  • Not sure but Blight used to fall into my Gluttony filter. Yeah considering his backstories maybe Pride be more like it.

  • The Twins obviously had been designed with the mother-and-child concept. The devs just deny that & make their backstory that way to avoid the ethic controversy blah.

  • @Yarheeguy said:

I guess so, I mean, Benedict Baker came from the 19th century too

Wasn't Benedict from 1956 or so

Anyways, he's been introduced so long ago he almost seemed like a scrapped and forgotten character now

  • Well I had been following the events since 2018. I had a few ideas when he first came out as a killer and made this post:

    @BSNightflow said:

If you haven't read the new killer's story, here it is:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/183776/descend-beyond-character-lore

    About the Opium War I

I found the Blight's (aka the Alchemist's) story heavily linked to the Opium War. More accurately, on a remote island of India, he experimented on the captured soldiers (and maybe citizens) of the Opium War I, who undoubtly were Chinese during the 1840s. As a college student from Beijing, China, I was shocked due to these reasons:

    1) Talbot Grimes is a war criminal to some sort. True, Nazi doctors and sort can be a popular antagonist stereotype in horror games, yet a DBD killer is not an antagonist, but a character I'm about to purchase, use, and at least feel some empathy for;

    2) His story is not that necessary to explain his powers and perks, nor does it correspond very well with the Hallowed Blight lore of 2018 and 2019;

    3) Unlike the story of Doctor or Trapper that are obviously fictional, the Opium Wars are actual hystorical events and has a very specified death/injured name list of both sides. It's the kind of topic you may want to be careful with when you write for a online video game which has a rather large fan base;

    4) The Wraith's story also mentioned the wars of Africa. However in that story, Philip was a young victim of war, not a perpetrator.

And that's why I've been having mixed feelings toward the Blight's release.

    About the Rawalpindi Experiments

Since I never heard of any English army conducting human experiments during the Opium Wars, I decided to read more documents.

During further research, I learned about another set of inhumane experiments that likely took place during WWII, the Rawalpindi Experiments, in which English institutes exposed unwilling Indian soldiers to mustard gas to learn the effects of this infamous weapon. I think this may be one of the "real" inspirations of the Blight's story. And the altering of time, from WWII to the Opium Wars, is probably due to the developer's fear of touching "more sensitive" political matter. Nonetheless, I'm still a bit offended.

    What do you think?

Still, I agree all his logs are mainly his life of trauma and illusions experienced over and over again.

Pretty much a character living up to one design concept.

  • Maybe Hag is Wraith's best friend. Wraith will only reveal his traumatized past to his most intimate friend. That's why you have to play as Lisa to get it. L-O-L.

  • I think this somehow depends on the Japanese commuity's enthusiasm

[... Insert other vigo safe place comments]

I want to raise the possibility that the entity simply allowed Vigo to do his thing and pretended to turn a blind eye, whether out of curiosity, entertainment, or perhaps the entity finds vigo's research interesting.

Yes, that's possible, since we see more and more Vigo branded items coming in game (maps, keys, blueprints etc). Lore wise these should be the stolen and tweaked copy of the original piece created by Vigo. Whether he liked it or not Vigo had become the Fog's game mechanic designer, haha.

Still, I doubt if the Entity consciously allowed all Vigo's dangerous little moves to happen. Yes, the Killers may somehow communicate with the Entity and even bargain for their own benefit (eg. Clown's Bamboozle), even a few survivors may do it (eg. Cheryl's block gen perk) but that's a thing only when Killers and Survivors want such power to better engage in trials. Vigo however constantly bent the rules and tried to stay as away from the trials as possible (his Shroud).

I believe Vigo learned the manipulation of the Fog under the purpose of escaping, if not overthrowing, the Entity and probably even ending all the trials. Much of his story is still unknown, but from the lore pieces we got, he was utterly against the Entity's nightmares, desperately seeking a way out. That's why even the Observer is interested in him (mentioned in one of the Arcus) and why Vigo is one of the few hopes we have for people in the Fog, unless one day we see him also corrupted by his power, like Talbot. Until then, Vigo would be a major threat to the Entity, the No.1 of the Entity's wanting list if it had one.

Talbot, however, we really don't know if the Entity knew about all his experiments all along, or not. This possibility may be left for fan artists and writers to explore.

The devs confirmed Benedict wrote the journals in one of their streams, which is why it's on the wiki. I guess you must've missed that.

I've watched the dev stream before the Hallowed Blight event in 2018 and I believe they didn't say that.

It's okay though, Dave recently confirmed on Twitter that the protagonist of Hallowed Blight is the Blight (Talbot).

thats not what i PERSONALLY said, that is what the LORE itself actually states, they are the devs words not mine. I know they are not the same person which is why i said that talbot could have been a failed apprentice, gone wrong and began his own testing of the putrid serum. You COULD read the backstories but i read the official lore of the site instead as well as the backstories. Anyway what is said was a theory and it does state that they were once the same person, which is why i believe he is vigos aprentice possibly before dwight.

"the official lore of the site"... if you are referring to the "official" dbd wiki, NAH.

That site is not at all official and what it claims to be legit information can be awfully outdated or out of pure speculation. Even today the wiki page saying Benedict was the author of the Hallowed Blight journals is still there, not corrected.

The only legit source is the game itself.

You may check for perks and character bios on the wiki, but beyond those, nah.

  • Welcome to the Fog Talbot.

btw 2020 in the Chinese lunar calendar is the year of the Rats. A total of 180 years have passed since 1840, when the first Opium War began. 1840 was also the year of the Rats. Makes me wonder if all of this is coincidence or the devs planned much of this ahead. Amazing.

  • I found this old post. Nice to see that devs continued with the Blight's concept, although I'm a bit confused by the way they design the new killer's mechanics. Looking forward to September 7th.

  • @DocOctober said:

The devs confirmed in the Hallowed Blight stream that it was Benedict, that should be the end of such discussions.

Also, the person who wrote Benedict's original journal and the person that writes the Lore nowadays is not the same anymore, so obviously the writing style differs.

DBD Chapter 17 in your face, man.

    LOL

  • Something about the Multiverse working here. Not really, lore-wise there's never doppelgangers or triplets in the Fog unless they were born twins and triplets, blah blah.

Allowing same characters in one lobby is all because it's just a game and people should all be able to play with their favorite character any time. That's why the archive challenges asking you to play with a specific character suck.

Yeah, I was also surprised at the things that Talbot did, given that he did start as a survivor, but I think the difference from other killers is that, he regretted and was haunted by what he did, but still wanted to do good despite his obsession, so he wasn’t completely broken and still had his humanity even when he was taken by the Entity:

He knew he couldn’t defend himself against the anger and accusations of his abductorーall he could do was curl up as the blows from the steel pipe rained down. His body was thrown into the grave and left for dead. Shifting between consciousness and the darkest black, he crawled for an escape, fingers sinking into rotting flesh. Black flies festered on his uncovered skin, the sensation of a hundred pin pricks stabbing into him. As he collapsed, he came face to face with a dead woman’s dazzling hazel eyes. Too weak to pull away, he could do nothing but witness his life’s work.

Poring over the school’s archives of lost texts, he uncovered scientific formulas that confirmed previously unthinkable ideas. He dreamt of ushering humankind into a new period of enlightenment. Perhaps then, the nightmares of hundreds of dead factory workersーand of those two hazel eyesーwould fade from his mind.

By the time he was attacked and thrown into the pit, I believe he had rarely had any actual face-to-face contact with the workers and was thus unaware of the casualties. However during his time in the mystery school studying the Soul Chemical, which is likely melatonin extracted from human brains, his research could have easily gone way beyond just papers and books...?

Now I'm re-reading the Hunger from the Archives. It's actually pretty fun. Some expressions that used to make no sense somehow become accurate. And puns. For example:

He moves through the death and decay of the Void, and every part of him hurts...

(could refer to both the Entity's Void and the pit he was thrown into after being beaten up)

All these survivors marooned from other worlds... where? Not here...

("Survivors" refer to both people in the Fog, and the captured foreign soldiers he might have experimented on, who were, well, survivors of the War.)

  • @Khorzad said:

I understand if you feel unconformable about the devs using a real life conflict and crimes in a backstory, but technically, they have already done similar stuff with the Huntress in World War 1 and the Doctor all but confirming to have been part of the MKUltra experiment and his character heavily based on a real life doctor from China.

-I mean, not really. Killers are the villains of the game, their stories can show them as sympathetic, but it is not necessary for you to feel empathy about them. For example, you are not mean to empathize with the Doctor, a much worse human being than Talbot.

-His Backstory is focused on explaining the aspects of his character that would eventually doom him to the Realm and make him a Killer, how he obsesses easily in his search for knowledge and stars learning to ignore his conscience and the consequences of those actions in pursuit of that goal. We already knew a lot of details about his time in the Realm, but we didn’t know who he was before all of that.

For me, is not an issue because not only the conflict is very old, more importantly, Talbolt is still a fictional character whose crimes weren’t an event that happened in our reality, even if they happen in a real life conflict and had an inspiration from real ones, is similar to the awful stuff that Herman did.

Thank you for your kind reply! I've been rethinking a lot today. It's actually way more amazing than offensive, that the devs opt to write about invasion and chemical weapons, and the utter suffering brought to people. Many people or companies won't have the nerves to do this.

Well, to be honest I will probably not empathize with most killers. I mentioned that because the Alchemist was a survivor. At least that's what I knew back then in 2018 during the Hallowed Blight, where we get to know his experience through first person POV. Aside from the opium den thing, he seemed nothing more than a typical survivor who tried just a bit too hard to stay alive. He was becoming obsessed and I assumed that he would become a killer. (I even did some fan arts about him being a killer, if that matters.) Now that he finally is one, I expected his story to be more survivor-ish with some sort of sudden twist. And the actual result is quite a surprise, lol.

Still, the Blight is pretty cool and hopefully devs will continue to polish him. Thank you again for the attention!

  • One more thing, mustard gas burns severely damage skin and may cause bright yellow blisters to form. Visually resemble what the blight pustules look like in game.

  • The Entity has its whispers and can meddle with people's minds, corrupting their sanity, like it did with Rin's dad. Maybe Kate was as sensitive as talented and noticed this, or the Entity was deliberately getting to her. Kate is very mentally powerful according to her bio and Benedict's description. Make me wonder if there exists one universe where Kate, lured by this dark melody, now kills for the Entity.

Wiki... It's made by fans. And I don't really remember official confirmation. What do you think, someone among devs can confirm it now, if we mention them here?

Personally I agree with your opinion that Alchemist is not Benedict, but a new character brought into dbd lore in 2018. He doesn't get enough love partially due to the devs deliberately making the lore ambiguous and confusing. I really hope someday devs confirm or deny this??

  • like Mikeadatrix said, before Yui and Yamaoka were put in game, if the devs wanted to release their Asian aesthetic to attract more buyers, they got a pretty limited character pool to choose from.

Feng Min is obviously a Chinese name, if I get it right, Japanese names never possess Velar Nasal sound such as "-eng" "-ang" or "-ong".

  • He was bitten by a dog in the leg and needed support for walking afterwards... and that's why he got the Dead "Dog" map. (?) 🙄

  • As a Chinese I believe her natural hair is black. You can see her newly grown hair roots of a darker color. Hair dye is an important part of the younger generation's fashion and I think it's used to represent Yui's rebellious, independent personality

It has nothing to do with getting good. I'm actually one of the few players that seems to adapt to the game. One of the biggest issues with the game is BHVR hasn't figured out how to get survivors to buck up and learn how to adapt and play against different killers, so they just keep tweaking killers until they're all countered the exact same way. But, since you don't know who you will be facing, I get it - perks are important and the wrong perk on the wrong killer and its just wasted.

This game has too much randomness for it to be balanced, and thats the problem. I don't care if I lose if I feel like I was literally out played or made mistakes. But killer success is determined so much by what addons you are able to equip, and what map you get. (ESPECIALLY MAP).

I've pretty much had it with the game. I just uninstalled it again, but I was DCing pretty quickly at toxic behavior because queue times are so stupid long for survivors. Tea bag me on the otherside of the pallet? I DC. Then they message me about how lame it was, and I just respond, "What? Oh sorry, I'm already in another game. Enjoy your queue time!"

Um... such sincere response to a funny meme, I guess?

  • @Rattman said:

Why everyone so sure that Benedict and alchemist are the same guy?

As I pointed out some time ago, I don't think that hallowed blight protagonist (aka alchemist) is Benedict Baker. Firstly, Benedict was refered as researcher. He is analytical guy, who study things first, then act later. At the same time, Alchemist wasn't smart enough to realise, that he was able to beat killer only cuz of serum. He became stronger and decided to inject killers with same serum... Why exactly? Cuz he was obsessed with serum and couldn't add two plus two. I mean, Benedict would probably thought twice, before doing this. Archetypes don't match.

Not "everyone" is sure about that. I think the Alchemist, the Observer, Ben Baker and Vigo are all different individuals, but more from a aesthetic perspective. It's just that the devs are currently indulging in their ambiguous way of writing, leaving no real evidence that firmly proves so or the opposite. And some people care too little for the unseen characters' lore to distinguish this.

  • I thought that, instead of hinting a future playable killer/survivor, the Revelation logs are rather building up the Observer's character by revealing his remorse toward his own curiosity and foolishness. He and his family studied the Entity and firmly believed its kind could be destroyed, but in the end he's trapped in this nowhere dimension with perhaps no hope of getting out. As you can see the last log is a relatively late one.

The Observer may have sympathized with the female detective or the men lured by the pig lady - starting off with good will, but too eager and naive and ending up as a pathetic prey. Just my opinion tho...

Yup, that's a great thing about the Demogorgons inclusion, it opens the door to a whole new world of possibilitys. Also, super sorry about the(somehow) triple post. Have zero idea how that happened.

Only thing bothering me is that Demi is a licensed killer and most licensed DLCs cannot be viewed as too dbd canon...

Also no need to feel sorry at all. I assume that's because I was editting the post at the same time and caused a bug to occur.

  • @Cornpopers_Evan said:

To what the eye charms are, honestly, zero idea. However, to your theory about the observer, I think it's a nice theory but I personally believe he is human. A human that learned so much about the Entity and how to manipulate it that the Entity banned him and trapped him to his own personal little pocket dimension.

I can totally agree since non-humans (like the Alien) or their bizarre maps were said by the Devs to not be able to exist alongside humans in the Entity's realm, as the understanding of the surrounding and of others is necessary for the Trials to work. Yet with Demogorgon's recent appearance I'm pretty open to more possibilities lol

  • maybe the whereabouts of Ben Baker... I really liked that guy.

  • BBQ & Chili?

  • I believe the Obsession in dbd exists for similar reason, to vaguely resemble the "cursed survivor" or "final girl" plot in the horror genre. The killer may treat them a bit differently, forcing them to the brink of death then letting them go, playing with them (PWYF). But killers are tortured killing machines and I don't expect too much mercy in the end.

  • He's dat no-name guy from Hallowed Blight, I think

Also when did devs mentioned that about Vigo? Yeah they said some hopeless survivors may be tossed into the void and that's all I remember

  • @ScottJund said:

Do you really think you should be rewarded for doing nothing while your team does all the work and dies?

The current rating system cannot precisely measure everyone's contribution to the team and that's all. Hiding or playing immerse isn't being coward you know. Sometimes one get really good at sneaking around the killer distracting them, which wastes the killer's time and buying gen time for teammates.

I would count the wiki to be a 100% reliable source. Vigo beeing the Alchemist is an interpretation. But not a fact.

Back in 2018, when we got the Lore entries by an unknown person telling their story experimenting with the serum. In the end they fail and were taken by the entity. That fits well to the Alchemist, who starts trapped at the void. The place, where beeings useless for the entity end up.

The person mentions in their entries, that they found a Journal written by Vigo with a lot of informations about the serum and the entity themself. So the Alchemist is clearly not Vigo. Vigo seems to have experimented with the serum as well, but seems much more advanced or knowledged about the entity's realm in general compared to the Alchemist who is obsessed with the serum and doesn't have much oversight about things besides it. Looking at the entries, the first thing they found, when they came into the realm of the entity wa Vigo's old laboratory. Which also means it isn't Benedict Baker either, because he was taken when investigating the ruins of the McMillain Estate.

So I think the Alchemist is a "new" character and not an established name.

Sure. I got soooo tired of the people editting the Wikis thinking they're doing something important yet failing to notice even the simplest facts or treating their own speculations as canon. Hard to tell how much lengths they will go to to maintain the "Benedict was the Hallowed Blight researcher, Vigo is the Alchemist" stuff. And the population they are misleading... urgh.

  • @Micheal_Myers said:

Vigo is sane, while The Alchemist turned insane.

Both are researchers with the same goal.

    Unknown if both reached it.

So it could be easily confused

Sure. Till now Vigo is like the most possible one survivor that escaped. Cutting off that hope sounds like a dumb move.

  • I guess it's up to the devs to whether push this concept further.

Still I don't get why many people seem to confuse him with Vigo. To me they're both researchers but definitely not the same person

  • The name theory doesn't make much sense as it's one of the most common boy names and intended to be companied with good will (the word root bene- )

    however... food. yes. Eggs Benedict.

Also Vigo's Jar of Marinated Mushrooms

    download_20191106103908.jpg

  • He might have turned into a killer but I highly doubt if he would be made the next playable one.

  • What about Kate? She saw the Entity presence and literally tried fighting back.

im aware of that and have seen it but still doesn't confirm everything on your side.

I used to believe the Hood was Vigo too. Because he wasn't showing much agony or sign of mental breakdown etc. However consider this:

    a) "The Alchemist" is used in official content to solely describe the Hallowed Blight protagnist, right? (while for Vigo they rather used "inventor and researcher")

    b) Each of the unlockable films uses the main character's name as the file name.

    c) The film featuring the hooded figure is named "ALCH".

I might be wrong still. Only BHVR knows. Also don't feel like arguing over this as I haven't unlocked all the journal entries...

    Have a nice Halloween.

    If you say so.

I used to believe the Figure was Vigo too, actually, since he didn't seem to be showing any signs of agony or mental disorder, which was troubling the Hallowed Blight protagonist (the Alchemist). Maybe last year devs felt unsure about where the Lore should go or this would even be a thing, so they were not very precise.

i saw both. The archivist is separate and there is no evidence that he is vigo besides being mysterious. the protagonist in the journal and the guy in the cinematic are separate and im saying the guy in the cinematic is Vigo.

ah aww... I forgot to mention that I sneak peeked at the films thats in the game files once the update came out. Unlocking all 5 entries of "the Hunger" will grant access to a piece of animation about what happened to the Hooded Figure after he left the lab. So... Well... I'm like 89% sure. Just wait and see.

  • @Huntedfailure said:

I don't get why so many people seem to not get this.

"I have been obsessively deciphering Vigo's Journal."

the person writing these journal entries isn't Vigo as why would they decipher their own work and seem surprised by it?

The hooded figure is Vigo: The hooded figure he seems to know his way around scientific equipment (considering what little info we have that very in character with Vigo) and considering the events contained within the journal the character there dose not have said skills again making them not Vigo.

What if the hooded figure is Benedict Baker?: Baker appeared to be journalist who actively seeked to enter The Entitys Realm and i don't know about you but i don't think a journalistic career involves knowing your way around beakers and having clearly advanced skill in chemistry and engineering.

    @myers_obsession said:

Didn't they say in the archive reveal, that he is not benedict and not vigo. He is a new character called the observer.

    SPOILER ALERT

Sorry but you were both wrong lol.

I unlocked two of The Alchemist's Memories in the Archives (The Hunger). The hooded figure is the Alchemist & The Hallowed Blight Protagonist who found Vigo's Journal. That guy's lost all hope and in the Void now...

Still, he could be wearing Vigo's old clothes.

  • Yes. Otherwise they won't have the original 1000 AC returned to you as you unlock through all 70 tiers.

  • They made amazing animations as rewards of the Archive progress. Found in the game files. Don't know if it's allowed to talk about it here right now...

  • Cool new animatics hidden in files waiting to be unlocked.

  • Maybe the survivors should have worked harder fixing gens if the gates are close, rather than leaving each other to die and getting themselves into this dead end.

If one holds a key already why not just open the hatch and escape? Should be pretty easy, minding a bit where the killer has been.

I'm survivor main but I don't think survivors are always meant to win.

  • Don't think that would make sense. Hex perks are op, and survivors already have to spend quite a while to take a totem down once they find it.

btw not ALL hex totems are gonna wreck the killer when being taken down, like Haunted Grounds.

  • Maybe we'll learn more through the event this year about how Vigo harnessed the power of the Entity.

Or as a survivor, just loop and use pallets and flashlights to make the world a living hell for baby killer Trapper, gg
