I don't really see it as a "free" escape. The killer has the speed advantage, so you have to be very lucky with the hatch spawn and skillful enough to evade the killer in order to make a successful escape. The chances of escaping are still very low.
Besides, it's a fun consolation prize to play on for. If a survivor is dead at 5-3 gens, the game is essentially over and the rest of the team are just playing for BP, safety pips and hatch at that point. DBD isn't chess. It doesn't give you the option to resign an obviously lost game. So without the possibility for a hatch escape, there wouldn't be all that much point in continuing for a lot of players.
The hatch gives hope to survivors who have bad matches (often due to solo queue matchmaking) and doesn't remove a win from the killer. It might be the healthiest mechanic in the game.

Just because your teammates are sometimes bad, doesn't mean they should make your role overpowered to compensate for it. The problem there is your bad teammates. Name any other competitive team-based game, where having bad teammates means you should win.
This might be the only team based game I've played, where you need to work together with your teammates, but you can't communicate unless you go outside the game to do it. We get stuck doing the teabag version of morse code and hoping our teammates are over 100 years old so they can decipher it.
-
I see it reasonably often. It's still a fantastic aura reading perk. Maybe other perks are just more consistent.
-
I liked the envelopes that you could bring that the other side could also collect. It was a small gesture where one side could help the other side get BP. Even though it's similar to the other BP event offers, it felt more personal. I think the game should have more things like that. Also bring back the snowmen.

Because they decided to hang back and slow down the killer while the unhooker got away. Killers want the unhooker, you interfered and now you're the only one I have to chase. The unhooker is supposed to take aggro, your whole team is messing up and that's got repercussions . Also you're now teasing me with an early first kill because you'll probably come back to unhook whoever unhooks you.
Lighthearted fun is fine, so long as you're lighthearted about consequences. BT slows down the killer, but not if you give them the BT hit for free. Be lighthearted and run, it's also a game about getting killed. Still just a game, but you're supposed to run. The killer can make lighthearted choices, but survivors might get killed doing so.
It's not a bad game design at all, it's not designed to make you feel safe or let you get away with too much boldness. You're in progressively more danger throughout the trial, lighthearted or not, you have to play accordingly or you'll die.
No one's punishing you, killers are supposed to kill you. I feel bad if I'm too oppressive or feel like someone's dying too fast from bad luck, but I'm just playing a game where my main objective is to stop you. I don't care that much about winning, I'm not being sarcastic about lightheartedness, I wish all the players that seem to be upset all the time could be a little more lighthearted.
It's a fun game, lighten up, if anything in any game makes you upset, just take a step back and have a good laugh at yourself.
You're interpreting the excitement of the game with your instincts rather than your brains, it feels emotional because you felt danger, your body reacted and now that adrenaline has you pumped up. Feels like justified rage, you have to remind yourself it's not.
Lighthearted is the key. This game is exciting. IRL I don't kill people AT ALL. Too stressful, I don't even try anymore. Same goes for running from killers, I avoid them completely.
But this game isn't stressful so long as you can remind yourself that you're playing for the drama and excitement. Those things are why you come back, it's why you feel good when you get out. Take the good emotions as is, and realize the bad ones had no repercussions whatsoever. You rode a rollercoaster, get in line for another.
tldr: Everyone should be lighthearted about this game, but sometimes lighthearted decisions get you killed, which doesn't matter at all.
Of course, every behaviour or action in this game is situational. If an unhooked survivor body blocks with BT then they are fair game. But if someone decides to go after an unhooked survivor to punish them for what their teammates do, regardless of the circumstance, you can't really call that fair for the person being unhooked.
When I say bad design, what I'm saying is that the least fun aspects of the game should not be built into the game's systems. The easiest option to win should not be the least fun for everyone involved in the match. Because the majority of players will gravitate towards the easiest option to win, and if that option is miserable to play against, you have most of the players having matches they don't enjoy. Running a 3 gen with SM is incredibly effective at winning, but BHVR is changing things so she can't keep doing that because it's awful to play against. BHVR should build the game so it doesn't empahsize and encourage the least fun aspects of it.
In regards to your advice, when I see some poor survivor get grabbed at the start of the match, and abused on the hook till they kill themselves, I am not left with neutral feelings. I watched someone utilise this game's mechanics to grief the first person the found to the point that the survivor was willing to eat the DC penalty to get out. I shouldn't feel neutral about that. It's not about the game's mechanics, it's about how the player is using those mechanics to treat another person.
Lastly, being light hearted in DBD has never got someone killed. I assume you are referring to real life, but I'm fairly certain not being light hearted also gets people killed, so I'm not really certain how to respond to that.
-
@MrPenguin said:
No its not fair, but without it survivors would just hold the game hostage hiding because they don't want to die or to be spiteful towards the killer. IIRC that's why hatch and the EGC were implemented to begin with.
Imo replace hatch with something else. Getting rewarded a free escape and robbing the killer of a kill just because the rest of your team died and you got lucky just isn't something I agree with. Especially when the main reason why it even exist is due to the side you're rewarding being unsportsmanlike and spiteful.
I don't see any system that gives the killer a chance of a free luck based kill if 3 people escape. So its also unfair in that regard as well.
I think maybe you see this game differently than I do. I don't consider a killer who has won the match already as getting robbed by the hatch. The game says the killer won even if they escape. The game doesn't need to still be sweaty at that point.
I get it if you want the game to be really competitive, but I think the game has enough of that already, and the hyper-competitiveness is what ruins the game half the time.

I like the rift and the rift pass. Especially that it only has to be bought once and you can use the auric cells you get from it for the next. The cosmetics are usually pretty nice including some absolute masterpieces.
I also like the charms. I love to decorate my hooks and survivors with character specific charms.
It's cool you can buy it once and get everything else for free. I wonder if that adds pressure to complete it each time?
I keep forgetting about charms. I should run some.

Short answer: Its not toxic. People just have no patience for anything that slightly inconveniences them.
Long Answer: Slugging is not in itself. Most people who whine about being slugged aren't being left for 4 minutes, usually around 1 and 2 at max while the killer hunts down a hiding teammate. Are there people that leave survivors slugged for that time for no reason than to mess with them? Sure. But IMO that is no different than survivors tbagging at hatch or waiting for the killer to see them leave. Literally just scroll on your phone if you find yourself in that situation. You aren't being held hostage. The killer did not load up the match to ruin your fun specifically. They just want to get that final kill, which is part of the objective.
So toxic slugging does happen but it doesn't matter cos survivors teabag?

I don't play as much anymore, but there are ALWAYS extra tomes, 2x XP, 2x Rift Shards, store codes, etc that make getting to the end pretty easy.
For the last two years I only bought cosmetics to make my characters harder to see when in a bush (this is not a joke). Characters that hide well in bushes are David, Haddie, Dwight. So I stuck with their basic cosmetics and stuff I got from events ect.
Now I'm playing a mix of support and looping, so I decided it was worth getting something interesting for Haddie. Up until now she was stuck with the ugly Christmas sweater.

I love the hatch mechanic. Some of the most tense and heart pounding moments I've had in this game have been hatch escapes. I've had lots of fun and unbelievably lucky last moment escapes.
It's always sad to see a killer slug the second to last survivor to deny it spawning. Killjoys.
It's always easier to hear the hatch before you see it. That's how I usually find it anyway. You don't really need a perk to find it.
Yeah. I had a GF face camp each survivor to death and then when two were dead, he slugged the other dude and just followed him till he bled out. The hatch spawned under my ass, so **** him 😎

@Brimp said:
I get its a way to prevent the match from going on forever with the last survivor (which clearly is not the case as they could just start EGC after the 2nd to last survivor is considered dead). But the way I see it and the way a decent amount of people will see it is that the hatch is just a pity gate at this point.
Maybe the game needs a pity gate. Solo queue players would likely say so.
I kind of think the hatch is perfect as it is. Three teammates are dead. There's a chance you can find the hatch and escape. The survivor gets any opportunity to survive after the match has gone poorly, and even if they find it and escape, the game still says the killer won. It seems like a win-win. It comes at the cost of being able to consistently 4K, but maybe that's an acceptable sacrifice.
-
Honestly, if you are playing in solo queue, there's not much you can do to stop the killer from bullying someone. The killer has the power to target someone whilst in theory throwing the match. This mechanic will help some players out, which is good. But there's never going to be a way to stop a killer from griefing a single survivor.
-
@Butterbeeblack said:
Survivors can use the perk “left behind”, keys, and their much larger view to help them find and escape the hatch fairly easy. Killers seem to be at a disadvantage when it comes to hatch escapes because of their smaller POV, and no perk to help them find it, or keep it closed when they do. Is there room to level that playing field?
The hatch is not meant to be sweaty. It's a party game. If you got three kills, you won already according to how the game judges players. Plus it gives something for survivors who lose matches purely based on bad matchmaking to aim for at the end of a miserable match.
-
@Hanuka5 said:
When i play and I down the last 2 survivors, nearly allways they try to hide and slug themself for 4 minutes instead of just staying where they are and let me hook em.
If the survivors voluntarily slug themselves to death, how bad can it be?
It's just like anything else related to human interactions. It's situational. Slugging a survivor that runs boil over and goes to a part of the map where they can't be hooked? Not toxic. Downing all four survivors and just letting them all bleed out instead of hooking them? Toxic. People have to decide based on the circumstance, and not rely on their own bias to interpret other people's behaviour.

Unhooking a survivor itself takes 0 skill. Holding M1 on a gen takes 0 skill.
The game doesn't need to be super "skillful".
The one thing I would say is that easiest tactics to win as killer against solo queue and at lower MMR (the majority of the playerbase), should not be the ones that are the least fun to play against. The game should discourage the least fun aspects of the game by design. When it's the easiest way to win, it's even worse.
Casual survivors plays matches like this constantly as inexperienced killers almost always rely on these tactics, as they have no clue what they are doing and get easily frustrated. So you have have a large portion of the playerbase stuck playing matches that just suck. Getting out of low MMR as a casual solo queue survivor is absolutely brutal. The real fun as survivor only really starts when you climb the MMR ladder and meet killers who are confident enough in their abilities to relax and have some fun.
Casual survivors being stuck playing in this environment is genuinely bad for the health of the game.

This would still be better than the current version of xeno. Huntress can wait and mindgame, but this requires skill. DBD is slowly turning into a game that requires little to no skill with the killers released.
For example, Wesker is an extremely OP killer, however this is balanced as 1. you can see him charge up his attack and 2. he requires TIME and SKILL to learn how to efficiently use his power.
BHVR has recently been nerfing many perks and removing the aspects of DBD that require skill. E.g. hook grabs - killers no longer have to wait and understand if they wait they can get an easy down, and survivors no longer have to work together and fake the saves etc. This removes the ENJOYABLE aspects. Baby killers/survivors need to quit complaining and put in the hours to learn the skills required rather than making it less fun and less difficult for others. I understand it isn't fun to learn these skills at first - but for skilled survivors/killers the difficulty of chases and perks such as dead hard are fun (most times). Most recent buffs/nerfs are based on the assumption you are playing against a SWF too, making the game unplayable for lots of solo q survivors.
Of all the things to reference in regards to skill, you chose hook grabs?

I find some people Boop first time they see pig, some will do it mid-chase, and others might wait until end-game as to not disturb gameplay trying to memeing with Ms. Piggy.
I always go for it at the start of the match. Sometimes I don't realise it's her, as the TR is generic and I may not see who it is till later. But as soon as I see or hear the Jigsaw boxes I run out to find them.

Not many. Pigs are unpredictable, like wild horses. Sometimes, you just have to throw yourself at them and just let the cards fall where they may. Typically tho:
Black Jacket = Dangerous Main. NOT FRIENDLY. Stay Away; Red Flag if they use VT + R2 w/ Lethal.
Bloody Piggy w/ Bloody Weapon or BoS = Main, but will always be a gamble that they aren't just there to do a 4k run using Tampered Timer + CoG.
Thanks for the info, I'll keep an eye out for those skins 👌
I will take your advice and just keep throwing myself at them. Although I should probably give up after they hook me once. Usually I'll come off the hook and use my endurance to go for another boop 🤣

I always wanted to run DH back in the day. But it caused so much grief that I stayed clear of it. I'm 500 hours in and I have no idea how to use a flashlight to save anyone. I knew when I started playing the game that killer players hate flashlights, so I just avoided them. I don't bring items to the trial in general (unless I have to for a challenge). I do all of this to try and communicate to the opponent that I'm just here for fun. I don't want to sweat or troll anyone, I just want to have a laugh and hopefully escape.
Looking back on it, I actually regret resctricting myself so much. I could run a flashlight without being a troll with it. I could run meta perks without making the killer angry. We should all give a little thought to how our actions and choices affect other people, but it can go too far sometimes.
You definitely can't please everyone. Some people are only happy when they win. Some people are unreasonable in their demands. But it's always worth having a little thought about how your actions contribute to the community at large. If you want a happy, healthy community, you have to make an effort. But don't be unreasonable with yourself.

It doesn't help that content creators are extremely hyperbolic with their language. Often saying that any character outside of top tier is garbage. This isn't just a problem for this game. It's a problem in every game. Characters get neglected because some authority told everyone that the character is trash. So nobody bothers with them. Not to mention that tier lists mean next to nothing to the average player.

Firstly, Geographical Readout should be baseline and then change the addon to "Drone active zone area is increased by 10%" Her chase potential is horrible and after playing her for 300+ hours I can definitely say that it feels borderline required if you actually want to chase as Skull Merchant.
Secondly, when a Drone is hacked, a new drone cannot be put within 8 meters of the hacked drones physical location until the Claw Trap is removed. This would greatly help 3 genning on its own because it will force the Skull Merchant to either physically guard the gen until the claw trap expires which would allow other Survivors to work on a different gen, or take a chase, which would allow the other Survivors to work on the gen that had a Drone on it.
And lastly, Drones are no longer returned to your inventory immediately after a Claw Trap is removed, instead they now return to your inventory 15 seconds AFTER a Claw Trap is removed. If you take chase with someone with a Claw Trap and down them, this basically won't even affect you since by the time you pick them up and take them to a hook you'll nearly have the Drone back, this only helps combat her 3 genning because now if she decides to wait out a Claw Trap because the previous change, she'll have to wait even longer to get the Drone back.
This is a well thought out fix for SM. I just suggested adding a shart mechanic to her power. Your setup is better. Not as funny though.

It will probably just make them leave the game.
I get it is going to make the game more fair for newbie survivors. But please, don't pretend it is going to help newbie killers. It isn't, it will be extremely frustrating for them.
It will definitely help new killer players in the long run. When the survivor pops off the hook, the killer isn't just going to DC. They will wonder what happened and attempt to tunnel the player. The killer gets experience in chase and the survivor can pick up their controller and start playing again. The killer might even discover that chasing is more fun than kebabing a survivor on hook.
If you want to help new killer players learn the game, a more robust tutorial system would be great. That would definitely help new killer players learn the mechanics of the game. I think that most new players, survivor or killer, have it very rough at the start of the game. There's a lot to learn and very little in-game to explain it in a way that new players can comprehend. Better tutorials would ease the growing pains that new players experience. Therefore limiting the frustrations that make players more likely to just stop playing before they can reach the top of first hill the have to climb.

Yeah, beginning killers will be happy to see background running mechanics pulling survivors off the hook at random (no)
If baby killers are getting one hook and then just face camping, then there should be a mechanic to encourage them to actually engage with the game.
Bad matchmaking aside, new killers players don't have to worry about very much. New survivors can't loop, don't run overtuned perk loadouts, can't blitz gens, can't flashlight save or even stun the killer effectively, they don't BM the killer as they are too busy ****ing themselves. A new killer just has to learn the game.
Removing cheesy garbage like hook camping will actually result in new killer players getting better, faster. Most players will completely forgo skill expression in favour of taking the easiest path to victory. Which is bad for the health of the game. Especially when it means one side can put down their controller for almost three minutes during a match and it have it not change the outcome in any way.

granted facecamp is a bubba meme usually but legit I do wonder what some survivor players are thinking that removing tools and strats will end focusing or make killer players play different if they want to win..
I don't think the anti-hook camping mechanic is primarily for more seasoned players. I think it's for more casual players, who play against weak, inexperienced killer players. These kinds of killers almost never leave the hook, regardless if it's one gen or five gens. I really noticed it when my MMR dropped.
I have tried to get friends into the game, but when they come play they encounter what I described above. They play two or three matches and stop, as playing against killers like that isn't fun or scary. It's just obnoxious. This new mechanic will not help more seasoned players (killer can just proxy camp instead), but it will make the experience better for newer players, and hopefully that means more of them will stick around.

I mean if your nurse using 4 perks and add-ons and survs make it to end game then you played terribly, or just not good with nurse. Also as I've never ran noed on any killer does the exposed work for m2 or is it just strictly M1?
I played against a Nurse that hid outside of the gates on Haddenfield. They waited for everyone to do the gens, then insta downed with NOED and Mori'd the survivors instantly.
It only work on M1. She turned up next to me. I ran thinking she was slower than me and she insta downed me with NOED and Mori'd me. It was a weird match. I've only ever seen something like that once.
