A way to keep the status of exclusives.

To make the decision 3 years after the release of some exclusives to make them all free completely takes away the fact that people use them as status symbols or to show their love for their main character. To fix this I propose that current exclusive owners should be given legacy versions of the exclusives with the legacy effect on so that they can still be proud instead of just being assumed to be a player using the free exclusives like everyone else, I think this would be a great idea and would fix the problem of current exclusive owners feeling like this new patch will be a slap in the face to them.

Most online gaming communities have many people that hate exclusives...

The devs themselves have stated their reason is mainly to stop reselling and to be fair to console players, they have said nothing about hating exclusives like half the people in this thread keep spewing.

Well the console version runs pretty well and has alot of players so the stats say otherwise. The fact that the devs are giving skins to console also shows otherwise. Argue all you want, I'm getting those skins and I'm gonna love playing as Hound Huntress

    Show me these stats.

And they're all objectively wrong for doing so since society thrives off of exclusivity.

This is a joke, right? Some elaborate troll? No one can seriously be simultaneously this entitled and blind to the truth?

I didn't say anything about the devs' motive, only responding to one comment you made, that was completely false.

    "Use them as status symbols."

Cosmetics should not be status symbols, there's no reason something like this should exist ONLY for the sake of getting joy out of other people missing out. It's cruel, it's unnecessary, and thankfully it's going out the window. ESPECIALLY something like this that was a matter of attending an event in a specific country, that's frankly ridiculous.

"or to show their love for their main character"

Which now, many more people will be able to do in the same way.

The only people who suffer from this change are selfish people who only see value in something because they can lord it over other people not being able to have it. Good riddance.

I got a really rare parachute for 420 on gta. I don't like it because im "lording it over other people" but because i really like the game and its rare. Its the reason people collect things in real life

And i have none of this ######### i stand to do nothing but gain, but I know it means a lot less to me than it does to the people who have it currently. I think OPs idea is really good for that reason

Well stay mad I guess it won't change the fact that BHVR will still go through with the update. Lmao

  • This is going to be a very unpopular opinion, but I do understand where you're coming from. Many people don't seem to understand what it is that gave those cosmetics value for people like you. It's not about lording it over everyone, or not wanting other people to play with your toys, it's about what they represented.

People didn't pay for those cosmetics with money, but they did pay for them with time and effort. And there was an implicit promise in the fact that the cosmetics were advertised as exclusive rewards for that investment. It's not unreasonable that people feel robbed now that that exclusivity, which was why they invested the effort in obtaining those cosmetics in the first place, is being nullified without compensation.

Many people feel much the same way about the Rift. The devs never specifically promised that the Rift would take 70-80 hours for an average player to complete, just like they never specifically promised that these cosmetics would remain exclusive for all time. However, just as "our goal is that the Rift should be completable within this timeframe" carried an implicit promise that it would be, "these cosmetics are exclusive to this event" carried an implicit promise that they would not be available outside of that event. In the same way that people felt lied to when they realised that the Rift would take much longer to complete than advertised, many people now feel indignant at the reveal that the cosmetics they invested in were not exclusive as advertised.

  • I really don't get why this is a problem to you. Why do you need MORE compensation for having these skins other than the fact that you were able to wear those all along and most players and all new players couldn't. You're seriously defending the scam market just because everyone is NOW getting a free skin you had all this time for free? You're not losing anything but the exclusivity of the free skins you have in a video game, don't need to be so egocentric. After all, just like you, many players who had these skins cared about them and now they lost them and there's not an efficient way to prove who had them and who didn't. This compensation wouldn't be fair for them.

Not defending any scam market at all not sure where you got that from? also i've previously said its not about the fact I paid its the fact that they would release skins labelled as exclusive when they aren't and at this point i'm just constantly repeating myself, please read the thread before commenting something of no value, cheers.

  • Here's you saying it. And the "Exclusive" label its not really exclusive. Although I get the frustration, there's really nothing that can be done after they said they're releasing it. It is the easiest and probably the only way to guarantee that every player who had those have them back but since you're not REALLY losing anything, just getting some skins (if you didn't had them all), then it's easier to just accept and move on

Literally just not endorsing scamming though.

  • You said that it would be easier to just let it alone and eventually it would run out of codes. Problem is: less codes = more expensive and no one knows how many codes there are out there. I heard about people having MANY of them, so "letting it solve itself" it's not a solution. You saying that that's how it should be instead of the devs doing something about this (such as giving the skins that were supposed to be free as free skins to everyone) is defending it.

  • No I don't have any pixels that will make me feel special. Devs give me more pixels to make me feel special.

Then actually respect the fact people aren't going to be ripped off anymore and console players who never got the opportunity to even obtain these are now going to get them. Hell the fact that they are free very respectable considering if the dev's really wanted to they could put them on the store for auric cells and make bank considering now people already are willing enough to spend nearly 1000 dollars for the skins

There are still cosmetics out there like the bloodletting or the streamer ones that will remain exclusive so for the love of God will you get off your entitled high horse.

So maybe some other people can enjoy something good in the game.

Well you said that losing exclusivity of skins is a problem (the title of the post and your initial propose suggest that a player who had exclusive skins being mistaken with someone who got it for free is a problem (because they won't be able to be proud of themselves using anymore for some reason?)). Then you suggested for the Legacy effect to be given to these exclusive skins (ultimately invalidating your point since the legacy skins are actually exclusive and the same problem would apply to players losing their legacy effect exclusivity). Still doesn't solve the problem for players who lost their exclusive skins (since there's way to many of them and it would take a lot of time to verify one by one). You did say that you didn't want the devs to give free exclusive skins (which they're also doing to end the scam market and you are aware of it) because they would stop being exclusive, so they should just leave it alone, not solving it. So yeah... My interpretation of what you said it's pretty valid.

What do you mean by scam market?

  • People selling skins that were supposed to be free.

  • Yes it would stop it and fix the problem of people's skins being missing.

  • @AbstractPolygon said:

Making legacy exclusives would fix the problem of codes being sold if the exclusives are all given out which is what Behaviour claim their main reasoning is whilst also honouring people that owned the skins before. What all you are doing is making this about hating exclusives and wanting all exclusives banned forever. Exclusivity is a lucrative marketing tactic almost all companies use to increase the sales of their products - e.g mcdonalds coming out with limited time food ranges and supreme having limited time one time only clothing drops. Exclusivity is in all markets everywhere and just a part of them all.

Even if exclusivity is a thing doesn't mean it's a good thing. It is a disgusting marketing strategy trying to exploit consumers into buying something now because it might not ever come back.

I'm glad BHVR is taking a stance and saying no to exclusives.

I wouldn't call this a solution to either of those issues.

Yes, technically this means that people won't randomly lose exclusive items. But the reason they were losing them in the first place wasn't because of the exclusivity itself, it was because of a bug in the way exclusive items were coded. So the solution is not to just give the items to everybody, the solution is to fix the darn code. Perhaps by using the same code which they use to assign store-bought items to some players' accounts and not others.

And yes, technically this means that people will no longer be able to scam others by pretending to sell exclusive skins online. But that's not the devs' problem to fix, nor is it their responsibility. People sell counterfeit copies of the game itself online which don't actually work - should the devs just make the game free to play to stop them from doing that? There are probably fake auric cell packs being sold on dodgy websites for "discounted" prices. Should the developers make auric cells free to stop that from happening?

I'm not commenting on the ethical ramifications of giving the cosmetics away for free - I'm just saying that the stated reasons for doing so were heavily logically flawed.

I think most people are just tired of hearing about this. We both know the devs aren't gonna provide anyone anything in regards to exclusivity. It's a lost cause. I think we're all just gonna have to accept the fact that at the end of the day, BHVR doesn't want exclusives and if you're looking for that, play one of the many games that does support it.

It's clear BHVR has changed their stance in regards to exclusivity and the only solution is to accept it or not to play the game.

Well to be fair they have tried numerous times which we have seen to fix the code and it kept happening after a while. This goes back to 2017 when it was happening almost everyday when a new post showed up about the situation.

I think the other issue is fixing the code doesn't help those who lost it as the old system never knew who did and didn't have certain ones which has only happened over time since migrating saves to their own internal servers. I think it's more of a mix of the old and new system still being around which causes the issue.

While I 100% agree the code being fixed would solve the current problem or people losing them now it doesn't solve the overall issue of those who lost them in the past.

There is a difference, the game and auric cells are always available to buy meanwhile codes for exclusive skins are not sold by bhvr and we're never meant to be sold. If they gave the players who previously owned any of the skins some kind of new exclusive skin, people would still be able to sell accounts with those exclusive skins.

It's all about the barrier to entry. Even if legacy and a few others are still exclusive, it was a lot more convenient to buy a code and just redeem it on your account than it is to buy a whole new previously owned steam account just so you can have a few exclusive cosmetics to play with. The fewer exclusives the game has, the less lucrative it becomes to buy an account from one of those shady websites.

"Lucrative" is not synonymous with "attractive". It is never lucrative to buy an account from a shady website. Leaving that aside, since I understand it wasn't really your point, it is essentially still the same thing. Whether it's paying for something or having to be in the right place at the right time, it's still an access condition imposed by the developers. And people unable or unwilling to meet that access condition may still seek to obtain the item by other means.

The fact that the exclusive cosmetics are not ongoingly available from the developers in the way that the game or the auric cells are is irrelevant; the point is that the scams are ongoing in either case. What they are doing is attempting to stop the scams by tanking the value of the item. But putting a stop to those scams by making the cosmetics universally available makes no more sense than putting a stop to the sale of false copies of the game itself by making it free-to-play.

They can't release ones which are tied to a contract without permission. That is not to say they haven't tried but it's not something they can just do.

The bloodletting one had a monetary value attached since you had to buy something from the store to get which could constitute false advertising.

It's always better to try and do something to stop the scammers than nothing at all.

Every skin being released was just about someone's time whether it was going to the stand at a show, playing in an event or spending time on a website for a giveaway.

There are also a lot of people who have lost the skins due to the older system and how they were stored and can't get them back due to that.

You're correct. It would be false advertising to say something is exclusive to a certain means of getting it and then it turns out not to be.

Depends on what was on offer.

Anything freely given doesn't fall under a false advertising banner as there is no actual contract and nothing is owed due to nothing being exchanged by both parties. It's a digital gift but one which can be changed, removed or given out to others at anytime which has been the case with giveaways in the past.

Now if its tied to a payment it is entirely different as you then have made a contract with said buyer.

Money changing hands is the major factor with what you can and can't do.
