Dude this happens all the time. High ranks get thrown into random matches. Maybe you should take the opportunity and watch their play. You might learn something.
I am keenly aware. The problem is that it shouldn't be happening all the time.

At least they brought a cake and BPS
I was super glad when I saw those, then I got destroyed :/

How about four Quentins?

Just fondle those knife wounds away

Have you seen how THICC Bubba is? #########'s crazy.

Dorito and Doctor seem to be the least liked ones that I play. And Wraith, though people usually just say he sucks as apposed to hating him outright.

Plague, Blight and Wraith are pretty rare to see. I do dread spending the match being puked on when I do see Plague though

I haven't done it myself, but I've wanted to with other games, and it's purely for completion's sake with trophies that are more or less literally impossible to get.
For example, the multiplayer trophies in Far Cry 4. I played that game a few years after it came out and nobody was playing its generic, tacked on multiplayer. No way to get the "play one of each game mode" trophy because nobody was playing. That drove me crazy, knowing I could get all trophies... except that one. That one impossible trophy stopping me from reaching 100%. That's why I'd hack trophies anyway, though I imagine with reasonably obtainable trophies people just want the 100% without the effort.

Question is: What keeps YOU alive when the killer finds you instead of the others?
If you really want to run a build that's about altruism and keeping your team alive I would run Bond or Empathy (maybe instead of We gonna farm forever).
This allows you to avoid the killer as you can tell whether someone is getting chased or not (avoiding the killer should be a priority since you don't have an exhaustion perk and no Decisive) and where all the injured teammates are so you get to use your "Botany and We'll Make It" combo on every injured person instead of just the one you unhooked.
Just my 2 cents.
That's a good idea; I have both Empathy and Bond, so I'll run them a few times and see how I go.

Being good at DBD is being good at being chased, so if you want to improve it's going to suck for a while. I'd drop all the perks that help other survivors for now. It's admirable you want to be a good teammate (I wish there were more people like you) but if you want to get better at being chased, you have to play for you for a while. Kate has a good perk - Windows of Opportunity - that will help you learn layouts and loops. I used that perk when I first started playing and I still use it when a new map is introduced. Try to always be planning where you're going to go, especially at the start of the game before you know who the killer is. I try to have a couple moves planned ahead of time, whether it's an LT wall or just a safer pallet to loop.
DS is also must for me. So many teammates will farm you off hooks and killers are happy to tunnel someone out of the game. Dead Hard fails often but it can make chases last longer.
You could also try watching some survivor streams or Youtube videos. I learned a lot from watching survivors and killers when I first started playing.
I'll try what you suggested, focus on self preservation for a while before I branch out to other perks and playstyles. Thinking about it, I guess practising looping and escaping could be helping the team in an indirect way since I'll be distracting the killer the whole time.
