  • Yes, one of the worst and most unfun killers to go against.

Pretty sure it was changed because people complained about how it sounded.

There is no waaay they did this because of "PTSD" If that were true they would have done that for Legion.

Legion didn't have an unique music during their problematic release, my friend. They used the default themes.

If you wanna watch I dont have any advanced chat feature or nothing so I cant really chat while playing. My mic makes a crap ton of background static so i just keep it off.

    Well played, my friend!

Not sure if you managed to catch my last comment on stream, but I really liked the gameplay! I would like to watch the full VOD, whenever possible.

    Pretty straightforward so far.

    The Laura…..upset me. Greatly.

I've just gone into it completely blind, decided that was only fair.

Well done, my friend, great start!

  • Badham isn't that terrible actually, now that its variants are gone.

Badham 1 was how the map was intended to be, it isn't a guaranteed loss for killer.

Its not really wierd. Its strategic. For a few reasons:

    1) Goal post shifting
I could have posted any killer in the game and be met with "well you probably played X way" or "you must just only face x kinds of players"

I could have posted a perkless hag game 3 times, a perkless trapper twice, several plague games brown addons only, artists games, never sleep legion games…

And the goal post will shift. No reason to give information like that when its not really relevant as no strong S tier killer was used. As the tier would then shift to A tier, and then B, and so on.

    2) The opposing side provides nothing

Im not going to give all the information and not be met halfway with the issue. Sort of what my first response was to @I_Cant_Loop. Ill provide enough that I think is relevant, but if I see one side of the argument intentionally hiding or never showing any information then ill provide what I think is enough until I see something from them/the other direction.

Im not going all in and revealing everything, when I am not even getting anything in the first place; thats a good way to circle back to reason 1 above.

Two way conversations requires some good faith in both directions for that kind of information. Not one side giving all the information and the other side just "critiquing"

I think I’m done waiting for the rework and will start my SM journey as it seems fun even though she’s in a silly spot. You’re enthusiasm around her inspires me.

I only dinked around with her in her 2.0 version but think I’ll try something tonight 🤙🤙🤙

Do a 10 or 20 depending on work I’ll stream my struggles so you can critique me 🤣

@Pulsar it’s happening @GeneralV is converting all of us

I hope you have fun, dearest friend! She may be a bit weak right now, but she sure is extremely fun to play, imho.

As much fun for me as Old Freddy was, and that is saying something.

I'll be happy to watch your gameplay, my friend! And to turn you and @Pulsar into SM players, if I can!

    So be it.

Allow me some games to learn her.

@GeneralV, it would seem that I require your expertise.

Oh, you are in a ride for a ride, my friend.

A difficult but very fun ride, I would say. Skull Merchant is my favorite killer in the game, but she is in a rather difficult spot. I have a thread of my own that might be able to help you:

    @GeneralV said:

Greetings, friends of the Fog! I hope this thread finds you doing well.

So, I am asking this question here because I recently got back to playing Skull Merchant, mostly because I am a little bit tired of playing current Freddy while knowing full well that he was and should be way more fun than he currently is.

But I am no Skull Merchant expert, so I am requesting assistance here to make sure I don't mess up my own games

For added context: I was only around for the very last days of her original design. I did play the version of her that we had immediately prior to her nerfs (which I still think were extremely unnecessary and shouldn't have happened at all, she was perfect as she was, but that is a discussion for another time) and I thought she was really, really fun. Now, I am aware of the severity of her nerfs, but I still think she is fun to play and I want to enjoy her before the next rework which, if it follows the route presented in the last two design previews, will be awful.

So, do you have any tips? Strategies? Build suggestions? Any help is appreciated here!

I also recommend watching Pixel Bush's Guide on her if you have the time. It is really helpful.

But Dredge's also clashes, so it doesn't make sense to have double darkness. It actually makes the darkness worse.

Yep, but I think Dredge didn't cause any technical issues because at least he was making everything even darker, which is the point of the modifier.

Freddy's Dream World, however, is really bright.

  • @ChuckingWong said:

Surprisingly, my friend, I did play against her a couple times during the event. But yes, most of the time I'm the Skull Merchant in the trial.

If you see me as SM in the Fog, do say hello!

  • Hahahahahaha.

Well, my friend, to be fair I don't think the killer was the reason this time.

The only survivor who got claw trapped was Jill, and she didn't DC.

And hence why I say any event designed around increasing BP by doing the objective is bad event design. Events should not encourage doing the objective harder, they should encourage interacting with the event special stuff. The special hooks, the special gens, the special anything that isn't a sidequest? Should go. I also hardcore think Bloodfeast type bonus weeks should go, just make the game give us all more BP by default or add a multiplier on the end for the score overall. Make the objectives give zero extra points outside the norm, and just slap a doubling or tripling multiplier on the result at the end that goes for everyone playing, that cannot be that hard to code. They did it in Blood Moon so I KNOW it's not hard to do - and I hope it's what they do in future anniversary events. Then add extra things you CAN do for BP, like the Twisted Masquerade totems or getting and using the invites. Those are fine.

You know why they stopped doing the Chinese New Year and BBQ events? Because the way it was designed felt boring and added nothing new besides some stuff to get for points, everything was about pushing the event objectives harder and harder. You know why people seem to enjoy Haunted by Daylight and Bone Chill more? Because the bonus stuff you can do gives points outside of just doing hooks and gens.

Events should alter gameplay and add an event multiplier, NOT make the players want to sweat more.

While I don't disagree with you entirely, my friend, I do think the summer events should return, because I think those are nice.

I liked both Lights Out versions as both sides, I love that hide and seek aspect and want to see Lights Out a ton more than another Chaos Shuffle because the Devs don't know what else to do.

Bring Lights Out back, at the caveat that my beloved Dredge shouldn't be in it. It alters the environment too much the same way Freddy does. Why's Dredge allowed but not Freddy? Makes no sense.

Why's Dredge allowed but not Freddy? Makes no sense.

If I remember correctly, my dear friend, Freddy was excluded from the first Lights Out because the Dream World effect would clash with the modifier's darkness.

I do recall that I thought this would be fixed for the second Lights Out.

  • Speaking of DCs, my most recent killer game had two:

    image.png

The Adam with less than 10k points was running around trying to get a flashlight save… and not doing anything else. I guess he didn't really want to play, and once he realized I had Lightborn he was out.

The other Adam I have no idea why he disconnected. He unhooked someone close to my location, and since he was the unhooker I went after him, as I don't like tunneling. I hit him, he collides with a wall during the speed boost, I down him and he immediately leaves. He made a small mistake, but it happens. No need to DC.

  • Would reverting Skull Merchant back to 2.0 be considered a "slight change"?

If so, then her. And adjust one or two add-ons while we are at it, if possible.

Usually it is not intended that Survivor Perks give advantages to Survivors. Must be an oversight.

Jokes (with a bit of sad reality) aside, they most likely changed the animation to give the Killer a tell that the Survivor has the Perk equipped so that they dont get stunned out of nowhere. IF the vault is actually faster, then it is not intended. But it might look faster, but if it is only the animation, this is not really a big deal.

Sad reality of modern survivor perks, yes.

I'd like to see the game become more dynamic with less predictability. But I think something that would be equally worth investing in given how much the game has changed is something like a DBD Classic mode, which I know you'd also enjoy.

    Depends on when, I'd say.

While I would really like a classic mode, depending on which version you choose for it there is a lot of content that would be unavailable. Maybe it should be like Overwatch Classic, revisiting some of the most famous periods in the game's history.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3967089#Comment_3967089

Very good point. Although Killers that want a challenge have been saying for years that the role is too boring for them now too.

    I wouldn't, tbh.

There are some things in DBD I believe should never change.

  • @UnicornMedal said:

It's not a bad concept, just not really great for where the game is at right now. That's the issue with anything fun that can be added to the game though. It will always have to contend with the core issues of the game, no matter what it is. And that allows it to be negated entirely.

Interestingly enough, friend, the first Lights Out was available for only a week in February of 2024, and there wasn't anything particularly problematic back then, at least not that I can recall.

The only issue was how easy it was to tunnel someone in Lights Out because of no anti-tunnel perks, that was indeed a problem.

  • Hello friend, welcome to the DBD Forums! I hope you enjoy your stay.

In my opinion, the current state of the killer role is alright, though this will be perceived differently depending on which killer is your favorite. For example: my favorite killer right now is Skull Merchant and, due to her extremely severe and completely unnecessary nerfs from last year, playing her creates a different experience then, let's say, playing Dracula, a killer that a friend of mine plays and who is a stronger character than Skull Merchant.

However, outside of character-specific issues, and the matchmaking that has rarely ever worked properly, there isn't much being stacked against the killer role right now, I would say. The meta is getting a bit stale with Pain Res and DMS almost every game, but it is strong. Survivors don't really have anything that stands out as particularly powerful in their current meta that could make the game unfair for killers. And the new mechanics that will impact killer gameplay, such as anti-tunneling or anti-slugging, have yet to be made available.

  • @UnicornMedal said:

It's alright. Not the worst I've ever played. I didn't even give Lights Out a chance first time around lmao

Honestly, my friend, I think the first Lights Out was the best modifier so far.

This is a very unpopular opinion, I know, but I enjoyed a return to hide and seek and the occasional jumpscares.

The second Lights Out I really disliked, because the candelabras basically defeated the whole point of the modifier, imho.

  • @Langweilig said:

I‘m kinda annoyed by all the people who want to skull merchant him. He has plenty of counterplay. The only time you can‘t do anything is when you spawn on empty maps which we have too many of now, where he just jumps on you, but that’s a map problem. When this isn‘t the case he can‘t do much against good loopers (except kidnap tech which should be nerfed). You would wonder how effective hiding is against him. I have matches where I can‘t find people which is very frustrating. He only deserves nerfs that make him more skillful (for example: kidnap removed, hitscan hitbox reduced, window to start another leap reduced from 5 to 3-4s, range for grab attacks 10m, range for mobility 16m, minimum required distance for a leap 3m and mending time reduced to 8s when affected by the mark to make him less of a mend simulator).

Back to the topic: I watched the show after dbd so for me it is the opposite.

I don't think it is a case of players wanting him to get skull merchanted, my friend. Not even Skull Merchant should have gotten skull merchanted, and many out there agree that her nerfs were unnecessary.

But nerfs wouldn't be unnecessary in Ghoul's case. You don't have to make him powerless, but his current state needs nerfs. He is way too oppressive and leaves little room for counterplay, if any.

  • I completed the survey yesterday, and it really wasn't biased towards survivors. It was asking about topics that matters to both sides, such as play habits and the FNAF chapter.

  • @LockerLurk said:

Friend? It's been just as sweaty and nasty on Killer. This is how events go. Either you sweat and get points, or the other side does and you get no points.

    This is bad event design.

Average event experience in DBD, sadly.

Some players out there really do sweat as much as possible during events.

  • Yeah, four slowdown perks combined usually isn't a good idea.

A mix between information, chase and slowdown tends to be the best approach, but it depends on which killer you play… well, most of the time it depends on which killer you play. These days all you will really see is Pain Res + DMS combo and the occasional Grim Embrace.

I predict that by 2027, my dear friend @GeneralV will be a P100 Wesker main and boil over Survivor main.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/DEESZK6MFS5I/1000030347.jpg

I personally hated Pinhead with a passion but he grew on me and now I actually play as him occasionally as well as bought all his cosmetics before they left.

I always owned Pinhead but never played him and hated going against him - and I mean with a passion!

    Just remember, anything is possible...anything.

Hahahaha, that I can tell you it is impossible, my friend.

Wouldn't play Wesker even if he was the only killer available in the game. I really do hate the character.

As for Boil Over, well… while I do hate to play against it, the main reason why I wouldn't use it as survivor is because my survivor builds don't change that much. They are usually something along the lines of DS, Lithe, Adrenaline and Botany.

However, speaking of P100, my Skull Merchant is getting there. Well, P76 rn, but it is much closer than before.

  • If DBD could stop sending me to Dead Dawg and RPD, I'd appreciate it.

Facts! Sadako never needed a rework. If she had gotten today’s buffs with her OG design that would have been perfect.

Instead people shut her tvs off for free. Leaving me with no mobility, no condemn potential. I still love her but I don’t play her like I use to. The “Spam” Sadako we have today isn’t it for me. It’s very boring to play as from the killers side.

Yes, Sadako is a good example.

Never understood why there were complaints about her original design, I think she was fine. A bit on the weaker side, sure, but not every killer needs to be extremely strong.

The unneeded nature of the reworks is what's most concerning to me. For the past few months, almost every killer change that isn't making an add-on basekit has been met with immediate criticism from their mains as wholly unnecessary. How are the devs deciding that these are the changes should potentially go live? It's taking up dev bandwidth that could be used to resolve issues like the ones shown in the video.

    Edit: Grammar

For the past few months, almost every killer change that isn't making an add-on basekit has been met with immediate criticism from their mains as wholly unnecessary.

Yep. Knight and Clown are recent examples, and we've seen how that turned out in the PTB.

  • Yeah, I wish I could get it more often. I think it is a really fun map, and honestly it is among my top three favorite maps in the game.

  • @Vorahk08 said:

This is a good single reference for the problems Pinhead has. It feels like a consequence of the larger issue with killer balance right now, which is the focus on reworks. Bug fixes, minor buffs, etc. are all important to keep killers relevant, but it feels like the past few PTBs have been focused more around these large reworks that tend to get thrown out after the PTB ends. It's a problem. Hopefully Pinhead mains can make enough noise to get some of these bugs fixed, though!

issue with killer balance right now, which is the focus on reworks

And not just a focus on reworks, my friend, but also the fact that many of them aren't needed.

    Indeed.

    But I'm enjoying the event.

  • @UnicornMedal said:

That hasn't been my experience, but it'd make sense. We're also playing during an event as well. Survivors tend to crank gens out faster during them for whatever reason.

Usually it is because of Bloodpoints, as it is fairly easy to max out the Objective category and event generators usually award you extra Bps.

The problem is the pressure to perform and look good without being made fun of if you lose, which let's face it… some Survivor players REALLY like to do.

This is not just survivors that do this. This is killers as well. You need hump videos? Killers still do it today. GGEZ they still do it, threats and general over the top ____ yourself as well.

This is not relegated to only coming from survivors.

Ive had survivors gang up on other survivors as well in terms of "performance and looking good" and had to defend them from themselves as killer lol.

Its not this whole only killer is getting bullied by survivors story. I have footage and ticket submissions of this as well.

In comparison I can count the number of times a Killer has been a miserable little jerk to my friends and I on one hand.

Not my experience. Not the friend part of this, I play soloQ only. But there is a pretty even split from what I can tell from the "miserable little jerk" perspective on who is saying what to whom.

Obviously there is 4 survivors and 1 killer per match.

So you have to math this as a 1:1 ratio for each interaction.

Killer is always a lonely role (unless you're playing an AI Killer or something), so the feeling of several Survs backed up by their friends all mocking YOU specifically for not performing well enough or doing something they deem unfair?

Lonely role? Thats an odd way to describe your situation when you are against several opponents. Like you arent the "victim" in your matches as a role.

This is a pvp game its not that deep. When you 3v1 or 2v1 in games or sports you dont describe yourself as "lonely".

I dont call MJ "lonely" when he charges the rim 3v1 and breaks through guards and STILL scores.

Im not sure why you are using "lonely" when describing killer play in an asymmetrical video game. Its a very victim and depressing way of describing something.

Because try as some people might to dismiss those feelings in others, even if you don't react… that feeling still hurts a bit. It still gets under your skin and sits in your brain. It's actually psychologically painful and, if actual harassment is involved, even actively harmful. There's actually studies on both ladder anxiety in gaming and how online harassment in gaming can cause psychological effects that can damage a person, this stuff is real.

The other thing that causes this anxiety? The game itself. The game encourages always playing to 3-4k. The game gives increasingly better results in the endscreen for killing more Survivors. The community as a whole has taken 3k+ = win to its logical conclusion and actively blames any player who cannot meet that consistently. But, it isn't always the player's fault if they lose. Sometimes the map is bad, sometimes their perks were outmatched, sometimes the other side was simply BETTER. But the community always seems to infer "lose more = less skill" when these players ask for some reassurance, so of course they feel left out and like they're the problem.

After a while all this pressure to perform and bad experience with Survivors that actually DID mock them for losing, it takes a toll. Some quit. Some play less frequently. Some chase an endless dragon of 4ks they cannot possibly keep forever. If they stay long enough and find their niche they grow out of it. But the fact it occurs AT ALL and then when they go "hey this feels bad" people in the community dogpile them for it? Shameful. Just shameful, no wonder Killer players sometimes doubt their own abilities, grow a perfectionist complex, and play sweaty. Both the game and the community go out of their way to try and scare Killer players off by any means it can.

No one should be harassed, I’ve reported people myself.

You have a couple options though:

    1) if playing Killer for you or whomever this is describing ; is causing that much anxiety and pain. Like real world mental health reactions at THIS level, it might be time to take a break.

You have to set boundaries in these kinds of things. Not re-feed them and blow it off like it wont happen again, it WILL happen again, its a PVP online videogame. There is no perfect online game or perfect report system. Thats just the reality of things.

And again, this is not just survivors, I have had a pretty even split of this kind of stuff come from both sides.

Report anything over the top that is beyond game taunting; and then move on to the next match.

    2) Another option you have that fixes most of this is just closing the chat. Problem solved you dont even see it. Its available to everyone.

Last though and kind of important:

If someone is that emotionally shaken by how strangers in a video game perceive them, it’s worth stepping back and asking:

Why do you care so much?

Unless you’re trying out for a pro team or entering tournaments, this is a hobby.

Videogames are supposed to be fun, not a defining characteristic on your self-worth. If you’re not having fun anymore, that’s your mind telling you to reassess what you're doing and why.

This is not relegated to only coming from survivors.

    Yep.

Ever since I first started playing DBD I've encountered toxic survivors AND toxic killers.

Toxic players exist on both sides. The only reason people think survivors are more toxic than killers is because every match of DBD has 4 survivors and 1 killer, meaning you're more likely to encounter a toxic survivor.

If the game was 4v4, you would see them in equal measure.

  • Yep, just played an Autohaven match, in fact.

The stats don't show how people died or escaped. Surveys are going to be a mixed bag as that's people's opinions. You can just look at the forums to see how divisive (and other words) our community is. Streamers have their own opinions.

All this, and it doesn't answer the question. If people quit, how does anyone know it was balanced? Those streamers? They could have simply given up on learning to counter the killer and say "to op" for example. Giving up doesn't give data for balance.

I ended up migrating to OW as a result, and fell in love with Mercy and her original ultimate. Just my luck to love the first majorly reworked character..

thankfully in dbd my real true loves The Legion, even when it was commonly said they were the "worst killer in dbd". Thankfully my fellow Canadians have been aging gracefully :)

In DBD, my favorite map was also the first to get a visual rework: Léry's. Truly unfortunate.

Glad Legion is in a good spot for you, friend!

I had terrible luck with that in League, which is why I ultimately retired. I know it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all, but when I do love I love too deeply.

it's why ultimately I'm not upset that Cenobites been forgotten about, because you can't lose what's been abandoned.

It sure feels awful, doesn't it?

I just wanted to keep my OG Freddy and Skull Merchant 2.0, just 2 killers out of 40, don't think I am asking for too much here.

And now that you've mentioned it, my friend, I also had this terrible luck in Overwatch. Not just aspects of my favorite characters but also the game's format itself. But, in some capacity all those things that I lost eventually came back, so in OW there was a happy ending.

But in that same post you admit the trend continued "even if some of the worst offenders (such as the gen kick meta itself and Skull Merchant's first design) we're no longer around." A good amount of the major complaints sans tunneling and slugging have been in some way touched or addressed.

True. But some things do remain unchanged, friends, such as map design, which I think I mentioned in one of my responses.

The easiest example of a moving goalpost is Nurse. Ppl claimed that as soon as those extra blinks were removed shed be fine since it would just leave the skilled players who didnt need a crutch... then it was the range addons... then it was the cooldown... then it was that she could use basic attack perks. Even after all that, you STILL have ppl claiming BHVR doesnt nerf her. Every time they nerf an aspect that ppl claimed they'd be fine with her if she didnt have, they'd jump to wanting something else.

Well, to be fair, Nurse is a complicated example, since she ignores everything a survivor can do.

The problem is the list of reasons was endless. Every time and item on the list was checked off, the list would get expanded to add something else.

Well, friend, you might recall that we made an attempt to understand why, exactly, people were giving up all the time:

Greetings, friends of the Fog! I hope this discussion finds you doing well.

By now most of us have already seen that the Go Next Prevention mechanic was killswitched after the disaster that it caused when players got punished even if they did nothing wrong.

But I think that raises the question as to why such mechanic was added in the first place. And the answer may be obvious at first: the "Go Next" epidemic and the sheer amount of games where players decide to suicide on hook.

The answer is correct, sure, but I would like to propose a deeper discussion:

What was the origin of the "Go Next" epidemic? Why did such thing ever existed in the first place, and how did it reach a level so severe that changes were made to fundamental aspects of the game?

And if I were to share my own answer, I would say it was caused by a gradual deterioration of the survivor role. Because let's think for a second about the year I started playing DBD: 2018. Back then the game simply didn't have DC penalties, one could DC as much as they wanted to, with the only punishment being rank-related (the loss of a pip, if memory serves me right). And yet, people didn't disconnect like crazy every single game.

It happened sometimes, of course, especially with OG Legion, but I wouldn't call it an epidemic of its own.

However, back then there was more to the survivor role than there currently is. They still had proper resources, they didn't have to worry about waves and waves of gen-related killer perks, stealth was still a viable playstyle, killers weren't as oppressive, and the list goes on.

But we all know that changed in more recent times. Survivors lost most of what they had available to them, and nothing was really given. They die more often, their objectives are harder to do (due to perks), and generally speaking they have a worse experience. It is a lack of everything, and it seems to me that was the primary reason for the massive increase of hook suicides.

Let me know what you think, please share your thoughts, any feedback is welcome!

Why do you think the "Go Next" epidemic existed?

Based on this discussion, it doesn't seem to me that the goalpost was changed, mostly because many things that were causing frustration were not even addressed.

Going into micro oriented killers is imo not a bad decision, as they are widely loved compared to macro oriented killers. Dont get me wrong erasing the already macro killers is bad yes, but why would you as a bussiness make a product that you know will sell badly and that your customers have already told you very vocally they dislike?

Thats like having an ice cream shop and seeing that almost all your customers love fruit flavors, however 4 people really like exotic flavors, while you can still sell those people what they like, investing on creating exotic flavors rather than fruit ones is bad for bussiness.

Well, friend, I think then it comes down to a matter of preference. It is good for those who enjoy micro-oriented killers and bad for those who prefer macro-oriented killers. It is still very unfortunate for those who prefer macro killers, as very few new releases, if any, will be enjoyable.

However, just like you said, the killers who are already macro shouldn't get their identity erased. Freddy went through it. Skull Merchant is risking it, though thankfully the disapproval is being demonstrated loud and clear. Trapper and Hag have yet to be targeted, but they could be. And, honestly, I don't think this is acceptable.

yea, I say just revert her back to 2.0, no rework is needed

    I agree completely.

    That is the best option.

Yea i felt like it didnt make a lot of sense that they nerf'd her a 3rd time and did the 8-gen kick nerf at the same time. 2.0 Skull merchant was fine

    Yep, she was fine.

The 3 gen thing was over. The perks that enabled it were nerfed, the game no longer allowed it, and her kit was also not good for it anymore. Problem solved.

  • Unfortunately, there was always the possibility that this would happen.

Getting rid of "going next" without addressing the reasons why players would choose to go next in the first place, inevitably will make these players look for alternatives.
