If you add a cooldown or once per trial useage, in a week you'll be back to complaining that survivors only run 4 perks.
I don't think a brief cooldown would nuke the perk, I think just something to prevent you from being back on it literally immediately would mean you're still more than capable of going and relighting it once the killer's left the area.
-
Depends how long they take to fix it, I think- if it takes much longer than a few days they should definitely extend the duration to compensate, but if they can fix it quick with a hotfix patch then I think it's probably fine just to lose two days or so.

The problem is that Boons, turn totems into an unlimited ressource for survivors. And right now they cost very little time to the survivors compard to what they get in return.
I think boons would be fine if snuffing them was a little bit more impactfull, trough a cooldown on the perk or preventing the totem from being blessed immediatly. Also activated Hexes should be able to override a Boon.
I agree with both of these assessments. A brief cooldown on the perk, maybe only up as far as thirty seconds, and snuffing boons has a little more impact without completely undoing what they're supposed to be for.
Activated Hexes should definitely override a Boon, too. That's not even that strong, since survivors will know where the perk activated.

Survivors aren't poor baby's who never played this game. They know they can be found and killed while blessing, which is why they never bless around the Killer resulting in no time wasted. Sure you can get an insta kill Killer, but that isn't a real counter to Boons. If we're still talking about time, Boons waste more of a Killer's time due to them being able to eb reblessed INDEFINITELY. If you don't want to break them, then make it a do and forget deal that only works once or twice per Trial
Again, you're missing the point. The entire goal of the totems is to be a draw, if they only work once or twice per trial, even putting aside the fact that obviously nobody would run them in that case, survivors are just going to be stuck on generators for longer.
If you think they're too strong, maybe they can be tuned down a bit, but suggesting they be broken on snuffing, or even suggesting they be limited use, is on the same level as "just delete them" when it comes to not engaging with them as a concept.

They don't waste Survivors time, it saves them time. One person creates a Boon and boom, you got a free heal for the whole team and near Invisibility aswell if you have both of them equipped
Shadow Step is badly overrated. It's not near invisibility, it's a very slight edge in chase and protection from aura reading. I'm not going to bother talking more about that one because CoH is absolutely the main draw for totems.
So! If survivors play well and use them efficiently, sure, it does end up saving them time- but that's fine, because it's a survivor perk, it should provide them an actual benefit. But if they're sloppy, uncoordinated, if they make the mistake of drawing the killer to their boon totem in chase, if they don't count on being Exposed, Broken, or going up against an instadown from other methods, if there's Thrill of the Hunt and Undying telling the killer where they are, if it's a stealth killer they didn't see... they'll be interrupted, and that is wasted time. Add on to that, even if nothing I said is in play, if the totem is continually snuffed and they're continually relighting it, that is also wasted time.
People act like Boon Totems should have no effect on the match, and if they do have an effect on the match that's "lacking counterplay". Quite wrong, in my opinion! Boon Totems should be played around. They're a factor of the match and something to use as bait, not something to just break and be done with it.

That's the biggest problem, they're like Generators and Killer already barely have time to check on all gens. Adding another objective for the Killer that can't be countered is not fair and balanced. Boons should be bake to be broken
Won't hear any arguments from me that the game should be slowed down a little, but immediately abandoning the attempt at a second objective everyone's been clamouring for for years is not the way to go.
So, condensed version because I and others have already wordwalled about this before: If Boon totems can be broken, that means that they are no longer a second objective, they no longer waste survivor's time, they no longer become a fun new mechanic that has any effect on the game whatsoever. They become a temporary annoyance that the killer has to deal with on top of their regular duties.
They should not be breakable. Survivors should want to be returning to the same spot over and over so the killer has a chance to catch them out of position and not working on a generator.
-
The counterplay to boon totems is that survivors are out of position when they attempt to use it, and so they can be chased or the area surrounding the boon totem can be made into a deadzone. Your problem is thinking that you should be able to "undo" Boons as their counterplay, when they're a lot more like generators; a place where you can expect survivors to be.
I can get into why boons shouldn't be broken if you want but honestly I feel like you've probably already seen the reasoning at this point, this debate never ends.
-
I can vouch for this- I at least for sure have the pumpkin blade cosmetic unlocked currently and I've not even bought the Rift.
-
A login reward system would be pretty nice, probably best to make it start with BP and culminate in one/two days rewards being a hefty amount of shards so you're inclined to keep logging in and playing.
Maybe make it cycle weekly?
-
Pig's always been a C tier killer, people just rate her lower because she's inconsistent.
Once her addons all work I think she's going to be in a much healthier spot- not to say she doesn't still need work, but it's definitely cemented her as a "pretty okay actually" type of killer.
-
People will tell you that it's the overheat, but that's not at all why Billy slipped down. It's more that his addons were nuked and still aren't very good even now, and his power is a lot less flexible than Oni.
The other killers in the top five have way more flexible movement even than Oni does, and Billy's lower down on the list even than him, so it makes sense he's not chilling at the top with the others. Due to a combination of his bad addons, power creep from newer killers, and the game just kinda changing around him, Billy's slipped down to the B tier when he was once the third best killer in the game.

Nah. Just typical of people on these forums. Anyway my opinion stands. I just want it to be looked into. No sense in trying to shoot down every single thing I put forward other than to aimlessly debate.
Being looked into is reasonable- only part I'm shooting down is the part that obviously wouldn't work.
I agree with you on the lacklustre animation, for what it's worth.

I'm pretty sure it does, I think I used it back when Trickster first came out. Huntress has a reload speed add-on too, so that's not an indication that it wouldn't.

Checked off the list. I was waiting for that "I only play killer" sentence. There it was finally. Got to have that "How is it that I play killer only and still disagree with you" person in each thread like this. Ugh.
Hey, I'm not using it as leverage. Just answering your assertion that it's survivor bias.
Almost like we can disagree without it being an "us vs them" factional thing, huh?

To an extent for me. Was just assuming most would agree as it is pretty blatantly obvious that the Boons should be able to be destroyed. xD I tend to forget how Survivor sided the community/devs are until stuff like this comes out of course.
Unfortunately for that assumption, it's actually blatantly obvious that they shouldn't be able to be destroyed. It's not a question of bias- it's just basic understanding of how the mechanic works and what it's trying to achieve.
For what it's worth, I play killer exclusively. No survivor bias here.

And that's a stupid way to have it work. If it's not working properly just killswitch it, what does it matter if it's abusable or not? IT's faulty, deactivate it, it's that simple.
We can argue all day and long whether the killswitch should have its functionality expanded, if I had any inclination to do that. You asked why it wasn't killswitched, I explained it. We're only arguing because you pushed back against that explanation- if you understand that's what the killswitch is for, we don't need to be having this conversation.

but manny killer players unknowingly will fall victim to it. Not everyone knows about the issue. It should be killswitched, it's why the killswitch exists. Just deactivate it, work it out then reactivate it.
No, it's not why the killswitch exists, that's what I'm trying to explain to you. The killswitch isn't just for something that's broken- it's for things players are abusing. Players cannot abuse the Video Tape because the killer gains no benefit and the survivors aren't able to ensure they're facing it.
Players will unknowingly fall victim, yes, but BHVR have announced it doesn't work and it's circulating the community so unfortunately there's just not much to do about that.

You CAN actually. People just choose not to. You are not going to change my mind. I appreciate the effort though. Apparently you are outnumbered even in just this one thread so.. Idk what to tell you. Just makes more sense to have them be destructible for killer.
Alright, fair point, you CAN say the same about Hex perks and you CAN compare them. You'd just be completely wrong and showcasing a lack of understanding of how game design and balance works, if you chose to do so.
It makes zero sense for them to be destructible if you actually understand the mechanic.
-
@lemonsway said:

It should be killswitched. It's a killer add-on that doesn't work and gives survivors an unfair advantage of not having to deal with a killers Powers. How is completly negating a killers power not an unfair advantage?
Alright, let me rephrase. It's not something you can *knowingly abuse* for an unfair advantage. The killswitch mechanic isn't to disable anything broken, it's to disable things people are abusing, or things that are actively crashing the game.
-
@mynameisBlade said:
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2579728#Comment_2579728
You could say the same about HEX perks. You are dead wrong my friend. All we can do is each hold our breath and see who comes out right/wrong. Eventually Killers will be able to destroy Totems. It is not if but when so just be ready for it.
No, you couldn't say the same about Hex perks. They're designed around being disabled, and Boon perks are designed around not being disabled.
They're not the same, you can't compare balancing decisions between the two perk types.
-
By "other players" they mean "your opposition". If a survivor perk/addon/item were broken in the same way, it wouldn't be killswitched.
The killswitch mechanic is for things that are either crashing the game, or can be used to gain an unfair advantage. The Video Tape is neither of these.
-
To be fair, a boycott was always the wrong move, so this isn't too surprising. Boycotts only work when there's an actionable resolution the company being boycott can take- BHVR weren't responsible for this and have no ability to stop it from happening, all they can do is make a statement saying that they won't do this again.
They did technically already do that, but a more firm one would be nice- just unlikely to see it due to the realities of operating with license agreements.

You wouldn't be ruining it unless you are narrow minded... The killer having no MEANINGFUL counter play is the issue. Snuffing the Totem is not MEANINGFUL counter play as it only delays the infinite reigniting of the Boon. Destroying/stomping the Totem would be MEANINGFUL counter play and does not ruin/abandon anything. Not sure ######### you are talking about..
The mechanic may be easier to play around as the killer, naturally, but it'd be abandoning the function of the boon totems. After all, they're supposed to be a safe haven continually dragging survivors away from generators- how can they be doing that if the killer can easily stomp on the two or three totems that are going to be in advantageous positions?
There's a reason killers can't break or destroy totems. It's not bad design and it's not a flaw to be fixed, it's very intentional and it's actually a good decision. If the boons need further tweaking- which they probably do- you need to look elsewhere, because being able to permanently disable the perk or any of the totems would completely ruin the point of the perk and ensure it's nothing more than a momentary annoyance.
-
I try to spread some positivity and/or more reasoned and less knee-jerk critique where I can, because it's a real problem here. People seem to prefer complaining over being reasonable.
-

Read carefully. I am not saying they will get rid of it, but I am saying that killer should be able to do more than ....snuff it out.. That is all.. Let me be as specific as possible. If enough people complain about Killers not being able to destroy/stomp the Totem... the developers will eventually make it so that Killers can destroy/stomp the Totem. I wouldn't want Boons removed. Never said I did.
I read carefully, don't worry! You said you want boons to be something killers can destroy, and I think it would be a shame to completely ruin and abandon the boon totem mechanic like that.
-
The "can't afford another DC" part of this answer is inaccurate but I do generally stick around and see what they do. I have to imagine ignoring them is the response that would annoy them the most.

This. I was hoping they would have done something simular to what you said about kicking dirt onto the boon. But all they did was reuse the Close Hatch animation :/
Hopefully they'll get a repolish later on down the line- seems like they had some trouble with coding them in general so I suppose it's reasonable they'd choose that as the corner-cutting area. Still, it's pretty disappointing.

The devs say plenty of things they don't keep their word on... Why would this be any different. If enough people complain..believe me. It will get changed.
And what a shame that would be, honestly. Completely ruining and abandoning a potentially interesting and fun mechanic just because people complained would be a very low point in their career.
-
I check in the lobby to see if they're streaming, and I'll watch the VOD afterwards out of curiosity to see how they felt about my gameplay and to see if there's anywhere I obviously ######### up from their perspective.

Needless negativity or a reality check? The ghost face point stands, that addon pass is considered a nerf by many. I'd qualify the pig's add-on pass a nerf as well, even after it works.
I'm saying that they did not explicitly spell it that they were due for buffs. This is not negativity, it is the reality of the statement they made. When you employ deductive reasoning and look at the other stuff they've done, it's fair to think it might result in net nerfs.
I was gonna answer that and then realised I was getting too in the weeds arguing with you when that's not the point of my initial comment and especially not the point of the thread, so I'll end with this: Coming into someone's idea thread and saying "cool but the devs aren't gonna do that" is needless negativity. It's not helpful, it's not constructive, and it's only arguably even halfway accurate.

Yes and no. Currently, the only focused challenge it has is "Survive as Mikaela Reid for 1 Match", but you can go through a different path and still unlock her torso.
You are just missing a fraction of her lore which I suppose is the same at the last tome where you had to play as Blight to get everything for him, but you could do the flowers instead.

There's literally no issue here in this case.

Correct.

I can tell this is going to be one of those never-ending debates where the point's explained over and over again but never sticks, huh?

What I am saying is that if you wanted her but don't have her yet, you would want to be able to get a free skin for her while working on unlocking her, if you played DBD for free where you unlocked stuff through progression that means you would need to get 9k shards to get her, which usually takes a LONG TIME to unlock, so if you wanted this skin you would need to either get 9k shards really quickly or pay for the chapter to do an event that is 2 weeks long
Sure, but I don't see how that's a huge problem. The event's in place for a little while and unless you're starting completely from zero you can probably get her.
Or like... not get her? I've missed out on timed stuff before too, it sucks but it's hardly cause to do more than have a moment of disappointment. This isn't the end of the world, man, a lot of people already have her and she's available with currency you can earn, they're using their event to promote a new character. Pretty normal game stuff.

NoEd is a good perk.
Ehhh. It's situational at best.
Actively trying to get value from it is very high risk since you're essentially throwing the game to make a comeback at the end, and trying to use it as passive insurance means you have three perks for the majority of the game. It's fine for what it does, but it doesn't even compare to survivor second-chance perks in terms of strength or usefulness.

I agree but AGAIN, DBD literally said they aren't doing other events because they are focusing fully on Halloween and Anniversary events, and AGAIN, we are getting less this event than we ever have. It is fine to ramp down events, but I guarantee it is easier to just copy paste an event like other games are doing and instead focusing on skins and challenges, while DBD (the game who said they were going to put more work into halloween events) gave us an event with the least amount of new stuff we have gotten yet. My point is they could have just copy and pasted the first halloween event, and it would be more than we have now. We are actively getting less for an event that was promised more. If the event is like this, why are we losing out on events like the summer one?
Obviously I don't have an answer for that, but I do get where you're coming from. Fair point there!

Unless it's a case of not being able to get that skin if you don't buy her now, in which case... sure, I could see being annoyed by that. It doesn't impact the event, though, because you can progress that rift in general without doing Mikaela's challenges.

I agree and you are right, they did do all those things. The point is, they have done exponentially more in the past, even while also doing the summer event. How come we are losing content and promised bigger content on the other events, and then we are getting less. The seasonal changes to the map in the past always looked fantastic, not just a couple pumpkins. Everything else is either returning or copy paste stuff from last events like items or offerings, and again, this isn't really an adequate or amazing event if the game has given way better event. Other games that just do the same thing every year at least don't disappoint because we know exactly what is coming, plus new skins and challenges. With DBD we are getting less and less. Maybe if you ignore all other games doing large events right now, ones that have already been going on for a week or two, DBD's event doesn't seem horrible and it seems adequate, but when you compare the HORROR game to other games doing way more creative events, even just repeating events, it is sad to see.
Seasonal events always should start to ramp down, though, because otherwise it gets unmanageable on top of maintaining and expanding the actual game year-round. I saw this with other games too, people act this way any time devs don't pull out all the stops for a repeated event- it's just silly.
That being said, I would personally want to see the Halloween event get the most focus, even after it's started to ramp down, since DBD is a game paying homage and tribute to horror aesthetics.

I think its different for the fact that this is an event tome, not a normal tome, meaning this tome most likely is not open forever so people are punished for not having a character
Probably fair, yeah. As the above poster said, though, they're not required to go through the tome to get the Doctor cosmetic.

I mean, tomes usually have challenges for specific characters and they're not all base game characters, so that doesn't seem too suspect to me.

Sure it would be impossible to maintain, but if they just copy and paste the same event as the first Halloween event they did where you harvest pustula to earn skins, I am sure it would be enjoyed exponential more. Even then, the devs said they stopped doing other events in return for making the halloween event and the anniversary skin way better, and we got even less this year lol other games again still repeat the event but atleast give us a lot of new skins and challenges that can be earned in a lot of cases. In the event of the collab, dbd only made a charm.
DBD had no expectation to even do the charm, DBD crossovers never go both ways and it's ludicrous to be mad this one didn't either. To the other points- sure, maybe, and I'd understand generally lamenting that they aren't doing more than they are, but this is a pretty decent Halloween event. You've got seasonal changes to the map (including new things to interact with), you've got the returning event items, they brought back the Blight Serum, and they've added a smaller rift with challenges for bloodpoints and new cosmetics. This is a perfectly adequate event, it's not lacklustre in the slightest.

we'll you'd expect a horror to at least go big or go home for halloween. When non horror games do better halloween events than an actual horror game, that's more than disappointing.
Can't argue with that one, though. I wouldn't say "more than" disappointing, but it is a *little* disappointing.
-
...Because that's a first contact crossover event with more impact than a seasonal event?
I've never understood the idea that seasonal events should always be the most creative and innovative things ever, surely that'd get impossible to maintain very very quickly.
-
How on earth is head shaking toxic? Or proxy camping, for that matter...
That darned toxic killer, playing the game with intent to actually find and chase survivors by laying bait....
-
I only played the one game, but it seems pretty fun- I rarely want events to completely change everything, a little variation on the core game I enjoy is perfect as far as I'm concerned.
