring keys to use in case the killer brings a mori. You are both to blame in this case.

Because the Pig excels at camping hook. All you have to do is stand behind a nearby structure, crouch, look away from the hook to deny spine chill and just wait and listen for someone coming.
I try really hard to play in a non-frustrating way, but a tool is a tool and I will mix it into my post-hook playbook to keep the survivors guessing. If you don't camp hook the first 4-5 times, the 6th time will almost always get them.

"This new chapter will feature a classic license, one that has marked the world of horror since its inception."
I bring this quote up again and again. The 1989 film is based on a 1986 novella by Clive Barker. Maybe to some zoomers out there that was pre-industrial age, but in the grand scheme of horror fiction and even film, that's a very late entry.
So maybe BHVR doesn't know their horror history - or it's a typo because of a language barrier or whatnot, but if this statement is correct - there is virtually no chance of it being Pinhead, Pennywise or Candyman. Xenomroph would be the most plausible but still a big stretch. You have to look back further into licenses that start to fall into public domain. This raises new questions of course but it's something to consider. Frankenstein's Monster in the likeness of Boris Karloff while being a really uninteresting killer, would be the only killer I could think of that would fit the bill of being licensed AND there from the beginning. There are so many possibilities but it has a bigger shot than I'd have ever thought.
-
I think the add-ons are a big step in fixing him, but I would personally like more of a full-on rework, and less number tweaks. He just needs more identity, personally.
-
It's not a beginner-friendly system (then few things are when it comes to DBD), but it does have one nice side-effect of encouraging people to play both sides, which is good for the community. So I agree that it's pretty unkind to someone starting out (it took me weeks to finally clear my dailies), it does have one nice thing about it.
-
Another pig main here. There's not a lot of us really.
As far as how good the Pig is - I think most "experts" put her at lower-mid tier, though a lot of the time it's a matter of "I feel she's closer to mid tier than her position on the list lets on" - I think she could have a bit of a sleeper thing going where she is underutilized thus under-appreciated.
For tips - I would recommend watching Scorpionz if you want to see one of the best (if not THE best) pigs in the world.
From watching Scorpionz, some of the skill in Pig is in managing your terror radius but mainly in perfecting the dash and learning the exact situations it is useful in. Scropionz is so good that he can 4K consistently with Pig at the highest level.
If you are at a short loop the idea is to head off the survivor at the pallet and then make them guess which side you will charge them from. You can put your red stain facing one way while you are charging and then quickly turn around and dash the other. Also if you really put in the time you can master moonwalking with dash (going backwards) - though that's way beyond my skill level.
I put a lot of effort personally in using my crouch to get a lot of free hits, it's definitely a great idea to learn when you can have to crouch while approaching a gen to ensure they won't know you're coming. An alternative method is using Whispers + Monitor and Abuse, this way you can crouch when whispers activates before your terror radius hits them.
My build personally is BBQ, Pop, Enduring and Brutal Strength - I like to throw in I'm All Ears as well sometimes and replace it with Enduring.

If this game is making you miserable and suicidal, I would strongly recommend you take a break.
It’s a game. Losing isn’t important. Survivors blinding you with flashlights isn’t important. None of it reflects on you as a person or your worth to the world, so if losing is making you feel that bad, please take a step away from the game for the sake of your mental health. There are thousands of other games you can play that won’t make you feel that way.
I can second this. Can't say I have ever become suicidal but if I play it too much in too short of a period of time I start to get really miserable. That's when I cut back heavily and recharge my patience for the game. It's definitely a game that can get to you if you let it. I have burnt myself out three times now, though every time I come back it's a blast to play again - so don't be afraid to cut back a lot - especially with the new licensed killer coming.

Just do what we all do, test different killers, take the losses, don’t let any negative remarks from the opposing team bother you. After several reps of gameplay, you’ll eventually start winning. Playing VS red survivors would be the best way to learn a new killer, you can practice and improve
Once MMR is implemented I honestly don't think it will be too hard to fix the situation. That way BHVR can keep one queue and promote playing off killers for those who care about their rank. Seems like an easy win for everyone - whether or not BHVR will do it is another story obviously.
-
They are changing over to an MMR system soon, which will give them more flexibility to make these sorts of changes easier to implement.
One potential way of doing it as well is to have an MMR for every killer, and then an overall MMR for the player as killer. Then, when matchmaking - average out (or whatever) the overall MMR with the killer-specific MMR. This way, really experienced players who only play an off killer every now and then won't just get a bunch of noobs they can crush, but still face weaker players then they normally would.
-
More survivors in chat = more salt from them. This statement is ridiculous and you know it.
-
Nice work formatting the picture and yeah - sounds par for the course if you get the wrong swf, unfortunately.

So you don't know what "disproportionate" means, I take it.
No I think I do. When you have 4x more players, you have 4x more salt overall - make sense?

I also play both sides (mostly survivor) and it is disproportionately survivors.
I would imagine it would disproportionate as there are 4x the survivors.
-
Didn't read the whole discussion but I thought I'd give my two cents. Proxy camping is a technique used by all of the best killers I watch on stream. Generally speaking if a killer doesn't have a clear target with BBQ, they will hook a survivor, make rounds to the nearest gen or two if they're close enough and then loop back toward the hook if not. Killers typically won't completely give up a hook unless they find someone else to chase or have a higher priority gen they need to protect further away (or if they're playing a killer with mobility)
-
I disagree personally, though I have no aspirations of ever being a red rank killer. At weaker ranks you can get away with playing friendly and fair to everyone, and still get a good amount of 4ks. You will get the odd salty team but in my opinion it's worth it. If you want to be Rank 1, well either you have to be as good as a top streamer or you have to play a lot more ruthlessly to make up for it. That's not for me personally - in part because I'm colour blind and can't see scratch marks on over half the levels, but if you want to get to the top, sure - do what you need to do to win.
-
I usually get irritated if we get an early dc and the killer mori's the team and I depip then they 'gg'. The same is true when I am killer and a red rank SWF on comms teabags and blinds me the entire game and then they 'gg'.
I try to be a good sport otherwise, though myself I only gg if it was a close or interesting match for both parties.
-
Yeah that's what I read as well. From what I could find on Dracula, there was a license when Lugosi was still alive - perhaps just to be able to market the character with his likeness. Can't find anything after that. Dracula looks like a safe bet, Frankenstein's Monster yes but if they want the Karloff version they will have to probably work it out with Universal.
-
From what I have read and from my own interest in the genre, only the popularized likenesses have any potential copyright infringement basis. The actual characters themselves - at least dracula and frankenstein's monster - are public domain.
For what it's worth, your theory does hold some water still, as they did say 'since (horror's) it's inception', and not many characters go as far as back Shelley's creation.
-
It used to be Hex:Ruin needs a rework - boy did people hate that one. My request was actually the most downvoted suggestion on a reddit Q&A poll, and then like two weeks later BHVR announced the rework - I definitely sipped some wine and laughed maniacally at that.
I think my same old complaints about the terrible and sometimes neglected new player experience. A lot of people don't think it's worth BHVR's time or effort. That's a valid opinion, but I think mine is, too.
-
The logic used above for the 0-1 loss, 2 draw and 3-4 win is pretty solid, and will likely have more of a bearing after the MMR changes. It is important anyway because it seems to be the metric that BHVR uses above otherrs to determine viability of different perks and killers.
A 3K is generally a complete win for a killer because it usually just means the last survivor got hatch which is not at all a bad thing as a killer should not feel pressured to slug and play lame to deny hatch.
A 1K isn't really a draw for a killer because any killer can just camp a survivor and usually get a 1K - that's both frowned upon behaviour and not an indication of any level of skill. Also if a killer does nothing all game and gets a lategame hook, especially after EGC - it's much more likely it will result in a sacrifice, especially at weaker ranks.
So yeah, I think it holds up really well. Of course the longer answer is "it depends" because there are way more factors to consider, but to keep it simple that rule works most of the time.
-
I think with a few tweaks the perk would be fair and fun to go against, maybe even gasp healthy for the game.
If they added another incentive to cleansing totems and notification if all totems were cleansed noed would be sitting pretty good.
Maybe an incentive like (global -8% gen speed at start of game, +2% global gen speed per totem cleansed)
-
The only thing I think that's objectively bad about doc is that he preys on new players. Doc on meat plant vs. rank 20's is probably the closest thing you will find to 100% 4K statistically, if I had to guess. Poor baby survivors will get eaten alive.
-
The counter is doing gens, however at weaker ranks camping will usually net you a 3/4k pretty consistently.
The reason is that weaker players are less likely to have the situational or strategic awareness to understand that a killer is camping and that the only counter is to ignore whoever is on hook and rush gens down, before it's too late. There's actually a pretty small window, especially if the players struggle to quickly find gens and sometimes miss skill checks. You will find problems like this all over DBD - that new player experience is a very different thing from what is experienced than elsewhere.
The only real solution is just to keep on playing and rank out of playing with weak players, unfortunately.
-
I think they more or less were just complaining about freddy being freddy.
-
@BeardedMenace said:
You're complaining for nothing... It's not getting fixed, ever... Why? Because once they release the new Match Making they literally said it won't look for Rank. You're going to be put with anyone/everyone just to make lobbies get into games faster. So if anything you need more practice, because it's only going to get worse.
It sounded to me like they were going to introduce an MMR system instead, which should more accuately reflect skill over a long period of time. People will still complain about similar things however because it's DBD and it's probably always going to be spotty with MM - with that I will agree with you on.
-
I can relate I really can. I'm in an especially bad spot right now, where I am close to hitting Rank 1 as surv, so I am super sweaty right now and every game takes all of my effort (I normally just chill out and play around as surv), or I play killer around your rank and have the same problem you have. It has been especially bad lately - I am facing so many red ranks and swfs - I feel sort of trapped in the corner:
Play survivor and tryhard, something I don't enjoyed doing as survivor, at least not every game
Play killer and get stomped by a SWF or red team most of the time
Neither is particuarily appealing to me. I'm just hanging on right now until the next killer comes out (and MM fixes, come on baby!)
-
She's the only killer I seriously play (100+ games on her) and I find her fun enough. She has a complex kit with more of a swiss army knife of tools, so that more dynamic playstyle may or may not appeal to you. She has three mechanics that are all unique and have to be mastered to do well with the killer, vs. the one that most killers have (even if none of them are super complex or anything).
The one warning I give is that she does have built-in RNG, and games will be won or lost based on it sometimes, though it's not as often as you might think. If you wanna get into her definitely check out scorpionz on twitch to see how the top Pig plays.
-
Outside of extremely accurate matchmaking and long queues, the only solution I can think of myself is making two queues for killers, with a BP bonus and different pipping algorithm if you choose to play against SWFs. There are still many problems with this solution ,however.

"Marked the world of horror since its inception."
So perhaps a classic killer what if perhaps we're going to something thats been in many forms of media i.e. novels and such say, dracula or wolfman or something of that ilk.
I pointed that out too as a lot of people are overlooking that statement. The problem with that statement is that it doesn't make much sense. Horror is easily over 150 years old as a genre so I am assuming they mean horror movies, which aren't quite as old. Even still you have old films like Nosferatu. The problem is that none of these things are licensed to my knowledge. I would be curious to know the oldest horror IP. While I am sure there are a few outliers, I bet Stephen King is probably about as old as you get.
Not even close to the inception of horror, mind you. So either A) They made the statement in error, or B) It is a classic horror monster and is public domain = doesn't sound very emotional.
-
Score doesn't always translate well in a situation like this either, as the red rank can end up running the killer for an extended period of time, resulting in them going way over 8k Boldness and not getting a very high score. I've had that happen a few times myself when going up against a baby killer and see it on streams too.
When playing killer I can also reliably predict who the red ranks are before I check the name, especially Rank 1's (post-game). Baby survivors play like they are afraid, Rank 1's usually act like they are playing a sport or having fun - very different feel and challenge level. Obviously there are outliers but I find it relatively accurate.
