Im mostly playing with meme builds or with one or twop perk only while not trying to tunnel or camp. With Pig or Sadako.
When I win, its mostly in end game or with one gen remaining. Im fine with that. I have enough experience in dbd, but that does not mean, that Im gonna be consistent. Games are supposed to be fun (I know that this is something that many people in this game tend to forget). Me stomping my opponent isnt fun for me. A close game where both sides have a good chance to win is a lot more enjoyable for all people involved I feel like. This is certainly something you can get behind. Survivors that have no chance of winning tend to give up fast. Thats presumably why I rarely see quitters in my games. Of course this is just my opinion and everyone can play however they want.
My last comment on the matter: A lot in dbd in terms of winning does not come down to player skill or even hourcount to soome extend but the loadout that they bring to the table. I could send myself to Midwich all the time while using jigsaw sketch and crate of gears combined with lethal, corrupt, stbfl and surge to win almost all my matches. Is this fun? Not for me for sure.
Well, that's why I didn't say "this is what a win should be"
I hold myself to a high standard, but not everyone should

what. a 4k is a win regardless if it at 0 or 2 gens. the only time gens would ever matter is if its like tournament and two killer in tournament standing tie for same amount of kills, so then the killer with more gens would win as to break tie breakers.
2-4 escape through exit gate is win for survivor team
3-4k is win for killer.
I know dbd mmr counts as 2 survivors that died as losses but really it should be counting them as draws. when 3rd survivor is killed, the entire team loses. that is how it should work but it is whatever.
They asked what I consider a win.
With my experience level, if I'm trying against my opponents, I feel I should be winning at 2 gens remaining.

It wouldn't matter, she is already a pretty weak killer yet survivors still keep giving up against her for some reason, even if she become lot weaker she would still have super high killrates thanks to all those strange survivors
Weak != fun.
For example, Legion is not strong, but is certainly not a pleasant experience to play against. Same with Knight.
There are Killers who are oppressive, like Nurse, whose strength creates unfun matches. That is not the only way to be unpleasant though.

I think I've spent enough time on this discussion and will wrap it up here. I don't care much about the effectiveness of tunnelling or counterplay debate. That's a whole other topic.
At the end of the day, how you define tunnelling only affects you. You can define tunnelling as 2 hooks in a row and get salty about being tunneled every game, or you could define tunnelling as being heavily targeted by the killer, which is how most people define tunnelling. If you go by the 2nd definition, you can enjoy the game knowing that over 90% of killers don't try to tunnel you. If you go by the 1st definition, you'll get bitter, grow to hate the game, and eventually quit, like Pulsar has.
If you are gonna throw shots at me, tag me.

Tunneling is not what grants you winstreak though, it's good as long as it works, but it will fall off quickly the better survivors get thanks to sheer amount of counter perks which coincidentally also helps against camping, and also extreme gen efficiency that will finish a match within 4 minutes if killer is mediocre
No, tunneling definitely gets you wins, even against good Survivors.
It works like that because the skill needed to counter tunneling effectively is quite a bit higher than the skill needed to tunnel. That's why you see tunneling used effectively in competitive play.
It is the best strategy for every skill level, works even better when punching down skill brackets and only really falters when you would've lost anyway due to a MASSIVE gap in skill.

Tunnelling isn't extremely difficult to counter. The solution is simply being better at the game. Good survivors actually want the killer to tunnel them, so they can waste all of the killer's time and allow their team to work on gens uninterrupted. This is how Hens carries his solo queue games and escapes far more than the average solo queue player. See
Oh wow!
A comp player can win more games than the average player.
Look, I don't think you're arguing in good faith at all. I've tried to be patient and play by your rules, but you've routinely made me regret my decision. Meh. Focusing mostly on a single survivor is the general definition. If their definitions are in line with that, that's good enough for me.
There is nothing in the world where people 100% agree on, so we have to look at majority opinion. If 2 people disagree but 18 people agree, the definition from the 18 people is the general consensus.

The term "tunnelling" is exclusive to DBD, so if people mentioned tunnelling in a chat lobby in 2016, people would have had no idea what they were talking about. To learn about what tunnelling is, they had to either learn it from a content creator, which is unlikely since there were very few back then, Googling it or online discussion. If they learnt about it from Googling or online discussion, they would have seen those threads I linked.
There's also people in those same threads disputing that definition.
Such as? Were their definitions very different from "focusing mostly on a single survivor"?
No, but they did not mention anything about ignoring others or killing the Survivor. In fact, a couple specifically mentioned it being hooking a Survivor twice in a row with no one else being downed/hooked between.
And then many more were the typical comments I'd expect from that time. "Those filthy Survivors use DS, insta, BNP etc etc and expect us to play nice grrrrrr"
or something to that effect.

You have completely misread my post and part of that's on me, sorry.
I MEANT to say that fast generators are a strong reason why some Killers feel they have to tunnel. It's hardly the ONLY reason genrush exists, and I never said it WAS the only reason it exists. Again, if you are going to call me out please at least do it properly, ask for clarification first.
With that clarification, I find that to be lacking.
Most Killers tunnel simply because it's easy and effective. Getting someone out ASAP is always the winning move, and it's extremely difficult to counter.

If you're gonna call me out, at least do it correctly or don't do it at all.
"Fast Generators are the problem and genrushing is why Killers feel a need to tunnel."
You have directly blamed genrushing as the only reason tunneling exists.

Others have already said it, but tunneling has no dictionary entry, it will always be subjective (just like genrushing, if you look at the recent post about it). And as someone who has been playing since late 2017, no the definition was never unanimous, people argued about it back than aswell.
I don't think I'm far off from the original definition of tunnelling. There is an unofficial dictionary entry for it on Urban Dictionary from 2019. The way they defined it resembles tunnel vision and focusing only 1 survivor. It's also the most upvoted definition with only 4 downvotes, so the vast majority of people agreed with it.

I find it curious that you like to tunnel but try to convince people that tunneling isn't a problem. Scared your winning strategy could be nerfed?
I just like calling people out when they are wrong. It doesn't matter what side they are on. I've made threads in the past calling out killer mains for crying about survivors, e.g.

a sample of seven games turned up six false positives where your definition of tunneling was met, but the actual spirit and predominant complaint of tunneling was not.
I assume you are referring to the Legion game for the one he was tunnelled? That Legion was actually trying to avoid tunnelling. Look at timestamp 00:30:44.
Cheryl literally unhooked you right in front of the killer. He could have tunnelled you right there out of the game, but he completely ignored you. It seems he was actually trying to avoid tunnelling you.
Once again, as a relatively old player, tunneling never had an agreed upon definition. As we've seen, it's highly subjective.
One Urban Dictionary post does not a definition make.

This. This is it. This is why crying "tunnelling!" is absolutely friggin' meaningless.
Tunneling derives from "tunnel vision", as in the Killer only has eyes for you and JUST you to their own detriment. If the Killer is not:
- Directly focusing only on you,
- From the beginning of the round,
- To the point all you can do is get unhooked and be chased and downed, no gens or anything else,
- Until you are dead, AND
- YOU did nothing to grab the Killer's direct attention or aren't near death already?
Then it quite simply isn't tunnelling. If it doesn't fall under those five criteria, all five, then "focusing" is the term for what is happening to you. You're being focused, committed to, or you did something to prove to the Killer you're a threat to be removed ASAP. Tunneling is toxic. Focusing on a Survivor isn't, it's tactics.
I'd argue that chasing someone directly off the hook because you can't find the unhooker, or the unhooker got out of the way or didn't take a hit, is usually accidental tunnelling or soft tunnelling at best, and a mistake you're capitalizing on at absolute worst. Both are understandable reasons to "tunnel" like this.
Weren't you just saying how toxic and OP gen rushing is and why it's the root of all tunneling in a different thread?
To turn it back on you, "It's just tactics."

Let's be serious.
If the survivor forces the killer's hand, the "focusing on one survivor against one's own benefit" factor is clearly missing.
"Tunnel vision": it's a pretty simple concept really.
Next time you'll say going against the last and only survivor twice in a row is tunneling 🤣
Anyway …
How would you even hook the last Survivor twice, doesn't make sense.
Just because you're ashamed of tunneling doesn't mean my definition isn't valid.
Not my job to convince you though.

Killer hooks 1-1-3-1. 3 goes down bodyblocking for 1. Tunneling via your definition? No. Tunneling tho? Yup. There are issues with your definition.
There is no inconsistency at all. I said that tunnelling is the killer committing hard to killing a single person. They don't actually have to down the person to be tunnelling. For example, if the killer spends all game chasing 1 survivor and that survivor escapes, it's tunnelling. Your example also counts as tunnelling.
Realizing you either can't find the Survivor or chase them efficiently while not throwing doesn't mean you didn't tunnel earlier.
now, you're making it about intent, which is ABSURDLY difficult to decipher from an often across-the-map perspective.
Failing a tunnel-out due to circumstances or realizing you're getting cooked doesn't mean it doesn't count.

I wouldn't say it's the only correct definition, but it definitely isn't a tunnel unless the killer commits hard to killing a single person. It should seem like the killer is very determined to kill one person, e.g. trying to find and kill them ASAP and ignoring other survivors. I'm going to disclose now that I tunnel frequently, so I know exactly what a tunneler thinks like. This is what tunnelling looks like. You can see that the first 2 survivors were hard tunnelled out of the game very quickly. Note that I uploaded this video long before I made this thread, so this is just normal gameplay for me.
https://youtu.be/5yReLf0tYog?si=faTtwwUCC2x1m5Pu
Just play the remaining 8 matches. I don't have time to watch another 15 matches.
At this point, I don't really care, watch them or don't.

Yep. I'm now convinced that people think they get tunnelled every match due to thinking 2 hooks in a row = tunnelling. If that definition is followed, people are "tunnelled" every match, which was why it occurred 6/7 times in Pulsar's matches, but in reality the killer wasn't tunnelling at all.
The problem here is that you are assuming that your defintion is the end all be all correct one.
I'm restarting the experiment with the new knowledge presented, and once again will be taking all of the "skill issue, stop being bad" comments. I'm also going to play at my normal time, instead of like noon. This is mostly pragmatic, as I literally can't play at noon today.

I've finished reviewing your matches. According to the definition you specified (technical tunnel), you were tunnelled in 6/7 matches. However, after reviewing your matches, tunnelling occurred in 0 of your matches (actual tunnel). I've discussed the reasons for each match in this spreadsheet. Feel free to refute them if you disagree. I believe this shows that the technical definition of tunnelling (2 hooks in a row on the same person) is an oversimplification and grossly overestimates the amount of tunnelling. Often times, the killer is just chasing the closest person or first person they find. You can usually tell if the killer is actually tunnelling based on whether they quickly finish off a survivor (3 hooks). In many of your matches, the killer hooked the same survivor twice near the start of the match and never chased that person again. If they were really tunnelling, they would have actively seeked that person out to finish them off.
If I knew we were going to change the definition of tunneling and argue over details, I wouldn't have bothered. However, since we're here. Your definition seems to be that you can only tunnel if someone dies.
I specifically wanted to keep the definition simple. The truth is that tunneling can be instigated, it can be deserved. It doesn't make it not tunneling, but it does make it understandable. However, I can't be present and account for all of that, which is why you'll recall that I asked whether or not I was to be in a SWF or Solo Q. The only way I could account for it is by having all four members of my SWF stream.
As for the games:
Yun-Jin could have easily been hiding. The Killer did not chase her at all, nor did he chase anyone near her location, for the rest of the game. This counts as a tunnel.
Legion did tunnel, but it was a tunnel of my own making. Still a tunnel as he didn't hook anyone else between me and I stayed out of his way and made myself an uninteresting target for the rest of the game.
Unknown Match: I HATE DWIGHT SO MUCH. We could've won that and he threw so hard for no reason.
I give the Huntress the benefit of the doubt, unlike PH or Legion. She was clearly trying not to tunnel.
I really don't know what to make of David cuz Legion was literally right next to him the entire time.
First two hooks were on me. Once again, tunneling as no one was hooked between us. I actually thought my team was fine, but I was clearly not supposed to be there.

I feel like, if we're trying to ferret out the prevalence of problematic strats, it's useful to examine at least two things:
-Was the killer pursuing other survivors before or after those two consecutive hooks? Numbering our survivors as 1, 2, 3, and 4: I think everyone who is not in denial would agree that a game where the killer hooked 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 4 is tunneling, but there'd be a lot less consensus in a game where the killer hooked 1, 4, 2, 3, 3, 2, 3, or even 1, 1, 4, 2, 1 (unless 4 and 2 went down trying to protect 1.)
-How many gens were left when the tunnel happened? A killer tunneling a player out from the start of the game has a very different connotation than a killer tunneling out a player at 1 gen left. They're both tunneling, but the first killer's plan was forcing the 3v1 by preventing a survivor from playing the game; the second one is pulling out the stops because they're losing, but was playing differently before, and the survivor who gets tunneled did have a chance to participate in the match and earn points.
Both of these things can be tracked without comms or aura perks.
Two things
One, unfortunately I've already started my games and I can't really amend my definition as that was one of the stipulations.
Two, that wasn't really the point of the experiments. It's just to see how often tunneling occurs. Plus, I'm sure I'll already be greeted by "you suck as Survivor; you wouldn't see tunneling if you just got good" so I'm trying to limit that a bit.

Just a reminder.
Tunneling implies tunnel vision, as in "working to kill a survivor out of the game against the killer's own interest". (e.g. ignoring a closer survivor and wasting time to find the "obsession")
If a survivor body-blocks I make a point showing him the errors of his way. Usually once is enough.
That's not tunneling, not even a little.
It is still tunneling.
Deserved? Sure.
Same thing as camping in this scenario.
You hook someone and see two people near the hook. Obviously, you aren't gonna leave and let them have a free unhook. Are you camping? Yes. Is it a bad thing in this scenario? No.

You really just think everything is tunneling? I personally only take the hardcore off hook tunneling with purpose of tunneling people out of the game as fast as possible as actual tunneling.
To make it as simple as possible, a Killer going after the same Survivor and hooking them twice in a row is tunneling at it's most simple.
Adding conditions make it murkier and much harder to judge without running a SWF all streaming.
-
@Hannacia said:

Sure but people are fast to yell Tunneler nowdays no matter what. Tunneling on purpose at 5 gens when someone gets out of hook is tunneling and can be annoying sure, but tunneling when survivor gets off hook and tries to bodyblock you from going after the other survivor deserves another hook.
If you don't run away after getting unhooked and killer comes back to the hook then thats on the survivor.
Also i've had multiple games where ive literally not found anyone else and the unhooked person eather was on a gen or ran past me..yeah you bet im hooking that survivor again instead of running around aimlessly,
If killer has 2 hooks and 2 gens are remaining i would say its fair to start putting pressure back to survivors at that point no?
So yeah…nowdays survivors yell tunneler no matter what even if they werent actually "tunneled"
I play mostly survivor these days and i get hardcore tunneled out of the game maybe few times per week. Theres games where distortion Andys are causing the killer to pressure us since the killer can't find them more than actual purposeful tunneling
Whether or not tunneling is fair in X situation isn't what's being debated and imo, is entirely separate.

- Number of times you were tunnelled
- Whether there was a disconnect and who disconnected
- The killer
- Ideally upload the end-game screens to Imgur
Mention the timestamps for the games with tunnelling, so I can quickly find them and don't have to watch every game.
This is just the first 15 matches you play randomly. Don't try to isolate it to just certain matches. Play as you normally do. Don't try to play more toxic or bold to encourage tunnelling.
Also, state your definition of tunnelling here now, so you can't change it later to suit your narrative.
Tunneling is when the Killer hooks a Survivor twice in a row.

I mean, yeah, it is but it's not really your fault.

I'll be streaming them on Twitch, might try to knock them all out today, unsure as of yet

When I say one of the best, I mean in the top 0.5% of killers.
You don't need to send me hundreds of matches. A preliminary sample of 10-15 matches is good enough for a rough estimate. Hundreds of matches are only needed to confirm with high accuracy and reduce variance.
15 might still take me 3 years 😅
Regular gamemode, I presume? Wouldn't make much sense to test on an event, imo.
What information do you want me to take down? 15 is a relatively small sample size, so it won't be too difficult to take down a lot of info. Likewise, SWF or Solo Q?

Yes, cosmetic updates are appreciated.
Also yes, I got flashbanged by the Forums randomly deciding to go to light mode.

I don't think Scott is high MMR. I have no supporting facts other than I have never seen him try and he actively brings meme builds.
He's been playing this game for about 7 years and is one of the best killer players. He's definitely high mmr for survivor. Also due to the mmr soft cap existing, it's unnecessary to be max mmr to face the best killers. Just being above the soft cap is good enough.
If we were to truly look at the best survivor players, their tunnel rate would be close to 0 because they would be playing in a 4-man swf and escaping almost every match.
Upload your games and send it Scott. With the data so far, I find it impossible for tunnelling to occur >50% of the time over the long-term.
With all due respect to Scott, he's a nice dude, he isn't one of the best Killers. Not even close.
I wouldn't be sending it to Scott, it'd be coming right to you. It might take me three years, because my patience and will to play DBD is at an all-time low, but it'll get done.
What would be a sufficient amount of games?

Might try reading the whole thing.
- There were 4776 survivors (1194*4) in total. Therefore, the odds of a specific person being tunnelled was 51/4776 (1.1%)
" The average tunnel frequency was 27%"
You quoted the wrong "study". Scott didn't conduct that one.

No, it doesn't. This 27% value is based on subjective evaluations and people guessing their own experiences. It may support how often people feel they get tunnelled but not how often they actually get tunnelled. I have already provided 2 data sets that show that tunnelling occurs far less frequently than reported (~5%). @nazzanako also mentioned their data set of 421, which showed tunnelling occurred in 1/12 (8.3%) of matches. So far, the data overwhelming shows that people drastically overestimate how often they get tunnelled.

This multiply by 4 math is only applicable when people actually track their stats, which provides accurate data. The survey was based on people's feelings, which is why it doesn't add up. If anything, the incorrect math shows that people inaccurately reported how often they were tunnelled.

On average, you get responses from people that are average mmr, so the results are applicable for average mmr. For high mmr, you can check how often top survivor players get tunnelled, e.g. Hens and Otz, from their VODs. I don't think there would be much difference since Scott Jund is very high mmr and his experiment showed that high mmr players were rarely tunnelled.
I don't think Scott is high MMR. I have no supporting facts other than I have never seen him try and he actively brings meme builds.
Likewise, I really don't want to play Survivor anymore, or really DBD in general, but I will if you'll actually accept what I find. Somehow, I imagine that if the results don't fit your narrative, they'll be conveniently ignored.
