Just popping by to mention that these only shows sacrifices and escapes that attributed towards the completion of Tome challenges over the past year. This is not kill rate/escape rate and should not be treated as such.
Is it a safe conclusion to draw that survivors are basically throwing matches when they have Archive challenges to complete? The "escape rate" and # of gens done during challenges seems to indicate that is the behavior being shown.

I don't care if you "don't remember". It happened, and we even have people on the forums who will still complain about disconnecting not because of the killer, but because of other survivors.
88% kill rates doesn't scream "unbalanced" because again, these are all time statistics. Statistics that were gathered over 4 years which does not represent the current state of the game now, and statistics which have absolutely no context behind them.
You are basing the entire notion of a game's balanced based on a number and a political narrative and nothing more.
Quit being biased.
If I'm not mistaken I believe the stats being posted to social media are for only 1 year, since the Rift came out.
-
I don't care how biased any "killer main" is; with an 11% survival rate and average of .16 gens done per match, there is no way BHVR would balance/allow such poor survivor performance. Assuming they haven't intentionally manipulated the data to show the game is grossly 1 sided, my best conclusion is that their data collection is flat out broken.
-
I normally would not self-promote my own question, but for the Q and A, I immediately put in a question regarding the Rift and its length/difficulty/frequency. Perhaps if enough people upvote it or comment, then maybe they will address the question on the upcoming Q and A.

I understood why they put the serums into the Rift last year; since it was the first Rift, they wanted to ensure we would play the new content. But with the lack of mention of the serums, I fear they will simply add some of the Halloween skins to the Rift and split them among the free and paid tracks. Not only that, but without the serums, we can't use them to by the older Halloween skins.

But there's only so much you can do to present them. At the end of the day, they can't post ALL of the data, so we always miss out on a lot of important context.
Even then, a lot of things happen that skew the stats, and the stats themselves may not tell the full story. Nurse by far has the worst kill ratio than any killer, but she's obviously not the weakest killer -- all of her bugs may be negatively effecting that kill ratio even further -- but again she's not the weakest killer.
Or what happened last time -- every match I was in where there was a Freddy or a Spirit, one or two survivors on average would either DC, or kill themselves on hook (mindful that I was one of the survivors in the match so out of three others survivors, one or two would do this), which woefully skewed their kill stats. Hell, some survivors after those matches admitted to doing this just to inflate their stats so they looked more powerful than they actually were and would get nerfed.
The things you mention, dcs/ killing on hook, are games/ kills that should be filtered out depending on what has happened during the match. I'm not saying it is easy, but including them was incorrectly inflating kill rates. They also like to combine data in strange ways and don't want to do breakdowns via region or platform.

The plants will only spawn if someone has the challenge activated as far as I have understood it.
So if no one has the challenge selected, there will not be a plant and they were talking about how this is a new form of challenge that they might look further into independent of Blight event..
Interesting, I didn't interpret it that way, but that sounds plausible as well. I'd be curious if there might be some issues with someone never completing that challenge and always generating the flowers.... or if they make a different kind of challenge of that nature, would it spawn both types of special interactables if two people have 2 different challenges?
-
I would also like clarification on something else they mentioned: From my understanding, there are Archive challenges that will require interacting with Pustula plants/hooks, but since the event only lasts for 2 weeks, and thus the Pustula Petals offering will be then be disabled, does that not lock those challenges out "permanently" (or at least until the next Halloween event)?
-
@[Deleted User] said:
Everytime they show stats, people woefully misinterpret them and use them as evidence for their own agenda. BHVR doesn't want to put up with that stuff, and I agree with them on that.
The stats are misinterpreted because they are presented incorrectly or have some ambiguity. Ignorance also, can never be erased, so I say, bring on the stats.

They already have something to pressure them: idle crows. But they can get around those.
But a timer would be unfair for both sides. What about games that legit take a long time?
And when the timer runs out, who wins?
If the killer wins, then that promotes killers protecting gens and ignoring chases.
If survivor wins, then that promotes survivors to purposefully hide and wait.
I'm glad you asked.
1) Idle crows currently are completely ineffective at preventing trolling survivors from hiding in corners of the map forever. Even slight movement resets the crow "progression". Perhaps, at some point in the match, the crow mechanic changes to require some minimum number of actions (charges) to happen to prevent them.
2) What is a legit/reasonable amount of time for a trail? I was thinking either 20 or 25 minutes would be a good maximum amount of time for a trial. This should be more than generous to get the gens done.
3) Winning is not really defined in DBD, but to answer your question, the survivors would all get sacrificed. Why? Because either they are trolling by not progressing the trial, or the killer is doing an exceptional job of preventing gens from completing. "Protecting gens and ignoring chases" This is common practice in early game to prevent gens from flying immediately, and should really be no different in the mid and end game. If a killer wants to try an run to the clock with a hardcore 3 gen strat, it is basically the same thing as what they can do currently, but the trail eventually ends.
EDIT: O good, I'm glad this thread got thrown into the oblivion side of the forums where nobody will read it.
-
Disagree. Having some sort of reasonable timer might actually put a little pressure on the survivors naturally. I'd consider that a good thing.
-
My one true wish for DBD is that Myers gets revisited and updated to be stronger to be more competitive at higher levels of play. I know he is currently strong in the right hands, and has some addons that are probably considered OP, but most "vanilla" games of Myers are basic M1 chases.
Personally, I'd love to see some improvements in his EW3, and for survivors to "regenerate" their stalk over time.
-
Very interesting read! I was curious, was the 4v1 nature of the game a factor in your analysis (I didn't see it mentioned in the summary)? Purely by nature of the game requiring 1/4 the number of killers vs survivors, would that modify the predictability of any individual choosing survivor or killer?
-
The Devs have data and statistics that only they have access to that they make balance decisions around. The reason the community is "ignored" is because the community does not get access to that data, and changes the community suggest likely go against something they see in their data.

Ok first of all the rift is not designed so that someone who plays here or there will complete it. If you play about 2-4 hours a day average PLUS complete all 4 levels of the tome on both killer and survivor challenges. You do not have to pay for the battle pass till you get to tier 70 and you STILL get all the pass and cells back at that point. this is optional they did not have to do this, and in the long run it is free. 4 times i've paid 1000 auric cells, 4 times i've gotten 1000 back. so i've paid 2.50 for each rift so far. If you want something you have to do what is required to get it done! Nothing should just be given to you!
The cost of the Rift should be 0 Auric Cells. Why? It's because of the sunk cost incentive that screams inside people's minds that they can recoup their losses if they play MOOOOOOREEEE! Long after many of us have had our fill of DBD for the day/week/month, the Rift beckons to be grinded. The Rift should have been modeled after the previous in-game events: A short diversion from the base game, time limited to only a week or 2, no cost to the player, and achievable with a reasonable amount of play time. The current Rift system does none of these.

@Gottlos said:
With the rift closing today I am rather surprised to see I am still 5 tiers from completion and was curious to see what others thought about the level of effort involved in being able to complete the rift.
I will admit that I play DBD more than a little, easily 5 out of 7 days a week for at least 1-2 hours.
I also have played for a LONG time, slightly ashamed to admit 1700 hours clocked in over the years. I say this to highlight that I typically have no problem completing Archive challenges and consistently participate in high XP and BP games.
I believe the motivation of making rift fragments so hard to get has to do with BHVR wanting some money for the premium items, WHICH IS TOTALLY FINE. However, it would be nice to not have to no-life this game just to get a sense of completion.
Some ideas for this:
- The rift pass awards bonus rift fragments(motivation to buy it early)
- OR You only receive a portion (3/4 or even 1/2) of cells back, not all of them
- OR Decrease number of items in rift
- OR Decrease shards required for each level
Obviously, I would prefer the rift pass bonus because I get all my money back but I think a combination of the bonus + only receiving a portion is good for the player and BHVR.
What do you think about the current rift progression?
Inb4 gEht GuD nEwb I diD iT JuSt FinE. This convo is for the rest of us.
I'm going to chime in simply because there doesn't seem to be enough support for your position in this thread.
To put it bluntly, the rift is far too intense (grindy), far too long, and come far too frequently, all at the same time. If it was 2 out of 3 of those, maybe it would be reasonable.
To all the naysayers that keep parroting "I completed it just fine so it's not a problem", your response lacks respect for other people's time and lives. 2 hrs of play per day is NOT sufficient to complete the rift. It's closer to 1.5 hrs /day of IN TRIAL TIME (does not include queue times, loading time, spending BP times, and only counts the first 10 min of the trial). The fragment manipulation they've done with the tomes is ridiculous, just to give people a false sense of security, since the first few tomes were "easier", thus creating the precedent that the time investment would remain the same for all rifts. It is abundantly clear that they have made the rift harder to complete, and just because some people can nolife play the game regardless of difficulty, doesn't mean everyone else can.
-
If the loser ggs then the winner can gg back. Winner should never gg first.
-
What if Demo's portals were only "exits", and he could begin the teleport from anywhere? That would significantly reduce the amount of time needed to complete a teleport, and give more options for where portals could be placed.
-
Your idea has some good ideas, but it really doesn't need to be that complicated. Simply add a timer 20 or 30 min long, and if it expires, all survivors get immediately sacrificed. Or, if a survivor has not performed any actions towards their objective (repair gens/heal teammates) for 5 min, they are revealed to the killer.

That's not what I said, at all. Being an adult means being able to deal with your emotions, not to suppress them. Being taught to repress emotions instead of learning to deal with them is why men have such a high suicide rate.
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1657832#Comment_1657832
You're right. I was dismissive and I apologize.
My point, which was later properly worded by @Todgeweiht, is that if the rifts are making some people miserable, then they need to stop doing them, because it's clearly negatively affecting their mental health. At the same time, they need to push for changes to the rifts that can make them better for everyone, but first and foremost they need to take care of themselves.
Games are supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, it's important that you stop and find something else to play, or it could very easily grow into an addiction.
Funny, I thought I was being an adult by not skirting my responsibilities as a husband, parent, homeowner, and full time employee, and not "no-lifing" DBD every night. I can agree that dealing with emotions in a healthy way is a good thing. I don't think my original post implied anything serious about my mental state, just my disgust in how the game has become too much of a chore (for me).

You play "2 games per day" as a minimum and you're getting burned out? Sheesh!
I finished the rift days ago because I did the challenges-didn't even finish em all-which actually made this occasional dumpster fire game a lot more enjoyable 😑 "oh well, another dud trial-but at least I got a challenge done" I said over and over 😃
2 games was the minimum, not the average. The first 3 Rifts took me about 100-110 hrs of gameplay to complete over the course of the 70 days. I'm sitting at 115 hrs for this current Rift, and look like I have about 19 hrs to go if I want to finish it.

Please explain how cosmetics (outside of blending dark ones), belt and hook charm cosmetics is helping you "win" the game or specifically any gameplay interaction?
The closest thing to "pay to win" in DbD is the existence of Licensed Killer/Survivor perks that are time locked from F2P players through Shrine, as that has direct gameplay implications (Would be more willing to be critical around those mechanics). Heck even arguing that the bloodpoint grind to access each teachable and have them available on all killers or any one survivor would be a valid complaint in my eyes.
The cosmetics are very low monetary "cost" in exchange for the number of cosmetics you would get compared to buying specific ones directly. Time is Money is the common concept that comes up around Pay 2 Win - but the grind here is for "cosmetics" specifically not for reaching a specific end goal of a gameplay build.
You obviously enjoy playing the game - and even go about to finish all the tome challenges but feel that the last 50~300 game push is too high of a grind... I understand your feelings but you've already significantly reduced the price of finishing the rift by buying those levels of cosmetics (by inherent design of battlepasses) by playing the game up to that point. It's not time wasted no matter how you spin it because you're still recreationally playing the game naturally not under gunpoint...
"Being forced" to see those rift notifications and participate in the rift "is not" a bad thing. A lot of players actively forget to set their next challenge even with those notifications, missing out on potential bloodpoint/time value if they aren't planning to 100% each tome anyway. If all you are asking for were to be able to turn off the notification that covers your text box at the end of each game then I wouldn't even respond to that QoL suggestion (but that's not your topic's main concern even though you brought it up twice now).
"But I shouldn't have to play any further nor should another rift come up if I want to take a break from the game for a significant amount of time (more than the current time inbetween rifts)." While that's already a subjective amount of time as it is - it's the same as overworrying about not logging on at a minimum of every 3 days to finish dailies. These things can be viewed as a bonuses as intended, not a chores... it's your perception that does it.
You also admitted that you're not going out of your way to "buy" every single cosmetic available either because obviously throwing those up on an ad when you load up the game is "predatory" as well, but not being able to receive a charm or final cosmetic is a "must" now without shelling out a few dollars worth of auric (significantly less than not playing at all and just buying the entire rift pass.. but who plays cosmetics for games they don't even play?). I'm still trying to point out to you and other players who complain about the rift grind that it has NO direct implications on your gameplay, if anything it helps your bloodpoint grind significantly just by participating.
Buying that first pass (maybe even this one) was a value preposition you "decided" to subscribe to, more transparency on the numbers would be "ballpark estimates" by each player anyway much like the projections players go out and do since the information IS available even before your purchase if you wish to crunch them.
Edit: I don't see how having MORE time where there are less active players in a game where you NEED those active players to form matches is any healthier for longevity and keeping the game alive. Personal mental and physical health isn't and should not be on the onus of the gaming company but something you have to police yourself and step away from video gaming if it is negatively impacting you. If you are living a healthy and working lifestyle - you just play to have fun and "choose" to drop money on additional cosmetics like any other microtransaction in this game (whether microtransactions are predatory isn't even the argument here). The rift COMPLETION is fully optional whether you were "forced" to participate in it or not and earn some free bloodpoints.
Winning in my post did not refer to winning a particular trial, it was about completing a goal, in this case, completing the Rift. Paying for Rift tiers is what cheapens the goal and the overall experience; buying Tier 1 is the same as buying Tier 70. Again, my point is that I've already invested a bunch of time into the game towards completing the Rift (by playing daily when I could have... not played daily) and will likely fall short of the completion goal simply because the latest Rift is artificially longer than the previous ones. My playtime habits have been consistent for this and all previous Rifts.
You do bring up an interesting point about trying to keep the player numbers high to keep the community healthy, and I can understand that. I don't fault BHVR for trying to keep the active player count high, but grinding purely for XP doesn't make for engaging gameplay, and feel "forced". Is having an AFK Wraith good gameplay? Cause I've seen a bunch of those, no doubt trying to get to the end of the Rift.

As An adult I choose not to participate in the rift in any meaningful way. How do I do this you ask?
Firstly I don't care about meaningless cosmetics so I never purchase it.
Second I only do challenges but I don't go out of my way to do them and I only do them for extra blood points.
I don't care if I get rift tiers I care for blood points only.
You see you do have a choice to not let it get to you. Personally I feel those that feel they NEED to finish it want to blame a system rather than look into themselves about why they themselves feel this way.
I feel people are too quick to push the blame onto others for a decision only they alone can make. Its a blame shifting mentality for one's own issues.
You are attempting to apply logic to what is inherently an emotional problem. Again, I recognize that it is a partially self inflicted wound, but if the resulting solution to my problem is that I play DBD a lot less, or not at all, than I don't think that is what BHVR is aiming for.

@Orion has a good point that you don't have to do the rifts... they even specifically give you an option "not" to do them just like every other battlepass. If your need for "completing" everything is causing stress then I gotta wonder do you also own every other "cosmetic" in this game (Whether you like their look or not)?
Edit: The battlepass system is directly designed to increase games played by people "grinding" and "no-lifing" the game rather than going to something else and why it was so wildly popular in Fortnite and emulated by other companies. A fully multiplayer game that "requires" a reasonably active playerbase for queue times is only helped by this, especially since the cells allow renewal to keep those time-dedicated "value seeking" players. If you are shelling out cash to buy every cosmetic like the whale that microtransactions already target anyway - then buying a few rift levels shouldn't be hurting your disposable incoming any further than just buying every new cosmetic anyway
You can play normally as much as you think is fun and then buy the rest of the rift levels to complete the rift and even get "some of that auric cell" value back for getting the rest of the cosmetics. The grind is completely optional just like the cosmetics that come with it... it has basically no actual gameplay implications to finish the rift each time... the challenges are free bloodpoints and goals (albeit stupid goals at times) to help keep interest and reduce the sheer tedium, not making it worse.
I do not own all the cosmetics in the game by a long shot, however I DO own all the ones that have been given out as challenges such as David's Donkey Jacket, Huntress' Hound Mask, etc. Again, the limited time event is not really a problem, it's the duration of the Rift, frequency of the Rift and the intensity (grind) all combined that is making the Rift extremely unfun for me.
Another thing that I tried to point out in my original post is, participation in the Rift is NOT optional. Regardless about your attitude or willingness to play the Rift, you WILL participate in it, and you WILL get notifications about it ad nauseum. This is intentional to trigger an emotional response to continue participating and therefore investing in the Rift. The time you spend playing = time investing. Constantly moving the goalposts (the end of the Rift) by manipulating the number of fragments you earn is a clear sign that too many people were completing the Rift, and therefore they made it harder. To be fair, it isn't a bad thing that BHVR is trying to get you to play their game, so at some level we are all manipulated into playing DBD. The issue, as I see it, is that it becomes a chore to participate in, and that the Rifts are too long/frequent/intense.
Lastly, purchasing Rift tiers is essentially paying to win. At that point, why even bother playing at all? Could I afford paying for the whole Rift, sure. Is that a good use of my money? I'd argue, no, it rewards BHVR for what is a manipulative and borderline predatory game mechanic.

This is honestly putting it mildly for me. After grinding out the last tiers of the Rift, I've taken basically a month+ break from playing DBD all together since it wears me out so much. This has happened for EVERY Rift so far, and I can only see the pattern continue; except this time I'm likely not going to even get to 70 given the latest Tome has awarded less fragments this time around.

Oni doesn't get just extra particles when he enters his ability. his model also changes, though just slightly
I do not believe that is true. If it is true, then the changes are so subtle that it wouldn't be worth the tech to change the model at all, since it's not noticeable.
-
The face changing legion mask could be implemented by making the mask itself "blank" and using the Oni flames tech to draw the face into different expressions, i.e. FF mode, just after hooking, getting stunned, etc. Obviously the graphic would be much smaller and not as "transformational" as the Oni.

Couple of thoughts:
1) I am embarrassed on BHVR's part that they somehow have the spectator camera tied to the actual model of the killer, making spectating killers in KYF mode a complete catastrophe. It is beyond me how little effort they have put into KYF, and have allowed this bug to persist through multiple patches. (NOTE to BHVR: this is the kind of stuff we are taking about when the community BEGS for a "game health" patch/chapter. Fixing the stuff that gets forgotten about.)
2) Sound and DS bugs being introduced mid tournament? Can't even describe how gamebreaking and dumb that was.
3) Killer pick variety and killer build variety was still a bit too bland for my tastes. Otz was the true MVP of the tourny with actual off-meta picks and doing well with them.
4) Scoring. I have mixed feelings on the scoring. I understand by not awarding a point for bleedouts, no points for hook states, it discourages hard camping (but wasn't entirely successful) and discourages excessive slugging (also didn't really work). At the same time, I think the survivor's ability to deny the killer points by intentionally going into 2nd stage was BS, or not even attempting to find NOED and go for saves, thus denying killers more hook points.
5) Was 99%ing the gates not allowed? Might have been a good idea if a team had the balls to go find NOED and save their teammates. I have a feeling that with Hex: Undying being introduced, these survivor teams will need to spend a bit more time on totems...
Has there been any DBD tournaments whose killer pick format forces more killer diversity? Like, out of the 21 killers we have, create a pool of 5 killers (randomly selected from the 21) and for the 1st round of the tournament killer players can choose from that pool. Then in next round, take another 5 (randomly selected from the remaining 16) and repeat. Just a thought.
-
Because they want to reimplement the MMR system at any time they feel it is ready. There are patching issues regarding changing the killer lock which require a client side patch to update. This way, no patch is needed.
-
-
Do you kobe yourself on hook after Meyers gets EW3 twice in a match too?
-
I thought the MMR system was placing me way lower than it should have, and thus fought against a lot of low hour/less skilled survivors. I took the opportunity to complete all my Adept killer achievements (and am now very thankful that I did it before the MMR was turned off).
-
Scott's video was good other than the fact that he did the analysis backwards. Rather than analyzing each killer in succession, he should have done it by 1 category at a time for each killer, then repeated for the next category. That way he would more easily remember what values were assigned and how to reletively judge each killer in that category.
-
FYI, I was in this challenge earlier, had all 3 other survivors escape, and then got out via hatch. Got 0 credit.

A fantastic question, however, who has set the schedule to release patches and content at such a rapid pace? Not to mention how screwed the stats are when players throw games to achieve challenges (i.e. The archives). The never ending cycle of changes ensure that long periods of stability basically never happen.

I doubt BHVR has the manpower to give everyone a crash course in statistical analysis as well as bypass inherent biases in the human brain. Because no matter how you present the data, people are going to misinterpret it (just look at COVID-19 mortality stats for proof).
By that logic, statistics of any kind should never be released in any form, since they can always be misinterpreted and require an education to be viewed properly.

I think BHVR knows it would be a huge mess to release anything again.
BHVR should work to present the stats in a way that is clear and understandable in their correct context. It is their own fault for the stats being misinterpreted. Eliminating the stat releases entirely was just lazy.

The argument that there are balance issues with aura colors for color blind individuals being too easy to see is nonsensical. If the aura is meant to be seen, then it should be visible; regardless of the color chosen. The baseline visibility should be for colorblind persons.

What exactly is there to exploit from a husk? Going around with Agitation? Force them to auto struggle. Killer not eliminating the husk? Have them bleed out over time. It really shouldn't be so difficult to implement.

I didn't notice this was standard practice and had happened in previous rifts. I only pay attention to the Meg outfits cause she has all my survivor bp put in to her.

Always remember when reporting to send in video evidence also as without proof nothing can be done.
They do actively do something when they have the evidence. I've seen this happen on streams where a dev or mod is in the room and a cheater is in their game or they break the rules in the after game chat.
Reports are dealt with manually so the time frame is dependant on how many they have. Just think if in one day 10k reports are sent in and 500 have 15 min videos.
That is a lot to go through and why the devs ask not to report for silly things like camping etc as it slows the real reports down.
Am I the only one who thinks BHVR's reporting feature is a completely futile endeavor? Is the expectation that everyone is a streamer and records every game they play, just in case there a cheater? Submitting video evidence seems to be a ridiculous requirement. I could understand this being required before we had dedicated servers, but now that we do, how is it possible that the servers themselves cannot keep track of in game actions such as movement speed (the most common hack as far as I can tell), generator completion speeds, players teleporting, spawining of hatch, or beginning of EGC at incorrect times? Shouldn't the dedicated servers be able to record anomalous events like these and if a player flags that game as one with fishy activity, BHVR can use their own logs as proof?

To play the devil's advocate, what's stopping me from cloaking as Wraith or moonwalking after you as any other killer for 30 seconds and then downing you? Or even just slugging you for 30 seconds and then picking you up?
Any thoughts on changing the (existing) DS timer to tick twice as fast while a Survivor works on a gen?

The actual coding fix for the cakes was likely done very quickly. The delay is most likely caused by the fact that all 4 platforms need to have the update pass certification at the same time, so the fix can hit everyone simultaneously. Imagine the shitstorm that would occur if PC got their cakes fixed in a day (which is likely possible for Steam), but PS4 got their fix the following week because of Sony's certification process.

How about the DS timer ticks down twice as fast while a survivor repairs generators?

My only issue with Tru3's LF "experiment" is I've only see him using insta-saw addons in every video. The perk build is fine, but realistically, if LF requires his best addons to be "viable" or "high tier", then you have to judge all killers by the same criterion.

Ok, but... isn't that a bad thing? Isn't hand-waving away something as critical as people throwing the match basically invalidating the data they gather? The non-nonchalant responses to this seem like it's business as usual, and makes no difference for balancing decisions.

The summary is "Check out our stream at May 26 for reveal of the winners for community design cosmetics and new chapter. This stuff? We working on it, but, we can't go into details. That stuff? It's not a top pririty right now, but never say never. That thing? it was asked many times and answer haven't changed. Also, this is Donella, she is datawizzard."
Patrick also said that they measure stuff on a scale from zero to Matthieu's face.
That's all basically. Kinda boring stream, almost nothing concrete was said. Except that they're working on Clown rework, but no ETA yet. Soon™.
Thank you for being one of the only sane people to recognize the steam was pretty much a huge missed opportunity. Just about every question was answered exactly like you said. In case anyone is wondering, this last steam is a perfect example of why they don't answer questions by popularity normally.
