What's the point in DS having a skill check?

I want to start by saying that by no means do I think this is a problem that needs attention. It's just a random and trivial thought that came into my head awhile ago when DS was changed, and for some reason it keeps bugging me so now i'm finally just going to ask it. I dislike making another DS thread as we have gotten plenty of those recently, but I believe this to be something not yet talked about. All I want is to reflect on this aspect of the perk that I feel might be outdated, not to discuss if the perk needs a buff/nerf still. I want you guys to help me out by giving me your thoughts. Thanks.

Before DS was changed it made sense to have the skill check as it was stronger and it wasn't purely anti-tunnel. This gave the perk a risk , although a very small one, as a trade-off for that power.

The new DS is pretty much only usable against actual tunneling now. If a survivor manages to miss the skill check then obviously DS was useless. If I were to take DS into a match nowadays, its for the sole reason to ensure that i'm given a chance if I get tunneled. The fact that it could be rendered useless just seems odd to me with the new changes. Imagine if BT gave you a skill check when you were unhooked, one that if failed means you don't get the endurance status effect. Seems kinda pointless and defeats the purpose a bit does it not?

You might then ask how would DS activate. Well if it stays as is it would be a simple change. During the pick up animation you can press E to activate DS, once the animation is over you can no longer use it and the perk is saved for later (like it is currently).

I didn't mean for this to be as long as it is for such a small thing.

No i'm not making this thread because I missed my DS just in case anyone is wondering. Though I did miss it once a couple months back right at the exit gates before the rework, boy was that disappointing.

  • There's no reason for DS to be even easier to use than it is now. Before you used to be able to use it if you weren't even hooked and now this already easy to hit skill-check that makes survivors actually put effort into their perk is a problem?

  • The good thing about it having a skill check is that if you don’t attempt it then you can save DS for a later time.

The skill check should deffo be a lot bigger now though to help people who aren’t great at hitting them.

That actually doesn’t work. If you fail DS is deactivated

The skill check always appears and not doing it counts as failing no?

Unless it changed with the recent update, you don’t actually lose DS when you don’t attempt the skill check so you can save it for your next unhook

He's right, not doing the skillcheck lets you keep DS and it will appear a second time if you are tunneled again.

If its nerfed to hell so only people who are actually tunneled get value from the perk, then it make sense to just activate the perk instead of a skill check.

Just give it to survivors. Dont like it, dont tunnel. If your a killer that doesnt tunnel then what do you have to worry about?

As was said above, you may not want to use your DS the first time so you can let the skillcheck pass without doing anything. If the skillcheck were to be removed, this would remove some niche flexibility from the perk.

Not doing it (not pressing space at all) doesn't count as attempted and it will "pass" and DS will deactivate until you're unhooked the second time.

    Oh well my bad then

  • Survivors who are new to the game need Decisive Strike the most, and are the most likely to fail skill checks.

The skillcheck ought to be removed from DS

Not sure if it was added later in the OP, but they state that you would simply press E (for PC) to activate it during the pick up animation. Once the pick up animation is done, the perk is placed into effect. You don't press the action button, you don't DS, saving it for later, as it does currently.

Regarding the OP, I honestly wouldn't mind if DS was automatic at this point. It has an ungodly amount of restrictions on it now that you shouldn't really have to worry about missing it. If a killer chooses to tunnel while there is an obsession, they take the punishment.

Is it a necessary change? Nah. It would be nice for those survivors who struggle to hit smaller skill checks, though. It was definitely necessary for how crazy powerful DS used to be, but now that it is strictly for tunneling, it honestly isn't necessary anymore.

  • It's just one of those relics of an earlier design that has just stayed on the perk after reworks and/or nerfs, much like BT and the terror radius, which should be changed to proximity but I digress.

I think I've only missed the skill check once or twice but I'm in favor of its removal or making it bigger because I think the players that need it most (read: players that don't play frequently or are newer) are the ones that are more likely to miss it. And it's kind of silly that missing the skill check won't even let you use it off your next hook tbh. The perk is now situational enough that I think this change is warranted.

The problem with this line of thought is that sure new players need it the most, but making experienced players that use the perk have an even easier time using it is bad too.

Experienced survivors miss it once every 3,000 times.

Only distracted streamers miss it more often than that.

So if its so easy to hit there's no reason for it to be even easier to hit. Anyone inexperienced that wants to hit it just needs to get better at hitting it, not having it given to them free of charge.

I think that most new survivors dont have a perk from a licensed character.

  • I don't think the skill check is needed at all. It'd be best if they just made it into that extremely oversized skillcheck like they shown once ages ago or just made it activate passively when picked up.

Licensed characters are usually the first ones bought, seeing as the originals can eventually be unlocked with play-time.

  • it is kinda annoying. the skill check isnt hard or anything but the pressure of potentially losing the entire game for a simple mistake is usually what makes me miss it. i think it should just be an active ability button

  • at first it was ment to be "hard" to use.

now its just so you dont wait until you're right under the hook before you D Strike them.

i wouldnt mind it being changed into having a button to activate it, therefore being restricted to a certain time window in which you can activate it while being carried.

If it's easy to hit then there's no reason for there to be a skill check in the first place. Especially now that it's purely anti-tunnel. I imagine it'd be an immensely easy change too, unless of course the spaghetti code messes with things. The skill check serves no actual purpose now other then just punishing new players I guess? As you can imagine, punishing new players unnecessarily could hurt the game if it makes new players just drop the game out of frustration. After all, they haven't dumped a ton of time into this game like we have. If the game pisses them off then they'll just uninstall.

While I understand punishing new survivors isn't a great thing, making it even easier to punish killers for killing efficiently isn't great either. I'm of the mindset that their will always be survivors since that's the popular role. The same can't be said for killers, since its harder than survivor, pushing killers away from the game means even longer queue times for survivors.

  • The way DS is now the skill check should disappear and have a "Press active ability" button to escape during the pick up animation.
