Year 11 forward could be really disappointing...
Retroactively adding voice lines is a horrifying prospect. The majority of veteran players chose their characters (usually survivors) based on their current voice. In most other games, we can simply disable the BGM or Voices. However, in DbD, these are integral to balance and do not come with adjustments.
Worse yet, many longtime players of Jonah, Steve, Nancy, and Jonathan have dropped their favorite characters because they were heavily disappointed by the recast voices. If voice lines are recast across the board are we going to hear an unrecognizable version of the current DbD cast?
Now with repetitive one liners all characters are at risk of permanent destruction. The players who log in bi-monthly to claim quests and disconnect are not going to feel the impact. The players who have followed this game for years are going to lose the game that was once special to them.
More than ever, there needs to be a way to preserve the current characters in game. Please reconsider changing the iconic grunts and screams of years old characters. Do not add voice lines that serve no gameplay purpose. And for the characters who are stuck yapping into the void: I urge you to give us a Toggle to disable voice lines.

A toggle would be easy enough to add, can't see why they wouldnt
A few characters in the game already have a different voice actor for grunting and speaking respectively. This simply is what they should do from now on (along with a toggle as well, not everybody enjoys having to listen to yapping survivors). Oh and stop being lazy and start actually equalizing the sound volume of the surv roster already. Sound is an extremely important aspect of the game's gameplay.
I've been hoping for voice lines for all characters for a while.
Wild thing to complain about.
i miss when this game was "silent". Now every survivor has to give a quirky Millienial chungus one-liner everytime you switch to them or load into a lobby as then. I don't know why everything has to be so in-your-face now.
huh where are you taking this info from? No one said(yet) they are going to recast anyone. All OG voices belong to BHVR and their workers. Grunts are staying the same. They will just add dialogues.
And from personal perspective, i do not understand people who disappointed in that, isn't that boring to play same thing for years? Don't you want to see some new tweaks to your character-new cosmetics, voice, model change?
Sometimes I think about trying a new character and the lobby yapping is so draining I switch back to an older character before the trial even begins. I can't help but groan when I'm forced into a lobby of Stranger Things characters or Tae-Young talking to themselves.
It only gets worse trying to adept the monolougers like Lara or Vee... There's zero incentive to play those characters for a second trial.
Bhvr has been outsourcing voice work for the past 5 years. They also surprise recast the entire ST survivor cast when they added the new voices. Let me tell you, the drop in Nancy players was steep and happened overnight after the change.
If I want to hear a new character I will play a new character. This is not an invitation to spontaneously rework every sound that contributed to me choosing someone in the first place.
When the change is cringe repetitive one-liners that don't fit the tone of the game and no one asked for, its not something to be excited about. They've already set a precedent of fully revoicing characters with ST and it was very polarizing for the people that liked those characters as they were.
I feel like I've seen a lot more Nancy players since that happened.
In fact on Nightlight her pickrate went from 1.55% to 4.5%. It's since dropped down to 2.22%, but that's still higher than it was before they reworked her model and revoiced her.
Not that I think anything was wrong with the old Nancy voice, just that I don't think the new one caused a dip in her player base.
I mean, yes. But they have not done it so far despite every new character now having voicelines and despite people saying that they dont like those. They absolutely SHOULD do that. Let people who like voicelines enjoy them, but dont force people to hear those if they dont like voicelines. (Especially those which can be heard by other players…)
That you were hoping for it does not mean that others were hoping for it, lol. Obviously people complain, not everyone likes the same things.
And I would not even say that all people who wanted voicelines will like the final result. Because this might also mean that some voices might change, since the original VAs are not around anymore. And we saw how people complained about Steve getting a different voice and from my experience, his pickrate also dropped because of that.
Her pick rate jumping is directly tied to new players only knowing her current voice because they joined due to the chapter (which was also off the market for years.) Are there people who like her new voice? Who are indifferent to it? Absolutely they exist. But everyone I know that has been playing her since 2019 has moved on to anyone else.
At the end of the day it was an unnecessary change, her fans new and old would have played her all the same since she was marketed with the new chapter at the time.
Apparently everyone needs to be the center of attention. We should be allowed to disable voice lines.
I personally don't enjoy talking in dbd and avoid talking survivors, that's just not for me.
Hopefully mute button will be implemented.
I will cry if my survivors start dropping bad jokes.
I wonder if they'll make an requiem leon skin that makes bad jokes
David King is the one that interests me. I'm very familiar with the area he's from in the lore and know the accent/patter he'd have really well. His current VA is Stefan Hovarth (dev not professional VA iirc), who I'm unsure could reprise the role and pull off a convincing Mancunian accent.
However, if they recast David, we may lose his screams, and that'd hurt. David's screams are part of the DBD ambience to me.
Yeah, replacing the original voice actors with new ones to add repetitive voice lines will be very controversial. I do not expect any old Voice actors to reprise their roles as they tend to go for professional voice actors now which will lead to many iconic screams to get lost. Maybe some of the more recent additions without lines will be expanded with the same actors though..
And at this point, a toggle is really needed, which will probably not conserve the old recordings anyways..
It will be interesting to see who will get Voice lines and who wont though. I don’t expect Laurie or Quentin to get any for example and for survs like Jake and Claudette the silence also kinda fits their characters.. then there is some that already have Lobby Lines that could expand for matches..
If they recast they should keep the screams and cries and whatnot. That's the only middle ground. That or add settings for original or new VAs.
they do have different voice actors (spoken lines bis scream/grunts etc) the Walking Dead characters, right?
Thay are actually doing this crap?
Why though?
It makes no sense, many people do NOT like the constant talking.
Honestly, no. We have this with the TWD characters, the voicelines are done by the actual actors, the screams and grunts of pain by other VAs. And it does not really sound good and looks more like low quality than anything. A good example where voicelines downgraded characters.
But I would be happy with a Toggle of "Voicelines + new VAs" and "no Voicelines + old VAs".
Exactly. And from what I have seen (and my own opinion), this is not really well received.
So many controversial changes would get resolved with a simple toggle, and yet they don't do it.
to some extent, its understandable why they wouldnt ‘just implement a toggle’ to preserve the older implementation - as that would mean they would need to keep both versions alive and tested and adjust for any future changes.
So eg for the UI, i completely understand why its not feasible.
In case of these Voice lines, there is not really a Need for it to only feature New versions, so i would be all for it.
I meant the rarity colors in particular.
Nothing would happen if they would leave them as an option.
I'm personally very very excited for all these changes, it's a lot of things I wanted in the game. Things like voicelines a toggle would be perfectly okay. I want this game to evolve, survivors have looked so ugly for years and years, fingers cross when healing, shoulders collapse on gens, maria's torso implodes on gens.
We need new things to make this game more immersive, I really want to feel more immersed and scared, I'm here for that side of things.
As for people who want to keep old things, I've owned the game since launch and I don't want anything old back, leave that for private servers/the modding side of things.
There's no way you could possibly know this, but even if it was true… just… do that again? Pick a different favorite based on the updated voices?
If you're willing to quit a game because they changed the voice of a character you like, that's your prerogative, but you know they aren't going to accommodate you, right? They are never going to give "dialog changes" the same weight as you currently are.
I would never tell someone to stop doing something because it's weird, but you do know it's weird, right?
If its not a big deal then why change it?
I’m hoping that they don’t follow through with in-game voicelines for every original character. I’m so tired of hearing random yapping in a trial. I avoid playing Lara, Nic Cage, and etc purely because of their non-stop chatter in game. I’m a Renato main, I picked him because he has cute cosmetics, no in game voicelines, and the least annoying screams/cries (in my opinion). I guess I’ll swap to a licensed character without voicelines if this goes through. A toggle would be absolutely splendid, but seems like BVHR loves ignoring community requests like this.
